During the Late Palaeolithic period, when Thasos was maybe still part of the continent, we have the first ascertained human activity at Tzines, where an important ochre mine has been excavated. Before the excavation at Limenaria, Kastri was the only settlement that has offered secure evidence for Neolithic occupation, while dim indications came from two other sites: the acropolis at Limenas and a cave at Skala Maries.
The Early Bronze Age came to light in small scale trial digs at coastal sites, which seem to be the principal poles of attraction for the population in the 3rd mill. The available evidence comes from the cave of Drakotrypa near Panagia and the promontory of Agios Antonios. Until recently, the only prehistoric settlement that has been to some extent excavated was Skala Sotiros, where impressive architectural remains of the Early Bronze Age came to light inducing a great deal of discussion.
