WELCOME THANKS FOR JOINING US FOR SOUL SURVIVOR 2018 – IT’S WONDERFUL TO BE HERE IN PETERBOROUGH WITH YOU! We love hanging out with you and can’t wait to see what God wants to do over these five days together. If this is your first time at Soul Survivor then a particularly warm welcome to you – we hope you feel at home really quickly. We’ve got loads lined up for this week with seminars covering key areas such as anxiety, women in leadership, relationships, social media, overcoming obstacles in our lives, following God’s plan for our lives and leadership. Check out the day planner so you don’t miss a thing! Plus there are great venues including The Basement which will be home to our UV party, silent disco and will have Guvna B performing; Café Uno which will have live music each evening; and the ToolShed which is packed with great resources. Plus there’s an opportunity to show us your talents on the Bandstand, you can play sports, watch films, join us for Late Night Worship, or hang out in one of our cafes. On night 4 we’ll have a bonfire after the main meeting with live music so we can all hang out together and on night 5 we’ll be finishing the week by having a sing-along to The Greatest Showman! We like to pack lots of fun stuff into the programme but the thing we’re most excited about is seeing what God wants to do. He never ceases to amaze us with the ways he meets us in his love, kindness, grace and mercy. We want to make loads of space in our main meetings to encounter him in intimate ways through worship, to hear what he wants to say to us through his word, and to invite the Holy Spirit to meet with us in whatever way he chooses. That’s why we’re here so let’s make the most of the time we have together this week to seek him and to enjoy hanging out with one another. Our prayer is that you leave here knowing God better, knowing more of his love for you, and more aware of his presence in your life as you go home and continue to follow him. With love, Mike

ABOUT US SOUL SURVIVOR BEGAN WITH ONE EVENT FOR 1896 PEOPLE IN SOMERSET IN THE SUMMER OF 1993. MIKE PILAVACHI WAS THE YOUTH WORKER AT ST ANDREW’S CHURCH IN CHORLEYWOOD, HERTFORDSHIRE AT THE TIME AND HE’D HAD THE VISION TO START SOMETHING SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE. It turned out that lots of people liked the idea and so the events grew and grew until now there are four of them taking place in Scotland, Stafford and Peterborough each summer. We also run a six-day event for the whole church called Naturally Supernatural which is all about living a Spirit-led life, and other events during the

year. You can find out what’s coming up this year on page 83. Got more questions about Soul Survivor? Pop to our stand in the ToolShed and ask away!

MAIN MEETINGS Day 1: 7pm Days 2-4: 11am and 7pm Day 5: 10am (for communion) and 7pm

OUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE WEEK IS WHEN WE ALL GATHER TOGETHER MORNING AND EVENING TO WORSHIP GOD THROUGH SONG, HEAR TEACHING FROM THE BIBLE AND TO PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER. We want to leave these times open to what God wants to do and to follow his lead. That means although we’re likely to have a time of worship, followed by a talk, and then by prayer ministry, that’s all flexible. Whatever happens, Mike will talk you through what’s going on!

PRAYER MINISTRY

WORSHIP Worshipping God is at the very heart of what it means to be a Christian so it’s at the very heart of all we do here at Soul Survivor. Jesus said that the most important thing we can do is to love God with all our heart, soul and mind. There are many ways to express that love, but when we gather together one of the key ways is to sing songs of praise. This is an amazing opportunity to be intimate with our Creator, to tell him we love him, and to know more of his love for us.

We want to live in God’s power rather than our own strength so we make plenty of space to ask him to fill us with his Holy Spirit in our meetings. Anyone who is a Christian has the Holy Spirit living in them but this is a time of asking for an increased sense of his presence to equip, empower, heal, challenge and change us; to give us his gifts and give us a greater understanding of who he is. If you’ve not been around prayer times like this before, there’s nothing to worry about! We’re not going to hype anything up or start acting weird and Mike will keep chatting through what’s happening.

RELEVANT TEACHING The Bible is absolutely packed with amazing truth about who God is, how much he loves us and how we should follow him. Getting to know the Bible is the best way to get to know who God is, how he feels about us and how he wants us to live our lives. We know that it can sometimes be hard to know where to start with such a big book and difficult to understand how to apply what was said thousands of years ago to our lives today. So in each of our main meetings one of our speakers will be helping us take a look at God’s word and what God is saying through it. If you’ve not heard a Soul Survivor talk before you’ll soon see that we’re pretty informal and like to have a laugh as well as be challenged by what we’re hearing. We don’t take ourselves very seriously but we do take God seriously!

COMMUNION DAY 5: 10am On our last morning together we take some time to celebrate all that God has done during the week and to remember what Jesus sacrificed for us on the cross by taking communion together. Directions will be given during the meeting as to when to go to take the bread and wine, plus gluten-free bread and non-alcoholic wine will be available for those who prefer. If your tradition is to take Catholic Mass this will be available in Café Uno, with instructions given during the main meeting as to when to head there.

BIG TOP AT WEEK B We’ve got two venues for our main meetings in order to accommodate everyone this week. The worship and talk will be linked into the Big Top which will be hosted and have ministry. You can choose which venue you’d like to be in as long as there is capacity so if you have a strong preference do head in early to get your favourite spot! If you find the main meetings a bit overwhelming and would like to access the worship and teaching in a quieter venue, Café Uno will be open for you to watch and listen in there.

