究，幾乎書書不同，特色各具的字體，當是電腦時代一大寶庫，亟待有心人去破解應用。 今日我們所談，做為商業設計之一環的書籍裝幀設計乃源自西洋，純然舶來，這樣說，想

必很少人會否認吧。

Fu Yueh-An

種因於歷史命運，台灣「現代化」始自日治時期。1900 年代之後，伴隨政治相對穩定，明 治維新以來種種文明開化政策與成果，逐漸由日本內地延續到殖民地台灣。商業出版自也 穩定發展起來。初期全靠輸入，來自東京與上海的出版品，源源不斷供應全島，台北「新 高堂」與嘉義「蘭記書局」恰可為此種「文化貿易」的代表。而後，從模仿出發，在地出版 漸漸有了自己的生命，無論官方或民間。今日吾人所津津樂道，投身書籍裝幀設計的立石 鐵臣（ Tateishi Tetsuomi ）、西川滿（ Nishikawa Mitsuru ）等人，即是在這樣的歷史脈絡 之下出現，其作品慣常以台灣本土元素為表現手法，但其濃厚的東洋風格，缺乏獨立性， 亦是不辯自明的。 1949 年，台灣歷史命運再經劇轉，國府流亡來台。戒嚴體制之下，言論自由完全凍結， 日治方才萌芽的本土出版，至此成了「發育遲緩兒」。外來的黨國資本佔據多數出版社， 書籍出版審查，格外嚴厲，不時便會發布所謂「禁書」名單。在此前提之下，一本書能出 版即屬幸運，遑論「裝幀設計」。一如當時人們稱嗜讀類型小說者為「讀武俠的」、「讀偵探 的」，當時出版行業裡，對於從事封面設計者的常見稱呼亦為「畫封面的」，其中實不無輕 視之意。 •

當然，1950、60 年代，台灣不乏特別突出的封面設計者，譬如廖未林、楊英風、陳其寬 等，卻多半視「畫封面」為行有餘力偶一客串者，正途猶是藝術創作。這種「業餘打工」心 理，自與日本畫家如竹久夢二（ Takehisa Yumeji ）、恩地孝四郎（ Onchi Kōshirō ）、橋口 五葉（ Hashiguchi Goyō ）等傾全力為一書「效勞」，顯有不同；將「裝幀設計」簡化成「封 面設計」這一傾向，更是深遠影響了日後台灣出版的發展。 1970 年代，台灣戰後嬰兒潮世代進入社會，經濟蓬勃發展讓主政者有了信心，出版政策略 為開放，因此出現了「戰後第一代出版人」，這股新血的注入，讓台灣出版產業迅速擴張， 不斷推陳激盪，封面設計逐漸受到重視。其中又以黃華成最受矚目，開拓也最鉅。出身師 大美術系的他，多才多藝，狂放不羈。 「不以善小而不為」，格外熱中於書籍裝幀設計。從 同人雜誌《劇場》起，從封面設計，圖文整合，乃至字體設計，即顯露出過人才華。日後 以遠景出版社為主要基地，以莊靈為主要攝影夥伴，以日常生活用品為主要視覺，設計出 了一本又一本帶有「普普藝術」風格的書籍封面，讓人耳目一新，引發讀者購買慾望，進 而觸發台灣平面設計史上一大革命。至於粉墨登場，親自「角色扮演」 （ cosplay ）封面主視 覺人物的大膽狂熱，更是走在時代前端，直到今天，猶無人敢於再次嘗試。 可以說，由於這位一輩子強調「不可著意，不可絕緣」的天才設計者橫空出世，台灣書籍 裝幀，無論質或量，都邁入一個新的階段。自此，字不僅是字，圖不再是圖，書籍也不只

是書籍。新一代的平面設計者如劉開、霍榮齡、李男等，紛紛出現，且多以「書籍裝幀設 計」為主要表現舞台，揚名立萬。 文化不停積累自然成為基因，人不能斷絕歷史的影響。經由前述脈絡敘述，我們或許更能 理解，2000 年之後嶄露頭角，曾獲六屆「金蝶獎」 （放在昔日美術大展，當屬「永久免審 查」）的王志弘，其根脈所繫，鍾靈毓秀之所由來。 王的作品，既有「批判的繼承」，亦有「創造的發展」，乾淨俐落、簡潔有力，幻化抽象， 風格自成。許多人以「現代感」稱之，想在東西洋作品找到傳承線索，最後卻發現，其根 柢誠然「灣生」摶成。他最為人所津津樂道，不同文字、字體變化運用（堪稱黃華成以來第 一人），恰恰說明了這一點：正是生逢其時其地，無形承接日本、歐美、中國文化因子， 加上自身琢磨思索，不斷學習，方始有此成就。─暗自「以王志弘風格為師」的設計者 眾，畫虎畫皮難畫骨，最難辦到，大約也是這一點精髓了。 •

