Dear fellow member During this enforced shut down I have taken the opportunity to do some reading in relation to the Holy Land and its history. The following extract from the famous sermon preached by Pope Urban 11 at the Council of Clermont in 1095 took my fancy:

“You must hasten to carry aid to your brethren dwelling in the East who need your help”.

That is particularly true today. The Covid-19 Virus (coronavirus) is taking its toll disproportionately in the Holy Land.

Tourism / Pilgrimages will not happen this year, a key employment area as you

know. Our Christian sisters and brothers there have no welfare state safety net nor indeed do many have public health care available to them. If their work place is closed they and their family have absolutely no income or other support. If you become unwell your family must pay for your care.

In that context the Cardinal Grand Master, conscious of this extreme emergency

has made a special appeal to each of us, dame and knight, cleric and lay, and asked each of us for an extra contribution now to support the basic needs of Christian families, to support the continued education of their children and to provide essential medicines.

I know you will do your best to help.

It is a matter of great regret that we have had to cancel a number of events this year

for understandable public health reasons. However the formal admission of candidates will take place as will promotion of members with ceremonies presently.

We shall resume functions, centered on the Eucharist, as soon as circumstances permit.

Keep our ill members in your prayers as well as Margaret Mooney and Tom Lynch

who have now hopefully been raised in glory.

A proposal to all members from the Grand Master

My warm greetings to all members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

Upon my arrival at the Order as Grand Master, I wanted to reflect on how I can be present not only at

central offices and occasionally at Investitures, but also relate more closely to you, the Members of our Pontifical Institution. Ours is a "large parish" and, as in all large families, sometimes distance and numbers can make relations less personal. I would like to create initiatives through our existing means of communications to enter into dialogue by listening to your questions and offering food for thought.

From next month, a new section will be added to our website www.oessh.va and our Newsletter: Grand

Master’s Corner. Each month it will host the reply to one of the most significant letters that I will receive.

I would prefer questions relating to our Order, to its life within the Church, our Christian life, our commitment

in the Holy Land. I would like your questions to be less formal and more authentic, while always respecting the norms regarding data protection and confidentiality with references to people and places.

The Way of the Cross There

was something rather authentic about the noise, the busyness, and the disinterested crowds of ordinary people going about their ordinary daily tasks and paying no attention at all to what was passing them by on the street. I have to say that, for me, it added positively to the whole experience. The Via Crucis, included as part of the Equestrian Order’s pilgrimage to the Holy Land last autumn, was eye-opening. It was very easy to see what it might have been really like on the first Good Friday long ago. That was just another Friday for most people. Yes, there was a bit of a coffuffle as the soldiers flogged another “criminal” and made him carry his cross along the busy streets to Calvary. It wasn’t an unusual sight – in fact there were two more criminals already there waiting for this one.

Yes, the people had to give way for the few minutes it took for this condemned person and his entourage to

pass by before they could continue what they were doing. Simon of Cyrene took a moment to look too and immediately regretted his curiosity. A group of women gathered at a street corner to offer some kind of moral support. They put themselves in danger’s way, but they felt compelled to stand their ground and they did. Veronica went further and stepped out of the crowd to wipe the sweat and the blood from the Saviour’s face. The streets are so narrow it’s possible to imagine that when Jesus fell on those three occasions, people coming in the opposite direction may have opted to step over him as they hurried along, rather than stopping and being delayed.

Another reality that emerges along the Via Crucis in Jerusalem is that it’s almost impossible to become

recollected and to meditate on the particular station because there are people moving in all directions at every point. Therefore, the fourteen pictures which hang on the walls of every Catholic church afford us the opportunity to pause before each one and to allow ourselves to hear the noise, to feel the crowd, to notice the disinterest, and to focus on that most profound and moving story that is being told before our very eyes.

Meetings of Council of the Lieutenancy.

A few days after each meeting the Communications Officer (Rodney Leonard) issues by email a synopsis of significant issues discussed thereat.