WE’VE PACKED OUT THE TOOLSHED WITH A BUNCH OF RESOURCES WE THINK YOU’LL FIND REALLY HELPFUL IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS. We’ve invited some charities to come and exhibit too, to tell you a bit more about what they do to further God’s kingdom and how you can get involved. They may also be selling items that generate funds for their charitable trust. The ToolShed is home to the Soul Survivor Stand where you’ll find loads of great books and CDs plus our brand new t-shirts, hoodies and goodies – we hope you like them! You can also find out more about our gap year programme at the Soul61 stand.

Please keep in mind that the ToolShed should be a relaxed place for you to browse and enjoy - please don’t feel pressured to spend any money. If any of the exhibitors get a bit over-zealous and make you feel uncomfortable, just pop into Info and let us know. We don’t mean to get all soppy on you but you’re pretty special and we don’t want you to feel like anyone is just trying to sell to you or getting angry with you if you don’t agree with their theological take on things. While we’re talking about this stuff, if Mike or Ali mention anything from stage or on social media about any books or music they think you’ll like, they really do mean they think you’ll like it; they’re not getting paid to tell you about it!

LIFELINES: £8 MIKE AND ANDY’S NEW BOOK IS HERE! LIFELINES LOOKS AT WHAT WE CAN LEARN ABOUT HOW TO DO EVERYDAY LIFE THROUGH THE SUCCESSES, FAILURES AND STRUGGLES OF SOME OF THE MOST FAMOUS BIBLE CHARACTERS. For example, how can Ruth’s story help us when we’re wrestling with a relationship issue? What might Joseph say if we told him about our concerns for the future? How might David’s example help us when we’re feeling fearful? This book helps us walk beside men and women who, thousands of years ago, blazed a trail for us to follow, in order to learn how to live lives of faith and integrity today.

DAY PLANNER WE’VE PLANNED SOME GREAT SEMINARS THIS WEEK TO HELP US EXPLORE DIFFERENT AREAS OF OUR FAITH AND GO DEEPER IN OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. The next few pages will help you to plan your days so have a browse to find out who will be speaking and what they will be talking about. Seminars last for around 45 minutes except our Bite Size stream which features new speakers whose talks will last for 15 minutes. If you miss any, or there are two on at once that you’d like to hear, there’s no need to worry! You’ll be able to stream each talk on our website after the summer and each talk has a code next to it to help you find it online. If you’re keen to get your hands on the lot, you can grab a Soul Survivor USB stick from the Soul Survivor stand in the ToolShed. As an added bonus for buying this programme we’ve given you a cheeky little discount voucher towards an ‘All The Talks’ USB stick when you pre-order on site!

YOUTH LEADERS! We’ve got a couple of SoulNet seminars just for you! Join us at 9am for free coffee and breakfast before the seminar begins at 9.30am.

SOULNET: STAYING CONNECTED TO GOD AS A YOUTH LEADER

THE WHOLE NEW TESTAMENT IN 45 MINUTES

Chris Curtis and Rachel Gardner What tools and techniques can we put in place as leaders to make sure that we don’t become so focused on leading others that we forget to look after our own discipleship? As part of this, we’ll also address the issue of the lure of the platform, ego and making sure our motivations are right. Café Uno, 18B001

THE WHOLE OLD TESTAMENT IN 45 MINUTES

Chris Lane Chris will be taking us on a whistle stop tour of each book in the Old Testament in just 45 minutes. He’ll give us the low down on Genesis to Malachi and everything in-between, and show us how the great story of the Old Testament points to Jesus. Big Top, 18B002

PRAYER MINISTRY 101

Ali Martin Want to find out more about how to pray for people and be part of what God wants to do during a ministry time? There’s no secret formula but Ali will share some helpful, practical tips about how to pray, what you might expect to see happen in the main meetings, and how you can get involved in seeing God meet with people. DOES GOD EVEN LIKE ME?

James Grier The Bible talks about God’s love for us but do you ever worry that God only really loves you because he has to? That he doesn’t have any choice because he’s God? Many of us aren’t truly convinced that God likes us very much so this seminar will look at those struggles in our relationship with God and with how we view ourselves. The Village Screen, 18B006

THE GIRL DE-CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

Rachel Gardner Culture is giving us an increasingly narrow view of what it means to be female. Lies and false goals are everywhere leaving many girls with a deep sense of shame about not being ‘enough’. This seminar will de-construct three lies and false expectations of what it means to be female and will re-construct three truths and godly goals for being a girl who is confident and loved by God. Freddie Pimm Life is stressful! With exams, relationships, coursework and family tensions, it’s so easy to feel overwhelmed by everyday situations. In this talk Freddie will consider what it really means to find rest in God, and how to deal with both success and failure. Village Screen, 18B011

EVANGELISM MADE A BIT LESS SCARY

Jason Gardner Is the idea of telling your friends about your faith as appealing as doing a bungee jump into a pool of piranhas? Then this seminar is for you! We’ll be looking at the big reasons why we don’t do evangelism as well as all the reasons why sharing your faith can be fun, thrilling and will hugely grow you as a disciple of Jesus. Also if you feel God’s nudging you to be an evangelist come along and get some great ideas! Breakout, 18B012

