Nick Westhead, Paley 1983 Keep your fingers crossed…. Things are slowly getting back to normal. After the disappointment of the postponement of OG day in early July, it was fantastic to see so many OGs back in September for the rearranged date. The sun shone, old acquaintances were renewed and the 1st XV smashed Ashville – so all was good!

Firstly, I’d like to extend my thanks to Gary Hartley (C, 80) for his work as President in such a difficult year. Despite the lack of activity and events during the year, an awful lot of work has been going on behind the scenes, which Gary has been instrumental in driving forward during his tenure. I hope to continue in the same vein to push forward and build on the work done by Gary and the committee.

Having become involved in the world of Giggleswick again, it has been a sharp learning curve getting up to speed with new developments.

Over the last 18 months there has been a significant change in the direction of your committee – under the banner of Transformation and Modernisation.

You can read more of these developments on page 33. We also hope to develop a mentoring network of OGs to match with 6th form students interested in specific career paths. Neil Ratcliffe (P, 94) your past committee chairman has been instrumental in writing a mentoring proposal which we are aiming to communicate fully in the new year. If this venture proves successful it will fulfil every objective of the modernisation programme – OG engagement, alignment to school objectives, add value to the

curriculum and provide an awareness to students of a vibrant OG community.

Whilst by no means a new event, a great start to this Autumn Term, was the London Drinks evening held at The Dilly Hotel in the heart of Piccadilly.

70+ OGs spanning decades enjoyed a great night. The venue was sourced by two young London based OGs Nicola Ehlinger (St, 11) and Phoebe Lebrecht (St, 08) with great support from the development office at school. A blueprint to replicate all over the world, and our aim of the modernisation programme!

The new year also brings big changes at school with a change at the top. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all OGs to wish Mark Turnbull the very best wishes in his new role at Kent College, Canterbury. During Mark’s 7-year tenure at Giggleswick, things have gone from strength to strength, and we wish him well for the future.

As one door closes another one opens and we give the new Headmaster, Sam Hart a very warm welcome to Giggleswick from all OGs and very much look forward to meeting him in the new year.

Finally, I would like to say I feel incredibly privileged to be your President for this year and I hope to meet up with many of you at the various events over the next few months.

Headmaster’s Welcome: Getting the Balance Right elcome to the latest edition of Gigg:News.

For over seven years now I have been privileged enough to be able to write these words from my office in the middle of the school campus. I can look out across the fields and lawns of the school to the steep rising scars of Attermire across the Ribble.

A timeless landscape that all of us, who have spent time at Giggleswick, have learned to value. It is an environment that has shaped how the school has grown, how we shape our curriculum, and which so inspired Walter Morrison. Celebrating his legacy to the school, particularly in the form of our chapel, reminds us all how we become so attached to a particular place.

Giggleswick today is a school that is a wonderful place to live and work. It is a place where young people really do thrive. This is not just because they achieve some excellent results by the end of their time here, but more importantly because they are happy. And I am not giving the Head's view that everyone at Giggleswick loves being here. Any school will have its good weeks and those weeks that will present more of a challenge. Just ask some of the pupils who took part in the house singing competition just before half-term. There will have been many who would have gone through moments of fear and trepidation in the rehearsals for their performance. Yet on the night, all of them exited the stage with broad smiles, animated by having overcome their fears to produce something of which they could be proud. Equally those who walk around

the campus and who have a chance to speak to current Giggleswickians all say how happy the pupils seem to be. And we can all appreciate how much tougher it is to grow up today.

We believe that achieving this sense of happiness comes through getting the balance as right as we can. Balance in the day, between the classroom and the cocurriculum. Balance in our outcomes: recognising that results matter but so does wellbeing and developing the skills that are going to equip today's Giggleswickians for life beyond school. In recognising this need for balance, we believe that we are giving the pupils the right outlook to go on to lead fulfilling lives. This might also be why the school was able to adjust so nimbly to the uncertainties created by the pandemic. Throughout the past year, no lessons have been lost and no learning has been left behind.

It was brilliant to hear the boys of Morrison echo their rallying cry, 'For Walter', during the Singing and Speaking. I suspect that the passion they displayed for their house and what they are getting out of their school will have brought a smile to his face.

Every year the chapel, created entirely through his vision and benefaction, is booked through the summer as Old Giggleswickians return to get married. Giggleswick is an incredibly special place.

Special because of its setting, because of the buildings he founded, and because of the balance in our approach to education. An approach we feel is more relevant today than ever.

91 year old OG cycles 90 miles every 9 days for 90 days I have always particularly sympathised with people who have major sight loss or are blind. The reason may go back to my grandmother who survived Terezin concentration camp during the war but emerged with no sight in one eye. Perhaps as a result I have been a supporter of Guide Dogs and a puppy sponsor for many years and have also been a volunteer reader for Talking Newspapers in Preston and Southport.

In fact, if you have ever watched any international tennis matches, chances are they’ll have been played on James’ hard court sports flooring paints, produced on the Yorkshire/Lancashire border. The same applies if you are a member of a gym, chances are that the squash/tennis/badminton court you are playing on will have been produced by his company.

This first single touches on those delicate discrepancies you get when you just don’t feel good enough for someone. Those tender human anxieties make you feel inadequate. Embracing collaboration, this first track enlisted friends across Europe. This track was written in Salzburg, co-produced via Zürich, vocals in Oslo and mastering in London, adding a sense of internationalism whilst building a team to bounce off, collaborate, embracing language and culture to a mutual benefit. Audibly inspired by the backdrop of the Salzkammergut, the first release mimics the actions of its title.

My last “Cycling for Guide Dogs” day will be December 11th. I hope it will finish with a bang and that my target will be reached.

Inspired by the Austrian Landscape, OG releases first single After taking time to recuperate post-university, I ventured out to Austria to work in education and experience a different culture. After a colleague passed away, this inspired me to create the Finter Music project, to explore creativity and accept potential failure as room to grow.

Victory Colours, Down to Earth Paints, is the creation of brother and sister team, James Knighton (N, 90) and Victoria Yardley (née Knighton) (N, 86). Their eco-friendly paint has featured in a recent article by The Times Newspaper and has also been used on the BB2 programme, ‘Your Home Made Perfect’, which aired on 13 October 2021.

Probably because of my age, which I personally tend to ignore, my plan was mentioned to the local newspaper and to Granada TV resulting in an article in the paper and an interview on Granada Reports going out one Saturday evening.

As an organisation, Guide Dogs was born 90 years ago and to celebrate their 90th anniversary they decided to hold a major fundraising effort. We, as supporters, were all encouraged to think of ways we could use the number 90 to raise funds.

As I was also 90 last year (now 91) I decided to offer to cycle 90 miles every 9 days for 90 days. I launched my own Just Giving

Victory Colours Down to Earth Paints has been quietly garnering a loyal customer base as the go to company for premium quality, environmentally responsible paints. The past 18 months have been a particularly busy time for the business, where Lockdown created huge demand for online decorating products. An OG at the Manor Chris Barritt (St, 70) will be appearing in ‘Manor’ at the National Theatre in London from 16 November – 1 January 2022.

Rehearsals started for this Moira Buffini play back in March 2020, but were quickly halted due to the pandemic.

Starring Nancy Carroll (The Crown) and Shaun Evans (Vigil, Endeavour) Manor tells the story of a group of strangers who find themselves in need of shelter following a violent storm.

Bob Drake’s mission to visit OG War Graves As part of the Old Giggleswickian Club centenary commemorations of the outbreak of the First World War, my wife and I have been researching the names on the war memorials of those who lost their lives from Giggleswick School. In August 2015, we decided to visit some of the graves of the fallen and we went to the Commonwealth War Graves and memorials around the town of Ypres, in Belgium. We took Royal British Legion poppy wreaths with the OG Club centres and wooden crosses to place on each of the graves and memorials of our fallen.

We were able to visit both the huge Tyne Cot Memorial, where 34,946 service men who have no known grave are commemorated and 11,956 are buried in the Cemetery, and the Menin Gate Memorial where a further 54,394 service men who have no known grave are remembered. We were present for the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate on our first evening in Ypres, after which we found the name of 2Lt Gavin Jack (Shute House 1913 - 1922) high up on panel 11, some 30ft up just under the roof, as part of the Royal Scots memorial.

Jonathan plays Dromio in The Comedy of Errors Jonathan Broadbent (P, 95) is playing Dromio of Syracuse in The Royal Shakespeare Company’s hilarious and touching production of The Comedy of Errors, at the Alhambra Theatre Bradford until 6th November 2021 and the Barbican Theatre London from 16th November until 31st December 2021.

The Comedy of Errors tells the story of a father who ends up in the wrong country on the wrong day as a government makes hasty proclamations about travel. A lonely son, while searching for his brother, loses himself. Across town a wife starts to realise her husband is not the man she thought he was (but rather likes it). Will anything ever be the same again?

The following morning we arrived at the ancient Lille Gate entrance to the old city of Ypres, walked up the pathway and along the Ramparts, and 50 metres along the Kanonweg we came to the Ypres Ramparts Cemetery.

There are 198 Commonwealth burials in this cemetery, which is beautifully kept and has a lovely aspect overlooking the River Leperlee (previously known by its French name of Yprelee). We soon located the grave of: Maj Colin Campbell Royal Field Artillery, Town House 1895-1897 and paid our respects.

It was a very moving trip visiting the memorials of the final resting place of these OGs. It was good to know that the memorials, graves and cemeteries are well looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Through our research we found out more about those former members of the school who lost their lives 100 years ago and as in Lawrence Binyon’s poem and which we repeat each Remembrance Day ‘We will remember them’.

Giving at Giggleswick - Together we are Stronger Each year the school helps around 42 pupils in the school through means-tested bursaries, costing the school on average £413,000. This is separate to any scholarships offered to students, with an average cost of £680,000 per year. Since our Telethon campaign of July 2019, where we asked people to donate a monthly gift to school, you have raised £25,000 to go towards fee remissions.

This is a tremendous achievement, for which we are hugely grateful.

Giggleswick Allotment and Gardening Club In 2019 we began our Friday afternoon activity with three Sixth Form pupils and two members of staff working on a patch of ground behind Style. The COVID pandemic halted progress on two occasions, but with a larger number of volunteers and a very kind donation from Richard Roberts, (S, 77), we have managed to purchase the tools and equipment required to transform the space into a working allotment which has just produced an excellent first crop. We have two raised beds, one allotment strip and three hand-built compost areas.

