33rd Anniversary of the SB Vietnam Memorial South Boston will celebrate the 33rd Anniversary of the South Boston Vietnam Memorial located in Medal of Honor Park on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014.

A Memorial Mass will be held in St. Brigids Church, 841 East Broadway, South Boston, at 10:30 a.m., followed by an 11:30 a.m. rededication ceremony at the South Boston Vietnam Memorial in Medal of Honor Park. Our keynote speaker will be Brigadier General Francis M. McGinn, Assistant Adjutant General U. S. Army, Massachusetts National Guard.

Also attending the rededication ceremony Sunday will be the families of the 25 men from South Boston who were killed in action during the Vietnam War, along with many of the South Boston Vietnam Veterans.

We are dedicating this year’s ceremony in memory of Major Gen-

eral Harold Greene, our 2010 Guest Speaker, who was killed in Afghanistan on August 5, 2014.

The South Boston Vietnam Memorial was among America’s first formal memorial for Vietnam Veterans – predating the dedication of the national Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. by 13 months - and honors 25 men from South Boston who gave their lives during the Vietnam War. South Boston suffered the highest loss of KIA for a community of its size in the country.

Toilet paper is one of the essential supply items in our society, even though most of us take said supply item for granted. South Boston Online Endorses Three Candidates It’s election season again and South Boston Online is pleased to announce our endorsements for the following Democratic candidates in the State Primary Election on Tuesday, September 9th. Please consider Warren Tolman for Attorney General, Deb Goldberg for State Treasurer and Rick Joyce for Suffolk County Register of Probate.

Warren Tolman served as a State Representative and State Senator for 8 years. During his time on Beacon Hill, Warren championed important issues like campaign finance reform, domestic violence prevention and early childhood education. He also took on big tobacco and was instrumental in passing legislation requiring tobacco companies to disclose their ingredients to the public. As Attorney General, Warren is committed to fighting opiate abuse. He plans to enforce requirements for mental health parity to ensure that all those suffering from opiate addiction have safe places to go and work towards their sobriety. He has pledged to take on the NRA to require smarter and safer gun technology, will work with local colleges to reduce campus sexual assaults and is dedicated to being a progressive voice on all of the issues we face in the Commonwealth. Warren made state history when he ran for governor in 2002 as a “clean elections” candidate under public financing. He has a degree in economics from Amherst College as well as a law degree from Boston College. He has worked as a practicing attorney for the past ten years while also teaching at Boston College and Northeastern. He currently lives in Watertown with his wife Carolyn and is a proud father of three.

As State Treasurer, Deb Goldberg will provide all Massachusetts residents with the financial power and skills they need to get ahead in today’s economy. Goldberg is passionate about bridging the wage equality gap, helping families create college savings plans, increasing financial literacy and establishing a state owned bank to provide critical funding for transportation, infrastructure, schools and local economies. She is a former chair and selectman in the Town of Brookline who attended law school at Boston College and earned an MBA from Harvard. She currently serves as State Senate President Therese Murray’s representative on the Commonwealth Covenant Fund within the Treasurer’s office. Goldberg’s family founded Stop and Shop and she spent much of her youth working at their former D St location as a member of the UFCW Local 1445. She later worked in several executive positions before leaving Stop and Shop after the company went through a takeover. Goldberg found she could not stand for the new management’s corporate model as her family had prided themselves on providing their workers with good paying jobs and benefits.

She decided to devote her life to public service and to making a difference on issues facing women, children and families. She currently lives in Brookline with her husband Michael and is a proud mother of two.

Born and raised in South Boston, Rick Joyce has 32 years of experience as a Suffolk County Probation Officer. In that time, Rick has been privileged to help countless individuals get their lives back on track by helping them get the education opportunities, counseling and training they need to transition back into society. As Register of Probate, Rick will treat every Suffolk County resident who utilizes the probate system with respect and dignity as they navigate a system that presents many unique challenges. He has invaluable experience in both the courtroom and the Trial Court System — where he has worked with hundreds of court personnel and victims of crime. Rick is a family man who has been married to his wife Catherine for 29 years and is the proud father of five children. He has been a union member for 32 years, is a lifelong Suffolk County resident and has a bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a Master’s in Criminal Justice. Rick is also very proud of his longtime record as a community volunteer — especially his time as a youth hockey coach.

