From the Publisher Over the last few years, I have heard much debate amongst old-school Nashvillians about whether Nashville’s changes over the previous two decades or so have been for the good or the bad. Although I consider myself a native Nashvillian, I am somewhat of a hybrid. My parents and I moved from Chicago to Nashville in 1965 when I was six. The lens through which I saw Nashville was filtered by my Mother’s culture shock, moving to the comparatively insular Nashville. Nonetheless, she eventually came to love Nashville. After receiving my MBA from Vanderbilt, I moved to New York City in 1986, where I worked, got married, and had my two sons before we returned to the Athens of the South in 2002. The one constant in the world is change. I believe one should embrace change while remembering what was great about the past. Some of the aspects of old Nashville that I appreciated were the slower pace, lack of traffic issues, and old Southern culture, which is hard to articulate unless you came from the region. Hospitality, honesty, and a gentile approach to life are vital tenets of being Southern. It was also such a small community where everyone knew each other. Some of the little things that I miss about that era are the Moon Drug Store and Wilson Quick Pharmacy lunch counters in Belle Meade, the Hippodrome roller rink, the brownstones on West End, and the countryside being just on the outskirts of the city. I remember growing up that there were limited dining options, but I didn’t know any better back then. Although we had Nero’s Cactus Canyon and Jimmy Kelly’s for steaks, looking back, Belle Meade Cafeteria and the Cross Keys were not my favorite culinary experiences. Being a hardcore rock and roll fan, I was frustrated that many of my favorite acts (Paul McCartney & Wings, for instance) would skip Nashville. Back then, our primary performance venue was the Municipal Auditorium. There were no professional sports to watch live, with the closest thing being Vanderbilt football and basketball. There was very little reason to go downtown after hours; Lower Broad hosted peepshows, pawnshops, and real dive bars. There was very little in the visual arts except for the occasional traveling exhibit at Cheekwood (Cheekwood is on fire these days. Check out our article on the Chihuly exhibit in our Nov/Dec 2020 issue). Sure, the new Music City has its share of issues. I think everyone will agree that the traffic situation has gotten out of hand, although still not nearly as punishing as Atlanta’s. Property values are increasing at an astronomical rate which could be good or bad depending on your circumstances. For me, I’ve lived in my current house for 19 years and don’t plan on moving anytime soon, so this means ever-increasing property taxes. Becoming a big city brings big-city problems; crime has increased significantly over the years, the likes of which I never saw growing up here. I miss some of the old-fashioned Southern charm; however, with the influx of different people and cultures, Nashville has become much more cosmopolitan with some wonderful things those new folks have brought. For me, the new Nashville has many of the things that I came to love about New York and other large metropolises. Our culinary scene has exploded and continues to do so sometimes at the expense of old favorites (we miss you, F. Scott’s and Rotier’s). We love Yolan (see Jan/Feb 2021), Chauhan, and anything from Sean Brock and can’t wait for Jean-Georges Vongerichten to revamp the Capitol Grille at The Hermitage this fall. With Bridgestone Arena and Nissan Stadium, we now have two professional sports teams and soccer is on the horizon. Music City has many music venues beyond the Municipal Auditorium, from the renovated Ryman, the Ascend Amphitheatre, City Winery, 3rd and Lindsey, and the Cannery, just to name a few. Now, more concerts come to town than I have the time or the money to attend. With our Frist Art Museum, Cheekwood, OZ Arts, and art galleries that continue to open, Nashville now has a dynamic and varied art scene (read about the art at The Joseph on page 15). TPAC celebrates its 40th year, and the Symphony, Ballet, and Opera are poised to perform in front of eager local audiences. We all know what a tourist destination Lower Broad has become; however, I, like many of my friends, only “do” Lower Broad when we have out-of-town guests (just like we did with attractions in NYC). Nashville has so much to offer both locals and guests; I suppose it’s our unique modern brand of Southern hospitality, and we should be proud of that. William Arthur Ward, an often-quoted 20th-century writer of inspirational maxims, once said, “The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.” Change is inevitable. Embrace what is right about the new Nashville, adjust to handle its challenges, and appreciate its past.

CONTEMPORARY COOL

A Luxury Hotel and Fine Dining are only part of the story of The Joseph Written by Melissa Mahanes / Photos by Eric Laignel Nashville is so fortunate to have the spectacular Joseph Hotel added to our repertoire of places to stay and play in Music City. What lies beyond the living wall and cobblestones as you enter from Korean Veterans Boulevard is so much more than a stunning 279-room hotel. It is a gloriously appointed group of spaces with one of Nashville’s finest eateries (we told you all about Yolan in our Jan/Feb issue), a breathtaking rooftop bar and pool, and houses a world-class art collection. The Pizzuti’s collection began with Ann and Ron Pizzuti’s 1972 trip to Paris, where they were particularly captivated by Frank Stella’s art. Starting with the purchase of a $900 work by Karel Appel at a Columbus gallery paid for in installments, a passion would grow over the next three decades into a family collection of nearly 2,400 sculptures, paintings, and works on paper with an emphasis on established masters and emerging talents. In 2013, the Pizzuti Collection became a cornerstone of the Columbus

Museum of Art, where the Pizzutis supervised the renovation of a building in the Short North neighborhood of Columbus. They also gifted access to their collection for exhibitions in the museum and donated several additional works to the CMA. The Joseph in Nashville is the second Pizzuti hotel (the first is Le Meridien Columbus, The Joseph) to benefit from the family’s keen collecting eye and is a gift to the community much as The Pizzuti Collection is to Columbus. They want to convey the message that living around art and experiencing it does not have to be intimidating. Joel Pizzuti is carrying on his family passion for art by placing over 1,000 works of art at The Joseph that have been meticulously selected from the family’s private collection as well as collaborations with local artists (known as The Tennessee Portfolio). Pizzuti collaborated with local artists on the Tennessee Portfolio to give The Joseph its own dose of Music City flair.

Allow me to be your docent and point out some of the notable items and show you how Joel and his family have curated a dynamic and sophisticated haven of art in Downtown Nashville. Your art tour begins as you pull into the Porte Cochère with living green walls and a bright blue rolled steel and enamel Hank Willis Thomas sculpture that resembles a comic book speech bubble. As you await your valet, a sizeable screen displays a constantly rolling group of video installations. On my last visit, I was taken with a video by Miler Lagos entitled “Home”—a man contentedly floating and fishing atop a small water tower in the middle of the ocean. Even the door handles at the entrance are commissioned works of art: New York sculptor Rob Wynne created playful bronze teardrops to welcome you into the Lobby. Wynne also designed the door handles at the entrance to The Pizzuti Collection in Columbus. The Lobby is a feast for the eyes and full of details intended, as Pizzuti explains, “to stimulate both emotionally and intellectually”. 16 slmag.net

Lobby: Marcel Wanders “Dysmorphophobia 3”, 2015

The artworks were installed after the hotel was designed and built, and the result is perfection at every turn. The Joseph is comfortable and sophisticated and is resplendent with clever design details. The Lobby’s custom-loomed carpets are a nod to country music costume designer Nudie with its appliqued flower motif. The hardware in the Guest Rooms have been modeled after Gibson Les Paul guitar volume knobs. Above the custom-designed Lucchese hand-tooled front desk is a striking fired clay swirl by California ceramicist Brie Ruais, who uses the equivalent amount of clay to match her body weight and manipulates her shapes organically. The front of the Lobby houses two colorful abstract works by recently deceased Rhode Island artist Jackie Saccoccio that are reminiscent of Jackson Pollock and provides a splash of color to the sleek entrance. The open Lobby Bar and Yolan restaurant are equally graced with video installations, ceiling and wall art. These play artfully with giant wheels of Parmigiano-Reggiano and the exposed wine cellar in Yolan.

