Gary Hartley Carr, 1980 Well, my year as President hasn’t gone exactly as I’d seen it so far! No OG Day in June, an improvised handover of the ‘gong’ from the immediate past President and sadly no dinners, drinks or gatherings since. Hopefully Covid 19 will allow some normality to return before too long.

Speaking with the Headmaster, OGs and OG Club Committee members over Zoom and MS Teams, I know the School is dealing with the current circumstances admirably and keeping the great wheels of Gigg turning.

Without a great deal therefore to highlight in terms of current activity on the ground, I’ll just mention that as a group the OG Club Committee are in active discussions over the best way to present OG events in the future, how best to engage with all leavers, from very recent to the distant past, naturally inclusion of and for

everyone is a priority with any advancements discussed remaining very mindful of this.

Suggestions including social media and more online releases and communication, less formal and more inclusive events, will no doubt become more the norm as change is embraced and not feared.

I am delighted to take the Election of President of the OG Club this year and God willing I will see many of you at the School and various functions once we are allowed to gather. I look forward to learning more of the School’s development since I left 40 years ago, and indeed the plans and ambitions for the future.

Headmaster’s Welcome: Everything changes t is unprecedented to be writing a message for Old Giggleswickians after a summer when no trips have taken place. Indeed, one might expect that a school where breadth of curriculum and opportunity is so fundamental to its educational experience and learning would be struggling to deliver.

I

Well not a bit of it. In typical Giggleswick fashion, the Covid crisis has brought with it a wave of creativity and enterprise that has ensured that over the past six months we have continued to provide the very highest of standards in schooling. There is no doubt that we were fortunate to have already backed a programme that gave us the infrastructure to switch our learning so quickly into the digital world, and my gratitude again to all those alumni who have supported our Annual Fund in the past that has helped us become a leader in digital learning. We are now proudly a Microsoft showcase school, and the lockdown in March gave us all a further incentive to take our skills to another level to ensure that we not only delivered effective remote learning, but also the full range of pastoral support and activities that created a virtual school. From

transition degree courses to hang outs with professional sports people, from online choirs to yoga and sports sessions, we delivered it all. A vital lifeline for the whole community that meant we not only weathered the first lockdown together, but also no student’s learning fell behind.

While successful in many different ways, the GVS made us all value so much more what we had perhaps taken for granted about life in school. So it was with renewed enthusiasm that we all welcomed a return to the school’s beautiful campus this September. Although we are all working from within our bubbles, the life of the school thrives. Understandably, some international members of the Giggleswick community have delayed their return, but many have decided to come to what is in actual fact a far safer environment than many more urban areas. We have found ways to safely sing, play, compete and participate in all that normally takes place at Giggleswick.

Routines and timetables adapt, but the fundamentals stay the same.

So things may have changed but fundamentally Giggleswick remains the same, true to its values, and now, thanks to the ability to move online, even more resilient as we face the uncertainties of the months ahead.

I am confident that, however we adapt to the challenges in these months, we will be able to welcome you all back to this wonderful place in the years ahead.

Life in Lockdown Stories from around the world...

London, UK

The Covid Frontline I am a Haematology Specialist Registrar (doctor in specialty training). The start of the COVID-19 outbreak was full of uncertainty for me. I was working in the Haematology Research department of the Cancer Institute at University College London and was seconded back to the medical team on a dedicated Haematology COVID ward at University College London Hospital, set up to protect the rest of our vulnerable patients.

We worked 12-hour shifts and were initially provided with surgical masks and scrubs. We were soon also advised to wear face shields, we started off by sharing! Never before have I cared for patients with a disease we knew very little about. It was frightening witnessing the rapid deterioration in our patients and the sense of helplessness felt by patients and their loved ones. There was a sense of pride with everyone within UCLH working so seamlessly together.

Back to Normal In Mauritius the entire COVID-19 issue was extremely well handled by the Government.

Lockdown was severe, and to date we have seen less than 10 deaths. Being an island, the airport was strictly controlled, and is currently opening up in phases. The hospitality industry has put massive pressure on the Prime Minister to free up tourism, as huge amounts of revenue are being lost. Then just last week, the Government announced that compulsory entry quarantine to the country will be introduced, for 2 weeks, and must be personally paid for. The cost of this is 40 - 50,000 Rupees, which is equivalent to about ÂŁ1,000. This has angered all parties involved and is felt to be a disastrous decision and will deter most tourists from coming to Mauritius.

Otherwise, I am pleased to say that everything else is currently back to normal!

The next area of need was working on the Oxford Vaccine Trial team, recruiting hospital staff and the general public to the phase III trial which randomised the ChAdOx1 nCOV-19 vaccine against the Men ACWY control. Our team was made up of a number of trial nurses, doctors and administrators who had never worked together before, but our UCLH trial site was set up with immense speed as we recruited to a trial for a much needed COVID-19 vaccine. By July, it was time to return to some semblance of my usual routine. Throughout this unnerving time, I have reflected on how amazingly resilient and adaptable we all can be in this time of need.

Vietnam

Pretty Much Unscathed

Vietnam has handled the pandemic incredibly well; quietly going about their business and with strict measures in place from the start, the country has somehow got through pretty much unscathed. Not much in the mainstream media, but you may have caught the ‘Wash Your Hands’ song which made its way around the world.

Having a border with China helped – a head start; Vietnam closed its borders quickly to people travelling from hotspots and by the beginning of March, Vietnam was closed to the world. Vietnamese people I’d say have been more ‘scared’ of the virus which has meant they have followed the advice to the T. To give examples of how the government responded: -

Whole apartment towers were ‘locked down’ if there was an infection or potential infection recorded.

Individuals were picked up and taken off to quarantine camps if they were an ‘F1 or F2’ – that being where you sat in the chain of people linked to the initial infection (F0).

As my Vietnamese is still about the level of a one year old, I was relying on hearsay and rumours for a while. The community realised the problem and before long a Facebook group ‘COVID-19 Update Information for Foreigners in Vietnam’ was born – a god send!

To be honest I have had it rather good in Ho Chi Minh City compared to a lot of the world and now life has been pretty much as usual for the last 4-5 months.

However, this whole situation has given everyone time to think and for some reason I was taken back to my first term at Catteral Hall in 2002 when I was yet to be a lucky owner of a mobile phone.

I had to scratch off the back of a phone credit card; plug the calling code into the pay phone; plug out my parents’ Singapore phone number; let it ring three times. Hang up. Wait for them to call me back. How technology has changed!

Whilst things are different at the moment and not the easiest, I’m incredibly grateful for the world we live in, WhatsApp, Zoom, Skype – I can almost be on the other side of the world at the touch of a button, and more importantly get daily updates on the home grown vegetables!

Bentham Golf Course Getting Jobs Done

The initial lockdown came as a shock to the Club, however it gave us a chance to reassess the golf course as we welcomed a new Head Green Keeper and assistant to the course. Unable to furlough any of our green keeping staff as they had all started after the cut-off date, we spent the time embedding the cuts across the course and completing jobs that would normally have to wait until winter.

Once golf was open again, we were the busiest we had ever been. We were one of the only courses open to visitors and we had golfers from all over the North travelling just to get a game.

Golf enjoyed a busy summer until the pubs reopened!

Going into the winter we are focusing on building a new short game practice area and are in the process of moving and redesigning our pro shop.

James Burns’ New York, New York It was March 12th, I had just returned to the office having picked up lunch at the deli on the corner of Rector and Washington Street, not far from the World Trade Center. As I unwrapped the wax paper to reveal a pastrami on rye sandwich, I lost all sense of the conversation going on in the office. All that occupied my head, was utter focus on the task at hand.

A colleague spoke my name and repeated her question to me. This time with a little more force.

“James... when will you close the office?”

“Why are we closing the office?” I replied.

After a small pause, I looked up from my sandwich to see Valerie looking both surprised and concerned. She didn’t need to reply. It had dawned on me.

24 hours later I closed the office; it has remained so since. Our best estimate for reopening would be spring 2021. However, I have a strong feeling that office life will never be the same again.

COVID-19 and the resulting lockdown has brought pain and upset. I celebrated my 30th, attended a wedding, two house-warming parties and a stag do all on the wonderful, sometimes painfully awkward Zoom. Many more events and plans have been rescheduled or cancelled in their entirety. Bubbles on top pitch, watching the cricket and reminiscing with young and not so young OGs on OG Day truly is the highlight of my year. The inability to travel, I normally enjoy frequent trips home to London, the Midlands and Yorkshire. Yet on the other hand, there has been such glimmers of hope and happiness, that not surprisingly when I think about it, revolve around Community!

In the dark days of the lockdown, when New York was the epicenter of the American pandemic, I was pleased to discover I no

longer had to factor in time for my commute, I found myself with nearly two hours a day of extra time. As such I found myself cooking, as all my favourite restaurants were closed.

Actually enjoying breakfast rather than grabbing a bagel as I ran to the office and reading books rather than the just the NY Times headlines on my phone.

As we all started to live in this new world, I met my neighbours, like really met them. In the ten years I have lived in London, and New York, I have never known more than my neighbours’ names. I now find myself enjoying weekly socially-distanced drinks on my building’s roof top with my neighbour, that I am pleased to report I now know their names and some of their stories.

As spring turned to summer, and some of the restrictions eased I signed up for weekly ceramics lessons at a local studio 250 yards from my apartment. The owner and teacher is one of those true characters of life.

Exceptionally talented as a potter and an even better storyteller. The weekly classes have been good for the soul, mind and heart!

For me, lockdown has made me realise the importance of people, community and appreciating what’s on your doorstep. What’s remarkable about it, is that’s the same lesson that Giggleswick taught me, yet it seems I needed a little reminder.

For those of you that don’t know me, I left Giggleswick (Paley 2008) to study Art Foundation at Central St. Martins. In 2014 I moved to New York to set up the US division of an illustration and literary agency called The Bright Agency.

School News An interview with our new Director of Sport and OG Ed Buck Ed returned to Giggleswick in 2018 having been a rugby scholar in the sixth form from 2009-2011. His move back North allowed him to take up a coaching role with Scottish Exiles designed to find the very best rugby players outside of Scotland.

“In my role as Director of Sport I will be bringing together sport in the Senior and Junior School, and I’m looking forward to providing more transition events throughout the school year groups so pupils will feel at ease when moving into a year group where they may be introduced to sports they haven’t tried before but also developing a progressive and appropriate programme.

Giggleswick’s presence in the community is something I value and will endeavour to promote further. Local club links include North Ribblesdale and Wharfedale Rugby Club, Ben Rhydding Hockey Club, Settle Cricket Club and Skipton Tennis Club. Our elite performers are supported outside School by the ESP programme and our professional club links.

The links and performance pathways are very important to our pupils and through the Elite

Sports Programme our links with professional clubs are ever growing. We already have strong links with Sale Sharks Rugby Club, Yorkshire Rugby Academy and Leeds Rhinos Netball, whilst hockey players are involved in England Hockey’s performance hubs across the North East and West. Our current Community Outreach Programme will also have a new look this year as we look to welcome more local primary schools to participate in a wide range of sports.

