Final Meeting – 2015 Parade

It is customar y to hold a final wrap-up meeting about the St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade during the week before the Parade. This year’s final meeting was held last Tuesday evening in the conference room at the MassBay Credit Union.

Elected officials and first responders were invited to meet with the Allied War Veterans Council (the AWVC) and Parade organizers. The main topics of this meeting were public safety, orderly assembly/dispersal, and general good order on a day when upwards of a million spectators may visit South Boston.

As you know, the 2015 Parade is scheduled for this coming Sunday afternoon,

March 15. It is usually held on the Sunday before St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day, March 17. The Parade’s assembly area (again as usual) is in the vicinity of Broadway Station, from the Fourth Street Bridge over to the Gillette parking areas. You are advised that the roadways through this area – Dorchester Street, the Kelly Bridge, the Fourth Street Bridge, and West Broadway itself – are impassable to vehicle traffic from mid-morning till late afternoon on Sunday.

The Parade will step off promptly at 1 p.m. Because of the record-breaking snowfall in Januar y/Februar y, the Parade route has been shortened; it will disperse in Marine Park at the Farragut statue. It will not loop back continued on pg 2

Parade Meeting through the residential areas of South Boston to Andrew Square. The only stop it will make is a short one at M Street Park – to emplace a wreath at the Vietnam Memorial.

The Parade is also shorter this year. It’ll be composed of 100 marching units, compared to 150 or so in a more typical year; it will last for approximately two hours, instead of the normal three+ hours.

It seems that the “second Parade” by the Veterans for Peace will not be marching this year. There’s no way to predict the size of the crowds from outside of South Boston, but it’s certain that the shortened route means that Broadway will be jam-packed.

The Parade order of march is highly varied.

Only 22 groups in the Parade are militar y units. A third of these are veterans’ units (i.e., not

WWW.SOUTHBOSTONONLINE.COM on active duty); another third are ceremonial in nature, like the Lexington Minutemen reenactors. Only eight groups are from an active militar y unit. So enjoy – there’s something for ever yone.

Volunteers, led by Tim Duross of the AWVC, have done a heroic job of clearing snow piles along Broadway.

In Tuesday’s Parade meeting, Tim gave a special thank-you to American Sweeping Co. of Dorchester.

You are asked to keep track of the snow removal signs along Broadway, and to park accordingly – most of the snow removal will have been completed yesterday (Wednesday).

The parking rules on the day of the Parade are too numerous to list here in full.

One key factor is keeping roadways open and accessible in case of fires and emergencies. The State Police will allow parking on Day Boulevard, but will close the Boulevard when these slots are full.

They’ll also allow cars with South Boston resident stickers to park on Castle Island from 10 p.m. Saturday, the 14th, until 11 p.m. Sunday.

Please note that parking will be ver y scarce all around the Marine Park area on Parade Day, because that’s where the buses that brought the marching units to the Parade will gather to pick them up when the Parade ends. Read the posted signs; log onto southbostonparade.org – before you make a decision where to park. And please recognize that any car found parking on any public grassy area will be immediately towed.

Excessive drinking has caused problems at Parades in the past. The bars will open at noon on March 15; most of them have agreed to close at 7 p.m. on Sunday. Many bars will charge admission and will strictly limit the number of patrons allowed in. Police officers will be stationed outside each bar. When asked for

his advice, Station 6 Captain John Greland bluntly stated, “Don’t drink”.

According to him, public drunks will receive a $200 citation and will be subject to arrest (not a ver y good way to end Parade Day).

This year, Broadway Station will handle most of the passengers coming to the Parade, because Andrew Station isn’t on the shortened Parade route. The “ T” is holding a safety meeting on Thursday, which is after our deadline at South Boston Online. We advise you to check the “ T ’s” web page or look at the news outlets to see how they will handle the crowds, which are certain to gather at Broadway Station. Keep yourself posted.

And by all means, enjoy the Parade on Sunday. Just remember (please) that it’s a family friendly event, which honors our veterans and is dedicated to the men and women of our Armed Forces.

Senator Forry Hosts 2015 St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast

Sunday March 15, 2015 at Boston Convention Center in South Boston State Senator Linda Dorcena Forry will host the annual St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast on Sunday, March 15 at the

Boston Convention and Exhibition Center from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Breakfast, which spotlights Irish and Irish-American culture, will be televised in its entirety on New England Cable News (NECN).

