A few of our cover girls have previously modeled; still, most never posed (except for a selfie) until they built up enough confidence to contact us through a text or email.

While you’re deciding, we hope you’ll watch others, month after month, live out their dreams as we offer a great opportunity and experience for the beautiful and courageous.

privilege

A MISUNDERSTOOD ADVANTAGE

Throughout today’s social and political discourse, the word “privilege” has been vilified and loaded with judgment. Once a neutral descriptor of advantage, it has taken on a sharply negative tone, primarily when used to highlight disparities in race, class, or opportunity. Yet, privilege itself is not inherently shameful or immoral; it is a condition of advantage. When honestly recognized for its intrinsic value, it has been and will continue to be a powerful force for good and positive change.

Privilege begins the moment someone is born into favorable conditions, whether it is wealth, educational opportunities, safety, or social capital. It’s not earned at the outset, but rather, it’s the luck of the draw—an unexpected gift or prize that comes to an unsuspecting child. Privilege is inherited, passed like a baton from one generation to the next. Parents with access to good education and a stable income are more likely to provide the same for their children, forming a cycle of opportunity that reinforces itself unless, of course, the children aren’t taught respect and responsibility. Privilege rolls on a continuum; families over the past three, four, or five generations have created legacies that did not previously exist. Through internal motivation and external effort, many have built and provided their families and loved ones with incredible opportunities that will enhance and improve their lives and futures. At the same time, the number of trust-fund babies and the ‘oldmoney’ crowd has dwindled significantly, giving way to a new order.

Unfortunately, inheritance is often misunderstood or resented; those who exhibit the built-in benefits are easy targets by the less advantaged. Frequently, the public views privilege as undeserved and believes it should be taken away or ridiculed. A near-perfect example of financial assault is the advent of a ‘Millionaire’s Tax.’ Biased and discriminatory, it wages an economic war against a group of people who work diligently while exercising their financial capabilities to meet the prerequisites that build a capitalist economic system. Oddly, this legislation is created by those who fit the label or are inspired to become privileged.

One is left to believe the derogatory call-out on fortunate citizens is based entirely on optics and ‘get out the vote’ motives. Rather than incentivizing citizens and showing them a means to improve their situations, extreme political policies have chosen to attack an easy target, with the justification that those who have achieved any means of success are guilty of an imaginary crime against others. Today’s narrative reveals an acceptance of the view that the privileged, either through inheritance or earnings, engage in the oppression of others, which was once true but no longer applies. The pendulum has returned to the center and deserves recognition. THOUGHTS FROM

Resentment obscures an important truth: privilege is often accompanied by hidden responsibilities. To possess it and continue its legacy is essential, but it can also be difficult. It’s crucial to be respectful and realize that today’s opportunity had to begin somewhere and with someone who, in the broader sense, recognized its future leverage, broader benefits, and value to society. Realistically, from the beginning of time, someone has always been a rung above another; it is human nature to strive for success.

Unfortunately, privilege is often taken for granted rather than cultivated. Some who inherit money and access become complacent, mistaking fortune for personal merit. Over time, this can diminish its impact. When generations forget the sacrifices that created their comforts, a sense of laziness and entitlement can set in. As a result, privilege not only loses its power—it becomes resented by some and squandered by others.

Despite its flaws, privilege need not be condemned. It can serve as a vehicle for change when used purposefully. Privilege funds nonprofits, supports hospitals, sponsors the arts, museums, and theaters, creates and finances scholarships, and, if you haven’t noticed, opens doors and advocates for those without a voice. When viewed as a platform rather than a pedestal, it allows many more than you might realize to create opportunities rather than hoard treasures.

The conversation around privilege must be put on the table, as seen here. Still, more importantly, it must evolve rather than using the term to divide local communities and the nation as a whole. We can redefine this negative movement into a positive call to action. The topic and the many intricacies defining privilege shouldn’t be about guilt but, instead, speak to awareness and education. We understand why this tool of divisiveness exists; it serves as an impenetrable catalyst to maintain power and control among the very people who believe their representatives are protecting them. In some sense, it is more a convoluted strategy than a plan of action. What is required is sensibility, stability, and progress in healing our social ills.

Privilege shouldn’t be categorized and shamed but instead recognized for its role in fostering and supporting stewardship. Yet, no matter how much these generous people do for others, they are continually degraded and viewed as a symbol in need of retribution for all life’s challenges.

Recognizing one’s privilege should not be a source of discomfort or apology; far better would be to focus, albeit difficult when being attacked, on continuing the good work and generosity that shapes our world while offering insight into why the public needs to reframe the subject and accept the fact that without our class structure, we would be destined to a uniform and unpleasant existence with those of privilege being replaced by a new group seeking the same status. The Golden Age: Once-in-a-Century Wealth Opportunities in the Era of Exponential Technology

In the late 19th century, the Gilded Age served as a crucible of modern wealth—a time when titans of industry transformed steel, oil, and railroads into generational empires. Names like Carnegie, Rockefeller, and Vanderbilt are synonymous not just with opulence, but with vision. They saw the future forming—and they were the first to move.

Today, we stand at the threshold of another seismic shift. A ‘New Golden Age’ is unfolding—not forged in iron and oil, but in silicon, algorithms, and airspace. At this moment, savvy investors have a chance to ride the crest of technologies that will reshape civilization over the next decade and beyond.

In this piece, we unveil the 21st century equivalents of the railroads and telegraphs of yesteryear—and why those paying attention now could achieve generational prosperity.

As regulations evolve and air taxi networks emerge in cities REDEFINING LUXURY THROUGH INTELLIGENT CAPITAL INVESTMENTS

A SKYWARD FUTURE: FLYING CARS AND AIR TAXIS

Once relegated to the pages of science fiction and familiar children’s cartoons (think The Jetsons), flying cars are finally taking to the skies; literally. Companies like Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY) and Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR) are pioneering electric vertical lift-off and landing vehicles (eVTOLs), poised to disrupt short-haul travel, bypassing congested roads and infrastructure with urban air mobility.

Backed by heavyweights such as Toyota, United Airlines, and NASA, eVTOLs are no longer speculative pipe dreams but a soon-tobe reality. These companies are currently conducting test flights, with commercial operations anticipated by 2025. Such easy access and their affordable stock prices allow today’s investors the opportunity to replicate being an investor in the Model T before Ford Motor Company went public.

such as Dubai, Los Angeles, and Tokyo, early investors in these technologies may see outsized returns. Many of these cutting-edge equities can be had for around the same investment as that latte in your hand, but don’t become complacent; these low-valued entry points may not last for long.

DRIVERLESS CARS: THE NEXT INFRASTRUCTURE BOOM

The next transportation revolution is also happening on the ground. Companies like Waymo (Alphabet), Cruise (GM), and Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) are turning autonomous driving from a novelty into a standard. The market for driverless vehicles is projected to exceed $1.5 trillion by 2030, a projection that is only a few years away. However, the numerous investment opportunities aren’t just about cars; they encompass data, logistics, urban design, and a redefinition of mobility.

Consider NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA)—it’s not just a chipmaker, but the backbone of artificial intelligence that powers the neural networks of autonomous vehicles. As these cars generate terabytes of data daily, the infrastructure that supports them (AI chips) cloud systems, and 5G networks becomes a goldmine where the smart money has already taken positions.

NVIDIA has experienced a meteoric rise due to its dominance in GPU technology for AI and gaming; it is arguably the defining stock of this era, akin to Standard Oil in the 1880s. It can be considered the pick-and-shovel investment of our digital gold rush. Still, there are numerous (so-called experts) who cast a cold shower on the stock, causing many to shudder at the thought of adding it to their portfolio. As of this writing, my return on NVIDIA is an impressive 130 percent as of mid-June, and I believed I was late to the party. Such a significant return is indicative of buying when others are selling; it’s a testament to tuning out the noise from the crowd, who are often found coalescing in a state of panic. Back in April, when the sky was falling for some, others treated it as the most critical buying opportunity of their lives.

QUANTUM COMPUTING: A PARADIGM SHIFT IN PROCESSING POWER

If AI is the electricity of this age, quantum computing is the nuclear fusion on the horizon. Companies like IonQ (NYSE: IONQ), Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ: RGTI), and Alphabet are racing to develop machines that can process data at speeds previously unfathomable to classical computers, sending us into a new realm of reality.

