e all leave behind a legacy when we pass on. Some of us have lots of kids who have their own kids and our large family is our legacy. Others of us don’t have big families but our life’s work represents the legacy we leave behind. Consider famous sculptors, painters, musicians or writers. The same can be said for actors and actresses. Their craft of making movies and television shows is what solidifies their place in our minds long after they’re gone. Sometimes, we lose

President John F. Kennedy, as well as the iconic picture of her holding her dress down as air from a vent in the sidewalk blows it sky-high, Marilyn Monroe was yet another film star who met an untimely death. The last film she actually completed was “The Misfits,” released in 1961. Ironically, the creation of the film (and the drama therein) is often as memorable as the film itself. Considering that it was written by Monroe’s third husband, Arthur Miller, you could easily guess that there might be some tension, especially since the couple’s marriage was already headed towards a divorce. Tag on the fact that Monroe was said to be chronically late to everything and struggling with a drug addiction, it’s clear to see that the behind-the-scenes dysfunction added to the notoriety of the film. Sadly, Monroe died from a barbiturate overdose on Aug. 5, 1962 at the age of 36.

someone so iconic and talented that their passing almost defines their celebrity status as much as their performances do. Other times, we lose someone that has sort of always been a staple in lives through our favorite television show or movie and it feels like we’ve lost a member of the family. We at Snippetz know that, in many instances, these stars left us all too soon. So we decided to look back at the last movies they made, good or bad, to see if they went out with a whisper or a bang.

When you think of an iconic star that passed away at the height of his or her career, James Dean is likely to come to mind first and foremost. At 24 years old, Dean’s career had barely begun. He had already received great reviews for his starring roles in “East of Eden” and “Rebel Without a Cause.” But his life was cut short when, on Sept. 20, 1955, while on his way to an auto race in Salinas, California, Dean was involved in an accident and tragically died due to his injuries. He had finished filming his last movie, “Giant,” not long before the crash. The film featured a young ranch hand who struck it rich and became an oil tycoon. Over the course of the movie, Dean’s character aged about 30 years so he had his hair dyed gray to give the film some realism. But his hair was still gray when he died, which aged him in an unnerving way. “Giant” was a hit and Dean received Oscar nominations for Best Actor in both “Giant” and “East of Eden,” making him the first person in history to receive a posthumous nomination from the Academy.

KATHARINE HEPBURN Unlike our previous two stars, Katharine Hepburn didn’t die suddenly in a tragic accident. Her career was long and successful, earning six of her movies spots on the American Film Institute’s list of the Top 100 United States Love Stories, more than any other actress who appears on that list. Hepburn filmed her final movie, “Love Affair,” in 1994. The film told the story of a blossoming romance between

real-life couple Warren Beatty and Annette Benning, who also starred in the film. With four Oscars under her belt, Hepburn retired in the mid-1990s and died at home in 2003, at the ripe old age of 96.

JOHN BELUSHI Another star whose career was cut short is John Belushi, who found his start in show business on the television show, “Saturday Night Live,” in 1975. Many remember him as a Blues Brother, playing opposite Dan Aykroyd and securing a spot in the SNL hall of fame. Beyond that, Belushi had a successful, if short-lived acting career. He starred in the movies “1941” and “The Blues Brothers,” also with Aykroyd. Belushi’s last film, “Neighbors,” was a dark comedy about suburban life and also co-starred Aykroyd. It was released in 1981 and just three months later, on Mar.5, 1982, Belushi met an unfortunate end due to an overdose of cocaine and heroin. He was 33 years old.

career as a ballerina and model into one of an award-winning actress. In her first major role as Princess Ann in 1953’s “Roman Holiday,” Hepburn won the Oscar for Best Actress. Probably most memorable were her roles in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “My Fair Lady,” but she didn’t win any awards for those films. Hepburn did earn the distinction as one of only a few performers to win a Tony, an Emmy, an Oscar, and a Grammy Award. Her last film was “Always,” which was released in 1989. She died of cancer four years later at the age of 63.