The USS Constitution Sails By On Friday, August 29, at 11 a.m., “Old Ironsides” sailed out to Castle Island, presented a 21-gun salute to Fort Independence, and then performed a topsail drill for the huge crowd. With the possible exception of her upcoming launch date (her keel was laid in 1795; she was launched on October 21, 1797 – 217 years ago), this was her last sail-by before three years in dry dock.

The Charlestown Naval Shipyard, now a U.S. Naval Museum and well worth a visit this fall, will be measurably quieter until 2017. You see, the USS Constitution is entering dry dock for a three-year, comprehensive refitting, renovation, and refurbishment.

It’s appropriate to ask, “Why will it take so long?” Well, over the years, many repairs have been made to the USS Constitution. Most of these were performed hastily, and not according to the original plans drawn up and built by shipwrights in 1795-7. In other words, to use that nautical word from the days of sail, these repairs had been “jury-rigged”. All this jury-rigging will now be set straight for posterity.

In fact, the original blueprints for the USS Constitution no longer exist, but luckily, the plans for her sister ship, the USS President (also built in 1795-7), are still with us. The two ships were virtually identical when they were launched in 1797 by then Secretary of War Henry Knox, the bookseller from Boston, who also brought the Dorchester Heights cannons to Boston from Fort Ticonderoga. Knox rose to become Washington’s Major General of Artillery during our Revolution.

Just over two hundred years ago, the USS Constitution became famous world-wide. She was undefeated during the War of 1812; her most famous battle was with the British frigate “Guerriere”, which she dismasted and sank. Legend (myth?) has it that the Guerriere’s cannonballs bounced off her hull that was constructed of dense tropical woods like cypress and mangrove. Seeing this, a crew member yelled, “Look, her sides are made of iron!” Her nickname, “Old Ironsides”, has stuck with her ever since then.

The USS Constitution began her career in the successful fight against the Barbary Pirates in the 1790s. Two hundred years ago, in 1814, she captured numerous British merchant ships, including one vessel carrying gold from South America the England.

She ended her active duty days as a training ship for the Naval Academy.

But back to the future. The Castle Island sail-by on Friday, August 29, was magnificent. Raising the three topsails – fore, main, and mizzen – was followed by a 21-gun salute. It all took more than 200 well-trained crew members. And it was a fitting demonstration of and tribute to U. S. maritime history.

For the next three years, please be patient. When the USS Constitution comes back on duty in 2017, she’ll (hopefully) take an active part in a return of the Tall Ships to Boston.

The Tall Ships will be an unforgettable reminder that South Boston, with its beaches, terminals, and magnificent waterfront, is first and foremost a world-class maritime community.

That event will be worth waiting for.

This article is something of a friendly reminder, of course. It’s also a cordial invitation to spend a marvelous Saturday afternoon getting to know South Boston even better than you do already. It’s both a reminder and an invitation to take part in a yearly event that has become a South Boston tradition - the South Boston Chamber of Commerce’s 15th Annual Street Festival on September 13.

Perhaps South Boston Online should address this question to the

many enthusiastic newcomers who now live in our neighborhood: Do you think you really know South Boston? Get your morning run and ocean swim out of the way and spend the afternoon with us. Please read on – you’ll know the real South Boston much better after the Street Festival.

Come to the Street Festival and see the “Best of Boston” award winners in action. Like Cranberry Café, or Bringing Up Baby. You’ve no doubt heard that consignment shops across the nation have gone upscale – way upscale! Look for names of South Boston’s consignment establishments, like “Covet” and “Closet Connection”. Do you fancy yourself having your own unique “look”? Then take a “look” – at Ku De Ta, Habit, and Pretty Reckless.

We don’t have to tell you that even the most energetic shopper needs a break now and then. You’ll find a huge cross-section of offerings from an array of South Boston’s restaurants – Italian (from Milanese to Bolog-

nese), Japanese, Indian, brunches, take-outs, pub grub, “Best” sausages.

Take a seat somewhere, anywhere.

While you’re eating (or drinking), listen up to the non-stop entertainment on two separate stages – one on front of the Library, the other down towards L Street. Red Kat & The Rough Ideas will provide you with an eclectic mix. The Weydt has formed a new band that’ll blow your mind.

From Lucky’s Lounge on A Street, Adam Herbert’s Sinatra Band will do covers from the Ol’ Blue Eyes repertoire. Thomas Park, with lead vocalist Paul Eastman, drummer Joe Tobias, and the rest of their band, will cover everything from Woodstock to now.

