Most people know Sonoma County as Wine Country— and that’s absolutely correct. Yet, the region is so much more than that. This is a place to de-stress, let go, connect, gather and explore. Here are just some of the reasons Sonoma County is the ultimate destination for meetings, conferences and events.
Each year, millions of visitors from around the world are drawn to Sonoma County. Along with hundreds of legendary wineries and acres of lush vineyards, this vast and diverse region features a stunning array of landscapes covering more than 1,700 square miles—from windswept coastal ridges to ocean beaches to majestic redwood forests. Do our travel-savvy visitors come for the incredible wines? Sonoma’s rich history? The charming Wine Country towns and iconic cuisine? Yes, yes and yes. For all these reasons and more, attendees will remember their Sonoma County experience long after the meeting ends.
County’s southern boundary is set just 30 miles north of San Francisco, across the Golden Gate Bridge. That means it’s only a short drive from major travel hubs including San Francisco International Airport and Oakland’s airport. The region even has its own hassle-free airport—Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa—with direct flights and connections on national carriers to major cities around the country.
3. CALIFORNIA SUNSHINE The weather is mild all year long. Even in the winter, daytime highs rarely dip below 50 degrees Fahrenheit in Sonoma County. Attendees will relish the opportunity to get outside and enjoy some of that famous California sunshine between meetings and during outdoor events.
4. A VIBRANT FOOD AND WINE SCENE Ready to refuel and connect after a long day of conference sessions and meetings? Well, that’s convenient, because Sonoma County happens to be one of California’s top wine and food destinations. Home to 425 world-class wineries, this is one of California’s oldest and most historic wine regions. To pair with all that delicious wine, Sonoma County has also cultivated a vibrant and diverse restaurant scene that ranges from funky food trucks and hole-in-the-wall taquerias to Michelin-starred dining destinations.
5. UNIQUE OFFSITE VENUES In Sonoma County, we do meetings differently. Wineries and other distinctive offsite venues throughout the county welcome groups with unique, only-in-Sonoma spaces for conferences, receptions and team bonding. Accommodating everything from intimate gatherings to large meetings, our venues feature amenities like outdoor pizza ovens, bocce courts, in-house chefs, vineyard tours and wine tastings.
6. HOTELS WITH PERSONALITY From national hotel brands you know and trust to distinctive boutiques, inns and resorts, Sonoma County has accommodations of all sizes and styles to fit your company vibe. The region features thousands of hotel rooms at a wide range of properties with on-site meeting space—including many with spas and inspiring views of the region’s world-famous vineyards, redwoods and coastline. Book a hotel in one of Sonoma County’s oh-so-walkable Wine Country towns, and attendees can enjoy a traffic-free respite from the daily grind.
7. TRAVEL PUBLICATIONS LOVE SONOMA COUNTY Sonoma County has earned an avalanche of accolades in recent years as a top travel destination. USA Today named Healdsburg among the Best Small Towns in the West, placing it in the top three. Condé Nast Traveler called out Alexander Valley as one of the Best Places to Go in North America and the Caribbean. CNN Travel named the historic town of Petaluma among America’s Best Towns to Visit in 2025.
In Sonoma County, all seasons are good seasons. The region’s Mediterranean climate means the weather is moderate all year long, so whether you’re planning a meeting for spring, summer, winter or fall, each season has its own set of charms and benefits.
SPRING Spring is a magical time in Sonoma County as the region’s vineyards, gardens and emerald hillsides burst into life. The season typically starts on the cooler side and gradually warms up as it progresses, with high temperatures increasing from the low 60s in early March to around 77 degrees Fahrenheit by late May.
Wildflowers Burst into Bloom
Spring brings a dazzling array of wildflowers to Sonoma County. The colorful display begins in February with bright yellow mustard flowers that carpet the hillsides and valleys, and the show continues with orange poppies, blue irises, purple lupine, snowy milkmaids, yellow buttercups, wild roses and more.
Visitors can spot blooms wherever they go, but spring wildflowers are especially prolific along the trails of Stillwater Cove Regional Park in Jenner, Taylor Mountain Regional Park in Santa Rosa and Helen Putnam Regional Park in Petaluma.
Vineyards Spring into Life
Spring is one of the best times to book vineyard tours because the season shows off Sonoma County at its bucolic best. The vineyards awaken after their winter dormancy, vibrant green leaves appear on the vines and the first buds of the season host tiny flower clusters on young vine shoots.
Vineyards literally buzz with activity as resident bees pollinate cover crops between the vine rows and crews of sheep wander the vineyards munching unwanted greenery in their role as “woolly weeders.”
Outdoor Festivals Kick Off
Sonoma County adores any reason to get outside, and opportunities are plentiful thanks to a host of spring festivals.
