With your incredible support, the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute achieved a significant milestone in 2018: we graduated our inaugural class of Olympia’s Leaders, as the girls participating in the program are known.

Forty-five girls from the seven schools that serve Androscoggin County — the county I call home — completed the three-year program rooted in themes of “My Values” (10th grade), “My Voice” (11th grade), and “My Vision” (12th grade). Today, 95% of the graduates are pursuing post-secondary education and training — and many returned in the fall to share their stories with current Olympia’s Leaders.

The impact you have had on our program that raises the confidence and aspirations of Maine girls is simply remarkable. In turn, the impact the program has had on Olympia’s Leaders is nothing short of extraordinary. In the words of one of our Olympia’s Leaders: “The program has definitely given me courage and skills that will make a difference for the rest of my life.”

The Institute’s accomplishments would not be possible without our donors, community partners, school partners, the women who commit three years to deliver the monthly program during the school year, and the women and men who share their time to connect and network with Olympia’s Leaders. To each of you, I offer my deepest gratitude for the tremendous contributions that have propelled us to this moment.

Our mission is to raise the confidence and aspirations of high school girls by helping them develop the skills required to be leaders in their lives, families, careers, and communities, and I am filled with hope when I see our results.

Our program is having a profound influence on the hundreds of Olympia’s Leaders representing every county in Maine. Among the graduates, I am proud to share that 100% reported the program made a difference in their confidence. From personal experience, I know the advantage confidence can give women as they embark on new challenges and endeavors, speak up on behalf of others, and challenge the status quo.

Olympia’s Leaders also tell us the program made a major difference in their ability to communicate with others, to appreciate and work with different people, and in their leadership ability — all skills critical to achieving success in today’s interconnected world.

The program inspires not only Olympia’s Leaders, but also women in the Institute’s Leaders Network.

Members of the network — female donors and representatives from the organizations that support us financially — have asked for similar programming as professional development. A committee was formed to respond to this request, and we are thrilled with the ongoing engagement of this valued group of women who lift us up and invest time networking with the girls.

You have played a pivotal role in enabling the Institute to expand across the state and partner with 36 public high schools across Maine’s 16 counties — serving 465 girls in 2018 and expanding to serve 540 girls in 2019. We cannot do this work alone and rely on the critical gifts of time, talent, insight, advocacy, donations, and engagement from our network.

Every Olympia’s Leaders Advisor, corporate sponsor, partner organization, foundation, individual donor, volunteer, parent, supporter of Olympia’s Leaders, and friend of the Institute has been essential to our success. Together, we have created a community committed to nurturing young women in Maine, to helping them achieve impressive and measurable gains toward leadership outcomes, and to championing for a better tomorrow.

THE PR OGR A M “I really enjoyed the difference I felt in myself.

This program helped build my confidence so much. I am no longer scared to take the lead or stand up for what I believe in. I can public speak like there is no tomorrow when before I couldn’t even raise my hand.”

The mission of the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute is to elevate the confidence and aspirations of high school girls by helping them build the leadership, collaboration, and problem solving skills needed to become successful in their lives, families, careers, and communities.

Program design was focused by statistics published by the National Mentoring Partnership revealing that youth who were at risk of falling off track but had mentors were 130% more likely to assume leadership roles in adulthood.

The Institute achieves its mission by matching trained, caring advisors with groups of high school girls, known as Olympia’s Leaders. Teachers and guidance counselors identify students with incredible leadership potential who would benefit from additional support to realize and develop it.

Through the progressive years of “My Values,” “My Voice,” and “My Vision,” students identify their values in order to create a framework for future decisions — learning how to connect meaningfully with others and build a network of support. As a group, they create a safe environment in which they can practice being authentic, suspending judgment of others, and using their voice to communicate their opinions and collaborate.

The Institute equips its participants with the skills needed to be successful in post-secondary life. Topics revisited with frequency include confidence, resilience, flexibility, empathy, communication, and presence — all typical characteristics of successful leaders.

In 2018, the Institute partnered with 36 schools, engaged 200 women advisors, and served 465 young women.

THE N EED “There were a lot of changes. The most obvious was an increase in their confidence.

That was a huge difference, the way they carry themselves with confidence, and speak so much more easily.

Studies show that between elementary and high school, girls’ self-esteem drops, on average, 3.5 times more than boys’. This drop in female confidence often leads to a reluctance to trying new things or taking on bigger challenges, dropping out of school activities, and not believing they are good in math or science. Other studies report that, as early as middle school, girls are 25% less likely than boys to say they like taking the lead. A lack of confidence can be addressed by increasing interactions with successful women, specifically through mentorship and role modeling.