In September 2021 our team of 10 Sixth Form pupils are mentoring 16 Year 7 pupils, who are learning the

ropes of gardening at a much younger age. Friday afternoons give all pupils the opportunity to have a break from screens and social media. They put their hands in soil, do physical tasks, all whilst improving their mental health. We have one new project this term: building our pond. This is to introduce the idea of biodiversity to the pupils.

We are looking forward to next year, where we are hoping to have a polytunnel to be able to get a greater range of flowers and crops and to protect our more sensitive crops from the Giggleswick rabbits!

Giggleswick School Parents’ Association The GSPA has a membership of all parents and guardians of pupils at Giggleswick School and aims to provide closer links between its membership and the school by organising social events and activities.

The GSPA also aims to provide support to the School by attending open days to chat with prospective families, giving leaving gifts to members of staff as a thank you from the parent body and by raising funds for small projects around school that wouldn’t normally be funded out of fee income.

Over the past 5 years the GSPA have raised over £11,000 for local and national charities and over £26,000 for projects around school. At the heart of the GSPAs support for the school are the pupils.

Several small projects of a few hundred pounds each can make all the difference to pupils and

Many of us are used to the concept of giving monthly to our favourite charities in the knowledge that our gifts are helping to make a difference to someone’s future. The same can be said of those loyal friends who give regularly to Giggleswick.

Most people give small regular monthly amounts and have been doing so for several years.

Collectively, as a group, these generous donations are contributing to our Bursary Fund and enabling children the opportunity to realise their potential through an outstanding education, irrespective of their financial means.

Remembering Loved Ones You may have noticed on OG Day, that a few of our benches around the campus are starting to look in need of replacing. We have one of the most stunning campuses in the UK and when people come to visit it is important that they can sit and reflect at the beautiful countryside.

A Memorial Bench is a special and thoughtful way to remember a loved one, standing as a reminder of their life for many years to come. It also offers a special place for family and friends to reflect on memories and moments shared.

We would like to offer you the opportunity to have one of these new benches inscribed with your loved one’s details, or perhaps your family name, through a minimum donation of £1,000.

The GSPA Winter Appeal is to raise funds for the GSPA and one very special project; “We wanted to support OG, Harry Kessler in his outstanding effort to raise money for Guide Dogs for the Blind”, said Sarah Crombie, Chair of the GSPA. .

“We felt that he is such an inspiration for pupils and parents, that we wanted to help him as a member of our school community”. The GSPA Winter Appeal includes a superb “Yorkshire Raffle” of Christmas goodies provided by Yorkshire businesses and an online Silent Auction.

Young Giggleswickians Hearing from OGs and their fascinating paths since leaving Giggleswick Owain Smith

Cambridge University Owain Smith (S, 17) has been accepted into Cambridge University, Lucy Cavendish College to study a PhD in Geography. Owain previously studied an integrated Masters in Earth Sciences at Durham University, where he specialised in Geophysics and Volcanology.

At Cambridge, Owain will be working with two world-class researchers in Volcanology to study the hazards presented by dormant volcanoes.

He is hoping to use this to create a general method of hazard analysis that can then be applied to countries with few resources allocated to volcanic monitoring. This will include at least one field trip to Central/South America, COVID-depending.

Owain is also looking for funding assistance, as both the Research Council funding and university scholarship fell through. Through working, saving, charitable donations and a Doctoral Loan from Student Finance England, he has raised over £50,000. He is however, looking to raise a further £10-15,000 to support his research through his undergraduate supervision.

About the PhD My PhD title is: “Invisible threats? Assessing hazard from volcanoes in long repose periods.”

What does this mean?

The current United States Geological Society method of ranking volcanoes by hazardous potential assumes that inactive volcanoes, that haven’t erupted for more than 10,000 years are

less dangerous than active volcanoes.

However, inactive volcanoes tend to erupt explosively and cause greater destruction than active volcanoes. This PhD will assess the current USGS method with respect to 2 volcanoes in the Latin America and/or East Africa regions. I will be working with 3 supervisors who are experts in geological hazards and volcanology and hope to establish support for indigenous communities in these areas in the event of an eruption of these dangerous volcanos.

How will the PhD benefit society?

Your support will go towards research in supporting indigenous communities living in some of the most dangerous places on Earth.

We are hoping to predict possible eruptions from these volcanoes, and by understanding their patterns we can begin to support these small communities in emergency planning for their future.

Malik Hamrouni

Sport and Exercise at Leeds Beckett University After leaving Giggleswick School, I went to Leeds Beckett University to study Sport and Exercise Science. After graduating with a First, I began an MSc in Sport and Exercise Nutrition at Loughborough University. Through studying Exercise Immunology, I developed a keen interest in the beneficial effect of physical activity on the immune system.

I saw pursuing a PhD as a logical continuation of my interest in this field. Following the completion of my Masters, in which I obtained a Distinction, I was fortunate to be offered a PhD position at Loughborough University supported by their Doctoral Scholarship.

Owing to COVID-19 and its potential to cause chronic ill-health in recovering patients, there is a pressing need to research strategies that may confer a protective effect against COVID-19, in addition to interventions that may aid recovery and promote long-term health after infection.

Regular physical activity is known to be associated with enhanced immune function and lower levels of inflammation.

As such, my PhD thesis will explore how physical activity may play an important role in protection and recovery from SARS-CoV-2 infection with a particular focus in at-risk populations, such as older adults and individuals with obesity. I hope that my research will highlight the importance of physical activity during the current pandemic, encourage greater public health efforts to promote exercise, and develop understanding of how physical activity may serve as a key strategy for coping with future epidemics and pandemics caused by similar respiratory viruses.

I have already completed the first study of my PhD, an epidemiological study that investigated whether a high physical activity level could attenuate the elevated COVID-19 mortality risk typically associated with obesity. As part of this study, I also sought to determine whether any

protective effect of physical activity in people with obesity could be explained by lower levels of inflammation and better cardiovascular and metabolic health. The findings have been accepted for publication in the British Medical Journal Open. My next study will be underway shortly, which will assess the effect of a 12-week physical activity intervention on immunological health in previously hospitalised COVID-19 patients.

Upon the completion of my PhD, I intend to use the skills and knowledge I have developed to pursue a career in research and academia.

Further, having had the privilege of studying science in higher education, I have become aware of the general lack of Black and minority ethnic representation at this level, and I hope to enlighten and encourage a more diverse range of students to view education and academia as a desirable and inclusive career path to follow.

Looking back to my time as a student at Giggleswick, I am thankful not only for the time and effort my teachers put in to support my learning, but also for instilling in me the need to identify and pursue my future goals and aspirations. Throughout my time at Giggleswick, I was always encouraged to take on the excellent opportunities available for me to reach my potential. The school’s teachers go above and beyond, with their commitment and support, to help students in achieving their goals.

Young Giggleswickians Volume 2: Where are you now?

Young OG Governor The Governors of Giggleswick School are pleased to invite applications for the post of Young OG Governor from OGs who have left the School after 2011. The Young OG Governor will serve on the Board of Giggleswick School for five years and will be expected to attend meetings of the Board and contribute to Governor committees. Previous Young OG Governors have found the experience very rewarding and have been able to contribute from their professional experience and knowledge of the

We are looking for Old Giggleswickians, to come forward and feature in our second volume of “Young Giggleswickians” where we will share the stories of Young OGs, all of whom share the common heritage of a Giggleswick education.

We are looking to share and highlight the diverse and fascinating paths that OGs have taken since leaving Giggleswick. This will also help inspire those currently at Giggleswick into interesting and new careers.

What do we need from you? If you are aged between 18 and 40, working in any field, we want you to be part of Young Giggleswickians.

Adapting with the times How Giggleswick Sport has returned and diversified since reopening Starting out as a Director of Sport in the middle of a global pandemic was not what I imagined when I accepted the role back in March 2020.

Having said that, I almost got used to an adapted and COVID secure Games Programme which ran for most of the 2020-21 Academic Year. Fast forward to September, and Sport at Giggleswick sprung back into action with great participation and ambition on show from all; pupils make the programme and without the pupils, the sports programme does not function.

Giggleswick School staff have praised their pupils ‘strength and resilience’ during ‘unprecedented times’ after they recorded excellent GCSE results.

A total of 59 students took their A Levels at Giggleswick this year, including Jack Harrison from Settle who has been accepted into the prestigious Royal Central School of Speech and Drama; Jessie Silk from Skipton who has secured a much sought after place at Edinburgh University and Tash Elsworth from Skipton who will be attending Leeds Conservatoire.

Headmaster Mark Turnbull said: “Our pupils worked incredibly hard to achieve some excellent results in unprecedented times. I can’t praise them highly enough for the way they have applied themselves to their studies whilst also remaining engaged in the full breadth of the opportunities available at Giggleswick.”

Eleanor, from Whalley, was awarded 11 9s, and is now studying A Level Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Spanish in Sixth Form. She said: “It’s what I was hoping for, but I was nervous about opening them with all the uncertainty of how things would be assessed this year. I have to say the teachers were really supportive and helped us to get through it all with as little stress as possible. I’m really pleased to be staying at Giggleswick. I’ve enjoyed the sports here, the drama department is brilliant and all of the opportunities in music.”

Leo, from Settle, achieved 11 9s, and is now studying A Level Maths, History, Theatre Studies and German. He said: “I’m very happy and I’m looking forward to the A Levels now. I’ve been coming to Giggleswick since I was three, and it’s such an important part of my life. I’ve made some great friends here, the teachers all try to tailor things to you, and I’ve loved the drama and sport opportunities. I’ve done my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, a Silver expedition and enjoyed the Combined Cadet Forces activities.”

Headmaster, Mark Turnbull, said: “After facing unprecedented challenges during their Sixth Form, the students achieved some excellent grades.

“There is no comparison with previous years – the students have had an extraordinary final four terms at school, the likes of which no one has experienced before. The way they have overcome the obstacles to their learning is a testament to their perseverance and creativity.

When coming in to School to receive their results I was struck by the warmth of their gratitude towards their teachers which is a testament to how hard everyone has worked in support of these fantastic outcomes.”

Alongside their A level study, all sixth form students at Giggleswick also take the highly regarded Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) – which allows students to research an area of interest away from their other A Level studies.

