Youth Hockey Memorializes BFD Lt. Walsh, F.F. Kennedy

It was partly impromptu, although it took some careful planning. It also took some donated buses from Old Town Trolley and Cavalier Bus Company. And help from many warm-hearted parents, coaches, and other concerned adults. At the conclusion of the visits, Sullivan’s generously treated South Boston Youth hockey to their delicious burgers.

The occasion was last Sunday’s memorial trips to local fire stations as well as to the Boylston Street Station in District 4 – the Station where Lt. Edward J. Walsh and Firefighter Michael R. Kennedy were assigned on March 26, 2014 – the date they lost their lives in the line of duty while fighting the

swiftly moving fire at 298 Beacon Street last Wednesday.

Every Boston Fire Station had memorialized the two fallen heroes in some way. The Fourth Street Fire Station had painted the names of Lt. Walsh and F.F. Kennedy on their left bay door. The Boylston Street Fire Station had a massive display of remembrances at their front door, many of them left by neighbors and passers-by.

When the buses carrying the Youth Hockey members arrived, the young people filed into each of the three Fire Stations. They led the Pledge of Allegiance, then Ally Antonelli sang the National Anthem and everyone joined the Youth Hockey members in singing God Bless America. John Gilmarcontinued on page 5

Letter to the Editor - Gate of Heaven School For years, many South Boston families have struggled to provide their children with a decent and affordable education. The cost of a private education continues to increase significantly and few opportunities are available for a decent and affordable education in Boston. With a struggling Boston public school system, families are left with few options.

Over the last few years, many concerned parents and residents of South Boston have expressed their strong support for a charter school at the site of the old Gate of Heaven School. In fact, a recent petition that is now circulating throughout South Boston has already collected signatures of over 1,000 residents for building a charter school in South Boston. The opportu-

nity to relocate a charter school to the Gate of Heaven School building is a strong possibility and bringing a charter school to the center of South Boston will also strengthen our middle class and families.

Many parents are now working two, three and four jobs just to send their children to private schools that provide their children with a quality education.

Having a decent char-

ter school is an important part of the future of South Boston and it is desperately needed.

Additionally, partnering with a major college, university and hospital, this charter school will also enable our children to acquire skills and to receive a decent education. Building a charter school will give families hope and opportunity to live and raise their children in a community they love. Families

want to stay in South Boston but we also want the opportunity and option to give our children a decent education. When we see a young family active in our neighborhood, we see hope and a promising future for our children.

Even as real estate developers seek to build luxury condos, it is up to us to stand up for our community. A charter school will help ensure families have an opportunity to live and educate their children in South Boston.

Feedback Meeting; 2014 Parade

Last Friday, March 21, there was a Debriefing/Feedback Meeting on the St. Patrick’s Day/Evacuation Day Parades. It was hosted by “South Boston CAN Reduce Underage Drinking”; the Chair was Kay Walsh.

The meeting was held in Lincoln, who graciously provided a lunch that featured their popular, wood-firedoven-baked pizza.

In her opening remarks, Kay Walsh stressed the improvements had been made, but that much work remains to be done. “We must look into our own souls,” she said, “and take heed of the fact that these difficulties have surfaced.” She continued, “We have to resolve Parade problems with ‘compassionate cooperation’ so we can move on.”

An open discussion followed. Criticisms of the role the Boston Police played during the Parade came up.

The BPD representatives at the meeting pointed out that the Parades have gotten bigger in recent years – “The Police Department is becoming outnumbered.” In addition, there was an increased emphasis placed upon surveillance, after the Marathon incident in Copley Square eleven months ago. There were also various communications difficulties between police units on Parade day.

Other topics came up, which are listed as bullet points below: Parade stoppages delayed the timing of the marchers (NOTE: One of these stoppages was due to driver becoming ill enough to call for an EMS ambulance.)

- Many pedestrians crossed into the path of the second Parade.

- The Allied War Veterans should have provided a roster of Parade

applicants and final participants earlier.

- Around 2 or 3 p.m., the “Family Friendly” zones ran into trouble from boisterous crowds (some of them underage), who had been drinking.

- The plans to have NARCAN kits available ran into unexpected bureaucratic difficulties.

- A question kept coming up: “Is there a way to make the Parade more of a “Family Friendly”, neighborhood function, rather than a magnet for unruly out-of-town crowds?”

- To this end, several suggestions were mentioned – Have the Parade on March 17 instead of the Sunday before; hold the Parade downtown instead of here; start the Parade much earlier (10 a.m. or so?).