• 匠人之心

•

個人很主觀看法，王志弘其人，至少有兩點不可不說：先是他出生於 1975 年，成長於相 對寬容的 80、90 年代，服完兵役出社會時，電腦時代已然降臨，因緣際會，他等於是台 灣第一代可輕易運用數位工具的設計者，電腦讓他在工作時輕易跨越前輩所難以解決的問 題，相對快、穩、準，而能達到某種深度；網路則讓他無遠弗屆，國內外相關作品，搜尋 即得，用心觀摩學習，視野寬闊，則有前輩所無從擁有的廣度。 但更重要的，恐怕還是某種已逐漸失落的「匠人之心」。這一匠心，一方面表現在他的低 調，無論名氣有多大，他始終謹守專業本份， 「公私不分」，日以繼夜，汲汲深耕自己的設 計天地，進而策畫主持「 Insight 」跟「 Source 」書系，引介提倡平面設計藝術，創前人所 未有，餘者均不與。這種「離大眾遠一點，離專業近一點」的姿態，在眾聲喧嘩，人人求 「讚」的時代裡，毋寧是種異數，格外光亮耀眼。 另者，與他合作過的的編輯人都知道，王的完稿不容置喙，他完全不接受諸如「這邊高一 點，書名太小，留白太多」這樣的瑣碎意見。積漸以還，遂有「難搞」、「大牌」之說。事 實上，這一堅決態度，從他甫出道，還很「小牌」即如此。設計過程中，他也絕非不能「對 話」，更時時以「市場性」為設計重點。然而，某種「信任」與「尊重」卻是他所堅持的。這 種「不作調人，不容妥協」的態度，自然曾讓他喫了不少苦頭，但也因其「一路走來，始終 如一」，而獲得業界接受，某種程度上，竟無形提高了台灣裝幀設計者的地位。 「讓作品說話就好。」我所知道的王志弘，對於這本書，所持必然一貫低調態度。不說卻不 代表沒得說，他不說遂由我試著說說，至於準確與否，實非所逆睹。畢竟，關於「閱讀」 的一切，無非主觀，均屬個人意見耳。但做為一名普通讀者，我實應為王志弘近二十年來 為台灣讀者所帶來的某種幸福，向他深深致謝，一如向那些傑出優秀的作家一般。 傅月庵 書話作家，掃葉工房編輯人 2016 年 7 月，台北 • It is difficult to pinpoint when book binding and cover design first started, but probably after the “mechanical reproduction” of books became possible. In other words, after publishing became a profitable commercial activity and competition intensified publishing houses began to focus more on covers, format and the layout of pages inside

books to make their offerings more appealing. In this context, design began to play a more important role, one that differed markedly from the era when people were more superstitious and each brushstroke on the cover of the Bible or Buddhist scriptures was in gold or silver as a mark of reverence.

However, traditional Chinese block printing was limited to the printing process and never developed into “mass mechanical reproduction.” As a result, books published by trade publishers failed to achieve great popularity and invariably received reviews that fell well short of those for books commissioned by individuals or the government, with no interest in commercial publishing. In this situation there were few differences in the page layout, format or covers of thread-bound books which tended to be more or less uniform. In contrast, there has been little research into the wide range of different fonts used in books, a subject that with the availability of modern databases is ripe for further exploration.

The focus of this discussion is book binding and cover design, an area of commercial design which it is broadly accepted originated in the West.

In Taiwan, “modernization” can be dated from the period of Japanese colonial rule. As relative political stability took hold in the early part of the 20th century the more open minded cultural policies of the Meiji Restoration (1868) were gradually transplanted from Japan to colonial Taiwan. As a result, commercial publishing started to develop, though the sector was to begin with dependent on imports and publications from Tokyo or Shanghai were available across Taiwan, with “Shinkodo” in Taipei and “Lanji bookstore” in Chiayi important outlets for such “cultural trade.” Later, although initially focused on imitation local government and private sector publishing expanded. It is against this historical backdrop that individuals such as Tateishi Tetsuomi and Nishikawa Mitsuru began to focus on book cover design. However, while their works habitually included local Taiwanese elements they remained imbued with a strong Japanese flavor and lacked an independent character.

