A MAGICIAN CAN NEVER REVEAL HIS SECRETS, BUT ILLUSIONS DESIGNER CHRIS FISHER SHARES HOW HE MAKES AUDIENCES SHIVER IN THEIR SEATS.

STAGING SCARES Chris Fisher was first drawn to magic at threeyears-old. After an injury left him in the hospital for six weeks, his parents bought him a magic set to help him pass the time. As an adult, he began his theatre career as a stage manager. Now, his love for magic and theatrical career have joined forces with Paranormal Activity, where he is tasked with bringing the scares and frights from the script to life.

“Illusion and magic in theatre often deals with every single element in a theatre production—you need to talk to lights, sound, props, costumes—so with my theatre experience, I can actually understand how to talk to each of those departments to get what [I] need for each illusion,” he said.

The process for Fisher always begins with the story. For Paranormal Activity, that meant sitting with writer Levi Holloway and director Felix Barrett to discuss what they would like to see.

Fisher then developed prototypes alongside his special effects prop company—like windows that smash. Those prototypes made their way into the workshop production, joining forces with other

design elements—lighting to help aid the effect, scenic to ensure the prop effortlessly blends in with the other furniture items in the set, and so on. Then, it’s time to test. And revise. And test.

And revise.

This is where the tricks get, well, tricky.

James, adapted quickly to the illusions. “He’s got some funny little bits of sleight of hand he has to do and he’s great with it,” Fisher praised. Together with Cher Álvarez, who plays Lou, the chemistry between their married characters makes it easier for them to perform the illusions—and for the audience to believe them.

“Anyone can go out and buy a magic trick and show it to someone, but it’s how you perform that trick, how you weave a story into that trick. That’s what makes it magic.” Actors tend to want to rush illusions, so Fisher advises them to slow down and allow for time for the audience to register what is happening. “If you make something appear and then quickly put your hand down, [the audience] can’t see what’s appeared—you need to give them a beat of seeing something then going to a blackout or to the next thing,” he explained.

So, while Fisher can’t divulge too much about what you are about to see, let yourself get excited and, perhaps, a little scared when the house lights go down.

(1984)

Thompson House Can you believe that the town of Springwood, Ohio where Wes Craven’s protagonist Nancy Thompson lived in A Nightmare on Elm Street is actually nestled in Spaulding Square in West Hollywood? This Dutch-Colonial house, with both a guest house and a pool, was built in 1919 and is a common tourist attraction for horror fans.

The 2009 horror film Paranormal Activity became a hit thanks to its found footage take on the haunted house horror genre. This technique transformed the movie’s San Diego filming location into a house of horrors that made many audience members afraid of their own dwellings. Take a look at some of the homes in Los Angeles brought to life by ghosts, zombies, and demons alike with Hollywood magic!

THE RING (2002)

Katie’s House The American remake of the Japanese horror film Ringu, The Ring displayed this huge, beautiful red brick house in Hancock Park as its opening shot. This is where the movie’s first victims succumbed to the curse of the haunted video tape.

HALLOWEEN

(1978)

Myers & Strode Houses The 1978 slasher flick that introduced the world to Michael Myers took place in the fictional town of Haddonfield, Illinois, but was filmed mostly in South Pasadena. The two main locations, the Myers house and the Strode house, were even right down the street from each other, a mere six minutes away by foot!

Bates Home & Motel Perhaps the most commonly viewed horror house in LA, the Bates Home & Motel is viewed by thousands of people every day since it’s a part of the Studio Tour attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood. Both the mansion and the Bates Motel exterior live on the Universal Studios backlot.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY

(2011)

Murder House American Horror Story’s first season took place in what was later referred to in the series as the “murder house,” the Rosenheim Mansion. This Tudor Revival home was built in 1908 and named after its architect, Alfred Rosenheim. It is a popular filming location and in 1999 was named a Los Angeles HistoricCultural Monument.

MICHAEL JACKSON’S THRILLER

(1982)

Movies aren’t the only pieces of media with spooky filming locations! Michael Jackson’s iconic short film/music video for his song “Thriller” ended with Ola Ray’s character narrowly escaping the dancing zombies by running up the stairs into this Victorian-style Echo Park home. Fun fact, the house next door is less haunted and more “charmed,” having been used as the home for the family of witches in the 1998 TV series Charmed.

(1986)

Freeling House While the original Poltergeist film was shot just outside of LA County in Simi Valley, the sequel moved the family to “Phoenix, Arizona” which was really just a Craftsman house in Altadena. Unfortunately, in January 2025 the house was destroyed in the Eaton Fire among over 9,000 other structures, most of which were residential homes.