CHRIS FARLEY Chris Farley found his claim to fame in the type-cast role of the overweight, awkward misfit who secured laughs with his physical comedy. Just as his idol Belushi had done, Farley’s big break came on the set of SNL. He cultivated his comedic talents into a string of successful movies including 1995’s “Tommy Boy.” Throughout his career, however, Farley battled addictions to drugs and alcohol, which took its toll on his working life. Filming of his last movie, 1998’s “Almost Heroes,” supposedly had to be put on hold several times while Farley attended rehab. Farley died on Dec. 18, 1997, shortly after completing the movie. Sadly, Farley died just as his idol had, due to an overdose of cocaine and heroin at the age of 33.

UNDERWHELMING LAST FILMS OF NOTEWORTHY STARS Not every movie a famous actor or actress makes can be a blockbuster. To be honest, some are complete flops, regardless of the celebrities who are involved in its creation. Here are a few of the less-successful last movies of some major stars. Don’t worry if you don’t recognize most of the movies on the list; we didn’t either! • “Big Bug Man” – released in 2004, this animated film was the last film to feature Marlon Brando. He played the voice of Mrs. (you read that right) Sour.

RAMADA INN • MONUMENT

• “Skidoo” – released in 1968, this film was 80-year-old Groucho Marx’s last movie. He played “God,” a mob boss.

30 DAY LONG TERM STAY SPECIALS KINGS $700 PER MONTH DOUBLES $900 PER MONTH SUITE $1100 PER MONTH

• “Trog” – released in 1970, this film was Joan Crawford’s last movie and featured her as a scientist who discovered a primitive caveman and tries to domesticate him. The theme was repeated in 1992’s “Encino Man” with much better results at the box office.

Also Available Banquets, Weddings, Conferences

• “Fievel Goes West” – released in 1991, this animated film, while not necessarily a flop, didn’t quite provide the level of fame to Jimmy Stewart as his previous films. Perhaps even more depressing is that Stewart’s last role ever was as a dog sheriff named “Wylie Burp.”

ow many parents find themselves in competition? That is competition with other parents, their partner, even their own parents? Why is that? Have we, as a global society, been taught to judge, compare, and try to be ‘better than’ others in specific ways? We sure have! It’s time to stop buying into to that teaching. It only creates harm in one form or another. When we compare ourselves to others, someone always comes up short. At some point, we come up short. We can compare our parenting style to another parent and decide,

People compare and judge all the time, but we don’t have to. It’s not true that we need to compare ourselves to others to improve our own lives. It’s the opposite. Someone always has more money, more options, better listening skills, better behaved kids, a better career or job, nicer car, access to better schools, and so on and so on. When we stop placing our worth as a parent in the potential opinion of others, we can then focus on what is important.

SNIPPETZ™ DINING GUIDE food is delicious, whole and healthy. It’s more than a plan; it’s a way to respect and care for our bodies while enjoying a good meal. This recipe for Trout Veracruz is based on a Mexican seafood favorite from the port city of Veracruz. It’s a colorful, nutritionpacked, one-skillet meal that is easy to prepare and fits in beautifully with the DASH diet regimen.

A MAD “DASH” TO A HEALTHY DIET

E

very year, the gluttony of the holidays combined with our good intentions for a new year have us making over our grocery lists, our pantries and our diets. Since the beginning of mass media and modern food production, there have been “fad” diets -- recipes and meal plans to help you do everything from simply losing weight to fighting off major illnesses. In the United States we have either too much food and are inclined to eat poorly, or we have too little of it and are forced by circumstances to eat poorly. People who find themselves eating out are frequently served portions that exceed dietary recommendations and are overloaded with fat, protein and carbs. Those on limited incomes may be eating out, but it’s most likely fast food or less expensive, highly processed foods. In the end, we all eat to live, and our diets are a vital part of our physical health. It’s important for everyone to make the best food choices possible. Some people are disciplined enough to eat modest amounts of whole foods. Others, however, appreciate more guidance, and that’s where a diet plan comes in. When considering a specialized diet, make sure it’s based on studied and proven science. It’s also important that the diet is one you begin as a plan but continue as a long-term way of thinking about food and eating. The DASH diet (which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) was developed through research funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health as a way to lower blood pressure and reduce the use of medication. Studies dating back to its inception in 1993 show that it’s an effective way to lose weight and reduce the risk of many diseases. The DASH diet plan offers a path to change eating habits and improve health. It’s also a simple, delicious and a sustainable approach to healthy eating. The key to the DASH plan is portion size and a wide variety of foods with proper nutrients. The

