FALL 2018

Hatha Yoga and Recombobulation by Annie Moyer A friend recently posted a photo from the Milwaukee Airport directing people to the “Recombobulation Area.” I presume it’s the part of the airport where you can sit down, catch your breath, and take care of basic needs before embarking on your journey, or meeting your loved one as they return from theirs. When I saw this, I had an entertaining thought – this could be the new name of our yoga studio, highlighting both the nature and the necessity of our work. I can’t recall a time when the world has felt more discombobulating. The national discourse is hot and angry. Natural resources are under siege and alarmingly diminishing. The international stage is a massive field of mistrust and rage. And, judging by conversations on the street and in the ether, it seems our hearts are tender and afraid. “They” (and we here at Sun & Moon) say that yoga can help. But how? Of the many ways to describe what we’re doing in yoga, “recombobulating” sounds so apt, but it requires more than simply wandering into a designated area. It requires intention, practice, commitment, and (more than a little) applied effort. In fact, this “applied effort” is the nuanced meaning of the Sanskrit word hatha, which designates all physical forms of yoga that use posture and breath to prepare the body for meditation. A popularized definition of hatha is that ha means sun and tha means moon, but it’s more interesting than that. The word as a whole means force, and more specifically, it’s the force created when opposing energies or actions such as active/ receptive, masculine/feminine, light/dark, heat/cold, inhale/exhale, or sun/moon are brought together firmly and in equal measure, to bring things into a balanced state of peace. It works best when we assess whatever’s discombobulated, set an intention to apply the right mix of effort and ease, carve out the time and space to do so, and get down to the work of “recombobulating.”

We teach hatha yoga. You’ll see in our new fall schedule that all classes previously named by their “Level” now include the word “Hatha,” the traditional term for breath-based, alignment-informed yoga practice from which all other styles emerged. The classes haven’t changed, just the names.

We can’t wait to see you on your mat this fall.

Take a Squat by Amir On my first trip to Bali, I found myself talking to two young men eating lunch by a magnificent waterfall. Beyond the scenery and the ongoing discussion, what really caught my attention was that both of these Balinese men were squatting with ease the whole time they were eating their lunch. I asked them how they could squat for so long with such grace and ease. They shrugged their shoulders like it was a stupid question, but I immediately knew the answer. They could squat with ease because squatting is built into their culture and they’ve been doing it their whole lives. About two thirds of the planet squats routinely – whether to rest, eat, pray, give birth, or evacuate their bowels. In the West, squatting evolved into something seen as undignified and uncomfortable, and sitting in chairs eventually became the norm. When the British created toilets, they made them to resemble a throne. What they gained in perceived dignity, they lost in intestinal prowess. Studies now show that greater hip flexion is correlated with less bowel strain – a big selling factor for the manufacturers of the Squatty Potty. The only reason it’s so difficult for our culture to squat is because we just don’t do it, and this is to our detriment. Prolonged sitting in chairs leads to higher stress on the back and lower spine. When we sit at a 90-degree angle in a chair, we shorten the psoas muscle, which pushes the lumbar spine out of alignment. It also reduces the production of synovial fluid in the joints, depriving cartilage of essential nutrition. Movement and compression are required to produce this oil. If our hips and knees never go past 90 degree flexion, joint degeneration sets in, and we wonder why we have chronic pain in the low back, hips, and knees. In asana practice, we learn how to squat correctly in malasana (garland pose). It opens the hips, stretches the hamstrings and ankles, and naturally elongates the spine. Malasana also helps strengthen the glutes, calf muscles and core muscles, toning the abdominals and aiding in digestion. If you think you are too far gone to start trying to squat, have faith – there are many accessible variations. You could choose to work with your back supported by a wall and your heels on a folded blanket. Or hold on to a counter as you come into a squat. Or sit on a block. Whatever variation gives you a reasonable amount of effort without causing pain is the perfect place to start. So should we toss our office chairs and squat all day? Well, no – any posture held for too long will cause issues. But standing desks, balance balls, and other alternative work stations are a great start, and those of us still stuck in a chair would benefit immensely from squatting several times a day. 3

REFUND AND CREDIT POLICIES AND TERMS Quarterly registered students: Please use discretion when requesting refunds or credits, as our teachers are compensated for your registration up front, and we offer a liberal make-up policy for missed classes. No refunds or credits are issued after the quarter has concluded; exceptions granted only for documented illness or injury. Refund and credit requests must be made via our online request form found at sunandmoonstudio.com/policiesand-fees. Refunds for classes will incur a $20 administrative fee. Refunds may be made by check (may take up to three weeks to process) or online to your credit card (may take up to one week to process). Studio credit will be applied to your online account, is valid for one year from the date issued and incurs no administrative fee. Studio credit applies to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash, merchandise, or a future refund. We do not issue refunds or studio credits for fewer than three classes. Flex Passes are good for six months from purchase; no refunds on Flex Passes; extensions granted only with management approval in cases of documented illness or injury. Bliss Passes issued via monthly auto-renew to the student’s credit card through our secure online payment processing system; student’s credit card information is never stored in any Sun & Moon database; Bliss Pass is not tied to actual attendance and no retroactive refunds will be made; non-transferrable and nonshareable; cancel anytime with no fee (allow one week before next billing cycle); expired credit card yields a $10 administrative fee; initiating a monthly bliss pass acknowledges a reduced class schedule during major holiday periods; no partial months.
