career styler 2024 / WHY ENTER COMPETITIONS?

Why Enter competitions?

@ashleigh_hodges_hair

Competitions are a brilliant way to build confidence and see how good you really are! They’re also the perfect place for you to get creative and showcase your ideas.

@emmadixonhair

C

ASHLEIGH HODGES Colourtastic Genius, Colour Genius Awards 2020, IT Girl and FAME Team and Finalist of British Hairdressing of the Year.

ompetitions aren’t just about winning, think of them as your own creative playground where you can test and improve your skills. Receiving feedback from some of the biggest names in the industry - that’s invaluable for your growth. They’re also about getting noticed, meeting new people and making connections that could open up amazing opportunities for your career.

“Competitions are great for so many reasons! They help hairdressers to learn quickly, build their confidence and break out of the mould they’re currently working in, plus the entries get seen by the top names in the industry. As a judge, I love seeing people enter again and again as I start to feel like I can see their creative journey grow and evolve into the hairdresser they were always meant to be.”

At Concept Hair, we have two incredible opportunities where you can get creative: Concept Hair Learner of the Year and The School Spotlight Award. Concept Hair’s Learner of the Year is the leading competition for hairdressing learners, showcasing the incredible creativity and technical ability of college students and apprentices across the UK. The 2024 Learner of the Year competition received over 2,200 entries! The School Spotlight Award, celebrating its third year, provides secondary school-aged learners with an exciting opportunity to showcase their talents in a photographic competition.

EMMA DIXON Winner, Denman Global Stage Star 2023 "Having struggled with self-belief and imposter syndrome over the years, I've found that taking part in competitions has improved my outlook, both professionally and personally. They have raised my profile in the industry, which has been a real boost to my confidence. Practising and planning for competitions, both as a competitor and as a judge, has helped me channel my creative flow in ways I've never done before. This has provided me with more inspiration and ideas that help me both in competitions and in the salon."

Winner, L’Oréal Colour Trophy Award ‘Moving Image’ category 2023

Winner, Wahl Barber of the Year 2021 and Pro-Barber World Series Barber of the Year 2022

“What better way for people to get to know you than through competitions? Repeating ‘I’ll never make it’ serves no purpose. If you don’t try, you’ll never know. The best piece of advice I could give to someone thinking of entering a competition is ‘be yourself’. I spent years trying to fit in, almost mentally burning out. Three years ago, I decided to prioritise my own happiness and be true to myself. I’ve just won my first ever L’Oréal Colour Trophy, and my journey has just begun.”

ISABEL COLE Winner, Concept Hair Learner of the Year, ‘Level 2 Styling’ category in 2022 and ‘AvantGarde’ category in 2023

“Winning competitions felt like an affirmation to myself for the sacrifices and hard work I've put in over the years. Not only do these victories open doors, but they also place you on a platform that enables a wealth of networking opportunities. Winning my titles and the subsequent wave of career highlights that followed will be among my proudest moments within my career.”

“Entering the Concept Hair Learner of the Year was my first experience with competitions. Winning the ‘Level 2 Styling’ category massively boosted my confidence, inspiring me to enter more competitions. During my Level 3 course, I competed in Hair Up, Colouring, and AvantGarde categories - and won in Avant-Garde! This journey has led me to the World Skills regionals and even to showcasing my skills on stage at Salon International! Your dreams can come true if you put the time and effort in!”

Barber

Multi-award winning barber and ‘Master of the Fade’ Rhys Whitehouse, is an integral member of the Wahl Artistic Team and Senior Barber at Hinces. Concept Hair: Tell us a little about your job. Rhys Whitehouse: My primary job is to accurately consult and style my clientsʼ hair to suit their lifestyles and requirements, with knowledge of suitable cutting techniques, correct tool selection and styling product knowledge. CH: What initially drew you towards a career in barbering? RW: After leaving a previously creative career, I didn't feel like I’d enjoy a job where I couldn't be creative or challenged. I initially trained as a hairdresser but made the choice to drift towards barbering mainly due to the influence of Instagram. CH: What aspects of your job do you love the most? RW: I enjoy pressure immensely, the pressure of a new client sitting in your chair who has been recommended to you is a challenge, living up to these expectations is something I enjoy. I also love seeing a project through, having a concept in mind and acting on it. Planning a photoshoot, mood boarding, booking the photographer, stylist etc., and then watching it come together as if you were conducting an orchestra.

