HOW ENTERING COMPETITIONS CAN HELP YOU
Hiya, I’m Daisy Turner. I work for Toucan Heating and Plumbing Ltd, and I’m the first contestant to do the doublewinning both the HIP Learner of the Year and HIP Female Skills competitions in 2024.
“COMPETITIONS OPEN DOORSSO WHY NOT WALK THROUGH?”
urrently in my final year as a Level 3 gas apprentice at Barking and Dagenham College, I've received incredible support throughout my competition journeyespecially from my tutors, with a special mention to Lee Reegan. I could never repay them for that.
3 ‘BEAT THE NERVE’ TIPS
WHY YOU SHOULD ENTER
Since winning the double, I’ve had some incredible opportunities. One of my prizes was a Viessmann training day, where I learned about their boilers and heat pumps. I was also invited to the InstallerSHOW at Birmingham NEC to spend the day on the Plumb Center stand. I’ve met people from all over the worldGrundfos reps from Denmark, CIPHE researchers from the USA, Grohe reps from France, Germany and the USA. Grohe, who sponsor the HIP competitions, also sponsored my trip to the WorldSkills competition in Lyon, France. I was invited to WaterSafe’s lead-free solder campaign launch, which was really interesting, and I’ve taken part in magazine features and research meetings. That’s even led to an invite to the House of Lords at the end of March! Plus, I’ve been invited by Grundfos on a VIP trip to Denmark, where I’ll get to meet other installers and visit the Grundfos museums.
I always say, if you’re considering entering, then you’re obviously meant to be there. It’s an invaluable experience where you get the chance to shine in your own waycompletely different from college or work.

SOLAR THERMAL SYSTEMS: AN INTRODUCTION
Whether used in homes, commercial buildings, or industrial applications, solar thermal is an important skill for future heating engineers.
HOW DO THESE SYSTEMS WORK, AND WHAT DO PLUMBERS NEED TO KNOW?
HOW SOLAR THERMAL SYSTEMS WORK
A solar thermal system collects energy from sunlight and transfers the energy to the water as heat for use in a property’s hot water or heating system. It can even work on cloudy days. The process works in three key steps:
1
“A SOLAR THERMAL SYSTEM COLLECTS ENERGY FROM SUNLIGHT AND TRANSFERS THE ENERGY TO THE WATER AS HEAT”
Solar collectors (panels) absorb sunlight –converting solar energy into heat.
2 A heat transfer fluid (or water) moves the heat –circulating through a system of pipes.
3
The heat is transferred to a water storage tank, where it can be used for hot water or heating.
Unlike solar PV panels, which generate electricity, solar thermal panels are specifically designed to heat water.
“A SOLAR THERMAL SYSTEM COULD SAVE YOUR CUSTOMER APPROX 50% OFF THEIR HOT WATER BILL!”
TYPES OF SOLAR THERMAL PANELS
There are two main types of solar thermal collectors:
FLAT PLATE COLLECTORS
A simple, durable, and costeffective option. These have a flat, glazed surface that absorbs solar energy and transfers it to a fluid inside.
EVACUATED TUBE COLLECTORS
More efficient in colder climates. These use glass vacuum tubes to trap heat, reducing heat loss and improving performance.
Both types have their place in domestic and commercial installations, with evacuated tubes often preferred for high-efficiency systems.
KEY CONSIDERATIONS
As a trainee plumber, you might not have installed a solar thermal system yet - but understanding the fundamentals will be useful as demand for renewable energy grows. Here are some key things to know:
POSITIONING & INSTALLATION
Solar collectors might be installed on a roof, wall or floor mounted frame, they need to be at an optimal angle for maximum sunlight. This might mean working at height and following safety regulations.
INTEGRATION WITH EXISTING SYSTEMS
Solar thermal works alongside traditional heating (like boilers), pre-heating water before it enters the system.
MAINTENANCE & SERVICING
Unlike gas boilers, solar thermal systems have few moving parts, but they still require annual servicing to check for leaks, fluid levels, and system efficiency.
THE FUTURE OF SOLAR HEATING
With gas boilers being phased out and government incentives encouraging renewable energy, the demand for solar thermal is set to grow. For plumbers and heating engineers, understanding how these systems work will be a valuable skill in the future of heating.
“UNDERSTANDING HOW THESE SYSTEMS WORK WILL BE A VALUABLE SKILL IN THE FUTURE OF HEATING”

RSWB INSTALLATION STEP-BY-STEP
Walraven’s RSWB (Rapid Sliding Wall Bracket) is a simple way to fix pipes between joists - no need for wooden noggins. Just adjust, screw in, and get the job done fast.
FOLLOW THESE FIVE SIMPLE STEPS TO INSTALL IT:
STEP 1
The RSWB comes as two connected halves. To separate them, gently bend the bracket until they snap apart.
TIME SAVER
These handy brackets are growing in popularity with plumbers and heating engineers. The RSWB is an adjustable metal bracket that fits securely between joists, making first-fixing faster and easier. It comes in two sizes: 25-40cm for smaller joists and 4060cm for larger ones.
People in the trade call the Walraven RSWB a “time saver in every way”, “brilliantly made
Slide the two halves together to form the full bracket.
“FASTER FIRST-FIXING WITH THE WALRAVEN RSWB”
STEP 3
Bend the fixing tabs at both ends and adjust the bracket to the required length.
STEP 5
Use the pre-drilled holes along the bracket to screw in your pipe clips quickly and accurately - ensuring perfect alignment on longer pipe runs.

5 STAY ACTIVE & ON THE MOVE
PROTECT YOUR TOOLS: 5 TOP TIPS
“IF YOU’RE ON-SITE, DON’T LEAVE TOOLS LYING AROUND WHERE THEY CAN BE EASILY TAKEN”
Tools are easy to lose or steal if you're not careful. Whether you're working on-site or visiting a customer’s house, taking a few simple precautions can save you time, money, and hassle.
HERE ARE FIVE ESSENTIAL TIPS TO KEEP YOUR TOOLS SAFE
1 MARK YOUR TOOLS
Engrave your initials, use a UV pen, or add brightly coloured tape to make your tools easily identifiable. It helps deter thieves and makes lost tools easier to find.
2 KEEP A TOOL INVENTORY
Take a quick photo of your tools before heading to a job. It’s easy to misplace a pair of grips or a screwdriver - having a record helps you check everything is accounted for.
3 LOCK UP YOUR VAN & STAY VIGILANT
If you have a van, always lock it - even if you’re only stepping away for a moment. If you’re on-site, don’t leave tools lying around where they can be easily taken.
4 USE A LOCKABLE TOOLBOX
A heavy, lockable toolbox adds an extra layer of security. Opportunistic thieves are more likely to grab loose tools than attempt to break into a locked box.
5 DO A FINAL CHECK BEFORE LEAVING A JOB
Before you leave, do a quick scan:
■ Have you picked up all your tools?
■ Anything left under floorboards or behind pipework?
■ Any small tools left in a customer’s house?
These five habits can save a lot of hassle - and a lot of money!
