The Dominion’s new radio station
The Dominion now has its very own radio station: 105.9 MHz on the FM dial! The service is not new to the San Antonio area, but it’s the fifth area outlet for Radio Station KAHL. However, 105.9 is the first station to be officially licensed by the FCC to The Dominion. The proprietors of KAHL Radio are Dominion property owners and Club members, Darla and John Barger. Darla Barger’s connection with the development dates back to 1984, when she came abroad as the development’s real estate broker working with the late Gene Canavan, Rich Luders and Wayne Wright. John Barger came to town in 1975 as COO and co-founder of Clear Channel Communications (now: I-Heart Media), and became a Club member in 1986 when he married Darla. His history in broadcast dates back to 1958 when he was a DJ in College Station. After landing a gig producing NFL broadcasts for the Dallas Cowboys, Barger cofounded Clear Channel Communications, and subsequently served as the Chairman of the Texas Association of Broadcasters (TAB). Among his many achievements, John became the recipient of TAB’s Broadcaster of the Year award in 2012. Over the years, the Bargers have been investors and owners of 12 different San Antonio radio facilities including WOAI, KAJA, KONO, and currently KAHL. The Dominion 105.9 covers a population of over 400,000 listeners in Northwest Bexar County. It is simulcast with 103.7 which serves central San Antonio and with 1310-AM. KAHL (which is identified phonetically on air as “Call”) has an adult standards music format, which most people from The Dominion generation would simply refer to as “easy listening”. With fewer commercials than even a satellite stream, it offers a wide variety of music from legendary performers such as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett to Spanish favorites from Julio Iglesias and Gloria Estefan. Nashville and Southwestern appetites are also satisfied with ballads by George Strait, Willie Nelson, and Christopher Cross.