Quantum breakthroughs promise to revolutionize pharmaceuticals, cryptography, logistics, and finance. It’s not a matter of if, but when. And with that inflection point will come wealth that will dwarf what was achieved during the internet boom.

Early-stage investments in quantum technology companies carry volatility—but then again, so did risky and unproven industries

launched in the 1880s. The asymmetrical upside potential is where true fortunes are made by those willing to take risks and tolerate a rollercoaster market that is not for everyone.

MORE ON NVIDIA: THE POWERHOUSE BEHIND THE NEW ECONOMY

While startups blaze trails, NVIDIA has entrenched itself as the arms dealer of exponential tech. Its chips aren’t just in AI and autonomous cars—they are the foundation for generative AI models, data centers, and even cryptocurrency mining.

In 2024, NVIDIA became the third U.S. company to cross a $3 trillion market cap. Yet many analysts believe this is only the beginning. As AI adoption spreads through industries—healthcare, defense, finance—NVIDIA is positioned to capture more value than perhaps any tech company since Microsoft in the 1990s.

For those investing in NVIDIA, there is a chance of feeling like you should have reacted earlier, but that wouldn’t be entirely true; many indicators and prognosticators project its stock price to keep momentum as it continues to perform and meet the need for greater speed and capacity.

Investing in newer companies is a lesson in strategy and insight, the ability to see decades into the future. Think of it: railroads and oil companies are still making investors money after all these years. Beyond today’s struggle to generate power, the energy required to run data centers and similar facilities highlights a need for the expansion of nuclear power plants, which will, in turn, make investors relatively wealthy for the next century.

Remember, it’s not always about being first, but instead, being correct with an eye on the future.

BEYOND THE OBVIOUS: AI INFRASTRUCTURE AND ENABLERS

Our Golden Age is also giving rise to a constellation of adjacent opportunities—AI infrastructure companies like Palantir (NYSE: PLTR), cloud providers such as Snowflake (NYSE: SNOW), and cybersecurity giants like CrowdStrike (NASDAQ: CRWD). These firms form the connective tissue of tomorrow’s smart society, offering protections that continuously evolve; their development and expansion don’t have an artificial end date.

VISION AND ACTION DEFINE GENERATIONAL WEALTH

History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme remarkably well. The Gilded Age was defined by those who dared to imagine and act on a radically different future. Today’s innovators are not building railroads or factories requiring manual labor; instead, they’re building neural networks, quantum grids, and autonomous flight paths.

Today’s advancements are not limited to a technological revolution; more importantly, they represent a societal shift or, even more accurately, a civilization-scale pivot. For those watching closely, investing wisely and holding patiently could reap financial rewards unequal to historical standards. We are approaching an era of many more millionaires, billionaires, and a predictable five soonto-be trillionaires.

Welcome to the New Golden Age. Let your capital take flight just as you will in the very near future. H

A Sanctuary Reimagined

BY STEVEN CHAN

Hidden behind a veil of lush landscaping, where the rhythmic sound of water trickles from well-fed sprinklers and the whisper of a breeze rustles well-tended hedges, stands a home that is not merely a place to live—but a statement of intentional living.

This fully renovated 1946 Cape Cod classic seamlessly blends traditional architecture with modern luxury, offering a rare oasis of serenity, sophistication, and style in one of the area’s most sought-after locations in Marion, Massachusetts.

Every detail of this 4,136 square-foot residence has been reimagined with purpose, from its smartly integrated technology to its sumptuous finishes, creating a space equally suited for private family life and lavish entertaining. And while the exterior retains the unassuming charm of a traditional New England Cape, step inside, and the transformation is nothing short of breathtaking.

A MASTERPIECE IN COMFORT AND DESIGN

Thoughtfully updated and magnificently maintained, the home’s layout accommodates today’s dynamic lifestyle while paying homage to its mid-century origins. Anchoring the first floor is an expansive primary suite—a true retreat—featuring gleaming hardwood floors, a walk-in closet with custom cabinetry, and private access to an outdoor shower that feels more like a spa ritual than a rinse. Here, the seamless blend of indoor and outdoor living begins in earnest.

Upstairs, three generously sized bedrooms provide private sanctuaries for family or guests. Each boasts cozy wall-to-wall carpeting, oversized bay, and bow windows that flood the rooms with natural light, as well as ample closet space—two with walk-ins. Two well-appointed bathrooms featuring stone and ceramic tile flooring serve the upper level, offering both functionality and elegance in equal measure.

ELEVATED ENTERTAINING SPACES

The main level flows gracefully through a sequence of sunlit rooms defined by rich hardwood flooring, handcrafted cabinetry, and warm, welcoming textures. The living room, with its sculptural bay windows and wood-burning fireplace, invites casual evenings with a glass of wine or a quiet morning read. A custom wet bar adds a dash of swank to the otherwise relaxed space— perfect for hosting with flair.

Adjacent to the formal dining room, it delivers a timeless ambiance, whether you’re enjoying a candlelit supper or a lively Sunday brunch. French doors open into the family room, creating an inviting transition between formal and informal zones. Here, tailored built-ins, another crackling fireplace, and garden-facing views cultivate a sense of grounded luxury.

The heart of the home—the kitchen—combines culinary function with aesthetic polish. Granite countertops, a generous island, and top-tier appliances (including a gas range and wine refrigerator) complement the custom-built cabinetry and walk-in pantry. Whether whipping up a family meal or catering an event, this kitchen inspires culinary creativity.

OUTDOOR LIVING: YOUR PRIVATE OASIS

Perhaps the most unforgettable element of this home is its outdoor experience—an entertainer’s dream, a gardener’s joy, and a place of profound relaxation. Step into the professionally designed backyard, and you’ll understand why this home is more than its square footage. The property’s .42 acres have been transformed into a private Eden, complete with mature plantings, a fully enclosed fence for privacy, and an irrigation system sustained by a discreetly placed well.

The bluestone patio, bordered by lush greenery and shaded by ornamental trees, sets the stage for intimate dinner parties or starry nights of storytelling. A majestic stone fireplace commands attention, exuding warmth and grandeur in equal measure. Adjacent, a bubbling hot tub invites year-round enjoyment, while the three-season porch offers a perfect perch for savoring morning coffee or evening cocktails.

The grounds themselves are a masterpiece—professionally landscaped to evoke both control and wild beauty. There is a sense of harmony in every bed, every pathway, every bloom. It is, without a doubt, an outdoor experience few homes of this scale can offer—one that elicits peace, joy, and a feeling of escape.

TAILORED AMENITIES AND HIDDEN LUXURIES

Every inch of this residence was designed with the modern homeowner in mind. The attached heated garage, with workshop space and side-facing access, provides ease and flexibility. A total of four fireplaces, located across the main living areas and primary suite, offer warmth and ambiance, regardless of the season.

Practical amenities abound, including central air conditioning, radiant and hydronic air heating, a central vacuum system, and security features that provide peace of mind. The laundry room is conveniently located on the main level, featuring ceramic tile flooring and built-in storage.

Below, a full basement with interior entry and garage access offers additional storage, creative space, or future finishing opportunities. Whether you envision a game room, wine cellar, or media retreat, the possibilities are endless.

THE ESSENCE OF VILLAGE LIVING

Location remains a defining factor in luxury real estate, and this property delivers on that promise. FRIEND OR FOE?

The Modern Struggle to Find Love in an Age of Disconnection

By all accounts, finding love should be easier today than ever before. Technology connects billions of people with the tap of a finger, with gender roles no longer as rigid as they have been in the past.

Women have unprecedented freedom, and men are more aware of the importance of emotional openness; yet, for many, romance feels increasingly elusive, if not unattainable.

As modern life redefines everything from careers to communication, it’s clear that romantic relationships haven’t escaped an upheaval. The timeless pursuit of connection is destined to navigate a cultural landscape full of friction, confusion, and unmet expectations. In this new world, an unanswered question looms: Are men and women becoming allies in love—or adversaries in disguise?

Welcome to the complicated era of modern romance, where the line between friend and foe is often blurred.