SOULNET: STAYING INNOVATIVE AS A YOUTH LEADER

Chris Curtis and Rachel Gardner How can we think creatively about every aspect of our youth ministry, making sure we’re really meeting the needs of a rapidly-changing culture? Chris and Rachel will take us through the Youthscape innovation process, a brilliant tool you can pick up and run with straight away. Café Uno, 18B013

JESUS LOVES THANOS

Jason Gardner Yes, even mad, purple, Titan, megalomaniac, reality-altering, moon-munching arch villains aren’t beyond the love of God! But what does the story of Avengers: Infinity War, one of the biggest box office successes of all time, tell us about faith in today’s world? Why are we obsessed with stories about gods, heroes, and demons wielding ultimate power? What would you do if you had an infinity gauntlet? All these questions and more will be answered at a click of the fingers. Big Top, 18B014

Social media is a wonderful servant, but a terrible master: so come and discover how to take control of your social media use before it takes control of you. Café Uno, 18B016

HANDS ARE MADE FOR WORKING Guvna B After a career full of highs, Guvna B was knocked sideways last year when he lost his dad very suddenly. As he tried to come to terms with his loss, he found a sentence his dad would often say, come back to comfort him, ‘Hands are made for working.’ Drawing on his experience, this seminar will look at themes of fatherlessness, grief, youth culture and faith. This is going to be a biblical and practical seminar about ways we can ensure that we keep God at the centre and listen to his voice as we navigate the BIG moments in life. Big Top, 18B022

SOULNET STAYING CONNECTED TO GOD AS A YOUTH LEADER

Rachel Gardner and Martin Saunders What tools and techniques can we put in place as leaders to make sure that we don’t become so focused on leading others that we forget to look after our own discipleship? As part of this, we’ll also address the issue of the lure of the platform, ego and making sure our motivations are right. Café Uno, 18C001

WHAT IS IT TO BE A CHRISTIAN?

Ruth Williams What does it mean to be a Christian? What the heck have I signed up to? What is expected of me as a Christian? Whether you’ve been a Christian for 10 years, 10 days or 10 minutes, together we will explore what it means to live an exciting, authentic Christian life and look at how we can do this adventure together. Big Top, 18C002

RECKLESS

John Williams Society tells us to “Be careful” and “Don’t take unnecessary risks” but God doesn’t seem to operate that way as there’s a reckless nature to his Gospel. Join John as he looks at the risky side of God’s love and what that means as we share the gospel with the world. The Village Screen, 18C003

GOD’S PERFECT WORSHIP SONG

Minu Chowdhury-Westlake and David Westlake We are blessed with amazing and powerful worship songs to sing to our God, songs that imagine a better world. But what are we promising him as we sing? The Bible tells us to worship and it also tells us how. Come along to look at what it means to worship God in every part of our lives and how we’re called to bring the kingdom we sing about into our everyday world. Breakout, 18C004

2.30PM - 3.15PM

JESUS LOVES THANOS

Jason Gardner Yes, even mad, purple, Titan, megalomaniac, reality-altering, moon-munching arch villains aren’t beyond the love of God! But what does the story of Avengers: Infinity War, one of the biggest box office successes of all time, tell us about faith in today’s world? Why are we obsessed with stories about gods, heroes, and demons wielding ultimate power? What would you do if you had an infinity gauntlet? All these questions and more will be answered at a click of the fingers. Café Uno, 18C005

WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP - THE BIBLICAL OVERVIEW

Ali Martin and David Westlake What does the Bible have to say about women, calling, purpose, and leadership? We’ll take a look at the Bible as a whole to help us understand the place of women in leadership with a particular focus on creation, salvation and the life of Jesus. Big Top, 18C006

HOW CAN I FOLLOW GOD’S PLAN FOR MY LIFE? Freddie Pimm If God has a plan and a purpose for each of us how can we know what that plan is and how can we follow it effectively? Freddie will give some insights and tips into grasping God’s plan for our lives and being obedient in our faith. The Village Screen, 18C007

WAITING, DATING, MATING

Ness Wilson Ness will be looking at some key questions like: When we are waiting for a relationship, how do we make sure our season of singleness isn’t wasted? Can our season of singleness be used to help save our future marriages before they even begin?! If we stay single and never start a relationship, can we experience contentment, even fulfilment? When we are dating, how can we date well? When we’ve found a mate for life, how do we become the best husband or wife we can be? Breakout, 18C008

WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP - THE TRICKY PASSAGES

Ali Martin and David Westlake There are a number of passages in the Bible that, on first read, seem to say that women can’t lead. We’ll take a deeper look at these to understand what the writers meant, and hold the teaching up to the bigger picture of the Bible to set it into context. In this session Ali and David will also look at how the issue of women in leadership is worked out pastorally and practically. Big Top, 18C011

HOW CAN I FIND THE PEACE OF GOD?

IN AN EMERGENCY

WIFI

Please DON’T call emergency services yourself as this can delay help getting to the right place. Instead give Comms a ring on 0300 302 0330 and they will swing into action on your behalf. (Alternatively you can pop in to Info if you’re nearby or ask any member of team that has a radio to contact Comms for you.)

