as well. They’re rumored to be big scaredy-cats (you’ve heard about them burying their heads in the sand, right?). Their long necks and spindly legs make them look, well, silly. But the truth is that the ostrich is a highly adapted species that has managed to find a way to live in climates that can vary as much as 100° between night and day. They can fight off fearsome predators like lions and hyenas using their powerful (and yes, still spindly) legs. So it is with great pleasure that Snippetz has decided to uncover some of the mysteries about these amazing birds!
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION In the beginning, ostriches occupied several areas in Africa, including north and south of the Sahara Desert, East Africa and Africa south of the rain forest belt. They also occupied the majority of Asia Minor. In modern times, ostriches prefer open land, sticking more to the savannas and the semiarid region of north-central Africa, south of the Sahara. In Southwest Africa, they inhabit the semi-desert or true desert areas.

If you’ve ever played hide-and-seek with a two-year-old who puts their hands in front of their face to hide, it’s kind of like that. But here’s the thing: ostriches don’t actually do this.
Those marvelous feathers, which help give ostriches a wing span of up to six and a half feet, also serve as rudders to help them change directions while running. Given that they can run up to 43 miles per hour, those rudders definitely come in handy when evading a predator. And let’s not forget how useful they are in mating displays . . .
There are a few theories about how this rumor got started. One attributes the rumor to Pliny the Elder, who lived from 23 to 79 A.D. who wrote that they “imagine, when they have thrust their head and neck into a bush, that the whole of their body is concealed.” But Pliny the Elder was probably misinterpreting one of two common behaviors displayed by the ostrich.
Their fluffy feathers do have a downside, however. Poachers are highly interested in killing them for their feathers (as well as their skin, which is used for leather and their meat) which they sell for decorative purposes and to make the stereotypical feather duster we always imagine a racy French maid would carry around.
Ostrich feet are different from the feet of other birds in one key characteristic: they only have two toes, while most other birds have four. The inner toe has a large nail while the outer toe lacks a nail altogether. The inner toe is also larger than the outer one and resembles a hoof. This unique adaptation is integral in the ostrich’s ability to run so quickly.
DO OSTRICHES REALLY BURY THEIR HEADS IN THE SAND?
BIRDS OF A FEATHER . . . As we mentioned before, the ostrich’s feathers are one of the most outstanding features on this interesting bird. You may recall that most birds have feathers that are rather sleek. In fact, most birds have feathers that have little hooks on them to keep them aligned with one another, making for increased aerodynamics and waterproofing. But ostriches don’t fly. They don’t need those little hooks, which is why their feathers appear so fluffy.

HOW TO EAT LIKE AN OSTRICH
• An adult ostrich typically carries around about two pounds of small stones in its stomach, which it has used to help grind up its food.
Ostriches can go for several days without drinking, even in their dry, hot habitat. The reason? The majority of the water they need comes from the moisture found in the plants they eat. In fact, they can survive a loss of up to 25 percent of their body weight through dehydration. Their diet typically consists of seeds, shrubs, grass, fruit and flowers, although it’s not unheard of for ostriches to eat insects like locusts.
• Measuring in at five centimeters across, the ostrich’s eye is the largest eye of any land animal. This allows them to see predators from a long distance away.
This brings us to another interesting point: could Pliny the Elder actually have witnessed an ostrich eating the leaves from the inner part of a bush and assumed (incorrectly) that the ostrich was attempting (very poorly) to hide? Hmmm, makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

• An ostrich can live 50 to 75 years. • At birth, baby ostriches called chicks can be as big as a fully grown chicken. • Ostriches can outrun most of their natural predators, with the exception of the cheetah. Typically, a predator has to catch one by ambushing an unsuspecting bird using its surroundings to hide it from sight. • An ostrich egg is the largest of all eggs laid by a bird; however, they are the smallest eggs relative to the size of the adult bird that laid it. The average ostrich egg is about six inches long and five inches wide, weighing in at about three pounds.

