A warm welcome to the players, staff and committee of Milton United for todays Hellenic one league game. Its another team we played back when we relaunched in 2019 in the challenge cup.

Defensively it was chalk and cheese to Saturday and we looked a threat on the counter where our final pass or quality in or around the box was lacking on the night. After conceding late on the players reacted really well to have a right go for the final ten minutes plus five minutes added time. The players went to the final whistle in search of an equaliser which was pleasing. It just wouldn’t bounce for us. The players are now under no illusions how hard they have to work to compete at this level. Organisation, decision making KAY and quality in key moments is the recipe for success. Out of the 19 team league we are probably 19th in terms of our resources and hardly out of nappies when it comes to being an established non-league club. The club has had a proud non league history but since the re launch in 2019 the club has only really started being ran as community business very recently. We were never going to close the gap in one preseason but everyone at the club is working hard after being crippled by historic debt to get on a level playing Nothingfield.about this season will be on a level playing field for us as a club. Its going to take an unbelievable team spirit and togetherness for us to establish ourselves at this level. We will have to show fight, resilience and dig deep like never before in our recent new 3 year history and meet this challenge head on. Enjoy the game UTS Rich Kay

Midweek games away are a huge challenge. It was a 3 hour round trip after work but the players gave a performance full of energy with a much better mindset and mentality. Abingdon will be a tough place to go this season.

It’s been a hectic start to life back at step 6. We have played 180 minutes of competitive league football where, bar a crazy 10 minutes against Long Crendon, we have been really competitive in both games. Our previous home game against Crendon we were bang in the game for an hour. It was never a 5-2 game but we were punished for some really poor game management and decision making Tuesday night away to Abingdon was much more like us.

RICHARD

“THE PLAYERS WENT TO THE FINAL WHISTLE IN SEARCH OF AN EQUALISER, WHICH WAS PLEASING...” 05

The squad’s togetherness on and off the pitch is quality and all the lads have good banter. But when we also need to get down to the knitty-gritty serious stuff we can.

CAPTAIN

SIMON BARBY

So, we move on to play Milton United today at BHP, and we need to bounce back and get our first 3 points on the table. We need to take what we learned from the first two games into this home fixture against Milton. We need to do the basics, defend properly and take our chances in front of goal. Doing this gives us the opportunity go and win this game and to kick start our season! We are delighted to have Kyle Locklin back with us in the squad. He will be a great addition on and off the pitch this season!

I have enjoyed the season so far even though we have not secured a win yet. We are all positive that we will get to winning ways today! Also, we are learning this new step up of football and we will have this new journey together, and we will get winning and climb that table in no time! Cheers!

WE NEED TO TAKE WHAT WE LEARNED FROM THE FIRST TWO GAMES INTO THIS HOME FIXTURE AGAINST MILTON “ ”

The start of the season has not been the start we have been hoping for, with the results not going our way. Our performance in the first half against Long Crendon was really good but, unfortunately, a 15 minute spell in the 2nd half cost us the game. We moved onto a midweek game against Abingdon, we battled well ,and put an aggressive and good performance in once again, but we marginally lost by 1 goal. Still, all-in-all it was a better performance!

REPORTMATCH

It was a tough day out when Long Crendon visited Bobby Hancocks Park for the opening match of the Hellenic League Division 1 season. Spirits were high at kickoff and both teams saw chances on goal within the first two minutes, setting up what many supporters hoped would be a tightly contested match. By the 26th minute Crendon had taken control of the flow of play and won a free-kick just outside the box. Even though Southam’s keeper, Lewis Hudson, got to the resulting shot on goal, it wasn’t enough and the ball sailed into the top left corner of the goal to start the scoring on the day. It didn’t take long, however, for the Saints’ forward, Melvin Mauritson, to get one back himself, and by the 27th minute the scoreline was level again. It was his first goal for club since coming back from a shoulder injury sustained during preseason.