As reported in 2014 by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, three of the top ten skills in demand by employers are not taught in the classroom.

Those skills are: the ability to work in a team structure, the ability to make decisions and solve problems, and the ability to communicate verbally with people inside and outside of an organization — all skills which the Institute program focuses on to prepare Olympia’s Leaders for post-secondary life.

For the state of Maine and its citizens to thrive, we need to arm the next generation with skills needed to be successful leaders — as young women will play key roles in our collective success.

The “MY VALUES” year is designed for sophomores to increase self-knowledge of values, strengths, and passions — so Olympia’s Leaders have anchors for future decisions and can navigate differences between themselves and others.

MY VOICE

During the “MY VOICE” year, juniors leverage their self-knowledge to decide the messages they want to share, how to articulate them, and how to listen and respond to others’ ideas — so they can communicate appropriately; tackle challenges; and build, nurture, and show gratitude to networks of support.

They seemed more passionate about their interests, and how those connected with what they are doing after high school. They have a good handle on their values now.”

In the final “MY VISION” year, seniors map visions for their future and learn how to adapt their plans and mindsets in case they change course — so they make meaningful connections to advance their goals and proceed confidently into post-secondary education and life.

Outcomes are socially meaningful changes for those served by a program — generally defined in terms of expected changes in knowledge, skills, attitudes, behavior, condition, or status.1 The Institute’s program was designed to build the following skills for each Olympia’s Leader: self-knowledge, understanding and appreciation of difference, listening and communication, personal responsibility, presence, gratitude, mentoring, resilience, flexibility, and confidence.

These skills improve high school graduation and college enrollment rates, are equally valuable for all types of students, and the positive effects of programs that focus on these areas continue for at least four years.2 Following are the seven outcomes against which the program measures success: Communicate proactively/appropriately Olympia’s Leaders can communicate proactively and appropriately, and present their ideas clearly and respectfully.

Stronger network Olympia’s Leaders can build and nurture a supportive network that will serve them for years to come.

During junior year, 62% of the inaugural class of Olympia’s Leaders reported getting involved in NEW ACTIVITIES, and 57% took on new leadership roles. They continued this in their senior year, with one third (34%) reporting participation in new activities and one half (50%) taking on new LEADERSHIP ROLES.

By the end of the program, more than 70% of the members of the inaugural class stated that others considered them a mentor; more than one third said five or more people considered them a MENTOR.

By the third year, 100% of the girls said the program made a difference in their CONFIDENCE. And 95% said the program made a difference in their leadership abilities.

STRONG FINANCIALS FOR A SUSTAI NABLE FUTURE Robust revenues In 2018, the Institute continued its strong development campaign — raising and exceeding its operational fundraising goal for the fourth year in a row. In addition, the Institute received pledges that will ensure it will meet the Harold Alfond® Foundation’s $1.4M challenge grant — a three-year, dollar-for-dollar matching grant that began in 2017. Since the kick-off of the challenge grant, the Institute has received $1M of the $1.4M award, with disbursements of $500,000 in 2017 and $500,000 in 2018. Generous support from individuals, corporations, organizations, and foundations to date has ensured the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute will continue to have a positive impact on girls across our state for years to come.

Significant, annual and multi-year financial commitments Each year, Senator Snowe, the board, staff, and volunteers welcome 180 new Olympia’s Leaders to the Institute’s program with a commitment to support them through the three-year program.

While the Institute raises funds to meet its operational budget on an annual basis, the organization remains ever mindful of this up-front, financial commitment, establishing multi-year development goals to ensure it has the resources to see each of the 180 girls through the entire the program.

Proudly supported by individuals, corporations, and foundations To continue delivering its program at no cost to Olympia’s Leaders or partner schools, the Institute raises 100% of its operating dollars — an objective that could not be met were it not for ongoing and growing support of so many individuals, businesses, and foundations. Over the past four years, the support of Maine companies alone has grown by more than 370% — a recognition of the program’s impact and its potential to contribute to the development of Maine’s future workforce. Unum has led this growth by extending a two-year challenge to generate new and increased corporate gifts.

And foundations, whether tied to corporate charitable initiatives or with their own missions, set a new high-water mark in their support of the Institute in 2018, and continue to respond to the Institute’s mission in an extremely meaningful way. A generous gift from the Charles Butt Foundation, among others, will help position the Institute to continue to raise the confidence, increase the aspirations, and encourage the leadership of girls for many years to come.
