We have a dedicated staff and a wonderful School community who all share the same core purpose of providing the very best educational opportunities for all our students. There are always engaging learning experiences occurring in the Junior School. Experiences such as the Canberra Trip help stimulate, authenticate and reinforce classroom learning. When students take on personal challenges, strive to meet or exceed them, the sense of accomplishment and pride is well founded and worthy of recognition.

Therewere. were many highlights for the students (and staff) including visits to the Australian War Memorial, Government House, the old and new Parliament House, the High Court, the National Museum, CSIRO, and Questacon. They also enjoyed their evening activities at the Canberra Reptile Zoo, Rock Climbing and Ice Skating.

The Year 6 students are to be commended for representing our School with great pride at the many venues they visited. For many students there were a few firsts, including; flying, travelling interstate and being away from home for an extended period. We were proud of how brave they were at accepting these challenging firsts.

Thank you to Miss Clarke for preparing the students with the knowledge and understanding that enabled them to answer many of the tour guide’s questions and engage in informed discussion. It was very affirming to receive the positive feedback from the tour guides acknowledging how well behaved, courteous and knowledgeable our students

YEAR 6 CANBERRA EXPERIENCE

Year 6 students recently travelled to Canberra for an educational tour of the national capital. Students were afforded the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Year 6 students fully embraced all aspects of their Canberra experience and were able to absorb information by listening and talking to guides and observing their surroundings intently. I’m sure all students have a wealth of knowledge, many stories they can share with others, and experiences they will recount as a group for many years to

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital, as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. Under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program, the Australian Government provides funding of $225 per student to assist in reducing the travel costs for this educational experience. We thank the Government for their support, and look forward to receiving the rebate which will be paid directly to the School in the coming weeks.

also paused to remember Queen Elizabeth II during a once in a lifetime 96 gun salute at Parliament House on Friday evening. I am sure that this is something they will remember for many years to come, and I was incredibly proud to hear that they were respectful and conducted themselves with pride on this very important occaThanksion. you Miss Clarke, Mrs Dickson, Mr Turner, and Mr Lee for sharing this experience and taking the responsibility of supervising the students during this trip. I know they all slept well after they returned on Saturday evening.

ENTRANCE UPDATE

Over the holidays many students will enjoy the freedom of less structure and routine compared with the School day and this is a great chance for them to ‘let their hair down’ and relax. This can sometimes make the return to ‘all the rules’ difficult in Term 4. All staff will be reminding students of the ASSG Code (Always learning, Staying safe, Serving others and Going forward) on return in order to assist students with making good choices. We want to give our students every opportunity to explore who they are as a person, so they can continue to grow together within our School. We value and appreciate your continued support and emphasising the importance of making good choices going forward.

Earlier this week our maintenance crew installed the final pieces of our entranceway roof. I am sure that you would agree this is a welcome addition to our entry and something that all students will appreciate in the warmer weather in Term 4. Thank you to those who have made this happen in time for the hot weather.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

As this is the last Junior School newsletter before the holidays, I would like to sincerely thank everyone for your support and understanding as I navigated the change in my role this term and settled into the routines of the Junior School. It has been great to meet with a range of parents and have discussions about how we can continue to enhance your child’s learning and development. As always, it has been an incredible term of all round achievement and success, with students showcasing their skills in the classrooms, in visual and performing arts, and by participating in a variety of sporting events. The Junior School Disco and ‘What I want to be when I grow up’ free dress days were both a hit and it was great to see students enjoying themselves outside of the classroom. I am very proud of each and every one of our students; their commitment to learning and the respect they have for themselves, their peers, adults and our School. Enjoy a safe and restful break. See you in Term 4.

Karen Storey Acting Head of Junior School

Many parents have had the opportunity to meet with their child’s teachers in recent weeks. These meetings were at the request of the teacher and to pass on areas for further development and reinforcement both at home and into Term 4. There is no written report for Term 3. A semester report will be sent home at the end of next term. If you have concerns about any aspect of your child’s learning or development, please do not hesitate to make contact with their class teacher early in Term 4.