After the match Head Coach Rich Kay spoke about the great start to the match and the quick spell that put them out of victory’s reach. “It was a really dissapointing result in the end...It was never a 5-2 scoreline. We were bang in the game, and managed to score within a minute of their free-kick to put it back at 1-1. And for the final 15-20 minutes we had a really good“But,spell.the game was lost in a 9 or 10 minute spell. We’ve gone 2-1 down and we needed to react a lot better. We’ve conceded 3 goals in 9 minutes. We were competing in the game, and then after that we were completely out of the game. Pretty poor decision making and defending to be honest.“The analysis after the game was pretty easy. At this level we’re going to get punished for mistakes. We can’t be making those mistakes and the decision making needs to be better.“You don’t mind losing to a good side, but to be honest, we gifted them some of those goals to put the contest out of sight. It felt like a missed opportunity.”

The Saints’ next match will be away to Abingdon United on Tuesday, 9 August, with kick-off scheduled for 7:45pm.•

Forward, Shane Osborne, did manage to find a second for Southam after executing a perfect free-kick, similar to Crendon’s in the first half, into the top corner in the 89th minute.Itwas only to be a consolation though as the afternoon ended with Crendon on top in a 5-2 scoreline.

MATCH REPORT 10

The lineup saw Ryan Harris back into the side and his leadership and voice was welcomed into the side that needed a bit of direction after Saturday’s match. The squad also saw the return of Andy Yeates in midfield to bring even more experience on the night, and the effects were felt as the match started very evenly contested. In fact, neither side could break the deadlock at half-time and the teams went into the changing rooms even at 0-0. In fact it wasn’t until the second half when Abingdon substitute, Jack Badger, found the back of the net after they cleared a Southam free-kick and were able to break away through the midfield. A well placed pass out to the wing and some intricate play around the box finally led to Hellenenic League Division 1, Bobby Hancocks Park,

One squad member, in particular, did end up impressing in Charlie Green, who picked up Player of the Match in his first start for the Saints. He has been in and around the club, recovering >

Conor McGrath setting up Badger with a pass over the defense and after a quick bounce he placed it into the back of the net past keeper Lewis Hudson.

Even with the goal to put them behind for the second match in a row, the Saints responded well and played the rest of the match in a style of play that impressed the coaching staff. However, in the end it wasn’t meant to be, and even after plenty of opportunities the Saints were unable to convert and ended the night in defeat at 1-0.

The team’s sense of spirit and togetherness impressed those watching, however, and it seems only a matter of time before a victory comes Southam’s way.

REPORTMATCH

Coming off of a 5-2 defeat could have left the team down and disappointed, but they were all in confident spirits going into the midweek match.

After a difficult opening day at home to Long Crendon the Saints only had a couple days rest before traveling to Oxford side, Abingdon United, for a weekday evening match under the lights.

in the aftermath of the match, Head Coach Richard Kay was full of praise for his team, even though they didn’t produce the ideal result.

“I thought we were very good first half. Its a tough place to go. They’ve put together a decent side this season, coming off the back of a disappointing season last season. “In terms of the first half we started really well. Fully of energy. We got in some really good situations in the counterattack and it was just some of the final balls and final pass that eluded us. We had a few flashes across the box where if we attack the 6-yard box we probably score. And we also defended really well. “In the second half they came on really strong. But we still stood strong and our mentality was really good. The biggest difference was that we stuck to our game plan and we stayed in our shape. The players were vocal. We were organised and we were physical. We got back to our basic principles.

“But again, the reaction was superb. We had 10 minutes plus stoppage time and the lads gave it their all. We had multiple opportunities to equalize and there were some great efforts. The team went right to the final whistle, and that’s all you can ask, especially with the amount of travel.

“It was also pleasing getting Ryan back, even though it looks like he might be out for about a week now, came in alongside Adam and they were superb and gave us a good foot-hold in the game.“The emphasis moving forward will be, can we play that hard with the same intensity and can we play with that aggression, but also play with better quality in the final third. But in the case of going away from home, I was really pleased.”

The Saints are home to Milton United this Saturday. •

11

“Unfortunately, at the minute it feels the footballing gods are against us. Ryan had to come off injured, and we had to shift things about. And we also got caught on the counter-attack and they scored with about 10 minutes to go.

“Charlie, who got Man of the Match, fully deserved, came in at left back. He was absolutely superb. He was aggressive, really good on the ball and everything I knew he would be. He came in and gave us a real balance.

“Preparation was much, much better. We got there nice and early and the warm up was good. The tempo was much better and the mindset was also much better.

“It was good to get a few key players back in some key areas and you could feel that it was more vocal across the pitch.