THE

MALE PERSPECTIVE: LIVING IN SILENT FRUSTRATION

Research indicates that men across cultures are reporting growing disillusionment with dating and relationships. Surveys and social conversations reflect a chorus of recurring themes. One

of the most common complaints is a deep-seated sense of being underappreciated. It seems that many men feel their contributions— whether emotional, financial, or practical—go unnoticed or underappreciated. They’re expected to be providers, protectors, and partners, yet they often receive little validation in return.

Another key complaint, which is difficult to believe in today’s world of physical openness, is sexual dissatisfaction. In long-term relationships, men frequently report a decrease in physical intimacy. For many, this isn’t just about sex—it’s about feeling desired and emotionally connected. When intimacy fades, so too does the sense of partnership.

Males also express frustration with criticism, whether it concerns their appearance, ambition, or emotional expression. This slight is found to be especially true with digital dating, where superficial standards and unrealistic expectations prevail.

Are men meant to be assertive or sensitive? Traditional or modern? Providers or co-equals? The lack of clarity leads many to disengage altogether. Add to that the emotional deflation of dating apps—where messages go unanswered, and rejection is frequent—and it’s no surprise that many men are quietly bowing out of the search for love.

In conducting an impromptu survey, we found that among a

sample of young men aged 21-35, nearly 50 percent claimed they are unattached because they have no interest in ‘playing the game.’ Also, noting that dating is ‘too expensive.’

THE FEMALE EXPERIENCE: EXHAUSTED BY THE LOAD

On the other side of the gender divide, women are also voicing a sense of romantic fatigue—but from a different angle.

Among their concerns is the emotional unavailability of potential partners, and despite social shifts, many women find that men struggle to open themselves up, communicate effectively, or express vulnerability. This point holds validity; without emotional depth, relationships often stall or collapse under the weight of superficiality.

According to females, the invisible workload they carry in relationships is equally taxing. Emotional labor—encompassing planning, checking in, managing social calendars, and recognizing unspoken needs—is often thought to be disproportionately handled by women in relationships.

Despite gains in workplace equality, the domestic and emotional scales remain unbalanced at home; however, the caveat seems to be situation-specific, if not also age-related. From the above, we can infer that the complaints are related to individuals with children who require guidance and supervision rather than women seeking casual dating.

The dating scene brings its own set of grievances. Women frequently encounter men who avoid commitment, ghost after months of dating, or engage in emotionally ambiguous “situationships.” Many women describe this as emotionally draining and disorienting, yet men echo these same complaints about women.

Then there’s the matter of objectification. Far too often, women report feeling evaluated solely on their appearance or age rather than their intellect, humor, or compatibility. The search for genuine connection becomes clouded by the pressure to present a curated, attractive version of themselves—leaving little room for authenticity. Here, we find another point of contention; it is well known that females evaluate their counterparts based on physical appearance and establish a hierarchy based on hypergamy when selecting a mate. It’s a sword with both sides of the blade sharp and bright.

And in a world where ghosting and manipulation are common, safety and trust remain ever-present concerns. For many women, modern dating is not just a matter of disappointment—it’s wrapped in a cloak of self-preservation.

TECHNOLOGY: THE PROMISE AND THE TRAP

If dating apps promised convenience and connection, they’ve delivered something far more complicated. While they offer more access than ever before, they’ve also changed the nature of attraction, dating, and, unfortunately, fraud.

With endless swiping, users develop what psychologists call the “paradox of choice.” When options are unlimited, commitment becomes harder. People fear settling, also known as the fear of missing out (FOMO) on the best available choice. Their search for a near-perfect match becomes never-ending, leaving a genuine connection to take a backseat to the next swipe.

Statistically, a small percentage of users—typically those who place the highest on the attractive scale—receive the majority of attention. Such reinforcement breeds inequality and resentment among those facing lower matches and responses. The top-tier candidates are inundated with attention, fostering a sense of superiority or entitlement, which translates to economic dysphoria,

where millions of members pay higher sums for fewer matches. Only recently have the scale of dating sites become public. To combat this new information, many companies are touting their use of creating matches through algorithms and personality profiles. Yet, it always comes down to the visual aspect of a prospective mate.

The results indicate emotional fatigue, performative dating, and a sense that true compatibility is nearly impossible to find.

GENDER DYNAMICS:

ALLIES OR OPPONENTS?

At the heart of the modern romantic divide is a breakdown in mutual understanding. Men are feeling rejected and unneeded. Women often complain about feeling exhausted and being undervalued. Both struggle with communication, and both feel misunderstood.

What used to be a dance of courtship has, in some ways, become a battlefield of expectation. Who texts first? Who pays? Who commits? Who leads emotionally? All of this uncertainty breeds defensiveness, causing a retreat from conventional mating practices.

Still, beneath the frustration lies a more profound truth: men and women want love or at least feel like they are in love; this includes being seen, accepted, and supported. This disconnect is not due to a lack of desire—but rather a displacement of emotional tools, clarity, and a shared vision.

IS LOVE STILL POSSIBLE?

Absolutely; however, it’s going to look and feel different from what it did in decades past.

Instead of following outdated scripts, modern relationships are increasingly shaped by shared values, perceived value, politics, wealth, attractiveness, effective communication, and emotional reciprocity. Couples who succeed today are those who treat each other as equals—not just in financial status, but in effort, attention, and vulnerability.

At its core, love is still about partnership. What’s changing is how that partnership is defined and developed.

THE PATH FORWARD: REDEFINING ROMANCE

To move beyond the friend-or-foe dynamic, we need cultural shifts that foster collaboration over competition in relationships. It includes better relationship education—teaching communication, empathy, and emotional regulation as foundational skills.

To survive, we must revive the value of commitment—not as a relic of the past but as a conscious choice rooted in growth and mutual respect. Love doesn’t have to mean losing freedom; it can mean building something enduring with someone who champions your individual and shared potential.

Finally, we need to remember that compatibility isn’t about perfection—it’s about alignment. Shared goals. Similar pacing. Emotional availability. And above all, mutual effort.

A FINAL WORD

Love today isn’t gone—it’s evolving while testing everyone’s patience. And while the journey is more complex, it’s also richer with possibility for those willing to explore it honestly.

Men and women aren‘t natural enemies. But when fear, fatigue, and misunderstanding prevail, it can feel that way. The good news is that connection is still possible—deep, lasting, and meaningful— for those brave enough to ask not “Friend or foe?” but instead: “How can we become allies in love?”H

An Affair of Elegance and Heritage

For lovers of history, style, craftsmanship, and luxury, this weekend-long event is more than a spectacle— it’s an immersive celebration of elegance and heritage, offering an experience impossible to duplicate.

he stately avenues of Newport, Rhode Island, will again stir to the rhythmic cadence of hooves and the soft creak of leather and lacquered wood this summer. Against the backdrop of the Gilded Age mansions, a tableau of a forgotten era comes vividly to life. This summer, the world-renowned ‘Weekend of Coaching’ returns to the Newport Mansions—marking the 20th triennial celebration since its revival in 1968, attributed to David E.P. Lindh, who reinstituted the tradition. For a span of nearly 54 years (except during the COVID scare in 2021), the Preservation Society’s most ambitious acknowledgment and celebration of the Gilded Age and all its glory was rescheduled and held in August 2022.

For lovers of history, style, craftsmanship, and luxury, this weekend-long event is more than a spectacle—it’s an immersive celebration of elegance and heritage, offering an experience impossible to duplicate.

A RIDE THROUGH TIME: THE ORIGINS OF COACHING

Before cars and trains made their mark, the horse-drawn coach reigned supreme as the ultimate symbol of wealth, freedom, and social sophistication. Originating in Europe and quickly gaining popularity among the British aristocracy in the 18th and 19th centuries, Coaching was both practical and fashionable. Wealthy individuals would maintain private coaches and teams of horses driven by a coachman or—if one had the skill and status—by the gentleman himself.

Coaching as a sport became prominent in Victorian England, particularly under the influence of the Dashing Whips—noblemen who delighted in the challenge of maneuvering a four-in-hand coach through the countryside and city. This pastime migrated to America by the late 1800s; as wealth, affluence, and appearance became entrenched in the new American lifestyle, it became apparent that to exert a similar ‘boujee’ to complete with fellowmen of Europe, it was only natural that the lavish summer playground of Newport would adopt—or as some might say, ‘copy’ the use and sport of running coaches.