Last year marked a milestone in the event’s renowned history as Sen. Forry became the first person of color and the first woman to host the Breakfast. The event was widely viewed as a success, as Forry and her colleagues roasted one another and welcomed Ireland’s Prime Minister Enda Kenny to the stage— another first in the event’s history.

“I was deeply honored to host last

year’s St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast and I am excited to do it again,” said Senator Forry. “This is a time-honored tradition in South Boston — and across New England— and I am grateful to take on the responsibility of organizer and host. We are working hard to make sure that this year’s breakfast is a fun and roaring success.”

Senator Forry, who represents the First Suffolk district, created a non-profit foundation, the First Suffolk Partnership, to raise the necessary funds to make the event possible. The breakfast will once again be broadcast live throughout the region by NECN

(New England Cable News). Jim Braude, longtime host of “Broadside with Jim Braude” will return to lead the interviews and host the broadcast with analysis by NECN’s political reporter, Alison King and news anchor Latoyia Edwards.

The final line-up for this year’s breakfast is still in development, but most of the state’s most prominent leaders are expected to attend including Governor Charlie Baker, Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh, US Senator Elizabeth Warren and many more. The South Boston elected delegation will all participate in the event.

Our capstone event, The Evacuation Day Banquet will be this Friday night at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.

Among the over 300 attendees will be local residents, business leaders, and elected officials including our Mayor Martin J. Walsh, Congressman Stephen Lynch, Governor Baker and numerous other state and local elected leaders.

This year’s special award recipients include South Bostonian, Rita McCarthy, who will be presented

the John W. McCormack Award for distinguished public service; and South Boston resident Nicole Bollerman,a school teacher at UP Academy, for her unselfish act of

kindness after winning $150,000 contest and donating it back to the school where she teaches, will receive the John Joseph Moakley Outstanding Citizen Award.

Our annual Shamrock Award winners will be Leo Fahey, Business Agent from Pipefitters Local 537, and Noreen Rosher, of the City-Side Civic Association.

Evacuation Day and Memorial/ Historical Exercises on March 17th

A Mass will begin the celebration at St. Augustine’s Chapel; the oldest Catholic Church in Boston will be celebrated by Father Joe White at 9:00AM. The exercises will then proceed by a gathering up on the foot of Dorchester Heights (top of Telegraph St.) Approximately 10:00A.M., to observe and celebrate the British evacuation of Boston in 1776 – the first colonial victory of the Revolutionary War. Henry Knox, a colonial

Colonel at the time, brought the British cannons from Fort Ticonderoga in upstate New York. State Representative Nick Collins, Senator Linda Dorcena-Forry, Past SBCA President Bernie O’Donnell and South Boston Historical Society’s Bob Allison will chair the event.

The Association encourages all to attend and bring a friend to this important part of American history, as they will announce the poster and essay contest winners. Due to conditions up at the Heights,the plan is to present awards at the chapel after mass. Clerk of Courts Maura Doyle will chair the awards presentation.

Parade Volunteers at Work

“Now, oh winter of our discontent … “, as the Bard says.

The snows of late January and February set many records, culminating in a sizable, backbreaking removal task. That conflicted seriously with the plans for the St. Patrick’s Day/ Evacuation Day Parade on Sunday afternoon, March 15.

Well, Boston, South Boston, and the Allied War Veterans Council (the AWVC) have stepped up. Last Saturday and Sunday, led by AWVC Parade Coordinator Tim Duross, local unions, their pieces of equipment, and many, many volunteers went along East Broadway from the Farragut statue to L Street, removing all the snow.

This will allow spectators to view the Parade safely, while it proceeds unencumbered over cleared streets.

The Parade route will still be shortened – from the usual staging area around Broadway Station to the dispersal point at the Farragut statue. However, well over

100 units, bands, and floats will take part as usual. And the Parade will step off promptly at 1 p.m., as it always has. The first units will likely reach the Farragut statue between 2 and 2:30 p.m.

It’s timely to point out the volunteer nature of South Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day/Evacuation Day Parade.

Funds for

the Parade are raised every year from South Boston’s residents and businesses.

The mem-

bers of the Allied War Veterans Council – all 15 of them – put in an incredible number of volunteer hours each year on the Parade’s arrangements.

