WEEK A / SOUL SURVIVOR 2017

WELCOME TO SOUL SURVIVOR! It’s great to have you here and we’re so excited for all that God has in store for us this week. If this is your first time at Soul Survivor we hope you feel at home really quickly. If you’ve been with us before we think you’ll love some of the additions to this year’s programme. We’ve got a brand new venue called The Basement with a huge inflatable assault course, custom-made table tennis tubes, DJs, a skate park, a beauty area, and video games. Plus on night 4 we’ll be making our Silent Disco bigger and better than ever by taking it outside on to the sports field! In our seminars we’ll be tackling loads of different topics such as standing up to popular culture, dealing with the tough bits of the Bible, whether science and faith are compatible, relationship questions, being intimate with God, mission, and following Jesus when life is tough. As well as talking about mission we’re thrilled to be able to give lots of you the opportunity to go out into Stafford each day and bless local communities through practical projects. We’ve got loads lined up but, as always, the thing we’re most excited about is the stuff we can’t plan: what God wants to do. We want to make loads of space in our main meetings to encounter him in intimate ways through worship, to hear what he wants to say to us through his word, and to invite the Holy Spirit to meet with us in whatever way he chooses. There’s nothing better than spending time in God’s presence and we know that drawing close to him is what will change us. We’re longing that we each return home at the end of the week more in love with Jesus and more passionate than ever about following where he leads. Have a great week, Love Mike

ABOUT US ‘AN EVENT JUST FOR YOUNG PEOPLE? SOUNDS LIKE A CRAZY IDEA… BUT I THINK IT MIGHT JUST BE GOD.’

That’s what Mike’s boss at the time, David Pytches, told him when he shared the vision God had given him for Soul Survivor. And we’re so glad he did because that’s where Soul Survivor began and that’s how come we get to spend our summer with you! Our first event was in Somerset in 1993 and we’ve never looked back. We now run four Soul Survivor summer events for teenagers: one in Stafford, one in Scotland and two in Peterborough. Each has the same underpinning passion to bring young people together for five days of hanging out with one another and getting to know Jesus better, whilst

being equipped to follow him in all areas of life. This year we’ve also introduced Naturally Supernatural which is a Soul Survivor event for all ages that’s about equipping the whole church to lead Spirit-led lives. Plus we run a number of events throughout the year; you can find out more on page 70. Want to know more about us? Pop over and speak to the team at the Soul Survivor stand in the ToolShed, or head to our website www.soulsurvivor.com and click on ‘About’.

HEALTH AND SAFETY THERE ARE A FEW SIMPLE THINGS YOU CAN DO TO ENSURE YOU STAY SAFE AT SOUL SURVIVOR: Keep your mobile on you so you can be easily contacted. Give your youth leader an idea of where you’re going to be.

TESTIMONIES

You can use the testimony section of the Soul Survivor app to tell us your story and we’ll share some of them on social media. You can also email testimonies@soulsurvivor.com, give us a tweet @soulsurvivorgb or write your testimony out and pop it into the box on the stage. If you’d like us to keep it private, that’s no problem, just let us know.

Stay with at least one friend when you’re out at night.

FEEDBACK If you’ve got some thoughts on this week, things you loved and things you think we could improve on, then we’d love to hear them. We’ll post a survey online for you to fill out and you’ll also be entered into a prize draw to win a USB with all the talks on from this week! (There are separate surveys for each Soul Survivor week, one for youth leaders and another for you legends who serve on team.)

Don’t arrange to meet up alone with someone you’ve only recently met. Don’t assume someone is safe just because they are at a Christian event. Put the Soul Survivor emergency number in your phone 0300 302 0330 and call it if you need urgent help. Please DON’T phone emergency services yourself.

17/07/2017 17:12

DAY 1: 7pm DAYS 2-4: 10.30am and 7pm DAY 5: 10am (for Communion) and 7pm The best part of the week is that we all gather together morning and evening to worship God through song, hear teaching from the Bible and to pray for one another. We love spending time with you and with our amazing God and we want to leave these times open to where God wants to lead. That means although we tend to have a time of worship, followed by a talk, followed by prayer ministry, that’s all flexible depending on what we sense God wants to do. Whatever happens, Mike, Ali and Andy will be your hosts and they will talk you through what’s going on!

RELEVANT TEACHING The Bible is absolutely packed with amazing truth about who God is, how much he loves us and how we should follow him. Getting to know the Bible is the best way to get to know God, who he is, how he feels about us and how we should live our lives. We know that sometimes it can seem a bit daunting wondering what to read in such a big book and difficult to understand how to apply what was said thousands of years ago to our lives today. So in each of our main meetings one of our speakers will be delving into God's word and helping us to get the most out of it. You’ll quickly realise our style is pretty informal; we don’t take ourselves very seriously (though we do take God seriously) and we like to have a laugh as well as be challenged by what we’re hearing.

WORSHIP

MINISTRY

Worshipping God is at the very heart of what it means to be a Christian so it’s at the very heart of all we do here at Soul Survivor. Jesus said that the most important thing we can do is to love God with all our heart, soul and mind. There are many ways to express that love, but when we gather together one of the key ways is to sing songs of praise. This is an amazing opportunity to be intimate with our Creator, to tell him we love him, and to know more of his love for us.