During its heyday, Newport’s wide boulevards and scenic ocean drives provided the perfect venue for fashionable coaching excursions. It was not uncommon to see finely dressed ladies and gentlemen rolling past the Atlantic coast or promenading

through Bellevue Avenue in custom-designed carriages drawn by immaculately groomed horses.

THE REVIVAL: FROM MEMORY TO MOVEMENT

By the mid-20th century, the art of Coaching had largely vanished. As automobiles and improved access to roads emerged, resulting in the shiny new objects becoming the new status symbols, this change in lifestyles left little time or space for the grandeur of horse-drawn excursions.

THE GILDED AGE OF TRADITION MEETS A GOLDEN AGE SPECTACLE

From August 15 to 17, Newport will once again transform into an open-air theater of motion, fashion, and form. Over three days, authentic 19th century coaches, driven by expert whips from around the world, will roll through Newport’s historic districts, past the Breakers, Marble House, and Rosecliff, each route chosen for its period-correct significance.

Public driving exhibitions, where guests can see the various coaches on display and learn about their history and construction, are always a highlight. Expect to see roof-seat breaks, park drags, and private drags, many of which are restored originals from the 1800s.

The Coaching Ball, typically held on Saturday night at one of the Newport mansions, is another dazzling fixture of the weekend. Dressed in black-tie or period costumes, guests enjoy a night of dancing, fine dining, and cultural camaraderie in settings that could rival Versailles. It’s the kind of event where every detail—from the polished brass lanterns of the coaches to the silk embroidery on gowns—is a nod to an age of civility and refinement. New for 2025, organizers hint at expanded educational sessions, including coach maintenance demonstrations, equestrian etiquette workshops, and special lectures on the history of transatlantic coaching culture. These immersive moments are expected to attract both scholars and style-seekers alike.

A LEARNING EXPERIENCE DISGUISED AS LUXURY

To the casual observer, the Coaching Weekend may appear to be an elite display of nostalgia, but beneath the concourse of equestrianled carriages lies a rare and tactile education in craftsmanship, horsemanship, design, and social history.

Each coach is more than transportation—it is a functional work of art. The woodworking, upholstery, and leatherwork are all preserved or restored using centuries-old techniques. Attending the event allows guests a chance to speak with artisans, drivers, grooms, and historians—each an expert in their field—offering insight into the discipline and care required to maintain these moving masterpieces.

Moreover, the weekend offers a glimpse into a time when travel wasn’t just a necessity but a symbol of taste, wealth, and leisure. It is, in essence, a masterclass in lifestyle history, offering valuable perspectives on how notions of status and comfort have evolved.

MEMORIES IN MOTION

For those fortunate enough to attend, the Weekend of Coaching is often described as a transformative experience. Visitors leave with more than photographs—they carry memories of sound and texture: the clatter of hooves on cobblestone, the gleam of sun on polished coach lamps, the rustle of taffeta, and the gentle scent of saddle soap and roses.

If you've already penciled in the dates, but need a bit more direction, we turn to Gary Ruff, the Associate Communications Manager at the Preservation Society of Newport County. We asked for his insight into how visitors can best understand and navigate the Coaching event from a practical standpoint.

New England News & Media: Hello, Gary. Thank you for this opportunity; let’s dive in. Could you please explain the significance of the Newport Mansion hosting such a prestigious event?

Gray Ruff: Newport is one of the most historically intact cities in America and is famous as a summer resort for the wealthy during the Gilded Age (approximately 1870-1910), with many mansions of that era still standing along Bellevue and Ochre Point Avenues. The families who spent their summers here were involved in coaching as a sport [and] as a way to display their wealth and “be seen” by other members of high society. Newport is the perfect place to keep this centuries-old tradition alive.

NENM: Can you share some of the highlights that people won’t want to miss and how they can experience ‘Coaching’ firsthand?

GR: The 12 participating coaches will drive on local roadways during the day on August 15, 16, and 17, including Bellevue Avenue and Ocean Drive. An itinerary of the driving routes and times will be posted at www.NewportMansions/Events shortly before the weekend begins.

NENM: Will the public be able to view an exhibition at one or more of the properties of the Preservation Society during the long weekend?

GR: All the coaches will give a driving exhibition on the back lawn of The Elms, at 367 Bellevue Avenue, on Saturday, August 16,

starting at 10:30 a.m. This event is free and open to the public. An expert on Coaching will provide narration. [Please note], Parking will NOT be available at The Elms.

NENM: As for watching them [the Coaches] in action, can you recommend any locations where the ocean will serve as a backdrop, allowing for photographs to be taken of the ‘Whip’ and their passengers while in motion?

GR: Brenton Point State Park, on Ocean Drive, is a great viewing point with a backdrop of the Atlantic.

NENM: Can you provide context to the types of Coaches visitors will be introduced to once they arrive?

GR: The two types of open-air vehicles used in the sport of Coaching—a Road Coach and the slightly smaller Park Drag— employ a team of four horses. All seating is outside, with the driver, known as a “whip,” sitting in the slightly elevated right front seat, and the whip’s wife or female relative taking up the “box seat” on the left. The rear bench of the coach holds at least two specialized footmen called grooms. Two center benches can hold up to 10 passengers.

NENM: Do guests need to purchase a separate admission ticket for Coaching, or is it included if they make a reservation for a tour of the Mansions?

GR: There is no ticket specifically for A Weekend of Coaching. Admission to the Newport Mansions properties requires a ticket or Preservation Society membership.

NENM: One final question many will have on their minds once they arrive: where will they find parking during the weekend?

GR: Parking is always a challenge in Newport in the summer. Brenton Point State Park has ample parking, but demand will be high. Otherwise, spectators wanting to see the coaches driving on public streets will need to find parking on side streets; beware, some of these streets are resident parking only.

NENM: Thank you for your time.

GR: You’re welcome. H

PLAN AHEAD

The Coaching weekend takes place from August 15-17, 2025, at Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island. For more information or to learn more about the Coaching Ball, Mansion Tours, the Coaches’ Driving Routes, and available Lectures, visit NewportMansions.org.

AN

OVERVIEW OF FIVE TRENDING DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS

Americans are no strangers to dietary supplements.

According to its 2024 Consumer Survey of over 3,000 U.S. adults, the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), the nation’s leading trade association for the supplement industry, found that 75 percent of Americans regularly take dietary supplements. Reasons include overall health/wellness, energy, immune support, and beauty enhancement, while a subtle shift toward specialty products such as ashwagandha (a botanical) continues to be seen. The results, says CRN, align with 2023 survey data and reflect “the enduring trust” people have in the industry.1

Users overwhelmingly say that dietary supplements are vital to maintaining their health and prefer them over prescription or overthe-counter medications whenever possible. Their median monthly supplement expenditure: $50.1

Among today’s dizzying number of available products, five supplements have been trending: colostrum, creatine, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin D.

What are they, and what does the research show?

COLOSTRUM

Colostrum is a mother’s first milk, produced during pregnancy, and plays a vital role in a baby’s developing immune system. Its rich contents include, among other nutrients, a high number of immunoglobulins (antibodies), growth factors, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Due to its high carotenoid content, it often appears golden yellow and is known as “liquid gold” for its distinctive appearance and benefits.

A specialty supplement, bovine colostrum (BC), is touted for potential health and performance benefits. Although it has been used in Ayurvedic medicine to support immunity and healing for millennia, research is still emerging on whether it can benefit more than babies. Results thus far have been mixed or shown minimal benefits, says the Mayo Clinic. Generally, small sample sizes have been used with doses higher than publicly available.2

Studies have shown improvements in gut health, immunity, athletic performance, and the prevention of diarrhea related to HIV and travel. For instance, BC may help to keep elite athletes from getting sick, improve leakiness of the gut lining (less permeability), reduce gastric symptoms related to celiac disease and colitis, and reduce gastric discomfort during physical exertion in hot, humid conditions.2

In two separate double-blind studies, 12 males engaged in heavy exercise were given BC for two weeks, then switched to two weeks without BC. BC supplementation showed a significant decrease in markers of exercise-induced intestinal injury and gut permeability.3

While the effectiveness and optimal dose of BC aren’t certain, its use appears to be safe.2

CREATINE

Creatine was first isolated from meat in 1832 and has become widely adopted in supplement form by athletes and fitness enthusiasts since the 1990s.