CONNECTING THROUGH PLAY

ost parents’ lives are quite busy. We’re either at work or staying home keeping the household running smoothly. There are events and meetings to attend, appointments to make, laundry to do, meals to prepare, home work to help with, and the shopping to do. Not to mention paying the bills and keeping the budget on track. All of this takes much effort and time through the weeks and months. It can be easy to forget to remember to play. If you have children and haven’t had time to get on the floor and play with them and their toys, make a commitment to do that very soon. Multiple events occur from the act of playing. You connect with your children on their level. At the same time, they may be surprised that you’re taking the time to play with them and they may appreciate it. It can also be a form of de-stressing. When we are wrapped up in our adult world of responsibilities, it
can keep us in a higher beta brain wave longer than is healthy and this signals stress. When we are under significant stress, the hypothalamus part of the brain signals the release of more cortisol. The adrenal gland produces the cortisol and when too much is being produced health difficulties begin. When we play and emotionally connect with our children, it can slow the brain waves, reduce stress and slow cortisol release. If you have teenagers and haven’t had time to interact with them on their level, go do something with them that they enjoy. Maybe it’s a theater movie, laser tag, a sporting event, mall shopping, or something else. When we connect with our kids on their ‘turf’, it can create a feeling of mutual respect and appreciation. Do we have children to simply watch them grow up very fast while we’re busy working? Or do we have children in order to connect and bond with another human being? Before you know it, children have grown up and are in college or out in the work force. They may move away to a different state and visit only once a year. Crush candies and place in the center of each cookie. 10. Bake in oven for about 10 minutes. 11. Let completely cool be removing from foil. This was a favorite cookie I used to make with my sisters and mom every year for Christmas. You can use any sugar or butter cookie recipe for these. I have even cheated by using Nestle’s Sugar cookie Shapes. Be creative, have fun and enjoy!!!

O
f all the traditional baked confections we associate with the holidays, probably none is more popular than the cookie. During the holiday season, old recipes are pulled out -- or special orders are placed -- for a staggering and beautiful array of cookies in all sizes, shapes, colors and flavors. America is a melting pot, and there is no time when this is more evident than the holidays. Cookies from around the world make appearances at family celebrations or as gifts for friends and neighbors. If you follow the cookie trail in the United States, it will take you back to Colonial times, when the first record of a recipe for a “Christmas Cookey” can be found. The ingredients listed in the American Cookery recipe of 1797 note flour, sugar, butter, milk, powdered coriander and “pearlash,” a leavening agent made by soaking fireplace ashes in water to produce lye. It was a jumping off point to what has become a long-held and much-loved tradition. Cookies were brought to our country by the Europeans who settled here. Christmas cookie trees were a German invention. Highly decorative shortbread or sugar cookies were a gift from the Dutch. As America grew, so did her immigrant population. Today, the cookies we bake during the holidays reflect not only our own family traditions, but those of a vast culinary history from all over the globe. Looking even further back to the origins of the cookie, we can start with a basic recipe for a sugar cookie or tea cake. Many other cookies recipes from around the world have evolved from these simple ingredients. It is believed that hundreds of years ago, sugar cookies originated with the process of testing a cake recipe. Small spoonfuls of batter were baked to check for flavor and consistency. Shortbread cookies began life in ancient times as slightly sweetened biscuits. From there -- with the additions of butter, fruits and chocolate, sprinkles and colored sugar -- things went wild. Modern cookies are an unlimited variety of textures and flavors from bacon to candy corn. Try this recipe for Three-in-One Drop Cookie Dough, which uses the basic recipe for sugar cookies to create three different flavors: Sweet Citrus, Oatmeal Raisin and Chocolate Chip. You can make 45 cookies (15 of each flavor) using the simple, delicious ingredients below. Happy holidays!

1. Preheat the oven to 325 F. 2. Line three baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside. 3. In the bowl of mixer (or using a bowl and a handmixer), set on medium speed, cream together the butter and sugars until light and fluffy -- approximately 5 minutes. Add eggs and vanilla extract and continue to mix one minute. Add flour, baking soda and salt, and continue to mix until wellcombined. 4. Divide the dough into three equal parts in three separate mixing bowls. Add the flavoring ingredients: the citrus zest in one bowl, reserving the sugar to sprinkle on top; the oatmeal and raisins in the second bowl; and the chocolate chips in the last bowl. Mix the ingredients in each bowl with a rubber spatula until well-combined. 5. Spoon teaspoon-sized drops onto the baking sheets, about 2 inches apart. Sprinkle the Sweet Citrus cookies with the sugar. 6. Bake each batch of cookies for 5 minutes, and rotate/turn the pan to bake the cookies evenly. Bake for another 3 to 5 minutes or until the cookies are golden brown and are slightly soft in the center. Let cool at room temperature. Makes 45 cookies (one batch of dough, 15 of each flavor).