“The chair will always come first. Chasing magazine features or other self-promoting opportunities must be a second priority” 12

S p o n s o r A D V E R T O R I A L / 2024 career styler

@r.whitehouse_cuts

CH: What personality traits and skills make a great barber?

CH: What can a successful barber expect to earn?

RW: Work ethic is most important; you're not going to be busy immediately so how you use this time is key. There are two types of barbers when building a clientele; the barber who goes home early because they're quiet or the barber that stays later because they've been quiet.

RW: That is entirely dependent on your employment status but I'd say under a chair rental contract depending on commission I'd say anywhere between £30k-£40k before tax deductions and expenses per annum. Business and salon owners can earn north of £100k per annum.

Punctuality is another; be ready for your

client and ensure your workspace is clean, your tools are sharp and the floor is swept.

Communication is also key, knowing your clients and communicating with them enables clients to see you as a person rather than a service provider. This will create loyalty and customer retention in the long run. CH: What are the biggest challenges you face in your profession and how do you overcome them? RW: Managing a sustainable work life

balance is the hardest challenge. A

busy column will always mean that you are answering messages out of hours. I'm a believer in harmony between work and home life rather than a strict trade off. CH: What have been your career highlights to date?

r o f e ey ail t e d

RW: Winning my first title of "Wahl British Barber of the Year 2021", then going on to represent Wahl in their Artistic Team is a feeling I’ll never forget. Other highlights include featuring on the cover of Modern Barber magazine or inviting my parents to the Modern Barber awards where I was nominated for "Best All Round Barber". CH: What five skills, or personality traits, does someone need to excel as a barber? RW: Self-discipline, time management, an eye for detail, being approachable, confidence.

@frazerhair @thehausstudio

A Guest Artist to L'Oréal Professionnel Paris, Frazer Wallace is one of the most in demand colour specialists in the Industry. His expert techniques and vision have earned him prestigious hairdressing nominations and a reputation for excellence. Concept Hair: What does a typical day look like for you? Frazer Wallace: On any given day, I’m either travelling across the UK to teach or I’m in the salon, ensuring my clients are looked after. It’s a mix of sharing my knowledge and applying it directly to hair, which keeps every day exciting and varied. CH: What attracted you most to specialise in hair colouring? FW: The thing about being a colour specialist is the opportunities it presents. It has opened many doors for me. Colour skills are in demand and it’s lucrative. For me, it’s being able to enhance and complete a client’s look with a personalised touch of colour - that’s where I get to be creative. Colour is where I am an artist; haircutting is where I am a craftsman.

CH: What’s your favourite part of the job? FW: I genuinely love all areas of hairdressing, colour, cutting and styling. It's the interaction with my clients and seeing their satisfaction that I find most fulfilling. CH: What challenges do you face, and how do you handle them? FW: Every day, the main challenge I face is expectations. Everyone wants immediate results. Holding my colour specialist degree has helped me to manage expectations and achieve realistic goals in a way that’s best for my client’s hair. CH: How do you keep up with the latest colour trends and techniques? FW: I look at trends as something to be broken down and reinterpreted. I never replicate; only enhance or spin it my way. CH: What have been your career highlights so far? FW: Being nominated for Scottish Hairdresser of the Year was a huge honour. I was also ‘The Visionary’ finalist at the IT List Awards. And most recently, headlining the L'Oréal Professionnel Paris Colour Congress with Darren and Jackie Ambrose which was an incredible experience. CH: What might a successful colour specialist earn? FW: As a colour specialist, the potential earnings are limitless. It can vary, especially if you are splitting your time between working in the salon and teaching. Ultimately, if you get as much training as possible and you know your worth, you can charge a premium rate for your services. It’s about building up to that level, not starting there.

CH: What has been a career highlight for you so far?

CH: What's next for you? YH: I’m currently working on a project called ‘Talking Textures’ exploring hair within the SWANA community, which I’m really excited to launch. The opportunities in this industry are endless! CH: What advice would you give to those who are thinking of entering competitions? YH: Do it! Even if you’re nervous or think it’s not for you. Competitions are a great way to connect with a whole community of people who are just as excited to see you showcase your skills as you are.

