Start with one area of the room, one drawer or one pile. If the problem is finding where to put things, then start with cleaning out one file cabinet drawer. Just because it’s filed away doesn’t mean that it needs to be there forever. Pull everything out at once and go through each file and piece of paper to see what can be thrown out, shredded or recycled. Chances are you will find new space for more “stuff.”

Some records should become permanent fixtures in the files: • Articles of incorporation, stock and bond records, bylaws and minutes, contracts/agreements and legal correspondence; • Annual financial statements, general ledger, auditors’ reports and journals (cash receipts, disbursements, general and purchase journals); • Copyrights, trademarks, patents and servicemarks; • Mortgage deeds; and • Profit sharing/pension records.

Most employee and insurance records should be kept for six years, and employee accident reports and injury claims should be kept for 11 years.

Any employee medical records involving toxic substance exposure should be kept for 40 years.

Keep in mind that most magazines, journals and research materials can be accessed online, so no need to keep those dust collectors and space eaters around for eternity. And chances are you won’t need 12 yogurt containers to store extra pens, pencils and paperclips.

It will be great for setting up filing systems and you can drive the rest of your household crazy when you put labels on everything that doesn’t move. Now is the time to decide if you want color-coded files because you’ll need to purchase plenty of file folders. How about those desk drawer dividers for storing paper clips, pens and a limited number of rubber bands? For the desktop, do you need an in-basket, a stacking basket set and/or a Bose docking station for your ipod?

First, take everything off the desk except for your computer and telephone. Grab a dust cloth and apply to the desktop. Wouldn’t it be nice if it looked like this all the time? If you can, try to keep everything off the desk for a few days and just take out what you need when you need it. Once you pick up a piece of paper, file or office supply and use it, think about where it makes sense to store it. You might want your scissors, stamps and stapler in the desk drawer. But, paperwork could be put in a file folder and placed in the file cabinet if not used daily; or, if it is used daily, the file drawer in the desk might be the most efficient place.

FILING SYSTEMS – YUK! Filing systems don’t need to be complicated. Think about how you do your work. Do you think of your job as working on various projects or by different clients? Does it make more sense to file by client name, project name or subject? Maybe it’s a combination of different types of systems. There are no rules here – do what works for your work style.

Imagine your funeral is being held and you are able to hear what people say about you. No doubt your mate will speak first. Then your children, siblings, parents, neighbors, co-workers, clients, friends, and even your enemies will rise to share their regard of you. What will they say? More importantly, what do you want to hear them say about you?

Whatever it is that you want to hear people say about you at your funeral is your personal vision.

Most people spend more time thinking about what they are going to do on any given weekend than they do about who they are today and the kind of person they want to be in the future.

Well, my friend, If you are going to be ready for the boom that is sure to come you need to begin today to verbalize your personal vision statement.

When you see your future, you make it happen. When you verbalize your vision, when you speak it forth in simple words that you and all the important people around you understand, you in-

Anyone who had Direct Express with JPMorgan Chase should have received a letter saying the program was coming to an end in September.

Your personal vision is you no matter where you are or whom you’re with or what you have gained or lost in life. It is you when no one is watching and it is you when the lights go up and the cameras are on. It is you in the morning and the evening and the middle of the night. If you never received your letter, here are some steps to protect your money:

• Spend all the money on the JPMorganChase card (no further deposits will be made there), or have the money directed to a regular Chase account (877-789-5895).

• Make new arrangements for where you want the money to go, and tell Social Security (1-800772-1213). If you didn’t make arrangements by the cutoff date (when your October benefits are due to be paid), that money was sent back to Social Security.

• Open a Direct Express card account with the new company, Comerica Bank, or arrange for the money to go into a regular account elsewhere. If you want direct deposit to your own bank, call the Treasury’s Go Direct call center toll-free at 1-800-333-1795.

For those of us with a bank account, there’s something to be said for plain old direct deposit at a bank we’re already using, perhaps where we’ve had an account for many years.

TOO TIRED TO EXERCISE Q: After a long day at work I am exhausted and too tired to exercise.

I know I need to do some type of exercise, but I am not sure what I can do being so drained. How can I start exercising even though I am tired?

A: Hectic lifestyles can often leave you feeling as if you are too tired to exercise; however, a lack of exercise may be adding to your fatigue.