The Eighth Floor houses the function and meeting rooms and a grand exhibition space that currently houses Minneapolisborn artist Alec Soth. His series “Songbook” features large-scale black and white photographs from his road trips across the United States, and the subjects are part journalistic and part random encounter. This space will eventually rotate with new art installations, and with The Joseph’s collaboration with the Nashville Symphony, it will hold salon-style musical experiences. Pizzuti tells us the acoustics are incredible. Your tour continues on the 20th Floor that houses the Spa, Fitness Center, Denim Bar and Pool, and spectacular views. The Rose Spa has a selection of works by British artist Melanie Goemans of dream-like depictions of flowers that mesh perfectly with the amazing fragrance wafting from the signature “Rose” candle created in collaboration with Nashville-based 27.9. 20 slmag.net

The Fitness Center has floor-to-ceiling windows and features funky black and white works by Ukrainian artist Marta Vovk. She has taken logos from athletic brands Nike, Adidas, and Puma and distorted them in a psychedelic fashion. The rooftop Denim Bar and the Pool area are cool spots to hang out and view a Joel Pizzutidesigned custom neon sign inspired by a haiku he wrote on gluttony: “Seek only pleasure/Time evaporates quickly/Leaves an empty heart.” In true gallery-style, Pizzuti intends to label artworks, and employees of The Joseph are receiving docent training so they are prepared to answer questions visitors should have about the art and fine details throughout the hotel. From beginning to end, there are so many enjoyable visual aspects to The Joseph. I hope I have piqued your interest—visit soon and enjoy your own art adventure. sl The Joseph, a Luxury Collection Hotel, 401 Korean Veterans Boulevard,Nashville, TN 37203, (615) 248-1990, www.marriott.com/luxury/nashville

UP & AWAY With a new FBO and an expanded runway

at the Clark County Regional Airport, PrivateFlite Aviation is ideally positioned to become a leader in bespoke charter flight services. Written by Bridget Williams / Photos by Tony Bailey Todd Strause still gets a twinkle in his eye when he recalls his first time flying private. The bonus of being a "right seat" passenger, which allowed him to watch the pilot in action, was enough to prompt him to enroll in flight school as soon as he returned home. "I was hooked," said Strause. Today, his aviation holdings include a few jet aircraft; PrivateFlite Aviation, a charter flight management company; and Aircraft Specialists, a maintenance, storage, and fueling facility with a dedicated FBO at the Clark County Regional Airport. More than a decade later, this multi-faceted entrepreneur readily admits to still being fascinated by aircraft and the privilege of private flight. "I could sit in our lobby and watch jets take off and land all day." Strause's customer service-centric approach aims to impart a similar level of giddiness to each of his clients, whether it's their first or 100th flight. According to Strause, having charter, maintenance, and FBO (fixed-base operation) services under one umbrella is rare in the aviation industry and a particular boon for clients interested in putting their aircraft into the charter pool. Just 10 minutes north of Louisville, PrivateFlite's home base is a newly opened 22,600 22 slmag.net

square-foot facility boasting a bevy of bells and whistles such as a complete kitchen with complimentary snacks and beverages, a comfortable lounge area with floor-to-ceiling windows looking over the 7,000-foot runway, a large conference room, a pilot's lounge, and modern sparkling bathrooms. "It's all about doing the little things just a little better than everyone else," said Strause. Thinking post-pandemic, the FBO's 18,200 square-foot hangar with 28-foot doors, ample windows, and high-tech LED lighting will be an ideal site for hosting events. With only roughly half of the 15 acres they lease at the airport currently developed, plans are already underway to build another new hangar to accommodate their burgeoning business. More design element than amenity, a handsome lighted display case just inside the entry stops most visitors in their tracks. Stocked with some of the best bottles from Strause's burgeoning bourbon collection, his zeal as a rare spirit collector is nearly on par with his passion for aviation. Strause said he only began acquiring Kentucky's native spirit about five years ago, and since then has relished in the sport of attaining hard-to-get bottles. "Out of

town guests and locals who come through the door want to know the stories behind the bottles and which one is my favorite," said Strause, who added that it's a point of pride as a Kentuckian to help promote the Bourbon Trail. PrivateFlite operates on a 24/7/365 basis, due in part to contracts with large corporations for flights. With time being of the essence, PrivateFlite can be wheels up within two hours of receiving a call, and this level of responsiveness is available to all of their clients. Already a successful business owner in automotive marketing when he took on this endeavor, Strause admitted to being initially overwhelmed by his foray into the aviation industry. Laying out his company's core values helped hone his vision. "Because this is my passion, everything is done the right way," he explained. "Our goal is to be the best in the region at what we do by providing the ultimate client experience." This elevated experience includes minding the minutiae, such as ensuring clients' favorite beverages and snacks are available on the flight, handling baggage, washing clients' car while they're away, and providing high-end tailored concierge services.

Trust and transparency are two touchstones that Strause and Kelly Lurz, general manager of PrivateFlite Aviation and Aircraft Specialists, continually stress during a conversation. Early on as a new aircraft owner, Strause admits to "not knowing what he didn't know," a potentially expensive predicament he wants to help other owners navigate. "We have taken on a consultant approach for aircraft owners and want to be a reliable resource and partner with them," he said. For charter clients, Lurz says that their upfront pricing models are very competitive with Jet card companies. "The biggest difference is that we create personal relationships with our clients, and they are not treated as just a number," explained Lurz. PrivateFlite's growing regional footprint and national network of operators means they are available to clients all over the country, and they can provide competitively-priced flights for any destination. Strause refers to flying private as a "time machine." "Our clients are busy, and flying private offers them tremendous time savings to maximize their business and personal time," he explained. "Being home every night after a three-city tour in one day has a high value for our clients." sl

PARIS, MY

Nashville eagerly awaits Celebrating April in Paris with Zang Toi Written by Melissa Mahanes/Photos by Ashley Hylbert, Drawings by Zang Toi

The eagerly anticipated 2021 Fashion Show is taking place on Wednesday, April 28th, at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center! After the disappointment of having to cancel last year’s event, Chairmen Angela Bostelman and Sarah Reisner and Executive Chairman Sandra Lipman are thrilled to announce that Zang Toi will be returning to showcase his fabulous Fall 2021 collection presented by Gus Mayer. They are also excited to announce the 2021 Honorary Chairs, Barbara Bovender, Barbara Burns, and Ashley Rosen.

Zang Toi, the Malaysian-born and New York-based designer is no stranger to Nashville. He was scheduled to be the designer for last year’s Fashion Show and has graciously agreed to return this year. He was also the featured designer for the Symphony Fashion Show more than twenty years ago when his dear friend Janice Elliott Morgan of Gus Mayer was a Chairman of the event. She continues to host Zang when he visits Nashville and was instrumental in organizing our cover shoot.

The House of Toi was established in New York in 1989 by the Parsons School of Design graduate. Toi has dressed Hollywood celebrities such as Sharon Stone, Kirstie Alley, Patti LaBelle (she wore one of his designs to perform for the Obamas at The White House), and Eva Longoria, to name a few. He has also created luxurious wardrobes for philanthropists and royalty, including Melinda Gates and Saudi Princess Haifa Bandar Al Saud.