One of the many benefits of the Virtual School was our Giggleswick Sport ‘Extra-Time’ Hangout. We brought in high profile guest speakers via TEAMS, and have been able to continue this into the Christmas term with some brilliant speakers, including Olympians, international players and coaches.

What I love about teaching at Giggleswick is how all the pupils approach games with an ambition to prosper and participate across such a wide range of sports, so they become versatile, multi-sport high performers whilst they are here.”

From Medicine, Law, Languages, Music, Drama as well as History and Geography the courses, reflect the values of the school in nurturing talent of all kinds.

They have been rewarded and proved once more that you are not defined by your grades, but by the person you become.”

Martha Richmond achieved grade nine scores for all her eleven subjects, placing her among the best performing students in the country.

She said: “I am delighted with my results, and really pleased all the hard work has paid off!

The teachers did everything they could to help and encourage me to achieve my best. I am going on to study Biology, Chemistry and Maths at A level, in the hope to go into a biological profession in the future.”

Our Heads of School celebrated their success as Joshua Kirkhope-Arkley secured a place at Pembroke College, Oxford University to read French and Arabic, and Amy Chadwick is progressing to Bath University to study International Management.

GCSEs Our students celebrated some excellent grades that recognise the hard work that they and their teachers have put in over the past two years. Almost half the students achieved a grade 7 or above.

Other successes include Marisa Allen who achieved A*A*A*A in Maths, Physics, Spanish and Further Maths, and will now be heading to Edinburgh University to study Physics, and local pupil Chris Thornton who has secured a place at Bristol University to study Medicine.

Our dramatists were among the top performers with 75% achieving the higher grades 7-9. Sophie Huber, who played a lead role in last year’s production Lord of the Flies said “I am absolutely thrilled with my results. I have taken part in all the drama productions during my time at Giggleswick and I have thoroughly enjoyed them. They’ve also built my confidence and helped me to be ambitious.”

Darren Everhart, a name familiar to many an OG, has returned to Giggleswick to take up the position of Director of Music.

“I have so many wonderful memories of my time working at Giggleswick School, such as the School’s incredible Quincentenary celebrations of 2012. In the last eight years teaching in St George’s British International School in Rome, I was privileged to work with students from over 80 different nationalities. During this time, the School’s numerous choirs, orchestras and ensembles performed in some of the most prestigious venues in Rome, as well as undertaking music tours to a different European capital city every year. My personal highlight was playing the organ for Pope Francis during his visit to All Saints’ Church.

The forthcoming year will not be without its challenges for the Performing Arts as we have seen in the continued efforts of the wider Arts community to adapt and overcome these obstacles. In a similar way, I am sure the students at Giggleswick will rise to the challenges ahead, finding creative and imaginative ways to express themselves through Music, Dance, Drama and Art.

At Giggleswick, the Chapel Choir remains central to the musical, spiritual and cultural life of the School and I am impressed with the high standard of choral singing that has been maintained. Learning to play a musical instrument takes years of dedicated practice and having the opportunity to play alongside fellow

Music enriches all our lives and we have all been affected by the lack of communal music activities over the past months.

Gradually being able to come together as a school community once again will need great care and thoughtfulness, as well as considerable support from parents and colleagues. Knowing the powerful impact that music has on us all and the way it enriches the lives of our students will be the driving force in re-energising the musical life of the School."

Hardship Fund

he Giggleswick Hardship Fund has raised over £33,000 in just four months and will be open for donations until at least the end of 2020. The reality of the economic downturn triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic is that it threatens the continuity of education for some pupils at Giggleswick. After the disruption of lockdown, it is a matter of priority for the School that no child has their education interrupted further in the event that a family encounters financial difficulties during the 2020-21 academic year. The Hardship Fund is a crucial safety net, which has already come to the assistance of three students this term.

Why does it matter? The OG Club knows why, and has donated £13,000 to the Fund. As we face the full scale of the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, here is one story from an OG who knows exactly how it feels to have to leave School when his school fees suddenly could not be paid.

“I left Giggleswick School 5th form aged just 16, 45 years ago. Sometimes you see my name with a leaver year group of 1975, and sometimes with 1977.

My year group went forward for two years without me. In July 1975 I went home not knowing that I wasn’t coming back to Giggleswick School 6th Form.

I left behind all my friends.

I first became aware that my school fees would not be paid, in mid-August of that year. I didn’t return to any school from that moment.

I worked as a labourer in an industrial laundry to scrape together the enrolment fees to attend night school, at Tameside Tech. 4 x 2 hour lessons, over 3 weekday evenings, including 1 evening with two x 2 hour lessons 4:45pm to 6:45pm, then canteen, then 7:00pm to 9pm. The laundry allowed me to leave early on the double lessons evening each week so I lost an hour’s pay.

I never had a chance to study for A levels or to get to University. I just batted on through an ONC at an HNC in business, which I ultimately finished at Tottenham Tech College in London, before entering the banking and commerce world.

That’s hardship, disruptive hardship.

I know it when I see it, elsewhere and I feel the pain of those pupils who are experiencing fear and uncertainty right now, which could close doors for them as it did for me, a generation ago.

Hardship includes leaving behind your support group - your trusted friends who know you and who you can rely on. At 15 or 16 years old, replacing these with new acquaintances takes time, and distracts focus for young adults.

I wish that a Hardship Find had existed in 1975, but it didn’t. Now is the moment. It will be life-changing for some Giggleswick pupils.”

GIGG:NEWS Development

Changing Lives Annual Fund Giggleswick School has been running an Annual Fund appeal for the last nine years during which time over £350,000 has been raised. Despite lockdown putting a stop to much of our planned fundraising activity, including the Easter 2020 Gigg Global Give, £27,022 was donated in 2019/20 up on £18,000 raised in the previous year.

In addition to supporting new pupils with bursaries, 2020 Annual Fund donations have paid for new radios for the CCF, an organic garden at Style House, interactive mobile technology for the children at Mill House, our Young Enterprise Scheme subscription, and a first stage landscaping study for The Flat.

Work on landscaping designs for The Flat is ongoing and although we don’t yet know when the scheme can be implemented, we are now finding that this space is increasingly valued. Consequently, we have designated The Flat as a traffic-free zone on a permanent basis and reserved it for use by the staff and pupils for outdoor teaching, music rehearsals, recreation and CCF activities.

Thank you to everyone who has so generously supported this year. Students are already benefitting greatly from your generosity. We have now closed the 2020 Appeal and in 2020/21 will be concentrating on the Bursary and the Hardship Funds.

Bursary Fund Giggleswick School’s history is one steeped in philanthropy. The mission of Giggleswick Foundation remains as true today as it did for Chantry Priest James Carr 500 years ago – to raise funds to support and provide the widest possible access to a Giggleswick education.

Donations from Old Giggleswickians, parents, staff and friends of the School have helped to provide bursaries for pupils throughout our history and continue to enable us to provide life-changing experiences for them.

The School currently provides more than 40 pupils with means-tested bursarial assistance and we work with a number of trusts and charities to support children from a variety of backgrounds.

However, demand is growing and we need help to support as many children as we can.

Bush Fire Rescue Every year for the last 28 years, my family have camped at the Eastern Victorian town of Mallacoota, in the Australian bush, a place which is now known all over the world by bush fires.

On New Years Eve, as the fires approached, we were given one hour to leave the camp site and find a safe place as the town was under threat from embers and the fire. Luckily, we have a four-wheel drive vehicle which enabled us to get onto a sand bar approximately 800 meters from any bush. We sought sanctuary on the beach for 22 hours through the ember attack and fire storm and witnessed seeing Eucalyptus trees literally explode in front of us.

When we were able to return to the camp site

we saw over forty homes that had been burnt to the ground; the town had been saved by a very lucky change in wind direction which had taken the fire round the town but another hundred homes were lost.

The town was now completely cut off with the only road completely impassable due to burnt trees on the road and others just waiting to fall.

The Government decided we shoud be evacuated and the RAN were called in with their large landing craft vessel HMAS Choules.

The first evacuation involved 1,100 souls and a 20-hour trip back to Melbourne.

We had to leave our vehicle and caravan behind whilst 250 kms of trees were cleared from the roads. We didn’t retrieve our vehicle and van until 13th February.

Heidi Thomas (C, 09): Nomination for Legal Tech Award Heidi, (C, 09) has recently been nominated for her first professional award. in the category of Professional Services in the Women of Legal Tech Awards.

Heidi, a Legal Technology Manager at DLA Piper was nominated for her contribution to Legal Tech, including leading the firm’s fastevolving international electronic signature solution in response to the unique challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis.

Heidi commented “I did an AS Level in IT at Gigg which is where my love of tech began (taught by Mrs Wood and the late great Mr Andrew). Following a law degree at University of York and a 4-year career practicing as a corporate solicitor at the DLA Leeds Office, I decided to step into Legal Technology full time”.

Christopher Roy Lochen (S, 41): Awarded the Légion d’Honneur In 1937, at the age of 13, Roy became a boarder at Giggleswick, joining his older brother (James) Dennis. Roy recalls the headmaster, Mr Partridge as a huge man, who was very strict and taught Latin. His contemporaries were Mike Allen (S, 40) and Michael Williams (S, 40). Roy particularly enjoyed playing rugby (wing three quarters) and cricket and the special trips to Betty's Tearooms in Harrogate when his parents visited from Newcastle.

Roy left in 1941 and at the age of 17, was conscripted to the army; after a spell at Bovington Camp, he was trained at Sandhurst and subsequently joined the elite Inns of Court Regiment and the Royal Tank Regiment (which later changed its name to the 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry).

Initially a Second Lieutenant in charge of a troop of Sherman tanks, he served in France, Belgium and Holland; he was promoted Captain at the end of the war while based in a supervisory capacity in Belgium and in occupied Germany.

After leaving the army in 1946, he moved to London and in 1948 started work at shipbrokers H. Clarkson, at 52 Bishopsgate. He was sent to Norway for 18 months as an apprentice where he met Else (to whom he has now been married for almost 70 years).

In June 2016, Roy was awarded the Légion d'Honneur for his acknowledged military engagement and steadfast involvement in the Liberation of France during the Second World War. Thank you to Mr Lochen’s daughters Kim Lochen & Nina Baynham for this article

Plague Pandemics I am currently in the third year of my PhD at the University of Nottingham where I am split between the Geography department and the Biodiscovery Institute.

My work is focused on plague pandemics caused by the Yersina pestis bacteria, the most famous of which is the Black Death of the 14th Century. I am exploring two different avenues in my research; 1) ecological elements of the plague, such as how host species (not just rats, pretty much anything furry) contribute to plague’s distribution and how climatic changes may contribute to past and future pandemics, 2) Investigating Y. pestis survival in soil environments in an attempt to identify and understand a previously understudied and relatively unknown element of plague’s infection cycle. This work has been incredibly interesting and rewarding, however until recently has seemed relatively abstracted from reality and focused in the past.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed this significantly and brought discussions of disease to the front of everyone’s mind.

My work has only been slightly impacted with laboratory closures halting my experiments early. A small silver lining to the current situation is the increased access to international research seminars as everyone has moved to using Teams, Zoom etc. During lockdown I attended a plague history seminar series led by academics in Princeton University and ran a short seminar with Darren Richmond for 6th form Giggleswick students.

