This 20-story building in the historic heart of Elgin is a mixed use building that will become the new focal point of the town. It aims to create a 0 connection to the local park and river nearby1 while 2 also addressing the suburban context.3 Residents will be able to enjoy views of the 4Fox river and 5 the town to the west. Each block (containing two 6 floors) has their own green terrace, where they can takeA a break from work or simply enjoyA the view. In B B addition to the residential and office spaces, the C C ground floor is designed to mimic the commercial D D side of Elgin to the west and become an extension E E of the local Fpark to the south side of the lawn. The use of green terraces outside each block to create a common area (on commercial floors) and personal (each apartment unit).

The building is split between different uses. Ground level and second floor (and mezzanine) are dedicated to reception, building services and retail.

From the fourth floor to the eight, it is dedicated to offices for rent. The next floor (Ninth) is the gym. From there, the next four blocks (8 floors) are dedicated to residential units wih each block containing one community room with its respective terrace. Each typical residentail floor contains eleven units. The penthouse floor is open plan for organzing events.

Wood louvers on east and west facades to bring some passive heating and cooling.

The base of the building represents the base of an obelisk. The ground floor is meant to be “hidden” from the south and west sides, so it blends better with its surroundings and it takes off some visual height from the building. The base that goes up to the lobby serves as a way to blend with festival park and the lawn, and bring in nature into the floor. It also serves as a public area for people to sit down and enjoy the outdoors with a view to the river.

The proposed site is a parking lot for grocery shopping and local businesses. We weren’t allowed to remove any of the shops, so the best place to fit the building was the northeast corner for easy accesibility.

The concept for this church came from a biblical verse. 1 corinthians 1:10. This verse talked about people being united in mind and thought. All paths lead to a community regardless where people are from. In this case, the auditorium is the meeting point of worship. It’s located at the center of the plan to show its rank and all the different entrances to the church lead to it. The form also came from an iteration of the catholic cross plan church.

SCOPE: Multi-unit house TYPE: Residential SIZE: 3,551 SF LOCATION: Chicago, IL COLLABORATOR: Samuel Berk Drawing samples from a New 2-story wood frame w/basement building. The house is to contain two dwelling units (basement and fist floor as one unit and second floor as its own.)

SCOPE: Two-story addition TYPE: Residential SIZE: 852+ SF LOCATION: Streamwood, IL COLLABORATED: Ryoka Matsuno Drawing samples from a 2-story addition to a single-family frame residence. The addition is to contain two new bedrooms, an office, and a bathroom that connects to the existing house.
