Remembering Noralea Dalkin, 1944 - 2018 Noralea Dalkin TRAVELER GRANDMA GARDENER DOG LOVER

#reallifeyogi When I inherited Noralea’s former job at Sun & Moon of editing the newsletter, setting the annual workshop schedule, and building the quarterly class schedule of 55-odd teachers, she had two words for me: Good luck. But as she happily transitioned into the semi-retirement of teaching yoga and enjoying her many favorite life’s pleasures, her support for me and Amir was unflagging. We always had our studio-mom for any necessary counsel, including adaptations for a

We spent many times in the back office laughing and shaking our heads at some of the stuff that goes on in a yoga studio :) We didn’t always see eye-to-eye, but we always always loved each other. Her hug and smile and sparkle in her eye when she saw me … precious. She gave her heart and soul to yoga and this community. We will always hold her tenderly in our hearts. ~ RIXIE DENNISON, TEACHER In the 15 years since I met Noralea, she blossomed as a teacher and leader who engaged in and advocated yoga at whatever level that bore fruit for herself and others, with a faithfulness led by her heart. There are people who continually bless the earth with their sweetness. Noralea was such a person

student with MS, recommendations for how to accommodate large crowds for big workshops, and the occasional motherly reminder to Amir to tuck in his shirt. Anytime I’m in the large room in Fairfax, I regard the spot by the forward door as the place for Noralea’s mat for master teacher workshops (even though Vicki has long since claimed this spot!) as she was always at the ready for any necessity.

In January as Noralea traveled with a tour group to South Africa, her last email to me was when she landed, jet-lagged. She shared the humorous account of the hassle of being diverted to Nigeria because, “some not too smart person put a diaper in the airplane toilet.” After a week of adventuring, Noralea took a bad fall, underwent surgery in Johannesburg to repair a broken and dislocated shoulder,

After six years of working together in the Fairfax office, we had to get used to not seeing each other almost every day. Now it is difficult to think of not seeing her at all. Through the years she has been a great and loving support. Her strength, courage and honesty always impressed me. She was able to deal with her own medical issues and also give support to her husband as he dealt with his, and she still had time for others.

and left this life a week later as a result of complications from the operation. Our community remains stunned, at once reminded of the truth of impermanence, and the everlasting memory of Noralea’s signature twinkly smile, warmest hugs, and complete devotion to our yoga family. She was certified to teach through the Health Advantage Yoga Center, the Satchidananda Ashram, and most recently in April, 2009, at Duke University’s Integrative Medicine program for Therapeutic Yoga for Seniors. For many years, she taught the original Sun & Moon Adaptive Yoga class in our Fairfax studio, and recently added the fun and challenging Yoga on the Ball. Noralea was also instrumental in building and growing the Fairfax location of Sun & Moon, and served as business manager of both studios until 2010. Her husband, Darrell Dalkin, passed away in November 2014. Noralea is survived by her son David Dalkin of St. Petersburg, FL; daughter and son-in-law Christy and David Murrell of Centreville, VA, and a total of five adoring grandsons. ~ ANNIE MOYER, SUN & MOON YOGA STUDIO DIRECTOR

Noralea was my friend, mentor, and co-student in Carol’s Ayurveda class for a few sessions, which enabled me to get to know her and benefit from her wisdom. I am not sure she knew the impact she had on my life during that time. As team leader for a health & fitness program at my office, Noralea taught a “Yoga On the Ball” class for the health & fitness program I lead at my office. Everyone loved her and wanted her to teach again. She always greeted me with a hug and would give me these nuggets of wisdom which I cherish and remember today. ~ BONNIE AWOSIKA, WORK EXCHANGER

Rumi wrote, “I learned that every mortal will taste death. But only some will taste life.” Noralea tasted life – was full of life! There is such a love, spirit, joy, and happiness that Noralea shared. I will miss her hugs and kisses, Cava lunches, family, and yoga discussions. ~

I loved Noralea like she was my second mother, and she treated me like a son who couldn’t have too many mothers. Once I was buying a jacket that I really liked because it had interesting, ragged and strewn hem lines. Noralea suggested that I should get a jacket with properly trimmed and tidy hem lines, something only an attentive and doting mother would suggest, and something I truly appreciated even as I rejected the advice, like any rebellious son would. I feel this loss deeply and truly.