Other performers include the Woods School of Irish Dance, Miss Linda’s Dancers, and Andrea Muccini’s Ultimate Self Defense. Watch for the band of Pirates of the Caribbean, led by none other than Captain Jack himself. The kids will enjoy the face painters, balloon twisters, caricaturists, street performers, and Toe Jam Puppet Band.

You will also be interested in the wide variety of worthy causes and activities supported by South Boston’s agencies and non-profits. We are a neighborhood that takes care of our own. Pick up a brochure at each of the agencies’ tables. Who knows?

You might be motivated to volunteer with some of them in the future.

Finally, you will definitely be impressed by the wide range of art you’ll see at the Street Festival. The South Boston Arts Association, led

by Dan McCole, will exhibit works ranging from watercolors to American Realism. Norman Crump is exhibiting his oils; Mike Foley and Dan McCole will exhibit their art and photographs of Havana, which they recently exhibited at Gallery 555. And all of this talent comes from the traditional residential areas of the ol’ hometown.

We’ll say it again: You’ll really know, appreciate and understand what South Boston has to offer , after you attend the South Boston Street Festival on Saturday,September 13th.

BCYF Now Recruiting for New Youth Advisory Council Boston youth ages 14-16 are invited to apply to the new BCYF Youth Advisory Council (YAC).

The goal of the Advisory Council is to increase the youth voice at BCYF by engaging and empowering youth in program planning and execution.

Boston Centers for Youth & Families is the City of Boston’s largest human service agency operating 35 facilities across Boston. The bulk of programs and activities at the community centers are youthfocused so the BCYF Youth Advisory Council will have a major role in shaping what the centers offer for young people and how they can address their needs. The BCYF YAC will serve as a link between City government and youth by identifying issues affecting youth, addressing community concerns, and designing action plans to foster change. The YAC will serve as a means for youth to have a voice in shaping the quality of life in Boston while engaging in various activities in the community.

The mission of the BCYF Youth Advisory Council is to instill mem-

bers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to work in cooperation with local government to best serve the needs and expectations of Boston’s youth and to empower them to make positive change in their community. The Youth Council is designed to train young people in leadership related to advocacy, community building, public policy, civics, and social justice. At BCYF we are committed to working with youth to develop their potential for leadership, personal growth, and career success.

Late Summer Book Sale

It’s a regular ritual, and it’s for a very good cause. Last Saturday, August 30, the Friends of the Library held a Book Sale at the South Boston Branch Library. It was a great deal, especially the children’s books, which went for trifling $1.00 for four books – cheaper (and better) than comic books (or graphic novels, if you prefer).

Watch out for the next Book Sale at the Branch Library on Saturday, September 13, from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. You can even rent a nearby Hubway bicycle to get your books home. And after you’ve read them, why, just bring them back for a further sale. The Book Sales are a win-win-win situation, for sure.

Crash on Emerson

Early in the afternoon last Friday, a passenger car crashed into the brick residential building at the corner of Emerson where it intersects with I Street and East Broadway. The car sustained severe front end damage; the passenger was ambulanced to Boston Medical Center as a precaution against a possible concussion.

The building damage was minimal – only few brick got shattered, and the door jamb was partly split. They just don’t build them like they used to anymore.

St Peter’s Academy News St. Peter’s Academy was founded in 2006 but the iconic building has been a staple in the South Boston neighborhood for decades. Formerly known as the Laboure Center, it was slated to be sold to the highest bidder before the St. Peter’s Academy Board of Directors stepped in to save the school. St. Peter’s Academy has offered affordable education since moving to 371 West Fourth St. St. Peter’s Academy is a non profit educational institution that prides itself on keeping tuition cost minimal while providing an outstanding learning experience for children Pre K through 8th grade. Classroom sizes range from six to twenty students which is incredibly ben-

eficial for interactive learning.

St. Peter’s Academy has a core group of volunteers and parents that help to maintain the building and playground. There is no full time staff only volunteers to help with painting, cleaning,gardening, and general maintenance of the building. Volunteers do what they can, which is much appreciated, but not everything can be done as the building is overwhelming large. All money raised goes to keeping tuition low and affordable, which presents a problem for upgrading the structure. “ Everything that we do is for the children and the families that attend our school. We keep tuition down by donations and fundraisers

Curran Club Crowned Champions Defeat the Culkin Club in OT to win the SBBA title

In the South Boston Basketball Association finals on Thursday evening, August 28th, at the Mike Pano hoop court at “M” Street Park, the Curran Club eked out a hard-fought win in overtime, to defeat the Culkin Club, 39-36.

