Black Sea Cities from Sinop to Rize

Interview with South African Ambassador Exhibition - Mitt Moscow Exhibition - ITB Berlin Şaşırtıcı destinasyon Tayvan !

EDITOR’S NOTE

Don’t war, make love! This was the slogan of the youth in the 60s. Still suits for today. Can be used best for tourism. Biggest enemies of tourism today are guns, bombs, and wars. And politicians are the reason of them. Why on earth you land to Vietnam, Afganistan, Iraq, Libya and now in Syria... We curse the enemies of this humanity. Maybe first thing UNWTO should do is to deal with those countries that are enemies of humanity! The handshake of North and South Korea should teach a lesson to those countries. And we remember again our great leader Atatürk. We shout his words told the beginning of the 1900s, “Peace at home, Peace in the world!” In this issue, you will find more information about Turkey’s new tourism destination: Black Sea. The Black Sea region is a growing and popular tourist destination, especially for Arab travelers. Details from last month’s important travel exhibitions are in our pages. We present Taiwan that opens its doors to Turkish travelers is our destination story for our Turkish readers. We wish for peaceful days.

WORLD news 10 most expensive locations for business travel in the world The latest research published by ECA International revealed world's most expensive locations for business travel. Updated annually, ECA’s Daily Rates reports provide average costs for hotel accommodation, which makes up the bulk of any daily allowance, as well as meals, drinks, laundry, taxi transport and daily essentials. This information is used by companies to determine daily expense allowances for staff who undertake business travel. New York is the most expensive location in the world for business travel. This was one of the findings of the latest Daily Rates research published by ECA International, the world's leading provider of knowledge, information and software for the management and assignment of employees around the world. The full cost of a business trip to New York is USD 793 per day, on average. Second in the global rankings, and the most expensive European location for business travel, is Geneva where the average business trip would cost USD 720 per day. Another Swiss city; Zurich ranked third in the global rankings. “New York tops the rankings as the most expensive location for business travel due to the high cost of hotels and travel, as well as mandatory 15-20% tipping policies during meals out” said Simon Franklin, Daily Rates Manager at ECA International. “A high demand for hotels especially means rates can be charged at a premium and this is reflected in the average cost of a stay at a 4* hotel, which currently stands at a huge USD 509 per night.” Franklin said “Swiss cities have always been expensive locations for business travel, and 2017 was no different as the Swiss Franc has continued to perform very strongly. On top of this, Switzerland has long been considered a major financial and banking hub and will remain so for the foreseeable future, meaning that business travel to Swiss locations will keep on being a necessity.” Ten most expensive locations for business travel globally LOCATION

China ahead of USA is the biggest spender in the world The latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer finds out that virtually all source markets reported higher tourism spending in 2017 Both emerging and advanced economies fuelled growth, led by the United States which spent US$12 billion more on travel abroad. China spent US$8 billion more, consolidating its leadership as the biggest spender in the world. The Russian Federation spent US$7 billion more and Brazil US$5 billion more, both rebounding from weaker spending in previous years. China consolidated its leadership as the biggest spender in travel abroad in 2017 with US$258 billion in expenditure (+5% in local currency). 12  New Focus | May / June 2018