Creatine, typically in the form of creatine monohydrate as a supplement, is a naturally occurring amino acid-derived molecule commonly taken for enhanced strength or to increase speed.

IN THE SURVEY, REGULAR SUPPLEMENT USERS WERE MORE LIKELY TO ENGAGE IN HEALTHY BEHAVIORS THAN NON-USERS. DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS SHOULD ALWAYS BE VIEWED AS SECONDARY TO A HEALTHY DIET AND NEVER IN PLACE OF IT.

One of the most well-researched supplements, creatine monohydrate, is shown to increase muscle strength, power output, and high-intensity exercise performance while facilitating recovery. It does this by playing a key role in energy production, increasing muscle levels of phosphocreatine to aid in the regeneration of ATP (adenosine triphosphate)—the primary energy carrier in cells. It also increases muscle glycogen levels, promoting exercise recovery.

While creatine supplementation doesn’t build muscle, it can help to prevent sarcopenia, or age-related muscle and strength loss, when coupled with resistance training and a proper diet.4

Sports scientists say creatine isn’t an anabolic steroid and doesn’t affect testosterone, may not cause long-term water gain, doesn’t damage the kidneys at recommended dosages in healthy individuals, doesn’t cause dehydration or cramping, “appears safe and potentially beneficial” for adolescents under age 19, doesn’t increase body fat, can benefit all types of athletes such as through injury protection, can benefit both men and women, and is most effective as creatine monohydrate.5

In addition to helping prevent muscle and bone density loss as we age, creatine supplementation may also help our brains stay sharp and promote longevity, as the brain is a highly energyintensive organ. Research shows creatine may enhance brain function, memory, reasoning, and overall intelligence, particularly for older adults and vegans/vegetarians. A meta-analysis of eight randomized controlled trials (225 total participants, average age about 36, around 67 percent female) showed creatineenhanced memory in healthy adults compared to placebo, especially in those aged 66-76.6

A daily dose of three to five grams is considered safe for adults while loading up with higher doses shows no added benefits and may stress the kidneys.4

People with kidney disease should speak with their doctor before using creatine.4

MAGNESIUM

Magnesium is an essential mineral, meaning it’s “essential” that we obtain it through food and drink, as the body does not produce it. Regarded as a powerhouse mineral, magnesium is an electrolyte involved in over 600 chemical processes, from muscle and nerve function to blood sugar control and sleep.

According to the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) at the National Institutes of Health, daily magnesium need depends on

age and sex. Adult men are recommended to take 400-420 mg daily, while adult women are advised to take 310-320 mg daily. Foods high in magnesium include, for example, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and dairy products. Yet, research shows about half of Americans are deficient, which could lead to a number of disease processes.

Though signs of deficiency may include, tiredness, weakness, and muscle spasms, it’s common for people not to notice anything amiss. If eating whole, plant-based foods isn’t sufficient to reverse course, supplements are advised, such as magnesium citrate or glycinate.

Studies suggest that supplementation can be effective for overall health, as magnesium has a mitigating effect on inflammatory markers. In a meta-analysis of 17 randomized controlled trials (889 total participants, average age 46, around 63 percent female), compared to placebo, daily supplementation with 250 mg of magnesium oxide over 12 weeks showed a significant decrease in C-reactive protein and other inflammatory markers, like tumor necrosis factor, while increasing nitric oxide levels that can be heart-protective. (Studies link low magnesium levels with elevated risk of atrial fibrillation and heart disease.)7

The CRN survey found magnesium use has risen in popularity among supplement users, going from 19 to 23 percent between 2023 and 2024.

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS

Essential omega-3 fatty acids (EFAs) are healthy polyunsaturated fats that, like magnesium, must be obtained through diet. There are two types of essential fatty acids (EFAs): plant-based and animal-based. ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) comes from plants in foods like flaxseed, walnuts, and chia seeds. In contrast, EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) primarily come from oily, cold-water fish such as salmon and sardines.

EFAs play a vital role in cell structure and proper functioning and are most concentrated in the cells of the eyes and brain. However, they also support other areas, such as the heart and endocrine systems. EFAs lower triglycerides and raise HDL (“good”) cholesterol, which can decrease heart disease risk. They also may lower the risk of some cancers, Alzheimer’s and dementia, and age-related macular degeneration. While both sources are beneficial, seafood-source EFAs are superior to plant-source. The body converts ALA to EPA, then DHA, but the rate is very low.

Experts say there are global deficiencies in EFA intake, meaning people have less than eight percent EPA and DHA content in their blood, ascertained through an Omega-3 Index (O3i) test. To protect against disease, research suggests an O3i of at least eight percent is needed.

A systematic review of human studies published from 2004-2022 revealed that to achieve a sufficient O3i, whether through supplements or food, a daily intake of 1,000-1,500 mg of EPA and DHA as triglycerides—a typical can of sardines—is needed for at least 12 weeks.8

Cleveland Clinic notes that clinical trial results with EFA supplements have been mixed overall. They also say icosapent ethyl, a purified form of EPA derived from fish oil and available as the prescription drug Vascepa, shows the most promise in research for cardiovascular benefits.

More of a hormone precursor and technically not a vitamin, vitamin D (hydroxycholecalciferol) is produced by the liver and kidneys to regulate blood calcium levels for bone health. It also plays a vital role in healthy muscle and immune function. Vitamin D is obtained via sunlight, food, and supplements. Adults are advised to get 600 IU (international units) daily (800 IU for those over 70 years). Yet, modern life, with increased time spent indoors, especially in northern latitudes, has led to widespread deficiency and created a global public health problem.

A review of randomized controlled trials published between 2017 and 2020 showed the health effects of vitamin D3 supplementation. While supplementation was effective at preventing disease in situations of deficiency, like rickets, it provided no benefits in people “replete” with serum vitamin D of more than 50 nmol/L.9

A 25-hydroxyvitamin D test can determine current blood level, which can help determine whether supplementation is necessary. ODS states that a serum vitamin D level of 50 nmol/L (20 ng/mL) or higher is considered sufficient for bone and general health in healthy individuals.

Some researchers argue that the current evidence (as of 2024) suggests that daily supplementation with 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 is most effective in achieving and maintaining serum levels of at least 50 nmol/L. Large studies show that this dose can be safely sustained over several years to raise and maintain serum D3 above 50 nmol/L in virtually all individuals, and even above 75 nmol/L (30 ng/mL) in more than 90 percent of people.

According to ODS, adverse effects have been observed when D3 levels exceed 125 nmol/L (50 ng/mL).

WHAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU?

The CRN survey notes that more Americans are embracing the trend of personalized health solutions via qualified professionals. A good starting point in matching supplementation to one’s needs is to obtain a blood test for vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

In the survey, regular supplement users were more likely to engage in healthy behaviors than non-users. Dietary supplements should always be viewed as secondary to a healthy diet and never in place of it.

Conventional wisdom is to seek physician approval prior to use, especially to avoid possible medication interactions and to help tailor one’s program. H

Disclaimer: The information contained has been gathered from news reports from various media sources, interviews with political party affiliates, and viewing and analyzing the intent of the U.S. Constitution. We apologize if anyone is offended by our use of facts, truth, and common sense. We recommend reading the entire transcript for a comprehensive understanding of the topic and our interpretation of it.

All hell is breaking loose—here on the ground and in the air overseas. And even though we view much of it from afar (two wars are unfolding, one in its infancy and the other a grudge match between communism and freedom), neither shows signs of resolution; instead, they’re poised to escalate further.

Adding fuel to the fire, here at home, it’s all-out political warfare. Screens and the streets are filled with unrest and violence, much of it driven by professional agitators and rioters who appear to be pursuing a revolution on U.S. soil; however, more recently, on June 14, to be specific, thousands came out to voice their displeasure with the current Administration’s policies; some of which include cutting waste and corruption from government programs and departments and the enforcement of our laws and borders for collective protection.

It has been reported and confirmed that professional political organizations are behind the “peaceful” protests, rallies, and demonstrations, and they are directly and indirectly helping these groups through strategic funding and logistical support. Efforts include organizing events, providing transportation, legal defense, signage, marketing materials, and all necessary resources to mobilize large crowds. Behind this movement are Randi Weingarten, head of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), and Al Sharpton through his National Action Network (NAN). According to multiple media sources, it is estimated that left-wing political action groups invested approximately $2.1 billion to create the ‘so-called;’ “spontaneous anti-Trump protests” on National Flag Day. These protests were not organically grown grassroots campaigns but instead professionally organized in response to the President’s parade to show support for the 250th Anniversary of the U.S. Army.