In April, tour vineyards and wineries during the Passport to Dry Creek Valley weekend in Healdsburg or plan a group outing to the Apple Blossom Festival & Parade in Sebastopol. In May, Bodega Bay’s annual Fisherman’s Festival celebrates fresh seafood.
SUMMER Summer is Sonoma County’s buzziest season. Grape clusters hang from the vines and begin to change color, and outdoor events and activities move into high gear. Average high temperatures range from the upper 70s into the 90s, with coastal regions seeing cooler and sometimes foggy conditions. Thanks to Sonoma County’s many microclimates, there’s a summer weather vibe for every mood and occasion.
Outdoor Activities are the Norm Summer is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy all the natural beauty and fun activities Sonoma County has to offer.
Arrange a group hike in the redwoods at Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve in Guerneville, pedal Wine Country back roads on a guided bicycle tour or Russian River Rail Bikes adventure, get an aerial view of the vineyards in a breathtaking hot air balloon ride, or explore the rugged cliffs and stunning beaches of the Sonoma Coast.
Al Fresco Events are Everywhere
With warm weather and very little chance of rain, summer is when festival season kicks into high gear. In June, Taste of Sonoma in Santa Rosa brings together hundreds of local wineries and food purveyors for a day of summer revelry, while NASCAR fans turn out for the Toyota Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.
Music lovers flock to the Country Summer Music Festival in Santa Rosa and the Healdsburg Jazz Festival. All summer long, Wine Country towns such as Windsor, Sonoma and Healdsburg host free live music performances in their leafy downtown plazas.
Summer Produce is at its Peak
Sonoma County is home to plethora of small farms, and local chefs take full advantage of the season’s bounty during the peak summer season. From heirloom tomatoes to peaches, “Sonoma-grown” is the buzz on menus across the county.
Many of the region’s small farms are open to the public for you-pick experiences, tours and farmstand shopping excursions. Bees N Blooms in Santa Rosa features a fragrant lavender maze and nature walks, while Petaluma’s Rusty Hinges Ranch hosts a farm market and community yoga days.
FALL It’s easy to fall in love with Sonoma County in the autumn season: It’s time for the annual harvest, the afternoon light has a glint of magic, and the region is alive with only-in-Wine-Country experiences. As fog recedes, warm temperatures typically extend into early fall, followed by gradual cooling. Average highs start out in the 80s in September and eventually dip into the 60s by November.
For Sonoma County grape growers and farmers, harvest is the vibrant culmination of a year’s work—a time to pick and celebrate the fruits of their labors. During this special time, local wineries host harvest tours and tastings, competitive grape stomps, parties and immersive vineyard experiences.
The Sonoma County Wine Celebration in September features star chefs and incredible auction lots, while the Valley of the Moon Vintage Festival, founded in 1897, brings together Sonoma County’s wine community for tastings and events across the region. October’s Sonoma County Harvest Fair in Santa Rosa features a tasting tent devoted to award-winning local wines, plus competitions and chef demonstrations.
Fall Colors, Sonoma Style
In Sonoma County, we have our own kind of leap peeping. As summer gives way to autumn, luminous fall colors transform the vineyards from a vibrant green to a symphony of oranges, reds, yellows and golds. The region’s beautiful regional and state parks are positively aglow in color and light, making any autumn hike memorable.
WINTER Winter is when Sonoma County receives most of its annual rainfall, yet temperatures are moderate throughout the season. In January, the average inland high is a comfortable 58 degrees Fahrenheit, and there’s lots to see and do across the region—both indoors and outside.
Hotels Offer Discounts and Deals
Winter is a great time of year to take advantage of low-season hotel rates and special discounts. Accommodations of all sizes offer substantial discounts in the winter months, with many offering 25 percent or more off their high-season prices.
The Pace is Slower
Winter is the most laid-back season in Sonoma County. With fewer visitors in town, the crowds are smaller and the pace is relaxed. Vineyards are dormant for the season and wines are resting in their barrels and tanks, so attendees are more likely to meet winemakers and winery owners during offsite excursions to local tasting rooms. Winter is also the best time to score bookings at Sonoma’s most sought-after restaurants.
It’s Cozy Season
When there’s a chill in the air, Sonoma County’s restaurants and wineries love to get cozy. At Benovia Winery in Santa Rosa, attendees can sip Chardonnay and Pinot Noir perched in curved leather
armchairs next to the ceiling-high hearth. Ram’s Gate Winery in Sonoma has a mountain lodge feel, and the winery offers multiple spaces for private tastings warmed by a roaring fireplace.