She warned us – people have told her she can be tough, and this Yoga on the Ball workshop was no exception. From starting small, sitting in tadasana with eyes closed, to incorporating joyful movement by bouncing and marching on the ball, to chaturanga pushups and dolphin pikes, there was no time when you couldn’t be fully present. I loved Noralea’s use of the word “fun.” Noralea was such a sweet teacher, and she was amazing in her ability to motivate and guide her students. If you had told me that she would be pass away following a shoulder injury within three weeks of that workshop, I would have said you were crazy. ~ DIANE PATTON,

We'd often been in class together and learned from each other. Just a few weeks ago Noralea was teaching her “ball” workshop…I didn’t make it to the workshop but thought I could still drop in on her class. My heart is heavy still from the knowing that I will never roll on the ball, sing in her class about auras, plan to meet for a movie and a meal, cover each other's yoga classes or chat about our lives and our loves. Always with a light that beamed from deep within, she held herself in the world like a dancer of love. Yesterday in the bathtub it hit me again – that I will never see her again – I started to speak to her out loud. In that moment I realized that I can still tell her how much I miss her and how she is loved. And she can hear me. ~ SUSIE CRATE, TEACHER

I met Noralea twelve years ago as a student and volunteer. She babysat my puppy for a month in 2010; shortly after that, I went with her to get her own new puppy. We pursued many shared interests, including basket-making, lifetime learning institute, gardening, and traveling. Such a wonderful friend. ~ SUSAN ALEXANDER, STUDENT

Even if you hadn’t seen her in over a year or maybe just met a few times, Noralea made you feel important and loved. Always tender, nurturing and warm. General Information & Fees Welcome to Sun & Moon Yoga We are a classic school of hatha yoga, with weekly classes structured to provide a well-rounded curriculum over an entire quarter. Regular practice and connection to your yoga community form the cornerstone of Sun & Moon’s unique yoga environment, which has shared the brilliance of yoga with many thousands of students since 1995. We keep our studios at a moderately comfortable room temperature, and provide careful instruction that favors safety and deep attention. We welcome beginners and new students at any time, and your first class is free. WE NOW OFFER THREE WAYS TO YOGA AT SUN & MOON FULL QUARTER REGISTRATION Our classic “yoga school” option, we recommend this for those seeking to learn and study on a consistent basis with a primary teacher. This option provides excellent yoga education with a continuity of instruction and practice. Depending on the season, the length of the quarter varies. Missed classes may be made up in any other class on the current schedule, before or after your absence. All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered and may not be carried forward. • $208 for 2018 spring quarter • The first three weeks are pro-ratable @$16/class; seniors age 60 and up take $10 off • After the third week, see below for flex passes • Add extra drop-ins anytime @$18/class

FLEX PASSES If you travel or your schedule is entirely unpredictable and it’s tough to commit to the entire quarter, or you like to mix up your experience and your teachers, we’re entirely flexible. These passes are good for six months for any class at any time. • $180 for ten • $120 for six • $22 for a single class drop-in

BLISS PASS For the yogis who want regular and frequent practice two or more times per week, and love coming to the many different class styles with our diverse teaching staff. Hassle-free enrollment – just sign up for monthly auto-renew to your credit card on our secure site, and show up whenever you like. • $135/month

YOGA ETIQUETTE AND WHAT TO WEAR Wear something comfy that’s not too loose and not too tight, and layer for temperature comfort. We practice barefoot and keep our floors clean; leave your shoes in the cubbies before entering the yoga rooms. Changing rooms are available. Avoid perfume/ cologne or noisy jewelry. If you’re late to class, enter quietly and wait for centering to conclude before setting up props. Inform the teacher in advance if you need to leave early, and do not leave during final relaxation. Take your valuables into the room with you or secure them in your car. Cell phones should be silent and out of sight. Sun & Moon provides mats and other yoga props free of charge, as well as cleaning supplies if necessary. Those who are concerned about the hygiene of props are encouraged to bring their own. Sun & Moon reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class or studio.

EMERGENCY CLOSINGS Classes cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergency will not be re-scheduled. Registered students may make up missed classes in any other class during the quarter. During severe weather conditions or other emergencies, we will post all cancellations on the studio website and on the outgoing voicemail at 703.525.9642 up to one hour before the start time of the next class.

REFUND AND CREDIT POLICIES AND TERMS Quarterly registered students: Please use discretion when requesting refunds or credits, as our teachers are compensated for your registration up front, and we offer a liberal make-up policy for missed classes. No refunds or credits are issued after the quarter has concluded; exceptions granted only for documented illness or injury. Refund and credit requests must be made via our online request form found at sunandmoonstudio.com/policiesand-fees. Refunds for classes will incur a $20 administrative fee. Refunds may be made by check (may take up to three weeks to process) or online to your credit card (may take up to one week to process). Studio credit will be applied to your online account, is valid for one year from the date issued and incurs no administrative fee. Studio credit applies to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash, merchandise, or a future refund. We do not issue refunds or studio credits for fewer than three classes. Flex Passes are good for six months from purchase; no refunds on Flex Passes; extensions granted only with management approval in cases of documented illness or injury. Bliss Passes issued via monthly auto-renew to the student’s credit card through our secure online payment processing system; student’s credit card information is never stored in any Sun & Moon database; Bliss Pass is not tied to actual attendance and no retroactive refunds will be made; non-transferrable; cancel anytime with no fee (allow one week before next billing cycle); expired credit card yields a $10 administrative fee; initiating a monthly bliss pass acknowledges a reduced class schedule during major holiday periods; no partial months.