In the opening minutes, the Curran Club took an early 11-8 lead. Matt Walsh (5 pts.) hit a three-pointer to tie it up, 11-11.

John Costello (5pts.) and Adam Donovan (15 pts./8 rebounds) responded with key hoops late in the first half, to give their squad a 19-15 lead. With fifteen seconds remaining in the first half, Culkin Club forward Brendan Carter (6 pts.) scored on a lay-up to cut the deficit to two, 19-17. Curran Club forward John Hines (6 pts.) was fouled with only four ticks showing on the game clock. He went to the line and hit one out-of-two free throws, to give the Curran Club a 20-17 advantage at the break.

The Curran Club came out strong at the beginning of the second half.

Player-coach, Eddie “Wilt” Curran (3pts./6rebounds) hit a half hook, Tommy Beatty (5pts.) tipped a rebound to Donovan for an easy deuce, and John Hines (6pts.) scored on a lay-up. Donovan scored again and also hit two free throws. With this 8-2 run (Walsh hit a layup for the Culkin Club) the Curran Club had a comfortable 30-19 advantage.

In overtime, Beatty hit Costello with a nifty out-of -bounds pass for an easy layup. Then Beatty hit the back end of two free throws. And, the Curran Club was crowned league champions.

“It was a tough game,” said player-coach Curran, “We played two-three and threetwo defensive zones, but mostly three-

two. We wanted to pack it in so they couldn’t penetrate for easy scores. But we also had to worry about their outside shooting. It wasn’t easy beating Culkin’s team.”

SBOL’s MVP Award went to Curran Club power forward, Adam Donovan.

Donovan had an impressive month in hoop. He was on three men’s league teams that won their respective league championships. On Thursday, August 21, his team won the Readville title. On Friday, August 22, his squad celebrated by winning the Garvey men’s league championship in Dorchester. And then he was instrumental in winning the SBBA crown.

The SBBA also celebrated its twenty-fifth summer season, and Curran expressed his appreciation to those that made it possible.

The Real Meaning of Life Begins When You Find A Cause

NBA and college basketball great Jimmy Walker once said to me, “Ray, you were one of the best outside shooters in college basketball and the highest vote getter in Boston history, when you were Mayor of Boston, so now that you are out of politics and sports, does all that excitement and meaning in life come to an end? Basketball is over for me, so what happens next? I was on a ride, but the ride came to a sudden stop”, Walker continued. Jimmy Walker was a young black kid, I knew from the playgrounds in Boston, who I liked, instructed, and convinced him to attend Providence College on a basketball scholarship. He would become one of greatest college players in the country and was number one draft choice for the Detroit Pistons in the NBA and had a good pro career. Unfortunately, Jimmy died in 2007 from lung cancer. I suppose that after a bout with fame and notoriety, it’s normal for someone like Walker to have the emotion of wondering what’s next in life after sports. It certainly passed my mind many times after leaving the Vatican, especially after working closely with Popes, Presidents and Prime Ministers. Most notably,

So lets jump to July of 2014 and I’m addressing the Massachusetts House of Representatives in formal session. The Massachusetts House Speaker and the entire Boston delegation was honoring me with an Official Proclamation, which read in part; “former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, Mayor of Boston and State Representative Raymond L. Flynn is honored for his outstanding record of dedication and commitment to public service and his outstanding career, as a college All American Student Athlete, who later became an outstanding political leader, who continues to inspire people, across the state because

of his tireless commitment to racial justice, the handicapped, poor and children with physical disabilities. Following the official Massachusetts House of Representatives Proclamation presentation, I addressed the 165 members of the House. I would like to share the comments I made with you, because I think they may reflect how many people may feel in their so-called retirement years: Mr. Speaker and Members of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Thank you for this special honor. I am honored to stand before you to accept this Proclamation on behalf of the people, who elected me to public office, my parents who raised

me and my family, who supported me.

And of course, my Catholic faith who guided me throughout life.

My 6 children hosted a surprise 75th birthday party for me. Many leading Boston public officials attended the Mass and celebration, including Mayor Martin Walsh and Congressman Stephen Lynch.

They announced that the city and state would plan a public memorial to honor my legacy. While I was surprised with the wonderful gesture of respect, I honestly didn’t feel that any memorial to me was necessary. The honor of serving my country and the people of Boston was reward enough for me. For me, it was always been about the City, not me. I never sought money or power and when I left public life, I had neither. But I do appreciate your respect.