In 1949, the exiled Chinese Nationalist government relocated to Taiwan and soon thereafter imposed martial law. As a result, freedom of expression was ended and the local publishing industry, which had only just begun to flower under Japanese rule, was stopped in its tracks. The Chinese Nationalist Party and government controlled most publishers, strict provisions were enforced as to what could be published and a frequently updated list of “banned books” was issued. In such an environment, the publication of books was often a matter of luck with “cover design” not a major concern.

In the same way that people at the time referred to “martial arts readers” or “detective novel readers” contemporary publishers categorized those involved in book cover design somewhat disparagingly as “cover painters.”

1950s ─ 2000s •

In the 1950s and 1960s, Taiwan had such outstanding cover designers as Liao WeiLin, Yang Ying-Feng and Chen Chi-Kuan, though for most “drawing book covers” was something they did in their spare time and not considered “real” art. This “amateur”

mindset was very different to the professional focus of Japanese artists who worked on books like Takehisa Yumeji, Onchi Kōshirō, Hashiguchi Goyō etc. Nevertheless, the trend toward the simplification of “book binding and design” to “cover design” had a major influence on the development of publishing in Taiwan.

In the 1970s, the first post-war generation entered the workforce and rapid economic development gave those in power the confidence to adopt a slightly more relaxed publishing policy. That gave rise to “the first generation of post-war publishers” and an infusion of new blood into the industry which led to the rapid expansion of local publishing and the introduction of new innovations, including the increased importance of cover design. Perhaps the best known of the new cover designers was Huang HuaCheng, a talented and uninhibited artist who graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University and had a passion for book binding and design. Beginning with his editorial and design work at the magazine Theater, Huang exhibited exceptional talent at cover design, combining pictures, text and even font design. He was later mainly based at Vista Publishing, where he worked closely with photographer Chuang Ling. Their main visual focus was often household items, designing a series of book covers in a “pop art” style, which introduced readers to something original and boosted sales, leading to the first revolution in graphic design in Taiwan. Of particular note was the way in which Huang often got dressed up and played the central characters depicted on his covers making him a pioneer in the field, engaging in a practice that no one has since dared to emulate.

It was as a direct result of this genius designer who spent his life “searching for inspiration in the most unexpected of places” that book cover design in Taiwan entered a completely new era of development qualitatively and quantitatively. Henceforth, Chinese characters were no longer just characters; pictures were more than pictures and books were different. It was at this time that a new generation of graphic designers such as Liu Kai, Huo Jung-Ling, Lee Nan and many others made their names through the expressive platform of “book binding and design.”

It is hardly surprising that evolving culture and history were important factors in the book cover industry. Having outlined the development of the industry it is a little easier to understand the roots and cultural background of Wang Zhi-Hong, who rose to prominence after 2000 and has won six Golden Butterfly Awards (which in the past would have earned him automatic inclusion in government held exhibitions).

Wang’s book cover designs represent an extension of this “critical heritage” and “creative development.” They are well-executed, simple and powerful, fantastical and abstract, but most importantly always imbued with the artist’s highly original style. Many have commented on such works as being imbued with a “modern feel” and have searched for clues as to their origins in Eastern and Western cultures, only to discover that the roots of Wang’s creativity are distinctively Taiwanese. Indeed, both his enthusiastically received use of different languages and changeable use of fonts (said to be the first person to do this since Huang Hua-Cheng) reiterate this fact. As such, Wang Zhi-Hong’s success has been a matter of being in the right place at the right time, exposing him to Japanese, European-US and Chinese cultural influences. Add to those elements Wang’s

own thought process, his thirst for knowledge and all of these elements have resulted in a unique talent. For those designers who “model their own work on Wang’s style” it soon becomes apparent that while certain superficial elements can be copied the spirit of such designs is far harder to replicate.

SPIRIT OF THE ARTISAN •

•

There are two aspects to the success of Wang Zhi-Hong that any introduction absolutely must address. Having been born in 1975, Wang grew up in the relatively open era of the 1980s and 1990s, so when he completed his military service and started looking for a job computers were already widely used. That makes him part of the first generation of designers able to take advantage of digital tools. In addition, the use of computer assisted design also made it easier to overcome problems earlier generations of designers had found it difficult to address. It also ensured that Wang’s works were produced quickly, precisely and achieved greater consistency in terms of quality, while also facilitating greater depth. The advent of the Internet provided unfettered access to related materials from Taiwan and overseas, which allowed Wang to observe and learn from a broader body of work. That expanded his creative horizons and allowed him to develop a breadth of vision unimaginable to earlier generations.

Even more important is the fact that Wang Zhi-Hong embraces the “spirit of the artisan” in a way rarely seen these days. This is expressed in his low key approach to work and the fact that despite his renown in the industry Wang is always impeccably professional.

