Gov. Baker’s Reports on Opioids (especially heroin) This is South Boston Online’s seventh article on the drug crisis in Boston and Massachusetts. Gov. Baker recently released his own documents on this crisis, which we briefly review in the article below. We will say it as bluntly as we can: Please get copies and read both of these reports – they are important, very important.

Two months ago, the Office of Governor Charlie Baker released two reports on the opioid drug crisis in Massachusetts. Before we proceed with a review of these two reports, the word “opioid” needs a bit of explanation. “Opioids” can refer to legally prescribed medicines, such as OxyCodone; it can also mean flatly illegal substances such as heroin. In recent times, some heroin has contained another extremely powerful (and dan-

gerous) pain-killer known as fentanyl.

In this review, South Boston Online will refer to opioids and heroin interchangeably. Even though that isn’t quite accurate, it makes for a clearer discussion. Suffice to say that heroin and all other opioids (except for those prescribed legally) are highly addictive and dangerous. A user never really knows what’s in an opioid bought on the street, even if the dealer says it’s “heroin”.

The two reports from Gov. Baker’s office are called “Recommendations of the Governor’s Opioid Working Group” and “Action Plan to Address the Opioid Epidemic in the Commonwealth”. These were assembled by an 18-member group chaired

by Marylou Sudders, Secretary of the Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS). The first report is 47 pages long; the second, a short seven pages – for a total of 54 continued on page 2

Drug Series pages. That’s about the size of a daily newspaper, and (much) less than a Sunday issue. It’ll take you only an hour or so to read these two reports.

To give you an idea of why it is called an “opioid epidemic” in Boston and Massachusetts, here are a few figures: Over the last 10 years, 6,000 users in Massachusetts have died from heroin/ opioid overdoses (yes, that’s six thousand!). Last year in 2014, 1,008 overdose deaths were initially reported.

WWW.SOUTHBOSTONONLINE.COM That figure was later adjusted upwards to 1,250 heroin-related fatalities. The heroin overdose problem in Massachusetts has gotten much worse in recent years.

As a comparison, traffic deaths in our state average about 375 per year.

Fatal overdoses are more than three times higher. Yes, that’s an epidemic!

The reports emphasize preventive programs. These are very useful in high school, because many future addicts begin using addictive substances around 14 or 15, or perhaps earlier. By the time they graduate

from high school, they’re hooked, but good. These recommended school programs include the parents of the students as well. In some cases, attending a recovery high school is the answer. There are four of these schools in the state; one more is planned for Worcester.

It is well known that drug use during pregnancy often injures the unborn child. Many women who get pregnant manage to stay off drugs until their children are born. Others are unable to do so, and need professional counseling – two lives are at stake

here. Military veterans often need help also, especially if they served in a combat zone. Without question, we owe our veterans whatever care they need.

You see, addiction to heroin or any other substance is a disease that combines both physical and mental symptoms. Proper care will always help the addicted person. Remember, there is no shame in being sick; treatment leading to recovery is available.

Get informed. Get copies of the Governor’s two reports. Please read them carefully.

Six Smart Ways to Save Recently, I have read in a number of Financial Publications that many Americans are now focusing on saving rather than spending. Being a disciplined saver is an important way to make sure you’re financially secure and prepared for life’s critical moments.

At times it can be difficult to figure out simple ways to save money and how to use your savings to pursue your financial goals. Although there is not a magic formula, here are some smart ways that will help jumpstart you in reaching your financial goals: 1.

Establish a savings goal Establishing a savings goal makes it much easier to get started.

Decide what your goal is, and how long it will take for you to reach that goal. Setting goals and having a plan is essential to ensure your financial objectives can be achieved. Whether you are planning for college, a home purchase, retirement, a trip or just trying to be more financially secure, establishing goals provides motivation to accomplish your objectives.

Track your expenses It is important for you to be aware of how much you are spending and what your money is being spent on. Record the amount of money spent over one month.