As for those who have arrived on our shores and disregarded sovereign immigration laws and procedures by ‘skipping the line,’ there is a straightforward word that defines the act: Trespassing. Those offenders are not here legally and must face the consequences; they were not forced to come here; instead, they made a conscious decision to invade the country, and note,

when it is a few thousand, it can be called ‘sneaking in.’ When it is countless millions, the term invasion is rightfully applied. We know this because we see foreign flags raised above our own, defiling the memory of Americans who died defending the Red, White, and Blue.

These circumstances lead us to situations that seem to be causing conflict between citizens. It’s only right that the authorities continue rounding up and deporting non-citizens who are committing crimes. Still, there is also an issue of those who are not U.S. citizens but are attempting to thrive through opportunity. The primary focus, going unchallenged for both groups, is that, like it or not, they all have rights and protections afforded to them; however, the Administration is not accepting a Constitutional verdict as outlined in the document. This abrogation of duty sets a dangerous precedent. As violations continue, stirring like an undertow beneath the surface, we must acknowledge that massive demonstrations are a symptom of a more serious problem, and we need to find a viable solution so that calm can return.

With open minds and clear eyes, we began our investigation with the intention of neither excusing nor criticizing either political party or group, but instead, examining facts, questioning assumptions, and determining how immigration policy and civil rights align with the law of the land. From the outset, the objective was to uncover and disseminate the truth about being undocumented and what can be accomplished in righting a wrong from the last Administration.

Our research took unexpected turns—it wasn’t easy by any means, but we stayed committed to following the facts wherever they led. One glaring injustice we found is the improper procedures by which ICE currently carries out immigration enforcement. However, more critically, is the obfuscation for protecting the rights of far more people than expected—many of whom are legal residents or those with a valid visa. These alarming actions send a clear warning of how we, too, might be treated when due process is cast aside.

Very few would argue against arresting those who commit crimes. Dangerous offenders should, of course, be taken into custody. But casting a wide and indiscriminate net—one that

includes those with no criminal history—causes unnecessary harm and fear. It also creates division and paints entire communities with a broad, unjust brush.

We are not here to take sides. We’re using a scalpel to dissect the issue with care and precision and to raise awareness about what may be a serious breach of legal rights for all who reside in the U.S. This breach of the law is not just an immigrant issue; it’s an American issue—one that affects thousands who have been legally granted the right to call the United States home, and those waiting for final approval.

As always, our mission is not to win popularity contests but to report the truth. We’ve long said that any given article might only satisfy half of our readers, and we expect this to continue, especially with this article. There might be a surprising juxtaposition of our followers. Still, we view it as a stark reminder of how layered and complex this issue truly is and the importance of finding a timely resolution.

THE LAW OF THE LAND

It is widely known that Federal law supersedes state statutes. The White House has made it clear both before and after the recent election that if you are an illegal alien, as they call them, you may be apprehended and deported just for being in the U.S. as an unauthorized person.

Under this premise, we uncovered the following information for your review, understanding, and application.

Federal Law Supersedes State Statutes in Immigration:

The U.S. Constitution’s Supremacy Clause (Article VI, Clause 2) establishes that federal laws are the “supreme Law of the Land.” This principle, known as federal preemption, means that when federal and state laws conflict, federal law generally prevails over state law. In the realm of immigration, the Supreme Court has consistently affirmed the federal government’s broad and exclusive authority. While states can pass laws that affect immigrants, they generally cannot create their own immigration systems or laws that directly conflict with federal immigration policy. Such a decision means states cannot grant legal status that federal law doesn’t recognize, nor can they enact laws that undermine or obstruct federal immigration enforcement.

The Administration’s Position On Deportation for Unauthorized Presence:

Recent statements and actions from the White House have indeed emphasized a policy of robust enforcement of immigration laws, including the apprehension and deportation of individuals who are in the U.S. without authorization; it includes the following policies:

Prioritizing removals: The Administration has stated its intent to prioritize the prosecution of criminal offenses related to unauthorized entry or presence and to expedite removal proceedings.

Increased detention: There is an emphasis on detaining removable aliens pending the outcome of their removal proceedings. (being circumvented)

Eliminating perceived obstacles: The White House has indicated a desire to eliminate policies or practices that are perceived as hindering the prompt repatriation of individuals.

Encouraging self-deportation: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) openly discusses and provides information on “self-deportation” as an option for individuals who are unlawfully present.

Strong rhetoric: Public statements and official documents from the White House have often employed strong language regarding the need to secure borders and remove those who are unlawfully present. In essence, the current federal position, as articulated by the White House, is that unauthorized presence in the United States is a deportable offense, and the government intends to use its full authority to enforce immigration laws in this regard.

The question on most minds is, if you entered the U.S. illegally, do you have any of the same rights that a citizen is protected by? It seems it is a common misconception that individuals in the U.S. without authorization have no rights, which is not true. While their legal status limits certain privileges that citizens or legal residents possess, they are still protected by fundamental constitutional rights.

DETAILS OF PROTECTION

Rights of Undocumented Immigrants include (based on the U.S. Constitution and Supreme Court rulings):

Due Process: This is a crucial right. The Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments state, “No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.” The interpretation specifies that even undocumented immigrants have the right to a fair legal process and that they cannot be arbitrarily detained or deported without a hearing (although the specifics of that hearing can vary).

It Includes:

The right to be informed of the charges against them.

The right to present evidence in their defense.

The right to challenge the government’s case.

The right to seek relief from removal, such as asylum (albeit often abused).

PROTECTION AGAINST UNREASONABLE SEARCHES AND SEIZURES (FOURTH AMENDMENT)

Undocumented immigrants are protected from unlawful searches of their homes or belongings by law enforcement without a warrant or probable cause, similar to citizens. There are exceptions, like the “border search exception” within 100 miles of the U.S. border.

Right to Remain Silent (Fifth Amendment): They have the right to refuse to answer questions about their immigration status, place of birth, or how they entered the U.S.

Right to Legal Counsel: While the government is not always required to provide a lawyer in immigration proceedings (which are civil, not criminal, in most cases), undocumented immigrants have the right to hire an attorney to represent them. In criminal proceedings, they have the right to a governmentappointed attorney if they cannot afford one.

Right to Education (for children): The Supreme Court’s ruling in Plyler v. Doe (1982) established that undocumented children have the right to attend public K-12 schools.

Certain Labor Rights: Undocumented workers are still protected by labor laws, including minimum wage, overtime pay, and workplace safety standards. They also have the right to organize unions.

Emergency Medical Care: Hospitals generally cannot turn away individuals in emergency situations, regardless of their immigration status.

Protection against discrimination: The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, which applies to all persons in the United States, regardless of immigration status.

RIGHTS AND PROTECTIONS NOT INCLUDED, BUT ENACTED BY INDIVIDUAL STATES

Right to Vote: This is generally reserved for U.S. citizens. (Such an offense is well documented)

Right to hold certain government offices: (Same as above)

Unrestricted right to travel internationally.

Right to unrestricted entry and re-entry into the U.S.: They can be denied entry or deported.

Eligibility for most federal public benefits: While some exceptions exist for certain emergency services or programs for children, most welfare, food stamps, and non-emergency Medicaid programs are not available to undocumented individuals. (States have long been circumventing this restriction and spent billions of taxpayer dollars in providing these services)

Right to automatic legal status: Being in the U.S. for a long time or having U.S. citizen children does not automatically grant legal status.

Protection from deportation: As noted, unauthorized presence is a deportable offense.

As for prevention, interference, collusion, or assistance by a government official or U.S. citizen to prevent, avoid, or resist apprehension or arrest of a person suspected of being in the U.S. illegally can be charged with a Federal crime, as two judges recently found out and were arrested.

Here are the facts and details that will be presented at their hearings:

FEDERAL LAWS

The key federal law involved is 8 U.S. Code § 1324 —bringing in and harboring certain aliens. This statute makes it a crime to: Harbor, conceal, or shield from detection of an alien (non-U.S. national) knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that the alien has come to, entered, or remains in the U.S. in violation of law. Being a broad term and can include providing shelter, transportation, or even warning someone about an impending immigration enforcement action.