I was proud to represent and fight for the people of South Boston and Dorchester from 1971 to 1979 here at the State House. We enacted into law, some of the most important and responsible policies in the country, from helping reform the states higher educational system, provide funding to create millions of new jobs, building new schools, to modernizing our continued on page 14

There were hot dogs, hamburgers, gobs of Amrhein’s clam chowder, blue (yes, blue) potato chips, freshly cooked popcorn, and Boston Police Department Hoodsies. This sumptuous

Also, introducing and debating Official Resolutions here in the House, we were even able to begin the process for Peace and Justice in Northern Ireland and to end apartheid in South Africa. These discussions were heard from 10 Downing Street to the New York Times. Black and Irish politicians, Democrats and Republicans worked together for the “common good.” This is where I learned my politics. This is where I learned how to negotiate and yes, compromise to help pass good and fair laws. That legislative experience helped me to become an effective manager of the City of Boston, but it was in my home, church and neighborhood, where I learned to treat everyone with dignity and respect. When I was named “America’s Most Effective Municipal Manager” in 1991, I said it was because of my Legislative experience. I’m certain that Mayor Marty Walsh will find the same thing.

Let me close with a true story. A story that brings me pride to this very day. It’s about having served in the House and to have played a part in helping enact landmark legislation, which prohibited discrimination against special needs and handicapped school children. Before I was elected to the Legislature, I remember my wife’s Special Needs 6-year-old nephew John had to travel to St. Coletta’s Catholic School for Special Needs children in Hanover, every

WWW.SOUTHBOSTONONLINE.COM day from South Boston. Almost an hour each way. Public schools at the time did not mandate such educational programs for Special Needs children. While running for the House in 1970, I constantly spoke out about this discriminatory public policy. When I got elected, with the help of many Special Needs parents, I set up State House meetings with Governor Frank Sargent, Representative Mike Daly of Brighton and their staff’s at the State House to discuss children like John. Several Legislator’s had similar constituent concerns. Momentum soon grew to pass Legislation for the first time in our State, that would require local communities to provide every child a public education, regardless of their physical or mental condition. With the active support of a lot of dedicated parents and advocates, and Speaker Dave Bartley, the Daly-Bartley Bill was enacted into law. I think the first of its kind in the country.

So now, many years later, my own Special Needs grandson Braeden, who we love passionately, was born with a serious disability, but today attends a great public school Special Needs program in Braintree. I visit him at school regularly, I read to the children in the school and I even coach his Challenge Baseball League team for handicapped people from the South Shore, which is sponsored by the Teamsters Union 25, and its outstanding leader Sean O’Brien.

I know the kind of compassionate and

enlightened political leadership, when I served here and that you still strive for here today at the State House. Please don’t ever forget all the Braeden’s in Massachusetts and throughout the United States today.

They need and depend on you. This Legislature must continue to make life better for millions of handicapped children, the elderly, the sick and the forgotten. You must continue to represent the values of the people of our State.

If Jimmy Walker were here today, I would say to him, my new journey is even more important today, then politics or sports ever was.

Not only have I sought out and met with leading medical experts throughout the U.S., but was invited to attend the First International Adult Stem Cell Conference at the Vatican, where leading world scientists and medical experts participated in this remarkable first ever world conference.

At the Vatican, I had the chance to talk to the Pope, about my grandson Braeden and his disability. I also was able to meet and developed a relationship with noted scientists, including Christian Drapeau from Stemtech International, who told me about all the progress taking place with adult stem cell nutrition. Dr. Jeremy Schmahmann, who heads up the Ataxia Unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, also has told me that progress is being made in medical technology and is hopeful that maybe someday, people

like Braeden, will be able to walk and talk, like other healthy and happy children.

Until then, I will continue to pray and fight for Braeden and families like his, organize advocacy groups, and appeal to our government, private foundations and generous contributors to help fund this life-altering and critical medical research.

But first, we have to educate the public about the complexity of the problem, that people like Braeden are experiencing. We also need to get President Obama and the Congress to begin to take these brain diseases more seriously.

I have been in contact with U. S. Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts, who has been working hard to increase Federal funding for research, but we need to contact other members of Congress to do like wise. I have even written a screenplay, which would bring to the screen an inspirational story, and create awareness to the challenges that many families experience. But thus far, Hollywood has not responded to our plea.

Thank you Speaker Bob De Leo, Representative Nick Collins and all you respected members of the House, both Democrats and Republicans. Loyal and caring, Americans all. Stand tall, none of us are perfect, but political leaders like you, are still the best hope in helping children like Braeden.