During Term 3, I have met with a number of parents, students and staff regarding choices. This is the term where students are usually feeling comfortablein their classrooms, good relationships have been built with their teachers and peers, and they are moving through the year with a sense of I’ vegotthis. However, with this newfound comfortand sense of belonging, there can come a change in the dynamics of friendship groups, as well as the pushing of boundaries. Whilst we understand that in many cases these behaviours are developmental, we continue to have high expectations for all our students. We want our students to continue the year with that strong sense of belonging, by encouraging them to be mindful that their actions (either positive or negative) have consequences. When students push the boundaries, we reinforce the importance of making good choices so they can continue to learn from their mistakes and be the best person they can be.

Children attend school to learn and develop the social skills to participate in: a class of learners; a playtime group; a pairing for project research, a school event. As staff we share the responsibility of helping our students navigate their learning and develop their social skills. We know children learn from having a go, sometimes getting it right, and sometimes making mistakes and getting it wrong. We accept this as a part of the process of learning and growing. Making mistakes means progress is about to be made.

In STEM, we have continued to explore what things are made of and where they come from. We have explored where cheese, chips, flour and sugar come from, made a hypothesis about what lollies are made from only to find out they are made mainly from sugar and flour! Some of us got our hypothesis correct! We are researching our questions on the Internet. We continue to explore where chocolate, chicken nuggets and cotton candy come from.

In Literacy, we have continued to build our text to self connections by thinking about how the story is the same as our experience and different to our experience in some way. We have continued listening for rhyming words. We are listening to hear if they are a rhyming match and we are creating our own rhyming words. When reading we are remembering the elements of a book including the title, words, front and back cover, the characters and setting of the story and where we start to read. We are exploring how we put sounds together to make words. We are building our phonics knowledge to start reading words by ourselves. Our leather keyring that we made for Father’s Day was a great learning opportunity to put sounds together to create the word ‘Dad’.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about simple patterns. We have created simple colour patterns and simple object patterns, explored patterns in our environment including line patterns zigzag, bounce and wavy lines (up and down). Drawing these are also good practice for fine motor control. We continue to practice identifying our numbers from zero to ten, our ability to count one object at a time and place our numbers in the correct order.

In Health, we have been exploring safe and unsafe behaviours. We are thinking about why they are safe and unsafe. We met a new friend called Seemore Safety who needed our help to find ways his friends could be more safe in their environment, including wearing a helmet when riding a bike, wearing a hat and sunscreen when outside in the sun and making sure we look for dangers if we are not wearing shoes.

In The Arts, we have begun to explore dance. We are using different parts of our bodies to move to the beat in our songs. We are also discovering that dance is like telling a story. Our dance stories have been about an acorn growing and a bullfrog in a pond. We are thinking about how we can tell a story using our bodies. We have explored mixing paint. We started with primary colours, then we mixed them together to create new colours. We continue to explore the medium of mixing colour and using our imaginations to create.

In Geography, we have been looking at the features of different natural environments like the desert, beach, bush and rainforest environments. It has been wonderful to see the children using this new knowledge to build natural environments in their play using a variety of our open ended resources. We are seeing some wonderful rainforests with puddles, waterfalls, grass, plants and trees. The children are including their knowledge from history by adding Indigenous Australians and creating mia mias for them to live in and go hunting for food. We have expanded our thinking to built environments, and places that have been built by mankind. We thought about the natural and build environments in our town, Charters Towers. We built a train track and added built environments including a helipad, airstrip, post office and farm. We have continued our learning about the environment by looking at changes in the natural environment, especially the weather. We are thinking about what we see in the atmosphere and how this changes. We are beginning to explore how we can protect our environment.

In Science we have enjoyed being weather watchers, observing and recording the weather. We have also looked at how the weather effects what we wear and the activities we might do. Art has been lots of fun as we created our farm dioramas. We focused on a different element each Friday to add to our diorama. I am so proud of their final product, and the class enjoyed sharing these on assembly.

I cannot wait to see the places we continue to go as we journey into Term 4!