The other three BRIC economies all substantially increased expenditure in 2017. The Russian Federation (+13%) rebounded after a few years of declines, to reach US$31 billion, climbing three places to re-enter the top ten at number 8. Brazil (+20%) also recovered strongly and moved up eight places to number 16 with US$19 billion in expenditure. India continued its rise with 9% growth in spending to US$18 billion and moved up four places in the ranking to 17th. “Emerging economies play a key role in tourism development and we are very pleased to see the rebound of the Russian Federation and Brazil, and the ongoing rise of India, as these key emerging outbound markets contribute to growth and market diversification in many destinations”, said UNWTO SecretaryGeneral, Zurab Pololikashvili. Advanced economies also performed robustly in 2017, led by the United States (+9%), the world’s second largest outbound market. US travellers spent US$12 billion more on international tourism to US$135 billion. Expenditure from Germany (3rd largest market) and the United Kingdom (4th) both increased 3%, and from France (5th) 1%. Australia (6th) reported 7% growth and Canada (7th) a 9% increase. Completing the top ten are the Republic of Korea (9th) where expenditure grew by 9% and Italy (10th) where it increased by 6%. Beyond the top ten, tourism spending also grew notably in Sweden (+14%) and Spain (+12%). These strong results in outbound tourism are consistent with the 7% increase in international tourist arrivals in 2017. Demand for travel was particularly high in Europe, where arrivals increased 8% last year. UNWTO asks G20 leaders to include tourism in their agenda The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) joined the Ministers of Tourism of the G20 economies meeting in Buenos Aires in calling upon the G20 leaders to consider including tourism in their Agenda for its capacity to create more and better jobs. In his meeting with the President of Argentina, Mauricio Macri, and current G20 Chair, UNWTO SecretaryGeneral, Zurab Pololikashvili, stressed the capacity of tourism to create jobs and the need to advance the adaptation of the sector to the digital transformation. The 8th Meeting of the Tourism Ministers of the G20 economies was held in Buenos Aires on 17 April under Argentine’s Presidency of the G20 with a focus on the Future of Work - Tourism’s leading role in sustainable development: a driver for employment. In line with the priorities of Argentine’s G20 Presidency, which include the ‘Future of Work’, the meeting focused on how tourism can embrace innovation and technology, foster new skills development to create new decent jobs. “We need to promote the role that tourism has in shaping the future of our world as the sector that will create more jobs in the coming decade” said the Minister of Tourism of Argentina, Gustavo Santos, opening the Meeting. “Let us embrace the technological revolution and unleash its potential to create more and better jobs in our sector, making tourism a true pillar of the G20 objectives of inclusive and sustained growth” said UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili, in his opening remarks to the Meeting. 68% of travelers seek eco-friendly hotels 87% percent of global travelers state that they want to travel sustainably and nearly 4 in 10 (39%) confirming that they often or always manage to do so. These statistics and more below are according to the Sustainable Travel Report released by Booking.com. Although 39% of travelers confirm that they often or always manage to travel sustainably, 48% indicate they never, rarely or only sometimes manage to travel sustainably, suggesting that while promising strides are being made for a greener future, there is still plenty of room to turn intentions into action. ‘Sustainable travel’ is a subjective term that has different connotations for different people. However, for almost half of travelers (46%), ‘sustainable travel’ means staying in eco-friendly or green accommodations, topping the list of what people think of when hearing the term. The top reasons travelers give for choosing these eco-friendly places to rest their heads are to help reduce environmental impact (40%), to have a locally relevant experience (34%) and wanting to feel good about an accommodation choice (33%). Looking ahead, more than two-thirds (68%) of travelers intend to stay in an eco-accommodation in 2018, reassuringly up from 65% in 2017 and 62% in 2016. Additionally, the percentage of travelers who have not considered eco-friendly stays because they were unaware of their existence continues to decline, resting at 31% this year, compared to 39% and 38% in 2017 and 2016 respectively. When it comes to what inspires people to travel more sustainably, it seems that travel itself is the biggest motivator. Six in ten (60%) travelers indicated that they found the impressive natural sights visited on past travels as their inspiration to travel more sustainably, while more than half (54%) said seeing the visible impact that tourism can have on destinations serves as their inspiration. While perceived extra cost remains the top barrier for travelers wanting to travel more sustainably, two thirds (67%) of travelers would be willing to spend at least 5% more on their travel to ensure it was as low impact on the environment as possible.

