Instead of only focusing on Valentine’s Day – which is the 14th, for those

Of course, we’ll address Valentine’s Day. We aren’t heathens after all. But we’re not going to get all caught up in that. Instead, it’s all about “wuv, true wuv.” In case you didn’t get that last reference, that was the clergyman from “The Princess Bride” when he attempts to marry Buttercup and Prince Humperdink. And now, without further ado, we bring you Snippetz’s article about love! Love is in the Air!... Continued on Page 2

Hop the Atlantic Ocean to the west and we Americans have transformed that tradition into tying empty cans to the bumper of the car in which the newlyweds make their exit from the ceremony. KEEPING THE ROMANCE ALIVE We’re not talking about that kind of “keeping the romance aliveâ€? so get your mind out of the gutter. We’re talking about ways that couples can keep their relationships interesting as time goes on because, let’s face it, things can get a bit boring and mundane when you’re 15-20-30 years into your marriage. SMALL CHANGES BUILD HEALTHY EATING HABITS

A

---

new year brings about a desire for change, so let’s start with your health! When it comes to our daily meal routine, change can sometimes be challenging. Studies have shown that it takes from two to eight months to form a new habit. You can create a positive eating “habit” by making small changes over time, like eliminating sugary drinks and high-sodium foods. Consider making healthy changes that reflect your personal preferences, culture and traditions. Think of each change as a “win”

Focus on whole fruits more often than drinking 100% juice. Snack on fresh, frozen, canned or dried fruits instead of cookies, brownies or other sugar-sweetened treats. Offer whole fruits without saturated fat, sodium or added sugars as dessert. Vary your veggies to include green, red and orange choices. Add fresh, frozen or canned vegetables to salads, side dishes and recipes. Prepare your vegetables without sauces, gravies or glazes to lower the amount of sodium, saturated fat and added sugars.

MAKE HALF YOUR GRAINS WHOLE GRAINS Choose whole-grain foods more often than refined grains. Make at least half the amount of grains you eat each day whole grains. Find high fiber, whole-grain foods

by reading the Nutrition Facts label and ingredients list. Some common whole grains include oatmeal, whole-wheat flour and popcorn.

MOVE TO LOW-FAT AND FAT-FREE DAIRY Choose low-fat or fat-free milk and yogurt. Buy low-fat or fatfree cheese more often than regular cheese. Regular cream cheese, butter and cream are not in the dairy food group because they have little or no calcium. They also are high in saturated fat.

VARY YOUR PROTEIN ROUTINE Mix up protein foods to include seafood, beans, nuts, seeds, soy, eggs, lean meats and poultry. Select seafood twice a week, including fish and shellfish. Add beans or peas, unsalted nuts and seeds, and soy in main dishes and snacks. When planning your daily meals, try

healthy new ways to prepare family favorites. This recipe for Greek Pork Chops With Veggie Rice incorporates fresh fruit and juices into savory dishes and mixes grains and vegetables. Continued on Page 7

1. Make a marinade for the pork by combining 1 tablespoon of the oil, the orange juice, soy sauce, oregano and garlic in a glass bowl or re-sealable plastic bag; mix well. Cover bowl, if using, and refrigerate the pork chops for at least 4 hours or overnight. 2. Remove the pork chops from the marinade and discard the marinade. Sprinkle pork chops with the salt and the black and red pepper. 3. Place a large skillet on the stove over high heat. When hot, add the remaining tablespoon of oil to the skillet. Add the pork chops to the pan, waiting about 30 seconds between each addition. 4. Cook about 3 minutes on each side until crispy. Set pork chops aside on a plate and add the orange slices to the pan; cook on each side about 30 seconds. Serve pork chops over a bed of Mixed Veggie Rice and top with the orange slices. Serves 4.

BEWARE!! FRAUDS & SCAMS

T

his month in the Snippetz computer column, I want to cover a subject that is a huge concern: computer frauds and scams. Many of my customers have reported being the victim of a computer scam and it frustrates me that I am not able to help them sooner. While it is very common that the victims of a scammer are usually older, more trusting, and less technically savvy, people of all ages and knowledge levels have been caught. Let’s start by discussing the most common type of computer (or phone) scam. Phishing is the attempt to obtain sensitive or personal information through fraudulent means. The scammers try to obtain credit card numbers, bank account numbers, PINs to these accounts, and other personal information, usually involving money.

