Wives rule in SIX

HENRY THE EIGHTH’S six wives as stars of a Broadway musical? Well, it beats getting your head cut off! Imagine these Tudor women throwing off their long gowns and grabbing a microphone and you’ve got SIX, one of the most original musicals to arrive on Broadway. The show, which features an all-woman cast and allwoman band, won a Tony Award for Best Original Score and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical. “SIX totally rules,” says The New York Times. It’s a “rollicking, reverberant blast from the past.”

How did such an extraordinary idea come to fruition? SIX was created by two British university friends, Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss.

“Lucy and I were at Cambridge University together,” says Toby. “We ended up working on a lot of the same shows—she directed and I acted. We talked about writing a musical together someday. In 2017 the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society asked for applications to take an original musical to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, so I applied. When I got the gig I asked Lucy to write it with me. I said, ‘I have an idea for a pop concert musical with the six wives of Henry VIII. Do you want to write it with me?’

“SIX is told by the wives of Henry VIII but as a girl group performing a pop concert for an audience,” he continues. “They’re sick and tired of everyone arguing over who’s the most important wife, and the Queens decide to hold a competition between them: Whoever had the worst time in her marriage to Henry VIII will be crowned the leading lady of the girl group! The pop concert consists of each Queen singing a solo in order to stake a claim for the spotlight— but, without wanting to give too much away, not everything goes according to plan …”

“So much of the show is shaped by the individual six Queens performing onstage, and what each brings to her role and to the group dynamic,” says Lucy, who is also the co-director

of the show. “Even though each Queen had a palette of pop stars who inspired their character, the actual interpretation of them is super malleable. The performers have really made these roles their own, even taking inspiration from artists who weren’t around when we were first writing SIX. We have been so excited to see all these incredible performers’ versions of the Queens.”

While the execution (no pun intended!) of the story is unusual, the show does have some important points to impart to a 21st-century audience. SIX enables these women to tell their own stories, rather than let the predominately male versions that have come down history be the final word. These Queens don’t need men to make the show entertaining, clever and funny. Above all, a serious story about these women’s lives can be told while also acknowledging the silliness that can be found in the musical genre in which it’s presented. In other words, these Queens are going to tell their audience some serious home truths about living in a palace and have fun while doing it.

“This SIX is a solid ‘10’ for joy,” says Variety, and Entertainment Weekly proclaims, “Broadway’s high energy history remix reigns supreme.”

The best review? Audiences loves it! Come see these unlucky-in-love brides drop the mic as they take a stand for themselves.

Ballet BC triple bill is a captivating Center debut

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE the boldness of Canadians. For an example, just look at Ballet BC. Daring and innovative, its distinctive style and collaborative approach have made the company a hotbed for the creation and performance of new works. The company makes its Center debut June 3 for one night only.

Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Ballet BC is an internationally acclaimed contemporary ballet company that is a leader and resource in the creation, production, and education of contemporary dance. Nearly 40 years after it was founded, the company embraces the wide diversity of technique and style in contemporary ballet, honoring its roots and components, while also creatively pushing the limits of dance.

The Center’s engagement will feature three pieces. Garden uses Camille Saint-Saëns’ Quintet in A minor, Op. 14. The work has a prominent piano line and the classical music is a strong counterpoint to the contemporary dance. Dancers engage in duets, quartets, and larger ensembles as they interact with the music.

The second piece is another work that features a large group of dancers but is very different. Bedroom Folk “… contemplates movement through a darker lens,” says criticaldance.org. “Intense and erratic physicality, heightened by the pulsing sounds of Israeli DJ Ori Lichtik, reduces motion to automation and dehumanization.”

“Setting its … black-clad dancers against a glowing orange-red background, it has never looked more like a strange and hallucinogenic nighclub rite,” says creatastir.ca. “The group jerks, squats and shuffles to the relentless beats.” Bedroom Folk has created something opposite to the fluid movements of Garden. The dancers may look, at times, like gawky teens, but it is completely mesmerizing as the dancers assemble and

pull apart, attack one another or rescue a dancer who in turn creates more conflict. It could be the end of the world, danced exquisitely.