Yasemin Hassan: 100%! It’s given me publicity, recognition, and clients love that their stylist has won awards. I’ve also had the chance to network with other stylists and assist in session work, which has been invaluable.

YH: I wanted to challenge myself and showcase what I love doing. Joe Mills, my mentor, always encouraged me and gave me the right tools and understanding I needed.

YH: A lot of my influences come from subcultures, my life in London, and trips to Berlin. I like longer lengths, textures and more grungier styles, as well as adding or enhancing textures in hair.

YH: Winning the Modern Barber award recently was a major highlight.

World class

Competitions have opened many doors for me, like the chance to present on stage at Salon International! CH: Creating an original look is essential in competitions. What influenced your particular style?

@Hair.by.mollyr

MR: I chose an Avant-Garde style that I learnt at college, which stands out as it’s so different. It’s also adaptable, so I’ve used it for other competitions, and created distinct looks each time.

Molly Rayner, a rising hairdressing talent and 2022 Concept Hair Level 3 Hair Up winner, talks about how competitions boost confidence and potential.

CH: What's next for you? MR: I’m passionate about helping the next generation of hairdressers be the best they can be. My college, West Suffolk College, has given me an opportunity to work towards my assessor’s qualification, which will be my first steps to becoming a teacher. I will also be attending workshops and demos, since I’m now a member of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing's ClubStar Art Team.

Concept Hair: What inspired you to enter competitions? Molly Rayner: I was told about competitions at college, so I entered the Concept Hair competition but never expected anything from it. I’ve always struggled with self-criticism, but the incredible support from my peers and tutors really helped. I was nervous at first when I arrived at the competition venue, but once I got to the floor I was able to focus. The positive experience inspired me to take every opportunity for growth, including competing nationally at World Skills UK where I was awarded 'highly commended'.

CH: What advice would you give to someone thinking of entering competitions?

“I’m passionate about helping the next generation of hairdressers”

MR: Take that leap of faith! Once you’ve entered, remember everyone will be in the same boat and feeling nervous too, so try to relax and have fun!

Meet Marlon Hawkins, L'Oréal Professionnel Paris Guest Artist and artistic director at Brooks and Brooks, with experience in commercial and creative hairdressing. Concept Hair: Can you describe a typical day as an educator? Marlon Hawkins: My day starts with a cup of tea (yes, I’m team tea!), followed by getting myself looking presentable, prepping my PowerPoint references and my kit. I normally arrive an hour early at the venue to set up and prepare my demonstration model. Preparation is key! Days vary from full look-and-learn sessions to hands-on masterclasses. CH: What is the most rewarding part of your role? MH: The most rewarding aspect is seeing students gain confidence and successfully apply the techniques in their salon work. It’s even more exciting when they’ve added their own unique twist, leading to beautiful creative results that can be used for auditions or photographic projects.

building a clientele, and pushing myself to take up different opportunities, including the L’Oréal Professional ID Artist Programme. Now, eight years on, I teach globally with Brooks & Brooks and L'Oreal Professionnel Paris. This industry is constantly changing and I love being able to deliver education that is relevant, clear, usable - it’s this part of my role as artistic director that I love. CH: What have been your career highlights as an educator to date? MH: The opportunity to travel with my work has been my biggest highlight. From LA to Japan, I’ve had incredible experiences, met different people, worked on different hair types, and learnt new techniques; I’ve definitely had a few pinch me moments!

Freelance hairdresser

Being a freelance hairdresser means Sian Roscoe runs her own client column in a co-creative workspace, but also gets to travel, work on TV and movie sets and at Fashion Week. Concept Hair: Tell us about your job. Sian Roscoe: My job includes running a busy column, assisting fashion shows, films and working with amazing brands like Indola. CH: How did you work towards being a freelance hairdresser? SR: When I decided to become a freelancer, I made sure I spoke to other freelancers for advice and asked what they wish they’d done differently before they made the change. The freelance community is hugely supportive as everyone understands how scary it can be to make that jump, but when you do, you’ll find a huge support network ready to help. CH: How did you build a clientele? SR: I built my clientele through social media and good old-fashioned recommendations. As a freelancer, you’ll find your relationships with clients are on a much deeper level. They come to you, not only because of the work you do, but because they support and respect you. I don’t see my clients as ‘clients’ anymore, they’re friends. They champion my work and believe in my business so will recommend me to all their friends and colleagues.

