eath induces all kinds of behavior in people. We mourn the loss of the ones we’ve loved and often celebrate the lives they led. There’s no right or wrong way to handle the passing of some you’re close to. For as long as people have been on the earth, we’ve found ways to handle death. Some rituals make sense on a nearly global level, like gathering with family and friends to garner strength and comfort during our time of need. Other rituals are very specific to one culture or another. Snippetz decided to examine some of the more obscure “death rituals,” to find out what exactly goes on when someone dies. More importantly, we wanted to know why these cultures do what they do. So come along with us as we journey around the world to investigate death rituals.

food would absorb the deceased’s guilt and sin, cleansing them so they can pass on to the next life. The sin eater would then eat and drink, and pronounce that the person was free from any sins by giving a speech that goes something like this: “I give easement and rest now to thee, dear man. Come not down the lanes or in our meadows. And for thy peace I pawn my own soul. Amen.” Once all that was complete, family members supposedly burned the plate and bowl that held the ritualistic meal once the sin eater had left.

Snippetz Unearths Parting Rituals... Continued from Page 1

SIN EATING Most people have heard of certain religions that believe if you confess your sins to God before you die and ask to be forgiven, you will be granted access to Heaven. In a way, that is a death ritual. Sin eating is sort of the same thing, but it takes the idea of cleansing oneself of sin to the next level. While the ritual of sin eating can vary slightly, depending on the region, the tradition holds that sin eating takes place either at the bedside of someone who is dying or at the funeral of someone who has already passed away. The sin eater, who is usually paid a small fee (honestly, would you eat someone else’s sins for free?), sits beside the body on a low stool. Depending on the regional tradition, a loaf of bread and bowl of beer are either passed over the body or placed directly on top of it. The belief is that the

As you might assume, sin eating wasn’t exactly a high-paying career, nor was it something that brought great esteem to sin eaters or their families. Often, they were social outcasts who lived alone in a secluded area of the village and had little to no contact with members of the community outside of their sin eating work. In some instances, they were avoided as completely as possible due to their widely-believed association with evil spirits and unholy practices. Sin eaters were often believed to be doomed to spend the afterlife in hell because they ingested the sins of others and carried those around with them. In fact, the Roman Catholic Church supposedly excommunicated any and all sin eaters.

References to the ritual of sin eating have been traced back to early Egyptian and Greek civilizations and have been documented as recently as 1906, when the “last sin eater,” Richard Munslow of Shropshire, England, died. The tradition can also be found in the Aztec culture, in the form of Tlazolteotl, the goddess

of earth, motherhood and fertility. She is said to cleanse the souls of people confessing their sins to her on their deathbeds by “eating its filth.”

THE “TURNING OF THE BONES” Celebrating the life of a loved one that has passed is not uncommon. Mostly, it’s done through feasts and ceremonies. But in some cultures, like the Merina people of the highlands of Madagascar, the party doesn’t stop once the deceased has been buried. In fact, every seven years, the Merina dig up the bodies of their dead relatives in the “famadihana” or “turning of the bones” ritual and change the person’s clothes. It’s meant to be a ceremony of happiness and large amounts of money are often spent on the celebration. At the height of the festivities, the Merina people gather around their deceased relatives and take pictures with them. Often, they steal a small memento, like a piece of clothing, from their dead relative, to keep under their mattress in an effort to thwart infertility. Finally, the bodies are reburied, dressed in new duds and surrounded by money and alcohol to accompany them to the afterlife.

occupying British outlawed it in 1829. Suttee is when a grieving widow voluntarily lies next to her husband on his funeral pyre, where she is burned alive next to her late spouse. Because widows in India were extremely low on the social ladder, considered impure, shunned and abhorred by society, the widows often thought it to be far more preferable to die beside their husbands where they could be reunited after death.

SELF-MUMMIFICATION We’ve all heard about mummification in ancient Egyptian culture. But what about self-mummification? This ritual was practiced until at least the late 1800s in Japan and it’s just as it sounds. But the preparations for this ritual aren’t easy, especially since the people undertaking the task were very much alive throughout the process. We’ll spare you the details but let’s just say the preparations for self-mummification took over 2,000 to be completed properly. The purpose was to achieve enlightenment by separating oneself as far from the physical world as possible so that at death, instead of being reborn, you became one with Buddha instead, truly a great honor in Japanese culture.