This includes small purchases such as, coffee, lunch, and every newspaper that you purchase for an entire month. Once you have collected all of your data, you can then organize your expenses by category, e.g. groceries, gas, rent, mortgage etc. This will help you determine the areas in which you can cut-back on your spending to save more.

Create a Budget Now that you have a better idea of your overall expenses, you can create a budget to use as a tool to make sure that you are staying within the financial parameters you have established. This budget can reflect your weekly, monthly and periodic expenses and be disciplined in tracking and checking your budget routinely.

Start or Boost your Emer-

gency Savings Account An important practice to increasing your savings is to pay yourself first. Deposit the money you want to save into a designated savings account before you begin paying any bills or fulfilling other obligations. You never know when you would need additional cash, so try to have two to three months of living expenses in a readily accessible savings or money market account. This is a great way for you to reinforce your money saving habit when unplanned expenses inevitably come along.

Pay down High Interest rate credit card debt For many, the best return on your money is to pay down credit card debt. Whether you are carrying balances at 10% or 22% interest, credit card debt is typically the priciest debt you can have.

You can eliminate this costly expense by putting excess cash towards the repayment of your credit card debt. This will result in a substantial return because it decreases your outstanding balance along with the subsequent interest charges.

Take advantage of workplace Retirement program Retirement savings often begins through a workplace retirement plan such as a 401 (k). Contributions not only reduce your taxable income now, but your investment grows without the headwind of taxes, until you begin your withdrawals. In some cases, your employer will match your contribution, which would therefore increase your investment amount even more. Any employer contribution represents “free money”, so be sure to at least match your employers contribution rate in your 401 (k).

Choosing a savings strategy that works for you can be a bit overwhelming. Set aside the time to review and manage your financial affairs, develop a simple and straightforward set of objectives and stay focused on achieving your objectives. If you make the commitment to a savings strategy, someday you’ll be glad you did.

Thank You In case you haven’t noticed as summer rolls along “Mom’s Bench” as Deirdre, Tom, and Alanna Grealy call it, is back in its rightful place.

Under a shady tree overlooking M St beach is the bench that Sharlene Feeney Grealy walked to when she needed to relax and reflect on all that she was blessed with and some things she would battle to keep. The bench always recharged her. It rejuvenated her and gave her cause to smile.

Cancer took her in June of 2003. We lost her beautiful smile, her bubbly personality, and the fighting spirit that kept us all going. Sharlene was gone, but the bench stood firm. A suttle monument to a neighborhood girl that everyone loved.

On a cold rainy night, some months ago, a motor vehicle accident tore the bench from its concrete platform. The crash left it twisted and broken. Mom’s Bench was gone! News spread quickly through the neighborhood and within an hour of the accident Deirdre, Tom, and Alanna Grealy were told, “Don’t worry the bench will be back. We promise!”

Like so many times before Southie stepped up. The neighborhood rallied and proved once again that they are the heart and soul of this city. Bar none.

Calls went out and donations poured in “Let’s get the bench back.” was an immediate neighborhood cause!

I’m sitting on the bench as I write this reflecting as my beautiful wife once did. Thinking of how fortunate and blessed The Feeney and The Grealy family are to have you all on our side. You’re the best.

On behalf of both families, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your help and support in “Bringing back the bench.” It would take two editions to list all of the people that helped along the way.

The families would like to especially thank State Representative Nick Collins for his effort and thoughtfulness all through the process, Kevin Hollenbach of the DCR who went back and forth and above and beyond to secure the placement of the new bench, Lt. Mark Kiley of Massachusetts State Police in South Boston who helped locate the plaque from the original bench, and of course, each and every one of you, The People of Southie.

Donations were amazing and plentiful throughout the process, but as Shalrene would want, they were sent to her favorite charities. St. Jude’s Hospital, Cops for Kids with Cancer, and Melanoma Research Foundation are just a few of many sent in Sharlene’s name.

Linehan, Murphy Bill for Tax Relief Pushed

by Collins, Michlewitz on Beacon Hill Recently, the Massachusetts Legislature held a public hearing on a home rule petition which would grant tax relief to homeowners throughout Boston. The petition was presented by City Council President Bill Linehan and City Councilor Steve Murphy and was approved by the City Council.