Encourage or induce an alien to come to, enter, or reside in the U.S., knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such coming to, entry, or residence is or will be in violation of law. Conspire to commit any of the above acts or aid or abet the commission of the above offenses.

Obstructing justice (18 U.S.C. § 1501 et seq.) or assaulting or impeding federal officers (18 U.S.C. § 111) are also relevant. If a person physically interferes with an immigration officer’s duties, they could face these charges.

OTHER KEY ELEMENTS FOR A CHARGE

For a conviction under 8 U.S.C. § 1324, the government generally needs to prove:

Knowledge or Reckless Disregard: The person knew or acted with reckless disregard that the individual is an alien who entered or remains in the U.S. unlawfully.

Intent to Facilitate Unlawful Presence: The action taken was intended to substantially facilitate the alien’s unlawful presence or prevent their detection.

EXAMPLES OF ACTIONS THAT COULD LEAD TO CHARGES INCLUDE

Physically blocking an ICE officer from making an arrest.

Hiding an individual from immigration authorities.

Warning a person that immigration officers are present or approaching with the intent to help them evade arrest.

Transporting a known unauthorized immigrant to help them evade detection.

Providing false information to immigration officers about an individual’s status.

Destroying evidence related to an individual’s immigration status.

PENALTIES

The penalties for violating 8 U.S.C. § 1324 can be severe, including: Fines.

Imprisonment (up to 5 years for basic violations, up to 10 years if for commercial advantage or private financial gain, and significantly more if serious bodily injury or death results).

Enhanced penalties apply for certain circumstances, such as transporting groups of 10 or more.

IMPORTANT DISTINCTION - SANCTUARY POLICIES

It’s important to differentiate between individual actions and sanctuary policies enacted by state or local governments. While the federal government has attempted to challenge sanctuary policies, courts have generally held that the Tenth Amendment prevents the federal government from compelling states or localities to enforce federal immigration laws. This view means states and localities can choose not to actively assist federal immigration enforcement (e.g., by not honoring ICE detainers), but this is different from an individual actively obstructing an arrest or harboring an unauthorized individual.

In essence, while individuals have rights, including undocumented immigrants, interfering with a lawful arrest or actively assisting someone in violating immigration law is a serious federal offense.

We went further and asked the question: Is it true that those states or locales calling themselves sanctuary cities or states that harbor and protect illegal aliens are committing a crime?

The results were not easily explained; being a highly debated and legally complex issue, the most straightforward answer we came up with was ‘no’; generally speaking, states or localities with sanctuary policies are not committing a crime under existing federal court interpretations.

Here’s why:

Sanctuary Policies Typically Do (and Don’t Do) The Following: Limit Cooperation, Not Obstruct: The core of most sanctuary policies is to limit the extent to which local law enforcement agencies voluntarily cooperate with federal immigration authorities (like ICE).

This often means:

Not honoring ICE detainers: ICE might ask a local jail to hold someone suspected of being undocumented beyond their release date on local charges so ICE can pick them up. Sanctuary policies often direct local jails not to honor these civil immigration detainers, especially if there isn’t a judicial warrant. Courts have repeatedly affirmed that these detainers are requests, not mandates and that honoring them without a warrant can expose local jurisdictions to liability for unlawful detention.

Not inquiring about immigration status: Local police may be prohibited from asking about a person’s immigration status unless it’s directly relevant to a criminal investigation.

Not using local resources for federal immigration enforcement: Local funds and personnel are prioritized for local crime-fighting rather than being used to enforce federal immigration law, which is primarily the federal government’s responsibility.

They Do Not Actively “Harbor” or “Conceal” in the Criminal Sense: Critically, most sanctuary policies do not involve actively hiding undocumented individuals from federal authorities or preventing federal agents from carrying out their duties.

Federal immigration agents (ICE, CBP) can still operate within sanctuary jurisdictions and make arrests. The local policies mean local law enforcement won’t actively assist them in specific ways.

THE ANTI-COMMANDEERING DOCTRINE (TENTH AMENDMENT)

The above are the cornerstones of the legal argument in favor of sanctuary policies. The Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states that powers not delegated to the federal government nor prohibited to the states are reserved to the states or the people. The Supreme Court has interpreted this to mean that the federal government cannot “commandeer” state or local officials to administer or enforce federal programs, including immigration laws. Courts have consistently ruled that the federal government cannot compel states or localities to use their resources to enforce federal immigration law. It is a fundamental principle of federalism and dual sovereignty and a primary reason why cities and states have largely been successful in challenging federal attempts to withhold funding or penalize them for adopting sanctuary policies. Federal courts have often found such attempts to be unconstitutional coercion or a violation of the separation of powers.

The Distinction from 8 U.S. Code § 1324 (Harboring):

The federal statute 8 U.S. Code § 1324, which criminalizes “harboring” or “concealing” undocumented immigrants, is generally applied to individuals or private entities who are actively assisting or hiding unauthorized immigrants. Courts have not applied this statute to state or local officials for simply declining to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. The intent behind “harboring” in the criminal sense is to actively prevent detection, which differs from a local government setting a policy regarding how its employees will interact with federal agencies.

In defense of the Federal Government, here are arguments and opposition to Sanctuary Policies:

While courts have generally upheld the legality of sanctuary policies based on the Tenth Amendment, administrations (like the previous Trump administration) and some legal groups have argued that: Sanctuary policies violate 8 U.S. Code § 1373, which prohibits state and local governments from restricting communication about immigration status with federal authorities. However, courts have also issued varying rulings on the constitutionality and application of § 1373.

They argue that such policies create a public safety risk by not fully cooperating with federal enforcement.

They sometimes assert that these policies implicitly “harbor” or “shield” undocumented immigrants by making it harder for federal agents to locate and apprehend them.

As for the current legal landscape, the battle over sanctuary policies has been extensive, with many federal court rulings generally siding with the ability of states and localities to limit their cooperation with federal immigration enforcement based on the anti-commandeering doctrine. While the federal government can take actions such as issuing lists of sanctuary jurisdictions or attempting to withhold funds, these actions have often faced legal challenges and been blocked by the courts.

The debate over individual rights versus the powers granted to the Federal Government runs hot and is obviously politically charged. Current legal interpretations and court precedents indicate that states and localities adopting sanctuary policies are generally not committing a crime by their action so long as their policies do not involve actively obstructing federal agents or criminally harboring individuals. They are exercising their Tenth Amendment rights to decline to assist in federal immigration enforcement, which is distinct from actively breaking federal law.

In conclusion, and yes, this is a complicated issue, but when all factors are effectively distilled, one solution remains solvent; as mentioned earlier, anyone illegally residing in the U.S. has the right to a hearing before being deported; unfortunately, this rule of law is being circumvented.

Based on our Constitution and the ‘Broken Window’ proposed by social scientists studying criminology, such a premise puts the rights of all citizens at risk as abuses of the rule of law continue and could expand into uncharted territory.

We conclude our findings. H

A Shell Of A Story

How The Quahog Became A Rhode Island Stuffie

AAlong the coastline of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, where fishing boats rock gently in the harbors and the scent of salt and seaweed fills the air, a culinary tradition endures in the humble shell of a clam, for this is the land of the quahog—a hard-shelled morsel of seafood that has been a staple of both diet and culture for centuries. And nestled within that shell is meat that contributes to one of the region’s most iconic dishes: the stuffie.

A SHELL WITH HISTORY

The word quahog (pronounced KO-hog) originated from the Narragansett word poquauhock, a testament to the clam’s deep-rooted ties to the Native American tribes of coastal New England. These indigenous communities harvested quahogs long before European settlers arrived, not only for sustenance but also for wampum—sacred beads made from the clam’s purple shell, which were used in ceremonies, storytelling, and trade. To the Wampanoag and Narragansett people, the quahog was more than just food—it was a currency of culture.