(2019)

Wilson Vacation House Jordan Peele’s 2019 hit Us takes place in Santa Cruz, CA, and while the beach scenes were filmed on location, the Wilson family vacation home was located in Pasadena. The bone-chilling scene where the Wilsons are first confronted by their “tethered” selves was shot in the home’s spacious driveway.

MAMA OF THE ROW, LUIS ALFARO’S ADAPTATION OF BERTOLT BRECHT’S MOTHER COURAGE, PUTS LOS ANGELES’ INEQUALITIES IN THE SPOTLIGHT.

Playwright and former CTG Associate Artistic Director Luis Alfaro believes that “[Los Angeles] is a city of beautiful contradictions.” Hollywood’s glitz and glamour lives mere miles away from one of the largest unhoused populations in the United States.

“We’re a surreal city,” Luis said. “I love LA. It’s my home. It’s where I was born and raised, in the center of it—Downtown LA. But I think that when you’re a city’s biggest champion, you have to...be critical of it, too.”

His new play is a testament to the disparities and differing realities across the city of Los Angeles.

Mama of the Row or “Who Raised the Rent?” [A Los Angeles Vaudeville of Tragic Proportions] A Displacement of Bertolt Brecht’s Mother

Courage will be workshopped at Center Theatre Group this month, as a part of CTG’s larger new works development programs.

“I am a playwright who writes about social issues,” Luis said. “If I have a theme in my work, it’s about redemption, which is why I am so drawn to the classics. I usually do an adaptation of a piece and then an original and I like that, because, in some ways, I’m trying to bring the classics back to a modern audience. How can we see this great, beautiful idea or text live for an audience that doesn’t usually come into contact with classic works?”

Mama of the Row is an adaptation of German playwright Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children set in Los Angeles’ Skid Row. Brecht’s

Mother Courage follows the titular character as she tows her wagon of wares across Europe during The Thirty Year’s War, making deals with different characters and losing each of her children along the way. In Luis’ version, Mother Courage is “Mama,” who lives on the row, and her wagon is now a cart—one they live out of after losing their home and end up on Skid Row. Luis first started developing Mama of the Row in 2018 with an extensive research period. He not only studied other adaptations of Brecht’s Mother Courage (he views Lynn Nottage’s Ruined as a fellow contemporary), but interviewed members of the unhoused population. CTG first hosted a reading at the Benjamin Franklin Library in September 2018. He put pen to page again during the pandemic—at home. In 2024, Mama of the Row was also used as inspiration for CTG’s Storytelling Residency, an in-school program that engages students in the collaborative process of devised theatre. High school students studied the play, met with Luis, and experienced a reading of the show to explore how to tell stories of their own.

He is interested in exploring how the housing crisis in Los Angeles is a “connector issue” to other systemic social issues. “If we could get a hold of it, we would be able to deal with so much else in the city, like drug addiction, mental health, healthcare,” he said.

Brecht’s work spoke to the social and political issues of his time, from the late 1920s until his death in 1956. He wanted audiences to leave a theatre experience educated and upset by what they saw—not from an emotional perspective, but on a large, societal scale. This approach to theatremaking, dubbed Epic Theatre, relied heavily on “Verfremdungseffekt,” often translated to “the alienation effect,” in which audiences are distanced from the emotional aspects of the story through scene title placards, simple scenery and props, and satirical songs.

In an age where social media desensitizes its viewers, it might not have the same effect on audiences today as it did nearly a century ago.

Luis wants audiences to feel upset as well—but not in the way one might think when imagining a Brechtian adaptation. continues on page 16

“I love the word ‘upset’ because it’s not necessarily a negative word, right?” he said. “I want to be upset in a good way. I want to go to the theatre, I want to have a good time, and I want to learn something about myself.”

Despite the dark nature of Brecht’s Mother Courage, Luis said that Brecht initially wanted to cast comedic musical star Ethel Merman as the eponymous role. This inspired Luis’ characterization of Mama.

“I get the investment in humor, in a larger-than-life character who is roaming through the world in this extraordinary way, who is able to say all the funny stuff, all the scary stuff, in a way I can hear it,” he said.

But it is also Brechtian in the sense that he envisions the show meeting audiences where they are, unburdened by spectacle.

“Mother Courage’s carriage is whatever she is carrying with her and the environment that you’re in, which could be stripped down to nothing,” Luis said. “I love that we’re almost Greek in this way, that this kind of agitprop theatre invites you to be performed in a huge, gorgeous opera house or it should also be seen the same way on the street.”