SOUTHAM UNITED FC

Saints moved into the Midland Combination in 1980/81 and immediately won the Division 3 title and completed the double by winning the Vase Final with a 3-1 victory over Kingsbury United. When the League was reorganised in 1983/84, United were invited into the Premier Division but after struggling for several seasons they were downgraded to Division 1 when it was discovered that their pitch was now too short owing to the construction of a bowling green next to it. It took until 1995/96 for United to get back into Premier Division football. In 1997/98 Saints enjoyed their most successful season in the Midland Combination finishing as Premier Division Runners Up and winning the Birmingham County FA Vase with a convincing 3-0 victory over Shirley Town. All time leading goalscorer (over 1,000 goals) and record appearance holder is Bob Hancocks who served the Club loyally in virtually every capacity. In 2002 Bob and his wife Anne received a presentation from the Club to mark their over 50 years of loyal service to Southam United and their contributions to the game were finally recognised by the FA Long Service Award in June 2012. In 2001 the Club merged with Southam Town FC, a progressive junior club formed in 1972 which, amongst other things, has pioneered Ladies and Girls football in Warwickshire. Long-term development plans have now been put into place to strengthen the football base in Southam both on and off the field. The Club is an FA Charter Standard Community Club. Currently, the Club’s range of junior teams runs from the Mini Soccer School (boys and girls of 5 years upwards) being introduced to the game in a fun and safe environment through the junior age groups up to the Under 16’s with some 250 players participating in coaching sessions and games throughout the season. The club also maintains a successful Wildcats and Girls section, encouraging more girls into the game and hoping to retain them for the future. This is with a view to eventually growing our own Ladies team.

First Team results from 1998 to 2004 were largely disappointing. A sixth placed MidComb Premier Division finish in 2004/05 augured well for the future but could not be improved upon in season 2005/06 thanks to inconsistent league form. There was, however, some comparative success in Cup competitions, including an appearance in the first ever Cup Final at the Ricoh Arena, when Saints finished as Runners Up to Coundon Court in The Coventry Charity Cup. Cup success was achieved in 2008/09 as the Club lifted the BCFA Midweek Floodlit Challenge Cup with a convincing 3 - 1 victory over Darlaston Town and again in 2010/11 with victory in the Telegraph Challenge Cup Final at The Ricoh Arena. Runners Up spot in the Premier Division was achieved in 2011/12 when the team fell away with the finishing line in sight.Inboth 2012/13 and 2013/14 the Club were runners up in the BCFA Midweek Floodlit Cup; and in 2014/15 were beaten finalists in the Les James Cup at Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium and the Coventry Charity Cup at Coventry City’s Ricoh Arena.

Southam United was founded in 1905 following the amalgamation of two village teams. Southam United, or “Saints” as they are known, has a long and distinguished history From 1947 to 1956 the club won most of the titles in the then prestigious Coventry and North Warwickshire League culminating in the Coventry Evening Telegraph Cup.

Southam United are also fully committed to supporting it’s volunteer coaches and developing homegrown officials. All managers and coaches are supported in following their ambitions to complete FA coaching courses and as of the 21/22 season, the club has supported 3 of its former junior players to undertake their referee qualifications. With more to follow - subject to courses being available.

Following a period of transition for the First Team and an absence of several seasons, the First Team successfully returned in 2018/19 playing in the Hellenic league and managed by Rich Kay. Since this time, and despite the challenge of COVID, the team have gone from strength to strength, gaining promotion and in the 2021/22 season are playing in the Oxford Senior League Premier. After one season in the OSL Prem the team was promoted to the UHL Hellenic League Division 1 at step 6 football, where they are looking to springboard to the next level.