And now, the final removal of South Boston’s record-setting snows is being carried out by volunteers, aided by the City and the merchants along Broadway.

The 2015 Chief Marshal’s Banquet

The 2015 Parade Chief Marshal’s Banquet was an impressive event.

The Hall on the third floor of the Lithuanian Club (368 West Broadway, and yes, there’s an elevator) is a bright, spacious venue. The Hall was full of approximately 200 guests.

Many of Boston’s elected officials took part.

Kevin Conroy is this year’s Parade Chief Marshal of the 2015 St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade. Kevin is well known for his piping at numerous South Boston events; his home group is the Greater Boston Firefighters Pipes and Drums. He’s active in several worthy causes, including the Scleroderma Research

fundraiser at the L Street Tavern during the Annual Polar Plunge – every New Year’s Day at the Curley Community Center.

The Chief Marshal’s Banquet was an all-you-can-eat, corned-beef-

and-cabbage feast – what else, after all? The Banquet was complete and authentic. It featured thinly sliced corned beef, perfectly boiled potatoes (praties?), and crunchy cabbage.

Along with this came turnip, carrots, and beets – all perfectly boiled, too.

The Irish soda bread not only contained raisins but also had a touch of caraway – the way to serve it, in this writer’s opinion.

The Banquet ceremony honored the Parade Chief Marshal – Kevin

Conroy in this year of 2015 A.D. He received a standing ovation as he took the podium. Fitzgerald VFW Post Vice Commander Ed Flynn then presented Kevin with his Chief Marshal’s cap, on behalf of John Mullen. Conroy’s other awards included citations from Boston and the Commonwealth, a fine crystal pitcher, and a clock fabricated from a plaque with Marine Corps emblems.

In Kevin’s remarks, he complimented Tim Duross, who was overseeing snow removal along this year’s abbreviated Parade route (from Broadway Station along West and East Broadway to the Farragut statue). He mentioned the ongoing hard work of the Allied War Veterans Council (the AWVC), part of which is the annual raising of private funds to finance the Parade. He said that spring is here and stated how honored he was to be the 2015 Chief Marshal. “See you next Sunday,” he concluded, as his family joined him at the podium for photographs.

Even All that White won’t Stop Green

By Ray Flynn Former Mayor of Boston and a former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican.

Not everyone is happy that South Boston’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade will be shorter this year, thanks to the snow that’s still piled up on roads and sidewalks, but I’m sure of one thing — it’s still going to be a fine parade.

I was talking with a neighbor the other day at the South Boston library who was upset the parade wouldn’t go past her house this year as it always has.

“I know we’ve had a lot of snow, but why can’t the city remove it?” she asked.

I told her the city had been working hard to clear the snow,

but let’s face it, it’s a big city.

“I think they have done a pretty good job,” I said, although it’s not what she wanted to hear.

The many people involved in the parade work hard for months to bring out the best in our community. Sure, it’s a different South Boston, but it’s still “hometown” for all of us longtime residents and newcomers.

Many loyal neighbors turned out Friday night at the L Street Tavern to ­ f inancially support the ­ p arade. Sure we talked about the parade being cut short, but we also talked about the good old days growing up in Southie. We talked about getting together with family and friends on St. Patrick’s Day and singing a song or two.

I especially remember cheering on our returning combat veterans and the local sports teams that won state championships. I even remember seeing the president of Ireland and the future president of the United States marching in the parade and having hot tea and Irish soda bread with the neighbors.

I’m certain that once again St. Patrick’s Day will be a fun day for young and old. Why wouldn’t it, when we have so many fond memories of seeing relatives we haven’t seen in a while and watching our hard-working parents set the table with food for anyone who stopped by.

As Ed Flynn said in introducing parade Grand Marshal Kevin Conroy Friday night, “We may not have much, but

we have loyal, patriotic friends and family, that makes us rich people.”

Neighbors and the city will have the streets cleared for the many spectators and visitors, because that’s who we are.

As South Boston community activist Vinny Collins once said, “Tell us what we can’t do, and we’ll do it. South Boston is a state of mind. It’s where your heart is, not where your feet are.”

C’ead Mile Failte (A Hundred Thousand Welcomes) is what you’re likely to hear next Sunday in South Boston. Celebrate with pride wherever you come from.

But most of all, remember, as the song goes, “that you belong to Southie, and Southie belongs to you.”