As written, the home rule petition would establish property tax deferrals for low-income, long-term residents over the age of 55. This deferral would allow older residents to stay in their homes despite the burden of rising property taxes.

In order to out this tax relief program into effect, the City of Boston must first obtain authorization from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

As a result, Representative Aaron Michlewitz and Representative Nick Collins filed the home rule petition with the Massachusetts Legislature and testified in support of it at the public hearing at the State House.

“Councilor Linehan and I filed this petition to bring relief to long term homeowners who need it now” said

Councilor Murphy. “I want to thank the Mayor, Rep. Collins, and Rep. Michlewitz for driving this home at the State House” “This bill would give well deserved tax relief to those longtime residents who need it the most” said Rep. Michlewitz. “Allowing residents to stay in their homes should be a priority and that is why I was happy to sponsor this bill with Representative Collins.”

“There are many lifelong residents of our city who are on a fixed income and are struggling to keep up with rising taxes in so that they can remain in their homes,” said Rep. Collins.

“This is a problem we are aware of at the city and state levels and I am working with my colleagues in City Hall and the Boston Legislative Delegation to protect these members of our community. This bill will allow long-term residents on a fixed income, particularly the elderly and disabled, to continue living comfortably in their beloved homes.”

The bill is now being considered by the Joint Committee on Revenue.

Would you trust Hillary Clinton to be the next President?

I just don’t think that Hillary Clinton is a trustworthy person worthy to be the next President of the United States. After all, don’t we want an “honest” person to lead the nation?

Her email controversy has grown legs and intelligence agencies are reviewing her emails. The State Department is required to file reports to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia regarding their review of Clinton’s emails. You can bet your last buck the only reason the State Department is doing this is because the court ruled under the Freedom of Information Act that they had to because of a lawsuit brought on by Vice News.

Although Clinton aides would make you believe otherwise, last week, Clinton was forced to

turn over her email server and a flash drive conveniently and illegally tucked away in her lawyer’s office, to the FBI. “The Clinton team claims it handed over the server voluntarily-a classic example of Clinton’s penchant for half-truths,” writes Herald contributor, Jonah Goldberg. “For months, the insisted they’d never turn it over. They caved because they had to. The decision was about

as voluntary as a bank robber relinquishing his sack of cash to the cops at gunpoint.”

Last month she said, “I am confident that I never sent nor received any information that was classified at the time it was sent and received.” Yeah, there’s nothing to worry about. Nothing to see here…move along.

As of July 15, only a small percentage of emails have been reviewed by the State Depart-

ment and five other intelligence agencies. Over sixty were flagged as sensitive, containing information classified as “confidential.” One email was classified at the intermediate level of “secret” by the FBI. Two other emails were deemed “top secret” by one intelligence inspector.

When the review is complete, how many confidential, secret, and top secret emails will be discovered on her unsecured server? When the review is complete, what excuses will be made by the Clinton team to deflect the fact that she was reckless and disregarded procedure? And, will she be found criminally responsible for her actions?

If Hillary Clinton thinks she’s above the law, then why would we elect her to the highest office in the land?

After all, at the inauguration, the president-elect swears on the bible that he-or she-will abide by our Constitution.

South Boston Goes Downtown

You know that Boston was first to take actions leading up to the American Revolution. Did you know that the very first of these actions – a protest against the hated Stamp Act – happened exactly 250 years ago last Friday, on August 14, 1765? Boston’s Sons of Liberty fomented this protest; it took place under the fabled Liberty Tree at the intersection of Washington, Boylston, and Essex Streets.

At 8 p.m. last Friday, the Liberty Tree Project began, celebrating 250 years of the American ideal of freedom. Michael Dowling, who is from South Boston and the Artistic Director of our Medicine Wheel group, conceived the vision for the celebration. Anna White, also of South Boston, was Medicine Wheel’s Event Coordinator. South Boston en Accion

took part in the procession to Liberty Tree Plaza. Bob Allison from Old Harbor Street, who is the Suffolk U. History Chair, marched with a lantern. Dowling was also the closing speaker in Friday’s Liberty Tree 250 program.

