2013 CHIANTI CLASSICO

Rocca di Montegrossi 2013 Chianti Classico Mid ruby. Bright concentrated strawberry nose. Just medium-bodied palate with hints of cocoa dust and cherry on the finish. Rustic bitterness if not unpleasant.

2012 CHIANTI CLASSICO Castello di Bossi 2012 Chianti Classico

Youthful mid ruby. Distinct, leafy cherry with hints of cassis and cedar. Fantastic firm chewy tannins, as you would expect from the commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga, and supple fruit. Slow to develop on the palate but with wonderful length and style. This can age.

Burgundian, almost. (WS) Drink 2015-2020

Castello di Meleto 2012 Chianti Classico

Mid crimson. Brooding dense and earthy nose and just a little rustic. Concentrated fruit but with little real expression, a bit muted, really, at least for now. Quite tannic finish too. (WS) Drink 2015-2019

Dievole 2012 Chianti Classico

Mid ruby with orange tinges. Quite stalky and medicinal on the nose with hints of vanilla. Really old-fashioned.

The perfumed fruit is hiding behind piles of drying tannins. (WS) Drink 2015-2016

2012 CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA

Castello di Meleto, Vigna Casi Riserva 2012 Chianti Classico

Youthful-looking mid crimson. Quite savoury nose with notes of rusty nails and a little dusty. The fruit is suppressed on the nose. The palate is yet more austere and a little void of fruit. Lacks charm. Hard finish. (WS) Drink 2015-2017

San Giusto a Rentennano, Le Baròncole Riserva 2012 Chianti Classico

Beautiful mid ruby. Impressive and very Tuscan nose of cherry, stones, tobacco and nutmeg. Savoury, perfumed palate with lots of depth. Transparent, almost racy red fruit and powdery tannins. If you must buy a Riserva in this vintage it might as well be this one. (WS) Drink 2016-2024

Cask sample. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Almost iodine nose with notes of malt and lifted cherry, pulling you right in. Lovely ripe cherry fruit with just enough acidity to convince. (WS) Drink 2015-2024

2011 GRAN SELEZIONE

Castello di Meleto, Gran Selezione 2011 Chianti Classico

Deep ruby with bright orange tinges. Rich cherry with a hint of oak. Just a tiny bit stewed and pushing all the popular buttons. Ends quite sweet but there is acidity to keep it lively. Just. (WS) Drink 2015-2019