We want to live in God's power rather than trying to live in our own strength so we make plenty of space to ask him to fill us with his Holy Spirit in our meetings. Anyone who is a Christian has the Holy Spirit living in them but this is a time of asking for an increased sense of his presence to equip, empower, heal, challenge and change us; to give us his gifts and give us a greater understanding of who he is.

VENUES

WEEK A / SOUL SURVIVOR 2017

If you’ve not been around prayer times like this before, don’t worry, Mike & co will keep chatting through what’s happening. We really encourage you to get involved both by inviting God to work in you and in praying for other people. There are some guidelines on page 66 if you’ve not prayed in this way before and we’ll also give you some top tips from the front. Get involved!

COMMUNION None of us would be here at Soul Survivor if it wasn’t for what Jesus did on the cross over 2000 years ago so on our last morning we take some time to remember his sacrifice for us. This is also a special time of giving God thanks for all he’s done during the week. Non-alcoholic wine and glutenfree bread will be available and stations serving these will be made clear during the meeting.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO During the week our official photographers and videographers will be taking pics and shooting footage that we will use for social media and promotional purposes. Please be assured that any video shot during ministry times will be handled with the greatest sensitivity in order to respect everyone’s privacy.

HERE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS WE’D LIKE YOU TO KNOW ABOUT THE TOOLSHED THAT WE’RE PRETTY SERIOUS ABOUT: All the stands and organisations are here to equip you in your relationship with Jesus. That means none of them should be getting upset if you don’t agree with their theological angle on things. If you feel like you’ve been accosted by an over-zealous exhibitor, then pop into Info and let one of our team know.

Most of the items that are sold in the ToolShed are either resources or a way of generating money to support the work of a charitable trust. We know lots of you like having a browse but the absolute last thing we want is for anyone to feel pressured to spend any cash. We’re not trying to make money out of you.

From time to time Mike, Ali or Andy might mention a book or resource on mainstage. Just so you know, there are no marketing deals going on – if they say they like it and think you will too, then they mean they like it and think you will too (not that someone is paying them to say it’s brilliant).

Basically what this boils down to is the fact we like you, we think you’re pretty special, and we don’t want you to feel like you’re having lots of stuff pushed at you. We want you to be able to relax and have a good time at Soul Survivor.

DAY PLANNER

We’ve got a jam-packed week lined up, including loads of great seminars to help us as we seek to follow Jesus is every area of our lives. The next few pages will help you to plan your days so have a browse to find out who will be speaking and the topic they will covering. Seminars last for around 45 minutes each, except for the Bite Size stream which features some new speakers whose talks will last about 15 minutes each. If you miss any seminars or there are two on at once that you’d like to hear, there’s no need to worry! You’ll be able to stream each talk on our website in the autumn, or if you’re keen to get your hands on the lot, you can grab a USB from the Soul Survivor stand in the ToolShed. As you are super cool and have bought an actual real-life, hold-it-in-yourhands, programme, flick to the back page to find discount vouchers to get a USB for £17 (discounted from £20) on an ‘All The Talks’ USB stick when you pre-order on site! Winning.

Entertainment wise you’ll want to check out our brand new venue, The Basement, with a huge inflatable assault course, awesome custom-made table tennis tubes, a skate park, and a DJ! You’re gonna love it! If you fancy checking out some resources head to the ToolShed, or if you’d like to talk and pray with one of our team come along to the Chat Room. Sports will be open for you to shoot some hoops and get stuck in at the Panna cage, or you can head to Café Uno if you fancy a boogie to our live band. Plus our friends at XLP would love to welcome you to their amazing bus. 9.30pm The first film of the week is Captain America: Civil War. WHO'S WHO?

TIM ALFORD Tim lives in Malvern, Worcestershire with his wife and two children where he is the National Director of Limitless (the youth ministry of the Elim Pentecostal Church), the youth ministry course leader at Regents Theological College, and a volunteer youth leader at The Source Church. Tim is a frustrated supporter of Arsenal, and has on more than one occasion been to the cinema in Star Wars fancy dress.

s

GUVNA B Guvna B is a double MOBO awardwinning, rap artist from London whose last release was the UK’s highest charting ‘clean’ rap album. Known for his positive, energetic and inspiring lyricism, he draws from personal experience and stays at the cutting edge of urban trends.

JOHN BODILY John is the Newcomers and Evangelism Pastor at Trent Vineyard in Nottingham. He’s a little bit scared of dogs, loves a bit of duck and orange pâté, and does great impersonations of cats, clocks and dripping water!

DAN BROWN After many years leading a network of Christian youth projects in Sheffield, Dan is now the Vicar of Wadsley church which aims to reach the local community on the edge of the city. He is married to Sarah and they have three children.

MINU CHOWDHURYWESTLAKE For the last 18 years Minu has been focused on social justice, working with both national and international

charities as director of marketing and communications. She now works as a crisis intervention consultant whilst home-schooling daughter Ellie. Minu helped launch Soul Action with her husband David 12 years ago.

CLAIRE COOKE Despite three years of preparation and study Claire was still surprised to find herself becoming a Rev in the Church of England. She loves a good adventure and this year explored the East Coast of Australia with her family.

ANDY CROFT Andy is part of the team that leads Soul Survivor and our associated church Soul Survivor Watford. He’s married to Beth who will be leading us in worship this week, and together they are parents to Josiah and Judah. Andy is a fan of complicated theology books, tweetable quotes, and working out to the Rocky soundtrack.