There’s limited free wifi on the showground and you don’t need a password to access it. Sorry if it gets a bit slow at times with so many of us using it.

PHONE CHARGING Battery running low? We’ve got some handy USB charging points in our cafes so you can recharge while enjoying a hot chocolate mountain. Charging is free but please don’t leave your phone unattended in case someone else takes a shine to it.

WRISTBANDS Your wristband is your ticket into all the venues on site! Keep it safely around your wrist at all times (it’s designed to withstand most things including going in the shower with you!) and show it to the stewards at the door of each venue so they know you’re legit. If you do manage to break your wristband please pop along to Info with the pieces and we’ll print you a new one for £1. If you lose it altogether that would be a very sad day as you’ll need to pay £40 for a replacement. It’s very important that everyone wears the correct wristband so they can be identified in case of an emergency so please don’t swap wristbands with anyone else. If for any reason you have the wrong one, please pop to Info and we’ll sort that out for you.

RECYCLING Help out the recycling team onsite by using the recycling points all around the site for glass, plastic, cardboard and cans. There are recycling bags at each village waste point that you can take back to your camp.

If you brought one with you then you head straight to the top of the class! You can refill it at any of our cafes plus there are taps on all the villages. If you don’t have one, now could be a great time to invest by heading to our stand. Limiting plastic bottle waste will make us (and David Attenborough) very happy. Thanks!

REUSEABLE COFFEE CUPS You can purchase reusable coffee cups in our cafes or you’re very welcome to bring your own and we’ll refill that for you.

THE OFFERING AS PART OF OUR WORSHIP WE TAKE UP AN OFFERING DURING THE MAIN MORNING MEETING ON DAY 4. ALL THE MONEY GIVEN WILL BE SPLIT EQUALLY BETWEEN YOUNG LEADERS, THE PERSECUTED CHURCH AND SOUL ACTION PROJECTS. Please don’t feel under any pressure to give but if you would like to, just follow the instructions given during the meeting. Gift Aid envelopes will be available for everyone who is lucky enough to pay tax so please fill one in and help us to claim an extra 25p for every pound that you give. Please make any cheques payable to Soul Survivor Limited.

PERSECUTED CHURCH Many of our Christian brothers and sisters around the world are persecuted for their faith. For some it is illegal to meet together or own a Bible and they can be heavily fined, arrested, imprisoned, tortured and even killed for their belief in Jesus. We work with church leaders in and around Central Asia to encourage and help equip believers following Jesus in the most difficult circumstances.

RAISING UP YOUNG LEADERS We are passionate about working with young people who love God and long to serve him and his church. Through our Soul61 trust we invest in future leaders, providing them with training, teaching and mentoring to develop their gifts.

SOUL ACTION We want all people to live in God’s freedom but know that slavery continues to exist and that many around the world do not have the educational opportunities that we have been blessed with. Money given towards Soul Action will enable us to make grants to organisations like Soul Action South Africa who are starting a school to help underprivileged children in some of the poorest parts of Durban. You can find out more about Soul Action on page 77.

ONE OF THE THINGS WE’RE REALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT AT SOUL SURVIVOR IS MEETING WITH GOD. DURING THE MAIN MEETINGS WE WILL ALWAYS TRY TO LET GOD LEAD WHAT’S GOING ON AND MAKE SPACE FOR HIM TO MEET WITH US. A GUIDE TO PRAYING FOR OTHERS…

As part of this Mike and Ali will make space for us to wait on the Holy Spirit and pray for groups of people they believe God particularly wants to meet with. This is a great opportunity for God to work in our lives and it’s brilliant to be as open to him as possible. Don’t worry if you’ve never been prayed for in this way, or if you’re not sure how to pray for others; Mike and Ali will talk you through what’s going on and some basics for praying. We also have an experienced enabling team who will be around to help you and answer your questions.

WHAT HAPPENS? Ministry times usually begin with an invitation from someone on the stage for people to wait on and respond to the Holy Spirit. The most important thing to remember is that this is God’s work, not ours. Try to stay open to what God might want to do in your life and invite him to speak to you. Everyone responds differently to meeting with God so try not to focus too much on your reaction or the reactions of those around you. We can experience God in all sorts of ways and physical manifestations aren’t the important thing. If you’d like to receive from God just stay focused on him. If you’d like to pray for other people, have a read on for some helpful tips.