HH David Stockdale QC Life in Law and roaming in retirement is Honour David Stockdale QC is a former Head of School and a former Governor and Chairman of Governors.

He practised as a barrister in Manchester for 35 years and sat as a full-time judge for a further 10 years, retiring in March 2020 as Senior Circuit Judge and Honorary Recorder of Manchester.

“As every OG knows, section 142 of the Criminal Justice Act 2003 sets out the purposes behind the sentencing of offenders.

That doesn’t stop judges from thinking more widely about the justification of punishment by the State. For my part, I would go back to debates hosted by Rev Philip Curtis in his book-lined study at Giggleswick. Getting into his stride, Mr Curtis would hold forth on theories of Utilitarianism and Retributivism and remind us that the father of Utilitarianism was not, as commonly thought, Jeremy Bentham or John Stuart Mill but William Paley, theologian and Old Giggleswickian, whose family name is forever linked to the School.

These were some of the threads that connected Giggleswick to my own thoughts as I contemplated the sentencing of miscreants at Manchester Crown Court.

It was pure chance that, when I entered the Classical 6th, I happened to be taught by the greatest of heavyweights: P Curtis, LP Dutton and OJT Rowe, respectively Chaplain, Second Master and Headmaster. To have been tutored by these giants was a privilege for which I am still grateful. They set me on a path.

After Classics at Oxford, I switched to law and took the Bar exams in London but had always wanted to return north and live within striking distance of the Dales. Life at the Bar on the Northern Circuit was always busy. At

times it was demanding, as all the best jobs are, but it was rewarding and fun.

I would recommend it to any Giggleswickian with a talent for argument and a capacity for hard work.

I was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1995 and for the next 15 years did catastrophic injury cases. This was complex, sometimes soulsearching work in which the stakes could be high, involving claims by people with paralysis from spinal or brain injury. The final change came when I moved onto the Bench, returning to the criminal work on which I had cut my teeth as a young barrister. I enjoyed the new environment and in 2013 was appointed Honorary Recorder of Manchester, which meant trying the heavier cases of murder, manslaughter and terrorism and sitting occasionally in the Court of Appeal Criminal Division in London. The Recorder’s job carries administrative responsibilities. It also includes acting as a link between the judiciary and the Town Hall and performing some civic duties, including processing in robes at public events such as Remembrance Day and attending at the Cathedral and in the University. It is a fascinating role, which has taken me to areas of activity in the city, particularly in the voluntary sector, which I would otherwise never have seen. I have enjoyed every minute of it.

Retirement during lockdown has been limiting but I have recently taken trips north to the Orkneys and south to the Pyrenees, the latter on my Triumph Rocket. I have also just completed The Three Peaks on foot in torrential rain. That is rather more exhilarating than the Criminal Justice Act 2003. And, far more importantly, it brings me back to Yorkshire.”

Dr Peter Tate MBE A little bit in love with Giggleswick ike many of us, Peter Tate remains “a little bit in love with Giggleswick” even after 60 years and after attending Gigg at a more austere time, when discipline, food and exercise were not memorable for being enjoyable. In 1968, still only 21 and as he says, “very wet behind the ears”, Newcastle University saw fit to give Peter Tate a degree in Medicine and so a long and fascinating career in Medicine began.

A Grammar School scholarship boy, Peter left Giggleswick aged 17. Having shared a study in Nowell with Anthony Daniels (C3PO of Star Wars Fame), his greatest influences at Gigg were the legendary Russell Harty; “always so filled with wild almost manic enthusiasm”, and Peter’s housemaster in Nowell, the similarly legendary Bill Middleton. Mr Middleton, it seems had in Peter’s words had to put up with a lot, as “I was not an easy pupil and I shudder at what a ghastly unpredictable little prig I must have been!” He started at Newcastle University on his 17th birthday alongside fellow Nowellite, the late Dennis Parker (N, 63). He qualified as a Doctor in 1968.

After spells as a P&O Surgeon and as a trainee Doctor in Kentish Town, Peter found himself working as a family doctor in Abingdon on Thames. This continued for the next 30 years. His career-long interest in Doctor Patient communications was initiated in 1976 by the acquisition of his own first Cardiac Pacemaker! Inspired to try to improve communication between patients and health care providers

he became involved with the Royal College of General Practitioners, becoming one of their examiners from 1981. Still struggling to improve these all important Doctor Patient Communications he led the introduction of the Video module in 1996.

Retiring as MRCGP Chief Examiner in March 2006, Peter was awarded the MBE for services to general medical practice in 2008.

At Andrew Bax's request (founder of Radcliffe Medical press), he wrote his first edition of The Doctor’s Communication Handbook in 1993. In August 2019, the 8th edition was published, with young Cambridge GP Dr Francesca Frame as joint author. Other writings include The Other Side of Medicine, a collection of essays and short stories published in 2006, Seasickness, a novel based on his experiences as a young ship’s surgeon, The Seanachai an Irish Ghost Story and The Curatage (think Vicarage) Ghost, a story for grandchildren based on the house where he grew up in CorfeCastle. All of these are available through Amazon. In 1983 he was a co-author of The Consultation and then in 2003 The New Consultation, published by OUP with David Pendleton, Theo Schofield and Peter Havelock. He has lectured widely on communication issues.

Peter is at last retired in Poundbury, Dorchester, but still writing. His latest book Bedside Matters, was published in November 2020.

Patrick Swann

Outdoor Pursuits Shield In May 2020, the Development Office received a telephone call from OG Patrick Swann, (St, 43). Mr Swann informed the office that he was in the process of writing his life story for his family and he would like to check some facts. What followed, was a hugely interesting story for both the School and also our first OG Podcast... atrick came to Giggleswick at the age of 12. The family having recently moved to Leeds felt that the area was not safe for Patrick as WW2 was just breaking out and so Patrick was packed off to Giggleswick.

Knowing Patrick to be safe at School, left Patrick’s parents free to do their bit for the war. Patrick’s father, Len, a former WW1 pilot joined the Civil Defence Service and Patrick’s mother, Judy became a Queen’s Messenger.

Arriving into Catteral Hall in 1939, and despite being resentful of having been sent away, Patrick found the ladies in charge to be kind and welcoming and felt somewhat mothered.

However, a year later he moved up to ‘big school’ into Style House, under the watchful, stricter eye of ‘Ike’ Dutton.

Patrick recalls at least one occasion where he received 12 of the best for stepping out of line.

Patrick’s parents cleverly thought of ways to help their homesick boy settle into big school. Patrick recalls that to be in possession of ‘tuck’ at school was a great asset and so his mum would make copious supplies of parkin which they would bring on parents visiting days. Another way of gaining

popularity was to have a photograph of your girlfriend on your desk. Unfortunately, Patrick did not fit this criterion, but a family friend had 2 daughters and Patrick was encouraged to go out with the older, but sadly plainer of the two girls. Cunningly though, Patrick managed to obtain a photograph of both sisters and proudly passed off the prettier one of the two as his girlfriend to his school chums!

Patrick, being short-sighted, was not a fan of ball sports at School and he favoured the Officer Training Corps. Rather belatedly he learnt that by becoming a member of the OTC Drum and Bugle band, he could avoid team sports and so Patrick volunteered to play the only remaining unallocated instrument in the Band. The OTC Band performed regularly, and occasionally was sent to march through Settle to encourage the locals to purchase ‘War Bonds,’ or volunteer to join the Armed Services.

Patrick recalls however, that there is no official record of the effect that the enthusiastic ‘ding – ding – dinging’ of his instrument, the humble triangle, had on these endeavours!!

GIGG:NEWS OG Feature outside Style House for shelters in case of air raids and once being sent to stand guard over a German bomber which had crash-landed on the nearby Yorkshire Moor.

Len, Patrick’s father was an amateur, but accomplished, woodcarver. In another attempt to help Patrick settle into big school, Len carved a wooden shield, 18 inches tall by 9 ½ inches wide. The shield was an exact copy of the Giggleswick emblem, beautifully crafted, complete with Latin inscription around the edges. Initially, Patrick was nonplussed by this gift and worried what his peers would make of it. A few odd looks and remarks for sure, but some respect too. It certainly became a talking point, which was his father’s intended purpose.

The Shield remained in Patrick’s study until it was time to leave Gigg in 1943, when he took it back home to Leeds. Following an inspirational talk whilst at Giggleswick by a General from the Indian Army, Patrick enlisted into the Indian Army in the Parachute Regiment and he did not see the shield again until 1967 when Patrick’s parents suggested that Michael, Patrick’s son might like to be the new guardian of the shield. Michael, who was now a similar age to Patrick when he first encountered the shield, was in poor health and it was felt that with Michael’s love of collecting things, he would cherish the shield being added to his collection. Michael proudly displayed the shield in his bedroom until he sadly passed away in 1984.

In 1994, over 50 years since leaving Giggleswick, Patrick wrote to the Headmaster, Mr Anthony Millard to enquire if the School would be interested in receiving the shield to use as they saw fit. Patrick received a lovely reply from Mr Millard saying the School would be delighted to use the shield as a future prize for Speech Day and suggested the category of Outdoor Pursuits and so the Swann Shield Outdoor Pursuits prize was born. Mr Millard invited Patrick and his family to come to Giggleswick to hand over the shield and have a tour of the school and receive lunch at the Headmaster’s house. On the guest list for lunch, was Patrick’s former Housemaster, LP Dutton, whereupon Patrick took the opportunity to remind Mr Dutton that the School still owed him a silver spoon for his swimming success during the War, when Dutton had presented Patrick with an I.O.U instead of a spoon.

when he asked about the Shield and whether it was still being used as a Speech Day prize.

We suggested that he might like to have a socially-distanced visit from the then current President of the OG Club, Mark Ehlinger, as he lived close by. Patrick readily agreed and, Mark swiftly arranged to visit. Following a first meeting, Mark suggested a return visit to record a podcast to share Patrick’s wonderful stories with the OG and school community.

Patrick agreed, and in September, Mark dusted off his previous motor racing commentating skills and conducted a heart-warming interview. At this second visit, Mark settled the near 80-year old debt and presented Patrick with his much awaited Giggleswick spoon, owed to him for his swimming success by Mr Dutton.

Patrick proudly states that his Giggleswick education and his time in the Army made him the man he is today.

The Development Office would like to thank Mr Swann and Mr Ehlinger for their time in creating the podcast and Mr Swann for providing pages of his life’s memoirs to assist with this article. Life in Lockdown

Stories from around the world...

Dave Allen’s Spanish Lockdown n the 2nd March 2020, my wife Lynne and I set off to drive the 1416 miles for a 4-week holiday in Los Alacazares in the Murcia region of Spain.

Summers are normally very busy with work; production and stage management at music festivals as well as sound engineering and mixing. I am also an Art Director for film and television working on many kinds of different productions.

Twelve days into our holiday, I called in to our local Bodega to pick up some wine and whilst paying at the till; a large truck went slowly by with a PA system on the back announcing, in Spanish, that from that night, President Sanchez and the regional governments had made the decision to lockdown the country. We were told that from Saturday we were not allowed out of our home. No shops, bars, restaurants were allowed to be open.