At the Council in Knock a number of members were determined for promotion and these will now be

progressed to the new Grand Master. Members are advised that there will be a pilgrimage of the Order to Lourdes in June 17 to 21st 2021, more details to follow. A new members directory will be published. The Order will have a new wine for sale this year.

Archbishop Kieran O’Reilly KC*HS was commended on the Holy Land trip by all on theCcouncil. Bishop

Fintan Monahan has now been approved for admission by the Grand Master. There will be no pilgrimage to the shrine of Blessed Barthlo Longo this year due to lack of numbers. .

The total sent to the Holy Land last year was €261K. To date we have sent €33K to Rome this year so far.

A meeting was held with senior seminarians at Maynooth to raise awareness of the Order and this was very well received

April to transact the business of the Order.

Condolences were expressed to Dames Ellen Toner and Margaret Sinnott on the death of their mother

Dame Margaret Mooney which occurred recently.

Amongst the issues discussed or decided It was decided that the next edition of the Newsletter would be progressed urgently, and members requested to forward content or photographs to the Producer, Rodney Leonard. Jerusalem Cross has recently been published by Rome. A hardcopy will be posted to each member. Changes of email addresses should be furnished to the Secretary as they arise.

Spiritual Development. The outcome of the September meeting of Clergy was noted. Henceforth in the conduct of the recitation of the Rosary the Luminous Mysteries should always be used. The possibility of developing a Lieutenancy prayer book will be scoped by a two-member committee.

The Chancellor will be writing to each member on the subject of membership, especially having regard to the enforced cessation of economic activity currently in place. A revised ceremonial for Order admission is being progressed by the Chancellor of the Order.

It was noted with concern that some members have contracted COVID 19. Further the spouse of another member is seriously ill, although not with corona virus. All were asked to remember them in prayer.

Finally, a small number of members have not completed a General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) release form which enables the Lieutenancy to communicate with members. It is hoped that they will return the simple form to the Secretary imminently.

The Council met again on May 14th and decided on the format of the COVID appeal in respect of Jordan and Palestine.

The Council agreed on the format of Zoom online meeting of all members in early June.

A Perfect Peace

Newman, Saint for Our Time, by Bishop Fintan Monahan In

his new book on John Henry Cardinal Newman, Bishop Fintan Monahan describes how Newman suffered illness and exhaustion repeatedly throughout his life, how his father’s business collapsed, his beloved sister Mary died, how he was estranged from his brothers. Newman’s conversion to Catholicism in his forties led to loss of friends and loss of his standing in society. When he reached sixty years of age he was feeling old, alone and a failure. However Bishop Fintan beautifully conveys the spiritual fruits that came from Newman’s absolute trust in God’s plan for him, how the last thirty years of his life were peaceful and full of writing and composing that brought his spiritual fruits to a wide audience, fruits that continue to this day.

In the school where I work, at the start of each year, the students recite in the

Chapel Newman’s prayer ‘The Mission of My Life’. Please read it on page 84 after you purchase this little treasure of a book; it will be the best €7.99 you will have spent all year.

Journeys of Faith

Stories of Pilgrimage from Medieval Ireland, by Louise Nugent This book is well worth purchasing. Not only does it address pilgrimage in

Ireland but also covers pilgrimage inter alia to the Holy Land. Pilgrimage has long held a special place in the hearts of Irish people. In medieval times it was one of the most popular forms of personal devotion, and was practiced by men, women and children from all social classes. Journeys of Faith combines historical sources and archaeological evidence to explore the stories of Irish pilgrims who embarked on these remarkable pilgrimages stretching from Ireland to Jerusalem between the seventh century and the Reformation. Pages 161 to 172 refers interestingly to the Holy Land. She refers to the pilgrimage made by Franciscan Friar Fitz Simon to the Holy Land in 1323. She writes that it took the friar several weeks to secure passage on a ship from Venice to the Holy Land. It was common practice for pilgrims to Jerusalem to collect dust from the Holy Sepulchre and use it for sick pilgrims. The River Jordan was also a regarded as a place of physical healing.

