AND CREATING

COMMUNITY

DEAR FRIENDS, As I pen this letter to reflect on our 2019 successes, our world is facing a global pandemic of COVID-19 in 2020. Our hearts are with Olympia’s Leaders (OLs) — as the girls in our program are known — Olympia’s Leaders Advisors (OLAs), our school contacts, our communities, and all of you, who are our dear friends and supporters of the Institute. Even in these trying times, our mission to build the confidence, raise the aspirations, and increase the abilities of high school girls so they can be leaders in their lives, families, careers, and communities remains the focus of everything we do. 2019 was a spectacular year for the Institute, one which allowed us to refine the program and strengthen our support of the next generation of Maine’s leaders. Our annual end-of-year survey of OLs had impressive outcomes, showing the curriculum is successfully achieving its objectives. In addition, I was delighted by the statistic that 96% of the graduating class matriculated to post-secondary education and training. The start of the 2019-2020 academic year held special significance for the Institute. With your unwavering support and boundless encouragement, the organization not only welcomed its fifth class of students but also reached its expansion milestone set five years ago: to serve 540 OLs annually from 36 high schools across all 16 of Maine’s counties.

“THE CONNECTIONS I HAVE MADE IN THIS PROGRAM ARE TRULY SPECIAL. I CANNOT EXPRESS HOW THANKFUL I AM TO BE A PART OF THIS COMMUNITY.” OLIVIA WHITTAKER, OLYMPIA’S LEADER ‘19

The Fall Forum — which gathers all participants statewide and introduces their yearly themes of values, voice, and vision — took place at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor and was attended by more than 850 OLs, OLAs, facilitators, guest speakers, panelists, networking professionals, and school contacts. It exceeded our expectations in every way. Governor Janet Mills was gracious enough to join me for a fireside chat on stage, answering questions on confidence and aspirations from the OLs. Our small staff outperformed themselves, coordinating a daylong conference with individualized tracks and materials for hundreds — as well as welcoming remarkably more external guests — to produce a fruitful and inspiring day for all. Increasing our efforts to support women leaders in our state, the Institute also held professional development and networking events for our Leaders Network — more than 200 women from companies and organizations that contribute to the Institute, as well as individual female donors. Particularly well received was the CEO panel we held for women featuring four CEOs of Maine-based companies, who shared lessons learned in, and on their way to, the C-Suite. Our annual luncheon in December, once again, drew a full house with more than 600 in attendance. Our honored guest was Jelena McWilliams, a former member of my Senate staff who is currently Chairman of the FDIC.

Jelena gave an inspiring speech about dedication, resilience, and support; her words were directed to the OLs present but also captivated and uplifted their advisors and the audience of local business and community leaders. Three OLs also gave remarks, sharing the profound impact the Institute has had on their lives and how they have been able to share their learnings with others. At the close of our signature event, a substantial new matching gift was announced by Ann and Rick Bresnahan to incent new and increased donations to the Institute. We are beyond grateful for their generosity and for the many who have already answered the call to contribute. Their challenge also comes with perfect timing, as we have recently completed our previous matching grant from the Harold Alfond® Foundation. Our journey to this point has been punctuated by the belief that young women are deserving of our time and energy — that, if given the right structure and tools to use, they can not only better themselves, but also make our world a better place. We are already seeing OLs advocating for more appropriate policy on environmental and social issues; publishing articles and organizing events to educate during the Black Lives Matter movement; writing books on how to achieve better mental well-being during the transition to college; and founding their own artistic, scientific, and health organizations. We have shown these girls that they can,

and should, carry out their greatest visions; the skills and strength needed to achieve their dreams now lives within themselves; and, should they need help, they have an extraordinarily talented and caring network at the ready. Together, we have created a community that supports Maine girls, women leaders, and each other. The results of our combined efforts are undeniable, and my hope is that our continued help will develop the true potential that lies within our state lines. The Institute’s growth and success have been enabled by the selfless volunteerism of our OLAs; committed work from our school contacts; generous contributions of resources from our individual, foundation, and corporate partners; and countless offers of engagement from women and men we’ve met throughout the years. The Institute would not be where it is today without each of you; nor would the young women we work with. My gratitude for what you have done, and will go on to do, is truly immeasurable. All involved in the work of the Institute, or touched by it, are sincerely appreciative of your support as well. With my heartfelt thanks,

“THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO, ALL THIS WORK HAS MADE A DIFFERENCE FOR EACH GIRL IN THIS PROGRAM. YOU ARE HELPING TO SHAPE THE FUTURE, AND I HOPE WE DON’T LET YOU DOWN. I KNOW THAT WHAT I HAVE LEARNED THROUGHOUT THIS EXPERIENCE I WILL CARRY WITH ME AND USE THROUGH THE REST OF MY LIFE.” GABRIELLE BEAUDOIN, OLYMPIA’S LEADER ‘19

THE MISSION

THE ISSUE

THE SOLUTION

The mission of the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute is to raise the confidence and aspirations of high school girls by helping them develop the skills required to be leaders in their lives, families, careers, and communities.

Studies show that between elementary and high school, girls’ self-esteem drops an average of 3.5 times more than that of boys.

The National Mentoring Partnership revealed that youth who were at risk of falling off track but had mentors were 130% more likely to assume leadership roles in adulthood.

This decline in confidence often leads to disbelief in their math or science aptitude, quitting school activities, and avoidance of new experiences or challenges. It has also been reported that, as early as middle school, girls are 25% less likely than boys to say they enjoy taking the lead. This lack of confidence puts girls at a disadvantage, and the issue may continue into adulthood. The young lady who couldn’t raise her hand in class may become a woman who struggles to apply for a job, ask for a promotion, network with new people, communicate effectively with colleagues, lead a team, make decisions, solve problems, innovate in her industry, or even found her own company.

Each year at the Institute, more than 200 women business and community leaders volunteer as mentors. These Olympia Leaders Advisor (OLAs) are trained by the Institute then devote three years to delivering our unique curriculum to 540 high school girls, from 36 Partner Schools spanning all of Maine’s 16 counties. Cohorts of five Olympia’s Leaders (OLs) meet monthly with one or two OLAs for experiential activities, thoughtful lessons and debriefs, meaningful conversations, and goal setting. At the start and close of the school year, they also attend regional and statewide events with all participants and many guests from the Institute’s network. By increasing interactions with successful adults — specifically through mentorship, role modeling, and networking — OLs can witness, copy, test, and grow confidence. The curriculum intentionally exposes girls to leadership characteristics, skills, and tasks right as they are getting settled in high school. Instead of letting girls fall behind, we help them get a step ahead and stand alone, knowing they have mentors, peers, and the Institute’s entire network as support.

“IT HAS BEEN WONDERFUL MEETING ALL THE PEOPLE I HAVE MET AND HEARING ALL THE WONDERFUL IDEAS I HAVE HEARD. I WILL FOREVER APPRECIATE WHAT THIS PROGRAM HAS GIVEN ME AND HOPE TO TAKE EVERYTHING IT HAS TAUGHT ME WITH ME INTO ALL MY FUTURE ENDEAVORS.” ANNIE CHOI, OLYMPIA’S LEADER ‘19

THE PROCESS To deliver on its mission, the Institute has: n

Crafted a progressive curriculum rooted in the themes: “My Values” (10th grade) “My Voice” (11th grade) “My Vision” (12th grade)

n

Focused individual, paired, small group, and statewide activities to achieve seven key leadership outcomes, measured by four surveys throughout the program

n

Devised protocol to select participants who have notable leadership potential but lack the confidence to act on it — and who reflect multiple types of diversity within their school population

n

Planned for structured group agreements so individuals can remain authentic, stay safe but be brave, suspend judgment, and communicate and collaborate effectively

n

Trained successful women to facilitate three years of monthly meetings focused on personal development — who also role model and mentor along the way

n

Designed an online platform and both regional and statewide events to create a network of peer support

n

Welcomed women and men business leaders from across Maine to tell their stories, practice networking with participants, and form a community to celebrate accomplishments and share scholarly and professional opportunities

THE CURRICULUM

Olympia’s Leaders identify their values, strengths, and passions — so they can know what is most important to them, make meaningful decisions, follow a fulfilling path, and navigate differences between themselves and others.

Olympia’s Leaders leverage their self-knowledge to decide the messages they want to share, how best to articulate them, and how to listen and respond to others’ ideas — so they can communicate effectively; resolve or overcome challenges; and build, nurture, and show gratitude to networks of support.

Olympia’s Leaders map visions for their future and learn how to adapt their plans and mindsets in case they change course — so they may make meaningful connections to advance their goals and proceed confidently into post-secondary education and life.