Research has shown that not only can exercise help fight fatigue, it also can help increase energy levels and improve sleep.

Low-intensity exercise such as walking at a steady but comfortable pace is a great place to start. Walking just a few times a week to start can begin to increase your energy levels and allow you to be less tired throughout your day. Be patient and begin to incorporate moderate exercise into your schedule.

Fighting the urge to skip the gym or deciding not to exercise can be a challenge at first; however, the more you begin to add exercise into your schedule and begin to see results, the more of a habit it will become.

Participating in regular exercise is

the key, and forming these habits may take time.

Begin with an activity you enjoy, and start slowly. Many exercisers have found that although they may have felt tired at the start of their workout, by the end they feel more energetic and alert. Set aside time in your schedule and try to stick with the plan. The more your body experiences and becomes accustomed to exercising, the more you can adapt to new expended calories and the good stress on your body.

This same effect has been linked to improvements in sleep quality among people who work out.

In studies, regular exercisers have experienced increased feelings of alertness throughout the day after recording improved quality of sleep.

They attribute this to an ongoing exercise program several times a week.

1. Separate yolks from whites and cream yolks with sugar and salt.

2. Slowly add oil into yolk mixture while mixer is going.

3. Add buttermilk, pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice and mix well.

4. Add flour, baking powder, and baking soda and mix well.

5. Whip egg whites until stiff peaks form and fold into the batter.

6. Spoon onto hot griddle that has been lightly buttered.

7. Flip when edges become dry and bubbles start to appear in the center and pop.

t’s fall and pumpkins are already at the store so I thought this would be a great way to start the season. Serve with real maple syrup and butter. If you want to add some nuts, sprinkle walnuts or pecans onto each pancake before flipping. I used canned pumpkin because it was easier but you can always cook down a pumpkin and puree it. The batter will last several days in the refrigerator and is even better after it sets a day.

Separating the eggs make the batter much more fluffy but you can cream the whole eggs with the sugar and salt and skip step 5 if time is an issue.

How did you gain all the weight initially, and when did you have that moment in time when you realized you had to lose it?

“I began gaining weight when I was around 8 years old. I had a very sedentary lifestyle, and my world revolved around playing video games and eating. I began needing more and more food to fill me up, and I’d think about eating all day long. My dad is a family physician, but I didn’t listen to him or other doctors. At age 20, I hit 400 pounds and wore a 60-inch-waist pair of pants. It was time to do something.”

How did you get started with your Subway diet? Was it something you just came up with?

“I tried every way imaginable to lose weight. Nothing worked. In my junior year of college I moved out of the dorm into an apartment right next to a Subway location.

I always liked their food. I had this crazy idea of eating only two Subway sandwiches a day. A turkey sub for lunch and a veggie sub for dinner. No mayo, no greasy chips ... making the meals as ‘low fat’ as possible. I knew what I was going to eat every day. I lost almost a hundred pounds in three months! I began to exercise, starting with light walking. It took me only a year to lose close to 250 pounds. My life was changed forever.”

• Don’t overuse credit cards. Credit card marketers aggressively target college students, so you’ll need to be vigilant about all the offers that will bombard you. While it might not be a bad idea to carry a single credit card for use in emergencies, it’s very easy to over-use the “plastic” and rack up big debts. You’ll need to discipline yourself to save for the things you want, rather than charging them.

• Shop around for financial services.

You’ll find plenty of banks willing to give you a T-shirt or a frying pan for opening an account with them.

But these places may not be offering you the best deal on checking or savings accounts or loans. It pays to shop around.

• Keep track of your student loans.

Make sure you understand all the terms of your student loans: how much you’re expected to pay each month, when payments are due, what interest rate you’re paying, what credits may be available for on-time repayment, etc. You might be able to achieve a more favorable repayment schedule by consolidating two or more loans. Once you start repaying your loans, do whatever you can to stay on track with your payments.

• Never stop looking for financial aid. The aid package you may have received as an incoming freshman doesn’t have to be the final word on financial assistance. Colleges offer some scholarships based on college-level academic achievement or real-world experience — both of which you may have accumulated since your freshman year. Study your college’s scholarships and be aggressive in going after them.

• Estimate your future income. You may not know exactly what you want to do when you graduate, but if you have a career path in mind, try to learn what sort of salary you can expect during your first few years out of college. Once you have a realistic idea of how much you’re going to earn, you may have the motivation you need to avoid bad financial practices, such as accumulating big debts.

