Mayor’s Message - Mayor Barbara Bender

Happy Centennial Year! I hope the 2023 year has started out well for you.

The City Council met for our annual retreat on March 4 and had a very productive day hearing from each of the city department directors and discussing future development opportunities in the city.

The city will be embarking on an update to the 2040 Comprehensive Plan this year. This is where we really need your help. Are you happy with the current vision for the city? Do you have ideas of what should be developed, redeveloped or not developed? This plan is what the City Council and Planning staff depend on when deciding on future rezoning applications and talking with developers. We need your input now rather than after votes. There will be opportunities for responding to surveys and other public meetings later in the year and we would love to have a large group of citizens participate so we can develop a good working plan.

The roadwork around The Grove development that was to be completed by Dec. 31 is still ongoing. The very wet winter has created rain delays in completing the work, which is now scheduled to be completed in March. Please continue to slow down and take care when driving in the area as construction is

progressing in all areas.

Changes are coming to our curbside recycling program. The city is following the changes implemented in Grayson and Loganville to change from the free, 18-gallon bin curbside recycling program to provide 65-gallon recycling carts with an annual convenience fee. The Snellville Recycling Center is available to all for most any recyclables for those who chose to recycle without the fee. The change is being made to avoid another costly increase to the sanitation costs this year. See the details in the article on Page 11.

Please be sure to mark your calendars for all the great events coming up this year. I hope to see you soon!
