possible with the ups and downs of the Covid-19 crisis, which is indeed a great trial for us all.

As we know we have two central objectives, strengthening the interior life and

practical assistance to the Living Stones in the Holy Land. With regards to the latter, your response to the special appeal for the Covid appeal for the Holy Land has been exceptionally generous, with approximately €70,000 remitted to the Patriarch in recent months. All in all over €2m has been sent there by the world-wide Order. The area has been devastated with the collapse of the Pilgrimage/Tourist industry, one of the economic bed-rocks of the Christian population. Your Christian support was the subject of a full one page report in the Irish Catholic newspaper of 1st October last.

Our normal project support this year was focussed on the refurbishment of the

oldest School in the Patriarchate. I am glad to report that, as you read this, the finishing touches to the school in Safout are being applied.

We on Council are aware of the disappointment being felt at the lack of meetings

of the Lieutenancy. For those with Zoom (which is a cloud based video conferencing service for use on your PC and managed for us by Council member Dr Stephen Dorgan) we shall have a series of events. However our November Mass will be streamed from Ennis Cathedral.

Safout Update

The Lieutenancy is financing the refurbishment of a school in Safout, North West of Amman. The School

was established in 1935 and needed substantial work. Thanks to your generous donation of â‚Ź63,400 the work is ongoing as we go to print. Despite lockdowns and curfews in Jordan, the Safout School renovations project has progressed nicely and it is nearing completion within a few weeks. Below, please find some recent photos which shows major progress on the various works including retiling the whole school, new infrastructure of electrical and mechanical works, new rest rooms, renovated kitchen, new doors and windows, etc. Once completed, it will be a major change to the students once they get back to a normally functioning school post Covid-19.

Safout has a total population of 15,000 with a Christian population of 1,750 and 76 students in the School.

The School is the smallest school, not only in Jordan, but also in all of the Holy Land.

Pilgrimage 2019 and Proposed Pilgrimage 2022 Last October/ November

50 members of the Lieutenancy with their friends went on Pilgrimage to the Holy Land, principally Israel, Palestine and the Occupied Territories and, travelling in the footsteps of Christ, prayed at the traditional sites and visited three of the Lieutenancy supported projects.

In 2022, subject to public health issues, we shall again proceed on

Pilgrimage and this time we shall include Jordan, where we shall visit some of the projects you have financially supported. Keep that year in mind and now is the time to commence depositing a euro or pound into the Post Office Savings Bank

Table Quiz

Several members, including Thomas Kilduff and David Williams, are assembling the content for the upcoming Table Quiz on the evening of December 3rd. In preparing for what should be a fun night, questions will include those about the Order, the Holy Land and our own Lieutenancy. The structure will be similar to that of an evening Pub or Table Quiz and questions will be in a format similar to “Who wants to be a Millionaire”. It should serve as a fun, engaging activity, enabling us to connect with each other on a dark December evening.

The event will be held via Zoom and those joining should bring paper and a pen to keep score, and a cup of tea, a companion or 2 (as permitted by Covid regulations), and maybe even a glass of wine.

My prayers for the Holy Land

Cardinal Seán Brady opens up about his relationship with the Holy Land, answering

Rodney Leonard’s questions.

As I pray in the Holy Land I pray, first of all, in thanksgiving. It has been my great

privilege to visit the Holy Land on five occasions. Each time my FIRST reaction was that of the Psalms; I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the Lord’s House” and now we are here – standing inside the Gates of Jerusalem.

Seán Cardinal Brady on pilgrimage in Jordan 2016

Muredach Dynan

Dr. Muredach Dynan has joined us in the Irish Lieutenancy from Queensland Australia.

He is Professor of Education Emeritus, Australian Catholic University, in which he served for several years in leadership roles including that of Pro-Vice -Chancellor. He was recently appointed to the board of the Northern Ireland Education Authority to represent interests for Catholic education.

Archbishop Charles J. Brown

Pope Francis has named Archbishop Charles J. Brown, KC*HS as the new

nuncio to the Philippines.

The New York native has been the Vatican’s diplomatic representative in

Albania since March 2017. In Manila, he succeeds Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia, who Pope Francis appointed permanent observer to the United Nations in November 2019.

He is a member and good friend of the Lieutenancy and follows our work with great interest.

Irish Catholic Article

As you may know we were featured in the Irish Catholic recently. (October 1

2020) The article was entitled Pandemic leaves Christians in the Holy Land ‘ teetering on the edge’. Amongst issues raised and reported by Ruadhan Jones were those of the plight of the Christian community who were worst affected and least able to afford it. Our Lieutenant Peter remarked “much of our funding goes towards schooling - we fund the Latin Patriarchate to pay the salaries of teachers and support staff and the erection and maintenance of schools.” Since May the Order has donated around €2 million for the Covid-19 fund, in addition €1million for more general humanitarian costs. Thus far the Irish Order has donated €65,000. Peter said “We received cheques from €50 to well in excess of €5,000 - 5% of our members in excess of €5,000. I expect we will send out an additional €50,000 in addition to normal donations, in the next 2 to 3 months.”

