EACH

YEAR, SON OF A SAINT SELECTS A GROUP OF BOYS STARTING AT AGE 10 TO ENTER OUR PROGRAM, AND THE CONNECTION REMAINS INTO THEIR EARLY ADULTHOOD.

These young men are fatherless due to their father’s death, incarceration, deportation or single motherhood, and are often boys in crisis.

Son of a Saint employs a holistic approach, using a network of volunteers and partner agencies that enable us to address every boy’s individual needs. Each boy remains an official mentee until he is 21, but the connections remain, and we continue to advise and support him in the years of young adulthood that follow.

Our goal is to graduate self-sufficient, independent thinkers who are leaders and who give back to their community.

17 SON OF A SAINT
2023 was defined by strategic growth, inspiring achievement, and unparalleled involvement and support from across our community.

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As Son of a Saint Board Chairman, I’d like to take a moment to share my gratitude for the incredible supporters, staff, mentors, families, and fellow Board members who helped make 2023 another transformative year for Son of a Saint.

For Son of a Saint, 2023 was defined by strategic growth, inspiring achievement, and unparalleled involvement and support from across our community. I’m proud to share that, in 2023, Son of a Saint reached its highest enrollment to date – accepting 44 new mentees to our program, and bringing our total impact to nearly 350 young men annually. For our newest cohort, Son of a Saint received over 100 applications; the highest number of applicants for a single cohort in Son of a Saint’s 12-year history. This interest underscores both the urgent need for Son of a Saint’s services, but also the level of trust our dedicated team has successfully cultivated within the New Orleans community through intentional outreach, strong strategic partnerships, and clear and consistent communication of our impact.

In 2023, Son of a Saint also graduated a new class of mentees, all of whom are embarking on impactful trajectories including college, joining the workforce, or serving in the military. Our graduates have demonstrated remarkable growth, resilience, and determination throughout their journey with Son of a Saint. Their achievements stand as a testament to the transformative power of mentorship in shaping the future leaders of our society. We are immensely proud of every one of them and look forward to witnessing their continued success as they embark on new chapters in their lives, and pay forward the mentorship they’ve received.

Our excitement about these remarkable programmatic achievements was bookended by a record-setting 2023 Annual Gala, which exceeded all expectations in terms of attendance, funds raised, and community engagement. The overwhelming support and enthusiasm from our sponsors, donors, and attendees raised the event to unparalleled heights, reaffirming the significance of our mission and the value the Son of a Saint program brings to the community. Transformational on-stage funding commitments from our valued partners at Ochsner Health and Latter & Blum positioned Son of a Saint to enter 2024 with financial strength, ready to respond to, and meet, the needs of our expanding mentee community. As we look ahead to the coming year, we envision even greater possibilities.

The road that lies ahead points us toward long-term sustainability and consistency for the mentees we serve. Our goals include deepening our programs; expanding our impact through community-centered initiatives including Son of a Saint Scholars and Son of a Saint & Friends; and investing in long-term sustainability through an ambitious endowment campaign.

Thank you for being an integral part of our journey. Together, we are transforming lives and building a future filled with promise.

With gratitude,

ANNUAL GALA

Mentees happily hit the red carpet during a memorable night of support and celebration.

2023 ANNUAL REPORT 20
21 SON OF A SAINT
Our most successful Gala to date took place on November 17th, raising over $3 million and hosting more than 540 guests.

As the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Son of a Saint, I am pleased to present an update on our financial status and operational achievements over the past year.

I’d like to first thank each one of you for your consistent support and generosity which has continued to significantly impact the lives of young men in need within our community. The contributions you have made have been instrumental in helping us achieve our mission and positively influence the lives of our mentees.

Looking back at the purchase of our headquarters building in March 2020 during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were initial uncertainties surrounding our decision. However, it is gratifying to see the significant impact the building has had on the community in a relatively short period. Following the building acquisition, renovations commenced in July 2021, and we successfully transitioned to the new space in July 2022. I am proud to share that we have completely paid off the building as of December 31, 2023 and another smaller property that was acquired over a year ago for expansion purposes.

December 2023 marked a milestone as we welcomed our largest cohort yet, consisting of 44 mentees. Our community outreach programs and volunteer initiatives, including co- hosting the Tyrann Mathieu Foundation Holiday Dinner and participating in the Allstate AFCA Good Works Event, continue to thrive, offering enriching experiences for our mentees and fostering their growth.