SOUL SURVIVOR WEEKS B & C 2018 EVENT PROGRAMME

SS_2018_Programme_WeeksB&C(Revised).indd 68

When you’re praying remember that you are there to encourage those seeking God and to bless what the Holy Spirit is doing. There is no ‘right way’ to pray for each other but we’ve included these guidelines as they are tried and tested and tend to work quite well! While you’re with us please stick to the advice given. Lots of it is just straight-forward common sense! In general feel free to pray for anyone regardless of gender but please be aware that at times, when ministry is of a sensitive nature, we will ask that girls pray for girls and guys pray for guys. Don’t be afraid to ask someone what they would like you to pray for and what God is doing even if the Holy Spirit is moving powerfully on them (in Luke 18:40 Jesus asks the blind man ‘What do you want me to do for you?’). However, be aware of not turning this into a long conversation; you don’t need to offer advice and counselling but allow space for the Holy Spirit to do what he would like to do. If appropriate you can speak into the situation or condition in

Jesus’ name, but be sensitive and recognise that you may be wrong. If you have a prophetic word or picture, offer these as a prayer or in such a way that the person being prayed for can make their own decision as to how appropriate they are. Never insist that what you have to say is a word from God and always seek to strengthen, encourage and comfort the person you’re praying for (1 Corinthians 14:3). Encourage the person to receive from God and be still, rather than praying for themselves. Some people may show this attitude by opening their hands in front of them. The laying on of hands to pray is Biblical. We see Jesus touch a man to heal him of leprosy in Mark 1: 40-45 and he lays hands on the children to bless them in Matthew 19:13-15. That said, not everyone is comfortable with this so please be sensitive. Please also use common sense about where you place your hands so it doesn’t become distracting for the person you are praying for.

PRAYER MINISTRY GUIDELINES PAGE 69

SS_2018_Programme_WeeksB&C(Revised).indd 69

Keep your eyes open when you pray for someone. This means you are more aware of what God is doing and how the person is responding. It also means you can grab them some tissues if they start crying or be prepared if they look like they may fall over in the power of the Spirit. If someone does fall over in the power of the Holy Spirit then please make sure they are in a comfortable position, not draped over anyone else and that their dignity is maintained (i.e. nothing is on show that shouldn’t be). If you can, put a jumper or jacket under the person’s head. It is not always necessary to stay with them for the whole time but if you move away encourage them to keep receiving from God and keep an eye on them to check they are safe. It can be helpful to quietly let them know that you will return in a little while so they know that they are not forgotten. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and encouragement, and be prepared to wait; this is God’s work, not yours. The person you are praying for may tell you about things that have happened in their life but don’t appear to be shocked by any disclosures. Remember that confidentiality is of the utmost importance but DO NOT promise to keep anything secret, especially with regards to claims of abuse. Your first point of contact in such a situation should be a member of the enabling team. They are there to support you and the person you are praying with and will be able to take things further if necessary.

It’s very important to allow the expression of feelings and this might mean people cry, shake or respond in other ways to what God is doing. This is totally fine but be careful not to suppress or to build up the situation. Alternatively some people might not seem to respond physically at all. That’s fine too. We want God to do what he wants to do, we don’t want to get in the way of that and we want to make sure people leave a time of ministry feeling loved and valued. It’s brilliant to have more than one person praying for someone at a time so feel free to go over and join someone who’s praying already. That said, it can be distracting if a large group gather around someone when the ministry is of a sensitive nature so please ensure people have enough personal space. If at any time you feel out of your depth then please ask for help from the enabling team. We all find ourselves in situations that we can’t handle alone. This is not failure and it’s often good to pray with others, plus it’s a great way to learn more!

PRAYING FOR PHYSICAL HEALING When Jesus healed people in the Bible he spoke to the sickness and ailments and commanded them to be healed. Jesus gives us the power and authority to do the same in his name. So, for example, if you are praying for a sight problem, speak to the eye and tell it to ‘Be open and see in Jesus’ name’. If you’re praying for an ear, speak to the ear and tell it to be open and hear in the name of Jesus. When praying for injuries that cause pain or immobility ask the person what level of pain they have on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest pain possible). Speak to the condition in the name of Jesus and command it to be healed. Speak to the pain and tell it very firmly to ‘Stop it,’ in Jesus’ name (but remember you don’t need to shout!). If appropriate speak to the mobility of the joint or limb and tell it to be healed in Jesus’ name. After this short prayer ask the person to test for pain and mobility in the injured area. Ask for the number out of 10 of the level of pain and mobility to see if it has gone down. Repeat the prayer, if necessary, as many times as you are both comfortable with.

SS_2018_Programme_WeeksB&C(Revised).indd 70

AND FINALLY Not everyone is familiar with ministry and prayer times and some people feel a bit concerned or nervous when they become aware of God working through his Holy Spirit. We need to help people who are receiving feel comfortable and safe, and to encourage them to reach out to God. Always be sensitive and respectful, keeping in mind how you would like to be prayed for, and constantly asking for God’s help. Reassure those being prayed for that God has heard sincere prayers and the cries of our hearts and encourage them to expect answers. Speak healing, peace and release in the name of Jesus and remember the place of repentance, forgiveness and being forgiven. If someone would like extra prayer you can refer them to a member of the enabling team or to the Chat Room which is open every afternoon and evening. Encourage the person to receive as much prayer as they like during the event but also to seek ongoing ministry support from their home church. Don’t make any appointments to pray with people you don’t know outside of the meeting. All these are tips to help you let God work through you. Remember: don’t worry! The enabling team and the person leading the meeting will be giving directions and advice to everyone. The important thing is that you are ready and willing to pray for those around you.