CH: What do you love most about being a freelance hairdresser? SR: I love the freedom you get. Not in terms of taking whatever days off I want (that is a bonus), but that I can take on external work that I wouldn’t have been able to do as an employed stylist, such as events, shoots and filming. CH: What personality traits and skills do you need to become a successful freelance hairdresser? SR: I think you have to be extremely resilient and driven with your goals. You don’t have a boss or colleagues to tell you to keep going, you have to be your own cheerleader. It can be tiring but when you see how far you can go on your own merit, it’s something to be super proud of and gives you the drive to power on. CH: What have been your career highlights so far? SR: My career highlights have been working on

Netflix show The Diplomat and ITV’s Trigger

Point. Being a member of the Fellowship’s Project Colour, Project X and finalising for the F.A.M.E team. Working at New York & London Fashion Week and finalising two years in a row for Solo Artist of the year at the Salon Business Awards.

CH: What three tips would you give to someone aspiring to become a freelance hairdresser? SR:

1

Invest in yourself! Go on those courses, learn new skills and be open to education. The more you have in your arsenal, the more you have to offer your clients.

2

Network. Go to industry events and meet other freelancers, there’s a huge community out there waiting to welcome you with open arms. You’re not alone. And say YES to every opportunity that comes your way.

be ed r 3 i p ins “There’s a huge community out there waiting to welcome you with open arms”

Be your most authentic self, unapologetically! People will gravitate to you if you are 100% your true self. Your vibe will attract your tribe. YOU are your brand! So don’t try and copy anyone else, get inspired by others and how they got to where they are, but do it your way. Sharon Malcolm is a multi-awarding-winning hairdresser, and she has been a successful salon owner for over twenty-three years. CH: What’s it like being a salon owner? Sharon Malcolm: It’s incredibly rewarding but full of challenges, like keeping up with any changes to legislation and any new things going on in the industry. But my main focus is my team. I have an amazing team and helping them develop their skills and confidence is the best part of my job. CH: What does owning your own salon involve?

“I have an amazing team and helping them develop their skills and confidence is the best part of my job”

SM: No two days are the same. It’s a mix of meetings with my product partners, such as Denman and Schwarzkopf Professional, where we discuss new products and trends. I also manage my own column, maintaining a loyal client base - many have been with me since day one. Balancing finances, getting creative on photo shoots, and being an educator are all key parts of my role.

CH: When did you decide you wanted to own a salon?

CH: What are the biggest challenges as a salon owner?

SM: I’ve always dreamed of having my own salon. I love making people look and feel great and giving others the opportunity to grow. After I completed my training, I returned to my hometown of Newtownards, opened my salon and it’s been going for 23 years!

SM: Recently it’s been bouncing back from Covid. Staying updated with taxes, employment law and business legislation is key. It’s great to have a network of other salon owners to share tips and information.

Building Brand you

@jamieayshfordstyling

After quitting university, Jamie Ayshford now studies at RJL Education, alongside salon, The Scissor Psychologist. He shares his hairdressing journey, passionately believing you are your brand, and highlighting the importance of authenticity. Concept Hair: Why did you decide to change career paths? Jamie Ayshford: In 2018, I was studying at university, constantly in a panic about the need to work harder to earn a ‘proper career’. I was anxiety-ridden, stressed and a closeted gay man. What I really wanted was style, creativity and to be able to express myself. Jump forward to 2024, and I’m doing exactly that. I never knew an industry would be so encouraging. I can wear flared jeans, makeup, rock my babylights and own my sexuality. CH: What inspired you to start creating content about your hairdressing education? JA: My social content goes beyond just silky blow-drys and salon pranks. It carries a deeper message: that vocational pathways are just as valid as traditional university routes. I want people to realise that education, when

right for you, doesn’t bring anxiety or exam stress; it brings excitement and peace. The messages, replies and comments I’ve had to being vulnerable with my journey has been overwhelming. The hair industry, you’re remarkable and I love you. CH: How does crafting your video content contribute to shaping your personal brand? JA: Hairdressing is not just about the technical skills, it’s about creating a brand and client journey where they feel like you’re their best mate, they can trust you and you can have a blinking fun time at the station together. Through social media, I can genuinely showcase the authentic me. Styling choices, workplace insights, music, preferred opinions and individual approaches are all blended into a little grid which is a thriving ‘you’ portfolio. That’s vital in hair where you and your brand are one and the same.

