The University offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of disciplines in both campus and outreach settings.
William Woods University consistently has been ranked as one of the top 100 regional universities in the Midwest by U.S. News. The University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
William Woods offers exceptional opportunities for students to learn and grow, through unique degree programs, an engaging and personal campus community, life-changing experiences outside the classroom and a firstname relationship with faculty and fellow students that endures far beyond the classroom and long after the degree is earned.
Long a leader in education for working adults and professionals, William Woods University’s influence outside it physical campus is significant, providing quality graduate and undergraduate online degree programs to individuals already in the workforce who wish to advance their careers.
2 COMMENCEMENT 2024
ACADEMIC PROTOCOL AND PROCESSION
The Procession
Traditions relating to the academic procession of the university date from practices established in the academies and universities of Western Europe in the Middle Ages. At William Woods University, the procession is headed by the Marshal of the faculty, followed by the candidates for undergraduate degrees, candidates for graduate degrees, unranked faculty and staff, full-time faculty according to rank, professors emeriti, platform guests, and the President of the University.
The Ivy Ceremony
Although the actual history of the William Woods University Ivy Ceremony remains a mystery, common belief is that early senior classes first planted ivy on campus during special graduation programs. Since then, the planting ritual has evolved into an ivy ceremony in the fall for new students and an ivy chain processional in the spring for graduating seniors.
Participation in the Ivy Ceremonies bonds students to the traditions held fast in the hearts of all William Woods University alumni. As the ivy entwines itself, so will their lives be entwined with the lives of those around them. Every student on the William Woods campus is linked inextricably by the ivy bond, which symbolizes the development of friendships, goals, and common purposes. At graduation, the ivy chain will be severed, signifying that students are embarking on the next phase of their lives. However, ties to their alma mater will continue throughout their lifetime as an alumnus of William Woods University.
The Marshal
The Marshal is elected by the faculty to serve for the remainder of his/her tenure at William Woods University. The Marshal is responsible for all matters related to academic protocol and is charged with the organization and regulation of all academic processions and ceremonies. The Marshal’s regalia is unique to the institution and specially designed for the office.
The Mace
The ceremonial mace is the official symbol of the University. It is presented to the President by the Marshal to indicate that the University is assembled.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the President grants permission for the Marshal to lift the mace to signify that the recession may begin. The assemblage shall stand and remain standing whenever the mace is in transit.
Flags and Torches
The American flag customarily is displayed during all academic convocations. Two ceremonial torches symbolize the light of knowledge and indicate the way of the academic procession.

5 WILLIAM WOODS UNIVERSITY
The academic regalia worn at American college exercises today dates back to the older universities of northern Europe, such as Paris and Oxford. Gowns recommended for use in the colleges and universities of the United States have the following characteristics:
The gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves. The gown for the master’s degree has oblong sleeves, open at the wrist. The sleeve base hangs down in the traditional manner. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut, and the front part has an arc cutaway. The gown for the doctorate degree has bell-shaped sleeves. Gowns for the bachelor’s or master’s degrees are untrimmed. For the doctorate degree, the gown is faced down the front with black velvet; three bars of velvet are used across the sleeves. The facings and crossbars are velvet in the color distinctive of the discipline to which the degree pertains.
The hoods are lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree; more than one color is shown by the division of the field color in a variety of ways. The binding or edging of the hood is velvet or velveteen. The color is indicative of the discipline to which the degree pertains.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Michael L. Kehoe
Lieutenant Governor of Missouri
An inspiring story of personal perseverance, business success and dedication to public service, Mike Kehoe is the 48th Lieutenant Governor in Missouri history.
As part of the State of Missouri’s leadership team, his priorities are working to grow new jobs while highlighting Missouri businesses and manufacturers; working tirelessly to promote tourism, Missouri’s third largest industry, as part of the Tourism Commission; serving as the official advocate for Missouri’s senior citizens, and working closely with veterans’ organizations and Missouri legislators to ensure that our state government keeps its promise to the men and women who have served our country.
To say Lieutenant Governor Kehoe came from humble beginnings is an understatement. Born and raised in North St. Louis City by a single mother of six children, his mother worked three jobs to support the family while Kehoe and his siblings also went to work to help buy groceries and pay the bills. At 15, Kehoe started washing cars for Dave Sinclair Ford and worked his way into sales management by his early twenties. When he was 25, he was tasked with moving to Linn, Missouri, to help revive a struggling van conversion and ambulance manufacturing company. Kehoe purchased the company, and during his time leading Osage Industries, he expanded sales across the nation and created dozens of new jobs. In 1992, he purchased the Ford and Lincoln-Mercury franchises in Jefferson City, which he owned and operated as ‘Mike Kehoe Ford-Lincoln’ as one of the youngest Ford dealers in the nation until 2011.
Romaine Seguin ‘82
Kehoe began his career in public service in 2005, when he was appointed by Governor Matt Blunt to serve on the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission, and in 2009 was elected chair. In 2010, he was elected to the Missouri Senate to represent the Sixth Senatorial District covering seven midMissouri counties (Cole, Gasconade, Maries, Miller, Moniteau, Morgan and Osage), winning reelection in 2014 and serving as the assistant majority floor leader and the majority floor leader. Sworn in as Missouri’s Lieutenant Governor on June 18, 2018 after being appointed to the position by Governor Mike Parson, Kehoe was elected by Missourians to a full term as Lieutenant Governor on November 3, 2020.
Over the past three decades, Kehoe has been deeply involved in the Central Missouri community, serving as chairman of the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce, two-time United Way Fund Drive Chairman, and multiple other community organizations. He remains active in community business development and youth development activities including Boy Scouts, 4-H, and the Special Olympics of Missouri. He has been honored by the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association, the Missouri Association of Electric Cooperatives, and many others for his legislative accomplishments, including being named the Statesman of the Year Award for his work in the Missouri Senate as floor leader. As a businessman, he received the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award, Ford’s President Award, and was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame.
Kehoe sees his service in public office as a way of giving back to the community and state which has been so good and supportive to him. His priorities are simple: provide every child with a world class education, expand workforce development to help every Missourian prepare and learn new job skills so they can realize their potential, and cut red tape and burdensome regulations to attract high paying jobs to Missouri.
Chair of the William Woods Board of Trustees
Romaine Seguin ‘82, of Washington, D.C., has been Chair of the William Woods Board of Trustees since 2019 and a member of the board since 2011. She was recently named Chief Executive Officer of Good360, a global leader in product philanthropy and purposeful giving, following a long career of leadership with United Parcel Service (UPS). Seguin served as president of UPS Global Freight Forwarding, overseeing air, ocean and rail freight forwarding, as well as brokerage and supplier management for 220 countries and territories served by UPS around the world; and as president of the UPS Americas Region, was responsible for all UPS packages and cargo operations in Canada and more than 50 countries and territories across Latin American and the Caribbean.
A 1982 graduate of William Woods with a degree in marketing management, Seguin began her career with UPS in 1983 as a part-time hub supervisor in St. Louis. She then advanced through a variety of increasingly responsible operational and management roles with UPS in both the U.S. and Europe.
In 1994, she returned to the U.S. as an Air District Controller and was promoted to a senior operational role in which she was responsible for opening the first automated test wing at UPS Worldport. She moved to Europe in 2007 to become managing director of UPS South Europe and was promoted a year later as Chief Operating Officer for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, based in Brussels, Belgium.
A frequent speaker at community and business events, Seguin has received multiple awards and recognition for her work in the international business community. In addition to serving as Chair of the WWU Board of Trustees, she also serves as a board member for Fight Colorectal Cancer, Women’s President Organization, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Southeast Region.