BETH CROFT Beth has been part of the Soul Survivor team for many years leading worship at Soul Survivor Watford and at our summer events. She has written a number of songs (some of which can be found on her album ‘Rule in my heart’) but she’s no one trick pony. She’s also a maths whizz, a dab hand at crafty DIY projects and mum to Josiah and Judah.

KATIE DOWDS Katie has recently graduated from the University of Leeds and now serves as a Pastor at Lighthouse in West Yorkshire which is a fresh expression of church for those who have been battered and bruised by the storms of life.

CHRIS LANE Chris leads Langworthy Community Church in Salford. He is married to Esther and is teaching his three children to follow Jesus and Manchester United, in that order. His ideal evening involves big fat theology books and even bigger tubs of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. In the autumn Chris will be releasing his first book, ‘Ordinary Miracles’.

PRINCE LARYEA Mr Prince is a former member of UK hiphop crew 29th Chapter who has a passion to inspire Christians to get into the mainstream arts. He lives in West London with his wife and three children.

ALI MARTIN Ali is part of the Leadership Team of Soul Survivor and our associated church Soul Survivor Watford. She helps train and equip speakers in their communication skills and is the author of a book on that topic called ‘Loud & Clear’. Ali is married to Joel, mum to Will and Esther, and fan of disaster movies, but has a deepseated aversion to tea and cats.

OPEN DOORS Open Doors supports people who are beaten, tortured, ridiculed, imprisoned, falsely accused, disowned, ignored and hated simply for following Jesus. They provide persecuted Christians with Bibles, training, livelihood skills, advocacy, and more, so that they know they are not forgotten and can stand strong to serve their communities.

MIKE PILAVACHI Mike is known for his love of bad jokes, his passion for growing grapevines and his ability to endlessly watch West Wing on repeat. He gave birth to all things Soul Survivor (which probably was as painful as it sounds) and heads up all that goes on at the events and at our church Soul Survivor Watford, as well as travelling the world telling people about Jesus.

FREDDIE PIMM Freddie works as a doctor in the NHS and is the author of the new book 'The Selfish Gospel'. He attends St Albans Fulham with his wife, Becky, and he loves talking, especially about his two passions: great food and great hair.

TIM ROSS Tim is the senior pastor of the multiethnic, multi-generation Embassy City Church in Irving, Texas. He travels around the world helping people understand the gospel, is married to Juliette and dad to Nathan and Noah.

MARTIN SAUNDERS Martin has spent 15 years in youth ministry and is the

author of ‘The Beautiful Disciplines’ and ‘Youthwork from Scratch’. He works for Youthscape, a national charity that’s focussed on innovation in Christian youth ministry.

TOM SMITH Tom heads up worship at Soul Survivor and Soul Survivor Watford having previously been part of the Worship Central team. He is married to Susi and they have just become parents to Sonny so he’s getting used to living on an hour’s sleep and a tonne of caffeine.

MIRIAM SWAFFIELD Miriam leads the student mission stuff for Fusion, a movement that connects students to church through studentlinkup. org and helps this generation share Jesus with their mates. She travels a lot, loves the local church and thinks she’s more of a surfer than she actually is.

BOB WALLINGTON Bob is the Youth Pastor at Soul Survivor Watford as well as being husband to Tabi and dad to Phoebe. He loves sports, movies, the sea and telling stories of the mischief he got up to when he was in Mike P’s youth group.

DAVID WESTLAKE In the last year David has taken up the role of CEO of International Justice Mission UK having previously spent many years as International Director at Tearfund. He co-founded the Cinnamon Network, which helps churches build transforming relationships with their communities, is married to Minu and dad/taxi driver to daughter Ellie.

JOHN WILLIAMS John is the Senior Pastor of Primrose Hill Community Church in Dudley, West Midlands where he loves hearing people’s stories, dreaming big dreams, and trying to follow after God’s heart. John is married to Ruth and they have two kids, Melody and Noah.

RUTH WILLIAMS Ruth is a senior leader at Primrose Hill Community Church in Dudley where she oversees the Youth and Children’s ministries and is a Deputy Head Teacher. She is married to John and mum to Melody and Noah.

IN AN EMERGENCY

INFO POINTS

Try not to panic, just give Comms a ring on 0300 302 0330 and they will swing into action. (Alternatively you can pop in to Info if you’re nearby or ask any member of team that has a radio to contact Comms for you.) Please DON’T call emergency services yourself as this can delay help getting to the right place.

WRISTBANDS What makes a steward smile? When you walk into a venue with your arm held high and your wristband clearly visible! You can’t access any of our venues without your wristband so please do keep it safely around your wrist at all times. It’s pretty sturdy and won’t fall apart in the shower but if you do manage to break it please bring the resulting pieces to Info and we’ll print you a new one for £1. If you lose it altogether that would be a very sad day as you’ll need to pay £40 for a replacement. It’s very important that everyone wears the correct wristband so they can be identified in case of an emergency so please don’t swap wristbands with anyone else. If for any reason you have the wrong one, please pop to Info and we’ll sort that out for you.

FACILITIES FOR HEARING-IMPAIRED The main meeting and seminar venues have loop system facilities, and the main meetings will be signed. Please speak to an usher (you’ll know them by their bright jackets) if you need any help.

