ong before the movie “Arachnophobia” was released in 1990, people have had an almost unnatural fear of spiders. Notice how we said “almost.” The truth is that spiders can be pretty scary. Maybe not enough to make a person scream and run away or throw things at it in an attempt to squish it before it has a chance to skuttle across the floor and walk its creepy legs all over you. But that all depends on who you are. Regardless of how rational or irrational the fear of spiders may be, they are pretty unique and interesting. So Snippetz has decided to set aside our fears of these eight-legged monsters, uh, creatures and untangle the web of misconceptions and misinformation about spiders.

You’re probably thinking, “I know the difference between insects and spiders.” But if you thought long and hard about it, other than spiders having eight legs and not six, it might be difficult to actually pick out the things that make one distinct from the other. Spiders are arthropods, just as insects are but anatomically, they are different from insects because they have two body segments instead of three. Their body segments, the cephalothorax and the abdomen, are joined by a small, flexible cylindrical body part called a pedicel. Additionally, spiders do not have antennae like insects do. They also have the most centralized nervous system out of all arthropods. Most arthropods have muscles that they use to help extend their limbs to move around. Spiders don’t. Instead, they actually use hydraulic pressure to extend their limbs.

Most spiders are carnivorous, preferring to feast on insects and other spiders. Some of the larger species even target birds and lizards. Because spiders’ digestive tracts aren’t large enough for them to ingest food in solid form, they inject digestive enzymes into their victims which liquefies the insides, which spiders then suck up like a disgusting milk shake.

While Spider-Man might be advertised as a web-slinging crime fighter, we all know who the original web-slingers really are. And those webs are just as impressive in real life as they are in the Spider-Man movies. In fact, for its weight, spider web silk is stronger and tougher than steel.

Most spiders have four sets of eyes, arranged in certain patterns depending on the species. Even with all those eyes, spiders aren’t able to see things that are far away; they’re near-sighted.

WHAT’S ON THE MENU?

There is one species of spider, the Bagheera kiplingi, that was identified in 2008 as actually being herbivorous, meaning they eat plants rather than insects, lizards, birds or humans . . . uh, other spiders. We meant other spiders.

Even without the corrective lenses spiders would need to improve their near-sightedness, some species are able to see things humans can’t. In fact, some have been shown to be able to see in both the UVA and UVB light spectrums.

Typically, spiders make great use of their webs by trapping their prey in them. Others will use a sticky lasso to shoot at their prey and reel it in. Still other species actually run down their prey, which is why stomping on it while emitting a high pitch scream may not be a huge overreaction.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

ENTERTAINMENT 12-13

Most people know that spiders have spinnerets that extend from the end of their abdomen. These appendages help spin the wide variety of webs that different species of spiders can create by extracting and placing silk from up to six different kinds of glands located in their abdomen.

Spider silk is mostly comprised of protein that is similar to insect silk, such as the silk from silkworms. It starts out as a liquid and hardens as the spider pulls it out of its body. This action actually changes the internal structure of the silk’s proteins. What makes spider silk unique is the juxtaposition between its elasticity and its strength. Spider silk is much more elastic than other similar biological materials, like chitin (a derivative of glucose found in insect exoskeletons, among other things), collagen and cellulose. It can stretch much further without losing its shape, making it ideal for trapping prey.

THIS BITES! We all know that spider bites can be nasty things. However, only a few species are actually dangerous to humans. Many people believe that tarantulas are something to be Snippetz Spins a Tale About Spiders... Continued on Page 3

feared, probably based on their size and the size of their fangs, but in fact, if they were to bite you, it would only cause a mild irritation. Their venom is not strong enough to kill a human. Recluse and widow spiders, on the other hand, are highly venomous and a single bite can be fatal and is always a serious medical concern. Similar to a tarantula, the funnel web spider will often display its fangs as a defensive mechanism, but if it were to bite you, it probably wouldn’t inject enough to be fatal. Over the last 50 years, only 13 human deaths have been recorded due to funnel web spider bites. Even with that small number, until recently, humans still considered the funnel web spider to be the world’s most dangerous spider, based on the toxicity of their venom. But the Brazilian wandering spider overtook that designation based on the higher frequency of human encounters. So if a tarantula isn’t as scary as it seems, what is there to be afraid of? Well, tarantulas, besides being huge and scary-looking with massive fangs, also have tiny hairs all over their bodies. Why is that so worrisome? Tarantulas can actually fling these hairs to deter potential predators, porcupine-style.

DANCE, DANCE It may sound strange, but spiders have inspired a type of dance. During the 16th and 17th centuries, it was believed that a person could avoid the lethality of a tarantula bite if they engaged in a harried, frenetic type of dance to a specific type of music.

That music became known as a tarantella. Even Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky included a tarantella in one of his Pas de Deux in “The Nutcracker.”

Don’t have an entire hour to exercise? Take fifteen minutes. Too tired to get up for a sunrise? Try it the next morning. Don’t have a babysitter so you can go hiking? Sound familiar? A day in the life of a single parent. It’s not easy and it’s not difficult to notice that no where on that list was it stated, ‘personal time.’ Personal time is often times overlooked because so many other things

crave our attention. Our kids, bills, work, groceries, laundry, and the list goes on and on. Some things are overrated in life…like trying to be perfect. But personal time is not overrated. In fact it’s necessary to improve quality of life and maintain some sanity. Some parents may think it’s selfish to take personal time, but it’s essential to allow for growing, healing, and improving your quality of life. It’s not selfish. An example of selfish would be buying a new television when food can barely be purchased. Adding in personal time to bring in a state of balance not only assists the parent, but also demonstrates to the children that living instead of surviving is what life is about. Children grow up following their parents’ examples, regardless of what is being verbally stated.

