A LETTER FROM THE CEO
Looking back on the past year, I am once again struck by an overwhelming sense of pride and gratitude for the extraordinary progress we’ve made together as a Son of a Saint community. The journey has been nothing short of remarkable, and it is a privilege to share with you the highlights of our year—the milestones we reached, the lives we touched, and the impact we continue to build upon.
IN 2024, SON OF A SAINT EXPERIENCED NOTABLE GROWTH.
Reaching new milestones in our mission to empower our young men through the pillars of our program: mentorship, education, and support. Our strategic growth has enabled us to enhance our ability to serve more young men than ever before since our founding in 2011. For the first time in our history, we are proud to serve more than 500 youth across the Greater New Orleans region.
In 2024, we made critical hires, forged new partnerships, hosted all-new experiences for engagement and interactivity throughout our expanding network, and we also introduced unprecedented programming opportunities to our mentees. From arts and creative expression to culinary exploration and educational enrichment, we have broadened our holistic approach to youth development, ensuring that every young man in our family has the tools, experiences, and support to thrive. The results of these collective efforts reinforce our motivation to assume a mantle role as a national model for successful youth development.
This progress would not be possible without the unwavering dedication of our donors, mentors, staff, volunteers, and community members. Your support— whether through time, talent, treasure, creative resources, or a combination of all these things— continues to be the driving force behind our ability to transform lives. Your investment in our mission is an investment in the future of New Orleans.
Son of a Saint stands at an exciting juncture, poised for even greater impact. With every step forward, we reaffirm our commitment to providing fatherless young men with the mentorship, guidance, and critical resources they need to shape bright, successful futures. Thank you for being an integral part of this journey. The best is yet to come.
With gratitude,
BIVIAN “SONNY” LEE III Founder + CEO, Son of a Saint
EACH YEAR, SON OF A SAINT SELECTS A GROUP OF BOYS, STARTING AT AGE 10, TO ENTER OUR PROGRAM.
The connection remains until early adulthood. These young men are fatherless due to their father’s death, incarceration, deportation, or single motherhood, and are often boys in crisis.
Son of a Saint employs a holistic approach, using a network of volunteers and partner agencies that enable us to address every boy’s individual needs. Each boy remains an official mentee until he is 21, but the connections remain as the Son of a Saint team continues to advise and support the young men in the years of young adulthood that follow.
Our goal is to graduate self-sufficient, independent thinkers who are leaders and who give back to their community.

Dear Friends and Supporters,
As Son of a Saint reflects on another noteworthy year of impact, service, and success, it is with immense pride and gratitude that I share the remarkable accomplishments our organization has achieved throughout 2024. Thanks to the unwavering support and dedication of our mentors, staff, and Board of Directors, Son of a Saint has not only continued, but also expanded, our impact on the lives of the mentees and families we serve.
Throughout 2024, Son of a Saint successfully increased the number of mentees we serve by nearly 25%, welcoming 45 new mentees into our program at the end of the year.
By expanding our transportation programs and critical community engagement efforts, we’ve been able to reach and serve young men in new neighborhoods, schools, and communities who may not have had access to critical support and mentorship otherwise. In 2024, Son of a Saint also invested in an intentional expansion of our services for alumni, hiring our first full-time staff member dedicated to supporting our graduates as they proceed on postsecondary education and employment trajectories. Through communityfocused initiatives like Son of a Saint & Friends and Son of a Saint Scholars, we have also continued to provide invaluable resources like scholarships, basic necessities, and recreation opportunities to hundreds of local youth and families.
As we celebrate the milestone achievements of the past year, we’re also reminded of the crucial role that the generosity of our community plays in our success. For Son of a Saint, our community has always been New Orleans and beyond, including our network of champions, advocates, and supporters across the country. In addition, our alumni are going to college, launching careers, starting families, and giving back to communities throughout the United States, and their reach only continues to grow as they step into their bold futures.
