A Fabulous “Time” for Carl Babe Ruth Champions John Hart Club

by Rick Winterson

It deserves mentioning that Saturday, August 1, the first evening of Midsummer, smiled upon the “time” for Carl Hosea at Peter Welch’s Gym. The crowd was spread out and hard to count, as people came and went. Both the gym itself and the yard outside of Peter Welch’s Gym at 371 Dorchester Avenue were shoulder to shoulder – many hundreds showed up to support Carl’s fight against cancer. It was a classic example of a great Southie “time”. There were raffles to play, T-shirts to buy, pizza and chicken-broccoli-ziti parmesan to eat, and some very skilled, hard-fought bouts to watch inside Peter Welch’s Gym. You have heard and seen about the reason for this “time”, which was called “Fight Night for Carl”. Carl Hosea has come down with lung cancer; he’s in the fight of his own life. Carl’s close friend Peter Welch donated his Gym, along with lots of goodies, in order to support Carl in his battle. And Southie turned out for the event, because Carl

is a family man (a lovely wife and three boys) as well as a active in his communities in South Boston and Dorchester. There were several high points during the evening’s dozen or so bouts. The fighters were skilled and well-matched. The contests all emphasized conditioning and athleticism first and foremost. If you are new to South Boston, think about attending a Southie “time” when the next one occurs. These are traditional South Boston celebrations that help out our civic organizations, our neighborhood, and especially those of our residents who have had a bad turn – a fire, an illness, an accident, whatever. Carl Hosea’s Southie “time” at Peter Welch’s Gym on Saturday, the 1st, was a fine example of this classic (and classy) South Boston tradition. And don’t forget – there’s a Cark Hosea Night on Saturday 22 (7 to 11 p.m.) at the Boston Teachers Union Hall, 120 Mt. Vernon Street (across Day Boulevard from Moakley Field, in back of the State Police barracks). photos on page 2 & 3

Ops...the 2015 Babe Ruth Champions was the John Hart Club, and not the Massport Club as mentioned in last week’s edition. Congratulations to the John Hart Club and a good luck shout-out regarding next season to the Massport Club.