SOME HINTS FROM BRUCE PITTMAN... “I’m thrilled and humbled to be a part of the Symphony Spring Fashion Show featuring renowned designer Zang Toi,” says event designer Bruce Pittman. “Zang’s flair for exquisite fashion, combined with his outstanding talent to ‘wow’ audiences with his classic yet fun look, is the perfect fit to showcase his 2021 line at this year’s Paris-themed event.” Bruce adds, “Incorporating Zang’s bold and eye-catching fashion in our event design was a fun and rewarding experience. Using one of the show’s signature colors, we designed a ‘red carpet’ entrance that leads to the grand lobby entrance featuring a larger-than-life 13-foot floral accented Eiffel Tower. This provides the ideal setting for show-stopping photo opportunities that truly capture the event’s ‘Paris, My ’ theme.” “The model entrance is classic, featuring Zang’s unique logo constructed with florals and greens. This beautiful 12-foot logo truly sets the stage for the classic, unique, and fun-filledatmosphere of the event,” adds Bruce.

The inspiration for this year’s show is Paris, My . Toi is a dedicated Francophile and has been quoted saying, “Sometimes I fly there overnight and visit for twenty-four hours, I stay in my favorite hotel, the classic Hotel Ritz on the Place Vendôme, dine at Le Grand Véfour, and come right back home again!” Toi promises a showing inspired by “the GORGEOUS memories of my many trips to Paris... The runway show will feature GORGEOUS and GLAMOROUS looks in shades of Paris Pink, French Lavender, and Marie Antoinette Yellow, paired with black, charcoal, and grey. I love going back to Nashville again and again...it is a love affair that started 28 years ago, and it remains stronger than ever.” The Symphony Fashion Show will be a socially distanced, in-person affair for 150 Patrons, including Zang’s stunning runway collection, a fabulous musical headliner (or two!) performances by Nashville Symphony musicians, and Accelerando training program students. The event will also be live-streamed in a very special “La Mode à la Maison” (Fashion at Home) for virtual ticket holders. They intend to provide an innovative, safe and unforgettable experience for their premium supporters. The Nashville Symphony has partnered with HCA Healthcare/TriStar Health to serve as the “Official Health and Safety Partner” for the Symphony to deliver a safe and enriching experience for all involved. They are working on creative ideas to engage both virtual and in-person attendees in the MAGIC of the evening. Toi writes, “Not even a pandemic lockdown can stop me from creating a GORGEOUS collection to share with my GORGEOUS, loyal ladies.” This year, celebrating “April in Paris” in Nashville will be a breath of fresh air and will mark the triumphant return of Zang Toi and guests to the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Magnifique. sl Says Bruce, “Safety is a top priority with all guests socially distanced this year and seated at tables in the concert hall facing the runway. This ensures a safe, enjoyable evening for all guests. Each guest’s table will be draped in white, with lights illuminating beneath the table emitting a soft glow to add to the festive ambiance of the evening. And it doesn’t stop there. Florals at each table will be set low and long, accentuating color-blocked arrangements showcasing the event’s bold pink, lavender and yellow colors.” “The ‘Paris, My ’ theme is carried through right to each guest as they will enjoy a French-themed charcuterie box for dinner. We explored some fun color and branding ideas for the box, as well as the actual food to tie into the theme. This fun design aspect was new for us and a project we truly enjoyed,” adds Bruce. “I also want to give a big shoutout to the event’s florist LMA Designs and the event props and drape company TN Event Designs,” notes Bruce. “Their excellent floral and prop expertise created an added dimension in pulling the Symphony Spring Fashion Show all together.”

DOING WHAT YOU LOVE Written by Craig Kaminer

While browsing iconic department stores and boutiques in New York during the height of the pandemic, it was clear the trend of luxury sneakers is still hot and here to stay. The handmade Italian fashion footwear line Golden Goose best reflects how people are living, working, commuting, and dressing now and for the foreseeable future. The line of distressed sneakers and bags started as a passion project of founders Francesca Rinaldo and Alessandro Gallo, a couple from Venice who were outsiders to the world of fashion. Since its inception in 2000, it has grown from a company of $20 million in sales to more than $320 million in 2020. Golden Goose expects to grow another 35 percent in 2021 and has attracted private equity from Permira, a British global investment firm, and fashion industry superstars Silvio Campara to serve as CEO and Maureen Chiquet as Chairwoman to build the global brand. Although competing with the likes of Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci and Christian Louboutin, Golden Goose has emerged as a distinctively excellent Italian brand inspired by vintage fashion --

initially because the founders didn’t have the money to buy new luxury goods. Shoe prices start at $500 for men, women, and kids. While expensive, they are roughly half the price of other luxury brand sneakers. In a world of fashion sameness, Golden Goose customers are as original as the brand; seeking creativity, authenticity and relevance to make a personal statement and reinforce the uniqueness of their identities. According to Silvio, “Everything we do at Golden Goose goes against what I learned before I came here from Alexander McQueen and Armani. We are about scarcity, word of mouth, and making people feel relevant...not important. I was asked to not work the way I had before, not to worry about replenishment or assortment, but rather to focus exclusively on customizing the fashion and the experience for every customer. At first it was hard as it went against everything I thought I knew, but I decided I just needed to trust the vision and grow the business without changing the founding values.” The results speak for themselves.

Inside Golden Goose’s Milan headquarters.

What started with 17 employees is now 750 strong and the company recently moved into new headquarters in Milan. “Just like the day the company started, we still know each other, we still love each other, and we still trust each other,” Silvio adds. “Seventy percent of the employees are women, from every race and religion, and always very international. We embrace talent above all else -- the best people with the best hearts. We don’t hire the best professionals we can find because that limits our possibilities. We hire inspired people and let them focus on what makes them unique.” According to Maureen Chiquet, former CEO of Chanel and a native St. Louisan, “Golden Goose is more than a brand. It's a family of creative, passionate, soulful, visionary people. One thing I loved about working for Chanel was the emphasis on perfection in everything they did but the one thing I love about working for Golden Goose is the emphasis on the perfect imperfection!” With the majority of its consumers being Millennials and GenZ, the emphasis is on the individual. “We give our customers comfort and authenticity first, then cool. But the brand really caters to anyone who is passionate about life,” says the very passionate CEO. The pandemic helped Golden Goose understand the importance of their brand’s values of family first, positivity, creativity 34 slmag.net

and hope for the future. The main goal of its newest collection is to convey a positive message of hope and of a fresh start. In these times of uncertainty, creativity becomes an uplifting response. “CREATIVITY IS THE ANSWER” became the company’s motto and a recurring sentence used extensively throughout the collection. Going back not only to its founding values but also to the brand identity, the new collection is called ReStar, which perfectly narrates the values and the real DNA of the brand. Bold statements such as Rethink, Future, Happiness, Kindness in the Small Things, Do What You Love, and Creativity is the Answer are printed or embroidered on T-shirts and sweatshirts, embellished with jacquard or flock print on knitwear, and embroidered with studs and Swarovski crystals on leather and denim. A deep sense of freedom underlies the whole collection with its balance between easy and versatile pieces in jersey and knitwear, or in leather and denim -- all of these garments being very effective means of spreading these messages of positivity. Images of beautiful landscapes are used in some pieces to suggest the freedom of outdoor adventure and the willingness to begin traveling again. Golden Goose artisanal craftsmanship is fully manifested in the Dream Maker collection through the use of different treatments adapted to the different categories, recreating the