In Statement, choreographer Crystal Pite uses words, rather than music, to guide the dancers. The result is hypnotic. Imagine an office boardroom with a large table and four people discussing how to handle a company-caused catastrophic disaster. Instead of music, voices verbalize the situation while the dancers stalk each other around the table, “dancing” this bureaucratic story in extraordinary ways. “The text is pieced together with an elaboration of everyday communication gestures and moves,” says criticaldance.org. “Tilted heads, hunched backs and pleading arms…” The dancers seem to fill the stage as the story unfolds and participants blame each other, but who will survive to return to their desks, and who will be packing their boxes?

As this program clearly demonstrates, Ballet BC embraces the wide diversity of technique and style in contemporary ballet, honoring its roots while also creatively pushing the limits of dance. Ballet BC excites choreographers, dancers and audiences alike.

Veronica Swift returns to thrill jazz fans

THE TERM “PRODIGY” seems to be used loosely these days, but when it comes to jazz singer Veronica Swift, she’s the real deal. She put out her first album at the age of 9, went on tour with her musician parents, and at 11 appeared at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Lincoln Center. Swift returns to the Center’s Jazz Series June 24 for what will be an awe-inspiring performance.

“She not only possesses one of the strongest, clearest voices in jazz today, but she deploys it with style, wit, and expert phrasing and nuance,” says kuvo.org radio in Denver. “A comparison to Cécile McLorin Salvant seems pretty obvious.” (McLorin Salvant will be part of the Center’s 2023–24 Jazz Club series.) Londonjazznews calls her “a welcome reminder of Anita O’Day in her prime.”

Swift does mix things up. In a recent concert she segued into a hair-band rock song that was certainly outside the jazz genre, but then began to scat the music. That’s not what one would expect with an electric guitar in the background, but Swift confesses she was in a metal band when she was in college, and she makes it work. Her shows run the gamut of jazz, Broadway, the Sherman Brothers (of Disney-songs fame) and crooners from the ’60s and ’70s. She can sing a song like “How Lovely to be A woman” (From Bye Bye Birdie) and give it a dose of incredulousness that makes it clear this is not what most women today would lean towards.

She has performed with many leading jazz superstars including Grammy-winning trumpeters Wynton Marsalis and Chris Botti and pianists Benny Green and Michael Feinstein. Botti was blown away when he initially encountered Swift in a jazz club in New York City. “In two seconds you knew there’s something different about her. I literally think that in 10 years she’s going to be the biggest sophisticated jazz singer in the world. That’s how much I believe in her.” At the rate Swift is going, it will be a lot less than 10 years.

Opening the concert will be Kings Return, a Dallas-based a cappella group that proudly announces, “We sing in stairwells.” The quartet found fame when they started posting videos of their stairwell rehearsals in a local church and quickly got millions of views. They blend sounds that include gospel, jazz, R&B, soul, and classical music and have a reputation for performing diverse arrangements from “Ave Maria” to “How Deep is Your Love,” as well as cover songs by the Bee Gees, Stevie Wonder, and Simon and Garfunkel.

This will be an evening of beautiful voices you won’t want to miss.

Spotlight on: Bonnie and Paul Lubock

MEET BONNIE AND PAUL LUBOCK, new supporters of the Center.

After the Center opened its doors again after the pandemic in 2021, Bonnie and Paul joined as Patrons of Esteem and became Broadway Series subscribers at the same time. They enjoy the spectacle of a Broadway show, and recently supported the production of Moulin Rouge!, Bonnie’s current favorite show. They also subscribe to Pacific Symphony.

The Lubocks both believe in the connectiveness of the performing arts. It brings people together and when the couple were in a position to give back, they wanted to ensure that other families had access to the experience they had growing up.

Bonnie enjoyed music growing up. Family members, including her grandfather, were musicians and they enjoyed Mariachi and folk music.

“For supporters of the Center like us, it’s heartwarming to know that your contribution can help make the Center accessible for all, even if it is one trip a year to see a performance in Segerstrom Hall,” says Bonnie. “With the great variety of presentations, everyone can find something to connect with, whether it’s a Broadway show or a free event on the plaza.”

