New Year’s Superstition... Continued from Page 1

of mystery that surrounds the start of the New Year that many people aren’t willing to leave their fate to chance. In fact, many New Year’s traditions are more like superstitions and that got us wondering: what traditions do people carry on during this time and why do they do them? So come along with us as we lift

Common New Year’s traditions (or are they superstitions?)

KISSING AT MIDNIGHT

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a tradition as follows: a way of thinking, behaving, or doing something that has been used by the people in a particular group, family, society, etc., for a long time. Traditions are an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought, action, or behavior. So when we go outside to watch the fireworks from Pikes Peak because we’ve always done so, that’s obviously a tradition. It’s a customary pattern of action.

One of the most well-known New Year’s traditions in Western culture is to kiss your special someone (or maybe that cute stranger you’ve been eyeing all night) at the stroke of midnight. Have you ever wondered what is behind that? The hopeless romantics out there might say that it’s because you can say that technically speaking, you kissed someone from one year into the next. That does sound sweet. But looking back, this tradition actually stemmed from a superstition that claims that if you fail to kiss someone at midnight, you’ll spend the next year alone. By kissing someone, you are ensuring their affections for the next twelve months. For some of us, spending a year alone doesn’t sound so bad. For others, it’s enough to prompt us to grab the nearest man or woman and lay one on them.

The dictionary defines a superstition as follows: a belief or way of behaving that is based on fear of the unknown and faith in magic or luck. It’s a belief that certain events or things will bring good or bad luck. When you shy away from breaking that awful mirror in your bathroom as you’re remodeling it, it could be because you’ve heard that it will bring you seven years of bad luck. That’s a superstition since there’s no way to really prove that doing so will undoubtedly bring you bad luck. What you’re afraid of is the possibility that it could happen; you’re afraid of the unknown.

STOCKING UP ON FOOD AND MONEY

So now that we know the difference between a tradition and a superstition, we have to ask ourselves one question: do you feel lucky, punk? Wait, not that question. The question is: are we doing things because they are a tradition or are we doing them out of superstition? Perhaps we don’t even know why we do them. Maybe we do them because our families have always done things that way. But looking back, it’s likely that we can determine the root of that

This tradition is not as well-known and is more likely to be seen by most people in Western culture as a superstition. The thought is that you shouldn’t ring in the New Year with an empty fridge, empty cupboards or an empty wallet. By stocking up with plenty to eat, drink and spend, you are ensuring a year of prosperity in your home. Of course, this may be easier said than done, but hey. Believe what you will!

PAYING OFF BILLS Some people believe that they have to pay all their bills before the first day of the New Year. If you have to write a check, it must be sent off before New Year’s Day. And don’t wait to pay back a debt until the New Year, either. The idea is that if you go into the New Year with debt or you spend any part of your New Year’s Day repaying a debt or loan, you’re guaranteeing that you will be doing that the rest of the year. Similarly, a superstition states that you shouldn’t lend out money on New Year’s Day either unless you want to spend the year bailing out your friends and family. From a practical sense, this may not be possible but this sounds like a really good idea, regardless of whether you believe in the superstition or not!

MAKING LOUD NOISES We’ve all been to a New Year’s party where the crowd seems to absolutely lose their minds as the clock approaches midnight. Perhaps you thought it was the combination of drinks and lots of people that resulted in the ruckus. But what’s with those obnoxious nose-makers and horns? Well, one superstition states that you need to make as much noise as possible as the clock strikes midnight, not only to celebrate but to scare away evil spirits. Supposedly, evil spirits and the Devil himself hate loud noises so you’re protecting yourself from these demons for the next year.

NOTHING GOES OUT We’ve all heard the expression, “Out with the old, in with the new.” This New Year’s Superstition... Continued on Page 3

is actually the theme behind one superstition of the New Year. The idea is that you are making room for the new and lucky by getting rid of the old and unwanted. But some superstitions go a step further to say that you can’t get rid of ANYTHING on New Year’s Day. The belief is that the year must begin with something being added to the household before something is taken from it to ensure prosperity.

superstitions such as those above rely on the idea that what you do on the first day of the New Year sets the stage for how your upcoming year will be. If you cry, your year will be filled with sadness. If you do something you’re good at and enjoy, you’re ensuring your year will be prosperous and happy.