2024 ALSO MARKS THE CULMINATION OF MY SERVICE AS BOARD CHAIRMAN, A POST I HAVE PROUDLY HELD SINCE 2022.
As I reflect on my term, I am deeply proud of the myriad accomplishments that Son of a Saint has achieved, including more than doubling our mentee enrollment; tripling our professional staff; opening our permanent headquarters in the heart of MidCity; growing and formalizing our wraparound services; establishing a transformational partnership with Ochsner Health; and reaching new pinnacles of fundraising and storytelling success beyond our wildest expectations.
Collectively, our efforts have advanced the mission and secured the legacy of Son of a Saint into the future. None of this would have been possible without the incredible support of our donors, volunteers, and partners.
Perhaps the most fulfilling aspect of my tenure has been having a front-row seat to the countless successes of our mentees. Whether it’s a mentee receiving his first college acceptance letter, a guardian who has benefited from individual counseling, or a mentee overcoming personal challenges, these stories remind us why the Son of a Saint program matters.
Looking ahead to 2025, I am excited about the future of Son of a Saint and the many new opportunities that await. We remain committed to expanding our impact, strengthening our programs, and empowering more young men to achieve their dreams.
On behalf of the entire board and staff, I thank you for your continued support and for being part of this lifechanging work. Together, we are making a difference, one young person at a time.
With gratitude,
BILL HINES Board Chairman, Son of a Saint

Dear Friends and Supporters,
I’m excited to provide you with an update on our operational achievements and financial status from the past year in my role as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Son of a Saint.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported our growth during the past year. Thank you for your unwavering support and generosity. Your contributions have made a profound impact on the lives of young men in need within our community, enabling us to fulfill our mission and positively influence our mentees.
With the support of our entire team, we welcomed a new cohort of 45 mentees. Several staff members greeted the new families with welcome boxes and words of encouragement, an experience that I thoroughly enjoyed participating in.
In 2024, our total revenue (restricted and unrestricted) reached approximately $14.3 million, reflecting a $6 million increase from the prior year, while total expenses amounted to $6.7 million. This is a testament to the dedication of our Development and Fundraising team. Of our total expenses, 71% was allocated to program expenses, 7% to general and administrative expenses, and 22% to fundraising, demonstrating a well-balanced allocation strategy.
Our Gala on November 22nd was another successful event, raising close to $2 million and welcoming nearly 600 guests. Impressively, we surpassed our sponsorship revenue targets for 2024 compared to those set in 2023. Kudos to our entire Son of a Saint team for another amazing gala.
I am also very grateful for our volunteers who play a crucial role at Son of a Saint, contributing their time, skills and energy to support various initiatives, projects and activities. During the fiscal year ending December 31, 2024, they collectively contributed approximately 8,521 hours, translating to a value exceeding $241,000 -- a remarkable 242% increase from the previous year.
Here are some key highlights from the year:
Operational Efficiency: In the past year, Son of a Saint achieved remarkable operational efficiency through a series of strategic initiatives aimed at streamlining processes and enhancing resource allocation. By implementing a robust data management system, Salesforce, the organization improved its tracking of participant progress and resource utilization, allowing for better decision-making and targeted support.
Staff training programs focused on best practices in nonprofit management fostered a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration. Additionally, we leveraged technology to automate administrative tasks, freeing up valuable time for staff to engage more directly with the youth we serve. These efforts not only optimized operations but also enhanced the overall impact of Son of a Saint’s programs, enabling us to reach more youth and provide them with essential mentorship and resources.
Cash Flow Management: By focusing on effective systems, we have strengthened our balance sheet, ensuring we maintain a healthy liquidity position to navigate any uncertainties that may arise.
Looking ahead, we remain focused on expanding our reach in the community, optimizing our operations, and investing in top talent. I am confident that, with your continued support, we will build upon our successes, and I am excited about what we can achieve together in 2025.