Another key aspect of both Mother Courage and Mama of the Row are songs—Luis has opted to work with Mary Alfaro and Vaneza Calderon, bolero and mariachi musicians, to create the show’s original music.

“Mariachi is a very strong tradition that everybody knows, but no one’s really creating new mariachi work,” Vaneza said. “That’s the cool

Playwright Ins Choi was inspired to write the show because of his history working in convenience stores and his experience as a Korean Canadian.

He started to develop the play while in the Soulpepper Academy, a year-long program at the Canadian performing arts venue that supports theatre artists across the country.

Later in the year, Kim’s Convenience is remounted at Soulpepper Theatre, becoming the company’s most successful commercial hits.

2011: Kim’s Convenience premieres at the Toronto Fringe Festival, winning the New Play Contest.

Choi starred as Jung Kim, Mr. Kim’s estranged son.

2012–2015: Kim’s Convenience hits the road! The play toured across Canada for three years to soldout houses.

2018–2021: Kim’s Convenience goes international once it becomes available to stream internationally on Netflix in 2018. The sitcom starring Simu Liu, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Jean Yoon, Andrea Bang, Andrew Phung, and Nicole Power ran for five seasons, airing its last episode in 2021.

2024–2025: Kim’s Convenience returns to the stage for a tour across the United Kingdom in 2024 and 2025.

thing about Mama of the Row—we get to bring out instruments and our flavors and our sounds to create something completely new.”

At first, the two were brought in to just play music for the show but have now become key collaborators in the process.

What unites the three is a shared love for and knowledge of Los Angeles.

“We have this deep appreciation and love for LA and all of its quirkiness and imperfections,” Mary said.

“Getting to work with Luis... and on a story about Latinos in LA and the social issues that need to be talked about, all of those were huge draws for me.”

CENTER THEATRE GROUP SNEHAL DESAI (Artistic Director, he/him) was appointed Center Theatre Group’s third artistic director in 2023. As an artistic leader, Snehal has sought to raise awareness on social issues that affect Angelenos through impactful and empowering storytelling. Previously, he was the Producing Artistic Director of East West Players. A Soros Fellow and the recipient of a Tanne Award, Snehal was the Inaugural Recipient of the Drama League’s Classical Directing Fellowship. He has served on the boards of the Consortium of Asian American Theaters and Artists (Caata), Theatre Communications Group (TCG), and currently serves on the board of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT). Snehal was on the faculty of USC’s graduate program in Arts Leadership and is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama.

MEGHAN PRESSMAN (Managing Director/CEO, she/her) joined Center Theatre Group in 2019. Previously, she served as Managing Director of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company (D.C.), Director of Development for Signature Theatre (N.Y.), and Associate Managing Director of Berkeley Rep. She is a graduate of Yale School of Drama/Yale School of Management and serves as a mentor in the Theater Management program.

Meghan has served as the Vice-Chair for the Theatre Communications Group Board of Directors and is a member of the Broadway League.

DOUGLAS C. BAKER (Producing Director, he/him) joined Center Theatre Group in 1990. Doug is an active member of the Broadway League, the Independent Presenters Network (IPN), and is a proud member of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers (ATPAM). In 2013, Doug received the Broadway League’s prestigious Outstanding Achievement in Presenter Management Award.

GORDON DAVIDSON (Founding Artistic Director) led the Taper throughout its first 38 seasons, guiding over 300 productions to its stage and winning countless awards for himself and the theatre—including the Tony Award for theatrical excellence, Margo Jones Award, The Governor’s Award for the Arts, and a Guggenheim fellowship. The Kentucky Cycle and Angels in America (Part One) won the Pulitzer in consecutive years and, in 1994, three of the four plays nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play were from the Taper (Angels in America won). In 1989, Gordon took over the Ahmanson and, in 2004, he produced the inaugural season in the Kirk Douglas Theatre.

He is the Vice President of the Culver City Downtown Business Association and was the Co-Chair of the Ovation Rules Committee, producing the Ovation Awards from 2015-2019.

Luis hopes that Mama of the Row can help audiences across Los Angeles realize that theatre can be—and is—everywhere and for everyone.

“I want my community to know that going to a place like The Music Center is a part of your civic activity. You pay money to have that space there—use the spaces that you pay for and inhabit them,” Luis said. “We don’t just think about theatre as just an artistic or civic practice but [also] a spiritual practice. This is a version of church, right? And there is a kind of sermon that Mama of the Row is trying to get across—why is it so hard to get by in our city? When do we fail ourselves and when does our city fail us?”