Through your huge generosity we have raised over €65,000 for the

Covid-19 appeal in the Holy Land which has helped massively. This is one of the receipt from Jerusalem and I think it's a true reflection of the generosity, good will and faith of our members. Reflections A foolish obstacle St. Paul was right, you know. Remember how he said: “While the Jews

demand miracles and the Greeks look for wisdom, we are preaching a Our Ecclestical Master at the crucified Christ: to the Jews and obstacle they cannot get over, to the gentiles Sea of Galilee foolishness, but to those who have been called, whether they are Jews or Greeks, a Christ who is both the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1Cor.1:23-24). And we, ourselves, are not always a million miles from the thinking of the Jews and Greeks of St. Paul’s time. The idea of crucifixion, represented by the Cross, is not one we find easy to embrace today either.

A modern Cross There is no question or doubt about it, but the experience of the world’s people this year as we contend with

and endeavour to meet the challenges presented by Covid-19, is nothing less than a modern-day cross. For many, the past several months have been characterised by fear, anxiety, and uncertainty, in addition to restricted movement, long periods at home, isolation and loneliness. None of us did anything to bring this situation about, and none of us can bring it single-handedly to a successful conclusion. We look forward to the day when we get up and we do not have to hear about “cocooning”, restricted movement, face masks, hand sanitising, and so on. Whether we had adverted to it or not, what we have been experiencing is nothing less than a seriously heavy and uncomfortable cross.

The Triumph of the Cross Each Autumn we celebrate the feast of The Exaltation of the Cross, or as it is also known, The Triumph of

the Cross. Our faith is not something abstract and merely spiritual. No! It is rooted in God’s direct intervention, in the person of Jesus, in the life of the world at a particular moment in history. While the message was one of love and peace, this particular episode ended in a real crucifixion and Jesus’ death on a real cross.

Christians ever since have held high the cross as a reminder that, in fact, it didn’t all end there. Again, St. Paul proclaims it clearly: “But Christ has in fact been raised from the dead.” (1Cor15:20)

Hope in a time of distress When Our Lady appeared in Knock in 1879, it was at a time of enormous social and economic challenge

for the people of Ireland. The Novena Prayer to Our Lady of Knock recalls the significance of the apparition with this powerful line: “Our Lady of Knock, Queen of Ireland, you gave hope to your people in a time of distress and comforted them in sorrow.” During this pandemic, there is no reason for us to feel any the less in need of Our Lady’s comfort and the hope that she brought so willingly on that occasion. We invoke her intercession for ourselves and, in a very special way, for the people of the Holy Land upon whom this cross rests particularly heavily given the political and economic realities with which they must live every day.

And maybe the Lord’s words in St. John’s Gospel will bring hope to these “living stones” and to us too: “In the world you will have hardship, but be courageous: I have conquered the world.” (Jn.16:33).

Masks a feature of the Covid-19 era is the requirement to wear a face mask. We have

developed a machine-washable face mask with the Jerusalem Cross embroided on it.

Cost €18 per mask; €45 for a set of three. This/these will be posted to members when orders are received at masks@holysepulchre.ie.

Msgr. Edward Dunne DSM KCHS, admitted 1994

Edward Dunne was born in Skryne parish on 07 August 1938. Following his

primary education in Skryne NS he attended St Finian’s College in Mullingar. He was ordained in Rome in 1963 following studies at the Irish College. On his return to his native diocese, Fr Dunne served in the parishes of Rahan (1963), Dunboyne (1964 – during which time he also worked in the Apostolic Nunciature), Donore (1965), Coole (1968) & Stamullen (1969). Fr Dunne was appointed Chaplain to the Forces at Gormanston Camp in November 1970. He served with 24 Inf Gp in Cyprus in summer of 1973, and on winter trips in Lebanon with 44 Inf Bn in 1978 and 48th Inf Bn in 1980. He served as Head Chaplain to the Forces at McKee Barracks and at Defence Forces Headquarters until his retirement in 1991. Msgr Dunne was appointed Parish Priest of Dunboyne & Kilbride in 1991 and served there until his retirement in 2007. Fr Dunne is the only chaplain to have been awarded An Bonn Seirbhís Dearscna (the Distinguished Service Medal with Merit).

The Citation reads: “For dedication to duty above the ordinary and for displaying courage under fire in

bringing spiritual succour to a wounded comrade during a night attack by hostile forces on the Headquarters of the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon at Naqoura on 19th April 1979.”