CASHPOINT

LOST PROPERTY

The nearest cashpoint is at the Asda supermarket which is a five minute drive from here. You can get cash back if you make a purchase from the camping essentials stand in the ToolShed.

Left your Bible behind in the main meeting? Having so much fun in the Basement that you forgot to pick up your hoody? Wondering where you might have misplaced your mobile? Come along to Info and we’ll do our best to reunite you. We give non-valuable items to a local charity on the morning of Day 6 so please make sure you pop in for anything you’ve misplaced before then. We take valuable items (Bibles, phones, wallets) back to our office in Watford and share them out amongst ourselves. Kidding. We’ll keep them safe for you so please get in contact if you’d like to be reunited (info@ soulsurvivor.com or call 0303 333 1333). Please note our events go on until 29th August and then our office will be closed for a while so we can all recover; please bear with us if we don’t respond straight away.

STEWARDS Stewards are easy to identify by their fluorescent yellow jackets and their beautiful faces. They do an amazing job in keeping us all safe here at Soul Survivor so please do follow their instructions and don’t forget to flash them your wristband as you enter venues.

VILLAGE HOSTS Your village hosts are here to make you feel at home and should be your first port of call if you have any questions, if you need to borrow a mallet to sort out your tent pegs, or if you fancy a hot chocolate and a chat.

ADDITIONAL NEEDS If anyone in your group has any additional needs, please pop into Info and chat to us so we can work together to make sure they have the best week possible.

HEALTH AND SAFETY We know this is your favourite page in the entire programme – who doesn’t love a few health and safety regs?!

FIRE REGS If you’re using a tent for cooking please make sure that it is 3 metres away from all other tents in order to comply with fire safety regulations. Our lovely village hosts will be on hand if you get your metres and yards confused. If you have a BBQ please make sure it is placed on a hardstanding surface and not directly on the ground.

FIRST AID AND SICKNESS For everyday issues (such as headaches and small cuts) please see your group leader who should have a good supply of pain killers and plasters. For anything more serious pop along to see our medical team of first aiders, doctors and nurses who you’ll find out the back of the main meeting venue. They are available from 9am till midnight but if you need help outside of these hours please come to Info. In an emergency please ring 0300 302 0330 (this number is also on your wristband) – please do not contact the emergency services yourself as this can delay help getting to you.

ONGOING MEDICAL CONDITIONS Please pop in and make our medical team aware of any ongoing medical conditions that may need attention while you’re here at Soul Survivor. The team can also store any medication for you. If you fall ill with diarrhoea and/or vomiting, please say in your tent and contact the first aid team through your group leader. Don’t forget the basics! Washing your hands thoroughly and using antibacterial gel can help keep bugs away and help us all stay happy campers.

ROAD SAFETY The showground is on the Weston Road which gets really busy so please use the underpass if you need to cross over.

WEEK A / SOUL SURVIVOR 2017

THE OFFERING As part of our worship we take up an offering during the main evening meeting on Day 4. All the money given will be split equally between young leaders, the persecuted church and Soul Action projects. Please don’t feel under any pressure to give but if you would like to just follow the instructions given during the meeting. Gift Aid envelopes will be available for everyone who is lucky enough to pay tax so please fill one in and help us to claim an extra 25p for every pound that you give. Please make any cheques payable to Soul Survivor Limited.

RAISING UP YOUNG LEADERS We love working with young people who love God and long to serve him and his church. Every year we run a ten-month Soul61 leadership course, as well as a number of one-day conferences to invest in future church leaders/planters, worship leaders and speakers.

SOUL ACTION Soul Action is the part of Soul Survivor that’s all about helping each of us find ways to stand up against injustice and see the liberating life of Jesus experienced in some of the poorest and most vulnerable places on earth. In the last year your giving has supported education and safe housing for children and backed the fight to end violence against women

in South Africa. Together we will support education for the poor, fight slavery, back social entrepreneurs and provide opportunities for each of us to get stuck in and get involved.

PERSECUTED CHURCH Around the world many of our Christian brothers and sisters are persecuted for their faith. They aren’t allowed to meet together or own a Bible and can be heavily fined, arrested, imprisoned, tortured and even killed for their faith. We work with church leaders in and around Central Asia to encourage and help equip believers following Jesus in the most difficult circumstances. You’re also welcome to drop any donations into Info during the week if that’s more convenient.

WEEK A / SOUL SURVIVOR 2017

If you love what we do, we’d love for you to get involved and partner with us! We’re a small charity and we need financial support and lots of volunteers to be able to make Soul Survivor happen. However young or old you are and however much (or little!) time or money you have, there are ways you could be a huge blessing to our work:

GIVE – TIME

GIVE – BY PRAYING

We need thousands of volunteers every summer to give their time and energy to make everything run smoothly. We have teams that do everything from setting up the venues before everyone else arrives, to making food to sustain all the other teams; from bandaging knees in the first aid venue, to playing with the little ones in the children’s venues. There are roles to suit everyone, although you do need to be over 16 (and over 18 for many teams). Check out our website for more info on each team and how to apply.

We’d love for you to pray that God would meet with people at our events as that’s the whole reason we do what we do! We long for more people to know Jesus and for all of us to go deeper in relationship with him. We’d also love for you to pray for us that we could follow where God wants to lead us and that we’d be obedient to him.