Since we published the Armorial booklet last year with over sixty Arms we have come across fifteen more, not least the Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church! So if you suspect that someone may have a Coat of Arms who is also a member and has some connection with Ireland, please drop an email to Chev. Frank Hurl at frankh@live.ie and your suspicion will be researched and confirmed one way or the other. The person can of course be a contemporary or an historical figure.

October, 2019, was as important a spiritual event for us in Ireland as it is for his home country, Great Britain. th

Both in the written and spoken word St John Henry Newman has left us a wealth of spirituality and wisdom in:1.

the philosophy of religion: The “Grammar of Assent”

theology: The “Development of Christian Doctrine”

4.

education: The “Idea of a University”.

He said that he wanted a “laity who know their religion, to be intellectually inquisitive about human origin, identity and the response of faith to these questions”.

He believed that “something can change while remaining true to itself”. Pope Benedict described this “as a change in continuity rather than a change in rupture”.

His Cardinal’s motto was “Cor ad cor loquitor”, referring to qualities of the heart as a repository of the very special religious experiences throughout one’s life.

He believed that he was “created to do or be something that no one else is created for”.

8.

He believed that he was “a bond of connection between persons”.

The trail of Saintliness he left for Ireland, he hoped “would flow from person to person”.

He believed that “fulfilling one’s own duty is the road to holiness”.

For us in the 21st century St. John Henry Newman poses a challenge: “to have a faith that seeks understanding, to have an intelligence that seeks faith and to challenge the assumptions of the pervading culture around us”.

Finally, he would invite us to pray for our country in these unhinged times: “Lead kindly, light……..”

Order Wine

I had a chance meeting with a wine representative at a tasting in the Westbury some

months ago. To my amazement the man pouring the wine knew the Order and it’s workings very well having worked for the Vatican. To add to this the vineyard he was representing was run by monks and nuns in the Rhône valley who were heirs to the first pontifical vineyard planted by Clement V in 1309. Well known as the Caritatis wine growers all the proceeds go to charity. The wines are excellent and they have agreed to make our own label for the Order. More information will be available at Cong and we hope to have a red and white with the possible addition of a wooden gift box.

Bishops visit Holy Land

The Holy Land Co-ordination of Bishops meets and travels to the Holy Land every January with a focus on prayer, pilgrimage and persuasion. Its aim is to act in solidarity with the Christian community as it experiences intense political and social-economic pressure in the Holy Land.

This

year Bishops Noel Treanor and Alan McGuckian SJ were amongst the European and American bishops who travelled. In their concluding statement they said

“The local bishops have sounded the alarm about living conditions

becoming “more and more unbearable”. This is painfully clear in the West Bank where our sisters and brothers are denied even basic rights including freedom of movement. In Gaza, the political decisions of all sides have resulted in the creation of an open-air prison, human rights abuses and a profound humanitarian crisis.

We were welcomed by families whose focus is now day-to-day survival and whose aspirations have been reduced to bare essentials such as electricity and clean water.

Amid these circumstances, we are moved by the sacrifice of religious sisters, lay people and priests who are reaching out with respect to every side, in order to build a better future for all. They offer vital services, especially education, job opportunities and care for the most vulnerable people. We give thanks for their witness.

We encourage Christians in our own countries to pray for and support this mission. The increase in people making pilgrimages to the Holy Land is encouraging and we call for those who come to ensure they encounter the local communities.”

Abouna reported that the bishops began their visit in Gaza and celebrated Mass with members of Holy

Family Catholic Parish there January 12. With just over 1,000 people, the Christian community in the Gaza Strip is very tiny, but the educational, vocational and health services it provides to the general population are highly regarded.