SNIPPETZ™ WEEKLY MAGAZINE much more long-term effective to remove children from the situation, remove toys and privileges than spanking. Spanking can offer a short-term solution. It causes enough pain to get their attention, but doesn’t necessarily remedy the longterm situation.

PATHWAY PARENTING

by Samantha Weaver

• It was novelist Mary Ann Evans -- better known by her pen name, George Eliot -- who made the following sage observation: “Blessed is the man who, having nothing to say, abstains from giving wordy evidence of the fact.” • In the five-year span between 1946 and 1951, television ownership in the United States jumped from 10,000 to 12 million. • You probably don’t know the name Clara Peller, but if you were watching TV in the 1980s, you would almost certainly recognize her as the “Where’s the beef?” lady from fastfood chain Wendy’s incredibly successful ad campaign. You might be surprised to learn that Peller wasn’t an actress; she was a manicurist. A commercial producer named Joe Sedelmaier was shooting a different ad when he realized they needed a manicurist on site, so an assistant ran to a local beauty shop and returned with Peller. As soon as she greeted Sedelmaier with a gruff “How ya doin’?”, the producer realized that she had potential. He convinced Wendy’s to create an entire campaign around the octogenarian. The gamble paid off; the restaurant’s sales jumped by 15 percent almost as soon as the ads began to run.

TEMPER TANTRUMS

The key point is to remain consistent. Children learn how to get what they want. They know which parent will give in and which one will not. We do that as adults too. If we want something from a supervisor, we’ll probably ask the supervisor who’s most willing to give it. If we get pulled over by the police for speeding, we’re probably hoping that police officer is in a good enough mood to offer a warning and not a ticket. So parents can understand how kids think.

M

ost parents can remember the experience of children’s temper tantrums. The memory of tantrums can be from yesterday or many years ago. They’re not easy to forget! I remember my daughter having a serious meltdown at a store when she was around age five. I picked her up and we left the store as she cried and screamed all the way to the car. As I recall, I wasn’t buying her what she wanted.

Be consistent in communicating boundaries and what is acceptable behavior. For most families, throwing food across the room, throwing toys and other items is not an acceptable way to express frustration. For very

Some parents choose to spank their children. Personally, I’ve found it

• TV’s Gilligan’s island was created in the middle of an artificial lake at CBS Studios in Hollywood. The cost of construction was $75,000. • The next time you’re at a hockey game, be sure to watch out for stray pucks; they travel through the air at speeds of up to 100 mph. • There is a species of ant found in Australia and Tasmania that, in some cases, can kill a human with a single sting. ***

young children, this is the usual method of frustration expression. Children do not begin consciously thinking about how to react until probably close to age three or four sometimes. As they age, they choose their reaction based upon prior experience. Children want what they want. If parents give their children what they want every time they have a meltdown, then that is the standard that is being set. The child can easily figure out cause and effect. Being consistent requires patience. It also requires the parents to understand how they want to respond to their child’s meltdown. Have a method in place. Is it time-out? Losing toys? Bed early? Then stand by it. Children will always try to test the boundaries, it doesn’t mean the parents have to get angry or react in a harsh way. Be consistent, patient, and firm with what you’re trying to teach your children. It will stick over time. SNIPPETZ™ DINING GUIDE

LET US EAT CAKE When they hear the words “Christmas cake,” many people shudder and wonder how they’ll manage to choke down Aunt Geneva’s infamous fruitcake. Old fashioned as they are, though, Christmas cakes are for those of us who love the traditional foods of the holidays every bit as much as the newly invented confections. And while it’s true that some fruitcakes are hard to love, others are a glamorous and -- yes -delicious offering that reflects cherished customs and flavors that have been passed down for generations. The first Christmas cakes were created in Britain and began life as something else entirely. Around the 16th century, during the early days of Christmas, a porridge was made to which dried fruits were added. By the 1800s, with the availability of flour, eggs and sugar, that simple cereal treat transformed into something more sophisticated. Over time, bakers spun the recipes into light and dark cakes, full of dried and candied fruit, or versions containing only nuts. The French interpretation of a Christmas cake was a fussy, beautiful Bûche de Noél. The recipe differed from tradition because it didn’t contain fruit. Instead, a sponge cake filled with chocolate buttercream was rolled to look like a Yuletide log. It is still a scrumptious showstopper today. In America, we have continued making these heritage recipes and added a few of our own. There is nothing that says “holidays” more than a striking Red Velvet Cake; a Southern Lane Cake, filled with candied fruit sandwiched between light fluffy layers of white cake; a moist Apple Cake heady with spice; or your favorite variety of Coconut Cake. A cake at Christmas is a treat worthy of the holiday, whether it’s an antique recipe or a new one like my recipe for Chocolate Candy Cane Cake. Nothing says “Celebration” like a slice of Christmas cake, the perfect holiday indulgence.