distinctive Golden Goose lived-in touch. To reinforce the importance of positivity, love, and being connected to each other, Golden Goose launched another initiative to encourage customers to join its creative community and work together on its designs. Believing that the energy of a collective is able to overcome any type of obstacles and that the most outstanding results can only be achieved through cooperation and co-creation, the company is inviting everyone to participate in a new activity called the “Dream Maker.” Dream Maker challenges people’s creativity and invites them to become an active part of the design process. In order to do so, Golden Goose decided to design a few garments on which the customers can give their final touch by themselves, adding their personal twist to these pieces following some specific input and guidelines given by the design team. This ensures a desired and appropriate outcome and pushes customers’ imaginations and creativity. For example, several T-shirts and sweatshirts come with small pieces of tape on which the customer can finish a brief sentence already written on it by adding a personal message with a colored marker that comes in a tool package included with the purchase of the garment. Other T-shirts come with numbered dots that customers can connect by embroidering through them and then

discovering the outline of the Golden star. These T-shirts come with a small kit containing colored thread to use for the embroidery. Other sweatshirts feature handsewn fabric patches on the back which the customer can decide to leave them on or remove them with the use of scissors to reveal a printed picture underneath. All these Dream Maker garments come with a QR code on the tag. By scanning it, the customer will be redirected to a guide on how to properly customize that specific piece. The brand is asking its lovers to push their creativity to the limits and work together on some of its most memorable styles, ranging from ready-to-wear pieces to footwear and accessories. The intertwining of ideas has always been one of the structural pillars of Golden Goose's design ethos: how the experiential pedigree of one notion or an object could develop and flourish in a completely different context, as seen or perceived through the eyes of someone else. It’s a journey of love, co-creation, and imagination. What Golden Goose does best is bring out the emotions of their customers in all of its designs. The company’s singular focus on their customers who, above all else, are passionate about life comes through. Even if the designs are not your thing, it’s hard not to be inspired by their vision, dedication, and success. sl

Piestewa Peak at sunrise

RAYDAR

Where to soak up the sun in Scottsdale from daybreak on Written by Bridget Williams French composer Claude Debussy is credited with writing, "There is nothing more musical than a sunset." Mother Nature struck up the band shortly after we arrived for a six-night stay in Scottsdale, during which I planned to scout the best places to bookend our day by watching the sun rise and set. It was cloudy when we checked into our first hotel—Mountain Shadows Resort—so I'd all but written off any chance of spying famous desert sunset show. Wandering around to get the lay of the land, I happened to look outside, and the sky seemed to be on fire. We made a bee-line to a hill on the resort's short course, where I stood in awe of the colors on the horizon. My mission was off to a promising start. From the outside, Mountain Shadows (rooms from $399/ night), which originally opened in 1959 and was quite the swinging spot in that heady era, hosting the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and John Wayne, boasts a slightly brutalist facade, giving little hint of what lies inside. Completely rebuilt in 2017, today, the resort's midcentury heart is palpable within airy and contemporary interiors infused with subtle industrial touches that add just the right amount of edge. Towering walls of glass bookend the lobby, providing an unobstructed view of a terraced lawn and onto the iconic Camelback Mountain in the distance. There are ample areas for casual gatherings, outfitted with midcentury-inspired furnishings with exposed brass frames and upholstered in jewel-toned velvet. 36 slmag.net

Two u-shaped wings contain 216 guest rooms and 42 condominium suites. One wing envelops the aforementioned lawn, the other, the hotel's social heart, including The Citizens Club, home to a very well-equipped fitness center and juice bar, as well as a hot tub and a pair of cabana-lined pools that stair-step the gentle slope of the land. Immediately upon entering our spacious studio-style firstfloor room facing the garden, I was quick to notice the shower, with glass on three sides, that seemed to float in the center of the space. Moving into the bedroom, one is quick to notice that the concrete ceiling nearly doubles in height. The abstract pattern of the flat-weave rug under the bed paid homage to the region’s Native American heritage, while a colorful canvas abstraction of a mountain range on a nearby wall highlighted the property’s legacy. Across the lawn, the second-floor Camelback Overlook is part of 37,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space and provides a front-row seat to the sunset. The terrace overlooks the par-3 18-hole Short Course, which promises fun and fast rounds for both beginners and pros. Arthur Jack Snyder designed the original 1961 course; it was later redesigned by Forrest Richardson, a Snyder mentee. Rounds end at Rusty's, a patio and lounge, where tradition mandates that the player with the lowest score on The Forest Wager (a bonus Hole 17.5) picks up a round of drinks.

At Hearth '61, chef Charles Wiley, named "One of the Best Hotel Chefs in America" by the James Beard Foundation, ser ves up elevated cuisine that draws inspiration from the exquisite flavors of local and organic ingredients. His exhibition-style kitchen turns out beautifully plated creations. Coming from cold Kentucky, we opted to dine alfresco at one of several fire pits positioned near the pool. Sipping a Winter Spritzer, a seasonal spin on the Aperol Spritz, we watched as the sky transitioned from pink to dark purple, and then an inky black perforated by twinkling stars. Presented with our first course— ahi tartare accompanied by blistered shishito peppers— we pulled out our phones to take photos before digging in. I'm not a vegetarian, but the beguiling blend of ingredients proposed in the quinoa and lentil stew piqued my 38 slmag.net

interest. The colorful composition was hearty but not heavy, and left just enough room to indulge in dessert, a lemon confection encased in white chocolate. On average, the Phoenix/Scottsdale area gets rain just 33 days per year; unfortunately, six of these happened to coincide with my visit. Rain thwarted our plans to watch the sunrise atop Camelback Mountain (the Echo Canyon trailhead is an easy one-mile walk from Mountain Shadows through the Paradise Valley neighborhood). Undeterred, we set out as soon as the skies showed signs of clearing. Be forewarned that the 4.8-mile out-and-back trail to the top of the area's highest peak is rated as extremely difficult, but in my humble opinion, the bouldering involved can bring out one's inner child, and the exertion is well worth the views. As a bonus, each time you glance up at the peak

during your stay, you can relish in the satisfaction of knowing that you made it to the top. The Phoenix/Scottsdale area is a mecca for urban hiking, and I found it fascinating how quickly you can go from a bustling city to what feels like the boondocks. At the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, located on Scottsdale's outer edge, there are more than 215 miles of trails for people of all abilities spread out over 35,000 acres. Other notable and challenging hikes with rewarding views include Piestewa Peak, the second-highest point in the Phoenix Mountains; Two-Bit Peak; and, Dobbins Lookout in the South Mountains, whose Depression-era observation deck can also be accessed by car. If you want to feel miles away without working up a sweat, a visit to the Desert Botanical Gardens is in order. Home to more than 50,000 accessioned plants through its five thematic trails, I

was genuinely surprised to learn that there was so much diversity in desert flora and fauna. Prefer ogling structures over shrubbery? Make a reservation to tour Taliesin West, built by Frank Lloyd Wright and his apprentices in the 1930s and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. Wright's home, school, and studio served as a living architectural laboratory, and the tour offers a fascinating glimpse into the golden years of the United States most famous architect. If you time your visit just right, you can cap off your day with a sunset dinner at Isabella's Kitchen. A bustling spot popular with locals, its large patio and second-floor terrace overlooks the McDowell Mountains and Grayhawk Golf Club's Talon course, home to the 2021 and 2022 NCAA Men's and Women's Golf Championships.