Milton United continued after the war but folded in the early 1950s. The club reformed in 1958 and regained entry to the North Berks League. Milton became champions of the North Berks league for the first time in the 196263 Season. The club would then enjoy more league title success during the sixties with three further successes in the 1963-64, 1965-66 and 1969-70 seasons. While the club remained in the top flight throughout most of the seventies, the club suffered relegation to the second tier of The North Berks league at the end of the 1978-79 season. Two seasons later the club bounced back to the top flight when they finished as Champions of Division Two, at the end of the 1980-81 season. After being promoted back to the top division in the league the club, then went on to win the league a further three times, during the eighties, in the 1985-86, 1987-88 and 1988 89 seasons. The club also ended as runners-up in the Berks and Bucks intermediate cup in 1984. In 1989 they applied to join the Hellenic Football League. The application was successful and finished as runners up in their first season in both the First Division and the Division One Cup, also winning the Berks and Bucks Intermediate cup. As a consequence of their runners-up position they were promoted to the Premier Divisions and became Champions of the Hellenic League at their first attempt. They also retained the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Trophy. The Season after winning the Premier Division, Milton made its debut in the FA Vase, reaching the first round before being knocked out by Thame United. Staying in the Premier Division until the end of the 1993-94 season, when demotion to Division One because of the club not having floodlights. 1998 brought the move to the current home of Milton Heights, with floodlights being installed and the clubhouse was erected. The first season at the new ground secured promotion back to the Premier Division, however after finishing bottom of the table in the next two seasons the club was relegated to Division One East. Promotion was achieved once more three seasons in the 2003-04 season.

That season also saw the club reach the final of the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy, but losing in the final on penalties. The club stayed in the Premier Division until the end of the 2008-09 season when they were relegated back to Division One East, where they remained for six years. Season 2013-14 saw the team finish the season as Division One East champions by a margin of five points and promotion back to the Premier Division. Although Milton had achieved promotion in the Hellenic League before, this was the first time the club had ever been promoted as the division champions. The 2014-15 Season saw Milton re-establish their Step 5 Status, compete in the FA Cup and achieve the Ground Grade F required for Step 5. Milton’s FA Cup run surpassed their previous best and, in the process, defeating Combined Counties Chertsey Town and Southern League Marlow FC. The League campaign resulted in a respectable 14th place.

The ground improvements introduced another 50 covered seats under the main stand (taking the total seating to 100) and the introduction of 150 person covered standing area. The Club is currently going through a period of significant change, visitors to the Heights will be very aware of the new housing developments emerging alongside the grounds. In recent times a number of projects have been completed, we now have a new LED Floodlight System, new Pitch surrounds and dugouts. We have also invested a lot of effort in improving the main pitch playing surface. By the end of 2022 we also expect to launch our plans for a replacement for the clubhouse, a new Community and Sporting facility is the aspiration.

Milton start the 2022/23 season returning to the Hellenic League Division 1 with a new Management Team led by Christian Lawrence and Assistant Manager Tom Tatford. They will be assisted by Coach Craig Griffiths and very experienced Physio Mark Timbrell. The existing squad will have the addition of some new faces and young talent which will be formed into a new look Milton. With changes to the League introducing 3 more Oxfordshire teams we are all looking forward to some good local derbies in what looks to be a competitive League.

The club was a founder member of the North Berks Football League when it was first formed in 1909 and played under the name Milton Hill. Playing in the North Berks League for two seasons before returning again for the 1920-21 season, under the name Milton and finally ‘Milton United’ in the following season. In 1926 Milton gained their first trophy for beating Aston Tirrold by 8 to 2 in a play-off for the Division 2 (Abingdon) League title.

After a successful 2021/22 season in the OSL Prem, and a promotion to step 6 football, Head Coach Richard Kay made it no secret that he was out to find players to bring the squad to the next level and compete in the new league.

Centre-Half Mitch Boe Midfielder Andy Yeates

Winger Sol BloomerCentre-Half Charlie Fitzmaurice

The 27 year old centre- half comes to Southam United via Coventry Alvis, and has also featured for Long Buckby, where he stayed for 2 years, and AEI Rugby, where he got his start in men’s football.

An extensive off-season and preseason allowed Kay and his staff to look at a number of new players interested in joining the club, and by the time the first match rolled around on August 3rd, he has made his selection. Today we highlight 4 of those new players he has brought in to bolster an already young and exciting club.

It was exactly this ambition that brought Boe to Southam United and with the ever-evolving new set up he hopes to help the team progress through the leagues.

MITCH BOE

WELCOME TO SOUTHAM UNITED

Outside of matches on Saturday, Boe is a big Leeds supporter and tries to get to as many matches as he can.

Although the towering defender looks perfectly at home on Rich Kay’s back-line, he hasn’t always occupied that position. After playing in a more central midfield role when he was younger, the new Southam United addition grew to 6 foot and confidently moved to the back line, where he is able to play at any position.