Our website has been upgraded to showcase the spirit and mission of the Son of a Saint & Friends initiative, along with other exciting, real-time updates. We have also expanded our educational partnerships through Son of a Saint Scholars, collaborating with a total of 28 partner schools and working towards enhancing support for our mentees.

The dedication of our volunteers is invaluable; in the fiscal year ending on December 31, 2023, they collectively contributed approximately 3,100 hours, equivalent to a value exceeding $73,000, marking a 40% increase from the previous year.

In 2023, our total revenue reached approximately $8.3 million, a $2 million increase from the previous year, while total expenses amounted to $5.3 million. This led to a net operating income of almost $3 million compared to $1 million from the previous year. About 70.69% of our total expenses were allocated to Program expenses, 7.68% to General and Administrative expenses, and 21.63% to Fundraising, demonstrating a well-balanced allocation strategy.

Our most successful Gala took place on November 17th, raising over $3 million and hosting 540 guests. The proceeds surpassed our revenue targets for 2023.

Through diligent expense management and implementation of robust accounting practices, we successfully saved over $531,000, while keeping our unrestricted expenses under $4 million. Additionally, the introduction of a credit card software platform aims at streamlining our financial processes for enhanced efficiency and scalability.

With a strong balance sheet free from major long-term debts, we are strategically positioned to establish an endowment fund for long-term sustainability.

Thank you for being a part of Son of a Saint and for your steadfast commitment to our cause. I am looking forward to our continued partnership in creating a positive impact in the lives of others.

Warm regards,

The 2023 Annual Gala, shattered records and illuminated the power of community support.

In a night filled with celebration, excitement, and unwavering generosity, Son of a Saint’s premier signature event, The 2023 Annual Gala, shattered records and illuminated the power of community support. The 2023 event marked the tenth anniversary of the milestone fundraiser and party with a purpose in Son of a Saint’s history.

At the heart of this monumental event stood two pillars of corporate philanthropy: Ochsner Health and Latter & Blum. Their steadfast commitment not only as presenting sponsors but also as benefactors of a remarkable $1 million gift each, symbolized a profound dedication to the mission of Son of a Saint and its mission to empower youth in our community. Without question, the occasion showcased not only the organization’s growth but also the unwavering support

Son of a Saint has garnered from esteemed leaders in the community.

Among these leaders, Latter & Blum Founder and Chairman Robert “Bob” Merrick and Ochsner Health CEO Pete November, stand out as champions of Son of a Saint’s vision. Their generous contributions and unwavering advocacy have played a pivotal role in the organization’s sustained success, providing the necessary resources to expand the organization’s reach and impact.

“The Son of a Saint Gala was exceptional and I would like to congratulate the wonderful staff, volunteers, and planning committee members that were responsible for putting the event together. The incredible turnout of nearly 600 people was a great indication that the citizens of New Orleans recognize the importance and impact of the Son of a Saint’s mission and programs,” Merrick remarked. “The transformational fundraising that night will empower Son of a Saint to fulfill its deepest purpose– to literally save more young men. My wife Sheryl and I don’t view our gift as a donation but rather as an investment in the futures of over 350 young men, and, in turn, a critical and necessary investment in the future of our city.”

NICOLE DUNBAR

Mom of mentees Zander and Kyzer

Over the past nine years, my family has had the pleasure of being a part of Son of a Saint. From the onset of our relationship, my sons Zander and Kyzer, and I, have felt comfort in our interactions with Mr. Sonny and the Son of a Saint staff.

Zander, now 19, is a successful Son of a Saint alumnus and a sophomore at Tulane University studying Political Science. He’s doing exceptionally well both academically and socially. I am proud of Zander’s accomplishments as he progresses through college and life. Kyzer at 16 is a Son of a Saint mentee and a junior at St. Augustine High School, thriving and reaching for success in academics and socially. He’s grown by leaps and bounds, both as a student and an elite track-andfield athlete.

When I think about Zander and Kyzer’s growth and success, I recognize how Son of a Saint made significant contributions to their accomplishments and to our lives. This certainly includes the life of my 75-year-old mother, Verga Fortenberry, who is a transportation driver for the organization. Her life is filled with joy every opportunity she gets to interact with the mentees and staff.

As a single mother left to raise my two sons after the tragic loss of their father, I was not sure of what the future would hold for my family. However, that changed after watching an interview on the news featuring Mr. Sonny sharing his personal story and vision for helping fatherless boys. The trajectory for both of my sons’ lives is much clearer now. My family and I are truly grateful for all the beautiful memories we’ve shared and the creation of these lifelong relationships.