EVER WONDERED WHY WE DO THE THINGS WE DO? HERE ARE SOME ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS WE MOST COMMONLY GET ASKED. IF THERE’S SOMETHING YOU’D LIKE TO KNOW THAT WE HAVEN’T ANSWERED, DROP US AN EMAIL AT INFO@SOULSURVIVOR.COM. WHY DO PEOPLE CLOSE THEIR EYES AND PUT THEIR HANDS UP IN WORSHIP? Many people close their eyes as it helps keep them from being distracted while they worship. Some raise their hands as a sign of praise (in Psalm 63 the psalmist says, ‘I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands’) and hold out their hands as a way of showing they are surrendering to God and want to receive from him. There is no right or wrong way to worship God and it doesn’t matter so much what we’re doing with our bodies, it’s more about what’s going on in our hearts. You may want to shout, dance and jump about, or you may want to be quiet and still. As long as you’re focussed on Jesus (and you’re not trampling on anyone else!) then that’s what counts.

WHY DO PEOPLE DO STRANGE THINGS WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT MOVES? When God’s Spirit rests on people during ministry times they may laugh, cry, move around or just be still. All of this is totally fine. Ministry times are about giving God space to meet with us however he wants and so the best thing we can do is be as open as possible to him and not worry about what anyone else is doing.

SOUL SURVIVOR WEEKS B & C 2018 EVENT PROGRAMME

SS_2018_Programme_WeeksB&C(Revised).indd 72

We don’t want to hype anything up or stop people from expressing themselves and so we try not to focus on people’s outward manifestations and focus instead on what God is doing in our hearts, minds and bodies. Mike will chat through what’s going on and if you have any questions about ministry times please do chat to someone on the enabling team, to your youth worker or to a member of the Chat Room team.

CAN I GET THE LYRICS/CHORD CHARTS TO THE SONGS WE’VE BEEN SINGING? Lots of these are available online for free, and some are in song books that you can buy. For any new songs written by our team we’ll post chord charts and lyrics as soon as we can after our summer events.

WHY IS MIKE SO MEAN TO PEOPLE ON STAGE?

WHY AREN’T THERE MORE SHOWERS?

One of Mike’s quirks is that he likes to tease his friends and that means he often makes cheeky remarks about them on stage. Please don’t be offended! Mike’s being affectionate rather than mean; we promise you he only ever teases someone who knows that he loves them.

We hire loads more showers than the number recommended for an event of this size in order to reduce your waiting time. Queues of course tend to be longer in the morning so you might want to shower in the afternoon/at night to save some time. We have a big team of cleaners who try and keep the showers and toilets clean for you but if you spot any problems just pop into Info and let us know.

WHY DO YOU CLOSE ALL THE OTHER VENUES WHEN THE MAIN MEETINGS ARE ON? The main meetings are the highlight of our time together so we close everything else so we can all come together to worship God, hear from his word and pray for one another. We also have lots of volunteers working in these venues so closing them twice a day gives them an opportunity to take some time off and come and meet with Jesus.

CAN I WORK FOR SOUL SURVIVOR? We’re a pretty small team, based in Watford, but we do occasionally have vacancies that we advertise on our website and on social media. Keep your eyes peeled! Every summer we need thousands of volunteers to make our events happen so if you’d like a peek behind the scenes, apply to be on team and get involved! All the info is on our website.

SOUL SURVIVOR Q&A PAGE 73

SS_2018_Programme_WeeksB&C(Revised).indd 73

WHY DOES SOUL SURVIVOR FUNDRAISE WHEN WE HAVE TO PAY TO BE HERE?

WHY DO WE HAVE TO SIT ON THE FLOOR? Whilst we’d love to all sit in luxurious seats, it would mean we could only get a fraction of the number of people in the main meetings. You’re welcome to bring a back support in with you but unfortunately, for health and safety reasons, we can’t allow pillows, fold up chairs or big cushions into the meetings. If you really need a chair there are a small number made available; chat to a steward if you can’t spot them.

We try and keep the costs down for you so Soul Survivor remains accessible to as many people as possible but that means the fees you pay don’t cover everything it costs us to make the events run. We couldn’t do what we do without the amazing people who support us financially – if you’d like to be one of them, find out more on page 61 or head to the ‘give’ section of our website.

WHY IS SOUL SURVIVOR FINISHING AFTER THE SUMMER OF 2019? We believe it’s time for us to step aside and allow new ministries to rise up. Head to our website to see a full statement and Q&A, plus a video message from Mike.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I GET HOME? HOW DO I SUSTAIN THIS HIGH? We hope you’ve had a brilliant time and are leaving Soul Survivor on a high, having met with God and had a great time with your mates. But we know that going home can present some challenges… As Christians we’re not immune to life’s ups and downs but through them all we want to keep deepening our relationship with God. Here are our top tips to help you grow in your faith:

READING YOUR BIBLE

KEEP IN TOUCH

This is one of the best ways to stay connected to God and to allow him to keep speaking to you throughout the year. If you want to do the Bible in One Year with us we’ll be kicking off again on September 1st and we’ll share a daily reading and video at bible.soulsurvivor.com.

We’ve loved hanging out with you this summer and it would be great to see you at one of the other events we run through the year. We’re always up for a cheeky chat on social media so pop over and say hi. You can also tell us about what God has been doing in your life by emailing testimonies@ soulsurvivor.com – we’d love to hear from you!

