Welcome to the inaugural international edition of our Sourcing Summit.

For the last five years, we’ve been hosting this conference in New York, and in that time, it has grown into a marquee event that draws leaders from all corners of the industry.

This year, we’re excited to bring this format to Hong Kong. And it’s the perfect time for us to be here. Sourcing Journal, launched in 2010 as a resource for the business side of fashion, was recently acquired by leading digital media company Penske Media Corporation. And PMC’s interest in the publication stems from the same reason we’re all here: a recognition that decoding fashion depends on the supply chain.

Prior to launching Sourcing Journal, I was a sourcing agent, traveling to places like China, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Turkey. It hasn’t been long since I was in that role, but the industry has moved light years beyond where it was at the time. Then, the focus was almost exclusively on driving costs down to boost the bottom line. Today, the apparel industry has finally started to recognize that profitability lies in greater efficiency—faster decision making, fewer silos and more digitization.

During today’s Summit, you’ll hear from executives on how they’re contributing to the supply chain of the future. Discussions will center around ways they’ve improved agility in order to deliver on what the modern consumer really wants: value, immediacy and convenience.

Fashion’s winners and losers are no longer determined on the runways. We now know tomorrow’s leaders will be decided by what’s happening much further up the supply chain.

Sanjeev Bahl embraced the world of apparel manufacturing 29 years ago with Saitex, a state of the art denim manufacturer in Vietnam. The company’s manufacturing plants are built on environmental impact reduction technologies with a philosophy of creating positive social impact.

Sanjeev also runs an IT venture, SAI Digital, which builds e-commerce and digital software solutions. Providing education through two homeopathic colleges and a free clinic for children on the autism spectrum further diversified Sanjeev’s interests.

Sanjeev lives between Vietnam and New York. His future initiatives include bringing manufacturing back to the West and a postconsumer recycled products venture.

The fashion and luxury goods industries are Achim Berg’s passion and fields of deep expertise. Over the past 15 years, he has advised numerous leading brands, retailers, wholesalers and producers worldwide on a broad spectrum of sourcing topics ranging from a sourcing diagnostic for a European multi-label apparel retailer to a multiphased sourcing program for the leading functional clothing producer.

Achim is the initiator and author of the bi-annual McKinsey Apparel CPO surveys.

Furthermore, he organizes and hosts the annual McKinsey Apparel Sourcing Executive Roundtables in Hong Kong.

Achim holds a degree in Business Administration and Economics and a PhD in the same area, with a focus on strategy and value generation in the private equity industry.

As vice president of Global Business Development at MicroBenefits, Mason Chenn interacts with business leaders focused on the supply chain sustainability space, and leads his firm’s efforts on major engagements within the supply chains of global multinational enterprises including Apple, NIKE and the Walt Disney Company.

Mason brings a breadth of experiences and skills to his work in supply chains. He excelled in early-stage startups in product management, where he was focused on launching new product verticals aimed at driving security and efficiency for multinational corporations.

Mason holds an MBA and a BS in molecular biology from Brigham Young University, where he received the Eccles Scholarship for international business.

Professor Steven DeKrey is Associate Dean and Adjunct Professor of Management at HKUST. He is the founding director of the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA Program and continues to direct this world No. 1 ranked program. Under his past leadership, the MBA program of HKUST was three times in a row ranked top 10 in the world by the Financial Times and is currently in the top 15.

He also serves as director of the Saudi Arabia MBA Program which he initiated in 2012 with Saudi Aramco. His role at HKUST also includes an assignment to the HKUSTMoscow School of Management Skolkovo Partnership, where he represents HKUST as the chairman of the SKOLKOVO Academic Council in Moscow on a half time basis.

Spencer Fung is group chief executive officer and is leading the 110-year-old company through its transformation to create the supply chain of the future in order to help the company’s customers navigate the digital economy and to improve the lives of a billion people in the supply chain.

Spencer has been an executive director since 2008. Prior to becoming CEO in July 2014, he was the group chief operating officer responsible for building the company’s global infrastructure.

Robert Sinclair is president of LF Sourcing overseeing all business related activities for apparel, footwear and hard-goods, as well as sourcing and general merchandise. Robert joined Li & Fung in 2011 as Executive Vice President of Lifestyle Brands business unit and was promoted to Chief Operating Officer for LF Sourcing in 2013. Prior to that, he held senior positions in various capacities with VF Asia Ltd, the global procurement business unit for VF Corporation based in Hong Kong and Ralph Lauren Corporation.

Axel Nitschke works as strategy consultant for the advisory firm Strategy&, which belongs to the global PwC network. He is focusing on digital transformation in sourcing, supply chain and omnichannel retailing within the fashion and sports industry.

Prior to this, Axel was a member of the management board of the department stores Peek & Cloppenburg where he was responsible for the private label sourcing.

For Esprit he led the strategic development of sourcing. Axel started his career at the The Boston Consulting Group. He holds a doctorate degree in business administration and is living in DĂźsseldorf, Germany.

Juan Penagos is head of International Trading Fashion & Apparel Services Limited (ITFAS), the HKG trading office of Kiabi, the European fashion retailer within Association Familiale Mulliez (AFM), the large private French retail group. Juan is a former senior executive of Levi Strauss & Co., as well as former owner of a Latin American trading company.

MAY Sally Peng is focused on counseling multinational corporations with a wide variety of customs and international trade activities, including global trade regulations and customs laws, import/export control and process management, antidumping and countervailing duty matters, unfair trade actions and FCPA compliance. Sally also assists clients in determining whether their goods qualify for duty-free treatment under various free trade agreements or trade preference programs.

Sally currently serves as co-chair of the Apparel & Footwear Committee of AmCham Hong Kong and is a senior advisor to Hong Kong General Chamber of Textile Limited.

She is fluent in English and Mandarin. Sally holds a J.D. from the University Of Florida Levin College Of Law.

MAY Raymond Tan graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Guam. Raymond joined the Luen Thai Group in 1983 and has over 30 years of experience in the industry.

Raymond has received several awards including: the Young Industrialist Award of Hong Kong and the DHL/SCMP Owner-Operator award in 2003; Outstanding entrepreneurship, Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards Hong Kong and Capital Leaders of Excellence Awards in 2012; and Capital Entrepreneurship in 2013. Raymond is founder and chairman of Chelsea Football Foundation (HK) and chairman of the Tuloy Foundation (Philippines).

John S. Thorbeck founded Chainge Capital to develop and apply speed and flexibility for retailers and brands. He has collaborated extensively with Warren H. Hausman, professor of management science and engineering at Stanford University, to adapt the postponement strategy from electronics to fashion merchandising and sourcing.

Warren and John are co-authors of the “Zara Gap” financial metrics, and a fast fashion case study taught at Stanford.

John is a former CEO of GH Bass & Co (PVH) and Rockport (Adidas), and senior marketing executive for Timberland Co and Nike. John received an MBA at Harvard Business School.