Upon returning to school, we provided pupils with a Pre-Season, ensuring we returned to the major sports programme safely so pupils playing in all squads were sustained. We tested all pupils to provide them with baseline data and an athletic development programme to support their strength development as we returned to fixtures.

The participation, ambition, and respect for the sports we have played - Rugby, Hockey and even Cricket in the late summer sunshine, at every age group from Year 3 to Year 13 has been refreshing and revitalising. The desire to compete on a Saturday has well and truly been ignited and has seen Giggleswick produce strong performances against much bigger schools.

Moving forward, the ethos and philosophy of the programme is very much underpinned by the schools’ values. The specialist sports staff and coaches are dedicated to ensuring the very best outcomes for the individual which in turn enables team success.

As we move towards the Spring Term and the major events in the sporting calendar at Giggleswick, I hope to welcome and see many familiar faces of the Old Giggleswickian community on a touchline or at a match tea.

I would also welcome the opportunity to speak to any Old Giggleswickians who have fond memories of the awarding of colours and the sentimental value of caps, blazers, and boaters.

Giggleswick has a strong history and something the sports department wishes to instil in the current Sports.

Jack Harrison had an unconditional offer to study at the prestigious Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, being one of 12 successful applicants from a field of around 30,000. He was delighted to receive an A in Drama, A* in Textiles, an A* in his EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) and a Merit 1 in Art. He said: “I fell in love with performing arts and when I decided I wanted to do it as a career, the support I received from the school, and in particular Gareth Warburton (Director of Performing Arts), was fantastic.”

Ultimately, every Director of Sport in the country was redefining the traditional model of School sport which has run for decades. It would be dismissive of the sector not to uphold some of the benefits that the Virtual School provided us with; the ability to listen to Professional Athletes, Coaches and Olympians in weekly webinars, or to compete in weekly virtual House Challenges or follow live flexibility, strength or skills sessions.

All these have elements which need to remain in any school sport programme, due to the benefits it provides pupils.

Old Giggleswickian Lodge Number 8263 on the Register of the Grand Lodge of England The frequency of meetings in different Masonic Lodges varies with some meeting once a month, others only 4 times a year. The Old Giggleswickian Lodge meets in September, November, March and May. OGs often accompanied by their wives, travel from as far as Blervie Castle in Scotland to Hennllys in Wales to our meetings.

Young Enterprise at Giggleswick The Young Enterprise programme provides opportunities for Sixth Form students with a wide range of interests to develop their skills, by creating a live company through raising share capital, design and creating a product, managing resources, generating sales and finally completing a winding up process.

The managing director learns what it takes to have oversight of a company. Financial roles learn how to manage finance as well as creating final accounts. Marketing roles allow more creative students to design promotional material and sales positions encourage interaction with the local community. There are also roles for IT, operations and sustainability.

Teams have participated in trade fairs at ASDA Harrogate, spent time at Skipton Building Society, trained with business professionals, appeared on a business podcasts and networked with senior staff at major UK and international companies.

Over 1500 teams from all over the UK participate in the Young Enterprise Company Programme competition each year. The experience gives students an advantage when applying for university, apprenticeship courses or employment.

Product at the Harrogate Christmas Trade Fair and Best Teamwork at the Yorkshire Final. The group manufactured the coasters themselves at Giggleswick, learning about a variety of operational issues such as ordering materials, planning shifts and waste reduction.

Last academic year the company ‘Puzzled?’ created puzzle books with Yorkshire and Cumbrian themed challenges. Again, social aims were very much in evidence as their product contained information on mental wellbeing and encouraged families and friends to use the book together. The team won prizes for their teamwork and online organisation as well as the runner up prize in the national online sales competition.

During lockdown, with face to face meetings abandoned we met by Zoom but continued our Charitable donations enabling Grants to continue to be awarded in the Yorkshire area and nationally with over £100 million given in Grants over the past 5 years, fully funded by Freemasons across the Country.

The Museum has a vast collection of historical artefacts including, a collection celebrating the famous bard of Scotland Robert Burns, an active Member of Lodge St. David (Tarbolton) Mauchline No. 133 in Ayrshire, whose Address to a Haggis (1787) is still used at Masonic Burns Night dinners, usually after the Haggis has been paraded in to the traditional sound of bagpipes.

As restrictions were eased and Lodges were allowed to meet again, an Annual Festival of School Lodges was able to convene at Kingswood School Lodge in Bath. During lockdown the Federation of School Lodges awarded a £4,000 Grant to help the purchase of iPads for schoolchildren. During the weekend, attended by a group of 4 OGs and their wives, a visit to Bath Masonic Hall was arranged, situated on Old Orchard Street in the heart of Bath. The Lodge Room has been

The quality of their product, presentation and company report saw them crowned Yorkshire and Humber Company of the Year and participation in the national final in London, hosted by former BBC Business correspondent Stephanie McGovern.

With his Variety Club background, he helped set up the first ever livery charitable committee during his year in office, which initiated five marathon funds - the principal source of all future fundraising.

Nowell 1945-50 A Man of Industry, A Heart of Gold Born in Leeds in December 1935, Paul came to Giggleswick at the age of 9 in January 1945 joining Catteral Hall and later moving into Nowell House, where he remained until leaving in December 1950. His passions whilst at Giggleswick were football and maths, leading to a life-long love for Leeds United FC. Unable to do his National Service, due to poor eyesight, Paul went into the family shoe business Stylo Group, with his brother Arnold.

In 1962, Paul persuaded his brothers to allow him to set up a separate sports division of the company, which he named Stylo Matchmakers.

His first aim was to produce a national brand golf shoe at an affordable price. As the success in this field took off, Paul turned his attention to football boots. Whilst the idea of celebrity endorsements was not a new idea, originating in 1923 in the US, Paul realised that rising postwar income meant that British sports fans would pay extra for endorsed footwear. Under Paul's marketing genius and astute driving force in business, endorsement contracts were signed, with some of the world's most famous sports legends all donning the Stylo Matchmakers footwear. Amongst these were Pele (signed in 1965), George Best, Kevin Keegan, Billy Bremner and golfing greats Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper, and Nick Faldo, (who in 1989 was wearing Stylo Matchmakers shoes when he won his US Masters at Augusta).

Paul made things happen from concept to conclusion with great charisma and inspiration.

When Stylo Matchmakers sold its millionth pair of the George Best football boot, he presented

George with a specially commissioned gold boot at a launch at The Playboy Club in London.

The boot is now considered a choice piece of memorabilia of that era.

He was ambitious and a risk-taker. An enthusiastic supporter of big ideas. He once chartered a 130-seater jet to fly 120 shoe buyers to Paris for the weekend for another launch of the George Best football boot. He then took orders on the return flight warning that orders may have to be rationed on a first come first served basis. He sold a whole years’ production before landing in Manchester!

Not just a man of industry though, Paul was also a generous philanthropist and his involvement with the Variety Club in Leeds during the 70s and 80s saw the charity achieve record financial years during his years as Chairman. In 1982-84 Paul chaired the building committee for the extension to the Variety Club of Leeds non-invasive children's heart wing at Killingbeck Hospital. It was opened by HRH Prince Philip and the unit was thereafter named Mountbatten Non-Invasive Heart Wing. In the next 3 years, as Chair, Paul and his team also presented the hospital with a much-needed children’s heart scanning machine.

In 1990, Paul left Stylo and founded Finest Brands International Ltd (FBI). His new company became a major player in the equestrian market by first acquiring Champion, a leading brand of riding hats, and then later Toggi - equestrian clothing. The company he founded is still prospering today.

Paul continued his work in the community and in 1991 he was appointed as a Justice of the Peace at Bradford Magistrates Court.

In 1986 at Yorkshire Television, Richard Whiteley, OG, introduced Paul to Lea, a press officer of 10 years.

They married a year later and remained committed to each other for the rest of Paul’s life. In 2000, Paul suffered a devastating stroke that left him paralysed, in a wheelchair with total loss of speech for the remaining 20 years of his life. Paul did not let his disability stop his enthusiasm for good deeds however, and for 12 years, under Professor Rosemary Varley, who headed the speech therapy research departments at Sheffield University, Paul assisted with great enthusiasm in research efforts of the PhD students there.

Paul’s memory lives on in the brand of Stylo Matchmakers, as the new owners pay homage to their creator on their website. With Stylo being such a synonymous name in golf and football, it begs the question, how many of you have played golf or scored a goal wearing Stylo, not realising the significant connection to a fellow OG? Style, 1939 – 43 In 2020, I had the honour of getting to know Patrick Swann, who gifted to the School, in 1994, the Swann Shield, presented as the Outdoor Pursuits Prize, awarded on Speech Day each year.

Patrick arrived at Catteral Hall in 1939 and boarded in Style House until 1943. During his time at Giggleswick, Patrick joined the School Officer Training Corps (OTC). Clearly inspired by a visit to the school by an Officer of the Indian Army, on leaving Giggleswick he enlisted in the Officers’ Training School (OTS) in Bangalore and was subsequently seconded by the British Army to the Indian Army’s Parachute Regiment. On his return to Britain, he served as an Officer with the Parachute Regiment Training Battalion based in Aldershot.

After the war, Patrick moved to Aberdour, Scotland to resume his pre-war training in Architecture and Town Planning and it was here that he met his wife, Christine. As a local authority town planner, his career took him and Christine first to London, working for London County Council; then, after his children Vanessa and Michael were born, to planning roles in Bexhill and Rye, East Sussex, Caernarfon, North Wales, and Northampton. The family then settled in Warwickshire, where Patrick worked in the Planning Department of Warwickshire County Council (WCC), becoming County Planning Officer in 1974 – 1982. He moved onwards in his career, joining the IDC Group, owned by AMEC plc in Stratford-Upon-Avon, as in-house Planning Consultant. Finally, he went into private practice, consulting for New College, Oxford for over 20 years until the age of 90.

Patrick’s notable achievements include setting up a new Industrial Production Unit (IPU) for Warwickshire County Council - uniquely for this, a ‘Shire’ County and under the control of the Town Planning Department. This successfully promoted the advantages of Warwickshire as a desirable location for employment growth and provided serviced land to attract jobs and new investment.

He also initiated the creation of several Country Parks in the County and in recognition of his work, The Swann Pool in Kingsbury Water Park, near Sutton Coldfield is named after Patrick.