CHOCOLATE CANDY CANE CAKE This simple, fudgy cake is the perfect go-to dessert for the holidays. 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into small pieces, plus more for pan 8 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped 1 1/4 cups sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 large eggs 1/2 cup low-fat buttermilk 1 cup all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled), plus more for pan 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking powder Candy Cane Icing (recipe below) Whipped cream (optional) 1. Butter and flour an 8-inch round cake pan; line bottom with parchment or waxed paper. 3. Place butter and chocolate in a large heatproof bowl and place in the microwave on high for 20-30 seconds, watching carefully so that the chocolate doesn’t burn. Stir to combine. If the chocolate hasn’t fully melted, return bowl to microwave for another 10-20 seconds. Stir to combine, and set aside to cool 5 minutes. 4. Whisk sugar and vanilla into chocolate. Add eggs and buttermilk until combined. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, salt and baking powder until well-combined. Mix flour mixture, 1/2 cup at a time, into chocolate mixture until combined. 4. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake until cake pulls away from sides and a toothpick inserted in center has a few moist crumbs clinging to it, 45 minutes to 1 hour. Cool in pan 5 minutes. Run a knife around edge of cake; invert onto a wire rack (and leave inverted) to cool completely, about 1 hour. 5. Set cake on a serving platter. Tuck parchment or waxed paper under sides of cake (to keep platter clean). Pour icing onto center of cake. Use an offset spatula or dinner knife to spread evenly over the top and down the sides. Let set, about 30 minutes. 6. Sprinkle the top with crushed candies and chocolate shavings, if desired. Place remaining small candy canes on top for decoration, if desired. Let it set, about 40 minutes. Sprinkle top of each slice with crushed candies, chocolate shavings and small, whole candy canes, along with a dollop of whipped cream, if desired. Makes 8 servings.

elp, it’s finally here – my last article in Snippetz. If this is catching you off guard then I’ve got two things to say to you. 1) You actually care? That’s amazing. I feel so horrible now for not writing this article anymore. 2) I warned that the end days were coming for Nick Snips when I briefly dropped a hint in an article titled The Accident, three short weeks ago. It’s funny because this whole thing came about accidently. Nearly six years ago I met George Wilkins at Rosie’s Diner in Monument, CO. Of course I’d heard of George, my mother had known him around town, like everyone else. But this was the first time I actually met him. In our very first encounter George told me

Your details have to be verified before you can make a bond purchase. Not surprisingly, bond sales have plummeted since the change. The website lists good reasons to go electronic: You can see all your bonds online and you don’t have to keep track of pieces of paper. You can redeem them and have the money wired to your bank account. You can change the bond’s registration name with the click of a few keys. And, if you have paper bonds, you can convert them to electronic. See www.savingsbonds.gov for more information. Keep in mind, however, that the current interest rate on Series EE bonds is 0.10 percent. Interest on even a simple savings account is higher. P.S. -- There is hope, however. much whatever I wanted in this column. Who gives that kind of freedom to a young rebel-writer with a snarky sense of humor and no degree? Well, George Wilkins did, because he believed in me. It’s one of the many reasons that I view him as a good man. But I digress, this last column isn’t about George.

that he’d heard “rumors” about me (I still don’t know what that means and deny any accusations). He asked me a few questions before providing me with a small part time job delivering Snippetz.

In these final words I wanted to address something bigger than Snippetz, small towns, and personal achievements. I want to start a dialogue about more than silly innovations, new technologies, or advancements in experimental medicine.

It was good for me. I had just moved back to my home town, with my head down. Things on the east coast didn’t pan out and I needed some source of income. This was me starting over. So I did it. I drove down to a warehouse in Colorado Springs on Sunday nights and picked up the load. That night, I’d drop off papers to the business’s that were closed on Mondays. The next morning I’d bring the bulk of the papers in, delivering them to the assigned area and chatting up local business owners, waitresses, and part timers.