Before we go any further, let’s all repeat after me: •

Microsoft will NEVER call me or e-mail me and tell me there is a problem with my account or ask for my password or PIN! Apple will NEVER call me or e-mail me and tell me there is a problem with my account or ask for my password or PIN! No legitimate online seller or company will send me an e-mail asking for my password or PIN! Neither Microsoft nor Apple or anybody else can “see” into your computer and determine that it has a problem. You should NEVER agree to an offer to secure or repair your computer remotely!!!

And while we are at it, let’s add these: •

The IRS will NEVER call you to discuss a tax problem. The IRS deals strictly with letters. Don’t let anybody tell you they are calling from the IRS. No government entity will EVER call you to announce that you have legal action pending, a court fine due, or are the subject of a lawsuit. This rare occurrence will ALWAYS be handled by written correspondence.

Seeing a pattern here? Bottom line is that nobody should ever call you outof-the-blue and ask you for a password, PIN, or money…EVER!!! Just hang up! Let’s look at some e-mail scams out there that may pop into your inbox. First, let me say that you cannot re-

ceive a virus or have a problem just from opening an e-mail. Taking any action described within a scam e-mail could lead to serious problems. Here is the body of an e-mail I received that had a very convincing Apple logo on it: ACCOUNT DISABLED -- “It seems that your account did not follow the guidelines set in our terms and condition, which made us temporary disabled your account. Please log in and review all the personal data below.” Then it had a link with a button to click that read “Reactive Account”. So how did I know that this was a scam and wasn’t from Apple? First, reread my bullet notes in the left column. Next, the e-mail address it came from was “Apple <2YFHH8WT.kueoyjqT-Inspiration.6cyoFeAp@eRZezVSrco.idinspiration.harvey-leebarry.rocks>”. This is obviously not an e-mail address Apple would use. Finally look at some of the awkward words and phrases in the text. “It seems…”, “terms and condition”, “temporary disabled”, “Reactive Account”. You would not find these errors in a legitimate e-mail. 99% of scam e-mails will have some or all of these elements in them. Look for misspelled words, awkward phrases, weird e-mail addresses that have strange domains (the letters after the period such as .com, .org, etc.) In the example above, .rocks is a dead giveaway. I received an e-mail supposedly from Netflix saying that my account was suspended because my credit card had been denied and that if I just clicked the button below, I could reenter my credit card information and my account would be restarted. Once again, I looked at the e-mail address of the sender: “NetfIix <szxLpUvVuUIUmHT.133375739916768@szxLpUvVuUIUmHT.133375739768.business>. Not exactly a legitimate looking e-mail address. Additionally, the body of the message was so poorly formatted that it was difficult to read. An obvious fraud. A scam I almost fell for last year was much simpler. We receive parts daily in the mail from UPS, FEDEX, and the U.S. Postal Service. I received a very simple e-mail that appeared to be from FEDEX that told me to click on the button below to get details on a delayed shipment. This seemed normal and only at the last minute did I see that the e-mail address of the sender looked very suspicious. Clicking on the button might have taken me to a page asking for personal information, or it might have been the setup for another type of e-mail problem: virus and malware insertion.

We’ll talk about malware in my column next month. Finally, an e-mail fraud that was popular in the past 5 years and is still around today is the Nigerian Phishing scam or the Nigerian Prince scam. While “Nigerian” is used most often, the scam originates in other African countries too. In this scam, a person from Africa comes into a large sum of money, usually in the millions. He or she is unable to move the money out of Africa on their own and offers you a percentage of the money if you will only help them move it out of the country. Ultimately, they are looking for your bank information, and sometimes, they are looking for you to invest a small sum of money up front so that you can realize a large profit later. My father used to tell me that there is no such thing as a free lunch, or no such thing as something for nothing. This is good advice when receiving these types of emails. There is no large sum of money and you will not receive a percentage. Just delete these e-mails.