Bishop Treanor noted that while the Thomas Aquinas Training Center provides advanced training for

young people, the availability of good jobs is so minimal that often thousands of applicants vie for one position. “Opportunities are so limited and the current situation is not sustainable,” he said. “A solution must be found. Though the Catholic community is vibrant, the number of Catholics has gone down drastically and the fact so many people are leaving has an impact on the Christian population.”

“On entering Gaza one is struck by the isolation; of the place, of the territory and immediately by the

evident poverty”, said Bishop Noel.

Speaking to Vatican News, he noted the amount of young people walking around who were not attending

school. But, what he was also able to witness was a light of hope as visited the Catholic parish in Gaza run

by Argentinian priest Fr Gabrielle Romanelli.

The Bishop stressed that he was particularly impressed by a centre run by religious sisters which provides

care to children with disabilities and those who have been abandoned by parents. He also said, he was struck by the love, care and attention provided by the sisters to their little charges.

Our 2020 Project assisting “The Living Stones”- Safout [1 Peter 2:5]

Safout is located north west of Amman an urban area, yet economically poor. The school occupies a small plot of land with no possibility of expansion. The population consists mostly of employees and workers who commute everyday to work in Fuheis, Salt and Amman, while the rest of the population are elderly who live quietly at home.

Latin Patriarchate: The first school, a very simple construction, was established in 1935, and occupied one

of two- rooms built at the side of a very small church to house the parish priest. Later, three more classrooms were built in 1978 to accommodate an increasing student enrolment. The following year, a new church was built alongside the house. This allowed the original church to become part of the school. Since early 1980, a house for the priest has been built above two of the three newer classrooms, and so he lives on the premises. In 1993 because of the diminishing number of children attending the school and new government regulations, the grades four, five and six had to be discontinued. This allowed the other three grades to have a classroom each.

Statistics: Population 15,000 Christians 1,750 Latin Christians 160 LPJ School: Students 76

This school is the smallest school, not only in Jordan, but

also in all of the Holy Land. The school does not comply with the minimum health and safety standards for the students. Those serious safety concerns and health complaints must be treated urgently especially in bathrooms and classrooms. The work will include changing tiles, safety and continuous electricity supply and other mechanical works.

The Lieutenancy is providing €63,400 towards this project and the local contribution will be approx €12,000.

You will see on the map on the first page, the town of Birzeit in Israel. The last Newsletter described our assistance there in 2019.

Holy Family Children’s Home Dear friends & benefactors,

In these days of confinement, we are thinking of you. We watch the news

saddened every day. What to do? If not, pray and pray again that this pandemic will stop spreading in the world, and especially in Europe.

Our children do not really understand what is going on. They are confined

to the premises of the Creche, alone with us. There are no visitors and no volunteers, the children feel sad too. We try to fill their time just as if it is a holiday period. Yet they can feel that this is no holiday, they are not allowed to get out of the Creche and no one is allowed to get into it and make any contact with them.

Covid 19 and the Holy Land

The civilian head of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem is Mr. Sami El -Yousef.

Many members met him on our Pilgrimage last year. His periodic newsletters are posted on the members portion of our website and provide an on the ground view of developments there.

“At a time when the most sacred holy places including churches, mosques and synagogues are closed, the

faithful will celebrate (Easter) quietly at home, with family and neighbors. In a Holy Land that has been marred with conflict, fighting, revenge, and an ongoing state of war, ironically the coronavirus ravaging through the world has not discriminated against anyone based on their nationality, religion, color, sex, or any other classification. Thus, we were all equally prone and under attack. The spirit of cooperation amongst enemies brings a new breath of fresh air as Israelis and Palestinians have put all their differences aside to fight a common enemy and to strategize and cooperate together.�

In mid May His Excellency the Grand Master, conscious of this extreme emergency made a special appeal to each member of the Order, and asked each of us for an extra contribution now to support the basic needs of Christian families, to support the continued education of their children and to provide essential medicines.