From Monday there were police roadblocks stopping every vehicle. People without a legitimate reason for being out were sent home and in some cases fined quite heavily.

At least one night a week, there would be Police, Civil Guard, Ambulances, Paramedics, Fire services all driving around slowly taking the applause of the population, as they did in the UK, whilst they played out, through the PA system, the best Spanish version of 'I will survive'. The faces of the people in the vehicles looking up at us, I will never forget; how proud we felt for having them there, and that they knew it was so appreciated. One little shop, which sold all kinds

of useful things, did start to open for a few hours a day, you were not allowed in but if you knew what you wanted you were served over a little table in the doorway.

It had been established that we couldn't get back to the UK; so we had to move to a house nearby in Los Narejos. We lived like this on and off for the next twelve weeks. At first outside exercise was only allowed at certain times of the day for particular age groups.

The local panaderia/bakery was one of the first places to re-open and became almost exciting as the Policia would drive past slowly observing who was out and what they were doing.

We were grateful for technology, for Netflix and the British news, and a wonderful man online, who kept everyone up to date by translating and interpreting all the government announcements.

Eventually international travel restrictions relaxed towards the end of June. I got the travel request paperwork from the British Embassy in Madrid.

We eventually packed the car and left on the 21st June.

It was a strange feeling for both of us on getting back home as we were away for over four months. On reflection; I've been lucky enough to lead a very interesting life thus far and this, unquestionably, was a great adventure. We went for a four-week holiday at the beginning of March and in the middle of July; nineteen weeks later, we could finally go out in our Leicestershire village once more."

Dominic Higgins, The Wildlife Trusts The environment charity sector is diverse in size and business model, and like any other sector, it suffered an immediate and catastrophic impact as the pandemic hit.

Household names such as The National Trust, RSPB - and The Wildlife Trusts - the movement I work for - collectively manage over 750,000 hectares of land and 800 miles of coastline. The sites we manage receive over 55 million visits a year from the public.

Financial losses have been felt through reduced visitor income from site closures, those who were reliant on grants, programme work, and events, have lost and continue to lose income from project fees and heavy short-term and ongoing losses from membership income.

Critically, lockdown, and the ongoing uncertainty demonstrated more than ever how much people depend on green and blue places for their mental and physical wellbeing. Wildlife Trusts webcam use shot

up by 2000% between March-June, compared with 2019! Hardly surprising…

Nature’s recovery is more important than ever There is certainly more to learn about the definitive origins of Coronavirus, but the breakdown in our relationship with nature seems to be at the heart of it. Our personal connection with nature is declining; many people do not feel like part of the natural world or appreciate or value all it might offer.

The result is a lack of empathy for the plight of wildlife and their precious habitats, and a lack of empathy leads to inaction.

Today though, we are facing two linked crises that demand urgent action: The climate crisis is driving nature’s decline; the loss of wildlife and habitats leaves us ill-equipped to reduce our emissions and adapt to change.

Health harm from climate change is increasing and will affect people living in more deprived communities most, where there is also less nature; children in deprived areas are nine times less likely to have access to green space and places to play.

The Wildlife Trusts want to change this. We must bring nature back into our daily lives.

All of our lives; and this needs big ideas.

That’s why we are working to put nature into recovery across at least 30% of land and sea by 2030.

As our President Emeritus, Sir David Attenborough says: "Every space in Britain must be used to help wildlife.”

James Robinson in London As an Army Musician no two working weeks are the same, and whilst my normal duties include playing piano for events at Buckingham Palace, I can also find myself being called upon to support wider military initiatives and operations. The last time I played piano publicly was 12th March for an Investiture with His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales at the Palace, less than two weeks before it was announced that Prince Charles had contracted the virus.

All normal musical duties had ceased by then and like all other musicians in the Household Division, I was put on OP RESCRIPT, the military’s response to the pandemic. We prepared to deploy for up to 6 months in support of civilian authorities including the NHS and Police and musical duties quickly gave way to daily briefings over Zoom, packing and preparation for operations. My wife Laura who serves with the Band of the Household Cavalry was also placed on OP RESCRIPT and with all this upheaval to our normal life it was a very anxious time.

Months passed whilst we waited at home, busying ourselves with physical fitness and mandated online training. We found time to continue our personal music practice and give our two young dogs lots of much needed attention. Whilst many of our colleagues were eventually deployed on operations in and around London, primarily

on Mobile COVID-19 Testing Units (MTUs), we simply waited for our turn to come. We were due to start MTU training in July but it had been decided by then that we would support ceremonial events of national importance instead. For me, that included playing piano for the BBC’s VJ75 Day broadcast from Horse Guards Parade. This incredibly moving tribute, featuring a host of celebrities, honoured all those who served and lived during the Second World War, remembering especially the armies of the British Empire which fought in the Far East, prisoners of war and the events surrounding the surrender of Japan. I also played for the Dame Vera Lynn tribute. Laura, my wife, was called upon to play at the Royal Hospital Chelsea for several special socially-distanced events to raise the spirits of the pensioners who had sadly suffered losses due to the virus, and for whom the anniversary of the end of the Second World War was a particularly poignant time.

As I write this, (August 2020), life is slowly returning to normal and our regular duties as Army Musicians are being reinstated as restrictions allow. I wish all pupils, staff, OGs and their families the very best for the remainder of 2020.

GIGG:NEWS Life in Lockdown

Hannah Wells in Dubai I started my new job here in Dubai and then 6 weeks later, we went into lockdown. When I say lockdown, I mean you weren’t allowed out from 8pm – 6am, there was a national emergency ring tone that would make your whole phone vibrate to alert you not to go out, it would make you jump every night. We then had a 24/7 lockdown for three weeks in April. To leave your home, you required a permit that you applied for online and were only allowed out for the essentials, for a few hours; if it was approved of course. I went 18 days without leaving my home – don’t worry, I had seriously stocked up.

My new job as Ops Manager for a media agency within Publicis Groupe required organising numerous internal team events in the UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon so all those events from March – December I had planned? Yeah they were cancelled because you can’t do a trampolining morning when everyone is stuck in their apartments! (If you know how, please share, this could be very handy for future reference).

Covid caused us to get creative and so we did.

We hosted origami classes, workouts, Bollywood dancing lessons, quiz nights, Tik Tok challenges (we are in media, it's deemed acceptable for adults), the BIG talk that allowed us to come together and discuss topics (that didn’t include Covid #infodemic), we even hosted a ‘bring your pet to work day’ because no one was actually

bringing their pets to the office, were they? It was so important for us to bring the team together because this is ex-pat life, we don’t have our families around us like most people around the world do, a lot of people live on their own, myself included; and for a lot of our younger team, they were experiencing being homesick for the first time (clearly they should have gone to boarding school)!

People were being tested physically and mentally and we were so lucky to be in a country that was doing everything it possibly could to overcome the pandemic; sanitising drones by night. I was also grateful to be in a company that supported us with consultant talks on how to handle the pandemic, fitness sessions and the freedom to do whatever it took to stay sane. Our team continues to work from home and everyone has just about adjusted to separating their life from professional to personal during the day. I have since managed to get back to the UK to surprise my parents, jumping through the new travel hoops that kept changing and appearing to spend some glorious summer days in the British sunshine. Life has returned to normal except it is accessorised by fancy colourful masks; our numbers are still on the rise as wave number two hits, but the UAE is determined to get the economy back on track.

Footprints: C. Roger Moss OBE (St, 1944 - 54) A Rare Curmudgeon

GIGG:NEWS Footprints hese lines from Longfellow’s A Psalm of Life, written in 1838 could have been written for Roger Moss. I first met him just before I was to take over as Housemaster of Style in the spring of 2000. He was a dedicated Old Giggleswickian and perhaps through his love of “Ike” and Joan Dutton even more so a dedicated old Stylite. He was excited to instil in me his respect of the house that he had been head of back in 1953-54. In latter years I have been privileged to be regularly entertained by Roger at Swaw Beck and it was in these more relaxed meetings, often with Barbara Gent that I came to learn what a remarkable man he was.

Antiquarian, Historian, Art collector, Soldier, Businessman, Intellect; are just some of the adjectives to describe this fascinating gentleman.

It is no surprise that his Giggleswick Register entry alone runs to 22 lines! It is hard to imagine the little boy who arrived at Catteral Hall, aged 8, in 1944, just as the Normandy campaign was breaking out from the hedgerows of Normandy, Roger was beginning his own campaign which would lead him to Service in the King’s African Rifles and on to Selwyn College Cambridge, where he read Social Anthropology under Edmund Leach. He then followed in family footsteps in becoming a Chartered Accountant, his burgeoning career in finance had begun. He quickly became FCA (Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants) and in so doing unsurprisingly he was a prize winner. He soon rose to be Deputy Chief Accountant at Bass Charrington Brewers and then to be Commercial Director at Bass. Moving from Bass he joined Tiny Rowland’s Lonrho corporation as Group Chief Accountant. Roger’s strong ethical code and views on corporate governance did not sit in tune with Mr Rowland’s regime. He moved from trade to transport as Commercial Director at Cunard and by 1979 had begun as Finance Director at British Airways.

It was during this period where he was signing off on the first regular timetabled services by Concorde to Miami and the latest version of the Rolls Royce powered Boeing 747 (the last of which have just left service with BA), that Roger was also involved in another momentous decision, this as a member of the Giggleswick governing body that brought about the introduction of full co-education at Giggleswick!

Whilst dealing with rampaging inflation at British Airways (fuel prices were rising by 70% in 1981), Giggleswick was transitioning to co-education across the senior school. Roger served on the governing body and the finance sub-committee in particular from 1974 to 1984. It was in 1984 however, that he was appointed as Finance Director of the world leading Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway Corporation.

HKMTR was one of the first case studies that I taught as a young Geography teacher in the new GCSE syllabus that appeared in 1988!

Roger had been a collector of art since his days in Cambridge but by the time he arrived in Hong Kong he was able to indulge his urge to collect pieces of very high value. His particular interest was in the form of Oriental sculpture. Whilst he loved all art, sculpture was his passion and he filled his home in Hong Kong’s Mid-Levels with an impressive quantity of stone.

Roger was enormously passionate about collecting, every weekend he would undertake expeditions to Hollywood Road and by the end of the morning, Roger would have added to his collection and after a ritual glass of beer (in a glass with a handle!) at Mad Dogs, he would retire to his 'Mosseum' to admire his latest acquisitions. A visitor once remarked that Roger’s collection did not shout ‘look at me’, rather it simply announced that ‘I am here’.

pioneer of bond issues on international financial markets and oversaw the MTRC’s achieving the highest possible A1 credit rating. In parallel he became an expert in the Buddhist art of the Wei, Sui and Tang Dynasty and was President of the Oriental Society of Hong Kong a founding governor of the Chinese International School, Chairman of the Community Chest and a Governor of the Hong Kong Ballet and International Adviser to Goldman Sachs.