College should be a learning experience — in many ways. And if some of the knowledge you obtain during your college years can help you develop sound financial habits, so much the better.

GET YOUR HOME READY FOR OLD MAN WINTER

ow that many parts of the country have had a taste of the coming winter, it’s a good time to give your home a final check before cold weather settles in.

• If you haven’t had an annual inspection on your furnace, have it done before you’re depending on it on a daily basis. At the very least, change the filter and buy a few spares.

• Windows cause some of the biggest heat losses in a house. Check for drafts (hold a candle in front of the window and look for flickering) and install “invisible” plastic sheeting or put up insulated drapes. The sheeting is especially good at blocking drafts, instead of allowing the cold air to flow to the floor, as drapes will.

• If you have a fireplace you won’t be using for heat with an insert, consider blocking it so that all your heat doesn’t go up the chimney. As heat rises, more cold air is drawn into the house.

n Colorado alimony or spousal support is referred to as “maintenance”. The availability of maintenance is determined by a list of statutory factors such as the length of the marriage. The goal of maintenance is to place the spouse who gets it in a position where that person will eventually be able to pay their own way without assistance. Another goal is to enable the receiving spouse to maintain a lifestyle similar to that enjoyed during the marriage.

The two basic components of a maintenance analysis are a spouse’s need for financial help and the other spouse’s ability to pay. Cases often involve a party with an obvious need for maintenance, but if the other party cannot afford to pay it and meet their own needs, maintenance will not be awarded. It is an unfortunate fact of life that two households cost one-third more to operate than one does. Many couples are in financial difficulty. This is a big factor causing divorces. If a couple is in financial difficulty, it is less likely that a divorce will include a maintenance award, however great one of the party’s need may be.

A big issue regarding maintenance is the length of time it will be paid. The duration of the award really depends on how long it will take the receiving party to become self-supporting. Each case turns on its own facts. Assuming that the receiving party is in

• Use ceiling fans on slow reverse speed to move warm air off the ceiling and down into the room.

• An additional layer of insulation in the attic, either blown or rolls, will help keep the heat in the living levels. Insulate around the access hatch, too.

• A space heater can be a good source of temporary heat for a small space if you don’t want to heat the whole house -- for example, while watching TV in the evening. If you plan to buy a space heater, do your homework and study the different types: convection, radiant, tower, rotating, fan forced, electric, kerosene, oil filled and others. Safety can be a serious issue with many types, such as kerosene, while others are known to consume a lot of electricity for the amount of heat they produce. Before you buy, check online reviews for the model you’re considering. Look at Consumer Report for October 2007 as a place to start.

• Check wall switches and outlets for drafts on exterior walls, and install insulation pads.

• Check your dryer vent at the outside of the house.

If it doesn’t close completely when the dryer isn’t running, you can end up with cold floors and frozen pipes in your laundry room.

good health and under no disabilities, a broad estimate would be that the duration of the award would not be greater than one-third the length of the marriage.

Maintenance usually ends automatically upon the death or re-marriage of the receiving party, or the death of the paying party. This must be so in order for the payment to qualify as alimony under IRS regulations. Alimony that qualifies under IRS regulations is deductible (a reduction from gross income to adjusted gross income) to the payor and is income to the payee. Tax consequences of maintenance awards should be analyzed prior to entering any agreement to pay it.

Some parties may be eligible for temporary maintenance. Temporary maintenance covers a party’s need for support from the time the case is filed until the final orders are entered and the case is completed. The Legislature has provided a formula for determining the presumptive amount of temporary maintenance where the parties combined yearly gross incomes is $75,000 or less. This amount is 40% of the monthly income of the higher income party, less 50% of the monthly income of the lower income party. The presumption regarding the amount of temporary maintenance can be overcome by proving that it would be unfair.

Maintenance/alimony law is the same as other law.

You must remember that: you may not understand the law; you may not like it; and you may not think its fair; but it’s the law!

MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On Oct. 10, 1845, the United States Naval Academy opens in Annapolis, Md., as the Naval School. The school officially became the U.S. Naval Academy in 1850, when a new curriculum went into effect, requiring midshipmen to study at the academy for four years and to train aboard ships each summer.