Medicine Wheel Productions presented the Liberty Tree Project jointly with a consortium called “Revolution 250”, which was formed to commemorate and interpret the American Revolutionary events from 250 years ago. Participants from Revolution 250 included Martha McNamara and Suzanne Taylor of the Freedom Trail Foundation.

The sponsorship of the Liberty Tree event, as well as the participation in it, was citywide, of course. Co-sponsors comprised the Business Improvement District (BID) and the Convention and Visitors Bureau. Supporters

included Boston National Historic Parks, Eastern National, the Boston Cultural Council, Boston Duck Tours, and the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture.

Other marching groups and lantern bearers were from Ostiguy High School, St. Francis House, Boston Asian Youth Essential Service, and the Museum of African-American History.

The lanterns were crafted

by Skip Gentile of Src Roofing (Quincy) from copper roof flashing. They are true works of art. The colonial rebels hung 108 lanterns on the Liberty Tree after the Stamp Act was repealed, so Gentile made 108 lanterns for the 250th year commemoration.

John Powell of Light Time in Space created an after-dark light show. Hundreds of residents, visitors, and civic group members took part. Last Friday evening had a huge cultural impact, along with important historical significance that will lead up to July 4, 2026 – the 250th Anniversary of American Independence.

The Liberty Tree was the first location where colonists assembled to protest British actions like the Stamp Act. A large commemorative plaque is positioned where the Liberty Tree once stood. When word spread to the other colonies about Boston’s defiance, they too decided not to obey the Stamp Act. The Act was repealed in desperation by the British Parliament a year later in 1766.

Ten years afterward, the War for Independence began at the Battle of Lexington and Concord - “The shot heard ‘round the world.” And it all started right here in Boston, under the branches of that massive elm later known as “The Liberty Tree”, at the intersection of Newbury, Orange, Essex Streets, and Frog Lane (an intersection known these days as Washington, Boylston, and Essex).

Sadly, the Liberty Tree was cut down by the British in the winter of 1775, because the American colonials had the Tories blockaded in Boston and they ran short of firewood.

Meet Kathryn and Kyle Junior staffers at the Club enjoying the experience

They were young members at the South Boston Boys and Girls Club and now they are junior staffers.

They love the Club staff and interacting with members. They know they were fortunate when they were younger and now have the opportunity to solidify their connection with the Club. These polite youngsters are Kathyrn Capo and Kyle Murphy.

Kathyrn Capo, 15, is the daughter of Marjana and Mikelin Capo. She has an older brother named Piro and a gray cat named Nina. She will be a sophomore at Boston Latin Academy in the fall and has been on the

such as Twitter and Instagram. She plays hoop at the Tynan Community Center gym with her brother.

She plays just for fun. When she attended the Murphy School she was on the sixth-grade hoop team and enjoyed the camaraderie.

“I like the team concept of the game,” she said. “It’s great to work together on the court.”

At the Club, she welcomes the opportunity to keep the kids busy and collaborating with the staff.

“I keep an eye on the kids along with the Club staff,” Kathryn said. “I try to make them participate in activities and not sit on the sidelines.

“The Club staff is really nice,” she added. “And Timmy Bothwell (Operation’s Director) is a great supervisor.”

Kyle Murphy, 14, is the son of Mary O’Conner and Charles Murphy.

He has a bunch of siblings, Tim,

Melissa, Ryan, Trina, Tara, Cameryn, as well as three dogs, Jasmine, Max, and Smuggie. He attends the Dever-McCormack School and is doing well in class. His favorite subject is math and someday he plans on being an engineer.

In his leisure time, Kyle reads and plays video games. In the world of sports, he has been on the Club’s travel basketball team for several seasons and wants to play CYO hoop this winter.