Mrs Osbaldiston and Mrs Fittock

In English, we have been learning all about rhyming words. We have read lots of stories and listened to many songs. We even created our own rhyming book which the students were proud to share on assembly. Earlier in the term we had a ‘rhyme crime’ where classroom items were taken, and the students had to figure out what was missing by deciphering a rhyme clue. We had so much fun and we found all the missing items! It has been amazing to see growth in students’ reading and writing. They are each working so hard. I am so proud of how far they’ve come this term. Digital Technology has been fun this term. The children can log on to the laptops with ease and open a word document as well as practice their typing on our typing program. They can also use Literacy Planet as a tool to learn phonics and sight words.

Oh, the places we have gone this term! It has flown by, and I have loved seeing how much students have learnt over the term.

Teen numbers have been the focus of Mathematics. We have been working very hard on recognising these numbers. The children have also loved comparing objects by how much they hold using the terms ‘holds more than’ or ‘holds less than’. We have had fun using coloured water, sand and blocks to help with our comparisons.

We loved learning about Dreamtime Stories. I have enjoyed the discussions that these bring about whether they are true or not. We have looked at how the birds got their colours, about the cocky, crow and the hawk and why they live the way they do. Our favourite story so far has to be How the Kangaroo Got It’s Tail. We modelled and practised our retelling with this story using story maps. There were giggles when the small, grey kangaroo tricked the big, brown kangaroo into finding spiders and not sugarbag (bush honey). The biggest laughs came when the two kangaroos fought with sticks and then threw their sticks at each other, landing the sticks in their bottoms! This week we presented our retells to the class and shared a painting of our favourite part.

Our Geography unit is moving on to look at how we can care for special places. We know the different landscapes, such as constructed, managed and natural and we are thinking about what we can do in each of these to look after them. They all have different needs.

In Maths we have been working on half past time and being able to read and write in in both analogue and digital time. So much of our Maths has looked like playing rather than learning, however, we can measure length and capacity, give great directions and find locations. To finish off our unit we will be used Cubetto and coded him with directions to set locations on his mat.

Year 1 finished this term with a visit from our local Fire Fighters who taught us about Fire Safety. We learnt about good and bad fires and the difference between toys and tools. Year 1 now know what to do if we catch on fire; "Stop, drop and roll!" and what to do if we have a house fire. We need to yell "Fire, fire, fire!" and then "Get down low and go, go, go!" The best part of our visit was seeing the lights and hearing the siren as they departed.

We have come to the end of our Science unit and discussed the differences and similarities between photos of different landscapes. The different pictures may show different seasons, day or night or even weather.

Drama…..drama drama….. This term in Drama, the students have studied the elements of role and situation. They have used movement, voice and facial expression to portray different characters from familiar picture books. They loved playing a range of warm up games and worked co operatively to complete small drama challenges. Our actors and actresses worked enthusiastically to practice their performance pieces using their chosen scripts of the characters Pig, Trevor, the Gingerbread Girl, the Stinky Cheese Man, Ninja-rella and many more. I can’t wait to see them perform their dramatic artworks for the rest of their peers. I am sure they will be full of DRAMA!

Science investigations have involved the children making and testing parachutes, playing games to analyse the effect of the strength of a force, testing objects on different surfaces and even creating a wind powered car. Students have explored simple ideas of gravity, friction and air resistance and have begun to understand how motion is altered by these forces at work. They have made predictions, created investigation questions, tested ideas and recorded observations in labelled diagrams. Science is certainly busy, but so much fun!

The students have extended their knowledge of 2D shapes and 3D shapes. They have examined their features and quantified their faces, edges and corners. To consolidate their learning, the children had great fun creating their own shape models using a variety of materials. Many were very excited to begin learning the concept of multiplication. They have learnt that multiplication is the same as adding equal groups and have started representing the concept in a variety of ways through repeated addition, groups of, rows and arrays and number sentences using the multiplication sign. Once they have mastered this skill, they will then move onto the inverse operation of division. Maths is challenging, but also a lot of fun.

