LEARN with US
We honor and acknowledge that Peters Valley exists on the lands of the Munsee Lenni Lenape people, whose ancestors were the first craftspeople and makers on this land that today is stewarded by the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
Peters Valley is firmly committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity. This will remain one of our most critical goals, ensuring the school supports all who come here, with no bias in regard to age, color, disability, gender identification, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, economic status or veteran status.

From beginners to the advanced, artists, craftspeople, and seekers gather for week-long or weekend workshops for an immersive experience like no other. Together, we build an inclusive and supportive community that helps us push our skills…and imagination!
This year, you’ll find an array of compelling offerings from seasoned and new instructors, as we advance our commitment bringing together a diverse and equitable community of learners. I hope you’ll visit our website to get all of the details and learn more about the 2023 instructors who will be joining us this year.
In addition to workshops, Peters Valley is a place for craft artists to work, be in residence, and connect their art to collectors and the public. See more in these pages about artist opportunities and visit our exhibition/retail space online and in person.
I look forward to seeing you on the Peters Valley campus this year for an enriching experience of learning, practice, and deep appreciation of the power of craft.

Featured Workshops
FIBERS &TEXTILES
A Materials Exploration - The Cochineal Insect: Maestro Porfirio Gutierrez
In this workshop, Maestro Porfirio Gutierrez will lead participants through a materials exploration of the cochineal insect. The Cochineal Insect is a small scale insect, known for its red pigment in ancient Indigenous Mexico. Participants will explore the alchemy of the cochineal insect as it lies at the intersection of ancient science and craft. The group will study how the color relates to PH levels and shifts accordingly, how to mordent and create various hues with the same pigment, and how to create secondary hues by over-dyeing.
Aug 12-13 • Tuition: $425 • Studio/Materials Fee: $60
CERAMICS
Exploring Salt Firing: Cathi Jefferson
In this hands-on workshop you will participate, discover and get a real feel for the amazing possibilities of salt firing. You’ll discover many ways to glaze the bisqued white stoneware pieces that you bring and help load the kiln absorbing the different nuances required for salt firing. You’ll be involved in the firing process, learn and see different approaches plus begin to do some hands-on making. Detailed surfaces with incised lines, stamps, textured surfaces, and slip decoration come alive in the salty atmosphere.
July 14-18 • Tuition: $735 •
Studio/Materials Fee: $80
WOOD
Experiment with the art and science of wood steam-bending and explore design possibilities with curves. This hands-on, playful, and experimental workshop will introduce the basics of steam bending techniques to form a straight wood into a curved or twisted one. We will experiment directly with the material to stimulate creativity and prompt ideas. Through combinations of free bending and mold making, we will achieve unique, organic lines and forms; the possibilities are infinite.

The Peters Valley Experience
Peters Valley School of Craft champions the unifying power of art, craft, and creativity; celebrates the diversity of our shared humanity; and condemns racism and violence in all forms.
Explore your Creative Potential: The rural, wooded setting of Peters Valley creates a unique opportunity for immersion learning. Nestled in the midst of the beauty are state of the art studios managed by Artist Fellows with the assistance of a Studio Assistant. We are an inclusive, supportive community that welcomes you to explore and create.
Community & Collaboration: Workshop participants range in age from 18 to 80+, beginner through advanced, from all walks of life. All studios break for lunch at the same time and everyone comes together at our dining hall to share in their experience. Visiting other studios in the evening is encouraged and the Friday night instructor presentations give everyone an incredible insight into the process and inspiration of the visiting instructors.
Our Campus: Our dormitories, studios, dining hall, office and gallery are housed in mostly historic farm houses and structures; some of which are only partially accessible. The terrain is natural; paths and driveways and some roads are not paved. There are no streetlights in the park which allows for gorgeous night skies. Our campus is surrounded by waterfalls and hiking trails, and just 2 miles from the Delaware River.
Lodging & Meals: On-campus lodging is offered in one of our historic homes. Shared and single rooms are available with everyone sharing bathrooms and common areas. The housing is “no-frills” but clean and comfortable. Linens and towels are provided. Our Dining Hall serves three meals a day, and always offers a vegetarian option. Lunch is included in the cost of tuition and meal plans are available for breakfast & dinner.
Safety: Your personal safety and comfort are our priority! Both in the studio and out, we strive to make all of our visitors feel safe and welcomed. Many of our staff live on campus and are here to help you with anything you might need. We follow the guidance of the State of NJ Dept of Health and the CDC recommendations and adhere to the Federal guidelines for all COVID-19 procedures. We will reach out prior to your arrival with the most up to date procedures and protocols.
Helping You Plan: Please visit our website or call us (973) 948-5200 for complete information on lodging, meals, accessibility, transportation or any other questions you may have. We are always here to help and want your Peters Valley experience to be amazing!
