FALL 2019

Minnehaha Falls by Annie Moyer If you board Amtrak in Washington, D.C., and head for Whitefish, Montana (which we did), spend two days in positive reflection as you feel the gentle rails humming beneath you (highly recommended), and take a 24-hour layover in the Twin Cities (a lovely place to be in the summer), you might find yourself sitting on a rock at sunset, dipping your feet in Minnehaha Creek – a 22-mile tributary that runs over Minnehaha Falls into Minneapolis, where it joins the Mississippi River. Pausing before boarding the train for the final leg of our trip, we sat by the banks of this creek, watching the water rush along its clearly carved path lined by age-old rocks and stone. Wavelets looped back and crested before dropping back into the flow.
These waves coming off the falls suggest a metaphor for life. Some power far bigger than us convenes and gives us consciousness at the outset of our lives. It gathers steam as we gather autonomy, experience, and relationships. We travel as droplets among the waves along with every other fellow droplet formed during our lifetime. We move together through the decades, the delights, and the disasters. Sometimes there are detours, and sometimes certain droplets fall away sooner than it seems they should. If things feel pleasing, we sense a synchronicity with the wave. If not, we struggle against it or try to hide from it. Regardless, so much of our fear and suffering stems from an avoidance of the only ultimate guarantee: that one day this life force, this wave of ours, will rejoin the current and carry forward without us (Oh death, how do I refer to thee...let me count the ways). The yoga sages believed that our inability to mitigate suffering stems from a narrow perspective of how things really are – an attempt to isolate our droplet-selves not only from the singular wave but from the current underneath, as if walking up an escalator without noticing it’s actually going down, wondering why it's so hard to get to the top. If we fight those winless battles long enough, we never stop to truly see or fully appreciate the miraculous nature of the wave itself.
I don't suggest we have no power as individual droplets within the wave, especially one that seems to be moving toward a destructive formation. One of the mandates of an awake yogi-droplet is to recognize possibilities for productive action and skillful response to circumstance. If we align with intention, compassion, and equanimity, destructive courses can be corrected and obstacles can be removed. But regardless of its form, and with or without our full participation, the wave will no doubt move to completion.
In stark contrast to the narrator’s final sigh in The Great Gatsby, resigned that we simply “beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past,” sitting by Minnehaha Falls felt like a sweet reminder that I could let myself be carried forward by an underlying current that runs like rails, rocking me home.

Exhale, fold. That first exhale of the sun salute can be a joyful release of tension. We let the breath fully release, emptying the lungs and perhaps the mind, if even just until the next inhale.

We keep skeletons in the room as a teaching tool for asana, finding it helpful to convey what we want for our bodies in motion and stillness, and how to bring it to life through breath and awareness.

General Information & Fees Welcome to Sun & Moon Yoga We are a classic school of hatha yoga, with weekly classes structured to provide a well-rounded curriculum over an entire quarter. Regular practice and connection to your yoga community form the cornerstone of Sun & Moon’s unique yoga environment, which has shared the brilliance of yoga with many thousands of students since 1995. We keep our studios at a moderately comfortable room temperature, and provide careful instruction that favors safety and deep attention. We welcome beginners and new students at any time, and your first class is free. Three Ways to Yoga at Sun & Moon: 1. FULL QUARTER REGISTRATION Our classic “yoga school” option, we recommend this for those seeking to learn and study on a consistent basis with a primary teacher. This option provides excellent yoga education with a continuity of instruction and practice. Depending on the season, the length of the quarter varies. Make up any missed classes in any other class on the current schedule, before or after your absence. Take all make-ups during the quarter for which you are registered; make-ups may not be carried forward. • $240 for 15 classes through December 22 • After quarter begins, registrations may pro-rate all remaining weeks @$16/class • Seniors 60 and up take $10 off total registration • Register for two weekly classes and take $50 off • Discounts during the first three weeks only; one discount per person

2. FLEX PASSES If you travel or your schedule is entirely unpredictable and it’s tough to commit to the entire quarter, or you like to mix up your experience and your teachers, we’re entirely flexible. These passes are good for six months for any class at any time. • $180 for ten • $120 for six • $22 for a single class drop-in

3. BLISS PASS For the yogis who want regular and frequent practice two or more times per week, and love coming to the many different class styles with our diverse teaching staff. Hassle-free enrollment – just sign up for monthly auto-renew to your credit card on our secure site, and show up whenever you like. • $135/month

YOGA ETIQUETTE AND WHAT TO WEAR Wear something comfy that’s not too loose and not too tight, and layer for temperature comfort. We practice barefoot and keep our floors clean; leave your shoes in the cubbies before entering the yoga rooms. Changing rooms are available. Avoid perfume/ cologne or noisy jewelry. If you’re late to class, enter quietly and wait for centering to conclude before setting up props. Inform the teacher in advance if you need to leave early, and do not leave during final relaxation. Take your valuables into the room with you or secure them in your car. Cell phones should be silent and out of sight. Sun & Moon provides mats and other yoga props free of charge, as well as cleaning supplies if necessary. Those who are concerned about the hygiene of props are encouraged to bring their own. Sun & Moon reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class or studio.

EMERGENCY CLOSINGS Classes cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergency will not be re-scheduled. Registered students may make up missed classes in any other class during the quarter. During severe weather conditions or other emergencies, we will post all cancellations on the studio website and on the outgoing voicemail at 703.525.9642 up to one hour before the start time of the next class.

REFUND AND CREDIT POLICIES AND TERMS Quarterly registered students: Please use discretion when requesting refunds or credits, as our teachers are compensated for your registration up front, and we offer a liberal make-up policy for missed classes. No refunds or credits are issued after the quarter has concluded; exceptions granted only for documented illness or injury. Refund and credit requests must be made via our online request form found at sunandmoonstudio.com/policiesand-fees. Refunds for classes will incur a $20 administrative fee. Refunds may be made by check (may take up to three weeks to process) or online to your credit card (may take up to one week to process). Studio credit will be applied to your online account, is valid for one year from the date issued, and incurs no administrative fee. Studio credit applies to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash, merchandise, or a future refund. We do not issue refunds or studio credits for fewer than three classes. Flex Passes are good for six months from purchase; no refunds on Flex Passes; extensions granted only with management approval in cases of documented illness or injury. Bliss Passes are issued via monthly auto-renew to the student’s credit card through our secure online payment processing system; student’s credit card information is never stored in any Sun & Moon database; Bliss Pass is not tied to actual attendance and no retroactive refunds will be made; non-transferrable and nonshareable; cancel anytime with no fee (allow one week before next billing cycle); expired credit card yields a $10 administrative fee; initiating a monthly bliss pass acknowledges a reduced class schedule during major holiday periods; no partial months.