ıntervıew Could you please tell us about yourself? How long have you been in Turkey as an ambassador? This is my third year in Turkey. I was born in Johannesburg and became active in student politics during the 1980s and later became a trade unionist. I received training from several educational institutes doing various business and management programmes including the Wharton School of Business, the University of Stellenbosch, Regenesys Business School, the Gordon Institute of Business and the University of Mumbai. I joined the Department of International Relations in November 2010 after serving as a parliamentarian since the first democratic elections held in 1994 which saw Nelson Mandela becoming the first democratically elected President of South Africa. I served abroad as Consul General in Mumbai before coming to Turkey in 2016 as Ambassador. As an ambassador, what are your duties for the tourism industry? My duties are to promote and create awareness of South Africa with the aim of strengthening relations between our peoples on a people to people basis. South Africa and Turkey are both very beautiful, very historical and cultural countries with long histories and civilisations. There is much for our South African Ambassador to the people to enjoy in both countries. Of course tourism is also a business, and Republic of Turkey, in this respect it is also my duty to promote tourism as a business. Turkey is one of the leading tourist countries in the world while South Africa’s tourism HE Pule Malefane industry is growing steadily. Unfortunately tourism is also largely influenced by global and national economics but we should not allow this to deter us. Indeed we have made it easy for our people to travel to our respective countries, since we do not need to apply for visas as tourists for a 30 day period. We are greatful to Turkish Airlines which connects directly Turkey and South Africa which makes our work to be effective. Can you tell us about your projects to increase the number of Turkish tourists traveling to South Africa in 2018? We are very pleased that South African Tourism has appointed a dedicated manager for Turkey in the form of Mr Sadiq Dindar. The Embassy will work very closely with South African Tourism to increase awareness of South Africa as both a tourism and business destination. Projects to be undertaken include continued participation in Turkey’s tourism fairs, ie EMITT and Travel Turkey, as well as a tourism roadshow, Turkish participation in South Africa’s largest tourism fair, INDABA and familiarisation trips so the Turkish trade can experience South Africa and thus offer better packages to the country. We also maintain very close relations with the travel media as well as general media in Turkey and publish travel news and articles regularly on the Embassy’s website and social media accounts. What do Turkish tourism professionals need to do to increase tourism with South Africa? Turkish professionals need to increase their knowledge and experience of South Africa to increase tourism between our two countries. There is no substitute for first-hand experience but this works both ways. The South African tourism trade also needs to come to Turkey in order for our countries and people to strengthen relations. Participation in South Africa’s tourism and business trade shows will go a long way to increasing the market for both tourist and business purposes. Our tourism offices need to do more to increase awareness of the offerings by the two countries and market the experiences in order to encourage more volumes and spend. Where have you been in Turkey as a holiday destination? Where / what do you like most and why? I travel extensively in Turkey for business purposes but vacation in Bodrum and Antalya. I particularly like the food, the hospitality and warmth of the Turkish people, the beauty of the country and its beaches. I have also done my bit in attending some of the sporting events such as the Ice Hockey championship and soccer matches mostly in Istanbul. What do you think about Turkish tourism and what should be done for improvement? Turkey needs to increase its marketing of the country in South Africa as well as offer incentives for South Africans to stay over in Istanbul when they are transiting the city. As is well known, Turkish Airlines flies daily to South Africa ie Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg with many South Africans transiting Istanbul to other destinations. This traffic and Istanbul as a hub transport city should be developed for the South African market. Turkey also host international events and conferences and should leverage on those by ensuring that they organise pre and post tours for delegates and participants. Do you like Turkish cuisine? Can you tell us your favorite meals, desserts, drinks etc. ? I very much enjoy Turkish cuisine. My favourites are desserts – Gaziantep Baklava with ice-cream. I also enjoy Adana kebabs, , Aran and Turkish wines.

cover story Sinop Sinop, historically Sinope, seaport on the southern coast of the Black Sea, northern Turkey. It lies on an isthmus linking the Boztepe Peninsula to the mainland and is shut off from the Anatolian Plateau to the south by high, forest-clad mountains. Because it has the only safe natural roadstead on the north coast of Asia Minor (Anatolia), Sinope was in antiquity the foremost port on the coast, with its land approaches barred by a huge citadel (now in ruins) and its sea side defended by a strong wall. Its decline was associated with its lack of easy access to the interior and its rivalry with İnebolu on the west and with Samsun on the east. The latter has emerged as the largest Turkish port on the Black Sea. Sinop’s extant monuments include a ruined ancient citadel rebuilt during the Byzantine and Seljuq periods, some isolated columns and inscribed stones built into the old walls and dating from the early Greek and Roman periods, and the Alâeddin Cami (a mosque), built in 1214. A 13th-century Alâiye religious school now houses the local museum. Sinop is linked by road with Samsun and by sea with Istanbul.