FROM SHORELINE TO HEARTH

When European settlers arrived in the 1600s, they quickly took to clamming, adding the hard-shell mollusk to their stews, chowders, and loaves of bread. Over time, quahogs became the backbone of the New England maritime economy, especially in towns like Narragansett, New Bedford, and Fall River. Quahogging—once done by hand in shallow estuaries—is still a common practice today, though many modern diggers now use long-handled rakes to harvest these treasures from the sandy seafloor. Despite its resilience and utility, the quahog wasn’t always glamorous. The largest clams,

often too tough to enjoy raw, were relegated to chowders or minced into meat mixtures. But out of this necessity, a working-class dish was born—one that has since become a New England coastal legend: the stuffed quahog, or more affectionately, the stuffie.

Stuffies are as local as it gets. Each one begins with a rinsed and scrubbed quahog shell, filled to the brim with a seasoned blend of chopped clam meat, breadcrumbs, and aromatics, then baked to golden perfection. While no one can pinpoint the exact origin of the dish, it likely emerged in the early 20th century from the kitchens of immigrant families—especially those of Portuguese, Italian, and Irish heritage—who stretched their seafood with pantry staples to create something hearty and satisfying.

The original stuffed shell recipe was simple and rustic: minced quahog meat, buttery breadcrumbs or crushed crackers, sautéed onions and celery, and often red or green peppers, with a bit of salt, black pepper, and a dash of paprika. Some cooks throw in a splash of clam juice or pork fat for richness.

As for any cherished regional recipe, variations abound. Some chefs add linguiça (a nod to Rhode Island’s strong

Portuguese influence), pork sausage, and even pepperoni has been known to be an essential ingredient. In contrast, others sprinkle hot sauce, grated Parmesan, and, most popular, a dollop of butter! Whatever the combination, the essence remains the same: local flavor baked in a half shell.

COASTAL COMFORT FOOD

Today, the stuffie is more than just a dish—it’s a point of pride, sold at seafood shacks, fine restaurants, and backyard clambakes alike. Most residents living along the coast consider it a rite of summer, served hot and brimming with nostalgia. Frozen stuffies can be found in local supermarkets, and homemade versions often appear at family gatherings and holiday meals.

And while chowder might be more widely known outside the region, ask anyone from Rhode Island and Massachusetts what they think of a stuffed quahog, and they’ll likely tell you: they’re the soul of coastal New England cuisine.

FROM TRADITION TO TREND

What makes the stuffie so enduring? Perhaps it’s the way it bridges land and sea, old and new, practicality and indulgence.

INGREDIENTS

12 large quahog clam shells (cleaned and rinsed)

1 cup chopped quahog meat

¾ cup your choice of protein (cooked & crumbled – sausage, linguiça, etc.)

1 ½ cups seasoned breadcrumbs

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 stalk celery, finely chopped

½ cup of chopped red pepper

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 tbsp butter or olive oil

½ tsp paprika

¼ tsp dried thyme

¼ tsp sea salt

¼ tsp black pepper

½ cup clam juice or broth

(adjust as needed for moisture)

Optional: hot sauce, lemon zest, or grated Parmesan or a slab of butter for topping

It’s a dish born of necessity, elevated by creativity, and sustained by affection.

In recent years, some restaurants have put their spins on the classic. Upscale versions may feature chorizo, pancetta, or artisanal cornbread. Vegan alternatives, such as those made from mushrooms or hearts of palm, have begun to appear on progressive menus. Yet even the most innovative versions still pay homage to the dish’s roots—a humble clam, baked with care, in the shell it came in.

MORE THAN A MEAL

The quahog and the stuffie are woven into the fabric of New England’s cultural identity. They remind us that even the simplest ingredients—gathered by hand from the tide’s edge—can tell a powerful story.

The next time you sit down to a hot, golden-brown clam-filled shell, take a moment to appreciate the journey it’s made—from the ancient hands that shaped wampum to the immigrant cooks who bake with love, to the ocean harvesters who still bring it ashore. It’s more than seafood—it’s a shell filled with history. H

Cuttyhunk Island

NEW ENGLAND’S MOST CHARMING AND UNKNOWN DESTINATION FOR A REJUVENATING DAY TRIP OR SERENE SUMMER HOLIDAY

Ihave to start by admitting—I’m not exactly thrilled to be letting so many of you in on my secret summer escape. By sharing the details of how to get there, including an itinerary, I know I’m giving up something I’ve long cherished: the joy of a quiet, uncrowded day on an island paradise. But hey, who am I to keep the best-kept secret in New England—and beyond—all to myself?

At worst, I’ll end up bumping into a few hundred new friends over the next few months. And who knows? Maybe a few of us will even go in on a cottage for a week or two next summer. I digress. Imagine this: it’s sunrise at South Station in Boston, and your mind is already adrift in the scent of salt air. You might not yet know what to expect, but you can easily picture yourself settling in for a smooth, effortless ride on the new SouthCoast Rail, delivering you to the historic New Bedford Seaport, where a safe, sturdy ferry awaits to carry you away—an early cocktail in hand. (A girl has to have fun—plus the Island is dry!)

Before long, you’re stepping onto the sun-warmed trails of Cuttyhunk Island, where honking horns and engine noise are replaced by the cries of gulls and the rhythmic splash of baitfish fleeing from hungry bluefish along the shoreline, a feeling of calm engulfs your senses.

FROM CITY RAILS TO COASTAL SAILS

Leaving Boston is a breeze and a pleasant experience; in about 90 minutes, you’ll be transferring to your Uber, which will take you to the M/V Cuttyhunk in under 5 minutes. Alternatively, you can bring your bike and ride over in about the same amount of time. Under your power is an excellent choice because both the train and the ferry can accommodate your wheels, but you need to confirm with the MBTA and make a reservation with the ferry people. Once loaded, the ferry departs the dock with a group of like-minded vacationers enthralled with the excitement of the 45-minute excursion and dramatic scenery once outside the harbor.

ISLAND TIME

With fewer than 50 year-round residents and no commercial buzz, Cuttyhunk is the anti-Nantucket, Hamptons, or other must-visit summer hot spots. Here, visitors come for quiet beaches (ask about Barges Beach, a short walk from the ferry dock, facing Gay Head Point on Martha’s Vineyard), historic sites, a museum, seafood shacks, and the kind of unscripted beauty that invites you to pause and relish in making such a wise decision. What some will appreciate about the lifestyle while others acquaint it with going cold turkey is that it is a laid-back (a very

laid-back) attitude encompassing all aspects of the Island. There is no need to rush for any reason, and you quickly learn no one is going to rush for you. However, there is one exception, and that’s when you need to meet the ferry and return to the mainland; you don’t want to miss it under any circumstances. The rooms are usually sold out, and the beach is strictly off-limits for overnight stays. Another enlightening experience that some find challenging to handle is digital disconnection due to the absence of cellular service. Sure, you might get a message or two depending on where you’re standing, but sending one out is not worth the time and effort, so enjoy the peacefulness while it lasts.

WHAT TO DO & NOT DO

The word of the day is ‘simplicity.’ Dressing down and being comfortable is considered ‘Island Vogue.’ There is no need to try to make an impression; it will be obvious and garner more than a few looks and eye rolls. It’s usually necessary to bring a sweater or something warm, as the return trip tends to be cooler.

Visit Barges Beach for a couple of hours, then tour the tiny shops found along the roadways, but watch out for the quick-moving golf carts, which are a principal means of transportation. Head over to the main dock for a bathroom break and a bite to eat; the food is ocean-fresh and unlike anything you’ve ever had before.

As for entertainment on Cuttyhunk, it’s pretty much contained to where the fishing guides come in with their catches and clean them. The impromptu event is not to be confused with washing them; rather, the ‘gutted’ (or, more politely, dressed) is a ritual intensely viewed by an inquisitive crowd licking ice cream cones. LOL! Indeed, I, too, have found myself captivated by an atmosphere of curiosity; oddly, it feels much like a movie set, which can be pretty surreal.

Explore, ride, or hike the trails; maybe capture the views from Lookout Hill. There are over 600-acres of preserved land to walk and spot wildlife. A word to the wise: bring tick repellent, as all the islands and coastlines have issues with them and require proactive efforts to maintain good health.

Expect a long day but the finest memories that will have you back year after year.

One visit can significantly influence your perspective on what matters most; it can also reset your internal clock while calming your mind.

Enjoy a retreat with family, friends, or the pleasure of being solo because there’s no duplicating a Cuttyhunk experience. H