GIVE - MONEY Every penny that is given to us makes a difference and if Soul Survivor has been a blessing to you, we’d love for you to consider setting up a standing order to support us on a monthly basis. It doesn’t have to be a huge amount to help us out; if hundreds of people were able to give a few pounds it would soon add up. One-off donations are also hugely appreciated, as is any fundraising you can do on our behalf. You can give online at www.soulsurvivor.com/give

OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP: Please help us spread the word about Soul Survivor through social media. Let your mates know if you’d had a great time and invite them to come and join us next year! If you’re a fan of internet shopping you can raise money for us without it costing you a penny! Head to easyfundraising.co.uk and select Soul Survivor as your cause, then click through to your favourite shops as usual. Each time you click, the shops will donate to us – easy as that! Head to the Give section of our website to find out more and get involved – we’d love to partner with you!

BE ON OUR TEAM We want YOU! Yep, that’s right, we’d love for you to come and join our team and help make Soul Survivor happen. If you’re over 16, we’re sure we can find you a role you’ll love where you’ll get to work behind the scenes, meet loads of great people and get closer to God. We’ve got something for all skills and interests whether you’re a keen footballer, know how to make the perfect cup of tea, can keep a room full of toddlers entertained, or just love playing with walkie talkies. Check out the different teams and roles on our website and see what takes your fancy.

HERE’S WHAT SOME OF LAST YEAR’S TEAM SAID ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES: ‘SERVING HAS HELPED ME TO GROW CLOSER TO GOD.’ ‘BEING ON TEAM WAS A TRULY AMAZING EXPERIENCE.’

‘WORKING ON TEAM IS ALWAYS SPECIAL. IT’S ALWAYS A PRIVILEGE TO SERVE GOD AND TO GET TO KNOW NEW TEAM MEMBERS.’

We love our team members so much that we give them a free space and many have their meals provided too. We couldn’t do what we do, without people like you so head to www.soulsurvivor.com/team for more info and to apply!

SOUL ACTION Soul Action is the part of Soul Survivor that exists to help all of us do something about issues of poverty and injustice; to serve the least the last and the lost without ever giving up hope. We believe that Christians are called to shine like stars in the darkness and to bring the liberating life of Jesus to all those made in his image. While you are at this event 16,500 children will be sold into slavery*. Of those still living in freedom, 260 million school-aged children are denied education^. Each of these are children who were created by God to have a future and a hope. What can we do when faced with such devastating statistics? We can PRAY! Come to our prayer labyrinth in the ToolShed to take a journey of discovery, learning more about poverty and slavery, and offering prayers to God to bring change.

We’ve written this prayer to express our desire to submit to God and commit to seeing injustice end. We hope you’ll visit our prayer labyrinth and join your voice with ours. Lord, I want to listen to you. I want to obey you, To bring about change, To speak up against injustice, To see an end to slavery. I will say against injustice: Not in my town, Not in my country, Not in my world. I will celebrate you Jesus. The light has come in the darkness, And the darkness could not overcome you. By your light we will: Innovate, bringing Holy Spirit solutions to world problems. Educate - we dream of building a school to: Create. Collaborate. Motivate. Cultivate. Elevate. Liberate. Together. To start a ‘change reaction’. To see a ripple become a wave. I will weep. Pray. Challenge. Be challenged. Obey. Act. Give. And go. Father I pray, unleash your Holy Spirit in me that I would help bring your kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. Amen

SOUL61 LEADERSHIP IS SERVICE WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

WHAT WILL I DO?

Soul61 is an opportunity to set the foundation for a lifetime of leadership. We want to give you space to encounter God, worship him, wait on him and allow him to mould you into the person he wants you to be. Throw yourself in and you will be challenged and stretched in your character and gifts as you learn, grow and develop your skills.

You will develop your leadership skills at the heart of Soul Survivor, getting involved in all aspects of church life, various conferences and events. Each week you will have two days of teaching with highly respected speakers plus practical training as part of either the worship or leadership stream. We want to prepare you to lead for the rest of your life and we believe the best way to do this is by trusting you with real situations and responsibilities.

WHO IS IT FOR ? Soul61 is for anyone aged 18-24 who feels the call of God on their life to serve his people. We’re not looking for individuals who feel they have made it; we’re after those who have a deep and genuine desire to develop their character, and have an openness to be used by God wherever he chooses.

WHEN DOES IT START? The next course will run from 28th October 2017 through to the end of August 2018.

WHERE DO I APPLY? The Soul61 team will be answering your questions in the ToolBox on Day 5 in between the afternoon seminars. They will also be available to chat on the Soul61 stand in the ToolShed all week, or you can visit www.soul61.co.uk

EVERYDAY SUPERNATURAL SPIRIT-LED SMALL GROUP GUIDE Last year, Mike and Andy wrote a book called Everyday Supernatural looking at how we can lead a Spirit-led life. We heard that loads of people were reading the book as a group and journeying together to put what they were learning into practice so we’ve now produced a Spirit-Led Small Group Guide to help out.