This is evident in the blending together of his work and private life, his round the clock work schedule and his tireless efforts to nurture new approaches to design, as seen by the “Insight” and “Source” series and his advocacy for graphic design art. These are qualities few earlier designers possessed and make Wang Zhi-Hong truly unique. Indeed, this professionalism and detachment from populism in an era when everyone is looking to be “liked” means Wang is unlike any other designer.

Editors who have worked with Wang are aware that there is little room for discussion over his finished works and that he does not accept piecemeal suggestions or suffer fools gladly, which has gained him a reputation for being “difficult to work with” and “arrogant.” However, this is an attitude he has had since first starting to design book covers. Moreover, Wang is always open to “dialogue” as part of the design process and invariably takes the “market” as a focal point. Having said that, he does expect a certain degree of “trust” and “respect” and his unwillingness to pander to others or compromise have caused difficulties. Nevertheless, his consistency has led to grudging professional acceptance and been instrumental in elevating the position of book cover design in Taiwan.

Wang Zhi-Hong believes his work should speak for itself and has remained customarily unassuming about this book. However, saying nothing is not the same as having nothing to say, so I write these words on Wang’s behalf though I cannot profess to know to what degree, if any, they represent his thoughts. Ultimately, “reading” is subjective, but as a reader I would like to take this opportunity to thank Wang Zhi-Hong for the joy he has

Fu Yueh-An Cultural Worker, Soyet Book Editor July 2016, Taipei • 装丁デザインの起源はいつだろうか。難しいが、おそらく書籍が複製技術時代に入って からであろう。つまり、出版が利益を見込む商業的行為になったとき、競争が激しくな り、書籍を「見せる」ための表紙や判型、寸法などに自然にこだわるようになり、デザ インというものが加わったのだろう。これは多くの人々が目に見えない神や霊を信じて いたころ、「拝礼」のため一筆一画、『聖書』や仏教の経典に金銀を施して装丁していた のとは自ずと意味が大きく違う。 中国の伝統的な木版は、その印刷手順に縛られ、機械による大量複製にはたどり着かな かった。「坊刻本」という商業目的のものはあったが流行らず、その評判は商売とはさら さら縁もない個人出版の「家刻本」やお役所の出す「官刻本」にはるかに及ばなかった。 この流れの中では、糸綴じの判型や規格、表紙にほとんど変化が見られず一様であった ことも頷ける。その代わり、まだ追求する人はほとんどないが、書籍によってそれぞれ特 徴ある字体は、コンピュータ時代の宝庫とも言え、解明と応用が大いに期待される。 いまから語る、商業デザインの一環としての書籍装丁デザインの起源は西洋にあり、純 然とした舶来であると言っても否定する人はほぼいないだろう。 歴史の運命ではあるが、台湾の近代化は日本統治時代に始まった。1900 年代に入ると、 政治が比較的安定するのに伴い、明治維新以降のさまざまな文明開化政策やその成果 が、徐々に日本の内地から植民地である台湾に広がり、商業出版も自ずと発展すること になった。当初は東京や上海の出版物などすべて輸入で、これがどんどん台湾に供給さ れた。台北の「新高堂」や嘉義「蘭記書局」はちょうどこの種の「文化貿易」を代表するだ ろう。その後、模倣から始まり、台湾における出版も官民を問わず徐々に自分の道を歩む ようになった。我々が夢中になる、書籍装丁デザインに身を投じた立石鐵臣や西川満と いった人々は、こういった歴史の流れの中で登場した。表現に台湾の要素を常に取り入 れてはいたものの、東洋趣味の色濃いスタイルがオリジナル性に欠けていたことはまた 自明でもあった。 1949 年、台湾の歴史的な運命はまた劇的に動く。国民政府が中国大陸から台湾に逃れて きたのだ。戒厳令下で言論の自由が完全に閉ざされ、日本統治時代にようやく萌芽した 台湾の出版は「発達の遅れた子ども」になってしまった。外来の党国体制（国民党と国家 が一体化した体制）資本は、出版社の多数を支配した。また検閲は極めて厳しく、いわゆ る「禁書」リストが不定期に公布された。こういった中では、出版にこぎつけられるだけ でも幸運であったが、「装丁デザイン」など望むべくもない。当時は好みの小説により人 を「武侠もの読み」、「探偵もの読み」などと呼び合ったものだった。出版業界で表紙デザ インを手掛ける人は「表紙描き」と呼ばれ、軽んじる意味合いもなくはなかった。 •