In a 1999 exhibition, “Passion of Collecting”, Roger presented his ‘Mosseum of Form’. He described his collection as being about form regardless of their cultural origins. “Perhaps my love of form comes from my love of hills - living amongst and walking them as a schoolboy on Ascension Day walks at Giggleswick. When I was in the British army, I served in East Africa and became fascinated by landscapes, by people and things of that nature. It put me on the edge of exploration, which started me on subsequent opportunities to live, work, and travel in exotic places”.

His love of form, and what it tells us about civilisation, may also be traced to his time reading Social Anthropology at Cambridge. Roger built an extensive reference library of travel and art books including many first editions including the works of Scott and Shackleton. His circle of friends included academics, artists, curators and fellow collectors. Many of these friendships were forged during his time in Hong Kong.

It was in 2003 that the changing political situation in Hong Kong led Roger to chose to retire and bring his “great pile of stone”, back to the village that he loved. His close friendship with Leonard and Elizabeth Dutton led to his purchase of Swaw Beck from Mrs Dutton and there he relocated his Mosseum. It was in that lovely old house that Roger indulged his continued love of collecting, of sponsoring artists and of reading and researching local history. He also offered legendary hospitality in the shape of distilled juniper berries and botanicals! There was nothing

When Mrs Gent, our indispensable font of all archival Giggleswick knowledge informed us of her plan to retire, I feared Giggleswick may try to do without an Archivist. I too had made the decision that it was time to hang up my gown which had been residing in the Alumni office for the last 8 years. The need for an Archivist for me is as obvious as the chapel dome and when the suggestion was made that I should step into Mrs Gent’s shoes I was honoured to accept.

he loved more than to entertain interested people, to show them his collections and to indulge in ribald conversation on any topic that one might choose to raise. “Some people think that I’m a rare curmudgeon, but I just like to say it how it is”, he once said to me. While he was rare in thoughts, word and deed, and on occasion he could curmudgeon with the best of them, the truth is that there was far more breadth and depth to C Roger Moss OBE. After a short illness, he passed as he had wished, at peace in the comfort of Swaw Beck on the evening of Tuesday, 28th April. An extraordinary and very good man, Roger lived life to the fullest and the world is richer for him. He leaves a significant cultural void in our community and is greatly missed by all the lives his presence enhanced.

In Profile: Peter Richard Mattock (M,72) eter was born on the 27th of August 1954 in Keighley to parents Florence and Cedric. He attended Keighley Preparatory School, Heather Bank in Bingley and Giggleswick School, going on to higher education, taking a degree in Business Studies with French at what was Leeds Polytechnic.

Peter loved photography and built up quite a portfolio of photographs over the years, including landscapes, historical buildings and portraits of friends. A forthright, highly intelligent man who has been called one of a kind by someone who knew him better than most. Once met, we are told Peter would never be forgotten.

A regular at OG events, Peter was most recently at the Yorkshire Dinner in October 2019, sharing stories of his passion for cricket with Headmaster, Mark Turnbull.

Final Generous Gesture

His brother David, (M, 67) tells us that he had a passion for history which had started when he was still at school, and an interest he kept up throughout his life. He was particularly interested in the Middle Ages, castles and other historic buildings and battles. World War One was a another favourite subject. He visited the Somme several times, as well as other World War One battlefields.

After graduating from Leeds Poly, Peter started work at RHP in Ferrybridge and then moved on to Drum Engineering in Bradford, and it was here that Peter first met Patrick Rawnsley, his future business partner.

They were both recruited by Motec Industries.

Peter was made redundant and for a short time worked for a ceramics company before leaving and setting up Automint Ltd with Patrick 30 years ago, which dealt in the distribution of commercial vehicle parts. Automint was guided by some fundamental principles throughout its existence, many of which came from Peter’s beliefs as to how a company should be run. He was also very intuitive when it came to strategy in situations which can normally be chaotic and was a very good judge of people and character.

As a young boy Peter was the recipient of a scholarship to attend Giggleswick School and was later awarded a scholarship from the Bradford Chamber of Commerce to fund studies in France.

These experiences made him passionate about supporting access to good education and in later life he returned that generous gesture by giving scholarships to Giggleswick School at the time of the Quincentenary in 2012.

The two Mattock scholarships were awarded to Toby Smith and Tom Humphries, who were both in Paley House. Senior Master Neil Gemmell remembers them both well, as outstanding students who took full advantage of all the opportunities offered to them and who gave back in equal measure. Toby quoted his favourite Giggleswick moment as “winning Singing and Speaking in the Upper Sixth” and Tom was a keen runner. Toby went on to Lancaster University to study law and Tom planned to pursue his love of Geography and study at Sheffield University.

We are very grateful to Peter for his final gesture of a legacy to the School. We are humbled by his generosity at a time when the School is facing the greatest challenges in recent times as we support students through the uncertainties brought by the coronavirus pandemic. Thank you Peter.

OG Golf Society Tour The intrepid “Group of 6” in Montrose y lunchtime on 14 September, all six of our intrepid tourists had arrived at Monifieth for soup and sandwiches, and just to boost our slimming regimes, there were bowls of chips too. Nick Jefferies had worked hard arranging venues and recruiting tourists, and it was disappointing that we were missing our stalwarts Billy Haggas, Tim Wilman, Alex Driver, Gary & Steve Hartley, and John Ellacott.

of the previous day had been replaced by blue sky and sunshine, and we were all in high spirits (and Chris in his beloved shorts) when we teed off. It took several par threes before eventually Bob B managed to stop a ball on the green, not too far from the pin, and thus secure stewardship of the magnificent work of art, the Hagbag for the next 12 months. Chris Harwood scored a fine 35 points to win the Paley Cup – well played, Chris!.

Nick had arranged for us to play the shorter of the two Monifieth courses, the Ashludie, a pleasant links course, and at 5,123 yards it isn’t too daunting. As usual, there was a competition, and in this case it was Shute v The Rest of the World.

There were three Shutites in our Group of six, Bob Barker, Gary Burton, and me. Unfortunately, this was one of the rare occasions when Shute fell short of the Rest of the World.

Friday had arrived all too soon and we drove down south towards Edinburgh to our final venue of the tour, Pumpherston. This was the first time that any of us had played Pumpherston. It is a rolling parkland course of 5,716 yards off the yellow tees. The competition was the very important contest for the Yorkshire v Lancashire Cup (War of the Roses). Battle commenced, a kingdom wasn’t lost for the lack of a horse, and Yorkshire beat Lancashire by 89 points to 77. This was despite Lancashire employing a very accomplished mercenary - Garry Burton – in their team.

Day 2 after breakfast it was off to Edzell, a picturesque parkland course of 6,182 yards (off the yellow tees) with views of the Grampians. The contest that day was The Senior Tourists (in terms of tours attended) versus the Junior Tourists (comparatively buckies!).

Unfortunately, experience did not prevail, because although Nick J scored a magnificent 40 points, David C and I could manage only 40 more points between us.

Consequently, the Buckies won by 91 points to 80.

Wednesday dawned cold, grey and windy, as we drove down to play Montrose Links. The first nine holes were played into the wind, and Bob B played them like a master. We then turned round, and with the wind at our backs played much better.

Perversely though Bob’s play deteriorated in the easier conditions. He obviously thrives when life is hard.

Thursday was competition day with a vengeance, with the Paley Cup (individual excellence), and the infamous Hagbag (nearest the pin). The grey skies

It was time for our last soup and sandwiches of the tour, and prize giving. Our leader Nick got wearily to his feet and did the honours; we all owe him a big thanks for the work he put in to make this tour happen. I almost forgot to mention one last award, which was the OGGS Cameron Cup “for Valour”, minus plinth (!). Nick awarded this trophy to me. I’m not too sure that I demonstrated valour on any occasion during the tour, but I suppose that it was abundantly clear that I would never win a trophy with my golfing ability.

Then it was farewell and elbow bumps all round, before we hit the road. Let us all hope that the OGGS Tour in 2021 will take place in a safer saner world, and that our absent friends join us again.

Gigg win the Birkdale Bucket Again!

For the second year in succession, Giggleswick won the prestigious Birkdale Bucket Golf Competition. Held at Woodhall Spa, the home of the English Golf Union, and one of the top 20 courses in the country, Giggleswick held off notable public schools, namely, Uppingham, Sedbergh, Stowe, Oundle, Pocklington, Worksop, and Wrekin, to retain the trophy that they won in 2019.

What is even more remarkable is that before 2019, Giggleswick had not won this event since 1980. Talk about waiting for a bus!

The Competition consists of taking the best four scores from each team. Our team this year was, Chris Harwood, Garry Burton, Gary Hartley, Alex Driver, Nick Jefferies, and our Captain John Fairclough.

Nowell Cup & Stableford Winners

The weekend commences with an informal round of golf on the famous Hotchkin course, followed by Dinner in the equally famous “Dambusters H.Q.” the Petwood Hotel.

The main competition commences early Saturday morning, and after lunch there is avid viewing of one of the Six Nations Rugby matches.

Sunday sees the final format, the Foursomes, a competition where the word “sorry” is usually banned.

Following a sumptuous lunch in the Clubhouse, the results and the awards are declared, and we say our goodbyes for another year. The Birkdale Bucket is a first class three day event, and from next year Alex Driver is taking over the organisation.

Founding the Old Giggleswickian Masonic Lodge hen we are in the happy protected environment of our school days, it doesn’t quite strike us that when we leave, with all the feelings, celebrations and sometimes sadness of our last day, that there are some people that we may never see again for the rest of our lives. Our common lives, bonds, perhaps tensions, will be consigned to the ether of time and exist only in our memories.

Sometimes through sport, or our professional work, we re-encounter others from our Year or indeed any Year and there is a kinship born of shared experience, even simply knowing the same Teaching Staff or recollecting something as simple as Stidgers or Blue Papers, brings a smile of memories of the past.

As maturity settles upon us, we make our adult choices to pursue particular interests: Sport; Music; and in some cases Freemasonry.

The Founding Members of the Old Giggleswickian Lodge were all established Freemasons, who wished to combine their interest in Freemasonry with their common School ties and to maintain a link, an indissoluble link, with the place of their infant nurture.

So began the journey of the Old Giggleswickian Lodge with 26 Old Giggleswickians, some young, some older, (not unlike the CCF Centenary Dinner attendees who ranged from 20 to 85 years old).

22 of these Lodge Founders are shown in the accompanying picture taken in 1969.

The detail of the journey, which began on May 5th 1958 at 2:30pm and progressed by many small steps of indefatigable exertion to the Consecration Ceremony in Big School on March 28th 1969 at 3pm, is encapsulated in “Six of the Best” Founding Old Giggleswickian Lodge 8263, available for the modest sum of £5.00 with all proceeds going to Charity.

As you may have heard other Freemasons say: We are not a Secret Society but a Society with Secrets.

Our Secrets are purely symbolic and are part of a process of self improvement, intended to help all of us to become more useful to our families and to Society.

For an insight, it may be helpful to share some of the details of a powerful Oration that was delivered as part of the Consecration. It was prepared by

Rev. Canon R K Wood, then Rector of Tankersley but on the day, due to unfortunate illness, delivered by the Venerable C O Ellison.

Prior to the Oration may I also ask you to take a moment with me, to respect the fond memory of Henry Clifford Smith (O.G. 1896 - 1902) who led Freemasonry in Yorkshire West Riding in those days and sadly died prior to the Consecration meeting.