Thank you for being a part of our journey at Son of a Saint! Your dedication and belief in our vision are crucial to our progress, and I am deeply grateful for your commitment to our mission.
With gratitude,
OLA ADEGBOYE Chief Operating Officer/CFO

Homegrown Creativity
THE CULTURAL AND ARTISTIC EVOLUTION OF SON OF A SAINT MENTEES
In the heart of New Orleans, culture is more than a backdrop—it’s a lifeblood, a rhythm, a shared language.
At Son of a Saint, we embrace that essence by immersing our mentees in the rich artistic, culinary, and cultural traditions that make our city extraordinary. We recognize that creative expression is fundamental to personal growth, and our intentional programming is designed to ensure that every mentee feels included, supported, and empowered to explore their identity through the arts, food, and performance.
One of the most impactful partnerships we cultivated this year was with ricRACK, a fellow New Orleans-based nonprofit dedicated to sustainable textile education.
Through hands-on workshops, our mentees learned essential skills such as sewing, cutting, tracing, and measuring while also gaining a deeper understanding of sustainability and waste reduction. These workshops not only provided valuable practical knowledge, but also opened the door for mentees to express their creativity through fashion, design, and upcycling. By incorporating cultural influences and a commitment to re-use, the mentees developed both an appreciation for craftsmanship and a sense of environmental responsibility.
In addition to textile arts, Son of a Saint continued to expand its commitment to visual self-expression through the Son of a Saint Art Club, Photography Club, and Anime Club.
These creative outlets served as sanctuaries for mentees eager to tell their stories through paint, lens, and animation. Our Anime Club, led by Son of a Saint volunteer and local educator Donald Hess, and supported by NFL running back and anime aficionado Jamaal Williams, has become a beloved space where mentees explore their artistic passions while celebrating a genre that blends storytelling with dynamic visuals. Whether capturing the vibrant
landscapes of New Orleans through photography or sketching their own manga-inspired characters, our mentees found confidence and connection in these artistic explorations.
Taking creativity to the stage, 2024 saw the exciting emergence of Son of a Saint’s Comedy Club, led by renowned improv coach and comedy producer Chris Trew.
Through structured workshops, mentees honed their comedic timing, improvisation skills, and stage presence, culminating in two live stand-up showcases. These performances were more than just moments of laughter; they were celebrations of growth, resilience, and the power of storytelling. In stepping up to the mic, our mentees not only entertained but also found new ways to express their emotions, experiences, and perspectives in an authentic and powerful way.
Culture and cuisine are deeply intertwined in New Orleans, and our mentees continued to experience this firsthand through our robust culinary programming.
The CHOP cooking classes provided hands-on education in nutrition and meal preparation, fostering both practical skills and a deeper appreciation for food as a cornerstone of well-being. On-location chef visits and demonstrations, in collaboration with esteemed restaurant groups like Ruby Slipper, Link Restaurant Group, and the Emeril Lagasse Foundation, introduced mentees to professional chefs who shared their culinary journeys and expertise. These experiences reinforced the importance of nutrition education, creativity in the kitchen, and the cultural significance of food in bringing people together.
Through each of these dynamic initiatives, Son of a Saint remains steadfast in its mission to meet our mentees where they are, providing them with the tools, experiences, and encouragement to navigate their journey of self-discovery. Whether through textiles, visual art, performance, or cuisine, we are cultivating a generation of young men who are not only connected to the culture of New Orleans but also inspired to contribute to its ever-evolving story.
Son of a Saint proudly welcomed 275 guests for a first-of-its-kind fundraiser, called “A Night in New York,” inside the world-famous venue, Boom, located atop the iconic Standard High Line Hotel in the Big Apple’s Meatpacking District.
EXPANDING THE SON OF A SAINT LEGACY BEYOND NEW ORLEANS
More than a fundraiser— it was a declaration of Son of a Saint’s growing national presence.