が王道とされた。これを「アルバイト的なもの」として見なす考えは、日本の竹久夢二、恩 地孝四郎、橋口五葉などが書物に全力を傾けた「功績」とは全く異なる。「装丁デザイン」 を簡単に「表紙デザイン」としてくくってしまう傾向は、さらにその後の台湾の出版の発 展に大きな影を落とした。 1970 年代に入り、台湾では戦後のベビーブーマーが社会人となり、経済の急発展が為政 者に自信を与えたため、出版政策もやや大らかになった。これを受けて「戦後第一世代の 出版人」が登場、新たな人材が加わったことで、台湾の出版産業は急速に拡大し、古いも のの中に刺激が生まれ、表紙デザインも徐々に重要視されるようにいなっていった。中 でも黄華成は、いちばん注目され、開拓の功績ももっとも大きかった人物である。台湾師 範大学美術学科出身の黄は、多芸多才で、束縛されず自由に力量を発揮した。「善の小な るを以て為さざる（こと）勿かれ」の精神で、書籍の装丁デザインに打ち込んだ。同人誌の 『劇場』に始まり、表紙デザインから画像と文章の組み合わせ、フォントデザインまでを 手掛け、素晴らしい才能を発揮した。後に遠景出版社を本拠地に、荘靈を写真家のパート ナーとし、身の回りのものをメインビジュアルに、次々と「ポップアート」スタイルの表 紙を生み出し、書籍に対するイメージを一新、読者の購買欲をそそり、台湾のグラフィッ クデザインの歴史における大革命を起こした。役者の舞台登場においては、自分でメイ ンビジュアルの人物になりきるコスプレをするほどで、その大胆さと情熱は時代の最先 端を行った。それ以来、彼のような試みをする人間はまだ登場していない。 生涯を通じ「直感は意図的に生まれるものでなく、どこかから舞い降りてくる」と強調し ていた天才デザイナーが時代を駆け抜けたことで、台湾の書籍装丁は、質の上でも量の 上でも新たな段階に足を踏み入れた。これ以降、字は単なる文字でなく、画像はたんなる 画像でなくなり、書籍も単なる書籍ではなくなったのだ。劉開、霍榮齡、李男といった新 しい世代のグラフィックデザイナーが次々登場したが、多くが「書籍装丁デザイン」を主 な舞台に広くその名を知られるようになった。 文化の積み重ねは遺伝子として自ずと受け継がれる。人は歴史からの影響を断ち切るこ とはできないのだ。ここまでの流れを通じ、もしかすると 2000 年以降に頭角を現した王 志弘を、第 6 回「ゴールデン・バタフライ・アワード（金蝶奨）」 （かつての美術賞に重ね 合わせると「永久一次審査免除」である）に輝いたこのデザイナーの根っことのつながり や、何に育まれたかの所以を理解することができるかも知れない。 王の作品は、「批判的な継承」もあれば、「創造的な発展」もある。飾らない中にキレがあ り、簡潔な中にもパワーがある。抽象に昇華していく中で独自のスタイルを確立した。多 くの人は「現代的」と讃え、東洋と西洋の作品から受け継がれた手がかりを模索するが、 その根っこは究極、「台湾生まれ」の結集なのである。王が何よりも楽しむのは、さまざ まな文字やフォントの変化と応用であり（黄華成以来と言える）、明らかにこれを説明し ている。ちょうどこのときこの場所に生まれ、日本や欧米、中国の文化的因子を形もなく 受け継ぎ、加えて自分の思索を磨き、常に学ぶことではじめてこの成果を生み出したの だ。ひそかに「王志弘スタイルを師と仰ぐ」デザイナーたちは、表面的には真似できても その魂までを模倣するのは難しく、つまりは真髄を表現するのが一番難しいのである。 •

私なりの主観的な見方であるが、王志弘という人を語るには、二つ言っておかねばなら ないことがある。まず、生まれが 1975 年、成長したのが比較的社会が開けた 1980 年代∼

