CAREER SIGNING DAY: South Gwinnett High hosted a Career Academy Signing day for 9th-grade students. South Gwinnett’s Career Academies offer students opportunities to explore many career pathways. There are currently 13 career pathways offered to students, along with the opportunity to complete dual enrollment. On Jan. 27 SGHS’ 9th grade students committed to a pathway and a career pathway. This opportunity will allow students to pursue their interest in efforts to develop a dynamic workforce not only for today but for the future as well.

FOOTBALL SIGNING DAY: South Gwinnett High School’s Annual Signing Day Ceremony took place Feb. 3. Six of South Gwinnett’s football players signed their National Letter of Intent to attend a university. For many sports, especially in Division I, National Signing Day has become a celebrated event. This is one of the most exciting moments for a studentathlete is receiving a verbal scholarship offer. Football players who signed were: Tymere Burton, UNC Charlotte, linebacker; Pierre Ford, Tennessee State University, wide receiver/ defensive back; Darius Owens, Akron University, defensive back; Jay Miller, Bethany College, linebacker; Ike Eneude, Johnson C. Smith University, defensive back; and Caleb Collins, Fullerton College, linebacker/defensive end.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION: South Gwinnett High School and the Snellville Youth Commission celebrated Black History Month with a community expo featuring exclusive interviews with relatives of Emmett Till who was lynched by a white mob. The Rev. Wheeler Parker Jr., South Gwinnett High School’s Principal Dorothy Jarrett and Former Gwinnett County Public School student Marc Collins who portrays Parker in the movie ‘Till.’ The featured event was moderated by SGHS and SYC leaders – Narjise Koko and Winta Mamo. Mayor Barbara Bender along with several council members were present to enjoy South Gwinnett High School’s elite Fine Arts Department that included the orchestra, student artists, and staff and student vendors. It was a day to remember because history was in the building.