The Debriefing/Feedback Meeting ended with a resolve to work on the problems, as well as honestly determining the meaning of the phrase “Family Friendly” to describe how the Parade should unfold.

Rep. Collins Pushes to Increase Benefits to Firefighters

Representative Nick Collins joined his colleagues on the House Ways and Means Committee in pushing for increased benefits for firefighters that die in the line of duty.

Earlier this week, Collins voted in favor of H. 4002, An Act Relative to Line of Duty Benefits. The bill would increase line of duty ben-

efits for fallen firefighters from $100,000 to $150,000.

Equally important, the bill would also contribute to the trust fund established for the families of Lt. Edward J. Walsh, Jr. and Michael R. Kennedy, who were killed while battling the nine-alarm fire in the Back Bay last week.

“Our Boston Firefighters are prepared to lay it all on the line for the citizens of Boston every day,” said Rep. Collins. “The least we can do is to make sure that their families are taken care of if they do make the ultimate sacrifice.

This bill, in a small way, gets us closer to that commitment.”

The bill now moves to a full vote of the House of Representatives.

Council President Linehan testifies against Rental Inspection Ordinance City Council President Bill Linehan recently testified before the City Council Committee on Government Operations on March 31, 2014 regarding the Rental Inspection Ordinance of 2012. Councilor Linehan filed an order to repeal this ordinance recently, prompting the hearing.

When the Ordinance was first proposed in 2012, Councilor Linehan opposed it. The ordinance was introduced to address problem properties, or absentee landlords, yet responsible property owners are being submitted to fees and additional inspections as a result of it. Additionally, real estate owners already pay for 67% of the city’s annual budget and shouldn’t be charged additional fees to fund these inspections.

Councilor Linehan also feels that the amendments Mayor Walsh has pro-

posed are a good starting place for discussion on improving the ordinance. He looks forward to working with Mayor Walsh to create an ordinance that works for the property owners and tenants of Boston.

“When the Rental Inspection Ordinance was voted on in 2012 I opposed it. I had then, and still have now, concerns that I believe need to be addressed. An Open Invitation to Join Us at Community Night on April 9

Keith Motley, PhD, UMass Boston Chancellor Earlier this month, the University of Massachusetts Boston welcomed nearly 250 of our friends, colleagues, and neighbors to campus for our annual Community Breakfast, where we honor local leaders who give of themselves to serve others with two awards, the Chancellor’s Award for Longstanding Community Commitment and Service, and the Robert H. Quinn Award for Outstanding Community Leadership. The Quinn Award is named after the former speaker of the Massachusetts House who helped found UMass Boston 50 years ago. This year’s ceremony was especially poignant as we remembered Mr. Quinn, who passed away earlier this year, leaving a legacy of service and leadership that we aim to live up to every day.

Together, the recipients of this year’s awards embody the spirit of community service that Mr. Quinn so valued. Sophia Haynes-Cardwell uses the art of dance to empower countless young people to express themselves in a wholesome and safe environment, and World War II veteran Lou Pasquale advocates for and supports veterans returning from combat and people with disabilities.

The Community Breakfast is but one wonderful morning.

I am proud of UMass Boston’s engagement and involvement with communities across the state year-round, on- and offcampus. We engage in outreach that brings students, faculty, staff, and our friends and neighbors together in service to the commonwealth. We conduct service learning programs offering students a hands-on education in helping others. We create and nurture strong partnerships among local schools, hospitals, start-ups, big and small businesses, nonprofits, and churches to get real work done in our communities, together.

As a university, we are growing and changing rapidly. As a public university, we could not have achieved this progress without the support of the numerous communities we serve.

Breakfast with Mayor Walsh at Laboure

Early into his first term of office, Mayor Walsh had made already himself available to his constituents via a series of meetings in the various neighborhoods and the many institutions in the City of Boston.

Last Friday morning, March 21, he visited the Laboure Center at D Street and West Broadway for a Breakfast Meeting.

A large number – perhaps 200 or more - of local businesspeople were on hand to hear the Mayor’s remarks. It appeared to this writer that a complete cross-section of South Boston’s enterprises was represented – bankers, developers, merchants, and quasi-public entities like Massport.

After a half-hour of mix and mingle, Bob Kelly, the Chair of the Laboure Center’s Board, opened the program. He welcomed all of the Breakfast’s participants, and called the occasion “blessed”.

He affirmed his own feelings as an ardent supporter of Laboure. Deborah Rambo,

the President of the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston (the CCAB), followed Kelly, greeting and thanking the Mayor for his presence.