Tyner's Trail at the base of Mummy Mountain and on the 125acre JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa (rooms from $299/night) requires minimal effort for maximum views, including downtown Phoenix and Camelback Mountain. Our second stop, this AAA Four Diamond property, which originally opened in 1936, and was acquired by Marriott in 1967, holds the distinction of being the first resort in Marriott's history. Guests are comfortably accommodated in 453 adobe-style casitas, some with private pools, and all of which are surrounded by impeccably manicured gardens and pathways whose colors seem even more vibrant against the sienna shades of the natural desert landscape. Tops among the vast amenities at the resort are the 32,000 square-foot destination spa and 36 holes of championship golf at Camelback Golf Club. COVID precautions are in full effect throughout the resort; at the spa, this translates to reduced capacity, requiring a reservation to use the expansive fitness center, and wearing a mask for the duration of spa treatments. Still, an aura of respite and tranquility is maintained throughout the facility, and after so many months of isolation, a massage feels even more 40 slmag.net

indulgent and restorative. Those wanting to create an entire spa day can enjoy healthy and flavorful cuisine at Sprouts at the Spa, and reserve a private cabana for relaxing next to the spa pool. There are seven distinct dining experiences on the property, many of which have outdoor patios. During our visit, the pinnacle of on-property cuisine, Lincoln Steakhouse & Bar, was still closed as a casualty of COVID. However, we still managed to indulge our yen for red meat with carne asada served with a savory chimichurri that we washed down with a signature margarita. The area around Mountain Shadows and the JW Marriott Camelback Inn is largely residential. A notable exception is El Chorro, a local institution that's worth a short walk. Operated as a restaurant, bar, and lodge as far back as 1937, the current owner recently renovated the property, expanding the vast landscaped patio and incorporating several green-building features. What didn't change is an 80-plus year history of presenting patrons with a basket of their famous sticky buns. We took ours to go, and even two days later, warmed in the microwave, they were sinfully delicious.

Studio guest room at Hotel Valley Ho.

In contrast, Hotel Valley Ho (rooms from $369/night) sits at the gateway to bustling Main Street in Old Town Scottsdale. Considered one of the most well-preserved mid-century modern hotels in the country, the architecture and interior design of Hotel Valley Ho takes guests on a sentimental journey to a bygone era. When it originally opened in 1956, Bing Crosby, Tony Curtis, and Zsa Zsa Gabor were among the members of the in-crowd to sign the guest registry. Recently restored to its former glory, the property’s 241 guest rooms have punchy mid-century-inspired décor. Our tower suite boasted a full kitchen with sleek and sunny yellow lacquered cabinetry and a large terrace that provided a view of Camelback's backside. A hub of activity, Hotel Valley Ho’s OH Pool is lined with colorful cabanas and an Instagramable "It's Always Sunny in Scottsdale," mural, which I ironically spied during a walk around the property in the rain. Lining the corridor walls leading to the VH Spa are historical photos and hotel advertisements that guide guests on an interesting walk down memory lane. A more sensory journey to far-flung locales is offered via four Jet Set spa treatments. The hammam experience is infused with savory aromatics from the Far East, while wild-harvested Arctic Berry body wrap is part of the Helsinki treatment. With an expansive poolside terrace, ZuZu, Hotel Valley Ho's all-day restaurant, is always buzzy. The approachable menu (hello truffle fries!) is accompanied by a chic cocktail list. Hotel Valley Ho's Old Town location provides walkable access to a host of shopping and dining experiences. Inside the clubby

Mad Men-inspired confines at Second Story Liquor Bar you'll enjoy savory, modern American cuisine. Citizen Public House blew our minds with their bacon-fat heirloom popcorn, so simple but oh so good. Equally rapturous was the guacamole at The Mission Old Town. The restaurant's beautiful and romantic interior design is a fitting complement to its modern Latin cuisine. Knowing nothing about Arizona wines when we crossed the threshold at Merkin Vineyards' Old Town Tasting room, we were pleasantly surprised with the quality of wine produced at this familyowned winery, whose cellars are located 120-miles north in Jerome. Wholly committed to delivering a 100% Arizona experience, grapes are grown on 100-acres in the Verde Valley and Willcox regions, and the food served to accompany tastings utilizes fruits and vegetables grown on the estate. Merkin's ground-to-glass ethos was the perfect ending to a trip heavily focused on relishing the many natural wonders found in the Valley of the Sun, even when it rains. sl RESOURCES Stay Mountain Shadows – 5445 E. PERFECTLY PAIRED

Cakebread Cellars carries on the legacy of its trailblazing co-founder with women in leadership positions and a robust culinary program. Written by Chloe Gellar

Dolores Cakebread co-founded Cakebread Cellars, one of Napa Valley's most prominent wineries, in 1973 with Jack, her husband, and her high-school sweetheart. Having celebrated both her 90th birthday and 70th wedding anniversary shortly before her death this past October, Dolores leaves behind a legacy as a trailblazer in an industry in which women once took a backseat to men. As early as the 1980s, Dolores was championing a culinary approach to wine, launching Cakebread's "American Harvest Workshop," one of the first initiatives in the United States to pair food and wine with a focus on local, seasonal ingredients. Further supporting the integration of food and wine, Dolores was the driving force behind the wineries' famous fruit and vegetable garden that still greets guests today. She also worked with Cakebread's Culinary Director Brian Streeter to create wine-pairing cookbooks. The same year Dolores co-founded Cakebread, MaryAnn Graf became the first woman to be named head winemaker at a California winery. According to on-going research by Lucia Albine Gilbert and John C. Gilbert, in 2020, only fourteen-percent of the more than 4,200 wineries in California reported having a female lead winemaker, up from 10% two years prior. Speaking to these female professionals' proficiency, twenty-percent of the California wineries listed in Wine & Spirits Magazine's Top 100 Wineries were led by women winemakers in 2019 and 2020. The Gilbert's have published their research at womenwinemakers.com. 50 slmag.net

Family-owned Cakebread Cellars is among those who have selected a woman to lead the winemaking program, which encompasses 15 sites and 584 acres under vine across all of Napa Valley. As the head winemaker, Stephanie Jacobs has made sustainability a pillar in her practice. Just the fourth winemaker in the winery's history, she is the second consecutive woman to hold the position. Joining Cakebread in 2004 as an enologist, Stephanie has been integral in establishing and maintaining Cakebread Cellars' status as a "Napa Green Certified Winery" – a distinction the winery has held for over ten years. The winery is additionally certified as Fish Friendly and participates in the Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing program. Stephanie is continuously finding innovative ways to practice sustainable winemaking. Continuing Dolores' legacy during the pandemic, Cakebread Cellars has devised a unique series of on-going virtual programming that allows fans of the winery to sip, click, and connect in lieu of in-person tastings. Participants order a cooking class tasting kit in advance of a live cooking demonstration via Zoom with Executive Chef Brian Streeter. For more information on upcoming events, visit cakebread.com/virtual. To whet your appetite, Chef Streeter shared his recipe for Dungeness Crab Cakes, which he recommends pairing with a 2018 Cakebread Cellars Napa Valley Chardonnay. sl