G U I D1 E ALL GROUP S MGROUP? L E D SMALL I RISI TS PWHAT A ‘SPIRIT- LED’

The guide takes you through how to lead a small group that wants to move more in the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit, making it really accessible to anyone who is keen to give it a go. The guide is flexible so you can use it for six to nine sessions depending on how much time you have, and we’ve suggested questions for discussion as well as practical things to do each week at home to keep learning and growing. There’s also some helpful info around how to lead a ministry time as that will be a key part of the group time.

The guide is free with every purchase of Everyday Supernatural from the Soul Survivor stand, or you can buy them for £1 each. It’s also available to download for free as a PDF. Pop over to our stand to check them out and if you buy 10 copies of Everyday Supernatural, you’ll get one free, plus we’ll give you 11 small group guides so your small group is all set!

WEEK A / SOUL SURVIVOR 2017

Ever wondered why we do the things we do? Here are some answers to the questions we most commonly get asked. If there’s something you’d like to know that we haven’t answered, drop us an email at info@soulsurvivor.com.

WHY DO PEOPLE CLOSE THEIR EYES AND PUT THEIR HANDS UP IN WORSHIP? Many people close their eyes as it helps keep them from being distracted while they worship. Some raise their hands as a sign of praise (in Psalm 63 the psalmist says, ‘I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands’) and hold out their hands as a way of showing they are surrendering to God and want to receive from him. There is no right or wrong way to worship God and it doesn’t matter so much what we’re doing with our bodies, it’s more about what’s going on in our hearts. You may want to shout, dance and jump about, or you may want to be quiet and still. As long as you’re focussed on Jesus (and you’re not trampling on anyone else!) then that’s what counts.

WHY DO PEOPLE DO STRANGE THINGS WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT MOVES? When God’s Spirit rests on people during ministry times they may laugh, cry, move around or just be still. All of this is totally fine. Ministry times are about giving God space to meet with us however he wants and so the best thing we can do is be as open as possible to him and

not worry about what anyone else is doing. We don’t want to hype anything up or stop people from expressing themselves and so we try not to focus on people’s outward manifestations and focus instead on what God is doing in our hearts, minds and bodies. Mike, Ali and Andy will chat through what’s going on and if you have any questions about ministry times please do chat to someone on the enabling team, to your youth worker or to a member of the Chat Room team.

CAN MY BAND PLAY AT SOUL SURVIVOR? The Bandstand is a great opportunity for you/your band to play at Soul Survivor and is open to everyone; just chat to the hosts about signing up for a session in the afternoon. Unfortunately other opportunities to play are limited and we get a large number of bands contacting us for just a few slots. If you are part of a band that already has a good following please do send us a sample of your music but because of the volume of requests we receive we’re sorry that we can’t reply to everyone personally.

CAN I BE PART OF THE WORSHIP BAND, DO A SEMINAR/SPEAK AT BITE SIZE? CAN I GET THE LYRICS/ CHORD CHARTS TO THE SONGS WE’VE BEEN SINGING? Lots of these are available online for free, and some are in song books that you can buy. For any new songs written by our team we’ll post chord charts and lyrics as soon as we can after our summer events.

We absolutely love hearing that you guys are keen worshippers and passionate about preaching God’s word and want to do all we can to encourage you in that so check out our website for upcoming dates for equipping events. At our summer events we only have speakers and band members who we know and are in relationship with just so we can ensure their integrity and love for Jesus. Continued...

SOUL SURVIVOR 2017 / WEEK A

WHY DO YOU CLOSE ALL THE OTHER VENUES WHEN THE MAIN MEETINGS ARE ON? The main meetings are the highlight of our time together so we close everything else so we can all come together to worship God, hear from his word and pray for one another. We also have hundreds of volunteers working in these venues so closing them twice a day gives them an opportunity to take some time off and come and meet with Jesus.

CAN I WORK FOR SOUL SURVIVOR? We’re a pretty small team, based in Watford, but we do occasionally have vacancies that we advertise on our website and on social media. Keep your eyes peeled! Every summer we need thousands of volunteers to make our events happen so if you’d like a peek behind the scenes, apply to be on team and get involved! All the info is on our website.

WHY IS MIKE SO MEAN TO PEOPLE ON STAGE? One of Mike’s quirks is that he likes to tease his friends and that means he often makes cheeky remarks about them on stage. Please don’t be offended! Mike’s being affectionate

rather than mean; we promise you he only ever teases someone who knows that he loves them.

WHY DO WE HAVE TO SIT ON THE FLOOR? Whilst we’d love to all sit in luxurious seats, it would mean we could only get a fraction of the number of people in the main meetings. You’re welcome to bring a back support in with you but unfortunately, for health and safety reasons, we can’t allow pillows, fold up chairs or big cushions into the meetings. If you really need a chair there are a small number made available; chat to a steward if you can’t spot them.

WHY AREN’T THERE MORE SHOWERS? We hire loads more showers than the number recommended for an event of this size in order to reduce your waiting time. Queues of course tend to be longer in the morning so you might want to shower in the afternoon/at night to save some time.

We have a big team of cleaners who try and keep the showers and toilets clean for you but if you spot any problems just pop into Info and let us know.

WHY ARE THE FOOD VANS SO EXPENSIVE? Unfortunately we aren’t able to control the price of the food van but the onsite shop provides some cheaper alternatives as does the local supermarket. Check out the food info on the ‘Things to Know’ pages.