Over the two years of Nick Snips I’ve talked about quirky news stories, professional sports, cultural problems, personal triumphs, and so much more. It made me wonder how I should end it. What would be a fitting finish to a column that had no clear direction from day one? Nick Snips has been a random series of thoughts. A small glimpse into the mind of a twentysomething starving artist getting by in the most relevant years of his life. It made me want to write something important; something worth reading, if just for one time.

About 6 months later, on a whim, I asked George if I could write in his paper. I had always been praised as a good writer by my teachers growing up. I figured I’d give it a shot. That’s when it started. Over the next five years I would write a sports column, human interest pieces, local spotlights, glorified advertisements, one restaurant review, and a column called Nick Snips. I could write pretty

So I came up with this: I don’t know if you believe in a God. I don’t know what you do to reas-

sure that faith or how it looks to you. Religion is a funny thing. It offends people just by bringing it up. Heck, I’m sure most of you are shocked I’ve even touched on this subject. Either way, whatever you believe and however you believe it, I want to ask you a question. After you read it you may shrug it off or find little meaning. But if you really dive in, it might change your life. You don’t even have to worship a God or go to church to answer the question. In fact, I’m not sure there even is an answer. Here it is: What if there are parts of God specifically made for you, which no one else can ever know? I didn’t come up with that. It was a good friend who said it. But it got me thinking. Hopefully I’ve done the same for you at some point over the last five years…

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS... OR NOT By Ron Ross

M

• • •

ost folks make at least of a couple of New Year’s resolutions. Here are some suggestions followed by the reality of everyday living: •

• • •

• •

“Let go of your guilt.” Are you kidding? You are guilty. If you had any sense of shame at all you would be totally depressed. “Channel your imagination into ever-increasing levels of creativity.” There are several good reasons for you to be consumed by suspicion and paranoia. “Walk a mile in a man’s shoes before you criticize him.” That way when you do criticize him he’ll be a mile away and barefoot. “Receive criticism with grace and dignity.” Unless it comes from a family member, a friend, an associate, or a stranger. “Don’t talk about other people.” Let’s see, I guess that means the only person we can talk about is me! “Never look back.” The traffic in front of you might suddenly slow down and you’ll rear-end somebody. “Be willing to share you’re experience and advice with those around you.” It’s so much fun being able to say later on, “I told you so.” “Do something that will increase your heart rate and improve your muscle tone.” Take your computer out in the garage and beat it to death with a tire iron. “Be willing to express yourself more openly.” Check state and local laws first. “If someone hurts you, forgive them immediately.” Meaningful and satisfying retaliation takes great thought and careful preparation. “Assume full responsibility for your actions.” Except those caused by oth-

ers. “Be more intuitive.” It might make up for your lack of intelligence and sound judgment. “Live each day with integrity.” If you do, does that mean you can live each night with corruption? “Celebrate each holiday just like you did when you were a child.” Your credit cards are all charged up, your house payment is late, and your car needs brakes. Face it: you can’t afford to celebrate the way you would like to. “Be brave in the face of danger.” On the other hand, cowardice is much easier and usually less painful. “Change your diet to include mainly health foods.” Unless you are old. Then you need all the preservatives you can get. “Relax more.” Unless you feel more comfortable tense. “Become a better communicator.” Otherwise, just shut up. “Get out there and try to change the world for the better.” But don’t you dare mess with the status quo. “Lose twenty pounds.” Here’s how: Take a two-week trip to Mexico, drink the water and eat the food. “Be sincere.” If you can’t, at least try to fake it. “Be yourself.” Unless you’re an idiot. “Get all of your temporal affairs in order.” After all, you may live another twenty years.

IRS EXAMINATIONS AND QUICKBOOKS IRS examinations are a joyous occasion for all! Yes, we are being sarcastic. But, if you use QuickBooks or other accounting software and are being examined by the IRS, we have some helpful tips.

Tina happened to be an accountant, blamed QuickBooks for falsifying income calculations. In a shocking development, Tax Court said No. A pattern of oopsies can easily be seen as a pattern of deceit. Claiming a business loss is much more fa-

vorable than a hobby loss because hobby losses have limits. How your books are kept during QuickBooks examinations is often a key determinant of how the loss is treated. Let’s use an example. DO NOT attempt to alter or delete data during or immediately preceding an examination. Ever watch Criminal Minds or the Blacklist? In a recent tax court case, the defendant, who

ods to maximize profitability rather than just recording data for taxes. In other words, use your accounting software to help increase sales and profits rather than memorializing your hobby.