Sr. Maryadele Robinson, the Director of South Boston’s Laboure Center, was introduced as a “cheerful giver”, in the sense of St. Paul’s Epistle 2 Corinthians 9:7. She was also referred to as a “tireless leader”, with her particular patron saints being Vincent de Paul, the apostle of the poor, and America’s Mother Elizabeth

Seton. Sr. Maryadele described Laboure as “a place of hope and opportunity”; she credited much of Laboure’s success to its supporters, like Jack Shaughnessy and Bill and Mary Bulger.

Early in Mayor Marty Walsh’s remarks, he joked about his being envious of Laboure. He admitted there was no comparable organization in his own neighborhood when he was growing up in Dorchester. He went on to describe the business boom along South Boston Waterfront – a new office tower at Fan Pier, along with the strength of the hightech, biotech, and the life sciences in and around South Boston. He also confirmed his support of Boston’s marine heritage

and the jobs it is (and will be) creating – the fishing industries, ocean shipping, and marine-related manufacturing. The jobs created by such enterprises are all skilled, permanent, and labor-intensive.

Walsh mentioned the meetings he has scheduled at the Parkman House that are global in scope – meetings that ask the question, “How can Boston do business with cities and nations around the world?”

Mayor Walsh went on to ask that everyone at the Breakfast Meeting plan on attending the Laboure Center’s Spring Benefit on Thursday evening, April 24. He emphatically stated that he didn’t become Boston’s Mayor because of ambition or renown. He said, “I ran for Mayor because I love helping people, and because of places like Laboure.” As an example, he told a brief story of how Laboure had helped a homeless person that he (Walsh) had referred to them.

At the end of his talk, Walsh received a spontaneous standing ovation from the meeting’s attendees. He then received a commemorative plate, which was conceived as an award by Fr. Joe White of St. Vincent de Paul Parish.

It’s a cliché, of course, but there wasn’t a dry eye anywhere at the end of each gathering.

Exactly what happened that caused Walsh and Kennedy to lose their lives in the Beacon Street fire has not been determined yet.

One conjecture (unsubstantiated at this time) deals with the incredibly rapid, wind-whipped spread of the fire. It was so rapid that it is possible the first fire hose burnt up

before water could be sent through it to where Lt. Walsh and F.F. Kennedy had positioned themselves.

Whatever led to their deaths, they are heroes – heroes who gave of themselves in order to protect the public in a densely populated area of the City of Boston. Words fail to describe the magnitude of their sacrifice. Perhaps only quotes from the Bible are close to being adequate, as in the Gospel of John: “Greater love has no man, than he who lays down his life for others.” Or perhaps from Matthew: “Well done, thou good and faithful servants.”

As South Boston Youth hockey demonstrated last Sunday, we won’t forget. Please keep an eye out for the various fundraising efforts that will be used to help the families of Lt. Walsh and F.F. Kennedy.

SBNH Summer Leadership Intern Program The South Boston Neighborhood House is happy to announce that the Summer Leadership Intern Program (S.L.I.P.) for youth ages 11-14 is back for another year!

The S.L.I.P. program is designed to give youth between the ages of 11-14 an opportunity to intern over the summer at a local business in South Boston.

Two days a week S.L.I.P. youth will also participate in workshops, trainings and field trips that are designed to help develop career skills and critical thinking needed in the workplace. There are only 12 spots available so we ask that you be able to commit to the entirety of the program from July 1st, 2014 to August 23rd, 2014 before applying.

Participants will also receive a stipend upon completion of the program.

In order to apply youth will be asked to fill out an application and write a short

essay. Once youth have returned their application and essay they will be contacted to come into the Neighborhood House and interview for the position.

Applications are available at the South Boston Neighborhood House at 136 H Street in South Boston from April 16-April 30. Selections for positions will be completed by early June.

SH/SB “Cupid Splash” a Success MIX 104.1, Legal Chowda, and

Save the Harbor/Save the Bay (SH/SB) held their 2014 “Cupid Splash”.

Despite cloudy weather and 35 degree water, hundreds showed up in costumes ranging from glorious to bizarre. Every one of them splashed, and not so incidentally, raised over $30,000 for future beach programs.

Harpoon Brewery were on hand to make it a real party occasion.

This “Cupid Splash” was arranged and emceed by Bruce Berman.

He’s the Director of Programs for SH/SB, and had previously served as the President of SH/SB. Patty Foley succeeded Bruce in the SH/ SB Presidency a few years ago.