Taken from the funeral homily by Rev.Fr. Robert McCabe KHS: “I know that Ted’s memory would have

gone back to the Lateran to his own ordination day - a call to service - a call to duty. What a rich variety of work in the Lord’s vineyard has developed since those days in Rome for Ted Dunne!”

That generosity towards the people of the Holy Land continued in supporting projects in troubled parts of

the Middle East with the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. A generosity of prayer in bunkers and trenches developed into his Chaucer - M*A*S*H style pilgrimages and holidays in Rome, Lourdes, Malta, Lisieux, the Holy Land. Amongst members who attended his funeral Mass were former comrades Comdt. Frank Hearns and Col. Eiver O’Hanlon.

Pilgrims from all over the world together with the local Church participate in Eucharistic Adoration at 8.30 pm (Jerusalem Time) in the Grotto of the Annunciation in Nazareth on Thursdays. Deep moment of prayer with songs, the reading of Psalms and the Gospel for the following Sunday.

Patrick Dullaghan, KHS BE admitted 2010 Pat went to his eternal reward on June 26

2020. Having graduated from UCD he worked in the UK on development and operational projects for British Rail. With his beloved Nancy they returned to Ireland as our economy improved. th

His professional life presented many challenges to a young engineer in the 70s, but

was in time to become ‘the person to go to” for resolution of the most complex engineering issues, and was rightly promoted to more senior roles. As a character and sometimes raconteur greatly enjoyed trips to the rugby internationals with colleagues and was invariably of good demeanor enjoyed having a great work ethic and appetite for same enjoyed the application of mathematics especially to the building of bridges and civil works

The latter years saw him as County Engineer for Limerick and later in his beloved Dun Laoghaire as Chief

Engineer. He often referred to his great love Anna. (Nancy) and gave her continuing credit for her support and nurturing of their family Caroline, James, Joanna and Louise. One of the many efforts for others Pat committed to over the years was the funding and organisation of the annual pilgrimages to Knock for busloads of those who would not otherwise have an opportunity.

From his final illness and to date the groups and activities (Trustee of the Knights of Saint Columbanus,

Community etc.) that he was associated with are the poorer. Pat was a proud Co. Louth sportsman, played inter county football and handball, shared his gifts with others and I trust that he will continue to do so in the new and eternal Jerusalem.

Micheal O’Dwyer, KCHS admitted 2009

Michael was born and educated in Tuam, Co. Galway and was one of six children.

He studied architecture in Dublin, later joining AIB Bank, working in the Premises Department, managing the branch network.

Michael married Imelda in 1970 in the Cathedral, Ennis, Co. Clare and subsequently lived in Leopardstown, Co. Dublin. They celebrated 50 years of happy marriage in March 2020. Michael was very proud of his four children, their spouses and eight grandchildren who brought him great joy.

Michael had varied interests, including classical music, travel, sport, politics, genealogy and antique furniture restoration.

One of his most meaningful experiences was his pilgrimage to the Holy Land with many of the members, including his brother and fellow member Sean.

Michael is sadly missed but was a great role model of Christian life and values for his family. May he now rest in peace.

An urgent message from the Chancellor

His Eminence the Cardinal Grand Master has admitted three new members

to the Order in our Lieutenancy. These are most welcome. Papers have been received for two further aspirants and these are at present being processed.

Interest has been expressed in a number of other cases which are at present being encouraged.

May I once more request all members to give consideration to the possible

identification and approaching of suitable candidates for admission to our Order. We ourselves must first be confident in our own membership of the Church and in our membership of the Order and in our understanding what this membership involves. The Grand Master states “Today the Order welcomes people who accept and live the ideal of a Christian Life that is rooted in an empty tomb where the living risen Jesus is encountered”. “The life of a Knight or Dame is centred on the mystery of Jesus”.

The purpose of joining the Order is to serve the Catholic Church and to carry out acts of charity which

make the operations of maintaining the Christian presence in the Holy Land possible. Joining the Order means undertaking a commitment for life. We emphasise that the purpose of joining is not to become a member of a prestigious organisation in order to boast of one’s status or to acquire personal benefits and advantages. Rather, by inviting a person to join we are paying him or her a signal compliment. By the invitation we are saying that we believe that she or he is a suitable person to make the commitment to Witness to the faith and to lead an exemplary life of continuing charity in support of the Christian communities in the Holy Land.

We are offering that person an opportunity to share in our mission and (pace Saint Augustine) to avoid thirsting in the desert of a meaningless life by drinking of charity.

We may feel that some of these high sounding ideals are not really relating to us; however we should look at this from the point of view of the Christians in the Holy Land and note firstly the generous commitment of members each year to make their donations and particularly now, in recognising the plight of our brothers in the Holy Land due to the COVID-19 crisis, the very generous response to the Lieutenant’s appeal. I therefore urge members to be confident in the Mission of the Order and to continue to try to identify potential new members.