WHY DOES SOUL SURVIVOR FUNDRAISE WHEN WE HAVE TO PAY TO BE HERE? We try and keep the costs down for you so Soul Survivor remains accessible to as many people as possible but that means the fees you pay don’t cover everything it costs us to make the events run. We couldn’t do what we do without the amazing people who support us financially – if you’d like to be one of them, find out more on page 50 or head to the ‘give’ section of our website.

WEEK A / SOUL SURVIVOR 2017

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I GET HOME? HOW DO I SUSTAIN THIS HIGH? We hope you’ve had a brilliant time and are leaving Soul Survivor on a high, having met with God and had a great time with your mates. But we know that going home can present some challenges… As Christians we’re not immune to life’s ups and downs but through them all we want to keep deepening our relationship with God. Here are our top tips to help you grow in your faith:

READING YOUR BIBLE This is one of the best ways to stay connected to God and to allow him to keep speaking to you throughout the year. If you want to do the Bible in One Year with us we’ll be kicking off again on September 1st and we’ll share a daily reading and video on our free app.

GET/STAY PLUGGED IN TO YOUR CHURCH AND YOUTH GROUP None of us can do the Christian life alone – God didn’t design us that way. Be an active and committed member of your church – go regularly, give your time and money, and get stuck in!

KEEP STEPPING OUT If you’ve started speaking in tongues, keep praying that way to God every day. If you’re longing to hear God’s voice, keep listening and humbly offering words to other people. Want to see people healed? Keep praying for them! The more we step out, the more we’ll see God do so keep going for it! You might want to try using the Everyday Supernatural Small Group Guide with your youth group to keep encouraging one another in your journey.

SERVE YOUR COMMUNITY/STAND UP FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE One of the ways we worship God is through how we love and serve other people, especially those in need. Ask God to show you ways that you and your youth group can bless your community, get involved with Soul Action, and think about whether you could get involved with HOPE Bristol over Easter 2018.

KEEP IN TOUCH We’ve loved hanging out with you this summer and it would be great to see you at one of the other events we run through the year. We’re always up for a cheeky chat on social media so pop over and say hi. You can also tell us about what God has been doing in your life via the app or by emailing testimonies@soulsurvivor. com – we’d love to hear from you!

SOUL SURVIVOR SUNDAY! Have a Soul Survivor Sunday to let your church know what happened at Soul Survivor this summer. Loads of churches will be holding theirs on Sunday 10th September so that gives you some time to plan what you’d like it to look like. It may be that you take over the whole church service, or just have a few minutes for testimonies but you’ll find plenty of ideas and resources on our website (under the ‘About the events’ FAQ).

WEEK A / SOUL SURVIVOR 2017

One of the things we’re really passionate about at Soul Survivor is meeting with God. During the main meetings we will always try to let God lead what’s going on and make space for him to meet with us. As part of this Mike, Ali and Andy will make space for us to wait on the Holy Spirit and pray for groups of people they believe God particularly wants to meet with. This is a great opportunity for God to work in our lives and it’s brilliant to be as open to him as possible. Don’t worry if you’ve never been prayed for in this way, or if you’re not sure how to pray for others; Mike and co will talk you through what’s going on and some basics for praying. We also have an experienced enabling team who will be around to help you and answer your questions. We’d really encourage you to get along to Ali Martin's seminar ‘Prayer ministry 101' on Day 2 as well.

WHAT HAPPENS? Ministry times usually begin with an invitation from someone on the stage for people to wait on and respond to the Holy Spirit. The most important thing to remember is that this is God’s work, not ours. Try to stay open to what God might want to do in your life and invite him to speak to you. Everyone responds differently to meeting with God so try not to focus too much on your reaction or the reactions of those around you. We can experience God in all sorts of ways and physical manifestations

aren’t the important thing. If you’d like to receive from God just stay focused on him. If you’d like to pray for other people, have a read on for some helpful tips.

A GUIDE TO PRAYING FOR OTHERS… When you’re praying remember that you are there to encourage those seeking God and to bless what the Holy Spirit is doing. There is no ‘right way’ to pray for each other but we’ve included these guidelines as they are tried and tested and tend to work quite well! While you’re with us please stick to the advice given. Lots of it is just straight-forward common sense! In general feel free to pray for anyone regardless of gender but please be aware that at times, when ministry is of a sensitive nature, we will ask that girls pray for girls and guys pray for guys. Don’t be afraid to ask someone what they would like you to pray for and what God is doing even if the Holy Spirit is moving powerfully on them (in Luke 18:40 Jesus asks the blind man ‘What do you want me to do for you?’). However, be aware of not turning this into a long conversation; you don’t need to offer advice and

counselling but allow space for the Holy Spirit to do what he would like to do.

importance but DO NOT promise to keep anything secret, especially with regards to claims of abuse. Your first point of contact in such a situation should be a member of the enabling team. They are there to support you

If appropriate you can speak into the situation or condition in Jesus’ name, but be sensitive and recognise that you may be wrong. If you have a prophetic word or picture, offer these as a prayer or in such a way that the person being prayed for can make their own decision as to how appropriate they are. Never insist that what you have to say is a word from God and always seek to strengthen, encourage and comfort the person you’re praying for (1 Corinthians 14:3). Encourage the person to receive from God and be still, rather than praying for themselves. Some people may show this attitude by opening their hands in front of them. The laying on of hands to pray is Biblical. We see Jesus touch a man to heal him of leprosy in Mark 1: 40-45 and he lays hands on the children to bless them in Matthew 19:13-15. That said, not everyone is comfortable with this so please be sensitive. Please also use common sense about where you place your hands so it doesn’t become distracting for the person you are praying for. Keep your eyes open when you pray for someone. This means you are more aware of what God is doing and how the person is responding.