Mathematics Mania

Character comparisons have continued in Year 2, with the children reading and giggling over the many antics of Pig and Trevor in the ‘Pig the Pug’ picture book series. They have completed character profiles by thinking about each character’s thoughts, feelings and actions and have made deeper connections by using text evidence to inference about their unique qualities. The students quickly realised that Trevor and Pig are quite opposite in every way, even down to the way they dress up and celebrate Halloween! The students have chosen their favourite character and composed a text to argue and explain why their character is simply the best. It is no wonder that most have chosen Trevor to be their favourite, while a few daring students have put their thinking caps on to create a compelling case to support Pig the Pug. Wow! I can’t wait to see their closing arguments! Who is your favourite? Read the comparing and contrasting Venn diagram ideas brainstormed by the children to help you decide.

English Entertainment Continued

In Science we continued to investigate night and day and the impact this has on our planet, Earth. We wanted to know how the sun effected our shadows throughout the day, so each hour we went outside to measure the length and direction of the shadow. The Superstars discovered that as the earth rotates, the shadows change length and direction.

In Design and Technology, we have created our traps to catch that pesky Mr Fox! Although, this has not been without some challenges. We have found that trying to get the trap door to close and finding ways to join two different materials together to be the hardest parts of all. But we have kept a positive mindset and have refused to give up which has led to some very interesting designs and creations. We now need to test our trap to make sure it meets our design challenge. We will then use these traps for our media arts stop motion task. We have created a story board of how we want our story of trapping Mr Fox to look. The Superstars will now be taking many photos to create a short video that demonstrates how their trap works.

In English, we have been preparing our dramatic skills to perform our spoken procedures. We need to pretend to be one of the characters from this terms story ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ to put on a cooking show where we show others how to make either a fantastic feast or apple cider. The All Stars have been sharing with their friends to make sure they are using their BOLD speaking skills which stands for Body Language, Organisation, Language and Delivery.

FREE DRESS DAY

I am so proud of the Year 3 Superstars’ effort this term and cannot wait for more wonderful learning together in Term 4!

In Mathematics, we have explored measurement including capacity (L, ml), mass (g, kg) and length (mm, cm, m, km). We discovered something VERY interesting to help us remember our conversions Did you know that ‘centi’ is derived from the Latin ‘hundred’? Did you know that ‘kilo’ is derived from Greek ‘thousand’? Did you know that ‘milli’ is derived from Latin ‘thousand’? This really helped us to remember that there are 1000g in a kilogram, 1000ml in a Litre and 100cm in a metre.

WHAT I WANT TO BE WHEN I GROW

The Year 3 Superstars have had a very busy term! We had such a fantastic time performing at the Eisteddfod with Year 4! All the hard work and practice paid off as we earned first place! We are all so proud of what we achieved. Learning and listening to all of this poetry has really set us up for our poetry unit next term.

UP...

Junior School Direct 07 4788 2242 Fax: 07 4787 3049 Email: juniorschool@allsouls.qld.edu.au News from Year 4 and Mrs Turner

This has been a very busy term with so many of our students involved in a variety of events. Congratulations to all students who have participated in cultural and sporting events over the term. Miss Miliauskas and I enjoyed working with Year 3 and Year 4 students this term on preparing our poem for the Eisteddfod. They did an amazing job and made us all very proud!

Over the last two weeks, students have been enjoying hearing book recommendations from classmates. There has been a mixture of novels, favourite picture books, information texts and a cookbook! This has promoted interest in other authors and book series with children trying some books they haven’t come across before. It has been not only wonderful to see the promotion of reading from the students, but to also see them using feedback to improve their speaking presentations skills and building further confidence to speak in front of an audience.

As we finished our African sunsets in Visual Arts, we have moved onto paper molas, based on a traditional artwork from South America. These can be very fiddly and required concentration, fine motor skills and patience as pieces are cut to the correct size and shape. We will soon have a wonderfully decorated room with these new additions. Recently, we completed our Digital Technology task, which resulted in finding out the most common colour smartie in the small packets. Data was collected individually at first, smarties were then eaten, and we collated all the data to answer the question. Students were able to create tables, enter data, use formulas and create a variety of graphs to represent their findings. They were able to do this very independently using all of their newly developed skills. So which colour was the most common? Purple!