JEROMY PORTER

2023 Mentor of the Year

Joining Son of a Saint has been such a rewarding experience. From volunteering to mentoring, I’ve been able to gain fulfillment in each interaction that I’ve had with the boys. I’ve had an opportunity to introduce my mentees to fishing and they love it. The outdoors has grown on them just like it did for me when I was their age. Growing up in New Orleans, I understand how important it is to share these healthy outlets with mentees.

I’ve learned that mentoring isn’t always about giving the best advice or sharing every bit of knowledge. Sometimes you just need to be present and have an ear to listen. I really enjoy supporting my mentees at their games and being there when they want to talk. It’s amazing how much a mentor’s presence can affect a young man throughout his life.

Son of a Saint has truly gratified mentorship, giving mentors an enriching way to spend their time. I would urge anyone interested in making a change in their community to join this organization and help equip our boys with tools they need to become productive men.

JASON MERCADEL

2023 Mentee of the Year

My experience in Son of a Saint has been amazing. When I first joined the program I wasn’t really intrigued with participating. But as the program began to open doors for me, and my family started consistently encouraging me to be active, I’ve grown to love it. Son of a Saint has supported me in many ways, giving me a second family and a group of people I can depend on. Whether it’s through attending different events, joining the AAU Basketball team, or just connecting with everyone, this has been a significant part of my life.

I am so thankful for the brotherhood and the mentorship that Son of a Saint gives to me. I have been a part of so many memorable activities, like going to Top Golf, joining community service events, and especially traveling to Ghana, Africa and learning more about life there. This program is a big part of why I’m the young man I am today. Being named Son of a Saint’s 2023 Mentee of the Year was a big honor, and I will continue to be a great mentee and make everyone proud. I want help pave the way for the young mentees behind me and show them how to grow and be the best they can be.

From the very first interaction with Son of a Saint, the organization has brought our family so much support, love, and healing. We have received just as much as we’ve given to Son of a Saint.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Son of a Saint has created a community of volunteers to aid in communicating the needs of the organization to external supporters, as well as to maintain and develop the spirit of service in every aspect of our growth.

OUTREACH + EVENT VOLUNTEER

Assist with event setup, guest registration and communication, as well as cleanup service. Outreach + Event Volunteers may also choose to be involved in event planning. Events and activities include attending fairs and community events, tabling booths, networking meetings and more.

TRANSPORTATION VOLUNTEER

Provide local transportation for our mentees to and from Son of a Saint events, school, home, games, programs and various engagements. Transportation Volunteers must provide a valid driver’s license, car insurance, and have a clean driving record. Requirements also include consistent access to a reliable vehicle that can comfortably transport up to three mentees.

EDUCATION VOLUNTEER

Provide mentees with individualized tutoring assistance for schoolwork and completing assignments. Duties include following lesson plans, reviewing textbooks, co-managing additional projects, and answering a mentees’ questions about specific educational topics.

FUNDRAISING/ DEVELOPMENT VOLUNTEER

Work with the Son of a Saint Development team to establish and execute specific fundraising strategies. These volunteers help solicit in-kind or monetary contributions and sponsorships from individuals, local businesses, and partner organizations. They will also assist in event coordination and large-scale fundraiser activation, including the Son of a Saint Annual Gala.

ACTIVITY/PROJECT VOLUNTEER

Organize and lead a range of Son of a Saint-related activities, and act as a liaison with programming staff and external partners, to help recruit and support new volunteers, and to ensure that activities are effective, safe, and enjoyable for those participating.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A MENTOR

We seek individuals who are professional, able to commit their time, in good legal and social standing, and who also have the ability to exercise cultural competence.

Listed below are the various mentorship opportunities

Son of a Saint offers:

ONE-ON-ONE MENTORSHIP

Engages one mentee and one mentor; there is an organic pairing process to support this model.

TEAM/GROUP MENTORSHIP

Engages any ratio of mentees to mentors; it helps mentors and mentees form group relationships.

ACADEMIC MENTORSHIP

Support for success in school; they serve as a tutor, study buddy, or accountability partner.

CAREER MENTORSHIP

Supports career development programming; they serve as an employer, career coach, or job shadowing/internship site coordinator.

ACTIVITIES MENTORSHIP/CLUB ADVISORS

Creates a small community of mentees that connect over a planned event or common interest; they lead projects and events to foster robust programming.

STAFF MENTORSHIP

Supported by a Son of a Saint staff member through roles and responsibilities.