CH: For learners who might feel nervous about creating content, what advice would you offer? JA: Be cringe! For real, why are you holding back from sharing who you are? In fear of people judging you? Do you feel embarrassed? “Gosh, he loves himself”. Embracing yourself is hard, but what’s harder is looking back and realising that your hair journey was limited by self-created constraints based on thoughts about what others, who genuinely aren’t interested, are thinking. Be unapologetic in your content and do it scared, because in a few years you could be doing stuff you only dreamed about. Get up, embrace hating the sound of your voice, show the world when you drop your comb, get your hands covered in dye and your brushes tangle – it’s real life! CH: Why do you feel creating reels and short video clips is essential?

JA: Hair success is based on engagement, on establishing a column and networking; and the cheapest and easiest way to do that is through socials. It’s startling that a 10-second snapshot of my training can be showcased to 800k people for free. I’ve had people from different countries message me that they would love to be in my chair one day. Socials are the ultimate showcase tool.

Start! Your first isn’t about finesse, just how your first foils weren’t either. You’re not going to get that reach unless you dirty the paper. Be consistent. I have a reminder on my phone to post daily. I have a phone notes section for any ideas that come to mind, too. Use trending audios, but more importantly, match your energy to that audio. Don’t hold back. Get your fellow stylists involved. I’ve had my funniest of times creating reels. It’s 2024, if your salon doesn’t have a ringlight and tripod, put it on the ‘to buy’ board. Don’t post static images in video format. Get that camera in portrait and tap the big red button.

H

1

@pinkflamingohairr

BE A CONTENT POWERHOUSE.

ere are Jude’s incredible top ten tips for building a dedicated clientbase.

Content is king on social media,

so film everything you do in the salon; from simple blowdrys to root tints. The more you post, the more likely your work will appear in your followers’ feed.

CREATE A SEPARATE ACCOUNT. While it’s fun to share snippets of your personal life, potential clients are mostly interested in seeing your hairdressing skills, not your Turkish holiday snaps!

4

2

WORK HARD. Opportunities rarely land in your lap! Dedication and grit are indispensable, so be disciplined. When starting as an apprentice, you won’t really get the chance to work with clients, as your salon will be busy and you’ll need to help assist. So, use any free time to practise and improve your skills.

3

TAG BRANDS. This was a game changer for me! When you use a particular product, make sure you tag the brand, and use relevant hashtags associated with the product. I started doing this and ended up getting brand collaborations, as well as gaining more traction on social media.

44

“The more you post, the more likely your work will appear in your followers’ feed”

5

growing your clientbase / 2024 career styler

8

PROMOTE YOURSELF. Your salon may offer your services at a discounted rate for your models or clients, use this to your advantage to draw new people in. Showcase what you do on social media. Another great way to build your clientbase and gain experience, is by joining student groups on Facebook; post photos of your work and mention you’re training and can offer discounts.

LEARN THE ALGORITHM. Instagram is notorious for hiding your posts from people’s feeds, so find out when your followers are active by putting out a poll. For me, I get the best interaction around 8pm. Also, make sure you’re engaging with comments and responding to messages, as engagement rates can affect post visibility.

6

SHOW YOUR FACE. Trust is built on genuine connections. By creating a short video of you at work, or of you introducing yourself, you’re much more likely to build trust with a potential client. I’ve had clients say that they’ve watched my ‘day in the life’ videos and have felt comfortable to come and see me.

7 10

DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF WITH OTHERS. We are all guilty of this! Especially with all the amazing things we see people get up to on social media, but it’s the worst thing you can do for yourself. Everyone is on their own path and at different stages in their journey.

TRUST THE PROCESS. Building your brand and clientbase doesn’t happen overnight! It’s taken me two years to get where I am today, and I’m still working hard to progress further. You’re on your own journey, so enjoy the process.

45

9

CREATE YOUR BRAND. Even within a salon, you can start to create your own signature touch. For me, I am all about vivid colours and creative cutting, so that’s what I post on social media. From seeing my posts, clients have come to me as they want me to create something similar for them.