On May 21, 2024, Son of a Saint embarked on a bold new chapter, taking its mission beyond the borders of New Orleans and into one of the world’s most vibrant cities. Hosted at The Standard, High Line in New York City’s iconic Meatpacking District, “A Night in New York” was more than just a fundraiser—it was a declaration of Son of a Saint’s growing national presence and long-term vision.
The event’s tagline, “Our Story is in Every City,” underscored our belief that Son of a Saint’s impact reaches far beyond our Louisiana roots, resonating in communities across the country as the young men of our program evolve into their adult lives, pursue their dreams, and shape their bold futures.
From the rooftop of Boom, a premier event space at The Standard, more than 275 supporters, including philanthropists, business leaders, and public figures from both New Orleans and the tri-state area, gathered to celebrate the Son of a Saint mission.
The energy in the room was palpable, as guests created dynamic new connections, engaged in meaningful conversations, heard heartfelt testimonials, and enjoyed an unforgettable evening filled with New Orleans-inspired entertainment.
The night’s success was made possible by presenting sponsors Stonepeak and Old City Investment Partners.
Together, they helped propel Son of a Saint’s momentum, providing both financial and relational support for our continued growth.
One of the most defining moments of the evening came when Mike Dorrell, Chairman, CEO, and CoFounder of Stonepeak, took the stage to announce an unprecedented $5 million contribution to launch Son of a Saint’s newly formed endowment fund.
MIKE DORRELL
Chairman, CEO, and Co-Founder of Stonepeak
Stonepeak is proud to support Son of a Saint, an incredible organization bringing critical services and opportunities to the community of New Orleans. Sonny and his team continue to build and expand this wonderful network, providing a supportive framework that changes lives profoundly in a positive way. I am honored to play a part in the continued build-out of the organization and its programming, and I am excited for all of the ways the team will no doubt increase the already significant impact in years to come.
AMONG THE NIGHT’S MOST INSPIRING MOMENTS, A KEYNOTE ADDRESS FROM SON OF A SAINT ALUMNUS MILES STEWART, A GRADUATING SENIOR AT THE U.S. MILITARY ACADEMY AT WEST POINT
For Son of a Saint’s team and its leadership, the night was a culmination of years of effort and a testament to the power of relationships. ‘A Night in New York’ served as the unique opportunity to gather our supporters from both near and far to celebrate Son of a Saint’s mission and incredible impact, making a significant difference in the lives of our program’s youth while creating meaningful connections in the New York and tri-state areas, and beyond.
Among the night’s most inspiring moments was a keynote address from Son of a Saint alumnus Miles Stewart. Now a graduating senior at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Stewart reflected on his journey and the role Son of a Saint played in shaping his future. “Son of a Saint introduced me to a future,” he shared. “Many of my friends and I didn’t see past New Orleans and what was immediately in front of us. We didn’t see the opportunities that awaited us in life. However, with Son of a Saint, we were forced to see it.”
Beyond heartfelt speeches and the record-breaking endowment announcement, the evening featured an exciting silent auction showcasing one-of-a-kind items and experiences from notable New Orleans entities, including artwork from Terrance Osborne, luxury getaways from premier destinations throughout the Crescent City, and exclusive cultural experiential offerings. Attendees not only walked away having experienced extraordinary moments and lasting memories, but also with a deeper commitment to Son of a Saint’s mission.
“A Night in New York” was not just a signature event — it was a milestone, proving that Son of a Saint’s story truly is in every city, with an impact that knows no bounds.
WARREN
2024 Mentee of the Year
Upon joining Son of a Saint, my mother believed it was essential for me to see men in a different, positive manner. Coming from a negative situation, I was filled with anger, defiance, and resistance, and I lost hope and faith for my future. Many times, I questioned how my life would turn out going from a boy to a young man without a father, trying to figure things out. At one stage in my life, all the qualities I yearned for in a father seemed unattainable.
I needed to challenge my opinion about being a fatherless boy. Growing up without a father present meant my life had to be poured into with God’s love and support.