There’s nothing like a crackling fireplace to take a stellar meal or happy hour to the next level. Drake’s Fireside Lounge in Bodega Bay boasts a large stone fireplace framed by views of the Pacific Ocean, and outdoor firepits provide a cozy spot for post-meeting drinks. The Front Room Bar and Lounge at John Ash restaurant has a decidedly clubby vibe with leather armchairs, a toasty fireplace and dark wood accents.
While other regions hunker down for the winter, Sonoma County is always ready to show visitors a good time at some of the region’s most exciting food and wine festivals and events.
In January, tour northern Sonoma County and meet local winemakers during Winter Wineland, or plan a coastal Bodega Bay excursion for your group on Chowder Day.
February is time for Sonoma County Restaurant Week, a chance to indulge in specially priced multicourse menus. As the holiday season approaches, Wine Country towns twinkle with festive lights— especially at the annual Lighting of the Sonoma Plaza in November.
You’ve got questions? We have answers.
What’s the best way to get to Sonoma County from the airport? Renting a car is a great option for exploring Sonoma County, but there are other convenient forms of transportation that make airport transfers easy for business travelers. Shuttle services operate between Sonoma County and the San Francisco and Oakland airports, with drop-off locations in Petaluma, Rohnert Park and Santa Rosa. Those flying into Charles M. Schulz Sonoma
County Airport (STS) in Santa Rosa can take the Smart Train passenger rail service directly to destinations in Windsor, Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, Cotati and Petaluma.
What kind of weather should attendees dress for? Sonoma County’s moderate temperatures seldom dip below freezing, even in the winter. The area’s 25- to 30-inch annual rainfall happens primarily from November through
April. Temperatures can vary widely between inland and coastal locations. In January, for example, the average inland high is 58 degrees Fahrenheit and the coastal average runs a few degrees cooler. In July, the average inland high is 90 degrees, and the coastal average is 80—though temperatures may be as low as the mid- to high 60s. Travelers should dress in layers, since a chilly and foggy summer morning may heat up to the 80s by early afternoon.
How big is Sonoma County? The region has a decidedly small-town feel, yet its geography is vast. In fact, it’s larger than Rhode Island. Sonoma County covers more than 1,700 square miles and includes 55 miles of coastline. From the Pacific Ocean to the redwoods to the mountains and valleys of Wine Country, there’s lots of terrain for attendees to discover. At the same time, Sonoma County’s walkable small towns make it possible for attendees to conveniently stroll between hotels, meeting venues, winery tasting rooms, restaurants, craft breweries and shops. With so much to see and do, many business travelers choose to “bookend” their trips with an extra day or two at each end.
Are there things to do for people who don’t drink wine or alcohol? Of course! Nestled amid Sonoma County’s legendary wineries and vineyards are endless opportunities for memorable experiences between meetings. That’s so
From redwood hikes to coastal culinary adventures, explore the unforgettable activities that define Sonoma’s spirit and showcase the best of California’s Wine Country.
1. Winery Hopping Spending a day among the vines is a quintessential Sonoma experience. With hundreds of wineries set across the region’s sun-dappled valleys and rolling hills, there’s a rich tapestry of landscapes and grape varieties to explore. Winery hopping is about so much more than sampling celebrated wines—it’s a chance to connect with the land, the people, and the traditions that define Sonoma Wine Country.
2. Walking With the Giants Sonoma County is home to some of the tallest and oldest trees on the planet: coast redwoods. Strolling in the shadow of these towering beauties is nothing less than awe-inspiring. Ancient groves in Guerneville, Occidental and along the Sonoma Coast provide a peaceful, meditative escape and a chance to feel at one with nature.
3. Cooking Classes + Wine Blending
Food and wine are in Sonoma County’s DNA, and there are plenty of opportunities to get in on the creative process. Culinary classes and wine blending workshops help groups channel their inner chefs and winemakers.
4. Getting out on the River Paddling along the Russian River in kayaks, canoes or paddleboards is Sonoma County’s idea of a summer commute—or a great day of team building. Group rentals are available from many local outfits.
5. Driving the Sonoma Coast Few drives compare to the Pacific Coast Highway 1 as it winds its way along the bluffs of the Sonoma Coast. It’s a yearround escape filled with dramatic ocean views, fresh air, and a chance to stop and savor the freshest seafood. Pack a beach picnic, skip stones, or simply watch the waves crash against rocky coves. The drive captures Sonoma County’s wild, untamed side.
6. Toasting Sunsets Over the Vines There’s something truly magical about watching the setting sun cast golden light over the vineyards, bathing the rows in warmth and color. A winery terrace or deck is the best place to watch the show—a perfect way to toast the end of another memorable day in Sonoma County.