THE ULTIMATE M5 BMW's new 2022 M5 CS Sedan is the company's quickest and most powerful production vehicle ever. Written by Andre James / Photography courtesy of BMW USA A limited-production super sedan only available for the 2022 model year, the 2022 M5 CS Sedan builds on the capabilities of M5, which itself was updated for the 2021 model year. The four-passenger seating configuration, with M carbon sport seats in the front and two individual bucket seats in the rear, is a first for the M5 variant. The simple formula of increasing power and cutting weight elevates performance and dynamics for both street and track driving. The S63 4.4-liter M TwinPower Turbo V8 delivers 627hp, an increase of 10hp over the Competition model. High levels of power and torque and working through the 8-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission with Drivelogic and the M xDrive allwheel-drive system, the M5 CS reaches 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds, 0.2 seconds quicker than the M5 Competition model. The top speed with the standard M Driver's Package is 190 mph. To help drivers hone and harness all that power, the M Driver's Package also includes a voucher for BMW driver training. The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission provides extraordinarily short shift times and fast, precise responses to the accelerator's input. Simultaneously, the dual-branch, electric flapcontrolled sport exhaust system, with quad stainless-steel tips, fitted to the M5 CS, amplifies and enhances the V8's soundtrack while giving the option for quieter operation when necessary. The exhaust tone's characteristics are changed depending on the selected mode – EFFICIENT, SPORT, or SPORT+. Additionally, the M Sound button can soften the exhaust tone for a more understated note. 54 slmag.net

Pressing the SETUP button positioned takes the driver to the 12.3-inch central display's menu for programming an individual configuration for the powertrain and chassis options (ROAD, TRACK, and SPORT modes). Simplified operation using the touchscreen display or iDrive Controller makes it easy to choose different engine, suspension, steering, and M xDrive system settings. The two red-painted M1 and M2 buttons next to the gearshift paddles on the M Alcantara steering wheel enable quick changes between setups. Exclusive exterior appointments include a unique gold bronze finish on the BMW kidney grille surround, the model badging, and the 20-inch forged alloy wheels. A striking feature of L-shaped light tubes within the Adaptive LED headlights is the application of racing-inspired yellow instead of standard white. The M5 CS represents the first application of red calipers with BMW Carbon ceramic brakes. Notable inside the cabin are seats clad in black Merino leather with Mugello red accents and contrasting red stitching. Imprinted on all four is a map of Nurburgring's Nordschleife, one of two circuits at the legendary race track, and where the M5 CS was put through its paces during development. Scheduled to arrive at dealerships later this year, those interested in reserving a BMW M5 CS Sedan from this limited run, which will have a starting price of $142,995, can inquire online at bmwusa.com. sl

Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance

BACK IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT While some event organizers have chosen to focus on 2022, several Concours across the country are making ambitious plans for the show to go on in 2021. Written by Andre James Car enthusiasts are a convivial and generous lot. When they come together at picturesque locations across the country for a Concours d'Elegance, a high-brow motoring show and tell, these gearheads, collectors, aficionados, and admirers make a significant impact on the charitable interests of the host city. Even without an event in 2020, the storied Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance still managed to distribute more than $1million to its local charity partners. "Since its beginning, the Pebble Beach Concours has had two goals," said Pebble Beach Concours Chairman Sandra Button, "to celebrate great cars and to raise money for people in need. We are proud to have raised almost $30 million for our local charity partners since the inception of the event in 1950." While the pandemic has conditioned us to enter dates into our calendars using a pencil rather than permanent ink, we've rounded up a list of domestic car shows that, as of press time, are scheduled to take place in 2021. GOING FOR GOLD IN SILVER LAKE VILLAGE The newly opened Goldener Hirsch Residences are a modern marvel on the mountain. Written by Bridget Williams

The snowfall seemed to have a sedative effect on an already sleepy village. Breaking the silence, an army of Snowcats were hard at work on nearby Bald Mountain. Diffused by the glittery flakes, their headlights reminded me of ethereal beams cast by an expedition submarine as it traverses the depths of the ocean floor. A sentiment likely inspired by the fact that I was watching the scene unfold from the edge of a glass-walled hot tub that cantilevers over the side of the rooftop at the newly opened wing of the Goldener Hirsch in Park City, Utah’s Silver Lake Village. Having just opened in mid-December of last year, we were the first people to stay in the handsomely appointed studio room, making the oft lauded “new car smell” a distant second to “new hotel smell”. The 40 residences in the new wing, ranging in size from 570 to 3,720-square-feet, are connected to the iconic Goldener Hirsch Inn— the only family-owned luxury hotel in Deer Valley— via a Bridge Plaza that provides a spacious mountain view outdoor gathering space. 60 slmag.net

In contrast to the 20-room Inn’s dominant Bavarian influences, the architecture of the $120 million expansion, designed by the vaunted firm Olson Kundig, is decidedly modern, rendered in steel, glass, and faux bois concrete walls. Todd-Avery Lenahan of TAL Studio, whose work has been described as “cinematic,” conceived the interior design. In the lobby level, where fireplaces bookend a pair of seating areas, a beguiling blend of touchstones from bygone eras are filtered through a contemporary lens. Surveying the space, I took on a directorial role, envisioning myself as a silver screen siren in this chic environment, complete with pin curls, a bias cut silk sheath dress, and looking wistfully at the camera while lounging, martini in hand, on the sleek moss-colored sofa. Lenahan’s ability to ricochet from a flair for the dramatic to a proficient eye for placidity was evident in our spacious studio room. Boasting a largely neutral color palette, white oak paneling dressed the wall behind both the bed and a sinuous cream-colored

sofa that anchored the seating area near a floor-to-ceiling window. Artwork, both paintings and black and white photography, nodded to Austria’s alpine landscape. After a day on the slopes, I much appreciated the bathroom’s soaking tub and steam shower. On-property amenities include an eye-popping ski-prep room designed in black and white with impactful pops of red. With on-snow ski storage at the base of the mountain, guests don’t have to trek their gear back and forth. The 2,026-acre Deer Valley Ski Resort is one of a handful of properties in the United States that doesn’t allow snowboarding. As a bad skier on a good day, the one-on-one coaching from a ski school pro, one of the largest in the country, as well as ample beginner runs, certainly increased my confidence, and kept me amply occupied while my better half schussed steeper slopes. Even with six mountain peaks and 21 chairlifts, it’s essential to plan ahead for skiing as Deer Valley caps the number of lift tickets sold each day to maintain

optimal social distancing. After a day on the slopes, we were elated to find a plate of warm cookies waiting for us when we returned to the room. While I reveled in the modern marvelousness of the expansion, it’s well worth a trip across the Bridge Plaza for dinner at the Bavarian-influenced Goldener Hirsch Restaurant. Here, classic Austrian dishes meet the best of what’s fresh and local. Beginning with fondue, a traditional Swiss winter meal, we moved on to wiener schnitzel and a stunningly plated Utah lamb loin with lingonberries, which are native to Scandinavia. Another cheesy Swiss classic—raclette—is the star of the show at nearby Empire Canyon Lodge’s winter-only Fireside Dining restaurant. Made in the traditional fashion in front of a stone fireplace, the restaurant reportedly goes through 700 wheels of cheese every winter; the simple deliciousness of warm melted cheese is a reminder that food needn’t be fussy to be fabulous.