Through the Son of a Saint program, I’ve been allowed to share life with mentors from every aspect of life. They have molded me to be the best version of myself, especially Mr. Starks who’s my dedicated mentor. I have learned to be patient and kind. This program has molded me to become a leader to respect. My life has become balanced. I have had
numerous opportunities to see what success looks like, from attending a variety of camps to work-related internships.
Without Son of a Saint, there would be a void in my house. I am very grateful for the mentorship that has expanded my horizons and shaped me to be the young man I am today. Becoming the 2024 Mentee of the Year holds a lot of value of which I’m appreciative. As I enter a new chapter in my life, I will continue to be a noble, humble, respectful leader and, as a role model to the younger mentees, I will always display a great character that Son of a Saint instilled into me.
HENRY OFFIAH
2024 Mentor of the Year
I’ve been a mentor with Son of a Saint since 2022, and it’s been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. Through this program, I’ve had the chance to build a genuine bond with my mentee while giving back to my community, which is something that’s always been important to me, whether it’s through time, presence, or support. Joining came when I needed purpose and connection, and Son of a Saint has given me both.
Being a mentor has profoundly changed me. It’s shown me the immense value of having someone in your corner to guide, challenge, and help you reach the next step. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the mentors who poured into me and taught me countless life lessons. From high school principals and teachers to college coaches, professors, and colleagues in my industry, each played a role in shaping the man I am today. Son of a Saint has allowed me to pay it forward and continue that impact cycle for the next generation.
Even when I’m smiling and showing up every day, like many of us, I still carry my struggles. But this space, this community, has become a source of positive energy for me. Just being there for the boys. Whether it is helping them with homework, going to Saints & Pels games, or simply listening when they need to talk, it reminds me why this work matters. It’s the small moments that build trust and make a lasting difference.
Mentorship isn’t about having all the correct answers. It’s about consistency, care, and showing up. Son of a Saint has helped me grow, not just as a mentor, but as a person. Watching these young men grow into confident, thoughtful individuals has been incredible. This organization is changing lives, including mine, and I’m proud to be a part of it.
KIMBERLY WEBER-THOMAS
Mom of mentees Michael and Robert Son of a Saint Driver
When I was asked to express what “Son of a Saint” meant to me, I got emotional. It forced me to confront why my sons were eligible for this organization in the first place. Since my husband passed away three years ago, Son of a Saint, along with everyone involved in the day-to-day operations— especially the mentees and their guardians—has been a beacon of light during a dark time in our lives.
Son of a Saint has provided mentorship and guidance for Robert and Michael, and it has also allowed me to reconnect with my sons by hiring me as a driver. This role has given me a renewed sense of purpose. I have the opportunity to speak with other guardians who are navigating similar struggles, seeking the best ways to support our sons, grandsons, nephews, and all fatherless boys—because they are all our sons. I get to spend valuable time with all the mentees including my sons. My parenting is more intentional now because, through these young men, I have learned what my sons may or may not need from me.
At one point, I felt lost and unsure about how to fill the big shoes left behind by their father. But God knew exactly what we needed. This organization is not just another program; they have become part of our village, our family. Since becoming mentees, my sons’ confidence has grown tremendously. They have learned to advocate for themselves, become more independent, and have made friends who I know will be there for life. It’s like a brotherhood where they feel safe being themselves.
I want to remind Mr. Sonny that on the challenging days, when things may not seem so clear, just know that this program is not only for fatherless boys; it’s also for the guardians raising them who are striving to see the light and keep moving forward. “Son of a Saint” is that light and the hope for so many of us.
MILES STEWART
Son of a Saint Alumnus
The U.S. Military Academy at West Point Graduate
I was introduced to Son of a Saint at a young age. It was at a stage in my development when I was not yet at the point of no return in terms of getting in trouble in school, and yet it was early enough for me to learn from a role model. Early in my life, I knew I had a father, but I didn’t know who he was. I was lacking a male figure in my life. Son of a Saint’s Founder + CEO, Mr. Sonny, became that in a heartbeat.