Collins, Boston Delegation Meet with Providers to Talk Restoration of Addiction Services in Boston On March 4, Victory Program President & CEO Jonathan Scott was joined by colleagues Bill Sprague, CEO of Bay Cove Human Services and Tom Bierbaum, CEO of Volunteers of America, at a meeting with the Boston Delegation at the Massachusetts State House to discuss the Commonwealth’s opiate epidemic and its impact on Boston. The meeting was called by Boston Delegation Chairman, Representative Nick Collins (D-South Boston) in the House Members Lounge and was attended by over 15 offices.

“It was very important for the members of the Boston Delegation to meet with representatives from those programs that have been adversely impacted by the closure of the Long Island Bridge,” said Rep. Collins.

“Collectively, these programs pro-

vide two-thirds of Boston’s long-term recovery beds for women as well the city’s largest detox unit, which helps over 5,000 people per year.

These valuable programs are currently offline as the Commonwealth endures the current opioid crisis and it is our responsibility to help stabilize these vital programs so that they can get back to work saving lives.”

extreme loss of vital addiction treatment services in the state’s network since the closure of their respective agencies on Boston’s Long Island on October 8, 2014 and difficulty the agencies face for re-sighting their services. Victory Programs was one of three state funded addiction treatment agencies with programs on Boston’s Long Island that was evacuated when the Long Island Bridge closed abruptly. Victory Programs’ Joelyn’s Family Home – a 47-bed women’s recovery program – was the Commonwealth’s largest recovery home program for women. The shuttering of this program and the two others has led to Boston losing 70% of its women’s recovery home beds, and 50% of the city’s detoxification services.

2015 marks Victory Programs’ 40th year of opening doors to hope, health and housing for individuals and families in need. Since its inception in 1975, the agency has expanded to 18 housing and health programs providing shelter and recovery services to 2,300 people annually. Five Honorees at Kickoff Breakfast

The South Boston Citizens’ Association (the SBCA) is the oldest such organization in America. It has begun, and still observes, many of South Boston’s long-standing traditions. Last Saturday, February 28, at The Cornerstone, the SBCA held its Annual Jimmy Kickoff Breakfast – a long-standing tradition on its own.

One of the key elements of the Kickoff Breakfast is the awarding of the Henry Knox “Unsung Hero” Awards, which are presented to caring and diligent residents of South Boston - who make their contributions to South Boston life “below the radar”. They work quietly and without thought of gain.

They are “unsung heroes”, in other words.

The awards they receive at the

Kickoff Breakfast are named for Henry Knox, a bookseller from Boston, who rose to become Washington’s Major General of Artillery during the Revolutionary War. Knox’s career began when he led the trek to and from Fort Ticonderoga in the winter of 1775-1776 that brought 59 captured cannons back to Boston 240 years ago – cannons that were emplaced on South Boston’s Dorchester Heights and drove the British from Boston on March 17, 1776. We now celebrate that date as Evacuation Day. After the war, Knox was appointed the first U. S. Secretary of War; among his other achievements, he was responsible for building the USS Constitution – “Old Ironsides”.

Yet Henry Knox is comparatively unknown – an “unsung hero”, in other words.

The numerous activities of these five devoted people include veterans causes, Community Center oversight, youth sports, fundraising/ donations, recovery from substance abuse, and citywide efforts of all kinds. All five are truly heroes of our times.

And for those of you who missed this year’s Jimmy Flaherty Kickoff Breakfast, please make it a point to attend next year. Why? Because it’s a great South Boston “time”, that’s why. Curragh’s Fancy beguiled the sellout crowd at The Cornerstone with a variety of Irish music. City Council President Bill Linehan joined in one of the sets.

A huge breakfast was served, with

lots of juice, coffee, and petite cinnamon rolls to go along with the eggs, toast, bacon, sausage, and potatoes.

The remarks during the award presentations were both brief and to-the-point. Bill Linehan, Rep. Nick Collins, Ryan Spitz, Michael Donovan, and Ed Flynn made the awards; SBCA President Tommy McGrath oversaw the award ceremony.

Mayor Marty Walsh dropped by for the ceremony, and spoke about (wouldn’t you know it?) his decision to start removing parking space savers on Monday.