Patrick was an accomplished draughtsman and illustrator and in later life was known to be generous with his time and skills, often providing architectural advice or drawings for no fee – other than a gift of his favourite bottle of Madeira wine. He was a keen yachtsman, regularly travelling to the south coast to sail his boat.

Patrick passed away on the 18th January 2021 at Warwick Myton Hospice, aged 93. I attended

“Patrick was one of the last survivors of a generation of planners who had the opportunity to plan in the true sense of the word, before lawyers, numbercrunching and algorithms took over and turned it from an art into a system.” one of his colleagues remarked.

He was admired for his professionalism, ethics, and his leadership. He was a passionate campaigner for development causes and worked closely with his daughter Vanessa on redevelopment options for Cockpit Arts, a London-based business incubator for craftspeople. Together they successfully campaigned to ensure that this charitable social enterprise could continue to operate, develop, and grow without threat of private commercial development.

I rather wish that I had known Patrick for more time that he had left during his life. I lament that, at OG Day in June 2019, he would have been the most senior OG present, and I would have had the honour to have him place the Presidential Chain onto my shoulders. It wasn’t to be.

John Sturgess, “Sturg”, was truly a man of many parts. He joined Giggleswick from Portora Royal School in Northern Ireland in 1978 to inaugurate the teaching of Business Studies.

To peruse the shelves of his study in Shute House where he became housemaster in 1986, one could easily see what a polymath he was. His love of history in the tomes on the English Civil War and the Wars of the Roses was counterbalanced by coaching volumes on Rugby, Sailing (for which he won a Blue whilst at Oxford), Rowing and Economics.

A private man, he lived a generally simple life. He had a routine, or rather a series of routines for different geographical locations and ‘woe be tide’ anybody trying to negotiate some flexibility. If you’re in the UK it’s totally impossible to do anything until you have read the Daily Telegraph from cover to cover, obviously unless it’s Sunday then it’s the Times! John’s single indulgence was skiing. His love of skiing came from his parents, who would have been there in the pioneering days of alpine sports.

For 25 years he owned a modest flat in La Plagne, France, which he visited for a fortnight every January. He enjoyed having company there and was a brilliant and generous host.

Patrick is survived by his daughter Vanessa and grandson, Matt.

Of course, his passion was for kayaking where his own achievements as a competitor were exceeded as a nationally renowned coach. It is here, that one can safely say that he changed the lives of those he encountered, forging their kayaking careers and instilling the values that are required by every sportsman and woman. One of his former Gigg boys extolled his guidance “set the foundation for generations of young people to become who they became”. Qualified to teach caving, rowing, sailing, rugby union, skiing and weightlifting, he loved the outdoors. He was instrumental in introducing kayaking and canoeing to PGL. Many of those that he coached at Gigg and further afield attained national selection through his legendary de-briefs and his intuitive understanding of how to improve through meticulous preparation.

An active man until shortly before his illness that took him suddenly on 8th January 2021, he was kayaking in France only weeks before. All those whose lives he touched will miss his ebullience and cerebral views on life.

R. Colin Green Staff 1967 – 97 Evergreen and fading not in winter as he donned his dinky shorts to coach and referee rugby and display his vast expertise in controlling the flow of a game, Rowland Colin Green always enjoyed a rapport with his students that few teachers ever match.

Whether teaching mathematics to those who found the subject an abject trial or passing on his knowledge and skills on the rugby and cricket fields, in the gymnasium or in the swimming pool, RCG was a quite outstanding schoolmaster.

His ability to boost the confidence of all students no matter their skill level, to spot the faults in technique, aided by his special brand of dry humour, drew the very best out of his young charges. As a referee and umpire his decisions on the field were always respected, and if RCG's finger were raised after an LBW appeal, you could guarantee that you really were “plum”.

Colin came to us at Giggleswick as Gymnastics instructor and teacher of Mathematics.

Immediately attached as resident tutor in Style under renowned housemaster Warwick Brookes, he remained in this demanding role for 10 years until 1978. It is difficult to imagine RCG, labelled as a "tyro", even in his distant youth, such was the ease with which he handled all the issues involved with the education of the young. As a golfer his “hook” far exceeded his equivalent skill in cricket. Perhaps it should not pass without observation that his frequent jokes were often of a quality to match his name, and as for being "greenfingered", he confessed to a preference for a covering of snow to conceal the imperfections of his lawn and flower arrangements. His witticisms in the staffroom have been much missed since his retirement in 1997 as has his special technique for turning on and off the lights with the aid of a tennis ball.

Those who knew him will miss RCG for his wit and warmth, his skill and self-deference. Those who never did know might wish that they had.

Walter Morrison: We’ll have it here Brassington!

Rededication of the Chapel and Celebration of the life of Walter Morrison

he 18th of December this year marks the 100th anniversary of the death of perhaps the greatest character in the modern history of Craven District. In this era of statue demolition and recontextualising of history, it is the anniversary of a man who should by rights already have the grandest of statues erected in a location of prominence. In fact, probably the greatest memorial to this remarkable man of letters, politics, learning and philanthropy is our wonderful chapel at Giggleswick School.

The son of a publican in Hampshire, Walter Morrison’s father James, was a haberdasher in Todd’s warehouse in London. Being of considerable business acumen, James soon became a partner and married Mr Todd’s daughter, Mary Ann. He took over the business, rapidly expanding it, based upon selling goods of quality at the keenest prices by procuring the raw materials to manufacture in bulk. In fact, he is believed to have been the first to sell goods for 1 shilling and 11 pence rather than 2 shillings, thus giving the purchaser the feeling that they had bought a keenly priced item. He also cornered the market in black chiffon just before the country went into mourning upon the death of Queen Charlotte!

GIGG:NEWS Feature spirit of enquiry and endeavour brought him to extend his “tour” however, from continental Europe to the Near East, North Africa, and the Americas.

His belief and interest in the power of education leading him to be totally responsible for building two schools: Kirkby Malham United School and the small one at Malham Tarn. He provided the site and paid the costs of building the new school and a schoolhouse so that the master could be properly accommodated in the pursuance of his duties.

Always at the forefront of donors to Eton and Oxford he gave £30,000 to the university, £10,000 for a Readership of Egyptology, £10,000 for its first professorial pension scheme and £10,000 for the study of agriculture. This was followed in 1920 by an unprecedented donation of £50,000 to the Bodleian Library. Nearer to home he gave £10,000 for a new Agricultural School at Leeds University. A member of the Court of the University, he had a close relationship with Leeds, it was the Vice Chancellor, Sir Walter Sadler, who gave the address at his funeral.

People often ask why we have the rather old fashioned but unique diorama of Palestine in the wall outside the Memorial Library. This is because amongst the many interests such as eastern architecture, raised by his travels on the Grand Tour, Morrison had become fascinated by the lands of former Palestine or the “Holy land”. He became a trustee of the Palestine Exploration Fund and gifted them their headquarters in central London. The fund exists to this day.

With rapidly growing wealth James became the wealthiest commoner in the country, his means far outstripping many of the aristocracy.

Believing fervently that one’s talents and advantages should be used to the benefit of those less fortunate than oneself and using his wealth and status, he entered public service as an MP. Thus, mixing with artists, inventors and thinkers of the day, the young Walter grew up surrounded by beautiful things and the most interesting people. “Unlike many Victorian fathers, James seems to have had a very open relationship with his children, and from an early stage they were able to be very honest and outspoken in their ideas and suggestions to him – he treated them very much as equals”.

One of eleven siblings including four other brothers, Walter was given responsibility on reaching his 21st birthday for the Malham Tarn Estate in 1857.

Thus began his 64-year association with Malhamdale and Craven.

Educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, Morrison had acquired considerable sporting success as an oarsman and had a love of the outdoors. His First-class degree acquired, he completed his education as was common for the gentry by embarking upon the “Grand Tour”. His

Despite all the wealth at his disposal, Morrison lived a simple life, his house at Malham Tarn was modest for a man of his great means, not having eleven children to provide for, as his father had. He was an incredibly generous man, giving funds widely to a variety of causes. Hating publicity, many of his gifts were made anonymously and coming to light only after his death. A man of great integrity, he would never use his money to buy political advantage and certainly not to buy honours or titles. Thus, he died a commoner whose memorials were the deeds he performed for the locality. It is his relationship with Giggleswick School that is of the greatest pertinence of course for us. Never simply a figurehead, he was involved for sixty years as Governor for all that time and Chairman of the Governors twice. Taking a detailed interest in all the school’s affairs even when unable to attend meetings because of his political or other commitments, he wrote long detailed letters expressing his views on items on the agenda, as he did with other organisations. Famously when attending Governors meetings at the school he would walk the five miles from Tarn House over Attermire and back in the day and in all weathers.

Morrison made two fundamentally important impacts upon the future of the school during this time. His gift of the chapel is of most common knowledge but prior to this he was prominently involved in the planning and execution of the “break

out” from the original school site on St Alkelda’s Garth to the building of the “Fourth School” on the present “new” site above Mill Hill Lane. This project allowed the first building of the integrated boarding houses in one purpose-built location. It also coincided with the appointment of George Style as Housemaster in 1869. Mr Style wished to advance the organised structure of boarding as seen in the great schools in the south, recognising the personal benefits of an ordered and structured boarding community where young men learned, endeavoured and grew up together. Hitherto, boarding had been a haphazard system where young men from far flung villages and towns “lodged” with senior masters including the Headmaster and Usher (Deputy Head) as well as with land ladies in the town. Members of the latter system were said to be in Town House. This “breakout” therefore facilitated the expansion of the school from as few as 36 scholars in 1864 to 200 by 1875. The school thus becoming one of the pre-eminent schools in northern England able to directly challenge established institutions such as Stonyhurst and Ampleforth. Dr Style, with the keen encouragement and support of Mr Morrison going on to make ground-breaking changes to the curriculum from the classical curriculum to a science-based curriculum which was effectively unheard of at the time amongst the great schools. Such foresight and imagination which were Morrison’s trademarks remain at the heart of thinking in the school to this day.

During this time, this remarkable man was also expanding his commercial interests in Argentina and applying his formidable energies to a political life which began with election to Parliament in 1861 as the member for Plymouth at the age of 25. He stood down in 1900 after two further terms as the member

for Skipton. He remained heavily involved however, until his death in 1921. A man of prodigious energy and principle he was noted for never simply following the party whip if he disagreed with his party’s policies and this led to him crossing the floor from the Liberals to the Unionists over the issue of home rule for Ireland.