Excerpt from the 1969 Oration

“The Consecration of a new Lodge is a great occasion. An occasion fraught with high hopes for the future of the Lodge, what it can do, what influence it can bring to bear on the lives of others.

The purpose of an Oration, I take it, is to remind ourselves of the principles on which Freemasonry is founded: Love, Charity & Truth.

Love is a word that is apt to be treated these days, in one way, the physical, but in this academic body I need not remind you, the word love is capable of three different translations in the Greek language.

The Greek word Agape is the one we might well regard as the most important for our thoughts today. This is a word frequently to be found in the Bible and is there used to define the deepest spiritual union between God and man. This is the Love upon which all our human activities ought to

be best centred on earth, but directed to the eternal.

The Ceremonies in which we take part are important only in so far as the lessons we learn and take away with us, are capable of making our personal contributions to the life of the community, worthy and significant.

There is always the danger in any association or society to become introspective, or in other words, to allow our curious and ancient ceremonies to be nothing more than outward symbols, instead of becoming inward promptings, to be up and doing the work we are called upon to do as citizens within the society to which we have been called.

Love has no meaning unless it results in Charity.

I hope this Lodge will see that Charity is interpreted in all its aspects.

A Widow is a Widow very often not for a few weeks but for the rest of her life. An Orphan is a person who remains so for the rest of his or her life. Let Charity be your constant care.

The continuing care and compassion that springs from Love is just as important as the first welling up of sympathy in difficult times, and that perhaps is where the third of our principles becomes important.

Unless we are true to our beliefs, our ideals, our aspirations, we shall not achieve the end we set out to grasp. Truth is not merely veracity; it is part and parcel of a man's whole being; it calls for a fundamental and uncompromising morality; it calls for stability in character; it calls for an inner quality of life and action.

When Truth is put into practice in terms of this definition then life becomes a challenge, an adventure, a great and joyful experience, and to this, I believe, we are called as members of our Order.

If, therefore, this New Lodge accept the three great principles, it cannot fail to establish a new source of light and life, in the lives of those with whom its members come in close contact.

Your title, The Old Giggleswickian Lodge, must ever remind you of this ancient place of learning, perhaps of those men enshrined in your windows, Latimer, More, Bunyon, Caedman, Gordon, Livingstone, and not least of William Paley, an old boy of the school who contributed to theological understanding and whose Father was, I believe, Headmaster for 54 years. These men have established a tradition which enshrines within it a challenge and an opportunity.

Events Review London Drinks

The Chop House, Paternoster Square, 19 September 2019 On a late Summer evening in September last year, we gathered in the iconic Paternoster Square for our annual London Drinks.

The filming location for the popular Channel 4 show 'First Dates', the Paternoster Chop House, was the chosen venue to meet and enjoy an evening tipple whilst welcoming new London based OGs to their first event as well as catching up with old school friends.

Joined by former President of the OG Club, Richard Warburton, the then current President Mark Ehlinger, some members of the teaching staff, many YOGS and older OGs too.

Due to Covid this year, we were unable to host the London Drinks for 2020. However, having nearly a dozen attendees that mentioned this was their first event really highlights the importance of hosting a casual London event as it enables us to connect with many OGs who are based in the capital with great potential to grow our network.

Northcote, 16 November 2019 In a change to the usual format, it was felt a Michelin star restaurant on a Saturday afternoon might be very appealing to our community of Old Giggleswickians in the Lancashire area.

32 guests sat down to a sumptuous lunch priced at just ÂŁ45.00 per head for 3 courses with wine, served in the exquisite Louis Roederer private dining room at Northcote Manor Restaurant.

The guest list was a wonderful mix of OGs, Hon OGs, parents and staff with the youngest OG of 28, James Denney (P, 10) and the oldest OG of 83, Danny Garforth (C, 55).

Yorkshire Dinner

Headingley Cricket Ground 4 October 2019 In my final year at Giggleswick, I was not expecting to receive an invitation to an OG Dinner. Normally the Head Boy and Girl would be attending these functions, but luckily for me the Head Boy was out on an interview, therefore leaving a space. I was really shocked when Mr Bellis asked me if I wanted to go in place of the Head Boy. Without much hesitation I agreed. Mr Bellis did not however disclose the venue, as he wanted to see my reaction. The Head Girl was also meant to be attending but she was ill at the last minute, and the responsibility fell to me to represent every student. As I got onto the minibus, the nerves started to kick in, but faded the closer and closer we got to the venue.

The bus pulled up to a Stadium that I recognised. It was Headingley, the place where only a few months previous England managed to pull off one of the greatest cricketing moments of all Ashes history. As the bus came to a halt I thought we would be going somewhere else to eat, but I was seriously wrong. Once we arrived at the place where we were going to have our meal, I saw the sign that said Directors Suite. My jaw remained on the floor for the remainder of the night. As I stepped into the Suite, I spotted the windows that had an unobstructed view onto this fabulous ground.

I had to force myself away from the window to meet all the OGs that turned up to this event. I met so many brilliant people who did amazing things not only in school but outside as well.

They were very interested to hear my view on the school and why I came to this event. The night was filled with great food and even better stories of what the school was like back in the day. It was great to see that some aspects of the school haven’t changed a bit, but also the things that did. I wish I could recall everyone that turned up to that event, but I am terrible when it comes to names. I will never forget the stories that were told though, and the faces of the people I met.

Given the chance I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Rugby Trip to Burmuda

Gathering in the Sun Inn, Kirby Lonsdale, a select group of OGs enjoyed a traditional Christmas lunch. Travelling distances were somewhat extreme, with Guy Richardson (P, 78) flying in from Palma, Spain and Michael Barr (M, 77) walking from Whittington. Some of the more enthusiastic drinkers even came in camper vans to snooze away until the next day!

Typical to an OG event, there was lots of banter and reminiscing, with particular memories shared of the 1978 rugby trip to Bermuda (see photograph).

Winster Shoot 6 January 2020

An early morning meeting at Windermere railway station, followed by breakfast and damson gin, saw the group ready to head off for the day’s shooting.

The group consisted of 14 guns for 10 pegs (4 guns sharing a peg). We started with a partridge drive and everyone seemed a bit nervous with lots of missed shots. The second drive was up in an area of woodland and a tarn. I swapped pegs with Andrew Smith as he was on peg 10 and a long walk away. Andrew had a great stand and some testing birds. Following coffee, the rain came resulting in two very wet stands. Messrs Crombie, Warburton and Edwards had a good sport in a small garth behind the estate farm and nothing got away and then for the last stand the sun came out creating a nice end to the day.

The group had a fantastic day and appreciation was given to the hosts for their hospitality.

All this Running Malarkey All this running malarkey stems from a discussion with my predecessor, Richard (Dick) Warburton (OG President 2018/19), as I accepted a nomination as President Elect.

Dick and I surveyed the OG event calendar and noticed that the emphasis tilted precariously towards food and drink. Sport and exercise, team or individual, barely got a look in.

Armed with this data, I somehow persuaded Dick that, (with the permission of Dan Cook, Director of Sport at that time), he and I would run Scarrig 2019, as a pilot to judge whether we could reintroduce an annual OG Scarrig into the OG events calendar.

Dick avoided finishing in 2nd place, as he always has. We debriefed with the School and GS Sports Department cleared us to promote an annual OG Scarrig event, starting in Spring Term 2020.

Meanwhile, in November I became aware of an Inter-Independent School Alumni team race, to which Giggleswick School Alumni had, so far as historic records show, never entered.

On 14th December 2019, a team of 5 OGs convened on Wimbledon Common and changed all that.

For 66 consecutive years, the UK Independent Schools had, miraculously, managed to hold this event, without us. In its 67th year, the Thames Hare & Hounds Club welcomed the debutant team, from BD24.

The OGs (Nicole Elliott (C, 12), Sarah-Annie Emmerson (St, 01), Julian West (P, 91), Graham Oliphant (S, 93) and I), colloquially, The Mighty Phew, pitched up on Wimbledon Common, and completed a tough, 8.5Km cross country course, in a field of 300 Alumni members from 14 high profile, substantially larger independent school alumni cohorts.

Team GIGG was launched.

“ I responded to the invitation to compete in virtual run activities as I love a challenge, but I also love the camaraderie of being part of a team. In lockdown, my little local run club couldn’t meet, so the Gigg Challenge, combined with the Dales trails that I regularly run, seemed a perfect way to continue counting the miles for a common purpose. I loved it, but then I do love leader boards & Strava stats!

“This was my chance to do something. I have had two children and since then I haven’t done any running or any exercise and at that point, I wanted to get fit and start back at running. Just as lockdown came, I found out about a virtual weekly 5K race happening and that we’d submit our race time each week. I was up for it. I doubt I would have been so motivated if I hadn’t joined the Alumni team. I have enjoyed everything we have done and am looking forward to representing Giggleswick at the Thames Hare & Hounds Alumni race, actual or virtual, in December 2020”.

Whilst the founder runners of Team GIGG were largely a Greater London and Home Counties based cohort, 37 runners, including two Mighty Phew founders (Sarah-Annie and I) registered for OG Scarrig 2020, on 29th February. 29 runners were set to run the course at Giggleswick, and a further 8 would run a synchronised course elsewhere, as a virtual race cohort from Canada, Poland, Singapore, Vietnam, New York, South Africa, and in the UK, Settle, and York.

On the eve of Scarrig Day, our luck ran out, the race was cancelled. Heavy rainfall from Storm Jorge rendered the course too dangerous.

As one door closes, another opens. Within a few days, our well-being initiative was back on the calendar, for very different reasons.

The organisers of the annual Alumni race on Wimbledon Common, contacted me to invite

Team GIGG to trial an Alumni Virtual Weekly 5Km competition. Within a matter of days, the Alumni Race (AR) morphed into Lockdown Alumni Run (LAR). Team GIGGL (as we now became known) committed to growing from 5 to 55 runners.

For the next 17 weeks, a growing squad of OGs and COGs enthusiasts, competed with the Alumni Teams from the likes of Stonyhurst, Sedbergh and Eton, with whom we had run over Wimbledon Common in December.

By 10th May, with great support from social media expertise, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Strava, Team GIGGL had grown into a squad.

Runner numbers continued to rise. By 17th May, the squad numbers had swelled to 77, from which for the ensuing 3 weeks, the GIGGL actual runs submitted exceeded 50.

During the next 10 weeks Team GIGGL consistently found themselves in the top rankings for either number of entrants or finishing times.

The Lockdown Alumni Running (LAR) Competition served many purposes. Squad GIGGL attracted 93 Giggleswickians who turned out to enjoy their running, to post a run time, some with great vigour and accomplishment, others just wanting to make a commitment to themselves and to their Giggleswickian team colleagues, to keep fit.

I hope that by the time you are reading this article, Team Mighty Phew, or perhaps now not so few, will have completed the 2020 Alumni Race, either physically or virtually, and that our readers may give some thought to competing in an Alumni Scarrig event, at the next opportunity.