Saint Vincent’s CYO Champs Capture Vicariate title with victory against Saint Leonard’s

On Friday, March 6, at the Saint Agatha’s gym in Milton, Saint Vincent’s CYO seventh and eighth grade boys’ team, defeated Saint Leonard’s of the North End, 65-62, to capture the CYO Vicariate Championship. This Vicariate includes all the parishes fielding teams in Boston and the South Shore.

In first place with a 13-1 record, Saint Vincent’s drew a first round bye and then had to defeat a talent-laden Saint Agatha’s squad.

Although their leading scorer, Keon Jackson, was sidelined with a foot injury, Saint Vincent’s eked out a hard-fought 56-53 victory to propel them into the finals. Djei-

At This Point, Space Savers are Just Down Right Disrespectful space savers in the second week

I gave a small fist pump with my left hand as I made it through the second Monday in March as it was time to leave work and travel back to Southie; I was exhilarated by the first sunny 40 some odd degree day that we’d had in Boston in nearly three months. However, as I pulled onto F street from Old Colony and directed my gaze toward the sidewalks, I noticed something odd, many of my fellow Southie residents still had their orange cones, barstools, chairs, and even broken printers sitting square in between a snow bank and another car saving their spots. “Has it even snowed in the last two weeks!” I exclaimed to myself disgruntled by the fact that I would not be able to park on my own street again because of the “entitlement” felt by others that led them to continue to claim parking spots that they likely did not even spend time shoveling out.

This winter, the second snowiest on record, has certainly been especially harsh...believe me I’ve done my fair share of shoveling, waiting for delayed subway trains, and climbing over the snowbanks that have piled up excessively high on Southie’s sidewalks. I’ll be honest that I’ve also used my fair share of space savers (chairs, laundry baskets, and recycling bins) to save my spot after a few hours of digging out. But, I am aware (like all of my fellow Southie residents) that as of March 2nd, Mayor Marty Walsh had banned the use of space savors in the city of Boston. When I arrived back in Southie from

At this point, the use of a space savor is a blatant disregard for the rights of Southie residents to park on the streets and a direct detriment to commerce in our neighborhood. Those that continue to use space savors are like the guy in your foursome that continues to give himself a preferred lie even when he drives his ball deep into the rough.

Not only are we disobeying the city’s mandate on space savers, but from a morality standpoint, is this truly the selfish community that we have become? I like to believe that there is still some hope in our neighborhood that we actually still do have respect for our neighbors.

For the most part I have faith in South Boston, as I have witnessed friendly locals shoveling sidewalks for both the elderly this winter and single mother households, yet unfortunately there is a small group of people choosing to bring our neighborhood to a level of disgust that I have not previously witnessed in my time here as a resident.

On Monday evening, March 2, 2015, at the Tynan Community School Center gym, the annual Saint Patrick’s Evacuation Day free throw competition was held.

The winners in the ten and under boys’ division were, Charles Conners in first place, Christian Centron in second place, and Mario Blasi in third place. The winners in the ten and under girls’ division were, Nina Kumar in first place, Teagan Fitzgerald in second place, and Megan Harrison finished in third place.

In the thirteen and under boys’ division, Jake Harrison came out on top,

Mike Brooks finished second, and Kevin Cully took home the bronze.

In the thirteen and under girls’ division, Allison McGough is this year’s champion, Emma Gillis grabbed the silver, and Rebecca Donovan captured the bronze medal.

In the seventeen and under girls’ division, Jackie Czar won the gold, Lily Joyce came in second, and Jacqueline Beggan won bronze. In the seventeen and under boys’ division, slick and quick Mike Walsh won it all, followed by Harry Cully and Joey Maiullari respectively.

“It was a great night for the kids,” said Tynan Center longtime fixture, Kathy Davis. “It’s always an enjoyable time and everyone was quite competitive. I always look forward to this event.”

Be Wary of Zillow Zestimates Prospective sellers often ask me to give them a quick estimate on how much their property is worth. Even after working in the real estate business for almost 30 years now, it’s not an easy question for me to answer. And while I don’t mind giving sellers a ballpark figure, it’s frankly a question that I’d be much more comfortable answering after doing a thorough walkthrough inspection.

Zillow is an online service that seeks to answer that question in a matter of seconds by generating market value estimates for properties based on a number of criteria – including square footage, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, etc.