• On Oct. 6, 1866, the Reno gang carries out the first robbery of a moving train in the U.S., taking more than $10,000 from an Ohio & Mississippi train in Jackson County, Ind. Previously, holdups had taken place only on trains sitting at stations or freight yards.

• On Oct. 7, 1913, for the first time, Henry Ford’s entire Highland Park, Mich., automobile factory is run on a moving assembly line, cutting the manhours required to complete one “Model T” from 12 1/2 hours to six. Within a year, further improvements slashed the time to 93 man-minutes.

• On Oct. 9, 1934, the St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Detroit Tigers in the seventh game of

the World Series. The Cardinals’ “Gashouse Gang” nickname had to do with the team’s close resemblance to the rowdy, dirt-streaked thugs who hung around the Gashouse District on Manhattan’s East Side.

• On Oct. 12, 1945, PFC Desmond T. Doss of Lynchburg, Va., is presented the Congressional Medal of Honor for outstanding bravery, the first conscientious objector to receive the award. Doss, an Army medic, put his life in peril during the battle for Okinawa, saving dozens of lives.

• On Oct. 11, 1950, the Federal Communications Commission issues CBS the first license to broadcast color television.

However, RCA contested the license and a restraining order was issued. Despite this setback, CBS did broadcast the first color TV program in June 1951.

• On Oct. 8, 1998, the U.S. House of Representatives votes to impeach President Bill Clinton on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. He was acquitted after a five-week trial.

ROCKNROLLA “RocknRolla” is writer/director Guy Ritchie’s latest Cockney Caper flick, in the same vein as “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and “Snatch.”

Like the other two films, you can expect loads of stylized violence, a maze of plots and counterplots, interweaving story lines, double-crosses and shady characters spouting darkly comic dialogue.

It’s a formula that’s served Ritchie well, so it’s great to see him back in good form, considering “Swept Away” and “Revolver” weren’t so great.

“RocknRolla” stars Gerard Butler as One Two, a two-bit con who wants to make a big score in London’s realestate game. So, he gets a loan from

a shady character named Lenny (Tom Wilkinson), who plans to doublecross One Two so that he not only gets the property for himself, he can still muscle One Two for the loan repayment (at an exorbitant interest rate, of course).

Throw into the mix a couple of American rock promoters (Jeremy Piven and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges) hunting for a stolen painting; a wasted punk rocker (Toby Kebbell), who’s the stepson of Lenny; a Russian mobster; and a few other colorful characters who all seem to have some connection to everyone else, and things start to get really interesting.

The action sequences are sweet. Not only are they shot and edited well, they’re also pretty darned creative: Golf clubs vs. machine guns anyone?

Yes. And it’s freaking cool to behold.

“RocknRolla” isn’t “Citizen Kane,” but it’s a wonderful, entertaining Guilty Pleasure for anyone who loves a great caper movie.

• Composting occurs in nature and is a process that keeps organic nutrients cycling from soil to plants and back to the soil. You can use organic waste from

• Successful composting depends on the proper mix of “green” material and “brown” material. Green provides nitrogen, Brown provides carbon. With proper air circulation and moisture in your compost bin, a mix of two parts green to one part brown should decompose fairly quickly.

• There’s a ready supply of both green and brown materials in the average household. Kitchen scraps such as orange and banana peels, for instance, would be considered “green,” while fallen leaves would be “brown.” So you can use the leaves you rake in autumn for compost, as well as for mulch.

FERTILIZE YOUR GARDEN WITH ORGANIC COMPOST • Using organic fertilizers that are created from plant compose and manures, you will recover and recycle nutrients important for plant growth. Their slow release maintains healthy balanced growth and improves life-supporting soil over the whole season.

• Chemical fertilizers round out the “big 3” of environmental pollutants in landscaping. Fortunately, it’s very simple for homeowners to switch to a natural approach when it comes to providing the landscape with nutrients. For instance, did you know that you can be mowing your lawn and fertilizing your lawn simultaneously? Well, you can, at least if you use mulching mowers.

With mulching mowers, you can let the grass clippings fall where they may, acting as an organic fertilizer.

USE ORGANIC MULCHES IN YOUR GARDEN • Reduce yard waste by recycling yard trimmings into free fertilizer and mulch.

• Compost also helps with aeration in soil, as well as helping soil retain water better -- so that you won’t have to water as much.