OFF WITH THEIR FINGERS! The Dani tribe of Papua New Guinea had a truly horrifying way of honoring their

dead. Unfortunately, it was the women and girls of the tribe that suffered the most from the ritual. Whenever a family member died, the females of that family would have one of their fingers cut off. Of course, the Dani had a primitive way of numbing the hand and fingers to supposedly lessen the pain but the outcome was still the same. Why would they do this? Well, it was believed that doing so showed honor to the deceased relative. In fact, the amputated digit was ritualistically burned and then the ashes were stored in a special place to be revered for years to come. Naturally, the practice has been outlawed for quite some time, but there are still women of the tribe who are living proof of the ghastly ritual.

PROFESSIONAL MOURNERS While many cultures preach the quality of “keeping your cool” when something awful happens, like the death of a loved one, those same cultures often believed that the dead could (and would) exact revenge if they weren’t sufficiently mourned at their funerals. How did these cultures, such as the Taiwanese, overcome the obstacle? They hired professional mourners. These mourners were paid to make a huge scene, bawl their eyes out, pull on their hair, beat their chests, throw themselves on the ground, anything to show the devastation they supposedly felt. Everyone knows that it’s all for show, but the family gets to show their sorrow and pain while saving face by not having to put on such histrionics themselves. Pretty clever, huh?

ave you ever wondered what happened to your sweet child after he or she turned thirteen or fourteen-years-old? It’s almost like, overnight, your child morphed into a moody adolescent. When you’re not expecting that, you might start reacting to him or her instead of responding in a more effective manner. As my daughter was growing through adolescence, and there was conflict, I would remind myself that if I wanted her to hear me, I would need to speak in such a manner that she would. Most

We must listen first. It’s not to just listen to the words they’re saying, but the words they’re not saying. Everyone knows teenagers go through hormonal changes, confusion, friendship difficulties, jealousy, and competition. Just like us, they want direction. But when direction is offered in such a way that it’s not safe to disagree or express, shutdown begins to occur. Once this occurs, it can be difficult to

parents have already understood that yelling and threats do not work so well. It might provide a short-term solution, but it’s very short-term. Why? Who wants to be yelled at? We can think about our careers and our bosses; how many of us want our supervisors to yell at us or make us feel we’re doing a horrible job? What we do want, many times, is constructive feedback. We like communication and direction if current performance isn’t measuring up to expectations. Even more than our careers, we can also remember our own teenage years.

reverse it entirely. We must listen and respond with understanding, compassion, and with firm direction. Firm doesn’t mean angry or reactive. It means with a sense of inner strength to maintain boundaries while keeping the emotional connection alive while teens navigate their lives through a maze of twists and turns. Remember your adolescence. What did you want? How did you want to be treated? What helped you develop trust in others? Respond with that knowledge. 100 YEAR-OLD RECIPE A DELICIOUS REMINDER

M

arch is National Women’s History Month, and we’d like to name some honorees of our own -- wonderful women who’ve made significant and lasting contributions to the world of food in our country. When we think of people who influenced our cooking, we think of our mothers, grandmothers or aunts. It’s our families that give us our history, and food is very much a part of that. But when women stepped outside the home to become cooks and professional chefs, they made history for all women. They proved that in a world where few females had gone before, they not only achieved success, they changed the industry. One of the most inspiring stories about the triumphant female chefs is the biography of Edna Lewis, the granddaughter of an emancipated slave. In 1949, she opened a successful and high-profile restaurant in Manhattan at a time when few women, especially black women, owned businesses. She cooked for luminaries such as William Faulkner, Truman Capote and Gloria Vanderbilt. One of Edna’s favorites was a Lane Cake, also called an Amalgamation Cake. The cake was created after the Civil War. “Amalgamation” means “combining or uniting,” and the cake’s name may have symbolized the union of race and culture marked by the freeing of blacks from slavery. The history behind the Lane Cake and the Amalgamation Cake is varied, but somewhere their paths cross. Today, both cakes are white cakes with a filling of raisins, nuts and coconut. Some recipes also use bourbon, dark rum or brandy. This recipe was passed down from contributor Gina Harlow’s husband’s grandmother. She was given the recipe by her motherin-law, which makes it more than 100 years old! No matter which name you choose for this historic recipe, it’s a delicious reminder of the contributions that women have made to the culinary industry.