As we wrap up another term, I wish all our students and families a happy break. I can’t quite believe the final term of this year is just around the corner. Happy holidays and happy reading to my students!

In Geography, students are now researching a country in Africa. They are studying the biome and how plants and animals have adapted to survive there. They are reading and summarising information from graphs and tables about rainfall and temperatures throughout the year. Once they have completed and presented their research, they will compare their information with that of another country with a different biome. Research and note taking skills are being developed as well as their presentation skills by creating a PowerPoint to share their newfound knowledge.

In English, students interpreted and analysed the poem ‘The Spider and The Fly’. As a class, we discussed lots of interesting opinions and points of view about the story of the poem and the underlying lesson don’t listen to flattering words. Students were excited to flip the poem and turn it into a multimodal narrative. They let their imagination run wild and applied their knowledge of figurative language, to tell the story in an engaging and fun way.

Term 3 has come and gone with lightning speed, but the learning in Year 5 shows no signs of slowing down. In Science this term, students studied how light travels. We enjoyed performing several experiments to test and prove scientific predictions while understanding the many variables involved when it comes to light experiments. The shadow puppet experiment was a unanimous favourite among the Year 5 cohort as students saw firsthand how light changes when opaque objects block part of a light source. Students relished the challenge of creating a light maze using a shoebox, torch, and mirrors as their final assessment task.

Studying and performing the elements of a melodrama has been the perfect way to end the busy term. Students have been experimenting with exaggerated voice and movements as they embody damsel, villain and hero characters. It’s been particularly entertaining to see some villain voices emerge outside of drama lessons. As a class we’ve all enjoyed the final performances.

In Mathematics, we deep dived into every element of fractions including how they relate to everyday life. Pizza anyone? In addition to fraction fun, students also used their critical thinking skills to find angles in their world. We learned how much precision is required when drawing and measuring angles.

Thursday started with a special visit to Government House. We loved seeing the Governor General’s special car and walking around the grounds. The President of East Timor was due to arrive not long after our visit, so the staff were busy preparing the House to welcome him. We then moved on to the High Court and sat in one of the three special chambers. The court chambers were interesting to observe as they had some creative designs on the walls and the ceiling. Our next stop was the National Library. There were so many items and collections to observe. We saw Captain Cook’s writing desk and we were surprised to learn that a tube system was originally used when someone wanted to borrow a book. After the Library we ventured over to the National Museum of Australia, then onto our Lego session and we ended the night with Mr Lee leading a great trivia session as we chilled out in the common room of our Friday, accommodation.ourlastday, was a memorable day for us all. We woke up to the sad news that Queen Elizabeth II had passed away overnight. We knew our day was going to be different as we experienced this momentous occasion in Canberra. We started our day at the Royal Australian Mint and were lucky enough to get a freshly minted $1 coin on this special day. This is a coin we will treasure forever. We then travelled to the National Capital Exhibition where we learnt about how Canberra was established and built and the reasons why it is laid out the way it is today. We had a quick sight seeing tour at Mt Ainslie lookout and then spent some time at the Museum of Australian Democracy which is in one half of Old Parliament House. We got to sit in the original House of Representatives and see the outfits that were worn back in the original days of Parliament. Our last learning tour of the trip was at the Electoral Education Centre which was inside the other half of Old Parliament House. We learnt how the voting process works and we got to see the voting results of our last election for the Kennedy region. Our last evening in Canberra finished with an awesome adventure at rock climbing. There were some very brave climbers as they ventured all the way to the top of some very difficult walls.

Year 6 News from Miss Clarke

The highlights from our first day included the Bonsai Collection at the National Arboretum, interacting with the activities and displays at Questacon, and seeing real props from the Crocodile Dundee and Mad Max movies at the National Film and Sound Archives. We then observed the real Australian Constitution at the National Archives, and saw the massive snakes and creepy crawly reptiles at the Canberra Reptile Zoo. We learnt very quickly that some teachers are not fans of snakes at all!