The first time Mr. Sonny and I spent time together, he took me to see his alma mater St. Augustine High School’s Friday night football game. That was not only my first time attending a high school football game, but we also played catch in the parking lot, and I met two of my lifelong brothers. Mr. Sonny also made trips to my school for important meetings. He showed me right from wrong and also helped teach me and my fellow mentees how to keep our heads straight amidst all the chaos and changes that adolescence can bring. Mr. Sonny kicked off my football career by buying nearly all my gear. As time went on, he put me in rooms and restaurants that I had no idea existed, and
he found ways to let us travel out of the state and out of the country. More recently, he helped me get in contact with my U.S. Representative to attend West Point.
Many of my friends and I didn’t see past New Orleans and what was immediately in front of us. We didn’t see the opportunities that awaited us in life. However, with Son of a Saint, we were forced to see it. Every mentor in Son of a Saint was always one call away and always found a way to help ease our lives. They found a way to inspire and motivate us. Having that in your corner makes success a lot easier to achieve.
Finally, Son of a Saint gave my life something to represent other than just my family name. It meant something going into an event with Son of a Saint on my chest or speaking on the news that was watched by almost every adult who knew me. Son of a Saint introduced me to a future. Son of a Saint gave me a purpose to do right when no one was watching.
RYAN AND STEPHANIE BURKS
Son of a Saint supporters since 2016
We support Son of a Saint because its mission is rooted in authenticity. It’s rare to find an organization that is founded and run by a person who’s lived the experience and brings genuine passion and skill to its development. The success of all nonprofits is driven by fundraising ability. This is why we not only invest personally, but we took the mantle of being the 2024 Gala Chairs because we want to see Son of a Saint continue to thrive and positively impact the lives of our community’s most vulnerable youth. This organization provides the greatest ROI on your community investment because you can truly watch the transformation of these boys into young men. If you love New Orleans, invest in its future.
DANIEL AND SARAH FLETCHER
Son of a Saint supporters since 2022
We first discovered Son of a Saint through Sarah’s work as a school psychologist in local schools. As she connected with more mentees in the program, it became clear that they had access to valuable tools and support not always available to other students. Recognizing that true healing happens within a strong community, we are proud to contribute by supporting mental health services for guardians and transportation assistance for mentees. We believe that the best outcomes arise when the entire circle surrounding a mentee is strong. Son of a Saint provides a solid foundation for these young men—whether through mentorship, life skills, or simply the reassurance that someone is always in their corner. We are excited for the future of Son of a Saint and the ever-growing impact of the community they have built.
JEREMY WAXMAN
VP, Accounting and Administration, Co-Chair of VICI Volunteers, VICI Properties
We are thrilled to support Son of a Saint as an innovative and impactful organization that aligns with the youth development pillar of our corporate giving framework. We were first introduced to Son of a Saint through its visionary founder, Sonny Lee, whose own story has resulted in life-changing opportunities and experiences for so many young men in New Orleans. In 2024, we were delighted to host five mentees in New York City, providing them with an opportunity to learn about career trajectories in finance and real estate from members of our team and experience the NYSE closing bell ceremony. We are encouraged by the impactful work of Son of a Saint in positively impacting the New Orleans community.
KATIE MULARZ
Chief Impact Officer, Emeril Lagasse Foundation
At Emeril Lagasse Foundation, we believe in investing in programs that create lasting change—and Son of a Saint is one of those programs. Since 2020, we’ve been proud to support the Emeril Lagasse Foundation–Son of a Saint Nutrition Education Program, helping to pilot the initiative in its earliest stages and watching it grow into a powerful tool for both mentees and their families. The results speak for themselves: mentees are not only learning how to nourish their bodies, but they’re also bringing those lessons home, inspiring healthier habits across entire households. Son of a Saint is building stronger young men and stronger communities, and we’re honored to stand behind their mission.