Already a wealthy man when he inherited Malham Tarn estate, Morrison spent a lifetime nurturing and extending his business interests with increasing wealth. At his death he had shares in several hundred companies, the most significant of which were the Craven Bank and the Argentine Railway Company. The Craven Bank served the local rural population and with Mr Morrison as its Chairman it ensured a sympathetic and tailored service which was almost unique at the time. The Craven Bank was absorbed by Martins Bank and later was subsumed

by Barclays Bank, which still has a branch in Settle.

In Argentina, as a result of his family involvement with the Central Argentine Railway Company, which he chaired for 20 years, he is perhaps best known and remembered. Indeed, a whole town in the Province of Cordoba is named Morrison since 1907, given the positive impact that the opening up of the interior of that vast country by the railway had.

Not untypical of the era, Walter Morrison was intensely patriotic (thus his opposition to home rule for Ireland) and as such he was a great supporter of the local “Craven” volunteers which he helped found, known as the North Craven Rifle Corps. Later that year the Settle volunteers rifle range was established on Attermire Hill, which later also included the practise trenches in the same place.

Morrison paid for the construction of the Drill Hall in Settle, which of course is another important social facility in the town to this day. The North Craven Volunteers became the Craven Territorials and were eventually absorbed into the 1/6th Battalion of the Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment serving across all the theatres of the Great War in Flanders.

In great ill health by the time of the armistice, Mr Morrison had one last gift for the area. It took the form of a book entitled ‘Craven’s Part in the Great War’, which was to be presented to every exserviceman or to the family in the case of men who

had been killed. The original idea was to have details of all the men who had served in the war, but this proved to be an impossible task, so it became a memorial book which listed the facts, mostly with photographs, of over 1500 men who died. Each area had its own presentation of the books and the one for Malhamdale took place on September 24th 1921 when Morrison unexpectedly turned up to make the presentations. He was too frail to get out of his car and it turned out to be his last public appearance as he passed away in December of that year. It was fitting that it should be his last task, thanking the people of the Dale he loved for fighting for the country he loved.

Morrison was indeed a man of many parts, so much more than a “Grand old Man”, which indeed he became. Such polymaths seem to be few and far between today. The Governors of Giggleswick had been debating for some time a suitable way to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and Mr Morrison famously wrote his letter to “Style” proposing the building of a chapel for the school, adding that it should have a dome as an architectural experiment as a hint to others, as the country has so few domed churches. This latter stipulation almost certainly was a product of Morrison’s travels on the Grand Tour.

Walking up to “the knoll above the cricket field” with local builder and joiner Thomas Brassington in March 1897, Morrison pushed his umbrella into the ground and told his companion “We’ll have it here Brassington”. The chapel stands today as the most visible reminder of the great man’s philanthropy, his vision and commitment to the places that he valued and loved. This remarkably finished and detailed building is the place where our alumni all return first, to meet fellow OGs, to be married or eventually even, to make their final journey. As such there can be no greater memorial to this wonderful man who made such a difference to our school and its future than this building so highly prized by us.

The Morrison March

To mark the 100th anniversary of Walter Morrison’s death, the boys from Morrison House embarked on a 17-mile circular walk to raise money for SELFA. Joined on the walk by OG David Clarke (M, 15), the boys raised a total of £2,000 in memory of the local philanthropist, in which their house is named after.

Year 12 student, Isaac Larkin, said: “This year is the 100-year anniversary of Walter Morrison’s death so we wanted to mark the occasion by continuing the charitable practices he was known for. As the boys of Morrison House, we have always represented Walter Morrison’s name with immense pride.

“When we started to plan the walk, we knew that our route would pass by his house at Malham Tarn, his grave in Kirkby Malham and the Giggleswick chapel.”

He added: “We wanted to use the event as a fundraiser, so we began searching for a local charity which supported local children.

SELFA was a natural choice as they support over 400 children with their vision of a community where all young people are celebrated and know they belong.

“By the time our walk came around we had raised £2000, something we think Walter would have been immensely proud of.”

Sports Stories

GIGG:NEWS Golf News Thursday’s course was Crail Balcomie Links. There was no formal competition to play for, only pride, but once again we were playing the wind as well as the challenging course. Paul McMahon surged up to the top of the leaderboard again as he had at Ladybank, scoring 35 points. Not far behind with 32 points were Chris, Gary, and Alex.

After lunch, those leaving for home bid farewell and the rest travelled down to play the Baberton course near Edinburgh. Nick, Garry, Rob and I enjoyed our fourball. The wind still blew, but the course was a pleasant undulating parkland. The high points were Rob’s drives, which went a long way, though not necessarily in the right direction. He finished the round in style though, with a magnificent birdie.

OGGS TOUR 2021

A windy but wonderful week in the Kingdom of Fife A windy but wonderful week with our intrepid pod of six of 2020 almost doubling in size to eleven. We enjoyed old friends again and welcomed a new boy, Paul McMahon, and despite the wind some pretty wonderful golf was played.

Arriving Monday lunchtime at Ladybank, we ventured forth to play for the (missing!)

Yorkshire v Lancashire trophy. A lovely course, but tight with trees and heather. Unfortunately even the Tykes best endeavours were not enough for Yorkshire to retain the trophy. After deducting the worst scores from each team Lancashire won by 134 points to 116. Notable scores were Paul McMahon and Steve Hartley with 36 points each, and Nick Jefferies and Alex Driver with 33 points each.....and of course David Crossley’s 32 points definitely deserves a mention.

Dinner that night was memorable for two heartfelt eulogies. Firstly, Nick J remembered our dear friend Billy Haggas, who organised and graced so many of our tours. Nick had spoken to Billy only two days before his death, and even then Billy was with us and insisted that we drink fine wine for him. Consequently there were bottles of Chateauneuf du Pape gracing our table. Then Bob Barker reminded us of all the fine things that Alan Wilson had done for Yorkshire golf over the years. Bob long enjoyed friendship with Alan, and left the tour early on

Thursday morning so that he could attend his funeral.

Tuesday morning off we went to Scotscraig.

Nick organised a competition between “young” and “old”. Once again the worst individual scores from each team were deducted, and unfortunately youth (or relative youth) prevailed.

The Oldies were beaten by 105 points to 129.

Grafton Morrish The Grafton Morrish is a foursomes match play tournament played off scratch and is contested by public school old boy teams from all over the UK. Schools must successfully navigate a regional qualifying competition in order to make it to the finals (played each year at Royal West Norfolk and Hunstanton golf clubs in Norfolk.

On Wednesday it was Lundin Links, formidable in the wind, and the competition for the Paley Cup, which is the individual tour championship, and for the infamous Hagbag trophy for nearest the pin. The first five holes were into the wind, and some of us struggled. Alex Driver came in with a fantastic 36 points to become the 2021 champion and Gary Hartley won the Hagbag for nearest the pin on the short but tricky par 3 fifth hole.

Wednesday night was prize giving, well lubricated and well fed, we applauded Alex as he collected the Paley Cup and Gary H as he clutched the Hagbag. In its absence Lancashire were awarded the Yorkshire/Lancashire trophy.

So, that just left the Cameron Cup, awarded for valour or whatever other excuse Nick can find.

John Ellacott was the proud recipient, for his bravery in wearing Nick’s trousers at Lundin Links, which he donned when he found his shorts rather draughty. Actually, he wasn’t brave.... he was desperate!

Giggleswick School were one of the founding schools of the Grafton Morrish in 1963, however, this is the first occasion that Giggleswick have entered a team into the competition. We made it to the Quarter Finals. Giggleswick had 2 very close matches at the Royal West Norfolk GC beating Hurstpierpoint in the morning and Bishop Veseys in the afternoon. Moving across to Hunstanton on Saturday, we played and beat Highgate in the morning. In the afternoon, we played Malvern, last years’ runners up, who proved too strong for us, however, all matches were close. The eventual winners this year were Millfield, who beat Malvern in the final. Brook Coward and Simon Walker were strong throughout. Chris Woolsey and Adam Uttley along with Mike Gray and Ben Baldwin played some very good competitive golf.

Mention should be made of Graeme Brackenbury (C, 77) and Joe Stamper (P, 11) who both played in the qualifying round at Huddersfield GC. Without their help, we would not have made it to the finals.

Pickleball English Nationals 2021 How do you keep an ex Giggleswick teacher of 38 years, who lived and loved teaching, happy and busy in retirement....encourage him to play pickleball!

KJ takes the National DH Championship Title Katherine Sharp (KJ) (St, 12) took up mountain biking at the age of 21. Within her first year she sat Top 5 in the UK and 15 in the World in the Enduro mountain biking discipline.

Enduro is a two-day race (6-8 hours per day), where the rider climbs to the top of numerous mountains and the race is decided on who can get from the top to the bottom in the quickest time. In KJ’s words, ‘A tad crazy’.

After two years KJ found herself ‘hitting a wall’.

In her own words, ‘I couldn’t keep up with my life, I was working 30hrs a week, on the edge of completing my Nutrition Master’s Degree and trying to race full time, what a nightmare of a life’.

Heading into 2019, KJ paused racing, completed her Master’s Degree, set up an online Nutrition and PT business ‘Nutrition Savvy’, and, moved to Whistler, Canada. Most will know Whistler as a skiing resort. However, come summer, Whistler becomes one of the most famous mountain biking locations in the world. KJ’s sponsors set her up with a DH bike and supported her to take the time to switch from Enduro to DH whilst in Canada.

Downhill (DH), the rider simply has to get from the top of one track to the bottom in the quickest time. KJ explains, ‘Enduro is not as dangerous, you can’t physically ride on your limit for 6-8 hours, whereas Downhill, it’s a maximum of 5 minutes, you only have one race run and the jumps, drops and features are huge!’.

Sadly, the 2020 pandemic called off all UK Downhill races. KJ headed into the 2021 season

with a roar, taking all UK National level wins and the National Championship Title. In KJ’s playful words ‘oooopsie, fastest woman in the UK’.

Unfortunately, KJ sustained a shoulder injury (AC separation), at the Downhill World Championships. Within 4-weeks she was back riding and attempting to retain her UK national lead. With one race to go, KJ needs the win to come out of 2021 with the National Series Title.

KJ aspires, ‘I already have the National Championship Title, but it’d be a sweet ending to the year to also take the National Series Title.

Quite the achievement within my first year of racing Downhill’.