In Europe the State provides medical treatment and assistance to all who need it, underpinned by its own

resources. There are very little resources in either Palestine or Jordan to meet the funding required. Cardinal Filoni has set up a special Covid-19 Humanitarian Support Fund which is expected to deal with the basic needs of about 2,000 families in Jordan and Palestine and provide financial aid to approximately 10,000 families that will not be able to pay tuition fees.

In that funds will be distributed to Christians, not just Catholic Latin rite, we might consider requesting

families, friends or colleagues, to provide alms for this most deserving cause, central as it is to our mission in the Land of Jesus.

Source and Application of Funds

for the Irish Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in 2019 and to February 26th, 2020.

Dear Members, The Irish Lieutenancy has a proud tradition of making significant annual contributions to our brothers and

sisters in the Holy Lands, the ‘Living Stones’ that bind us to the very roots of our faith. These contributions come almost exclusively from the annual donations made by members of the Lieutenancy, and they bring real benefits to the lives of the ‘Living Stones’. Through your generosity The Irish Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in 2019, and to date in 2020 has raised funds amounting to €363,747.

Your contributions have helped enable, the training and ministry of clergy within the Holy Land, the establishment and running of schools, the support of social enterprise bodies that have provided the ‘Living Stones’, not just with employment, but with dignity and a means of sustaining their families, as well as providing care and medical treatment to those in need. In the last few years we have also significantly aided those victims so dreadfully affected by the war in Syria.

During 2019, and to date in 2020, we were able to contribute over €320,000 to enhance, and in some cases

underpin, the lives of the ‘Living Stones’, as well as provide humanitarian aid to those critically in need. By reading our regular Newsletters and looking at our website, you quickly see the vital difference your annual donation makes and the impact it has on the lives of our brothers and sisters in the Holy Lands.

Your contributions in 2019, and to date in 2020, have been used to support a variety of deserving causes in

the Holy Land to include:

• Rehabilitation works of the multi-purpose hall in Bir Zeit • Renovation of the Rosary Sisters Convent at the Latin Patriarchate Parish Church in Zabardeh, Palestine • LPJ Schools (Naour School) • Humanitarian Aid • Humanitarian Aid specifically towards the cost of supporting the Iraqi refugee projects in Jordan by the LPJ • Apostolic Movement at St Maroun’s Maronite Parish in Jish/Gush Halav, Israel • Daughters of Charity - St VdeP, Bethlehem Creche/Orphanage • 2019 ROACO Projects • Rehabilitation works for Safout Latin School in Jordan (to date in 2020, €40,000 has been forwarded specifically for this project. We wish to increase this donation to €63,500, and await further donations from our members to make this possible)

Knock Pilgrimage 2020

The pilgrimage to Knock 2020 was a very prayerful, sociable and well attended occasion. Fr. Patrick Mangan celebrated Mass both days and delivered two distinct homilies on the subject of the importance of prayer and the recognition by the Lord of a humble life.

On prayer he said “As Christians we must keep plugging away living our

faith in a world where people are searching for meaning and purpose in a loud ,busy and violent world. I would tell everyone to keep plugging away because at best it is like being in a dark room with someone you love, you don't see them but you know they are there”. Prayer is trying to raise our hearts and minds to God, so how should you pray?

First: Plan to pray do not leave it to chance Second: Always start by asking the Holy Spirit for help in your prayers.

Pray; Come Holy Spirit, teach me to pray, help me to do it Third: Decide what you are going to do. Where to pray, how to pray ( slowly, lovingly ) sometimes use a passage from the Bible and sometimes use your own words Fourth: If you have distractions then turn your distractions into prayer Lastly, trying to pray is praying. Never give up. In his second homily on being humble he based his talk on Luke chapter 13 “ The Lord will recognise us only for our humble life and good life - A life of faith that results in good works”.