Our trip to Canberra was amazing! Our bus trip into Townsville was buzzing with excitement and anticipation, and even some nerves as it was the first time some of us were going on a plane! Every day in Canberra was filled with exciting experiences and places to visit. We were so lucky that our bus driver, J.D, was knowledgeable about everything in Canberra so each bus trip was filled with information and stories. Our accommodation was spacious, the beds were really comfortable, and there was so much yummy food every day. Our bellies have never been so full!

Junior School Direct 07 4788 2242 Fax: 07 4787 3049 Email: juniorschool@allsouls.qld.edu.au

continued with our re-routed trip back to Townsville. We are so thankful that QANTAS staff in Canberra worked extra hard to put us on a new flight as maintenance work on our aircraft meant we were not going to make our planned connection in Melbourne. A yummy meal of Red Rooster at Brisbane Airport meant we were able to finish our journey with full bellies, which helped some of us get some sleep on the last flight home. Our trip to Canberra was fantastic. Every day had so many memorable moments and new information that helped us understand our curriculum even further and develop a better understanding about Australia’s democracy and history. It was a trip that we will never forget and one that we’ll be talking about for a long time to come.

On Friday afternoon we were privileged to attend the 96 gun salute for Queen Elizabeth II on the front lawn of Parliament House. We were honoured to be able to attend this ceremony and witness something incredible. This is a moment that we will never forget and the significance of the moment will be something we will realise as we grow Ourolder.adventures

The second day brought some memorable moments as we got to watch the Guards practise one of their marches at the Australian War Memorial and we listened to some interesting stories about Australian soldiers during World War I. We saw some interesting memorials as we drove along ANZAC Parade and learnt why Parliament House and the Australian War Memorial are in a straight line with each other. We then headed over to the CSIRO where we were challenged to explore the exhibits and learn about the life changing inventions and discoveries that have been made at the CSIRO. Our next stop was Parliament House. This was a great experience. We started with a role play about how a Bill is passed through government and heard some very interesting ideas and rebuttals from each other. We sat in the observation decks for the Senate and the House of Representatives. We heard some of the debates and discussions going on about current policies and issues and we just missed out on observing a real vote taking place in the Senate. We finished our visit by checking out the massive LEGO replica of Parliament House. Mr Lee arrived in Canberra to join us on our final venture of the evening, ice skating. Many crashes and bruises filled the night and we learnt that we have some very talented skaters in Year 6.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday and I hope the students use the time to catch up on some much deserved rest after their big Canberra adventure.

Congratulations to Lexi Butler who has made the Northern 12 Years Girls Rugby League team.

We have also been fortunate to have School Vice Captain Olivia Titley assist in a few of our Physical Education lessons as part of her certificate IV in Fitness. The students have loved learning new games and being challenged by Miss Titley.

The Inter School Rugby League team had their first game a few weeks ago against a combined Blackheath Thornburgh College, Millchester State School and Central State School team. Mrs Jo Butler has been training the team and supported all the players to have a fun afternoon of Rugby League.

Congratulations to the following students who have made the Charters Towers team for the following sports.

Specific results that have been provided by the team managers and Northern Track and Field organisers are as follows.

Jack Power qualified for the 11 Years Boys 100m Final and came 7th in the final. He also finished in a 2nd place tie in 11 Years Boys High Jump

In our Health and Physical Education lessons we have been completing assessments and focusing on strategic play in soccer. Some students are starting to position themselves effectively to support their team in defence and offence. We have finished the term with a few fun games that were designed to focus on fundamental skills and team play.

Helen Walsh came 4th in the 12 Years Girls 800m event

Looking ahead… As Term 3 draws to a close we have started looking ahead to Term 4. We will resume swimming and have our hotly contested Inter-House Swimming Carnival on Friday, 4 November along with the Inter-School Swimming Carnival on Friday, 11 November. In the lead up to these carnivals there will be swimming training available to students 8 12 Years and then only 9 12 Years for the Inter School Carnival. Information regarding these training sessions will be made available in Term 4.