But Zillow is solely an online service and uses an algorithm to estimate your home’s value. They don’t do any kind of home inspection and they don’t have intimate knowledge of local markets. So when I heard an admission recently made on “CBS This Morning” by Zillow’s CEO that his company’s “Zestimates” can have a median error rate of as much as 8%, I wasn’t surprised. A median error rate that high means that half of Zillow’s estimates are off by less than 8%.

But that also means that half of all “Zestimates” are off by more than 8%.

And according to an article written last month for the “LA Times” by Kenneth Harney, Zillow’s median valuation error rate varies greatly by location. While rates in Seattle may only have a median error rate of around 6%, Harney found that in New York City rates can be off by as much as 19.9% in Manhattan and 12.9% in Brooklyn. In one extreme case in Somerset County, Maryland, he found that rates could be off by as much as a staggering 42%.

Now let’s say that you’re selling your condo in Boston and use Zillow to get the current market value as opposed to using a realtor to do an in-depth home evaluation and set a price based off the current real estate market. Locally, “Zestimates” have a high-end error rate of around 20%. You sell your condo for $600,000 only to find out after the fact that a realtor would have valued your home at $720,000 – or 20% higher than the “Zestimate”. You’ve just lost out on $120,000 that you could have used to build equity

in a new home, pay off outstanding debts, buy a new car or pay for a child’s college tuition. Even at Zillow’s admitted 8% median error rate, you still could have lost out on more than $48,000 When I evaluate a property, the first thing I look at is your location. I look at whether your neighborhood is already established or if it is up and coming and then I drill down even further because in South Boston and Dorchester, for example, home values can vary greatly from block to block. I look at the overall condition and layout of your home or condo as recent renovations and a solid floor plan can add big dollars to the value. I also check what you have for amenities as they too can have a big impact on what your home is worth.

As an experienced realtor, I have the ability to gauge where local markets are at any given point and time and tell you if I think that you should list your property now or wait for a more opportune time. Local real state markets can fluctuate weekly. Just over a month ago, Boston was hit by the first of what would be a succession of storms that would lead to the snowiest February in our recorded history. Local prospective buyers have been snowed in for over a month now – so they are just itching to get out and look at properties. If I was to price your home for sale today, I’d certainly take that into consideration.

Let’s see Zillow come up with an algorithm that can do that.

South Boston’s very popular Senior Salute, which takes place each year during Southie’s St. Patrick “Season”, is named for Tom and Eddie Butler. Tommy Butler, Jr., emceed this year’s event, which

turned out to be huge success. St. Monica Hall was filled to overflowing with celebrating Seniors – a great time was had by all.

The 2015 Senior Salute was actually the combined effort of the South Boston Citizens’ Association (the SBCA), SBCA President

Tommy McGrath, Mayor Marty Walsh, and Emily Shea of the City’s Elderly Commission. They all co-sponsored the event, and it was a huge success.

He also earned his certification as an Orthopedic Specialist (OCS) in 1995 and taught both physical therapy and athletic training courses as an adjunct faculty member at Northeastern University and Boston University.

Over the last twelve years

Darryl has emerged as a leader in the physical therapy community, and was recently recognized as one of Boston’s top physical therapists by ekneewalker. He successfully developed physical therapy offices as a partner in a large physical therapy company, and has

taken leadership roles in the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), and the Northeastern University PT Alumni Group.

Paul “Santa Claus” Sarro

IN MEMORIAM - 15th ANNIVERSARY

Paul “Santa Claus” Sarro, 67, a long-time resident of South Boston, passed away on March 4, 2015. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Carmine Sarro and Dorothy (Trottier). Mr. Sarro was employed by Amtrack for more than 30 years and was well known to the residents of South Boston as the South Boston Santa Claus and Paul the Poet.

Father of Marie Antoinette Sarro of Massachusetts and Jessica Hinckley of New Hampshire. Dear brother to Maryann Sarro of Randolph and proud and cherished grandfather to Harmony, Sean and Caleb Hinckley.

He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family.

The family would like to thank the residents of South Boston for being a 2nd family to this unique and kind man.

His funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited, will be held Saturday, March 14th at 10:00am at St. John’s Church, 44 School Street, Quincy, MA. Visiting hours will be held Friday, March 13th from 4:00-8:00pm at the Hamel, Wickens & Troupe Funeral Home, 26 Adams Street, Quincy, MA. Interment will be private.