When you try to change a pattern, it disrupts the pattern and many choose to go back to the old. Create an idea, find a solution, and follow through. The sale from that defense contractor was not the result of good luck; it was the result of hard work. Several years ago the Air Force Academy football program was highly rated with a great won/ lost record and a dynamic coach. I proposed to them the creation of the Air Force Academy Football Annual. The deal was that we would create the full-color slick magazine that summarized each of their games and they would send it to all of their season ticket holders. We were to sell ads around the copy to pay for it and generate us a profit and they were to pay for the distribution.

SNIPPETZ™ DINING GUIDE used as a serving dish for salads or soups. Small, young artichokes don’t have to have the fibrous center choke removed, and can be cooked and eaten whole. Try this wonderful recipe for Lemon Chicken With Artichokes and Olives. The simple combination of flavors showcases artichokes in a delicious way.

FUNNY FLOWER

I

t’s strange, it’s lovely, it’s a thistle, it’s a flower, it’s the pale-green blossom of spring -- it’s the artichoke. Artichokes are in season, so it’s time to go to the market and get some thorny deliciousness for yourself. Artichokes may be a food you think you know -- stripped down to its heart and frozen and packaged in a box, jar or can. But artichokes are delicious in all their forms. If you’ve never had the chance to buy them in their full, sculptural beauty, fresh off the plant, mature or young and tender, then you’re truly missing something. The artichoke is a member of the cardoon family, which is native to the Mediterranean. Cultivation began there as early as the 9th century. The artichoke likes mild, dry climates for growing, and in the United States it seems to prefer California’s central valley almost exclusively. Being what it is, a leafy flower, makes it a great source of fiber. It’s also high in vitamin C and magnesium. If you live in California, you’ve probably had the chance to savor a fresh artichoke. However, it might seem a little exotic to the rest of us. The big round globe, with all its layers, might be a little intimidating. What to do with it? What is edible? What is not? Use fresh artichokes within a few days of purchase. You may want to trim off the prickly points of the leaves before preparing them. Surprisingly, most of the flower is edible. The only exceptions are the more fibrous end of the stem (the upper part of the stem is very good) and the center. This part of the large, mature artichoke is inedible. There are many tasty and attractive ways to prepare fresh artichokes. Large heads are delicious stuffed and roasted. Or artichokes can be steamed and the leaves removed and served for dipping into any sauce your imagination allows. Once the fuzzy center -- the “choke” of the artichoke -- is removed, the hollowed out core can be

At one retailer, a mere 4 percent of tested supplements contained the material shown on the label. The attorney general now has asked for information from all four retailers about the processing of these supplements, as well as quality control.

What does this mean for those of us who use herbal supplements to try to increase our nutritional intake or to adjust a medical condition? It means we need to be careful. The more drugs we’re on, the greater the risk of interactions. For those of us with compromised immune systems, the contaminants in supplements can have adverse effects.

ONION SEEDS, SETS AND STARTS

Before taking any supplements, ask your doctor for a recommendation. Remember: The Food and Drug Administration doesn’t have to approve supplements before they end up on store shelves.

DRYWALL PATCHES,

f onions are a regular staple in your kitchen, then you might be considering them as an addition to your vegetable garden this spring. After all what good is a vegetable garden if you’re not growing the things you buy the most? If you’re worried you won’t be able to eat fifty onions in one season simply allow them dry completely after harvesting and then store them in a cool dark basement using pantyhose with knots tied between each onion. This way you’ll have months to use up your harvest. The best part is that you can cross onions off your grocery list, but don’t forget to replace it with pantyhose. Don’t worry guys if I see you at the grocery buying pantyhose I won’t judge.

catalogs or found at your local garden center and you can find them in three different forms. They can be started from seed, from sets or from starts also called transplants. For our short season I recommend either starting from sets or transplants. Onion sets will come in a bag and look like a bunch of mini onions. They’re great because these are second year onions and you can plant them earlier than transplants. All of the hard work has been done for you. Generally many beginner onion growers have better success with sets. Onion transplants on the other hand are 8 to 10 week old onion plants. They already have green tops and after they’re planted will begin to form a bulb. The real benefit to transplants is that they usually come in many varieties unlike sets that come in just yellow, white or purple. This allows you to pick varieties based on how well they store or whether they are day neutral, which is best for our climate. Both sets and transplants will require moist, well-drained soil. Onions are heavy feeders so prepare your soil with bone meal and follow with regular feedings. Different gardeners swear by different techniques. As usual it comes down to what works best for you. So if you’re new to onion gardening give both sets and transplants a try. If you end up with onion overload than simply thin your onions out and use the tops as green onions!

Shortly thereafter, while still recovering, she was shocked to receive a $600 bill for the funeral of her leg. Evidently, she was supposed to pay for the limb’s burial -- and the bill was even broken down into the separate costs for the plot, the minister, the hearse and the gravediggers. • The name “Alice” means “noble kind”; “Amy” means “beloved”; “Angela” means “messenger of God”; and “Amanda” means “lovable.”

• Ever wonder why so many coin banks are shaped like pigs? Here’s the story: In ancient times, a lump of clay was called a “pygg.” A clay bowl formed from this lump would often be used to hold loose change, and it was called a pygg bowl bank. According to legend, at a later point in history, a potter unfamiliar with the term received an order for several of these pygg bowl banks. Instead of the bowls, he made coin banks shaped like pigs; they became such a hit that they’re still around today. • The Puritans wouldn’t allow the singing of Christmas carols. *** Thought for the Day: “’A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.’ That is why so many persons don’t fool with it.” -- Dan Kidney (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
