Hallelujah, it’s Mountain Fair By Jane Bachrach

uby Kimberly and Beda Calhoun let their hair down this Monday after loading up their bicycles with more than 200 pounds of fruit and pedaling it over McClure Pass from Paonia, Colo., to Carbondale. The fruit will be used this weekend to make smoothies at the Carbondale Mountain Fair. Neither Ruby nor Beda are bike riders, but their desire to respect the environment carried them through the 59-mile journey. These two women are the brains and bodies behind The Pedal Palace at Mountain Fair, where they prepare smoothies using organic local fruit and their own energy. They blend the smoothies by pedaling a stationery bicycle with a blender attached. Ruby and Beda are among the thousands who will gather for the 38th annual Carbondale Mountain Fair that kicks off at 4 p.m. Friday with the ceremonial blessing and annual Mother of All Drum Circles. The threeday arts/crafts and music festival will be packed with live music, kids’ activities, competitions, visual arts and crafts, and more.
The jam tent Don’t expect to find any jars of homemade strawberry, grape or apricot in this jam tent that will be located next to a large shade tree at the Seventh Street entrance to the park. However, if you like to jam and listen to music, you’re in luck. The jam tent is new this year. According to Fair Director Amy Kimberly, “jams will be part of the fair forever now.” In fact, the hope is to have music workshops in the jam tent starting next year, she added. “This is the first year for the tent and we’re going to expand,” she said. There will be some instruments there but Kimberly encourages people to bring their own. “Anyone who wants to jam can,” she said. Sunday afternoon will feature a final jam to cap off the inaugural year, and Kimberly said she’s going to try to persuade musicians from the Boulder Acoustic Society and other Mountain Fair performers to join the jam finale.
Rising Stars series

The Rising Stars series is also a new feature at the fair. It starts at 12:20 p.m. on Saturday and features budding young musicians, including Marilyn Lindquist, who made quite an impression on Kimberly when mentor Nelson Oldham of The Redtones brought her in to KDNK to sing live on the air. The fair runs Friday through Sunday, July 24-26, at Sopris Park and also features nationally touring acts throughout the weekend.