The passage presents Jesus on his way to Jerusalem where he knows he is going to die on the cross for our

salivation. As usual he teaches in the towns and villages on his way there. A man asked him “Lord will those who are saved be few?” Many at that time asked the same question. Jesus reverses the question which stresses quantity , that is “are they few” and places the question in the context of responsibility , inviting us to make good of the present. Indeed he says “strive to enter by the narrow door , for many I tell you will seek to enter and not be able”. Jesus does not give us false hope by saying, yes don’t worry it is easy. In this sense he is saying that in order to save oneself one has to love God and neighbour and this is uncomfortable.

It is a narrow doorway because it is demanding. People who associated with Our Lord would claim his acquaintance ,reminding them that they ate with the Lord and listened to his teachings. But the Lord will repeat that he does not know them and he calls them workers of iniquity. Here is the problem! The Lord will not recognise us for our claims; “But I know a Cardinal in Rome or I was friends with that Bishop” no claims do not count . The Lord will recognise us only for our humble life , a life of faith that resulted in good works. So we are called to establish a true communion with Jesus, by prayer, going to Church, drawing near the sacraments and nourishing ourselves with the word of God.

Ascertain whether it is the desire of the family that members

attend robed. Presuming it is, obtain the name of survivor of the deceased member, tel number, date, time and location of the removal; date, time, location of the Church at which the funeral Mass will be celebrated and if possible the name and contact number of the celebrant (will the celebrant permit us to attend robed?).

In Memoriam Dame Margaret Mooney, DC*HS, Palm of Jerusalem Dame Margaret died in April 2020 after a quarter century of service to the Living Stones and is now

reunited with her beloved husband Cathal.

Margaret Keyland was born in Ballymena in 1926. She was among the early women graduates of Queen’s

University Belfast and in another era our late Chancellor Tom Lynch. She then taught Geography and Latin in Ballnahinch Grammar until her marriage to Cathal in 1953 and joined him in running their hotel and bar business in Armagh, Belfast and Dunadry. She was a member of the Senate of the University of Ulster, President of Queen’s University Women’s Graduate Association and chair of Belfast Education and Library Board. Golf was a passion and she was a former Lady Captain of Ardglass. A life long enthusiast for higher education, she was a supporter of the Pontifical College in Maynooth and of the University of Bethleham.

She was admitted in 1995, and last year the Grand Master approved the conferral of the Palm of Jerusalem,

in silver, on her. This rare award was made in Maynooth last year by the Vice Governor General of Europe.

One abiding impression left with the writer was her

cheery disposition and her span of interests. On the pilgrim bus, whether it be in Israel, Palestine etc she was ever attentive to the various places visited and in the off moments a great reader, indeed she must have been one of the best reader members of the Lieutenancy, especially in the non-fiction area.

Heaven has gained and we have lost a great member.

Sincere sympathies to her family and to our fellow members, Ellen, Margaret and her son in law Brendan.

Fr Bernard Kavanagh CSsR While Fr Bernard had no connection to the Order, it was decided that on the occasion of the Pilgrimage we

would visit and pray at a rarely visited grave. He was, afterall, a fellow Irishman. Fr Bernard whose father trained as a doctor in Paris, became an assistant to Sir William Wilde, father of Oscar. He obtained a post in a Limerick Hospital and Bernard became one of six children with four older sisters and one younger brother born there. He was professed as a Redemptorist in 1882 and ordained in 1890. At the age of 50 and on the outbreak of World War 1 he was commissioned to be a chaplain in the forces, one of 11 Irish Redemptorists who volunteered as chaplains in the war . The 10th (Irish) Division were among the vanguard of the force that captured Jerusalem. In late October and early November 1917 Allenby’s troops captured Gaza and Beersheeba, the latter being a town founded by Abraham, the father of the Jewish faith. The capture of Gaza was assigned to Dublin man Gen Edward Bulfin the commander of XXI Corps and the highest-ranking Irish Catholic in the British Army during the war.