1990 年代で、兵役を終えて社会に出るとパソコンの時代がもう来ていたということであ る。このような境遇から、王は台湾で軽々とデジタルツールを操るデザイナーの最初の 世代となった。パソコンは先人たちが解決に手こずった仕事上の問題を軽々と克服し、 より速く、より安定的、より精確に、また奥行きも実現できる。インターネットはまさに ユビキタスに、内外のさまざまな作品に手が届くようになり、一生懸命学んだり、参考に たり、視野を広げたりすることを可能にし、先人たちには持ちえなかった広がりを与え てくれた。 さらに重要なのは、おそらくある意味失われつつある「職人の心」である。この心は、王 の控えめな態度に出ている。どんなに高い評判を得ても、常にプロとしての本分を守り、 公私を分けず、昼夜を問わず、自分のデザインの世界を掘り下げる手を緩めず、さらには 「 Insight 」や「 Source 」といった書籍シリーズを主宰し、グラフィックデザインという芸 術を提唱、紹介し、他の人にはまねのできないことに取り組んでいる。「大衆」と距離を 置き、「プロ」に寄り添う心構えは、人々が大きな声で語り、こぞって「いいね！」を求め る時代においては、むしろ風変りで、異彩を放つ。 さらに、一緒に仕事をしたことのある編集者なら承知しているだろうが、王の完成稿に は簡単に手を付けられない。例えば「ここをちょっと高めに、タイトルが小さすぎ、余白 が多すぎ」などといった細々した異論はまったく受け付けない。いつのころからか、「や りにくい」とか「大物」とも言われるようになっている。実は、このきっぱりとした態度 は、世に出始めたとき、「小物」だったときからのものである。デザインのプロセスでは 決して「対話」できないのではないし、時には「マーケット性」をデザインのポイントと している。しかし、「信頼」と「尊重」こそが彼がこだわるものである。「人を喜ばすため だけに妥協しない」という態度から、自ずと苦労したことも少なくなかっただろう。しか し「一筋に、一貫した道をゆく」という彼の態度こそ、業界から受け入れられ、ある程度、 台湾の装丁デザインの地位を見えない形で持ち上げているのでもある。 「作品に語らせればそれでいい」 。私の知っている王志弘はこの本についても、一貫して 控えめである。語らないということは語ってはいけないということでもあるまい。王が 語らなければ私が語ろう。それが精確であるかどうかは私には予測できぬ。それに、「読 書」にまつわるすべて、主観とは切り離せない個人的な見方であろう。ただし、私も一介 の読者として、王志弘がこの 20 年近く台湾の読書家にもたらしたある種の幸せに対し、 優秀な作家に向けるのと同様に、心から感謝すべきではないだろうか。 傅月庵 書話作家、掃葉工房編集者 2016 年 7 月、台北

Moreover, from an historical perspective deliberately juxtaposing “Asian design” and Western design has no absolute value. It is against this backdrop that the possibilities inherent in a refreshingly new and youthful approach first became apparent in the early years of the New Millennium, most notably with the appearance of a young man from Taiwan called Wang Zhi-Hong. Wang made his presence felt in the world of book cover design in 2001, crafting a brand new design style that blended classicism and modernism with a distinctive focus on typography.

It has been Wang’s ability to reference and boldly combine elements from Taiwanese,

Chinese, Japanese and Western cultures in his work, often in great detail, that has been so appealing and become a defining characteristic of his design style. Whether we look at the way in which Wang references history and culture or his focus on technical details, he has proved particularly adept at both, as evidenced by his array of impressive book covers. Although there are often only subtle differences between the norms and types of Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese characters, Wang has still been able to flexibly put them to a wide range of applications. In this context, his methodology has transcended technique and aesthetics while establishing a direct link to the cultural character of East Asia. Wang Zhi-Hong’s bricolage design can be likened to the way in which Ming typeface modern moveable type printing technology arrived in Japan. The Japanese first took the typeface of Chinese wood block printing and then after replication using metal movable type from Europe and with the assistance of a printing company opened

by Americans in Shanghai introduced the typeface in Japan, after making their own refinements. In other words, although on the surface the change may appear to have been relatively simple, it had lasting international and historical implications.

At times of major change such as these, creativity often contains the seeds of opportunity that give rise to the developments that define the next era. Wang ZhiHong’s designs make full use of the information technology that is integral to modern globalization. As such, they are imbued with the power of internationalism and showcase the wisdom of modern Asia. Wang has used Asian perception to drive his deconstruction of modern typography, with his inspiration and ideas containing their own power to perhaps facilitate new movement and exchange in the world of Chinese characters. If design circles in East Asia accept and embrace Wang’s creativity then we can expect to see major changes in the not too distant future.