Over the last six years, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay (SH/ SB) has raised funds by arranging beach plunges. So why does Save the Harbor/Save the Bay call these plunges by the name “Cupid Splash”? To show how much the participants love our beaches, that’s why. And many plungers show up in Cupid costumes or something equally eye-catching.

events took place along South Boston’s beautiful beachfronts.

Saturday’s most recent “Cupid Splash” at the M Street side of the Curley Community Center was as colorful as it gets. Many of the 250 splashers came in costumes that evoked Cupid, in testimony of how much they love South Boston‘s beaches. JetBlue, Tasty Burger,

What’s perhaps most important about the SH/SB efforts is that they have been extremely effective.

South Boston and the beach towns on many miles to either side of us now enjoy some of the cleanest, purest beach fronts in the nation.

It hasn’t been easy – it’s taken years – but our local beaches can now be safely used virtually 100% of the time during the hot summer months.

On Friday evening, March 28, at the Walsh gym, the Gate of Heaven ninth-grade boys’ travel team defeated Gatey’s tenth-grade squad, 64-63, to win the 2014 CYO Vicariate Championship. Chris Knight (18 pts./4 treys) and James Moccio (22pts./3 treys) were SBOL’s co-MVP’s.

The teams started tentative as evidenced by turnovers on both ends of the court. The ninth-graders settled down and disrupted their opponent’s offensive flow with an effective fullcourt press. They subsequently went on a 10-0 run to take a 10-2 lead. The tenth-graders kept the game within reach and found themselves in the hole, 26-19 at the break. The game was still within reach even though Coach Joe Kelly’s boys missed critical free throws.

Early in the second half, the ninthgraders took a 31-21 lead, but their foe battled back to cut the deficit to three, 31-28. Coach John Knight’s team responded and went on a 10-2 run to realize a 41-30 advantage. The tenth-graders didn’t call it a night and

The members of the Condon Community Center swim team are an enthusiastic group of young swimmers.

They are fortunate to have dedicated coaches, who want to see their swimmers embrace this sport as a means to keep physically fit and use their time in a productive manner. Along the way these swimmers are also learning that hard work, discipline, and attention to technique will pay off in the end.

“This year’s team has gone through a great transition,” said James Warren, the head swim coach. “They’ve gone from just having fun to bearing down and putting in the time, effort, and focus to reach their potential. The improvement has been great.

His favorite pro is Bruins defenseman, Zdeno Chara. His favorite is the freestyle event. Someday, he’d love to compete in the Olympics for America or be a US Marine like his dad.

Olivia Rose McCarthy, 8, is a secondgrader at the South Boston Catholic Academy (SBCA). She enjoys math class, macaroni and cheese, and tuning into Selena Gomez. Her favorite is the freestyle event. She hopes to be teacher.

Mya Donovan, 7, is also a second grader at the SBCA. She enjoys recess,

macaroni and cheese, and Taylor Swift.

Her favorite is the freestyle event.

Eventually she plans on being a professional babysitter.

Ella Schweier, 7, is a first-grader at the British School of Boston which is located in Jamaica Plain. She enjoys reading, spaghetti, and One Direction.

She hopes to be a singer, or pianist, or a ballerina.

Mary Lee, 7, is a first-grader at the Condon. She likes reading, pizza, and Michael Jackson. Her favorite event is the breaststroke. She intends to be either a firefighter or a marine.

South Boston Catholic Academy Sixth Grade News On March 19th, Grade 6 students of South Boston Catholic Academy attended the MIT Museum to participate in a science class on Holography. They learned about the Science and Math behind this 3-D photography concept and viewed holographic pictures in the museum exhibit in addition to viewing other interesting and informative exhibits on display.

March Madness was alive at South Boston Catholic Academy, Grade 6 vs Faculty and Staff.

Annually students in grade 6 play basketball against the faculty and staff.....always a great day -Certificates were also presented to the students who played on the basketball teams this year. Congratulations!

Cadet Champs Crowned Coach Bobby McGarrell’s hoop squad wins back-to-back titles.

Recently, at the Walsh gym, the Jack McDonough Club defeated the Metro Energy Club by two points in overtime, to capture Gate of Heaven CYO Cadet League Championship. It was the second straight year that the Coach Bobby McGarrell’s squad captured the title. Slick and quick point guard, Pat McAloney, was SBOL’s MVP. He netted ten points and had five assists.

“What a fantastic finish to an incredible season,” he said. “…An OT victory in the championship game. You wouldn’t want it any other way. The team played hard all year and their determination culminated in a title.

I’m so proud of them. They are great bunch of kids. It was a pleasure to coach them.”