ou’ve heard of the Mediterranean diet. It’s been linked to lower occurrence of diseases such as coronary heart disease, as well as lowered blood pressure and arthritis. The primary source of dietary fat for those who follow the diet is olive oil. Researchers at the University of Glasgow saw big improvements in the test scores of subjects who spent six weeks on a diet that included specific amounts of olive oil. They concluded that it’s the phenolic compounds (polyphenols) that reduce the risk of heart disease. If your doctor thinks you should add olive oil to your diet, here are a few things to know: • Shop for extra virgin olive oil, with a first cold press. The majority of the polyphenols are extracted during that first press. The more refined the oil, the fewer polyphenols it contains.

ave you ever lived in an apartment? Chances are high that you have; most people had/wanted to at one point in their lives. In fact, many of you reading this probably live in an apartment complex or townhome right now. I had somehow never found myself living in an apartment, until now. My least favorite thing about living in an apartment versus a single family home is the notices you get from the office managers. It seems about every couple of weeks I come home to some piece of paper pinned on my door. It’s different every time, but usually inconvenient. This week, like so many times before, I found myself staring at another piece of paper while juggling my keys. This time, it was a notice from pest control. I want to make clear before I go any further – we don’t have a bug problem at our unit. This was simply a precaution to avoid ever having a bug problem. Nor-

We should, however, learn to be wiser about these powerful emotional reactions. Why must our self-loathing only come on the first day of the year as the result of a hangover and a regrettable evening out? We should be more emotionally available to ourselves on a day to day basis.
So there we were, at 10 o’clock on a Wednesday night frantically trying to clear out our entire kitchen so that some stranger can make it smell like poison for a couple of minutes. We had to clear space for this great expedition, so we were essentially rearranging our entire apartment.
What I’m trying to say, a few short weeks from Christmas, is this – don’t get too high or low this holiday season. Enjoy your celebrations and dinners and don’t beat yourself up too bad when it’s all over. If you want to make important changes in your life, forget New Years – start today. Make yourself better every day. Somewhere in that place, you’ll find happiness. It doesn’t matter who you are right now. There’s always hope. Take it from a guy who just had to clear out his kitchen and bathroom, everything can be put back together. That includes you. I
f you attended a university level sociology or philosophy class sometime in the last thirty years you may have sat through lectures about truth, morality, and knowledge. You were probably taught with great authority that what may be true for one person may not be true for someone else. The idea that each individual could create their own truth and that there are no moral absolutes possibly sounded good! There is a cartoon of a professor declaring, “There are no absolutes!” In the next frame a student asks, “Are you sure?” In the third frame the professor responds, “Absolutely.” You may chuckle at the absurdity, but the cartoon is no joke because it demonstrates the contradiction in logic of what professors of postmodernism teach. They teach as an absolute truth that there are no absolutes truths. Does that make sense to you? Could I believe that tomorrow morning the sun will rise in the west (my truth) and you believe it will rise in the east (your truth)? Would one of us be “wrong”? Not if there is no such thing as absolute truth, not if nothing is particularly wrong or anything particularly right. You may have accepted as true this odd way of thinking about truth. After all, it sounds so intellectual, so cerebral, especially if your professor gently stroked his bearded chin and gazed upward while speaking in wistful honeyed tones.
But think about it for a moment: The idea that the concept of relative truth is an “absolute” is ridiculous on its face. It is selfcontradicting. Common sense logic does not allow for something to be relative and absolute at the same time.

Thus, the first enemy of the mind is misinformation, half-truths, lies, and distortions. What happens when millions in a society no longer believe in absolute truth? The society deteriorates. Citizens become confused, and incapable of believing that anything they hear, see, touch, experience or think is really true, really there. People think they can lie to each other and break laws with impunity, even those who have taken an oath to protect and defend them. Promises such as “I do” can be broken with no shame, apology or guilt. Social norms are perceived as obsolete, morality is malleable, and all laws are individually adaptable. Societal rot sets in. This enemy of the mind is not new. Disinformation, false teaching and lies have been used to corrupt minds and deceive people since Satan lied to Adam and Eve about the impact of a single piece of fruit. Let me give you an easy test: Can you think of any time that rape should be considered socially acceptable? If you are committed to relativity, the idea that there are no moral absolutes like the professor in the cartoon declared, you must answer “yes” and then provide an example or two of when rape should be agreeable and even enjoyable for the victim. On the other hand, if you believe rape is always wrong – you believe in moral absolutes, you believe in ultimate truth. Defend your mind against the enemy of disinformation, lies and false teachings with truth – real truth, timeless truth. It does exist.

• On Dec. 18, 1620, the British ship Mayflower docked at modern-day Plymouth, Massachusetts, and its passengers prepared to begin their new settlement, Plymouth Colony. That winter of 1620-1621 was brutal, and the Pilgrims struggled to find food and ward off sickness.