Session stylist

Syd Hayes ranks among fashion’s most exciting talents, creating looks inspired by London's youth-driven culture, and is Brand Ambassador to BaByliss PRO.

@babylissprouk

Concept Hair: What’s a typical day for you? Syd Hayes: Everyday is a new, thrilling adventure for me! My work is wonderfully varied: one moment I’m in the salon, the next at brand meetings, or prepping wigs and hairpieces in the studio. You might even find me on set, styling celebrities like Kate Moss, David Beckham, Bella Hadid or Kendall Jenner.

Collaboration is at the heart of my role,

whether it’s creating unique hairstyles with global brands or diving into editorial shoots for magazines like Vogue - that’s where the real magic in hairstyling shines. As BaByliss Brand Ambassador, I work closely with the team on photoshoots and exciting product developments. I also take immense pride in overseeing our family salon in Kew Gardens. For me, work is a blend of creativity, variety and passion; it’s fun and fulfilling, and I’m lucky to love what I do!

S p o n s o r A D V E R T O R I A L / 2024 career styler

CH: What attracted you to session styling? SH: Since school, I’ve always been obsessed with art - think Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein and Henry Moore. My journey started at 17, training at Nicky Clarke’s. I remember flicking through French Vogue and Italian Vogue, being mesmerised by Guido’s hair masterpieces, as he worked alongside the best photographers in the world. That sparked my path into this exciting world! CH: What’s the best part of your job? SH: Creativity! Hair is like a canvas - you can shape, colour, and texture it in endless ways. I live for those moments of artistic freedom, especially during editorial work. Collaborating with other creative minds stylists, fashion designers, makeup artists, and photographers. That’s the most exciting part of the job. CH: Any big challenges? SH: Life’s full of them, and that’s what makes you a better individual. A big challenge is making wigs or hairpieces look authentic - it can either make or break the finished look, which puts huge pressure on the stylist! CH: How do you stay on top of trends?

SH: Trends are a mix of global influences from street styles to art, textures and fabrics. I’m lucky enough to work with incredibly creative people which means we are constantly inspiring one another and sharing ideas. CH: What have been your career highlights so far? SH: My journey with BaByliss has been phenomenal, and winning awards is the cherry on top. Plus, working with exclusive models and celebrities is always a thrill. But, for me, seeing my former assistants achieve success, that’s the biggest highlight. My team is my family.

CH: What kind of support has been most beneficial?

THE MENTEE: LIV ROGERS, APPRENTICE AT HX HAIR

LR: Having a mentor who is approachable is hugely beneficial. Heffy encourages me to experiment with new techniques, which has widened my skill set and boosted my confidence. We have regular one-to-one sessions to discuss my progress, and also team training sessions where we rotate the role of host each week, so we learn from each other. THE MENTOR:

HEFFY WHEELER,

STYLIST AND OWNER, HX HAIR

Concept Hair: What mentoring style do you think is most beneficial?

CH: How do your mentees keep up with current trends and techniques?

Heffy Wheeler: Mentoring is about taking it at the pace that’s right for your mentee. Being compassionate and supportive, but also showing positivity and passion for what you’re doing. Giving them hands-on experience is best. It opens up more questions too.

HW: I encourage Liv to attend industry events and immerse herself in the industry. It’s about putting yourself out there by entering awards like Concept Hair Learner of the Year, learning new skills and being inspired. I always encourage my team to get involved by assisting people on stage or assisting people who are doing shoots.

CH: How does mentoring help with personal and professional growth? HW: Having an open and honest relationship means I am here to support Liv’s growth, both personally and professionally. Liv started with little confidence, but now manages her own clientele. Watching her transformation has been brilliant.

“It’s about continuously learning and putting yourself out there”

CH: What’s your approach to providing feedback? HW: I make sure we have regular check-ins, working together to address any issues with a clear path of resolution, always reinforcing the positive. It’s about being constructive and putting feelings aside to ensure both parties leave knowing the issue has been resolved. CH: How do you feel seeing your mentees progress and succeed? HW: I get an overwhelming sense of pride and responsibility! Being part of their journey and helping them build a solid foundation so they have a successful career is why I mentor. Working with young people reminds me to be the positive influence that young people need.