Turkey bestows upon you an abundance of opportunities to recline into its assorted terrains, panoramas, distinctive foliage and most prominently its cobaltskies, towering heritage architecture of some of the world’s most beautiful mosques and its azure ocean. Infused with rich heritage and cultures, Turkey offers some of the best opportunities on the fronts of cuisine, adventure, sights and of course souvenirs for you to take back home. Serving as the capital of the Sinop Province, Sinop can be described as a conservative Turkish mountain village. If you want to see Turkey minus all the commercialization, this is the place to visit. Situated on the north-most tip of Turkey, Sinop is a medieval charm. Towering from the hills, Sinop commands spectacular 28  New Focus | May / June 2018

Later on, in 1997 the prison was closed down and it is now used as a museum. Though reaching out to the waterfalls might turn out to be a difficult journey because of the bumpy road, still you cannot afford to miss it. The best part of this spot is its surrounding area where you get ample space to set up for camping. If camping doesn’t suit you, go for a family picnic. You are definitely going to enjoy your food within such a beautiful scenery and the sound of chirping birds to accompany you. Inceburun Lighthouse Settled at the tip of northernmost point of Anatolia, this active masonry lighthouse still manages to attract visitors coming to Sinop. And the primary reason of it is its construction. Though it was built in 1863. But you can still see the cracked basalts that was used to construct this lighthouse which amazes the visitors. The surrounding area near the lighthouse has also become quite popular for camping. Inside the lighthouse, the tower has a gallery around an octagonal shaped lantern room.

Today, only the central tower and the southern walls survive.

Giresun Island 1.6km off the coast of the main city is the Giresun island. According to a popular legend, the island was the abode of the female warrior clan called the Amazons. You can still see one of the temples this clan built on the island. Besides the temple, you can see ramparts and fortifications of the island from its heyday. Inside are two presses; they could be used for making wine or oil. There is a monastery on the island which is said to have been built in the 5th or 6th century AD. This island is covered with trees that have medicinal properties or are commercially valuable. This is said to be the only liveable island in the Black Sea.

Sis Mountain In the beginning of July, when the warm weather has settled upon Giresun, the snows begin to melt on the Sis Mountain (Sis Dagi ). In just a few days more, the entire mountain is covered with beautiful flowers. Even in the peak of summer, the Sis Dagi is covered with fog. It is during this season that the Sis Dagi Festival takes place here. Hundreds of people from Trabzon, Ordu and Giresun flock to the mountain for the festival. This also doubles up as a summer retreat and you will often see families picnicking in the valley. Outdoor enthusiasts can carry out treks on this mountain. It is a great place to spend a warm sunny day away from the heat and humidity of Giresun. Giresun Museum The Giresun Museum is a one-stop destination to learn about the history of this port city. The museum is housed in a Greek church building that was constructed in the 18th century. The building was used for other purposes till 1982 and it then remained vacant for some years. This museum was opened in 1988 to preserve the architectural heritage of the building. Exhibits in this museum are mainly from the Old Bronze Period, the Ottoman and Seljuk era and even the Roman trading days. You will be able to see the terracotta figurines, amphoras, and other finds from excavations in this museum. Haci Miktat Mosque Another mosque that makes a pretty sight is the Haci Miktat Camii. At first glance, you are likely to be reminded of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. This mosque is not quite so grand as the one in Turkey, but its beauty is somewhat like the latter. It was originally constructed in the 17th century by Haci Miktad Aga and renovated a couple of times in the 19th century. According to an inscription on the main gate, it was last renovated by Haci Ismail Efendi. The mosque is open for daily prayers.