Moving into 2022, KJ now has a place on the Great British team for all World Level Downhill races. She expressed the following, ‘I guess after this year I’ve opened doors, many doors. I’m keen to get faster and I’m keen to win more races, but overall, I just want to enjoy every part of my life as much as I can. Bring on 2022’.

Katherine Sharp (St, 12)

After retiring in 2018, Steve known to many as Mr Heap (Staff member from 1980 2018) worked part time in two local primary schools plus, according to him, worked ‘full time’ in the garden of our newly moved to home in Austwick. As good as this was, the spirit of competitiveness, teamwork, and fun, honed by teaching and coaching many years of Giggleswick sport, had to be reincarnated in some way. A season returning to club tennis rejuvenated his sporting juices, but when he was lured to the intriguingly named emerging sport of Pickleball, a new chapter began.

Pickleball, America’s fastest growing sport, with the combination skill set of tennis, badminton and table tennis was described to Steve as a sport where...’What looks easy, isn’t’! What looks impressive, often doesn’t work and where different players have so many different ideas on how best to play the game, it can all get very confusing. Similar challenges as coaching U9’s rugby I suppose!

A couple of years (interrupted by you know what) and many pickleball sessions later both indoor and outdoor, Steve entered his first Tournament, The English Nationals 2021 at Bolton in August. In the 60+ 3.0 category he won the Silver medal in mixed doubles and the Bronze in men’s doubles. He is now totally addicted to the sport....and I have to say, so am I!

GIGG:NEWS Sports News Reporting Rugby – Touchline to Online As a reporter, my professional life changed radically during the COVID crisis, instead of covering Rugby Union games for The Yorkshire Post and The Rugby Paper in person, I watched Championship games involving Doncaster Knights, Yorkshire's top club, via the internet which screened games as they were happening. I then wrote my copy from the pictures and spoke to players and coaches on the phone afterwards. Covering Yorkshire cricket for The Cricket Paper was also different.

Instead of seeing face to face, players such as David Malan, Gary Ballance, Harry Brook and Dom Bess, interviews had to be done on the phone which is fine up to a point, but interviews like that lack the personal touch. Reporting now in the autumn is more or less back to normal as I can attend games. Some interviews, though, for The Yorkshire Post magazine are still done via Zoom. I am also preparing to do a feature for The Cricketer magazine with Bill Athey, the former England batsman who played for Yorkshire, Gloucestershire and Sussex between 1976-1997.

He has introduced the game to Giggleswick Junior School’s Head of Sport Fergus Ogilvie, they have even had a few games followed by a pint of course! It is a brilliant game to introduce in schools and Fergus has set the ball rolling...pardon the pun!

GIGG:NEWS OG Events was delighted to pass on the chain of office to Nick Westhead, our current OG Club President.

The first weekend back at School also meant sport fixtures had returned for the first occasion in 18 months, so we were very excited to be able to have an afternoon featuring matches from the 1st XI Hockey v Pocklington at Eshtons, ending in a 3-1 victory to Giggleswick and 1st XV Rugby v Ashville College, smashing them with a final score of 27-0. It was well worth the wait to see a dominant performance from both teams and a moment to savour as our community of parents and OGs came together and connected on the touchline. Whilst Ashville were in the means of being defeated, our prosecco and refreshment horse box was available for OGs to enjoy. Our afternoon concluded with OGs

being invited to the Hobson Room for our infamous and scrumptious match teas, these were certainly enjoyed by many and a lovely way to end a fantastic day.

As always, thank you to everyone attending, it was a pleasure to be able to finally host our OGs back on campus. We look forward to seeing you all with good heart, next year on Saturday 25th June, as OG Day returns to Top Pitch! So don’t forget your cricket and tennis kits, your sun cream (Yorkshire weather depending!) and a bit of strength for Tug of War, when we revert to our memorable summer event!

Events Review OG Day finally returns 18 September 2021 After multiple postponements, we finally welcomed over 120 OGs and their guests back to Giggleswick for the annual gathering of OGs, friends and families from across the decades. The September weather held out and we were thankful to not see the rainfall we did back in July! This year was extra special, albeit slightly different to our usual OG Day format, not only since this was the first in-person OG event to take place since the pandemic began, but because it also gave the opportunity to welcome OGs back to the School during the start and reopening of a busy Autumn Term.

OGs began the day by gathering for another memorable Chapel service, again one of many firsts since the pandemic hit. The School only comes alive when students, teachers and Old Giggleswickians come together and with a brief hiatus where Reverend Ladds spent many months preaching to an empty chapel on screen, the Chaplain expressed how truly welcoming it was to have OGs back together for our service.

The service was even more unique on this occasion, as OGs came together to perform in the Old Giggleswickian Choir conducted by Mr Darren Everhart, Director of Music. OGs practised remotely the Anthem, “The Lord bless you and keep you –

John Rutter” many weeks beforehand, and with only a quick 30-minute pre-service collective practice they all sounded spectacular on the day. It is with great thanks to Darren for his support in making this a possibility. Swiftly followed was welcome drinks and speeches by the Chair of Governors, Alex Thursby and the Headmaster, Mark Turnbull in the Sharpe Library, which would be his last before his departure in December. OGs were also uniquely offered tours of their Old Boarding Houses before heading for lunch in the dining hall. Gary Hartley, this year’s Past President, thanked the committee for his time in office even though circumstances of his presidency had certainly made it difficult for him to meet any OGs in what has been a very strange year for all. Peter Wilson-Fish (C, 50) our eldest OG in attendance gave a heartwarming thank you and

COGS Hockey Strikes a Hit Giggleswick Activity Weekend Challenge March 2021 Back in March, whilst the School and the rest of the world seemed to be under yet another Lockdown, the School Community came together virtually to participate over

After much time passing, in May 2021, Ed Buck and I sat on a bench outside the Fives courts and fixed a provisional date of 17 September 2021 for the first Community of Giggleswick School (COGS) hockey fixture; the aim being to mark the return of school sport, after many months of no fixtures. Hope then turned into reality, with OG Day planned for the following day. A weekend for OGs in Gods own county was on the cards.

The parents and staff made up one team for the more senior OGs to take on and the second match of the evening was to consist of last year’s 1st XI Hockey Squad, (as they had missed many of their matches due to COVID restrictions), against the current 1st XI Hockey Squad.

Sarah Crombie, Chair of the GSPA and her team organised drinks and made their own pizzas with use of the School’s pizza oven, which was much appreciated by everyone.

So, the first match kicked off the evening, consisting of OGs vs Staff/Parents. The team seemed to have a very formidable back line with

Dan Cook filling the goal and two Kirkby Lonsdale backs with Ben Harris and Neil Gemmell. However, I should not have underestimated OG Nicola Ehlinger and her powers of persuading the good and the greatest hockey players of past to turn out. Thanks to Nicola doing the groundwork, the game ended with a 2 – 0 victory to the OGs. Next up was the 1st XI Squad, captained by Maud Humphries and our most recent OG leavers from last year. This proved a tense match, to and fro it went, the School were much fitter and the OGs took time to get together. The OGs scored eventually, the School then threw new players into the team and the crowd came into play. The 40 or so OGs, students and staff roaring both teams on with a final score of 3 – 2 to the School’s 1st team. It was a great night, with lots of young OGs, and I hope they enjoyed it as much as us older ones watching. We will endeavour to do it again next year. Thanks to Ed Buck for all the work he did, it was great night.

Held in the heart of London’s West End, the Terrace bar was the perfect place to enjoy the evening. With an impressive attendance, our newer OGs and less recent leavers enjoyed catching up over drinks and canapés. The evening was rounded off by a Thank You speech by our current President, Nick Westhead. Hopefully we will have the opportunity

OGs Scottish Adventure OG Benedict Willacy (M, 15) showed a fantastic effort in the Giggleswick Community Activity Challenge by setting foot on a Scottish adventure, by stomping his way through 143km of the Fife Costal Path from North Queensferry to Dundee within the space of 48 hours.

The Fife Coastal Path runs stretches for over 183km, offering views of miles of golden beaches and dramatic coastlines and reminders of Scotland's history. The path links to some of Scotland's most picturesque fishing villages and the town of St. Andrews, also known as the ‘Home of Golf’, boasting 7 golf courses including the Old Course, the most famous course in the World.

As the newest and youngest committee member, I was handed the task to seek out a new venue.

Phoebe Lebrecht (St, 08) and I bounced some ideas off each other, a combination of funky rooftops and hotels. Following a couple of visits round some of the favourites, I gave my feedback to the Development Office. A few days later I was happy to hear the Headmaster had given the thumbs up.

a weekend in the Giggleswick Community Activity Challenge, which marked the final weekend of our Virtual School. Pupils, Staff, Parents and Old Giggleswickians logged and recorded their sporting distances, as part of a competition to see which part of the community could record the biggest combined distance.

OGs covered a total distance of 1063.9km, including runs, walks and bike rides recorded from across the globe. OGs from New South Wales Australia, Pittsburgh America, Dubai, Barcelona, Frankfurt and Vietnam all joined in a virtual effort. We are pleased to announce that with the combined effort of our OG Community, the Old Giggleswickians covered the 2nd largest combined distance. The whole community in total covered 3,600km.

"I can definitely trace the origins of my passion for mountaineering and endurance events to my time at Giggleswick, so it was wonderful to get involved. There's a certain irony that we all amicably loathed Mr Ogilvie for making us do cross country on Monday evenings in Catteral, and here I am over a decade later catching up with Euan, in St Andrews after many Km of running and walking!"

I had phenomenal teachers who nurtured my sense of adventure and now I find myself possessing the skills and experience required to plan my own adventures, even at the last minute. Benedict spent the weekend sleeping outdoors amongst the coastal woodland, whilst en route to St Andrews in order to meet fellow OG Euan Ogilvie (P, 17), where they both reunited and completed the final few miles together.

Future Regional Events

Committee Transformation Programme The overriding objective of this long-term project is better engagement with OGs, locally, nationally, and globally. This starts with the introduction of regional hubs throughout the UK to provide OGs living some distance from school the opportunity to meet fellow OGs and keep abreast of developments at Giggleswick. For this vision to gain traction, OGs must come forward. Liz Cooke (N, 78), President Elect based in the South-West and James Burns in New York have started the ball rolling.