The Goldener Hirsch provides complimentary on-call shuttle service in Deer Valley and to Main Street in Park City, which is less than three miles away. As easy as Uber, we used the app and never had to wait more than a few minutes for our ride to arrive. For an even more elevated experience and great insider information, hire private transport through Four Seasons Concierge. While wandering Main Street, we stopped into Gorsuch and overheard a salesgirl making her pitch: “We are a store of wants, not needs.” By the end of the day, I’d done my part to support the local economy, returning to the hotel with a shopping bag full of wants. We fueled our retail therapy with lunch at High West Distillery & Saloon, operating out of a historic livery stable and garage. More than one person had recommended The Burger, a delectable blend of Nimon ranch short rib and bison, and we were glad we heeded their advice. At Grappa, opened in 1992 and located in a former boarding house, the eccentricities inherent in an old house make for intimate and unique dining spaces. We went all-in on the Italian offerings. After shamelessly indulging

in grappa antipasto, spaghetti arrabbiata, and pistachio affogato, I debated walking the few miles uphill back to the resort! A fun day trip that’s ideal for families and open year-round is Woodward Park City. Opened in 2019, it’s an action sports facility encompassing skating, BMX, trampolining, skateboarding, skiing, liftassisted mountain biking, snowboarding, and tubing (the only place for tubing in Park City). After struggling on skis, I have to admit that it was quite a treat to effortlessly glide down the hill in an innertube. Each evening, almost on cue, a gentle snow shower coincided with our post-dinner stroll through Silver Lake Village. Catching an ephemeral flake on my fingertip, I marveled at its fleeting form. Just like the Residences at the Goldener Hirsch, its architectural uniqueness is a thing of beauty. sl RESOURCES Getting Around Canyon Transportation – canyontransport.com / Four Seasons Concierge – fsparkcity.com Stay The Goldener Hirsch Inn & Residences – 7570 Royal St., Park City, UT; goldenerhirschinn.com Play Deer Valley Resort – deervalley.com / Visit Park City – visitparkcity.com / Woodward Park City – 3863 Kilby Rd., Park City, UT; woodwardparkcity.com Dine Fireside Dining – 9200 Marsac Ave. #306, Park City, UT; deervalley.com / Goldener Hirsch Restaurant – 7570 Royal St., Park City, UT; goldenerhirschinn.com / Grappa – 151 Main Street, Park City, UT; grapparestaurant.com / High West Distillery & Saloon – 703 Park Ave., Park City, UT; highwest.com

The availability of premiere corner units like these two in Twelve Twelve in the Gulch are few and far between. The downtown luxury condominium complex boasts sweeping views and so much more. Even as new buildings rise up all around, few provide this lens through which to watch Nashville’s ever-changing skyline. The over 25,000 square feet of amenities available at 1212 Laurel Street are unparallelled—24/7 on-site security, a heated saline swimming pool, spa and state-of-the art fitness center. Inviting common areas, both inside and out, as well as Owner’s Lounges and Guest suites add to the available spaces for residents to spread out and enjoy their own slice of heaven in the heart of the Gulch. Animal lovers will appreciate the pet-friendly amenities including an “Evolution Dog Wash” and covered dog-walking area. 68 slmag.net

On the 19th Floor, two owners from completely different regions interestingly enough found the same up-and-coming New York and Nashville based designer. Designer Benjamin Vandiver has created two distinct spaces that take full advantage of the vistas. Unit 1901 is 1,867 square feet with two bedrooms and two and a half baths and includes custom touches from heated terrazzo floors, SubZero and Wolf appliances, waterfall Carrara countertops and island, a built-in Wolf coffee maker, water filtration system, wine storage & smart home technology. The clean lined, neutral colored wood casework and abundant natural light give the condo a touch of bright, minimalistic charm while offering incredible storage throughout. DOCTOR’S ORDERS Red Phone Booth Nashville offers a Prohibition Era experience Written by Melissa Mahanes Discretely off Broadway in the Hume-Fogg School’s shadow and just a stone’s throw from the Lower Broadway scene lies an inconspicuous brick building distinguished only by an intriguing red phone booth. Behind this façade lies the ultimate 1920s prohibition-era speakeasy experience, Red Phone Booth Nashville. Red Phone Booth is a club featuring premium hard-to-find spirits, craft cocktails, and cigars catering to the connoisseur. To enter, you dial a secret telephone number on the rotary phone inside the cannibalized British phone booth—a number that can only be obtained through a member, friend, or a concierge of one of 12 nearby luxury hotels (until now...). The 100-year-old building that houses Red Phone Booth has quite a fascinating history, having been home to several businesses, including the Tin Cup Coffee House, a tailor who made costumes for country music stars, and most notoriously, the Classic Cat “gentleman’s club.” Passing through the phone booth entrance into the club, a wall with private humidors on the left is crowned by “the Cabinet of the Gods,” an illuminated glass case of bottles with some of 72 slmag.net

the rarest spirits on Earth. The club’s front portion is the Bar, or “The Pharmacy,” which features a robust back bar of fine “medicine.” The lounges are furnished with custom Italian leather couches on floors of reclaimed tobacco barn wood. The walls are embellished with still-life paintings by renowned artist Christian Waggoner, who, among other accomplishments, was sanctioned by Lucas Films LTD to create images commemorating the 30th anniversary of Star Wars. The very back of the club houses the private “Mafia Room,” with a pool table and lounge with a large flat-screen TV to enjoy sports events, concerts, etc. The creator of the RPB concept, Steve de Haan, started tending bar early on at TGI Friday’s in Atlanta. There, Steve discovered he had a flair for mixology and was even a competitive flair bartender. His grandfather, W.J. “Bill” Boortz—a pharmacist, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Squire, and cigar aficionado—was a tremendous influence on Steve. He introduced him to the early 20th-century art of making craft cocktails and the etiquette of entertaining. The food and beverage menu at Red Phone Booth pays homage to his grandfather’s

View of humidor favorite wood-bound cocktail recipe book Here’s How. De Haan honors Boortz by writing, “Please share the Red Phone Booth with like-minded individuals, those friends with whom you would leave the keys to your house without a second thought.” It is clear that de Haan wants to show his guests the best possible experience. Red Phone Booth’s original location is in Atlanta when it began as Prohibition in 2002. Another site is soon to open in Buckhead. Nashville seemed to be a logical next step, and de Hann looked for the perfect spot for quite some time before settling on 8th Avenue. Michael Cudlitz – an award-winning actor best known for his roles as John Cooper in Southland and Abraham Ford of The Walking Dead is partners with de Haan in Nashville after enjoying hanging out at RPB in Atlanta. Red Phone Booth makes available some of the finest and rarest bourbons, scotches, and Japanese whiskeys in the world. Bourbons include Woodford Baccarat, Weller Non-Chilled Filtered, and several varieties of Pappy Van Winkle’s. Center and top of the bar are hard to find Octomore Scotch and MacCallan 25. Yamaguchi Japanese

whiskey is also a gem. The bartenders carve ice daily from 300-pound double-reverse pass osmosis blocks. Garnishes are cut to order, and juices are freshly squeezed daily, including blood orange, mango, and cranberry. The back bar also includes a collection of some of the most exotic liqueurs available. The staff has a comprehensive knowledge of the spirits and craft exceptional retro-inspired cocktails. “So step up to the bar, tell your likes and dislikes to our master mixologists, and allow them to craft you the freshest, finest cocktail of your life.” Red Phone Booth boasts a walk-in humidor containing over 100 specially curated labels. The air is triple-filtered and is kept at a constant 70 degrees Fahrenheit and 70 percent humidity. Their house cigar is the 18th Amendment, a dark, medium-bodied cigar made of a blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers encased in a Brazilian Arapirca Maduro wrapper. Other phenomenal, rare smokes include the Rocky Patel Special Edition, Davidoff Zino Rockets, and Luciano Meirelles’ The Dreamer. Red Phone Booth is also a Limited Cigar Associate for Privada Cigar Club.