It seems that every year, scams become more sophisticated and harder to avoid. But if you apply some of the lessons above and use common sense, you can avoid many e-mail scams. I encourage people with elderly parents who use the computer frequently to have a discussion with them on this topic. Cut this article out and share it with them to help them avoid becoming a victim. If you receive a suspicious e-mail or a phone call and are unsure what to do, feel free to call us at Simple Computer Repair before you do anything and we can help you determine whether it is a legitimate e-mail or computer service. If you have allowed somebody you don’t know to have remote access to your computer, unplug it from the Internet immediately and bring it to us so that we can ensure that it is still secure. As I tell all my customers, there should only be two people in your computer: you and your friends at Simple Computer Repair.

2020 HONOR FLIGHTS STARTING UP SOON

L

---

ast year the Honor Flights Network took 21,000 World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War era veterans from around the country aboard flights to Washington, D.C. Over the years, non-profit HFN has taken over 200,000 veterans on these flights to see the memorials dedicated to them in the nation’s capital. Because of donations, the veterans themselves paid nothing for their trips. The 2020 season will be starting in a few months. Are you able to go as a volunteer escort to help three veterans for one day? Can you host a fundraiser or donate money? With over 20,000 veterans on a wait list for a trip, volunteers and donations are the most crucial at this point. Your first step is to look at the Honor

Click on Hubs/Flights and find the black dot closest to you. All but five states have hubs with a total of 140 locations. Click on a dot and you’ll find contact information. Click on the website link for your hub. You’ll learn about the local group: fundraisers, links to refer a veteran and more. If you’re a veteran who wants to go alone or with your family, you can go solo and meet up with the larger group in Washington, D.C., if you can secure your own funding and transportation. Another program is the Southwest Lone Eagle, for veterans who have been on the waiting list for more than one year and do not live within 120 miles of a hub. For veterans with a terminal illness, there is the TLC programs, meaning Their Last Chance. For more information, or if there isn’t a hub in your state, call Honor Flight at 937-521-2400. Note to veterans: use of a wheelchair or oxygen are not obstacles to going on one of these trips. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

going to stay an ordinary day. Baldo and his puppy Tessa set out for town to have a cup of coffee. should explain in detail what her exercise regimen is. We are taught to think carefully of the mechanism of injury, and I am concerned the exercise may be that injury.

IS OVEREXERCISE CAUSE OF ‘KNOTS IN THE BACK’? DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife is 69 and in very good health, exercising at least two hours a day. She has suffered from “knots in the back” for over 10 years. It is extremely painful, often bringing her to tears. It comes on suddenly at any time of the day or night, and lasts hours, days and occasionally weeks. She has been to several physicians, whose recommendations are to “live with it.” She has tried chiropractic, massage therapy, prescription and OTC painkillers, stretching and home massage, all to no avail. I cannot see the knots, but I can feel a tightness when I attempt to rub them out, which usually does nothing. A glass of wine is the only reliable relief, and it lasts only a few hours. Is there any recourse to this condition? -- J.P. ANSWER: I am sure you and your wife must be frustrated. The fact that it comes on suddenly, can be felt as tightness and gets a bit better with alcohol makes me strongly suspect she is having muscle spasms. These most often come on in the legs and feet, but they can affect the back too. Two hours a day of exercising sounds like a lot, and she may be overexercising some muscles, while possibly not exercising others. This can lead to imbalances in muscle strength. Another common problem stemming from exercising is inadequate stretching. Stretching is the first place to start for many people with muscle cramps. A physical therapist or physiatrist may be of immense benefit, and your wife

Abnormalities in electrolytes (blood salts, especially potassium, sodium, magnesium and phosphate) are only rarely the cause, although many people write me that they have been helped by taking one or more of these. Primary muscle diseases, side effects from medications and inadequate hydration are possible, but also unlikely. In absence of detailed knowledge about her exercise regimen, I’d recommend she try backing off a bit, maybe using ice after exercise, stretching the back under supervision and trying a hot bath or shower before bed. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 78-yearold who runs 15-20 miles per week, with prostate gland enlargement and reduced urinary frequency with occasional use of Advil. As a runner, I have been reluctant to make ibuprofen a daily regimen because I have read that inflammation is part of the body’s response to tissue damage, which is crucial to the healing process and is important for muscle growth. When ibuprofen’s anti-inflammatory effect reduces symptoms, does it affect the healing process also? Can you comment on the pros and cons for runners? -- B.M. ANSWER: High-dose ibuprofen was shown to inhibit muscle protein synthesis following weightlifting exercise. This led to a suspicion that it might impair the gains in muscle strength that are made with exercise. However, a Canadian study showed that moderate doses of ibuprofen (400 mg after exercise) did not impair muscle growth or gains in strength. Using ibuprofen for occasional muscle soreness or for the purpose of reducing prostate inflammation should not adversely affect your performance in running. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. CLOBBERED PORCELAIN