SNIPPETZ™ HEALTH AND WELLNESS who are less likely to be helped by any treatment. I have not found any evidence that laser treatment is effective.

CARPEL TUNNEL SYNDROME KEEPS GETTING WORSE DEAR DR. ROACH: I had surgery on my right wrist for carpal tunnel syndrome eight months ago. The numbness in my fingers has not changed. Now I’m faced with the same problem in my left hand. I’m going to forget surgery, seeing as it wasn’t successful in my right hand. I decided to go to an acupuncturist for laser treatments. I also had a cortisone shot. Neither of these has helped. Do you know of a solution for my problem? -- P.M.

My advice is to first be sure of the diagnosis. An EMG test is a study of nerve function, which can confirm the diagnosis and may be able to predict how much damage there is and provide guidance on treatment. If damage is not too severe, other treatments -- such as splinting, medication, yoga or ultrasound -- may be helpful. If advanced, surgery done quickly still may be your best bet. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: There has been much reporting of the effect of not getting enough sun during the winter months. In your professional opinion, can some people get depressed from too much summer? When I lived in the Southwest, all that heat and sun from May to October seemed to really get to me. I wished often for a cloudy day. Is it because I was raised in the depressing North? -- J.R.W. ANSWER: Seasonal affective disorder is a type of major depression with recurrent seasonal onset and remission. Although it usually is described as beginning in late fall and early winter, and going away in spring or summer, some people can have symptoms that begin in spring and go away in fall. People with spring-onset SAD more frequently have insomnia, poor appetite and weight loss.

ANSWER: Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression on the median nerve, as it runs down the arm through a “tunnel” of bone and connective tissue deep in the wrist. It may cause pain, numbness and weakness of the wrist and hand. The thumb and middle three fingers are most often affected. In advanced cases, the hand muscles may become atrophied. The sooner the pressure on the nerve is relieved, Light therapy is used only for fallthe more likely there will not be per- onset SAD. However, it’s possible that the diagnosis was wrong or that the surgery *** might not have been effective, even Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer if done promptly. At least one study of needle acupuncture showed that it is as effective as a cortisone injection. This study excluded people who already had fixed numbness in the fingers,

PIKES PEAK POSSE OF THE WESTERNERS PRESENTS: Wasp of the Ferry Command by Sarah Rickman March 9, 6:00 pm Colorado Springs Masonic Hall 1130 Panorama Drive Colorado Springs, Colorado. 80904

The story of the WASP who ferried aircraft for the Air Transport Command is the real WASP story, in the opinion of this author/historian. Usually it is overshadowed by the popular, glamorized version of the WASP story — the story of Jackie Cochran’s 1,000 girl pilot recruits and their trials and tribulations. My presentation is about the 303 WASP of the Ferry Command, and in particular about the 126 WASP who ferried pursuit aircraft like the P-51 from the factories to the docks for shipment abroad. The P-51s those women delivered throughout 1944 ended up escorting American bombers all the way to Berlin and back, protecting them from German attack. Ultimately this key factor led to the defeat of Nazi Germany May 8, 1945. Sarah Byrn Rickman, a former journalist, has been researching the WASP — the women who flew for the U.S. Army in World War II — and following their activities for 23 years. She has five published books about the WASP. Her newest book — her second WASP novel — is Flight to Destiny. The story won the Greyden Press Best Novel Competition in 2013, and was published in June 2014. Sarah serves as a WASP historian and the editor of the WASP Newsletter for the WASP Archives at Texas Woman’s University. She is a licensed sport pilot, who with her husband, reside in Colorado Springs.