Nick Westhead (P, 83) Since moving to the New York area in 2014, I have been fortunate enough to have kept my close ties to the school and OG club - With frequent trips back to the UK for OG Day, London drinks and many other events. For me there is something incredibly

special in being able to reminisce and share our collective memories with other Giggleswickians, while also staying up to date with news of current life at the School.

It was welcome news that in July of this year, I was elected on to the OG committee as the first overseas member. I felt compelled to run for election to unite and embrace the OG community that resides in North America. In the coming months, I will be reaching out directly to Old Giggleswickians around the United States. I am really looking forward to connecting with you all. With any luck I will be setting up a few in person events across the nation for 2022.

My initial thoughts are a Saturday lunchtime throughout Spring, enabling OGs and their partners from Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Dorset, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall (not wanting them left out on a limb!) to meet. I would gratefully receive any ideas, and suggestions or offers of help. A rough indication of interest would be amazingly helpful, and I look to finalise a date very shortly. Giggleswick Reads News From the Library The Sharpe Library, named after OG Norman Sharpe (Town, 1925) is well used since the start of this school year. Due to COVID restrictions last year, the library was only accessible to Year 12 and Year 13 pupils. Therefore, there is a lot of pent-up demand among the younger year groups. In the Lower School, popular books to borrow are Holly Jackson's 'A Good Girl's Guide to Murder' trilogy, anything written by Robin Stevens, and books related to Warhammer 40,000.

Among older readers, Kate Atkinson's books remain popular, along with those written by new favourites such as Sally Rooney and Richard Osman. There is a new area in the library this year called 'In the Media' where posters of new films and TV series are matched with the books they are based on. It highlights not only worthwhile fictional works but also give inspirations for programmes to watch.

December 2020 Back in December 2020, Team GIGGL participated in the Thames Hare and Hounds 68th Alumni Race, for the second year running, only this time due to the ongoing lockdown measures, the race was no longer held on the usual Wimbledon Common and like many other events, instead was hosted virtually.

This did not stop the spirit of OGs from all over the globe in competing from Vietnam, Australia and Tenerife. With 26 runners, compared to our 5 members in 2019 (making us the 3rd largest team in the race) amongst 373 runners across 30 Schools, their combined efforts put us high on the leaderboard in only our 2nd year of competing.

We cannot thank the team enough for showing up and giving all their effort; showing the true spirit of OGs behind Team GIGGL.

“DEATH IN THE STARS” A KATE SHACKLETON MYSTERY

BY FRANCES BRODY Yorkshire, 1927. Eclipse fever grips the nation, and when beloved theatre star Selina Fellini approaches trusted sleuth Kate Shackleton to accompany her to a viewing party on the grounds of Giggleswick School Chapel, Kate suspects an ulterior motive.

During the eclipse, Selina's friend and co-star Billy Moffatt disappears and is later found dead in the chapel grounds. Kate can't help but dig deeper and soon learns that two other members of the theatre troupe died in similarly mysterious circumstances in the past year.

Nicholas William Jefferies (C, 70)

When Anthony Briggs first stepped upon Giggleswick soil in September 1955, he could hardly have believed that he was signing up to a lifetime of service to the school. Firstly, as a pupil at Catteral until 1960, and then when he moved up to Big School in Nowell House. When his Giggleswick education ended in 1964, he was a House Senior, a member of the CCF Band, the Tennis Team, the M.R.U, and the School Choir.

OG Club President 2002 & Committee Member 2001 - 2021 I first “met” Nick (“Mr Indestructible”) Jefferies in September 1966. I was a pyjama-clad third form arrival from Catteral Hall and was lined up brushing my few remaining milk teeth, facing a rather grim whitewashed wall. Tradition had it that fourth formers would gleefully administer on the backsides of unsuspecting third formers painful flicks of wet, rolled up towels on their first night at Gigg. When my turn came, I turned and thumped an unsuspecting NWJ. It was the first (and last) time I have decked someone!

That year he joined a firm of solicitors in Burnley, rising to partner, he remained there for 49 years.

Anthony’s involvement with the school, as a parent and OG, began almost simultaneously with his son Martin joining Catteral Hall in 1983, when Anthony was instrumental in the forming of the Catteral Association. In 1985, Anthony was invited by Bill Oddie (St, 60) to join the OG Club Committee at a time when those great Giggleswick stalwarts, LP Dutton (Dutt), W Middleton (Billy Mid) and D E W Morgan (Spiv) ran the club. Anthony recalls he did this with some dread as L P Dutton was Secretary, and most decisions had already been made!!!

Needless to say, Nick Jefferies and I have become great friends since that September evening 55 years ago.

Nick is part of a unique racing family; father Allan rode in the IoM TT 1947-1949; his brother, Tony (OG) raced on the Island from 1968-1973, wining the TT on 3 occasions. Nick’s nephew, David, won the TT on 9 occasions. Nick however has his own claims to fame, winning the Manx IoM Two Day Trial (1976); the Senior Manx Grand Prix (1983) and the Formula One TT (1993). Having ridden a variety of bikes, he has also had the privilege of sitting astride ‘works’ machinery of Loctite Yamaha, Silkolene Honda, Castrol Honda and Honda Britain. He finally hung up his professional racing leathers in 2017, aged 65, but continues to take part in motorcycle trial events throughout the UK. Alongside his beloved bikes is his huge affection for Gigg. He is immensely proud that both his daughters, Becky (94-00) and Charlotte (94-01), attended Gigg. Becky was married in the Chapel.

One of Nick’s proudest moments (apart from his promotion to Drum Major in the CCF and being the guest speaker at Catteral Hall’s speech day in 1997) was being asked by Geoffrey Boult to give a eulogy in the Chapel on the life of Graham Watson, member of the Board of Governors for 51 years, a good friend of Nick’s and besotted with bikes. Consistent with Nick’s daring sense of adventure, he gave his eulogy in leathers from the pulpit with an exact replica of Graham Watson’s favourite Honda on a bike stand in front of the altar.

Nick of course loved his sport at Gigg. Colours in rugby, cricket, and fives spring to mind.

Nick possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of the contents of every Red Book issued between ‘66 -‘70 (and many more). If asked about an OG between these years, he will recite the pupil’s initials, the House, the years at school, in what sport he excelled and most probably, the names of the boy’s sisters!

He was elected President of the OG Club in 2002, having joined the Committee in the previous year.

Moving on 20 years and approaching an extremely energetic and youthful 70, after invaluable service on the OG Club Committee, Nick decided to throw in that towel(!) and make way for younger OGs. He continues to organise the OG Golfing Society’s Scottish Tour (a must for any OG golfer) and other popular OG golfing events.

Having recently offered Mark and Ruth Turnbull the joys of riding a Honda CBR 650 and a CBR 125 respectively, I suspect the new head, Sam Hart, will receive the same offer early in the New Year!

Gigg owes Nick a huge debt of gratitude for his unwavering, energetic, youthful, and no-nonsense approach over many years. We salute you Nick and wish you well in your “retirement”.

Chris Harwood (C, 71)

Anthony oversaw the change of control to more OGs becoming involved in running the club and throughout his unbroken period of service to the OG Club of some 36 years, Anthony was Chairman from 1995 to 1999, Secretary from 1999 to 2017 and President 2017/18. In his time as Secretary, there was rarely a meeting when Anthony’s wise counsel was not sought, with only the greater good of Giggleswick in mind. Such service to the school has rarely been equalled, but in addition, Anthony with wife Elizabeth at his side has been a regular attendee at all Gigg functions, especially in The Richard Whiteley Theatre, or in the School Chapel, where he has been a generous donor.

integrated way, embracing modern communications and media so that his passionate concern for the pupils of the school he loves is fulfilled best.

Anthony’s charitable commitments have spread far wider than Giggleswick over the years, first joining the Round Table in 1970, where he has been Secretary, Table Chairman and Area Chairman in 1986. He is still committed to Padiham Rotary Club, where he has been Secretary, President and is the current Treasurer, a position he has held for many years. He started the Santa Sleigh with the Club many years ago and is still involved with the planning. Anthony and his wife Elizabeth are very involved with their local Baptist church community, where Anthony is the Treasurer and Elizabeth has been a Christian Councillor for 26 years.

If life was not busy enough, Anthony, together with OG, Paul Wright (C, 72) formed a new Charity in 2019 to help a school in Kampala, Uganda which Paul Wright had been involved with for over 15 years. Anthony, Elizabeth and Paul have visited the school a number of times and hope to return in 2022. The Erasmus Uganda Charitable Trust has already assisted the school in building new dormitories, a new kitchen and helped with a number of smaller projects.

It is difficult to imagine Gigg functions without the calming influence of J.A.L. Briggs, but I have no doubt that his familiar jovial smile will not be lost to us, particularly at school plays and chapel recitals.

On behalf of the O.G. Committee, and indeed everyone at Giggleswick, “thank you” Anthony for everything that you have done for the O.G. Club and the school. You are a very hard act to follow.

Nick Jefferies (C, 70) and Bob Barker (S, 63)

One of Anthony’s key influences on the OG Committee was taking on everything to do with the London Dinner from his great friend Richard Whiteley. A task which required six months of planning and preparation! Nobody was more enthusiastic about the dinner than Anthony and this showed through in his obvious enjoyment in conducting and controlling the dinner, normally at the House of Commons. During this time Anthony was fortunate enough to be able to organise guided tours around the Houses of Parliament and on one occasion around the Tower of London.

Most recently he has been instrumental in beginning a process of modernisation where the OG Club and the school along with the Parents Association have formed the Community of Giggleswick School; COGS which aims to support the school in an

Anthony Simpson Deputy Head 2002 - 2021 Tony first arrived at Giggleswick in September 2002 as a Maths teacher who quickly became a head of the subject, as well as filling other roles such as resident tutor in Shute.

Embodying the ambition for learning that he instils in all his students, after eight years he went on to be Assistant Principal of North Liverpool Academy and Vice Principal of University Academy Keighley.

Such was his reputation as an excellent teacher, it was no surprise that many voiced their support for Tony’s return when the school was looking for a new Deputy Head Pastoral in 2017. Eschewing the maxim to never return to your past, Tony stood out in his candidacy, for it was clear that he possessed no less passion for the Giggleswick way than his much-respected predecessor.

Tony was to bring the efficiency and accountability of the maintained sector, but to this he added a huge dose of personal care for colleagues and pupils alike and invested time in others that has seen pupils and staff grow in confidence in their abilities.