A: Most old silver flatware is no longer

T

he English word “clobbered” has been used since at least the 1600s, but its meaning has changed. It still means beaten up, badly injured or damaged. But the word had a very different meaning in the 1700s. It describes porcelain dishes or ornaments with blue-and-white underglaze decoration that were altered. And in an auction catalog or antiques display, the clobbered alterations are not bad and not damaging, but enhancing, and not a reason to pay a lower price. The Chinese made most of the blue-andwhite pieces in the late 1700s to early 1800s. They were shipped to many countries and overpainted with colored glazes because the public would pay more for colored urns or dishes. The decorations did not follow the blue-and-white outlines of the original glaze, but were applied as new pictures and ornamental designs over the old glaze. The English did the same overglaze decorating, but many thought it was damaged, not improved. The Germans called it “schwarzlot” (blackish) decoration. A pair of “Chinese Export clobbered porcelain vases” were sold at a New Orleans auction for $5,750. Clobbering in green,

It shouldn’t be put in the dishwasher with stainless steel or other metal flatware. Certain foods, rubber, felt, wool, oak and some types of paint will cause silver to tarnish. Silver flatware should be stored in special flannel bags or chests lined with tarnish-resistant flannel. Storing silver in plastic wrap or newspapers, or in cardboard boxes, causes it to discolor. WHAT IS THE CAPITAL GAIN TAX?

C

apital gains are the profits realized from the sale of capital assets such as stocks, bonds, and property. The capital gains tax is triggered only when an asset is sold, not while the asset is held by an investor. However, when a mutual fund sells shares of its holdings during the year, mutual fund investors could be charged capital gains. (A fund’s capital gains distribution is not taxable if the fund is held in a tax-deferred account.) There are two types of capital gains: long term and short term; each is subject to different tax rates. Long-term gains are profits on assets held longer than 12 months before they are sold by the investor. The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 instituted a longterm capital gains tax rate for taxpayers of up to 20%. Short-term gains (on assets held for 12 months or less) are taxed as ordinary income at the seller’s marginal income tax rate. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, signed into law in December 2017 established “breakpoints” for application of these rates as under current law, except the breakpoints will be adjusted for inflation. For 2020, the 0% breakpoint

will be up to $80,000 (up from $78,750 in 2019) for married taxpayers filing jointly, up to $53,600 (up from $52,750 in 2019) for head of household, and up to $40,000 (up from $39,375 in 2019) for all other filers (except estates or trusts). The 15% breakpoint will be $496,600 (up from $488,850 in 2019) for married taxpayers filing jointly, $469,050 (up from $461,700) for head of household filers, and $441,450 (up from $434,550 in 2019) for all other filers (except estates or trusts). The 20% breakpoint will be $496,600 (up from $488,850 in 2019) for married taxpayers filing jointly, $469.050 (up from $461,700 in 2019) for head of household filers, and $441,450 (up from $434,550 in 2019) for all other filers (except estates or trusts). The taxable amount of each gain is generally determined by a “cost basis” — in other words, the original purchase price adjusted for additional improvements or investments, taxes paid on dividends, certain fees, and any depreciation of the assets. (If you received the property by gift or inheritance, different rules apply to determine your starting basis.) In addition, any capital losses incurred in

Lexicon of Life-lifting Words Dr. Ron Ross’s

THIS WEEK’S LIFE-LIFTING WORD:

“CONTENTMENT” by Ron Ross

“Contentment”… sounds great, doesn’t it? After all, the dictionary defines contentment as the state of being happy and satisfied (not an exciting kind of happy; it’s more like a peaceful ease of mind). But caution, while true contentment is worthy of being included in the Lexicon of Life Lifting Words, temporary contentment might be considered a “life lowering word” — a state of being that holds you down. The following are seven tips to help you distinguish between temporary and true contentment. Tip # 1: True contentment is evasive. The world changes so darn fast that

most of us don’t have time to floss our teeth, much less think deeply about the gifts in our lives that represent true contentment. We’re too busy solving today’s crisis, worrying about tomorrow’s headaches, and focusing on our future success; contentment isn’t even on the radar! Tip #2: True contentment is personal. We’re all different and we all experience and feel things in different ways. Allow yourself to be content and happy with what you have (but never with whom you are). Stop comparing yourself to others; you’re not them and they’re not you and that is good. Tip #3: True contentment comes

the current tax year or previous years can be used to offset taxes on currentyear capital gains. Losses of up to $3,000 a year may be claimed as a tax deduction for married joint filers and $1,500 for married separately filers. If you have been purchasing shares in a mutual fund over several years and want to sell some holdings, instruct your financial professional to sell shares that you purchased for the highest amount of money, because this will reduce your capital gains. Also be sure to specify which shares you are selling so that you can take advantage of the lower rate on long-term gains. Otherwise, the IRS may assume that you are selling shares you have held for a shorter time and tax you using short-term rates. Capital gains distributions for the prior year are reported to you by January 31, and any taxes owed on gains must be paid by the due date of your income tax return. slowly. Achieving contentment takes patience and recognizing it when it finally arrives usually requires deep introspection. So, don’t expect contentment to come at an early age. If you’re an ambitious person with a thirst for learning and a quest for success, then contentment may feel like a natural enemy. Take your time—be patient. Tip #4: True contentment requires daily interaction with real people. You can’t experience contentment on Facebook or Twitter, and you won’t find it in a text message or an email. You must live in the real world with real people and personal experiences. As Barbra Streisand reminded us, “People who need people are the happiest people in the world.” Tip #5: True contentment comes from gratitude. Remember that uncomfortable, full feeling you have following the fabulous family feast on Thanksgiving? That’s not contentment. True contentment comes from an understanding of what Thanksgiving really represents. So, become grateful and chew on this one simple truth: It’s impossible to develop true contentment without gratitude for what you already have. Tip #6: True contentment cannot be purchased. As the old saying goes,

Higher-income taxpayers should be aware that they may be subject to an additional 3.8% Medicare unearned income tax on net investment income (unearned income includes capital gains) if their adjusted gross income exceeds $200,000 (single filers) or $250,000 (married joint filers). This is an outcome of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. “Money can’t buy happiness.” Look no further than Britain’s monarchy— dripping in gold and drenched in jewels. The Royals’ wealth is extreme, yet happiness and contentment aren’t guaranteed even within their ranks. When you seek true contentment, you break the habit of satisfying discontentment with acquisitions. I’ll bet you know someone who has all the stuff anyone could ask for – but they are miserable. Tip #7: This final tip takes contentment one step deeper: True contentment (i.e., biblical) is the conviction that Christ’s power, purpose, and provision are sufficient for every circumstance. You must choose to rest on God’s promises despite what’s going on in your personal life. It’s a simple principle to understand, but one that’s difficult to incorporate into our lives. Here’s what the Bible says about contentment: “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world and we take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.” (1 Timothy 6: 6-12)

DECIDING WHERE TO RETIRE

At the bottom of the list, while New York scored very high for culture, it had the worst affordability rating. So, how to decide where to retire? Not with a list like this. To pinpoint a location where you’ll be happy in retirement, you need to get to know the area in person.

Choosing Social Media Platforms for your Business Over 97% of marketers are now using social media to engage with their audiences. But if you’re tasked with starting a social media strategy for your company, you might be wondering which type of platforms you should be on.

PAGE 15

TikTok, which offers short, repetitive clips -- similarly to Vine, has begun experimenting with testing ads with GrubHub as their first client. These video ad spots will run for about five seconds and can be skipped instantly by the user. If you do test out these platforms, you might want to make sure your industry and content fits in with the young age demographic.

You should also try to properly estimate the time and money that might go into keeping these accounts up to date and relevant. These platforms are very creative and experimental. They have young audiences, which can help brands better target Gen-Z. Stories can be used to give your following a behindthe-scenes look at your brand. Note that these platforms are fairly limited to mobile. These are up-and-coming Social Media Platforms for Interactive Media. If you are adventurous, give it a go!