They both know that Segerstrom Center is a great place to experience a wide variety of performances as well as events on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza that patrons of all ages can enjoy. Although the Lubock’s children are grown, both Bonnie and Paul understand how important this exposure can be for future generations. Events such as the Beckman Arts and Science Family Festival and Five Days of Broadway are great opportunities for children to enjoy the arts and make connections with other

children with similar interests. It’s a win-win for everyone.

If you would like information about making a donation to the Center, please contact Elizabeth Kurila, senior director, gift planning strategies at (714) 942-6275.

As a privately-owned family business, our only responsibilities are to our customers, to the integrity of our product, and to our commitment to sustainable thought and practices.

Over the last 95 years our beds have been thoroughly vetted and tested – by the scientific community, but more importantly, by four generations of customers worldwide.

The results are clear. We have a technology that works and the history to prove it.

Fan favorites return in new Cabaret season

WE ALL LOVE MUSIC that comes from the heart. You really get to know each singer through songs and stories shared together, songs that can make your heart soar, or an unexpected riff that makes you laugh. That’s the essence of a great cabaret concert. The 2023-24 Cabaret Series artists will give you that sense of personal connection, sending you home feeling like you might have a new best friend.

Actor, singer and songwriter Michael Doyle is quite busy on Broadway. Since he hit the boards at the age of 20, he’s been in some big shows, including Spring Awakening, War Horse, and The Book of Mormon. He literally reached the top in 2022 when he won a Tony for his role in the gender-swapped production of Stephen Sondheim’s Company. As Jaime, he’s a gay man getting married but has cold feet, and sings the showstopping tongue twister, “I’m (Not) Getting Married.” Doyle had just 24 hours to learn the famous patter song before his audition and he nailed it.

Not surprisingly, Doyle is a popular cabaret star. At a recent engagement, Broadwayworld. com commented, “The audience was in the palm of the Tony Award winner’s hand, for … show tunes, standards, pop music, and Matt Doyle originals (the original material was especially satisfying).”

When Gerard Alessandrini created Forbidden Broadway 40 years ago, he intended it to showcase his singing and dancing talents. Over the years, it has morphed into many different iterations, with Alessandrini working behind the scenes as director, writer, and all-around funny guy. Forbidden Broadway: The Next Generation returns to the Center to skewer a new crop of musicals. The takedowns include Dear Evan Hanson, Wicked, Frozen, and Hamilton, as well as old favorites like Carousel and Woke-lahoma.

20 SEGERSTROM CENTER FOR THE ARTS
From top: Michael Doyle, Forbidden Broadway, Megan Hilty, Hopelessly Devoted: The Music of Olivia Newton-John

The actors do actors too, including Bernadette Peters, Gwen Verdon and Bob Fosse, and Judy Garland in her ’60s glory. You don’t have to be a die-hard Broadway fan to enjoy the jokes; just sit back and relish the music and those crazy quick costume changes. “Hysterically funny and savvy at the same time,” says Huffington Post.

The Center welcomes Megan Hilty back with her all-new holiday show that will be sublime. Hilty is no stranger to the Center. During the pandemic she performed an outdoor show on Argyros Plaza to a huge crowd and returned to Samueli Theater when we resumed indoor concerts.

Hilty made her name on Broadway in Wicked and starred in the TV hit Smash, and is a wonder to hear in a cabaret show. She was a hit at Feinstein’s/54 Below recently and gathered rave reviews. “Hilty has charisma, the versatility, the unique instrument, and above all an utterly individual style,” says cabarethotspot.com. “Each phrase came out imbued with her DNA. Such singing is fearless, masterful and revelatory.” Broadwayworld.com agrees. “Megan Hilty is a star. She’s got a brilliant stage presence, she can sing like an angel and she’s straight-up hilarious.”

