The problems facing this industry have gone mainstream.

A quick survey of the September issues, which typically focus on the latest silhouette or the hottest trends, quickly brought a different picture to light. The coverlines on American Vogue read, “Hope a Special Issue,” “100 voices on the future of fashion.” British Vogue’s lead story was, “What Will It Really Take to Fix Fashion?” Vanessa Friedman in the New York Times interviewed celebrity designers on “What’s next?” Every question and opinion was about tipping points, making the world a better place, the glut-of-stuff, and words like redefine, reimagine, reinvent and relevance. It shows an industry in crisis.

September was a busy month for me as well. To re-create our annual Sourcing Summit as a virtual event this year, I logged more than 30 hours of prep calls with our 60-plus speakers. With so much at stake, we wanted to fine-tune discussions to maximize value and learning for our audience.

From the headlines to those conversations with those of you on the frontlines, two things became clear: fashion is in crisis and fashion may not be able to fix itself. It will require outside voices and learnings to set new priorities for growth and profitability. The cover story today is this: “What Got Us Here, Won’t Get Us There.”

The old formulas of more doors, store comps and more inventory just don’t work anymore. Simply generating more demand will not solve fashion’s problem. Our businesses, to be relevant, must unlock working capital and find efficiencies in all aspects of the process, beyond just design and sales.

For one of the largest industries in the world, the pie is not growing. The urgent questions are: What do you stand for? Why are you essential? People need value and beauty and a better world. Is that how you define your brand?

Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater, the world’s largest hedge fund, sees three to seven years of recovery ahead. He says we are in the “era of lost growth.” In this reality, how does fashion find its footing? How does fashion remain relevant and sustainable? Unfortunately, the analysts tell us that inventory is not coming down fast enough, that promotions are still too prominent, sourcing risks too high and online investment too slow.

What are the new metrics of success? First, it is collaboration and unity as an industry-wide culture. Second, it is community with our consumers to contribute to a better world through sustainable fashion. Third, an accelerated commitment to change. And, fourth, it is confidence that fashion can pull through—with new learnings from outsiders, but brought to life as only insiders know how.

Can fashion fix itself? The answer is it must. And the future starts today.

It’s often said supply chains aren’t sexy—they’re not the stuff of flashy runway shows, stylized photoshoots or Instagram-ready moments. But they are the engine underpinning these fashion opportunities and every other consumer products industry out there.

Now, months into an ordeal that’s likely to drag on longer than anyone could have guessed and leave shopping forever changed, it’s up to apparel and footwear to leap forward, past where most companies had forecast they’d be even four or five years down the road.

But from the moment the global pandemic hit, supply chains were thrust into the spotlight as shoppers scrambled for disinfectant, searched for toilet paper and hunted high and low for yeast—often with little luck.

This remarkable acceleration is daunting but—if retail’s early response to the pandemic is any indication—it’s also doable. Just think about how retail workers were suddenly on the frontlines putting themselves in harm’s way to help the world hunker down.

Stores became fulfillment centers for armies of citizens suddenly facing stay-at-home orders. It was a swift transformation for a sector that had often stumbled in its attempts to keep in step with changing consumer demands and shopping patterns.

Meanwhile, apparel factories first stalled out, then sputtered back to life, pivoting to PPE as a means of keeping the lights on and the general public safe. With little to no demand for clothing and footwear in those early days, panic set in as questions arose about what to do with the avalanche of summer goods destined for now shuttered stores. The ensuing weeks revealed the character and the configuration of the apparel and footwear industries—and much of it wasn’t pretty.

The time for incremental change is over. It’s time for a R/Evolution.

No, we require one email per participant for the event, as the email is your username.

Can I access the event from a different computer than the one I registered on?

Yes, as long as you use the email address you used at registration. Note: you can only be logged in with your email address on one device at a time, so make sure you are not logged in on another computer when trying to log in.

How do I enter to win prizes?

We’re incentivizing you to explore the event platform and interact with fellow attendees and sponsors as much as possible. Visit the Gamification page to get the details on how to earn points and what you could win. Keep your eye on the leaderboard to see how you’re doing. The person who earns the most points first by the end of the event will win a pair of Apple Airpods Pro, and runners up will receive other great prizes

How do I communicate with other attendees during the event?

Click the “Attendees” link in the top navigation bar to search attendees by name. Click on the chat or social icon for the attendee you want to reach. Those messages will live in your “Inbox”.

How do I communicate with sponsors during the event?

You can visit sponsor rooms by clicking on the “Sponsors” link in the top navigation bar. Click the icon for the sponsor. In a sponsor room, click on a representative’s name below the sponsor’s description in the left panel. Then click the chat icon. Or leave your business card by clicking Contact in the upper righthand side of the screen and entering your details.

Q: How do I participate in the Breakout Sessions?

The Breakout Session topics will be listed in the Agenda under “Breakouts”. Select a topic from the list. (Note, there are multiple rooms per topic.) You will receive a prompt to turn on your camera and microphone. If the room is too full or you would like to change rooms, you can simply navigate back to the Agenda and select another topic/room.