Walter Morrison: Centenary Festival or some of you, that name might mean nothing, whilst to others it may ring the gentlest of bells … and to yet others, especially those of you who love the Chapel, Walter may loom large. For the Giggleswick Chapel, built in the Byzantine style at the cost of almost £30,000 (worth approximately £4 million today), was the work of Walter Morrison of Malham Tarn House. Next year sees the centenary of his death, the 120th anniversary of the dedication of the Chapel and a ninemonth festival celebrating his life and works.

Walter Morrison (1836-1921) was the ninth of 11 children born to James and Mary Morrison. He grew up in London and at the family estate at Fonthill, Wiltshire, purchased by his father in 1830, and at Basildon Park in Berkshire.

Walter was educated at Eton and then Balliol College, Oxford. Why, then, was he so interested in Giggleswick School?

James Morrison was a selfmade millionaire who, from humble beginnings as a haberdasher, became the wealthiest commoner in England through hard work and entrepreneurial flair. He equitably distributed his wealth and estates among the members of his large family. Walter’s estate was centred on Malham Tarn House and he inherited it, aged 21, having just graduated from Balliol, and £300,000 (worth approximately £34 million today) on his father’s death in 1857. Before coming to Malham, he completed his Grand Tour, visiting not only Europe but America, Egypt and Syria. His travels in the Middle East inspired Walter’s lifelong passion for Biblical Archaeology (as it was called then), leading to his role as Treasurer of the Palestine Exploration Fund and ultimately to the design of the Giggleswick Chapel.

Walter entered Parliament for the first time as Liberal MP for Plymouth in 1861, aged just 25, and sat until 1874. He then served Skipton as a Liberal Unionist from 1886 to 1892. He defected from the Liberal party due to his disagreement with Gladstone over Home Rule for Ireland, which Walter was passionately against. He was said to have swapped all the blue crockery at Malham Tarn House for yellow when he changed party!

He was elected for a second term as MP for Skipton, 1895-1900.

From 1860, Walter usually spent around five months each year in Malham, from August (the glorious twelfth) to early December. From Christmas through to March, avoiding the cold, he returned regularly to Southern Europe, Morocco and Egypt. He had suffered as a young man from tuberculosis, but regained his health through serious walking, regularly undertaking the six miles from Settle railway station to Tarn House, and developing a deep knowledge and an abiding love of the area. He is said to have papered his smoking room with Ordnance Survey maps to prevent his servants putting them away. He held shooting parties and luncheons for the many groups visiting Tarn House, including Boy Scouts, fishermen, archaeological societies, geological groups and children’s galas. John Ruskin, Charles Darwin and Charles Kingsley were amongst his many personal guests and it was in Malham that Kingsley was inspired to write The Water Babies.

Morrison joined the Settle Cave Exploration Society after the discovery of the famous Victoria Cave in 1869, and in 1975 ‘W Morrison 1867’ was found scratched onto a cave wall at the base of a mile-long pothole below Darnbrook.

Walter became a Governor of Giggleswick School in 1864 at the age of 28, in response to a call for volunteers. He was a governor for nearly sixty years and chairman of the board twice. Reading between the lines of a contemporary newspaper article, it sounds as though the school had been experiencing some difficulties. When his investments and other business called him away, he wrote long and detailed letters conveying his opinions on various agenda items, which may have been a mixed blessing!

In 1897, the Governors debated how to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Walter suggested building a chapel, entirely at his own expense. He wanted to experiment: in his view it ought to be a gothic building and yet have a dome. However, it needed to be in-keeping with the environment. Architect Sir Thomas Graham Jackson (1835–1924) was appointed and the rest, as they say, is history!

few memorials to this otherwise unassuming figure, depicting Morrison holding a model of the chapel. At the same time as the chapel was built, the architect also designed a gatehouse with lodge and a cricket pavilion, all paid for by Morrison, at a cost of £3,128 (worth approximately £400,000 today). A portrait of Walter Morrison by Sir Hubert von Herkomer CVO RA hangs above the stairs, in the Memorial Library at the school. The painting, which cost £643 10s and was paid for by subscription, was unveiled on 28 July 1903.

Walter Morrison died in 1921, leaving Malham Tarn estate to a nephew. His obituary in The Times summed him up as a “man of simple personal tastes and an acute sense of the responsibilities of wealth”.

2021 marks the centenary of his death and the 120th anniversary of the Chapel’s dedication. The Museum of North Craven Life at The Folly, Settle, along with Giggleswick School, the Malhamdale Local History Group and a range of other local organisations will be holding a festival to honour the life and work of Walter Morrison. The Festival will run from May to December and will include

guided walks and self-guided trails (designed to encourage exploration of Malhamdale), talks and exhibitions across a range of venues, including the Chapel. We will tell the stories of Walter’s life, with an emphasis on his philanthropy, in a way that is accessible to all. If funds can be raised, the Museum will experiment with augmented reality to link our collections with the landscape for all to enjoy.

We also plan to recreate the dedication service of the Chapel itself, 120 years to the day, following the original order of service.

10 years of our Theatre

t’s a strange feeling to look back over the first 10 years in the life of our new theatre. The similarities with starting out in life are uncanny, from literally learning to walk, then run, making mistakes and correcting them, before finally settling into the rhythm of life! Then suddenly you’re in double digits! You feel all grown up and look back at those first ten years and wonder where did they go and what did I do?

In early 2010, I was given a tour of the empty shell that was the former Sports Hall, Covered Playground or Walled Playground depending on your vintage. It was hard to imagine at that stage the outstanding work that would be produced by it in the future. Even the designers were skeptical that the school’s wish to have ‘the most flexible space possible’ would ever be fully borne out. Later that year we opened the doors with ‘Alice’ a new piece which merged elements of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. With its circus-based design and audience seated in traverse, it not only proved the flexibility of the space but also a very steep learning curve for its new custodians!

School life has always been at the heart of what the Richard Whiteley Theatre is for and much like other areas of the school, the theatre has taken on its own unique identity over the last decade. It has allowed us as staff to harbour more ambition and for this to be reflected on the children. Large scale musicals such as Les Misérables, West Side Story, Sweeney Todd and Bugsy Malone have gone alongside plays like Lord of the Flies, A Christmas Carol and Wendy and Peter Pan. All these productions are realised to

the most professional standards possible allowing students to give passionate and assured performances to their peers, parents, staff and the wider public.

Alongside this thriving programme of co-curricular work, the theatre provides for the day-to-day needs of the school through academic teaching, assemblies, lectures, open mornings and many other events.

The development of our new theatre at Giggleswick was always seen as a bigger opportunity than just providing an excellent school resource. This resource was to be shared with the local community and be used as an opportunity to bring some of the latest performing arts to the region for the benefit of not only the community but also Giggleswick students.

Spearheaded by Helen Lindley, a programme of

professional touring shows was developed and relationships created with artists that remain until this day. We have hosted performances about alcohol abuse, personal debt, death in conflict and eating disorders. Cheery, feel good shows? Not really, however they have all contributed to the curiosity and awareness of Giggleswick students across the school, allowing them to grow in not only their academic development but in their personal development as well.

It has not all been doom and gloom though. There have been shows about saving the humble bee, Shakespeare productions with a twist, and a show in a camper van, all of which support our artistic vision of bringing the best, new writing and emerging artists to the heart of the Dales. Community engagement was at the heart of our ambition from day one and through the touring work coming to Giggleswick we have reached new audiences from right across the local area. Combined with this we have hosted local orchestras, choirs, dance schools and other groups for rehearsals, performances, and events.

As I look back over ten years of ‘events’ it is hard to pick favourites, how would one categorise them? Do you split them into school, community and professional events or do you acknowledge that the arts are all encompassing and should treat everyone as equal? The high-profile ones are up there, the BBC Broadcast of Any Questions? Glover Lectures with Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson and Michael Buerk and the return of home-grown talent in withWings.

The events that are etched most firmly in my memory are not the professional ones, but the ones where those involved are honing their craft or just doing it for the sheer pleasure. Like the 2011 visit of a choir from Durban Girls College, which saw the chapel full on two days to hear them sing, the Settle Orchestra concert with Darren Everhart dressed as a dinosaur or the joy on the faces of a local primary school pupil who has just spent an hour entranced by the world of King Arthur. The greatest satisfaction, however, goes almost unnoticed.

Standing in the control room over the last ten years (which undeniably has the best view in the house) watching hundreds of children take to stage, from Mill House to the Sixth Form. They are nervous, but

confident. They have developed skills through a process that has been as professional as possible, and they have made memories that will last a lifetime. As an Old Giggleswickian, I can relate to the journey our students go on. I think back to a cold December evening in Chapel at the end of the last millennium. At some point during a performance of Jesus Christ Superstar, something clicked – this was what I wanted to do with my life. Watching students have that same experience at whatever level day in day out is what makes our theatre so special.

At the end of March our theatre, like all others around the country went dark. As lockdown arrived, we cancelled a number of professional and community performances, which sadly still cannot be rearranged. However, there is hope. In October, we staged our first performance of the academic year, with a small select live audience and by the time you read this many more arts venues will have come back to life in some form. It’s not easy to make a performance in this world of uncertainty, but we must. We will continue to fill our theatre with joy, performance, and creativity so that when we can, we will welcome back as many people as possible to enjoy it together. The arts are important, please embrace it in whatever way you can, knowing that our theatre is here and will be for many more years to come.

Gigg:Circular Retirements Barbara Gent Archivist Exceptionale 1989 – 2020 After a chance meeting and a glass of sherry, Barbara Gent was appointed by Peter Hobson, Headmaster 1986-1993 as Librarian and Archivist in 1989. At the time, the Library was located on the first floor of the Memorial Library building. She also took over the Brayshaw Library and together with Peter’s wife Amanda and a team of volunteers from the local NADFAS organisation, she catalogued the collection of local history resources, including the Brayshaw Collection, and valuable first editions.

When the Sharpe Library came into being, Barbara’s role within the school began to change.

It was always a joy to tackle new projects together. Her input into the scheme to refurbish the Memorial Library in 2004 was invaluable, including helping to choose new furniture, lighting and the careful restoration of the benches recording the names of the fallen in two World Wars. Rummaging around in the safe one day, I came across, neatly folded in an old tobacco tin, the original 1507 lease of the land which had enabled James Carr to build the first school and the 1610 document recording the purchase of the land. Barbara was delighted and had them carefully framed.

Her encyclopaedic knowledge of the school’s history came into its own when she served on the 2012 Committee, chaired by the then Chairman HH Judge David Stockdale QC, OG, which was set up to mastermind the 500th Anniversary celebrations of the school.

Barbara was a great expert on the Chapel and very much enjoyed showing visitors round whenever asked. She wrote the Chapel Guide in 2018, providing wonderful insights into the people who were inspired to create and furnish the building.

Barbara was a delight to work with, with an infectious enthusiasm and a lovely twinkle in

her eye, ready to help solve any problem, and willing to share her extensive knowledge of English Literature which she had taught in a previous career. Her legacy is an extremely valuable one.