Olivia Newton-John was a music legend, a four-time Grammy winner with 15 top 10 hits and 5 No. 1 hits, and a movie star who will forever be associated with her iconic role as Sandy in Grease. Broadway stars Jessica Hendy and David Burnham celebrate her magic in Hopelessly Devoted: The Music of Olivia Newton-John. Burnham is a handsome leading man, but don’t let that distract you. He played Fiyero in the Broadway production of Wicked for three years and was an original Broadway cast member of the musical Light in the Piazza. “He has a golden voice and boffo acting chops, both dramatic and comedic,” says stageandcinema. com. “But it was at a cabaret in San Francisco that clinched him as one of our great musical theater performers. He took every magic quality and combined them with an intimacy that was irresistible.”

Hendy is recognized as one of Broadway’s best belters. She recently closed the Broadway revival of Cats, having also starred as Grisabella in the original Broadway production. She has been

given rave reviews for her cabaret shows, and frequently performs with symphony orchestras. Hendy and Burnham will honor Newton-John’s life and legacy as only cabaret can.

Tony nominee Jeremy Jordan makes his Center debut with a journey through Broadway hits, including selections from West Side Story, Rock of Ages, and Les Misérables. There’s a good possibility that he’ll throw in some songs from the shows he has starred in, including Newsies, The Last Five Years, and Waitress. But it’s not all serious stuff. Of a recent performance, Broadwayworld.com said, “He brought down the house with his mesmerizing performance,” but added some lighthearted fun with a Disney princess-themed medley. “While goofy, was also heartfelt, never sacrificing the quality of singing.” He recently sold out Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London, where he thrilled audiences and critics alike. “A phenomenal voice, a brilliantly satisfying and versatile setlist and an infectious personality,” says allthatdazzles.co.uk. “When you go to a Jeremy Jordan concert, you might come for the music but you’ll stay for the comedy.” That sounds like a perfect cabaret evening.

Lillias White made her debut 40 years ago in the musical Barnum, and she’s been continued on page 27

Summer Sounds celebrates Black music in June

THE CENTER IS CELEBRATING Black Music

Month in June with Friday concerts on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza as part of the Summer Sounds series. It always starts at 7:30 pm and attendance is free.

The series opens on June 2 with South Side Symphony conducted by Marcus Norris. On June 9, Tolliver will bring his infectious music to the Center. His songs are a gumbo of soul, funk, pop, and camp, as funny as they are soul-baring.

Then, kick off your Juneteenth weekend with Summer Sounds on June 16. The evening will be a captivating combo of music by R&B crooner Kyle Dion, plus a DJ and food trucks. For a nice add-on, the following morning (June 17) join

us for Roots & Rise yoga and sound bath, plus community booths on the Argyros Plaza.

As always, George’s Café will be open with tasty bites and drink specials just steps away from the stage and dance floor.

“We want our whole community to join us in honoring Black music and the spirit of uniting everyone around our universal interests—great music and dancing!” says Center President Casey Reitz.

June 30 will be dark for the July 4 weekend.

CABARET SERIES, continued from page 21

a showstopper ever since. Whether the stage is Broadway or cabaret, White owns it. She returns to the Cabaret Series with Seth Rudetsky, comedian, actor, and Broadway expert extraordinaire, as shared on his popular radio show, “Seth’s Big Fat Broadway,” on Sirius/XM, for a concert and conversation.

White won a Tony Award in 1997 and was nominated again in 2010. She has starred in such Broadway hits as Cats, Dreamgirls, Fela!, and Once on this Island. “The force of her voice and her presence is as elemental as air, water, earth and fire,” says Broadwayworld. com. “She serves up joy and talent in giant portions in everything she does.” The New York Times says White “combines the sass of a classic blues mama with the skill of a Broadway star.” As of this writing she is starring on Broadway in Hadestown as Mrs. Hermes, where, at the age of 70, she’s on stage during the entire show. Perhaps Rudetsky will ask where her energy comes from! Prompted by Rudetsky’s funny and insightful questions, White will have behind-the-scenes stories and show-stopping songs for an evening to remember.

This is a great season to experience our Cabaret Series. Join us as we welcome some of Broadway’s brightest talents into the intimate setting of Samueli Theater. Get your subscription now—you won’t miss a single note!
