Sofia Perini Portfolio

Hi! I'm Sofia. I'm Italian, but at the moment I'm based in Seville. I studied Architecture at the University of Ferrara. I'm overthinking and dreamer. My work is my hobby. I use my passion and creativity in all assignments. I'm often influenced by disciplines that do not focus on architecture because I think they can offer answers to developmental problems. I am flexible, and I like to experiment with new tools, ideas, and styles. I always feel a restless desire to express ideas through the creative process. This Portfolio collects a selection of projects that I developed during the last years, alone and in a team, from Academic to job experience.

Master Thesis Project

EmpĂria

Time is the enzyme that ignites the chemical reaction with the city. Time serves to get lost, allowing you to savor the space, the hidden places. This project is intended to be a set of looks. Those who use it have the opportunity to slow down and turn their eyes. The study area is the Lycabettus hill, whose strength lies in its central position, in the height that makes it inevitably landmark and in the vast green area that distinguishes it. The hill has characteristics that make it a place full of spirituality, where people are led to imagine, contemplate, think, and dream. The proposed emotional path allows accelerating, even more, the energy that pervades the area, favoring the estrangement from the real dimension. The project is located on the promontory as a place to experience the city and the hill itself. It is presented in levels.

The ascending route starts from the high densification of the city located downstream. Progressively the space of breath grows with altitude, vegetation replenishes ground, and the high buildings are profiled low below the level of the horizon until all that remains is the view of the sea and the closure of the sky. It is, therefore, a sort of journey towards change, where people have the opportunity to reconnect with the city, with themselves and with others in a succession of community spaces. The excavation of the path in the hill is intended to give users the opportunity to experience the hill from within, to know it from a different point of view; this is why the path is a tunnel that leads to an apparently empty underground public space, but in reality, that space is the breath of air after being underwater for a long time, a deep breath at the end of a walk-in which people's fears have the opportunity to let go. The path, however, expands into geometric rooms that surprising as the section has recreated the game of opposites. In these diaphragm rooms, on a programmatic level, temporary exhibitions

are hosted. In this way, the rooms are transformed into small rare gems, in which nothing is ever taken for granted. The final, massive, hemispherical section space, in addition to being a deliberate quote from the architect Aurelio Galfetti, represents the serenity that comes after a moment of agitation. After having walked through a long and narrow place, interspersed only sporadically with unusual spaces, we arrive at what can be called a haven to which we always return. For this reason, in the adjacent rooms, in addition to the vertical connections that allow continuing the journey, there are permanent exhibitions about the history and characteristics of the hill, the protagonist of the journey itself in the role of fantastic scenery. The underground route is meant to be architecture before being a function and wants to be experienced before being an episode of a moment. In addition to the above reasons, the ascensional path of the project starts from an underground space, dark, because notoriously to reach the light, you have to go through narrow spaces.

The program chosen for the project is linked to the recreational sphere of functions, as the basic principle is to emphasize the character of a place of the escape of the Lycabettus. It was decided to restore the sacred dimension eliminated, replacing it with an interreligious space, so that it could be offered to the entire community, and was also closely related to the sacred another strong dimension, that of culture, through the inclusion of a library. Among the most commercial functions, instead, are the hotel, the restaurant, and the spa — places for the well-being of the body and taste, framed by the panoramic view of the city. There is the access route which transforms from a pure function to an investigable space

Academic Project

Frazione M

The area of the ex-slaughterhouse and the excellars is a residual space close to the historic center of imola. The idea was to activate the current urban void by creating a dialogue between the historical center and the station, through two axes, and by giving a strong identity to the public space through the creation of a craft pole, to revive an Italian tradition. Urban areas recall the complexity of the contemporary city that the single piece hardly returns. Frazione M builds a union from a division, both from a functional and a formal point of view, as it relates to different urban levels within an area between the center and the periphery.

The connection point between the longitudinal axis and the transverse axis is the heart of the project. It is represented by the ex-slaughterhouse, which acts as a real hinge. It is a real social channeler with the function of a craft showroom, intended to welcome and aggregate people. The point of the connection takes place through an urban room, represented by a square, generated by a subtraction process. The resulting emptiness is a unique place of relationship and encounter, an open but covered space that allows access to both parts of the project.

Simulacrum

Simulacrum is the representation of an idea of a landscape; it is a non-faithful reproduction of the territorial reality, and for this reason, it aspires to continue it. It is a geographical device, at the same time compensatory and extensive of the landscape that is dissolving, of the rejected and recognized one. Simulacrum responds to the need for new lands that, over time, will become necessary due to the global temperature increase and the consequent sea-level rise (1 meter in 2100). Simulacrum is a model designed to establish a new relationship between earth, water, fire, air, and time. Simulacrum is a journey among the invisible communities of the Mediterranean, among the smaller islands, and among all the realities most exposed to the phenomenon of coastal erosion, depopulation, and the removal of essential portions of land.

Un luogo urbano

In the belief that the future of the city resides in its public spaces, we understand each project, rather than as an isolated object, as an opportunity to offer a new public space to the city. A space that through man becomes a place. An urban place. An architecture adapted to our cities, which response to the singularity and specificity of the place. The architecture belongs to the place where it is built. In our case, the new building will have to be in dialogue with the existing building, the old Lugano Slaughterhouse. A dialogue of urban resonances that must be expressed in a language that is not mimetic but not even breaking, instead of seeking a harmonious and coherent connection with the existing architecture, an analog relationship.

49

The innovative languages of modernity and those other consolidated languages of history interact, enter into resonance and become complementary languages seeking, in short, a certain physical and historical continuity. The new building rises on a public platform thus duplicating the exterior spaces that will allow to put in relation both constructions and proposing a new and intense focus of urban attraction. Both spaces are connected through a wide staircase that transcends its function of simple communication elements. Trying to find these analogy relations with the old building, the new construction in an exposed brick of similar color to that offered by the walls of the Slaughterhouse is proposed. Therefore the podium on which the building of rooms rests on a series of thick brick walls, which will house the uses most linked to the public. The generous elevated terrace, with views of the river landscape, is enriched by the presence of the two multipurpose rooms, which have this outdoor space as a mechanism of comfort and extension.

The experiences and knowledge acquired through exchanges, direct relations, and communication between students are no less important for the training of students than formal teaching in the classroom. For this reason, the proposal aims to give relevance to the presence of meeting spaces and relationships between students, beyond the classrooms and other more institutionalized spaces requested by the program of uses of the building. Work and rest spaces, interior and exterior, open or in contact with the gardens and nature, enclosures of great environmental quality, architectural and spatial. In this sense, large outdoor spaces surround the building, with different capacities according to program and orientations, thus providing it with dynamic and luminous facades.

60

The project is organized, on the base rectangle of the available plot, placing classrooms and laboratories, rooms, and offices of teachers on the facades, maintaining the central interior space reserved basically to the vertical communication systems and services. The proposal has pursued as its main objective to achieve that general, interior and exterior, powerful and homogeneous, bright and comfortable, able to coexist with naturalness both with the existing building, satisfactorily solving its connection, as with nature, and at the same time expressing its respect for the environment, within the limits imposed by its location, seeking greater energy efficiency without resorting to sophisticated active climate control systems or to machinery produced by the latest technologies, but with simple procedures, perhaps refined and updated, already experienced by tradition and memory.

Photography

In my spare time, I love to visit built architecture or just going around cities to discover exciting corners of them. To impress what I see through my eyes, I’m used to photographing a lot during my trips. In recent years I had the opportunity to travel a lot, and I had the honor to visit important buildings that change in some way my architecture vision.