Giles Bowring, Giggleswick Bursar 2000 - 2016

As Sharpe Librarian I had the great pleasure to benefit from Barbara’s wide knowledge and creativity. Her tiny office at the top of the War Memorial building stone staircase was shelved to the ceiling and packed full of archive boxes and books and it was from there she produced imaginative displays, welcomed staff, pupils OGs and outside visitors to the school and produced publications like the Yorkshire Muffin. As a fellow member of the school staff she lent much gravitas to the Senior Common Room and she will be remembered for her kindness, sharp wit and friendliness both to the teaching and non-teaching staff. It has been a privilege to work alongside her.

Linda Evans, Sharpe Librarian 2005 - 2019

Susan Watts-Wood Woman of many talents 2001 – 2020 The beginning of the new school year for any member of Senior House Staff back in the 2000s was a jolt back into reality. Knocks at the door, door-bells ringing, dogs barking, small children bleating and typically back in those days in Style we had 25 new starters of all ages. So, with all this in mind you need all your staff to be firing on all cylinders, ready to help field those questions and to help take the pressure off. Into the melee arrives this woman that I had never met before, was she a parent, a relative or a messenger from reception? She dispensed tea, wise and soothing conversation and cheerful friendliness. It was as if Mary Poppins had been booked in for the day to help out. “This is Sue Wood the new ICT teacher who has been added to the Style team” says Mrs Bellis.

From that day Sue Wood (Watts-Wood as she was to become when she married Paul in 2008) became one of my go-to colleagues.

She combined the work ethic of a busy and conscientious mother with the skills of pastoral wizard. Having read Business Studies at Leeds University she converted to Law. She then pursued a successful career as a restauranter before the birth of her son, Sam in 1994. Not content to be juggling all these balls, Sue then embarked upon the challenge of bringing up her son whilst undertaking a PGCE in which she converted to the teaching of Information Technology. It is no surprise that the then Head of ICT, Martin Lawson (who then went on to Lecture at Lancaster in ICT Education) spotted Sue’s potential and appointed her to his young department. I am eternally grateful to Martin for doing that as it was to the great benefit of all who worked with her that Sue joined the staff that year.

Comfort zones have never been a thing for Sue. Notwithstanding that weekly duties in a boarding house were new to her she was soon asked what she could offer to the provision of games and extra-curricular activities. Netball was added to her duties, training as an umpire and a coach she travelled across the county with her junior team. Umpiring with her natural authority and sensible pragmatism she took the team on tour to Barbados too. Then she joined the CCF RAF section attending officer training at Cranwell and joining the section on camps and on the ranges as well as at air experience flying days. She became a much valued teacher of Information Technology and it was no surprise that when Martin Lawson left

for Lancaster University, Sue was appointed to lead the department. The need for women to hold roles of this sort in such subjects as a role model was clear and the choice must have been easy given her meticulous attention to detail in marking whilst presenting engaging and cleverly thought through lessons.

It was, however, in pastoral care that Sue was absolutely outstanding. If there was ever an evening that as a housemaster I felt utterly comfortable with leaving the premises it was Wednesday. Returning to the house I would know that issues, if there had been any, would have been handled, documented and put to bed. Happy girls were happier and worried ones encouraged and soothed. Her way of talking to and managing teenage girls was almost mercurial. For that good sense and trust I will always be grateful. It remains for me the greatest shame that she never took the opportunity to lead a house herself as it was an opportunity missed for all those concerned.

After Style, Sue turned her hand to tutoring in Paley House and her experience in bringing up her own son was soon brought to bear in Paley and to the benefit of that team.

Curriculum demands and the growing knowledge of her pastoral skills meant that she moved her teaching to include PSHE and Curriculum for Life which more recently she headed. Sue began also to teach Business Studies and helped to establish the important BTEC Business course which required renewed and detailed one-to-one teaching and input.

Not surprisingly the grades achieved by her students were above and beyond expectation.

The hats that Sue wore and the roles that she filled show what a talented and dedicated colleague we have lost to retirement. Her family will now be organised, cared for and supported and we shall miss her can-do attitude and down to earth positivity.

James Bellis 39

Jim Bellis Geography to Alumni 1996 – 2020 It is an invidious task to summarise, let alone do justice to the impact of James P Bellis on Giggleswick School in the last 24 years. Hopefully what is recorded here will simply be a prompt for all the very personal memories many of us will have of his contribution, in whatever role it has been our privilege to encounter him.

Following spells at Fettes College and St Peter’s, York, Jim was appointed Head of Geography in January 1996, taking over a well-established and highly successful department located in this nirvana for all physical geographers. His enthusiasm and passion for his subject was infectious and one of his proudest legacies must be the number of A level students whom he inspired to study geography at university.

His classrooms were always a gallimaufry of all things geographical: globes hanging from the ceiling; flags and models; and maps of expeditions – all serving to stimulate eager and enquiring minds.

Fieldwork was keenly anticipated and trips to local limestone scenery supplemented by glaciation in the Lakes and trips to Scotland and Iceland. An elite few share fond memories of his astonishing impersonation of walruses and his enraptured lectures at the snout of yet another glacier.

As with all great schoolmasters, Jim has contributed to every aspect of school life.

A Flight Lieutenant in the RAF section of the CCF he naturally named one of his beloved bearded collies, Biggles. He trod the boards in G&S productions, entertained with perfect comic timing in staff revues and supported drama groups performing at the Fringe. Jim coached rugby in his own inimitable way, building a real sense of team and delivering heroic half-time talks, worthy of any Roman general facing sure defeat.

He accompanied sports tours to Canada and Australia, umpired cricket and in his latter years even managed a basketball squad. Jim’s interest in Highland Games somehow led to an obsessive love of Tug of War, introducing an annual contest that almost hijacked Sports Day. For many recent pupils, the sight of Mr B, in striped blazer and felt cap (definitely NOT a

baseball cap) and the sound of him bellowing ‘Take the Strain!’ and ‘Heave’ will be an enduring memory of school life.

To his roles as tutor in Paley, then Housemaster of Style (2000 – 2012) and tutor and Housemaster of Nowell (2017 2019) Jim brought his love of public school life and a warm sense of fun. Pupils learned to respect and value the traditions of those who had gone before and to establish some new traditions of their own. A quiet man of faith, Jim has always fully supported Chapel life, sharing his own particular brand of muscular Christianity through some inspirational talks. Firmly believing that an appreciation of the finer qualities of life: pork pie eating, cheese tasting, Burns’ Night rituals and listening to vinyl are essential educational foundations for every young man, and indeed woman, he made it his mission to introduce them to the pastoral curriculum. Jim has always cared deeply for all of the young people in his charge, combining no-nonsense practical advice with an unstinting willingness to give of his time, listening to and supporting Giggleswickians and their parents in any way he could. In all of this he has always been most ably and unstintingly supported

by Susan. As a family, the warmth and generosity of their hospitality is renowned; it epitomises the very best characteristics of Jim’s Yorkshire upbringing and his subsequent devotion to all things Scottish.

As a colleague, one could not have wished for greater personal support and camaraderie, nor could the school have asked for a more loyal servant. There are many younger staff who have benefitted from his experience and mentoring over the

years, and whilst nowadays I am told he may occasionally nod off in a staff meeting, there are few who are blessed with his resilience and energy for life.

The penultimate episode in Jim’s Giggleswick story has been his role as Alumni Liaison officer. Jim has enjoyed getting to know former generations of pupils, carefully storing away each tale he has been told and constantly seeking ways to re-unite former classmates and to celebrate the achievements and life events of Giggleswickians young and old. He has

successfully bridged the gap between the generations and even added two of his own family to the growing number of active OGs. It seems entirely fitting that this September, the legendary Jim Bellis will be stepping into the shoes of another Giggleswick legend, Mrs Barbara Gent, School archivist and even longer-serving valiant custodian of the school’s precious history. So, Jim, this is not really retirement - there’s still plenty of time left for you to write your own final chapter…

Sarah Williamson, Hon OG (1989 – 2017)

Bob Barker (S, 63) OG Club President 2009 & Committee member 2009 - 2020 My father was very fond of the expression “nothing lasts for ever”. However, in the case of Bob Barker (Shute 58-63), it appears that it is almost possible to contradict the theory.

In Robert Anthony Barker FCA, we have a former pupil for whom Giggleswick School courses through his veins. Apart from Giggleswick, only his two children Joanne and Richard (both OGs), and a certain Lancashire football team (I can’t bear to use the name), hold more importance in the life of this effervescent, energetic, and genial Gentleman.

His school career gives us an insight into what his life would be like. He gained his 1st X1, 1st XV, and Fives colours, as well as being appointed the Colour Sergeant in the CCF under Major Wardle. For his final year he was a Praepostor and Head of Shute. In our day at Gigg, if you had those achievements on your Valete, you were indeed a big cheese!

It was about 1985 when Bob discovered golf.

This particular pastime (in particular OG golf) is very fortunate to have him, and there simply is not enough space to list the Committees that he sits on, or the service that he has given to the game. Needless to say that he played the game off a distinctly handy 5 handicap, and still puts golfers half his age to shame.

His contribution to OG golf is immense. As Past Captain, and the current Secretary and Treasurer of the OG Golfing Society he is the powerhouse that drives a very buoyant Society forward year in year out.

Away from golf, Bob has served the school in so many different ways, as President of the OG Club in 2009-10, and as a Committee member from 2009 to the present day.

Sadly all good things DO come to an end, and it was with typical foresight that Bob has resigned his position from the O.G. Committee, stating that it was time for younger OGs to take up the mantle. He is not lost to Giggleswick, and his engaging smile and ever youthful looks will still be seen around. Perhaps he will have even more spare time to drive over the border to support his beloved (I will have to mention it) Burnley F.C. where he is a lifelong season ticket holder.

It is not possible to wish Bob Barker a Happy Retirement, as those words simply do not resonate with him, it will be more a case of “when one door closes, another one opens”.

Good luck Bob with whatever else you find to occupy those precious minutes, the O.G. Committee will miss you.

Nick Jefferies, Carr 65-70 41

Louise Ladds Teacher / Style House Housemistress / Assistant Pastoral Lead 2009 - 2020 Louise arrived at the school in 2009 as a Languages teacher. She immediately made an impact as a teacher who completely understood the ethos and nature of a boarding school, and was always very quick to volunteer to help the students and her colleagues. When the vacancy arose for Style House Housemistress, Louise grasped the reins and

very quickly made the girls feel welcomed, supported and part of a school community. She spent six highly productive (and competitive) years in this role, before moving on to the Assistant Pastoral Lead role within the school. This position allowed her to continue the excellent pastoral care that she developed in Style, but also to have more of a whole-school impact and presence. Louise has now moved on to Deputy Headship at Wakefield Girls High School, where I know she will maintain these standards and lead the next generation of students and staff, in a caring and supportive manner.

Lockdown Art Gallery In May, following a suggestion from OG, Nicola Ehlinger (St, 11) the Lockdown Art Gallery was launched to give an opportunity to share talents.

Each week, OGs, parents and students submitted their creative art to the Development Office and the entries were displayed on Facebook for voting by the members to decide the weekly winner. The Gallery ran from May to July, with a Winners Gallery in the final week. Julia Griffiths (C,12) was crowned the ultimate champion with her fabulous painting of a Highland Cow and was awarded a Giggleswick Chilly’s bottle for her efforts.