GET/STAY PLUGGED IN TO YOUR CHURCH AND YOUTH GROUP None of us can do the Christian life alone – God didn’t design us that way. Be an active and committed member of your church – go regularly, give your time and money, and get stuck in!

SERVE YOUR COMMUNITY/ STAND UP FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE One of the ways we worship God is through how we love and serve other people, especially those in need. Ask God to show you ways that you and your youth group can bless your community.

SOUL SURVIVOR WEEKS B & C 2018 EVENT PROGRAMME

SS_2018_Programme_WeeksB&C(Revised).indd 74

SOUL SURVIVOR SUNDAY! KEEP STEPPING OUT If you’ve started speaking in tongues, keep praying that way to God every day. If you’re longing to hear God’s voice, keep listening and humbly offering words to other people. Want to see people healed? Keep praying for them! The more we step out, the more we’ll see God do so keep going for it! You might want to try using the Everyday Supernatural Small Group Guide with your youth group to keep encouraging one another in your journey.

Have a Soul Survivor Sunday to let your church know what happened at Soul Survivor this summer. Loads of churches will be holding theirs on Sunday 9th September so that gives you some time to plan what you’d like it to look like. It may be that you take over the whole church service, or just have a few minutes for testimonies but you’ll find plenty of ideas and resources on our website (under the ‘About the events’ FAQ).

GIVE We try and keep the cost of our events low so that they are open to everyone and especially to those who don’t yet know Jesus. This means we don’t cover our costs through ticket prices and therefore all donations, whether one-off or regular monthly gifts, help us to do what we do. Money given also allows us to do things like provide resources for free such as the teaching on our website and YouTube channel. Head to our website to give online or to find giving forms. If Soul Survivor has been a blessing to your church we’d also really appreciate it if you were able to take up a one-off offering for us.

PRAY We want to pray that all those who come to our events go home blessed and equipped to keep following Jesus in all areas of their lives. Please pray with us, especially for those who have just come to faith and those who go home to particularly difficult situations that they would keep going in their faith and would know God with them.

MAKE OUR FINAL YEAR A GREAT CELEBRATION! We’ve been running Soul Survivor events since 1993 and we want to end in 2019 with a real celebration of God’s goodness. We’d love for you to join us and bring your mates along too. God isn’t finished with us yet and we’re excited and expectant of all that he will do during the rest of this summer and next! Bookings for 2019 will open at the end of the week.

GIVE WHEN YOU ARE INTERNET SHOPPING If you head to easyfundraising.co.uk you can nominate Soul Survivor as your preferred charity and then when you shop online, a number of retailers will donate money to us at no cost to you. Amazing eh?! Thanks so much for reading this and considering supporting us. We really couldn’t do what we do without amazing people like YOU!

SOUL ACTION EACH YEAR AT SOUL SURVIVOR WE CELEBRATE THE FREEDOM THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT BRINGS US. WE DELIGHT IN BEING SET FREE FROM THE THINGS THAT HOLD US BACK AND ASKING GOD TO LEAD US INTO FURTHER FREEDOM AS WE DISCOVER HIS CALLING AND EMPOWERMENT IN OUR LIVES. WE KNOW THAT WHERE THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS, THERE IS FREEDOM!

In recent years Soul Action has been focused on two areas: freedom from slavery for those who have been trafficked and held captive; and opening up the future for those who wouldn’t otherwise have access to a quality education.

ARTICLES

In 2005 we set up Soul Action so that the freedom that we experience at Soul Survivor events would continue beyond the showgrounds to some of the world’s poorest communities. All the people of the world are made in God’s image and our Father has good plans for all of us. However, Jesus taught us that there is an enemy who hates humans and who acts like a thief, trying to steal, kill and destroy people made in God’s image (John 10:10). In the same verse Jesus promised that he had come to bring fullness of life to God’s children.

YOU CAN JOIN THE FIGHT TO END SLAVERY! We can all help build a bridge to freedom for those held captive. Money helps, but if we are going to have investigators and lawyers and social workers knocking on the doors of brothels, sweatshops and fishing boats then we need to be knocking on the door of heaven too. Last year IJM and Soul Survivor launched Prayer for Justice to build a huge move of prayer to see the end of slavery. You can join the frontline of the fight to end slavery by signing up to pray at www.Pray4Justice.net

FREEDOM FOR THE FUTURE

FREEDOM FROM SLAVERY Sadly slavery isn’t a thing of the past. Today there are at least 40 million slaves in the world and while we are here at Soul Survivor another 1,400 children will have been sold. That’s two children every minute of every day. They are sold to work in sweatshops, brothels and fishing boats. We believe those children belong in families, playgrounds and schools instead. In short, they should be living in freedom. Working with International Justice Mission (IJM) we support the rescue of those in captivity, the rebuilding of their lives and the prosecution of the slave owners.