不知道台灣的出版品從哪時開始建立起這樣的習慣：設計師時常會將名字標註在折口，所 以當時的我也不例外，同樣在折口的一角留下屬於自己的記號：Design by wangzhihong. com。我始終很少留下真實姓名，過去的記號雖然並非每次都相同，也隨著時間推移或心 情而改變，但大致上不脫離這樣的寫法太遠。最後 Design by wangzhihong.com 成為我個 人留給他人的唯一印象，它被遺留在折口的一角，成為書的一部分。 這本作品集主要分成兩個部分：Design by wangzhihong.com 是圖錄的部分，收錄我從 2001 年至 2016 年中的部分作品，而 Text by wangzhihong.com 則是我針對其中 100 本 書，以隨筆的形式記錄下當時的一些想法。書中無論是圖錄或隨筆，內容完全是依照年份 去安排的，早期作品現在看來或許顯得生澀，但讀者更可以從這樣的選錄安排中，完整瀏 覽一位設計師的發展歷程或改變，其中包含了出版環境不同時期的轉變，以及我在出版設 計上的各種試探與衝撞的成果。 •

In the 1990s, many people were eager to work for advertising companies with their plethora of commercial images to play with but I found that unappealing and so decided to focus on typography. As a professional field that had been largely overlooked in Taiwan typography offered opportunities for future growth as well as the potential to ensure the more balanced development of graphic design. Ultimately, I launched my graphic design career by establishing a studio that focused on the unfashionable area of book cover design.

I did not really choose a career in book design. My initial thinking was more about finding a lifestyle and job that afforded me as much freedom as possible. However, as I look back I have now been involved with the publishing industry for the past 20 years.

Whether working for bookstores, my involvement with architecture and interior design magazines or later more popular publications, publishing has played an important role in my life. Although as a graphic designer I have taken on a wide range of projects, it is the design of book covers that has allowed me to hone my skills and map out a professional direction. Even more important, this field has enabled me to develop and showcase my own distinctive approach to design.

In 2008, recognizing the dearth of design and art related books in Taiwan I proposed a brand new method of cooperation to a publisher, whereby I would play a more active role in the publishing process in my capacity as a designer, from the selection of books to marketing and design. This involved utilizing the existing resources and experience of the publishing house to help me complete projects that came as close to realizing my ideal as possible. As a result, over the past nine years we have introduced many designers and artists who had not previously published books in Taiwan, including Araki Nobuyoshi, Sato Kashiwa, Satoh Taku, Yokoo Tadanori, Nakahira Takuma, Nagashima Yurie, Ohtake Shinro, Kawakubo Rei etc. Indeed, this arrangement continues to provide the Taiwanese public with a diverse range of excellent choices to enjoy and I too have grown from learning more about such talented individuals.

I am not sure when cover designers in Taiwan adopted the habit of including their own names in the corner of book covers, but I did likewise, always printing “Design by wangzhihong.com.” Although I rarely left just my full name and the marking was not always the same, changing over time or sometimes on impulse, it remained more or less the same. Ultimately, “Design by wangzhihong.com” became the impression I made on others and leaving it on the cover made it part of the book.

This collection of works is made up of two main parts: “Design by wangzhihong.com” brings together a selection of my works from 2001–2016 in a catalogue format, whereas those showcased under the title “Text by wangzhihong.com” discuss the thought process behind individual projects in more detail. Whether a catalogue entry or informal essay the pieces are organized chronologically and although some of the earlier works are a little rough and ready, this selection offers readers an introduction to my development as a professional designer. This includes different approaches and ideas that have

informed the publishing environment in Taiwan, including the various experiments and explorations I have engaged in over the years.

Since the turn of the New Millennium, graphic design has undergone major changes in Taiwan with typography embracing a period of unprecedented expressiveness. As a result, book cover design has developed from a profession in which few people were interested into an intensely competitive field with many talented designers. In addition, it has also become one of the main points of entry for foreigners to understand the nature of Taiwanese graphic design, developments that were inconceivable when I first started designing in the late 1990s. I very much hope that this comprehensive and detailed record of the period proves informative and instructive for those seeking to better understand the increasingly popular field of book cover design in Taiwan.

1990 年代、コマーシャルフィルムにあふれる広告会社が素晴らしいと多くの人が考えて いたころ、僕が目指す路線は全く違うものだった。だからその対極にある「タイポグラ フィー」の道を歩むことにした。これこそ台湾に足りないものだと強く思っていたので、 一生懸命にこれを支え、グラフィックデザインをよりバランスのとれた道にいざなう ことができればと考えた。その結果、最も注目されていなかった書籍デザインからグラ フィックデザインに切り込み、個人スタジオを立ち上げたのだった。 ただ、僕は意図的にこの分野に足を踏み入れたわけでもない。当初はどうしたら自由に 暮らし、仕事ができるだろうかと考えただけだった。でも振り返ってみればこの 20 年、 出版とは切っても切れない縁にある。最初の書店や建築雑誌、さらにマスメディアの出 版物など、出版はいつも僕の中で大きな割合を占めている。グラフィックデザイナーと していろいろな分野の仕事を引き受けてはいるが、書籍デザインで技術を磨き、方向性 を探し当てたと言っても過言ではない。さらに、その中で自分なりのデザイン観という ものを徐々に養ってきたのであり、それを多くの人に届けてきたということが最も重要

