PROJECT: High Rise TYPE: Mixed use (Residential + Comm.)

SIZE: 200,000+ SF LOCATION: Elgin, IL CLASS: Integrative Architectural Design Studies II

CONCEPT This 20-story building in the historic heart of Elgin is a mixed use building that will become the new focal point of the town. It willl be the tallest building in Elgin ping the monumental Elgin tower standing at 200 ft. It aims to create a connection to the local park (Festival Park) and river (Fox River) nearby while also addressing the suburban context to the east.

Residents will be able to enjoy views of the Fox river and the town to the west. Each block (containing two floors) has their own green terrace, where they can take a break from work or simply enjoy the view. In addition to the residential and office spaces, there is a gym on the middle floors to serve both the tenants and the residents. The ground floor is designed to mimic the commercial side of Elgin to the east and become an extension of the local park to the south side of the lawn.

SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES The use of green terraces outside each block to create a common area (on commercial floors) and personal (each apartment unit)

PV Panels on spandrel facade to generate some percentage of electricity.

Wood louvers on east and west facades to bring some passive heating and cooling.

CONCEPT NATIONAL ST

The concept for this church came from a biblical verse. 1 corinthians 1:10. This verse talked about people being united in mind and thought. All paths lead to a community regardless where people are from. In this case, the auditorium is the meeting point of worship. It’s located at the center of the plan to show its rank and all the different entrances to the church lead to it.

The West Dundee library is designed to be a community center. The plot is located in what currenty is a parking lot surrouned by a strip of restaurants to the north and mostly residential to the other sides. It’s a play between two broken up masses connecting through a glass atrium. One side of the library accommodates the “louder side” of the program, while the other end holds the “quieter side”. The atrium works as a transitioning as well as welcoming space between the two.

The shape for the library comes from splitting the main mass into two blocks, shifting them opposite ways and locating the longest facades south to north to receive the most day light. The center mass or atrium serves as a focal point.

It is higher than the other masses to emphasize the hierarchy.

The entrances on the ground floor located in the south-north axis are for pedestrians, while the main entrance located south is accesible by car. The first floor also hosts a Lecture Hall for 150 people, a cafe and community rooms. The east wing of the first floor works as the administrative side. The second floor hosts most of the books. The computer lab and the study rooms are located on the west wing. The third floor is a space for people to sit down and study, as well as an entrance to the terrace facing east.