SOUL SURVIVOR WEEKS B & C 2018 EVENT PROGRAMME

SS_2018_Programme_WeeksB&C(Revised).indd 78

We take education for granted but across the world some of the poorest children are denied the opportunities that education brings, often because they are the wrong gender, caste or ethnic group; or simply because they are poor and they cannot afford an education or be spared from the family’s work. Since we began, Soul Action has supported projects to bring quality education to poor communities, particularly in South Africa. We have worked with Soul Action South Africa and a network of local partners who provide teacher training and support in informal settlements and townships. Right now we are working to develop a truly multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-social school that can provide quality education for children who would otherwise be denied the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

YOU CAN BUILD A BRIDGE TO FREEDOM BY PRAYING AND GIVING THROUGH OUR OFFERING (SEE PAGE 65) TO SUPPORT EDUCATION IN SOUTH AFRICA SO WE CAN HELP A NEW GENERATION FIND FREEDOM.

WHAT WILL I DO? You will develop your leadership skills at the heart of Soul Survivor Watford, getting involved in all aspects of church life, plus various conferences and events. Each week you will have two days of teaching with highly respected speakers plus practical training as part of either the worship or leadership stream. We want to prepare you to lead for the rest of your life and we believe the best way to do this is by trusting you with real situations and responsibilities.

WHEN DOES IT START? Courses run from the end of October to the end of August and you can apply now for both 2018/2019 and 2019/2020. The closing date for applications for this year’s course is 14th September.

WHAT IS SOUL61? Soul61 is an opportunity to set the foundation for a lifetime of leadership. We want to give you space to encounter God, worship him, wait on him and allow him to mould you into the person he wants you to be. Throw yourself in and you will be challenged and stretched in your character and gifts as you learn, grow and develop your skills.

WHO IS IT FOR? Soul61 is for anyone aged 18-24 who feels the call of God on their life to serve his people. We’re not looking for individuals who feel they have it all together; we’re after those who have a deep and genuine desire to develop their character, and have an openness to be used by God wherever he chooses.

EVERY NOW AND THEN WE HAVE TO GET A BIT OFFICIAL JUST TO MAKE SURE WE’RE CLEAR ABOUT A FEW THINGS. THESE RULES ARE LARGELY ABOUT KEEPING YOU SAFE WHILE YOU’RE HERE SO PLEASE HAVE A QUICK READ AND STICK TO THEM. 1. Youth leaders/responsible adults it is your duty and hopefully your joy to be responsible for the under 18s you brought with you at all times. 2. No alcohol is allowed on site. 3. Strictly no drugs, intoxicating agents (such as ‘legal highs’) or drug paraphernalia is allowed on site, except when medically prescribed. Anyone found in possession of drugs or suspected to be under the influence of drugs will be evicted from the site and be denied further entry to the event. Any such incidents will be reported to and dealt with by our site management team and the police representatives on site. 4. After arrival, all vehicles must be moved to the designated car parks to comply with fire and safety regulations. Only emergency vehicles or ones with a valid disabled badge are allowed on site. Cars may be forcibly removed if they are parked illegally on the site. 5. Event wristbands must be worn (around your wrist!) at all times and they are the only way to get access into the venues. There is a £1 charge to replace a broken wristband and a £40 charge to replace a lost one – pop along to Info for assistance. 6. Smoking is not allowed inside any of the buildings, marquees or individual tents and caravans. 7. Girls and guys aren’t allowed to share a tent/caravan/ accommodation unless married. 8. Outdoor ball games must be finished by 10pm, even if you’re playing the game of your life. 9. Tent pegs/poles or stakes must be less than 25 cm long. For larger tents/

marquees you may find some are longer than this and in this case you must comply with the underground utilities policy. This is to ensure there is no damage to gas, electric and water lines that run under the showground. (The policy has been emailed to group leaders and copies are in Info.) 10. Roller blading, skateboarding and cycling can only take place after dark if there is appropriate lighting i.e. if you have a light on your bike or you’re in a well-lit area (and no, the light from your smartphone doesn’t count!) 11. Tents and caravans can only be moved to a different village with permission from the Info team. This is so you can be contacted in the case of an emergency. 12. No speeding. When you arrive and leave the site please keep to the 10mph limit. We know it’s incredibly painful but it’s important to keep everyone safe. Think of it as a Godgiven opportunity to practice your patience. No driving lessons are allowed either.

doing this please let us know immediately in Info. 17. Promotion of organisations or activities that do not form part of the Soul Survivor event programme, including the distribution of literature, is only permitted by authorised exhibitors within the ToolShed. 18. We don’t operate holiday insurance or cancellation schemes so we strongly recommend you consult with an insurance broker if you need cover. We can’t be held responsible for loss or damage to people or personal property so please take care of yourself and your belongings. 19. Please be respectful of your surroundings and don’t go where you shouldn’t. That means no going into the woods or any section of the site that has been cordoned off with tape. 20. No flossing before 10.30am without the written approval of three youth leaders. 21. Please respect other people’s privacy and don’t take any photos or videos during ministry times.

13. No flyposting or damaging the site – please respect the property of the showground.

22. Open fires, fireworks and Chinese lanterns are not allowed. Sad, we know, as they are very pretty.

14. The only pets allowed at Soul Survivor are registered assistance dogs. If you have a registered assistance dog please introduce them to us in Info on arrival.

23. We know fluorescent jackets are pretty special but please don’t wear one unless you are a team member who is on duty.

15. Generators cannot be used on site. Electrical hook ups can only be provided where these have been arranged before arrival. 16. We don’t condone anyone forcing their views on others (including sectarian propaganda or proselytising), so if you see anyone