AMALGAMATION CAKE For the cake: 2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter, room temperature, plus more for the pans 3 cups all-purpose flour, more for the pans 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 cups granulated sugar 1 cup whole milk, room temperature 5 egg whites, room temperature For the fruit filling: 5 egg yolks, room temperature 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter

For the cake: 1. Heat oven to 350 F. Butter and flour two 9-by-2-inch cake pans. Set aside. 2. Sift together 3 cups flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside. 3. Place butter in bowl of electric mixer. Cream on medium-low speed and gradually add sugar. Continue mixing until pale yellow. Alternating between dry and wet ingredients, starting and ending with dry, add the flour mixture and milk to the butter mixture. Set aside. (The batter will be very stiff and thick.) 4. In a clean second bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, beat the egg whites to stiff peaks, 3 to 5 minutes. Take a cup or so of beaten whites and whisk into batter. Fold in remaining beaten whites. Divide batter between prepared pans. 5. Bake until the tops are pale golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes clean, 35 to 40 minutes. Remove to rack to cool slightly. Invert the cake layers onto a rack to cool completely.

For the frosting: 1. In a small, heavy saucepan, combine sugar, water and cream of tartar. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar has dissolved. Increase heat to a boil. Do not stir anymore. Boil, washing down sides of pan with a pastry brush dipped in cold water from time to time to prevent sugar from crystallizing, until a candy thermometer registers 240 F, about 5 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, in bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whisk the egg whites on medium speed until soft peaks form, about 2 1/2 minutes. 3. Remove syrup from heat when temperature reaches 240 F. Pour syrup in a steady stream down the side (to avoid splattering) of the bowl containing the egg white mixture, with the mixer on medium-low speed. Beat frosting on medium speed until cool, 5 to 10 minutes. The frosting should be thick and shiny.

more so than flowers, it is extremely important to keep them watered and fertilized on a regular basis. The flavor and texture of your vegetables will be greatly affected by low fertility and irregular watering. This can leave your vegetables tasting less sweet, bitter or tough. Just keep in mind that plants grown in containers will dry out faster and use up nutrients quicker. If you plan well your container vegetable garden will produce a delectable, sweet harvest, and not a tough and stringy one that you will actually voluntarily want to give to the deer.

SNIPPETZ™ HEALTH AND WELLNESS ANSWER: The Achilles’ tendon connects the calf muscles, soleus and gastrocnemius, to the heel bone, the calcaneus. A complete rupture usually happens with a sudden, forceful contraction of the calf muscles, such as jumping, often in sports. The diagnosis usually is made by physical exam. It’s not always as obvious as it might seem: Some people with a complete rupture can still walk, and some people have no pain. Still, an experienced examiner should be able to diagnose a complete tear. An ultrasound or MRI is sometimes used DEAR DR. Should I be concerned about these variations in systolic pressure? -*** J.S.

WHICH BLOOD PRESSURE READING IS RIGHT?

ANSWER: Having a patient who gets multiple values, thinks about what it means and cares enough to ask is a real pleasure for a physician. This degree in blood pressure variation is well within the expected norm. Your systolic pressure (the top number, and the peak blood pressure while the heart is expelling blood from the left ventricle into the aorta) is about 136, plus or minus seven points. Having multiple readings increases the precision of the measurement and allows your physician to make better decisions about the effectiveness of your treatment regimen. Your systolic number, however, is in the range of prehypertension, so your doctor will be keeping an eye on that.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard that magnesium destroys vitamin B, and vitamin B keeps you warm. I am cold all the time. I take magnesium for a delayed heartbeat. Do you think that magnesium is my problem? -- H.A. ANSWER: I also have heard that vitamin deficiencies, including B vitamins and vitamin D, can lead to intolerance of cold. However, I couldn’t find much good scientific evidence to support that, and none at all that magnesium causes problems with vitamin absorption or activity.