THE OUTCOMES The Institute’s mission is forward-looking. Not only does the program seek to support OLs as they finish high school, but also to prepare them for achievement well beyond. Organizations and companies’ workforce needs are changing, and, in today’s interconnected world, employers need team members who are creative, have strong communication skills, are collaborators, adaptable, and emotionally intelligent[1]. The outcomes respond to skills sought by companies and community organizations.

KEY OUTCOMES: Connection to skills needed most by hiring organizations: SELF-KNOWLEDGE OLs have a deep understanding of their values, strengths, and passions. This self-awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence and appreciating how they respond to, and interact with, others. APPRECIATE DIFFERENCE OLs learn to appreciate differences in others, be curious about those differences, and better understand others’ perspectives. As a result, they have the skills needed to collaborate effectively with others. BUILD NEW SKILLS/PERSPECTIVES Skill-building across the three-year program includes learning how to listen and share opinions and ideas thoughtfully (communication skills), as well as practicing vulnerability, flexibility (adaptability), and empathy (emotional intelligence).

“THANK YOU FOR SHOWING ME MY OWN STRENGTH. YOU HAVE CHANGED THE WORLD BY CHANGING ME — AND THE GIRLS AROUND ME. I WILL FOREVER BE GRATEFUL.” CHARLI ROBINSON, OLYMPIA’S LEADER ‘19

COMMUNICATE PROACTIVELY/ APPROPRIATELY The “My Voice” year is focused on communication skills, beginning with learning how to listen to others and appreciate different voices. It then transitions to harnessing confidence and values in order to practice how to communicate thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly and respectfully — so others will join the conversation. This also leads to greater ability to collaborate. TAKE ACTION/RESPONSIBILITY OLs can connect their strengths and passion to a vision for their future, as well as take action to realize that vision. This not only does demonstrates motivation, a key component of emotional intelligence, but also creativity. MENTOR OTHERS/CONNECT Upper-class OLs welcome incoming sophomores and support them throughout their first year — leveraging their increasing communication skills, creativity, and emotional intelligence. STRONGER NETWORK Networking and increasing awareness of career options is a part of each year of the program. Learning to connect with others, ask questions, request help when needed, and maintain contact with a network requires communication skills and builds emotional intelligence.

THE IMPACT To ensure the Institute’s program is making a measurable difference in the lives of OLs, year-end surveys are compared with baseline surveys annually. The Institute graduated its second class of seniors in 2019, and program data indicated participants made tremendous gains toward the intended outcomes.

A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE As a result of the continued and growing support of so many individuals, corporations, and businesses, in 2019, the Institute exceeded its operational fundraising goal for a fifth year in a row. Because of their generosity, the Institute was once again able to offset the full cost of its annual program – a cost that has grown with the addition of nearly 500 Olympia’s Leaders (OLs) since the Institute’s inception in 2015. Through responsible stewardship and ongoing efforts to balance the delivery of robust programming with cost efficiency, the Institute has maintained a healthy and growing balance sheet positioned to meet the organization’s needs for years to come.

MULTI-YEAR COMMITMENTS Each year, when the Institute welcomes 180 new OLs, it also makes a

commitment to see them through the entire three-year program. The promise made to these young women requires that the organization not only raise its annual operational budget, but also stay ever mindful of the need to endow the program for future years. The Institute has been fortunate to receive several large matching gifts to help it reach its multi-year development goals. In 2019, the Institute received a final disbursement from the Harold Alfond® Foundation’s three-year, $1.4 million matching grant. Paired with funds matched on a 1-to-1 basis, the Alfond Foundation’s gift guarantees the continued participation of 90 OLs for the foreseeable future. At the annual December luncheon, Ann and Rick Bresnahan, long-time friends of the Institute, surprised the gathering of 600 guests by announcing a generous

$150,000 matching grant to incent new and increased donations in honor of the program’s five-year anniversary. The response to the Bresnahan’s challenge was immediate, putting the Institute in a position to fully match the gift quickly and further extend the sustainability of its program.

DONORS MAKE IT POSSIBLE The success of the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute over the past five years is due in no small part to the generosity of its donors. Without their support, the Institute would not have the resources necessary to raise the confidence, increase the aspirations, and encourage the leadership of Maine’s young women. We remain ever grateful to all those whose passionate support allows us to do this important work.