In December 2017, Gen Edmund Allenby of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force entered the captured city of

Jerusalem. It was the culmination of a month-long campaign known as the Third Battle of Gaza. Allenby entered the holy city on foot, an act of humility and in contrast to Kaiser Wilhelm II who had entered the city on a white charger almost 20 years previously. Thomas Lynch KSG, KCHS, admitted in 2013 Tom Lynch, whose sudden and untimely death occurred on 1

April last, was a man superabundantly gifted. He served as Chancellor of the Lieutenancy since January, 2018. In the latter role he contributed significantly to “the Living Stones”. st

Born in North Belfast in 1956, evidence of his gifts did not delay in coming. Head

Boy at St. Malachy’s College, where his already strong faith was further nourished, he went on to read economics at Queens University and served a two year stint as President of the Students Union (1978-80).

Coming to Dublin in 1980, he joined what was to become one of the “Big Four” international accountancy practices. Within ten years he became a Partner, His entrepreneurial flair led him on to gain very considerable stature within the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors both in Ireland and internationally, with particular expertise in clinical research organisation. He put his expertise at the service of the national economy when appointed a director of the IDA in 2000, serving thru’ 2010.

Parallel with his financial acumen came more gifts, laced with generosity and commitment,-a gift of

helping others, a gift of voluntarism and philanthropy. He was also a patron of the arts. He gave significant service to the Voluntary Hospital sector, in turn a director of St. Vincent’s Hospital and also The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. He became Chairperson of The Mater on 1st January 2015, making an enormous contribution in his single-minded pursuit of its mission and ethos. He was Chair of the Ireland East Group of hospitals.

Few will be aware of the extent of his generosity to his Church and to many beneficiaries of his personal

help and kindness. He had a warm demeanour and personal charm. He had the ability to meet difficult challenges and decisions thru’ seeking consensus with his deeply irenic style. It is difficult to give adquete justice in summing up his multifaceted personal and private characteristics in a single statement. Our hearts go out to Deirdre, his wife, to his daughters, Jennifer and Rebecca, and to his son, Mark, for whom his loss is irreparable.

His busy world has hushed. He now knows the mission he was given. The manner of his life gives fitting evidence that he will be justly and generously rewarded by his Lord. May he rest in that peace.

On December 21

1917 at the Mount of Olives, on that very site where Christ wept before his crucifixion, Fr Kavanagh heard that a wounded soldier was asking for a priest. He went forward in full view of the enemy, spoke to the man, made the sign of the cross and was shot by a Turkish sniper.

The letter informing the Jesuit Provincial of his death was written by an officer he had received into the Church just days earlier. He is now buried in the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery on the same Mount of Olives. st

Our new Chancellor

Gearóid Williams, KCHS, a solicitor by profession, is a Treasurer of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Kilrush. He is a member of West Clare Mental Health Association and he sits on the Board of Management of Kilrush Community School.

Gearóid is also former President of Kilrush Chamber of Commerce. In his leisure time Gearóid enjoys playing golf and in February 2018 was appointed Captain of Doonbeg Links Golf Club at Trump International Golf Links Doonbeg. Gearoid was admitted to the Order in 2013 and has served on Council since January 2018.

Most members should, by now, have received a letter from him concerning membership at the commencement

of May. We need new members to ensure that there are future “ambassadors of the Holy Land”. The membership process takes approximately 3-4 months from receipt of the application through approval by the Grand Master in Rome.

It is a mandatory requirement that applicants attend a briefing session. Please contact Gearóid if you have any questions or need any assistance. His contact details are at the bottom of this page.

The 2020 Pro Terra Sancta Collection Postponed

Pope St. Paul VI, following the example of St Paul the Apostle, established a special collection on Good Friday to support the Mother Church of Jerusalem. Since then, with the help of Catholics all over the world, the help necessary to support the various charities for the Christians of the Middle East and to continue to keep the Holy Places alive has reached the Holy Land.

The

Holy Father has granted, for this year, the postponement of the Good Friday Collection to 13th September 2020, the eve of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross which recalls the Dedication of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in the 4th century. Members might consider encouraging their local parishes to participate in this collection.