Low thyroid, hypothyroidism, is the first condition to come to mind with cold intolerance, and anemia is the second. • Before modern medical techniques became common, it was not unusual for people to be inadvertently buried alive. In 1819, the Doctor Regent of the Faculty of Medicine in Paris estimated that one-third to one-half of people who died in bed were, in fact, still alive when they were interred. This led to the invention of the “security coffin,” which was connected to a monitoring station by a long tube. If the presumed corpse did regain consciousness, food and drink could be transported through the tube while the coffin was exhumed. • In ancient China, snail shells were used as currency. *** Thought for the Day: “Good humor is a tonic for mind and body. RETIREMENT YOUR WAY WITH A SELF-DIRECTED IRA

L

ike the idea of paving your own investment path? If you want to stay away from Wall Street, self-directed IRAs could be your retirement investment vehicle.

Tina A common example of this strategy is investing in a rental. The account owner can direct the IRA to purchase a house, rent it out, and the rental income goes back into the IRA account. But, the account owner cannot live in the house or receive rental proceeds from the IRA. Otherwise, the IRA tax deferred treatment is null and void.

You can also use a self-directed IRA to start a business! How cool is that? It must be a C-Corp, and there must be a Board of Directors that can essentially fire you since you need to have distance between you and the corporate funds (which came from your IRA). But those issues are surmountable and easily handled.

Ultimately, money that was reserved for retirement and the strict arm’slength rules must be preserved in all business transactions. Depending on the investment, further caution might be necessary, but the self-directed IRA is an incredibly savvy option.

Back to the rules, watch out for IRS prohibited transactions including buying a home to live in now, payments from IRA proceeds, guaranteeing account assets for loans, or extending loans and credit to a disqualified party (outside the scope of this article).

The Watson CPA Group is a progressive tax consultation and preparation firm embracing internet technology to provide worldwide tax service from offices in northern Colorado Springs, Colorado USA. For more information visit-

Unlike a traditional IRA, the selfdirected IRA invests in non-publicly traded alternatives. Investments can range from dairy cows and untapped gold mines to the most common asset investments of tax liens, mortgages, business start-ups, and real estate. Performance hinges upon the account owner’s investment choices, yet remains a tax deferred retirement account.

Not all firms can say they offer this consultative approach beyond the nuts and bolts of accounting and tax preparation.

If done right, the rewards could be sizable, but take the time to ensure the investment is legit and a good investment. Cross breeding cows might not be your expertise, but you might be more familiar with real estate or small business franchises. Just stay away from life insurance and collectibles - those are off limits according to IRS rules.

But no automobile manufacturer had an engine light enough and powerful enough for them to use, so they designed their own light weight 25 horsepower engine that powered two propellers through an innovative chain and sprocket assembly. Finally their fateful day came when all of their theories, all of their planning, all of their experimenting, and all of their hard work would come together. The engine was started by hand, Orville took his seat between the propellers, a heavy lead weight on a tower was tethered to the front

good idea. Expect a sharp rise in price within 14 days of a flight, an average $111 more expensive. Wait until the seven-day window and you could pay $174 more.

WHEN NOT TO BUY AN AIRLINE TICKET

N

obody wants to pay too much for airline tickets, but how can you know when it’s the best time to lock in your reservation? CheapAir.com surveyed 15,000 markets (that’s 5 million trips) to come up with the answers.

• Early booking: If you grab a seat the minute a flight is offered, you’ll likely pay at least $50 more. • Best time to book: One to four months in advance is the sweet spot when you’ll find your lowest price. Book more than 114 days before your flight and you’ll average $32 more. Schedule within 27 days of the flight and you’ll pay an average $47 more. • Holidays and summers: The rules are different here because the popular flights fill up quickly. For some destinations your best buy period can be up to 11 months ahead, when tickets first go on sale. Same for Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break. • The variables: The CheapAir survey didn’t take into consideration whether flights were direct or had stops with layovers.

It isn’t as easy as you might think. Your price is going to depend on your destination, the time of year, your travel days and more. Here are some of CheapAir’s conclusions that determine your price:

For more about getting the best airline ticket prices, go online to www. cheapair.com/blog and look for the blog entitled “When to buy airline tickets -- Based on 1.5 Billion Airfares.”

• When to buy: The price of an airline ticket can change a whopping 70 times while it’s for sale. However, an average of 47 days in advance will get you the best price.

When it’s time to buy, look at websites that show up when you search online for “cheap airfares” or similar parameters. See www.cheaptickets.com as a place to start.