and the person you are praying with and will be able to take things further if necessary. It also means you can grab them some tissues if they start crying or be prepared if they look like they may fall over in the power of the Spirit. If someone does fall over in the power of the Holy Spirit then please make sure they are in a comfortable position, not draped over anyone else and that their dignity is maintained (i.e. nothing is on show that shouldn’t be). If you can, put a jumper or jacket under the person’s head. It is not always necessary to stay with them for the whole time but if you move away encourage them to keep receiving from God and keep an eye on them to check they are safe. It can be helpful to quietly let them know that you will return in a little while so they know that they are not forgotten. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and encouragement, and be prepared to wait; this is God’s work, not yours. The person you are praying for may tell you about things that have happened in their life but don’t appear to be shocked by any disclosures. Remember that confidentiality is of the utmost

It’s very important to allow the expression of feelings and this might mean people cry, shake or respond in other ways to what God is doing. This is totally fine but be careful not to suppress or to build up the situation. Alternatively some people might not seem to respond physically at all. That’s fine too. We want God to do what he wants to do, we don’t want to get in the way of that and we want to make sure people leave a time of ministry feeling loved and valued. It’s brilliant to have more than one person praying for someone at a time so feel free to go over and join someone who’s praying already. That said, it can be distracting if a large group gather around someone when the ministry is of a sensitive nature so please ensure people have enough personal space. If at any time you feel out of your depth then please ask for help from the enabling team. We all find ourselves in situations that we can’t handle alone. This is not failure and it’s often good to pray with others, plus it’s a great way to learn more!

WEEK A / SOUL SURVIVOR 2017

PRAYING FOR PHYSICAL HEALING When Jesus healed people in the Bible he spoke to the sickness and ailments and commanded them to be healed. Jesus gives us the power and authority to do the same in his name. So, for example, if you are praying for a sight problem, speak to the eye and tell it to ‘Be open and see in Jesus’ name’. If you’re praying for an ear, speak to the ear and tell it to be open and hear in the name of Jesus. When praying for injuries that cause pain or immobility ask the person what level of pain they have on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest pain possible). Speak to the condition in the name of Jesus and command it to be healed. Speak to the pain and tell it very firmly to ‘Stop it,’ in Jesus’ name (but remember you don’t need to shout!). If appropriate speak to the mobility of the joint or limb and tell it to be healed in Jesus’ name. After this short prayer ask the person to test for pain and mobility in the injured area. Ask for the number out of 10 of the level of pain and mobility to see if it has gone down. Repeat the prayer, if necessary, as many times as you are both comfortable with.

AND FINALLY… Not everyone is familiar with ministry and prayer times and some people feel a bit concerned or nervous when they become aware of God working through his Holy Spirit. We need to help people who are receiving feel comfortable and safe, and to encourage them to reach out to God. Always be sensitive and respectful, keeping in mind how you would like to be prayed for, and constantly asking for God’s help. Reassure those being prayed for that God has heard sincere prayers and the cries of our hearts and encourage them to expect answers. Speak healing, peace and release in the name of Jesus and remember the place of repentance, forgiveness and being forgiven.

If someone would like extra prayer you can refer them to a member of the enabling team or to the Chat Room which is open every afternoon and evening. Encourage the person to receive as much prayer as they like during the event but also to seek ongoing ministry support from their home church. Don’t make any appointments to pray with people you don’t know outside of the meeting. All these are tips to help you let God work through you. Remember: don’t worry! The enabling team and the person leading the meeting will be giving directions and advice to everyone. The important thing is that you are ready and willing to pray for those around you.

HOPE BRISTOL TUESDAY 3RD – SATURDAY 7TH APRIL 2018 We’ve loved taking you guys out on mission here in Stafford these last two years and we hope loads of you will get involved in an exciting mission opportunity next Easter! We’d love for hundreds of us to descend on Bristol from 3rd to the 7th April to serve local communities in practical ways. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to put Jesus’ love into action, demonstrating the good news through our words and actions. We know from previous missional events that, as we go, God does something amazing in our hearts. It’s as we step out that become more like Jesus, passionate about caring for those in need. At HOPE Bristol we’ll have times of gathering together for worship, teaching and ministry led by Mike, Andy and team before we head out to various projects around the city. We’re working with local churches and organisations who are on the ground and can make sure we serve in the most useful ways. Projects are likely to include things like putting on family fun afternoons, renovating school buildings, clearing overgrown public spaces, hosting afternoon teas for senior citizens, and organising football training and tournaments. We’ll provide food, transport and a place to sleep all for £60 per person (or £30 if you’re local to Bristol). Our hope and prayer is that we bless Bristol and then go back to our cities, towns and villages energised and equipped to share the good news in our local communities through our words and actions. Pick up a flyer in the ToolShed to find out more and get booked on at www.soulsurvivor.com.

We’ve also produced a Spirit-led Small Group Guide for those who want to read this book alongside others,