Sonoma County is best known for its wine, but it’s far from a monoculture. Rolling vineyards share the landscape with orchards, olive groves, hop yards and dairies, and the region’s artisan products are loved by chefs and epicures the world over.
The best way to experience Sonoma County’s signature offerings is at the source, so don’t miss the opportunity to treat attendees to the iconic tastes of the region for a more meaningful and memorable experience.
WORLD-FAMOUS WINES Sonoma County is one of California’s oldest wine regions—settlers planted the first vines here in the early 1800s—and after more than two centuries, it’s still setting the standard. Though Sonoma County is considered by many wine experts to be California’s best spot for cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the county’s size and diversity make it a hospitable home for dozens of grape varieties, from Albariño to Zinfandel.
CHENEL ORIGINAL CHÈVRE Sonoma farm country is dotted with grazing sheep, goats and cows, so it’s hardly surprising that the region produces an incredible array of artisan cheeses. In Petaluma, Cowgirl Creamery’s famed Mt Tam, a rich, triple-cream cheese with a bloomy rind, has earned accolades from Food & Wine and Bon Appétit magazines. In Sonoma, Laura Chenel Original Chèvre helped launch the American goat cheese revolution with its fresh, tangy flavor. Follow the Sonoma County Cheese Trail for more treasures.
PLINY THE YOUNGER & LAGUNITAS IPAs Sonoma County is home to not one, but two world-famous IPAs. Russian River Brewing’s Pliny the Younger—a triple IPA and cousin to Pliny the Elder—draws beer lovers from around the globe every spring for its two-week limited release. Nearby, Lagunitas Brewing Co. helped define West Coast IPA with its exemplary original brew. Freshness is key when it comes to craft beer, so there’s no better place to sample these trend-setting IPAs.
BODEGA BAY OYSTERS Briny, fresh and unmistakably local— Sonoma County’s oysters are a coastal treasure. You’ll find these delicacies on restaurant menus throughout the region, sourced from Bodega Bay as well as nearby Tomales Bay. Locals eat them on the half shell with a squeeze of lemon and a mignonette drizzle, or barbecued and adorned with savory sauces.
GRAVENSTEIN APPLES In the early 1900s, West Sonoma County was known as “apple country” thanks to Russian settlers who planted prolific heirloom Gra-
venstein orchards. Yellow-green with red stripes, Sonoma County’s signature sweet-tart apple begins appearing at fruit stands and farmers markets in late July. Locals love “Gravs,” as they’re affectionately known, in pies, ciders and more. Every August, fans celebrate the fruit at the Gravenstein Apple Fair in Sebastopol.
DUNGENESS CRAB Beloved for their sweet, delicate meat, Dungeness crabs are a staple on Sonoma County restaurant menus, family dinner tables, and all-you-can-eat crab feeds during their peak season—which typically runs from early winter through late spring. These large crustaceans were first harvested commercially from Bodega Bay in the mid-1800s, and folks have been savoring them ever since— steamed, boiled and roasted.
LIBERTY DUCK Chefs at Michelin-starrred restaurants both locally and across the country swear by Sonoma County Poultry’s Liberty Duck. These special Pekin ducks, raised in Petaluma by fourth-generation poultry farmer Jim Reichardt and his family, are meatier and more fla-
vorful than your average quacker. The farm’s slow rearing methods allow the ducks to develop a distinctive layer of fat that enhances flavor, moisture and texture.
OLIVE OIL Olive trees have deep roots in Sonoma County. Spanish missionaries planted the region’s first olive trees in 1823, recognizing that the region’s warm, dry summers were ideal for cultivating multiple Mediterranean varieties. Today, olives are Sonoma County’s second-largest crop after wine, and the region is renowned for its exceptional extra virgin olive oils. Olive oil tasting rooms dot the county, and many wineries produce their own estate bottlings for guests to sample.
Sonoma-Centric
Teams can craft their very own wine blends through winemakerfor-a-day sessions at venues such as Meadowcroft Wines in Sonoma. After learning about the process that master winemakers use to blend wines from different grape varieties and vineyards, participants experiment with barrel samples and create their own take-home masterpieces.
There’s nothing like the thrill of soaring through the treetops to create unforgettable bonding moments between colleagues and team members. Set amid Occidental’s towering redwood forest, Sonoma Zipline Adventures offers a variety of tours, including night flights. The outfit also hosts and caters company meetings.
TEE UP Golf courses are the ideal place to network and relax, and in Sonoma County, breathtaking landscapes are par for the course at a dozen destinations across the region. Attendees can practice their swing in the idyllic foothills

One of the state’s oldest wineries, Buena Vista—founded in Sonoma Valley by Hungarian nobleman Agoston Haraszthy in 1857—is still in operation today.