>

Boe’s experience will undoubtedly help the squad, on-and-off the pitch, as the season progresses. Having won the Birmingham County FA Cup and the Coventry Telegraph Cup at the Ricoh with AEI Rugby, some of his favourite footballing memories, he will bring a winning mentality to an already ambitious club.

“My preferred position would be playing as an attacking midfielder or as a winger. I originally started as a box-to-box midfielder, but as I got older have developed more into a forward player, but have also played as a fullback in men’s football.”Inhisshort time already with Southam United, Bloomer has found a very fond memory in playing under the lights and winning the Bobby Hancocks Cup this season. He also says that some of his proudest moments include playing at Kidderminster Harriers playing ground, St. George’s Park and receiving his first start in men’s football playing for Leamington Hibs when he was 17 years old, a club where his brother and other close family members played. In discussing his reasons for joining Southam, Bloomer realizes the levels the club has set its sights on and is excited for the opportunity.

“Winning Player of the Year at 21 years old in the Midland Combination League, which was voted for by all the managers in the division has been one of my greatest honours so far. And this was in a team that only finished mid-table. Also winning promotion with Long Buckby to step 5 was a great honour as well.”Having already played under Rich Kay at Buckby and Hibs, it seems it was a no-brainer for Andy to come and join the rapidly progressing side here at Southam. “I’ve always had a soft spot for the club and only left when I did due to the club folding. So, I am happy to see where the club is atOutsidenow.”

SOL BLOOMER

Its no surprise Head Coach Rich Kay was happy with gaining the commitment of the experienced 23 year-old, as he is one of the more versatile new additions to the squad. An attribute that could prove handy as the season progresses.

Last season he played his football for Leamington U23’s/ reserves and also spent a few games with Balsall & Berkwell FC, after finally finishing the last 2 months of the season with Chelmsy Town. He has also played for other local teams such as Leamington Hibs and AFC Coventry Rangers.

Off the pitch Sol’s favourite things to do are photography, training and listening to music.

Last season new signing, Charlie Fitzmaurice, played for local rivals Stockton FC after just finishing University and looking to get back into Saturday football. That time saw him complete a successful 3 years playing at Nottingham Trent University. Prior to his time in Nottingham Fitzmaurice started his playing career at Leamington, having progressed from the youth team to the first team, before moving to Central Ajax in the Midland League to get game time and experience. It was his time at Leamington that he sees as one of the highest honours of his playing career so far.

of football Yeates enjoys spending time with his family and friends, watching sport, going to the gym and the cinema.

Apart from football Charlie loves music and seeing live shows. He also enjoys playing golf, watching boxing, football and Formula 1.

Similar to Mitch Boe, Charlie started on the pitch in the midfield, and even as a striker when much younger, before moving to his now preferred position at centre-back. His experience in this position has easily shown, picking up important minutes already in preseason and the first two league matches next to centre-half partner Adam Neale.

CHARLIE FITZMAURICE

ANDY YEATES

“I always followed them as a kid, so just to be able to train, and be part of the squad, was an honour for me.”

“It is a very well respected club in the area, with very good facilities. I’ve really enjoyed my time getting to know everyone and the coaching staff and players all work very hard to be the best. I’ve been made to feel part of the club and have been encouraged to express myself on the pitch. I look forward to trying to help the team win games.

He may be quiet off the pitch, but new addition Sol Bloomer certainly lets his play do the talking.

If experience and leadership was on Rich Kay’s shopping list, he found it in folds with new signing Andy Yeates. The 31 yearold comes to Southam from Long Buckby, where he played for 7 years. During that time, not only did Yeates gain time playing under Kay, but he also captained the side and received valuable leadership experience. The midfielder also played for Southam before his time at Long Buckby as well as playing for other various sides in the area. Like most young football players, Andy started playing up top, but over his career he has found a successful home in the central midfield, where he likes to establish possession and control the speed of play. Having had an already successful career, Yeates calls out two specific experiences that top the list.

17

Like many of our other signings, Fitzmaurice cites the growing ambitions of the club as his reasoning for joining this year.“It is a big club, with so much potential to keep getting better and better. The lads are class as well as all the staff. Its an exciting club to be a part of.”