Gallery With regard to cuisine, Red Phone Booth offers expertly prepared Neapolitan-style pizza with a few creative liberties taken. Stephen De Haan studied in Italy under Pizzaiola Maestros and is a certified Pizzaiola. The pizza is baked at 900 degrees for 70 seconds in a 6000-pound Acunto brick oven imported from Italy burning white oak. ACQUALINA WHERE TO STAY: Unlike many hotels on Miami Beach, which require a hop and skip across the hot sand to get to the sea, the Acqualina Resort and Spa earns its beachfront title by practically merging with the water. Only a thin strip of sand dotted with lounges, bright red beach umbrellas, and water-toting butlers separate you from the calm waters of the Atlantic. The lush grounds feature outdoor living room settings with luxurious furniture on Seashore Paspalum grass and three oceanfront pools with restaurants and cabanas to retreat to for extra privacy. The spa is the first ESPA in North America, where treatments run the gamut from exotic massages using Himalayan salt stones to blissful three-hour-long massage experiences. As for the cuisine, three restaurants vie for your attention, but the undeniable ace-in-the-hole is Michele Mazza’s Il Mulino (yes, the same as in Nashville) and the classic Italian dishes it churns out are as exceptional as you expect them to be. FUN FOR KIDS: Children ages five to twelve have complimentary access to marine biology-inspired activities, and guests of all ages can enjoy an oceanfront soccer field, basketball court, and a variety of organized outdoor pool and beach games. Whether participating in on-property Miami activities or local experiences, happiness awaits the whole family. 82 slmag.net

Experience the true pleasures of its world-class, 20,000 square foot facility, which features state-of-the-art treatment rooms, relaxation lounges, private and special occasion Royal Spa Suite, and magnificent outdoor terrace retreat. Embracing the legendary European Day Spa philosophy that each visit is a journey, your experience begins with a signature selection of Ayurvedic-infused holistic, restorative, and meditative treatments for face and body. For the ultimate mind-body connection, Acqualina Spa offers yoga and other premier wellness services, in addition to a healthy spa menu. WHERE TO DINE: Within Acqualina’s Mediterranean villa environment, you will find the best in alfresco dining in all of Miami. At Costa Grill, experience delicious Mediterranean selections steps from the beach while Il Mulino New York offers renowned Italian cuisine in a high-energy setting. Ke-uH is a newer restaurant at the Acqualina serving Japanese fare. The resort’s gorgeous outdoors also sets the scene for a beautiful picnic in paradise. BRIGHTSIDE BAKESHOP—Baking Days Brighter Andrea Borchers of Brightside Bakeshop is classically trained at both the San Francisco Baking Institute and Le Cordon Bleu Paris, where she fell in love with croissants. CAITYPIES BAKERY & BBQ—Let There Be Real, Good Pie Although Caity Guszkowski has expanded to Bakery & BBQ through the 2020 pandemic, the pies are still the heart of her East Nashville business. When asked, Caity said that “picking a favorite pie is like picking a favorite child, though there are a few on the menu that I’m incredibly proud to bake. Often it is the simplest looking pies that require the most advanced techniques and eye for the ovens. Black Sesame Sugar Cream and Coffee Chess challenge me the most and provide me with the most gratification at the dessert table. These flavors are sleeper hits with their own pie cult followings, and I’m proud to be their leader.” Caitypies features weekly specials from Mile High Lemon Meringue Pie, Nashville Banana Pudding Pie, Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookies, Strawberry Pop-Tarts, a Miso Espresso Brownie, and a Dulce Krispie. We anxiously await when they can have their own brick-and-mortar bakery and can stop teasing us with their Instagram posts of “Frankenpie”—six slices of pie in one pan (you can special order if you want a large amount!). While you are at it, pick up a Chicken Pot Pie or some killer BBQ and Green Chile Mac N Cheese from Caity’s husband, pitmaster Chris. THE CUPCAKE COLLECTION—Sprinkled with Joy The Cupcake Collection story started in the middle of the 2008 recession when founder and CEO, Mignon François, took the last $5 she had for dinner one week and bought ingredients for what would eventually become a family legacy with over 5 million cupcakes sold. In addition to serving as the Director of Joy at The Cupcake Collection, Mignon lends her talent as a Nashville community cheerleader and entrepreneur to the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corporation Foundation, Nashville Entrepreneur Center, and to Pathway Women’s Business Center as a board member. Home of the original sweet potato cupcake, The Cupcake Collection has two sweet locations: Nashville and Mignon’s hometown of New Orleans. “At The Cupcake Collection, we believe that good cake is connected to great memories and our cupcakes take you back to a nostalgic time or place when you experienced something that was made with love. To us, that equals joy, and the main ingredient baked strategically into every single cupcake,” said François. TCC has seasonal flavors such as Key Lime, Lemonberry, King Cake, and Classic flavors like Birthday Cake and Red Velvet. In addition to cupcakes, they have Celebration cakes to order (48 hours in advance). There is a reason that there is a line around the block at The Cupcake Collection—it is confection perfection!

SAFEKEEPING

Two exceptionally crafted pieces will keep your treasures safe with pizzazz Written by Brit Hoyt

“Baron” is a luxury floor safe designed in Neo-Victorian style and inspired by the precision craft of Swiss watchmaking. It is an exceptional piece of top-notch craftsmanship and with a steampunk influence— covered by brass and stainless-steel gears on the outside. It features eight watch winders, cigar humidors, and four drawers for extra storage, all upholstered in soft black velvet. “Baron” can be opened on both sides via remote, using an automatic engine-controlled mechanism. Built on a sturdy wooden frame, it is lined with polished brass, making this a timeless and remarkable design piece. Influenced by the California Gold Rush, the “Millionaire Safe” is a statement piece designed to cause quite an impression. Crafted of mahogany and gold-plated polished brass frame with several dents, it sparks both interest and imagination, reminding us of the Old West’s vault robbery attempts. Nestled in a turned brass silver-plated gear wheel mechanism, the imposing safe handle obeys the will of its master 96 slmag.net

through a secret dial lock combination. The overlay door makes room for an open space lined in velvet to store jewelry, liquors, or other luxury lifestyle items and a set of lockable drawers and doors. The unit can be customized with watch winders, shelves, and a choice of locking systems. Boca do Lobo was founded in 2005 in Portugal and is committed to reinterpreting ancient techniques of fine craftsmanship to create stunning pieces of contemporary design. Each creation carries the legacy of centuries of craftsmanship. In the workshops, talented artisans challenge and combine traditional manufacturing techniques with the latest technological methods to shape the finest materials into remarkable furniture, upholstery, and lighting pieces, which gives rise to timeless cosmopolitan environments. The collections are inspired and accurately handcrafted in Portugal with attention to detail, passion for beauty, and the pure dedication of skilled craftsmen and craftswomen. sl Baron Safe (€67,590) and Millionaire Safe (€35,680) to order at bocadolobo.com