He brought the highest standards of teaching, innovative organisation in the way the school was run, a reassuring eye for detail and the warmth of friendship to so many staff.

Such is the role of the Deputy Head that Tony would regularly be required to investigate a tale of wrongdoing. No matter what was uncovered, and whatever web of accounts he had to untangle, he would never lose his patience, always understanding that ultimately schools are here to educate, and

whatever a miscreant had got up to, the important point was to learn how their actions impacted upon others.

There is a very competitive side to Tony, yet in the best possible way: the sort that drives him on to greater ambition, to a First class degree and then a Masters in Maths, to represent GB in triathlon, and always to ensure his pupils receive the very best teaching that they can. It is no surprise, therefore, that his personal drive has now lead him to be Head at Stewarts Melville in Edinburgh.

Somehow we doubt this will be his final stop for he is destined for many great offices, and he went with the resounding applause and gratitude of the whole school. A talented teacher showing that sometimes the best classroom practitioners also make the best leaders.

Deaths BIBBY, ANDREW MARK (S, 87) 16/4/1968 – 05/12/2020 BROWN, KEITH (S, 51) 25/04/1933 – 09/07/2021 Keith won a county scholarship in 1944 and chose to go to Giggleswick, where he enjoyed playing rugby (a lifelong interest) and won his school boxing colours. He also played the violin in the school orchestra and as a soloist and sang in the school choir. A member of the Cadet Corps, he was Drum Major in his last year. He left in 1951 after getting his A levels, and joined the Royal Artillery for his National Service, getting his Commission in 1952, presented to him by H M the Queen in one of her first acts as monarch. He was discharged to the Territorial Army in 1953, where he served until 1966, earning the Territorial Decoration.

From 1953 he worked in his father’s business, Lanry Products in Nelson, becoming Managing Director in 1960. In 1969 he started his own business, Moornate Chemists Ltd, which he ran very successfully until his retirement in 1990.

BURY, CHARLES WILLIAM MICHAEL (P, 48) 03/03/1930 – 02/07/2021 Michael was Head of School and CCF Colour Sergeant Major. He attended Giggleswick from 1943-48.

BUTTERFIELD, TERENCE MICHAEL (P, 58) 01/05/1939 – 31/10/2020 CLARKE, DAVID NADIN (P, 56) 20/07/1937 – 08/03/2021 David Clarke died suddenly at home aged 83 years. He is survived by his two sons Michael and Nicholas. After leaving Giggleswick he first did his National Service with the Royal Engineers on Christmas Island.

Following that he went on to Christ’s College, Cambridge to read Engineering.

For the next 20 years he worked in the steel industry, chiefly in Sheffield. There he rose to Managing Director of Forgemasters. The later part of his career was spent consulting in many different areas of Eastern Europe, advising on running their industries post-communism.

His deep knowledge of the world steel industry won him great respect.

DAVIS, IAN BURTON (S, 53) 26/08/1936 – 31/07/2021 DELVES, JOHN FREDERICK (C, 50) 24/05/1933 – 19/12/2019 On leaving Giggleswick, John served in the Army doing National Service. He was stationed in West Germany in. B.A.O.R 12 and in Japan, stationed in Kure, which was the European Headquarters for the Army fighting the Korean war. John was promoted to the rank of Corporal and was attached in this capacity, to The Religious Padre within the troops who were stationed at Kure. John qualified for a Korean Campaign Medal.

A career in textiles and weaving followed leaving the Army. After working for several textile companies, John became self-employed in 1970, working in various retail enterprises until retiring at the turn of the century.

HAGGAS, WILLIAM MARTIN (N, 62) 07/07/1945 – 15/7/2021 Bill Haggas was born in Lytham St Annes and attended Giggleswick between 1958 and 1962. Upon his own admission, these were not his finest years!

After attending College in Bradford, Bill secured a position at M.G cars, which proved to be four happy and fruitful years. Then his father persuaded Bill to join the family business of Mercer and Son in Blackburn, specialising in ironmongery and steel stockholding.

There he remained, building up a very successful business until 2016 when he sold the company, to enjoy retirement in Bude, Cornwall.

However, Bill’s real contribution to Giggleswick was to the O.G. Golf Society.

Without Bill there would be no Giggleswick presence at the Birkdale Bucket, an immensely popular public schools golf event. In fact, Bill was in the winning team in 2019 after almost thirty years of unbroken attendance. It was one of Bill’s proudest moments. He also organised the Scottish Golf Tour for 28 years. Bill’s inveterate leadership was instrumental in building the Tour into the successful event that it is today.

Bill passed away shortly after his 76th birthday, following a brief illness. He had a warm heart, an infectious smile, and an innate ability to succeed. He will be very much missed by all who knew him.

Our sympathies go to his wife Catie, and his daughters, Victoria (OG), and Rebecca.

Nick Jefferies (C, 70) HOGG, ANTHONY (T, 42) 03/08/1924 – 29/03/2021 LOCHEN, CHRISTOPHER ROY 03/03/1924 – 29/11/2021 MARSDEN, KENNETH (P, 51) 27/01/1935 – 12/8/2021 Kenneth joined Martins Bank in Bentham in 1950 and went on to have a 42-year career in banking with Martins Bank and then Barclays Bank (which acquired Martins Bank). His career took him around the country until finally moving back to Castleford, Yorkshire where he worked as Branch Manager until his retirement in 1992.

Kenneth was a keen gardener, birdwatcher, enjoyed watching his sons play cricket and carried out charity work for Save the Children Fund for over two decades - including meeting the charity's President, the Princess Royal, on three occasions. Kenneth and his wife Brenda, were fortunate enough to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary shortly before he died.

PICK, RICHARD EARL (N, 52) 23/02/1933 – NOT KNOWN RINGROSE, BRIAN SEFTON (S, 49) 18/04/1931 – 30/10/2020 Brian attended Giggleswick during and after the war years. He loved the hills and moors of Yorkshire and often recounted the tales of the 26-mile Three Peaks.

He left Giggleswick in 1949 with an exhibition to Clare

College, Cambridge, first completing his National Service with the Royal Artillery. Brian kept in touch with Housemaster “Ikey” Dutton right up to his retirement and was also greatly influenced by Headmaster Mr E J Partridge, who partly stimulated Brian’s decision to become an Anglican Vicar. He was ordained at St Ebb’s church in Oxford and then went to work as a missionary in India.

He married his beloved Margaret Jean Evans in 1959, having met her on an IVF Beach Mission in Abersoch, and they went on to raise their family of four children in India, only returning to the UK in 1975. Following a short stint as a vicar in Oxford, Brian then became director of Interserve Scotland, supporting the work of this international Christian service mission throughout Asia and the Middle East.

ROTHERA, BRIAN OUGHTON (S, 48) 27/04/1930 – 22/11/2007 Brian was born in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, the first son of Edna Barke and Ralph Oughton Rothera.

Brian attended Ascham House Prep School in Gosforth.

At thirteen Brian became a boarder at Giggleswick School.

Brian was a Chief Engineer in the Merchant Navy, travelling to several countries. He married three times.

He lived with his first wife Marcelle, in Northumberland, with whom he had two children, Peter and Anne-Marie.

He had five grandchildren – Leon, Sam, Lisa, Thomas, and Lucy.

Brian lived in Germany and America with his second wife, Magdalena. Later in life he worked in America in Real Estate and lived in California and Montana with his third wife, Anita, where he died aged 77 in 2007.

Brian’s family would be interested to hear from anyone who remembers him.

TETLOW, ANTHONY CHARLES (M, 67) 07/08/1949 – 09/07/2021 Charles arrived at Giggleswick in the Spring term 1963.

He was a member of Paley House and a lively pupil, joining the CCF Band and excelling in boxing. Warwick Brookes was Housemaster at the time and Mr P Wickstead was House Tutor. It was the era of Radio Caroline, Stidgers, Swoggers, Blue Papers, Punishment Schools, High Rigg (30mins), Triangle (15mins), Long Cross Streets and of course The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Charles joined Allied Dunbar as a financial advisor in the 1980s and he and Janet lived in Bromley, Kent. He served for a time as a Territorial soldier in The Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) whilst working in the city. The HAC is the 2nd oldest Military Corps in the world and recruits almost exclusively from within the City of London financial services sector. He was a regular attendee at the OG London Dinners and OG

Day, which he would attend with his wife and his mother.

Charles was initiated into the Old Giggleswickian Lodge No 8263 on 12th May 1998 and he became Worshipful Master in 2007. He was instrumental in proposing Chris Bean (59-63), Jim Nicol (62-65) and Andrew McNaughton (63-66) into the Lodge.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Andrew McNaughton (P, 66) and Jim Nicol (P, 65) WALSH, NORMAN JOHN (S, 79) 1960 – 06/10/2020 Norman worked for many years in the family textile business at Witton Mill in Blackburn. He then started his own businesses in renewable energy making peoples’ homes warmer with insulation and heating systems. More recently, Norman set up business in the Orkney Islands where he built a new home for the family to visit.

Norman enjoyed reading, fishing, and travelling the world. He loved nothing more than spending time with all his family, especially his two young grandsons. He was a kind, cheerful, generous, and charismatic person whose ambition, imagination and optimism knew no bounds.

Norman will be hugely missed but fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him.

Norman died suddenly at his home, age 59.

WELCH, RICHARD (C, 69) 19/02/1953 – 24/01/2021 WESTCOTT, SIMON MURRAY (St, 66) 23/08/1949 – 29/09/2020 WILSON, ALAN (P, 53) 02/07/1935 – 02/09/2021 In 1953, Alan joined the RAF, initially completing his National Service before then signing up for more.

Alan’s ability to understand Russian made him a valuable team member as a translator at a time when the ‘Cold War’ threatened to wreak havoc on the world.

In 1970, Alan joined world renown Croda Hydrocarbons. He spent 8 years with Croda before joining Celcon Ltd in 1979 and worked there through to his retirement in 1992.

Later in life, Alan’s life revolved around his love of golf, and he was President of the OG Golf Society from 2010-2013.

He was Club Captain at Selby in 1970, President of the East Riding of Yorkshire Golf Alliance in 1972, President of the Leeds and District Union of Golf Clubs in 1978 and Captain of the Society of Leeds Golf Captains in 1986. Alan was subsequently invited to be President of the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs in 1989.

Alan’s experience and knowledge of golf administration resulted in him becoming one of three trustees for the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs, where he undertook this responsible position for 16 years.