“It’s challenging,” he said, “I play with my brothers all the time….you have to hustle on both ends of the court.”

Kyle has played in the South Boston Youth Soccer League since he was five years old. He was on the 2015 Babe Ruth Championship team, the John Hart Club. He played left field and really enjoys the game. He has played Pop Warner Football for the past two seasons. He also plays running back, wide receiver and linebacker, and is a captain for his school team.

“It’s fun,” he said. “I get to stay active. It’s also very challenging and I get to meet new players.”

Like Kathryn, Kyle was a Club kid and has now added being a Club staffer to his resume.

“I like to keep the kids focused and active,” he said. “I want them involved in as many activities as possible.

“I also love the staff,” he concluded.

“I’ve known them for a long time.”

The Happy Club Kids Youngsters just enjoying life the way they should at this juncture in their lives

They are happy-go-lucky youngsters who are enjoying their summer in South Boston. They love going to the Club and having fun in the gym, the pool, the games room, the arts and crafts room, as well as the computer room. They play touch football and are just being introduced to hoop, baseball, football, soccer, and hockey. At home, they enjoy reading and playing video games like MineCraft. The Club Six are Jarred McClure, Ryan MacDonald, Dennis Monahan, Colin Rogers, Jack Mogan and Nathan Colvin.

Jarred McClure, 8, celebrated his ninth birthday on August 26.

blue and red. His favorite food is pizza, any kind of pizza. He has a Betta fish names Mr. Crabs. Someday, he’d like to be a professional hockey player.

Jack Mogan, 8, (he just turned eight on August 14-So, HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY JACK) is entering the third grade at the Perry. His favorite subject is math.

His favorite colors are red and blue. He enjoys eating chicken at KFC. He has a cat named Shadow.

Someday, he’d also like to be a police officer and protect good people from bad people.

Nathan Colvin, 7, is entering the second grade at the Tynan Elementary School. His favorite subject in school is watching movies. His favorite colors are red and pink. He loves eating chicken while watching SpongeBob Square Pants on TV. He has a dog named Comet and a cat named Turtle.

Someday, like Jack and Jarred, he’d like to be a police officer and keep the streets safe for everyone.

Rev. James F. Power Obituary

Father Power grew up in South Boston, the son of John J. and Agnes (McGrath) Power. He came from a family of five.

He attended Gate of Heaven High School. He attended Boston College and served two years in the US Army during the Korean conflict.

He was ordained on February 2, 1962 at the Cathedral by Cardinal Cushing.

He offered his first Mass on February 4 at St. Peter Church in Dorchester.

His assignments included: St. Mary, Revere; 1962-1967 St. Peter, Plymouth; 1967-1968 Xaverian Brothers High School, Westwood; 1968-1970 Pastoral Institute, St. John Seminary; 1970-1971 Our Lady, Star of the Sea, Marblehead; 1971-1983 St. John the Evangelist, Winthrop; 19831984 St. John-St. Hugh, Roxbury; 1984-1985 St. James, Wellesley; 1985-1986; 19972002 (in-residence) St. Philip Neri, Waban; temporary administrator on Nov. 4. 1986

On January 6, 1987, he was appointed pastor of St. Francis Parish in Dracut.

His pastorate ended on September 6, 1993.

He was unassigned from 1993-1997 Father Power was placed on administrative leave in February, 2002 due to allegations of abuse. No charges were verified. He was removed from administrative leave and granted senior priest/ retirement status in January, 2009.

R.I.P. on Friday, August 14, 2015 in Charlestown. He was 85. His funeral Mass took place on Tuesday, August 18 at Gate of Heaven Church. He was laid to rest at Blue Hills Cemetery.

He is survived by a brother, Robert of Braintree and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph and two sisters, Madelyn Haines and Margaret O’Donnell.

Margaret (Power) O’Donnell; R.I.P. on April 1, 2015 in Quincy. She is survived by her husband Patrick and four sons and one daughter and her siblings: Fr. Power and Robert Power in Braintree.

Funeral and interment were private.