なのだ。 デザインやアートに関する書籍が不足していたことから、僕は 2008 年に斬新なプロ ジェクトを出版社に提案した。僕がデザイナーとして出版のプロセスに関わり、選書か らマーケティング、デザインまで手掛けるというものだ。出版社の持つリソースやノウ ハウを活かすことで、より理想的な出版というものを実現することができた。9 年間に わたって、荒木経惟や佐藤可士和、佐藤卓、横尾忠則、中平卓馬、長島有里枝、大竹伸朗、 川久保玲など、これまで台湾で出版されてこなかったデザイナーやアーティストの著作 を扱った。このプロジェクトはより多くの、またより良き選択肢を人々に提供し続け、そ のプロセスにおいて僕も読者とともに成長してきた。 •

台湾の出版物はいつのころからか、デザイナーの名前を折り返したソデに記すように なった。僕も同じように、折り返したソデの隅っこに自分の記号である「 Design by wang zhihong.com 」を記し、自分の本名を残すことはほとんどない。時の流れや気持ちの変 化に伴い、毎回まったく同じものでもないがほぼこういう書き方をしている。最終的に 「 Design by wangzhihong.com 」が人に認められる唯一の痕跡として、ソデの隅っこに 残ったまま本の一部となっている。 こ の 本 は、2001 年 か ら 2016 年 に 手 掛 け た 作 品 の 一 部 を 収 録 し た 画 像「 Design by wangzhihong.com 」と、エッセイとして 100 点の書籍を手掛けたときのことを記したテ キスト「 Text by wangzhihong.com 」の二つに分かれている。画像であれ随筆であれ、す べて年代順に並べられている。初期の作品にはぎこちなさがあるかも知れないが、この ように作品を並べると、1 人のデザイナーの歩んだ道のりと変化をじっくり見ることが できる。中には出版環境が変わったことによる変化や、書籍デザインに僕が試みた手探 りのチャレンジや壁にぶつかったときの成果も表れている。 •

2000 年以降の台湾では、グラフィックデザインに大きな変化が生まれた。タイポグラ フィーもこれまでにない盛り上がりを見せ、誰も見向きもしなかった書籍デザインの分 野も今やたくさんのデザイナーが押し寄せるコロシアムとなり、海外の人々が台湾のグ ラフィックデザインを理解する表玄関ともなっている。90 年代末の僕にはとても想像 できなかったことばかりだ。そしてこの作品集がいまの段階において、価値ある記録の 一つとなることを心から願っている。 王志弘 デザイナー、書籍シリーズ「 Source 」キュレーション 2016 年 7 月、台北

王志弘，台灣平面設計師，國際平面設計聯盟（ AGI ）會員。1975 年生於台北，1995 年私立復興高級商工職 業學校畢業。2000 年成立個人工作室，承接包含出版、藝術、建築、電影、音樂等領域各式平面設計專案。 2008 與 2012 年，先後與出版社合作設立 Insight、Source 書系，以設計、藝術為主題，引介如荒木經惟（ Araki Nobuyoshi ）、佐藤卓（ Satoh Taku ）、橫尾忠則（ Yokoo Tadanori ）、中平卓馬（ Nakahira Takuma ）與川久保玲 （ Kawakubo Rei ）等相關之作品。作品六度獲台北國際書展金蝶獎之金獎、香港 HKDA 葛西薰（ Kaoru Kasai ）評 審獎與銀獎、韓國坡州出版美術賞（ Paju Book Award ），東京 TDC 入選。著有《 Design by wangzhihong.com: A Selection of Book Designs, 2001–2016 》。 • Wang Zhi-Hong, a leading graphic designer based in Taiwan and a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) since 2015. Born in 1975 in Taipei. Graduated from Fu-Hsin Trade and Art School in 1995.

Started his studio in 2000 and offering design solutions in fields of publication, art, architecture, film and music. Since 2008 he has been collaborating with trade publishers in launching his imprints, Insight and Source, featuring translated titles on art and design, such as the works by Araki Nobuyoshi, Satoh Taku, Yokoo Tadanori, Nakahira Takuma and Kawakubo Rei. A six-time winner of Golden Butterfly Awards, Taiwan’s highest honor for excellence in book design, he has received numerous international recognitions, including Kaoru Kasai’s Choice Award and Silver Award from HKDA Global Design Awards, Best Book Design from South Korea’s Paju Book Award, as well as Excellent Works from Tokyo Type Directors Club Annual Awards. He is also the author of Design by wangzhihong.com: A Selection of Book Designs, 2001–2016.