Trabzon Trabzon, also called Trebizond, historically Trapezus, city, capital of Trabzon province, northeastern Turkey. It lies on a wide bay on the southeastern shore of the Black Sea backed by high ranges of the Pontic Mountains, which separate it from the central Anatolian Plateau. Modern Trabzon retains much of its medieval aspect. The heart of the city is on a triangle of tableland between two deep ravines, with remains of an ancient Roman-built harbour at its base. At its southern end stands a ruined citadel. The city centre is enclosed on the east and west by walls that date from Byzantine times. The commercial quarter is centred around a bazaar and park in the eastern part of the city near the old Genoese castle of Leontocastron; east of this lies the harbour. Trabzon is the terminus of the most practicable route over the mountains from Erzurum. For centuries it was on one of the leading trade routes between Europe and Central Asia, and it prospered particularly after the 13th century, when it served as the chief port for Tabriz and western Iran. Its significance declined, however, with the construction of the Ankara-Erzurum railway about 1900 and the development of the southern Iranian port of Khorramshahr. The city’s later revitalization has largely resulted from improvement in its port facilities and communications. Trabzon province is well forested and densely populated. The large variety of crops grown include tobacco, fruits, and hazelnuts. Small deposits of copper, lead, and iron are worked.

cover story Sights Trabzon has a number of tourist attractions, some of them dating back to the times of the ancient empires that once existed in the region. In the city itself, one can find a hub of shops, stalls and restaurants surrounding the Meydan, a square in the center of the city, which includes a tea garden. Within Trabzon Province, the main attractions are the Sümela Monasteryand the Uzungöl lake. Sumela Monastery The Greek Orthodox Monastery of the Virgin Mary, better known as Sumela Monastery, is one of the Black Sea's highlights. It has been shut for restoration though since 2015. Check the latest information in Trabzon; on our last visit locals were doubtful work would finish by the original 2018 reopening date. While shut, you can still get views of the monastery, clinging improbably to a sheer cliff, high above evergreen forests, by driving the road up to the car park. Uzungöl Uzungöl (Long Lake) is a lake situated to the south of the city of Trabzon, in the Çaykara district of Trabzon Province, Turkey. Uzungöl is also the name of the village on the lake's coast. Over the years, the picturesque lake, its village and the surrounding valley have become popular tourist attractions. The lake is at a distance of 99 km from Trabzon's city center, and 19 km from Çaykara's district center. The area is most famous for its natural environment. Located in a valley between high rising mountains, the lake and village at first appear inaccessible. The surrounding mountain forests and fog, occasionally enveloping the lake at night, also add to the scenery. The Hagia Sophia, a stunning Byzantine church, is probably the town's most important tourist attraction. Trabzon Castle ruins are visible in the town but cannot be visited as they fall in a military zone. The outside wall of the castle now serves as the back wall of a military building. The Atatürk Köşkü is a villa built in 1890 by a local Greek merchant. In 1924 Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stayed in the villa during his visit to Trabzon. He stayed there again in 1937. It houses period rooms and serves as a monument to the memory of the founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey. Boztepe Park is a small park and tea garden on the hills above Trabzon that has a panoramic view of nearly the entire city. The terrain in Trabzon is ascending in such a way that although the view is far above that of the buildings below, it is still close enough to be able to observe the flow of traffic and the people moving about in the city.

Rize Rize is the capital of the Rize province and is located in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. The best time to visit Rize is in summer from the months starting from April to August. This is the time when the weather is ideal to indulge in some interesting outdoor activities. Many festivals and events are organised throughout the year and visiting Rize during this period can be a good idea. Rize is famous all over the world for its tea. Moreover, it is also a major contributor to the tea industry in Turkey. There are many tea gardens in Rize and that just enhances the overall beauty of this city. When in Rize, soothing your eyes with mesmerising visuals and sipping some hot piping Turkish tea, together can be a good idea. The city lies on wooded hills stretching down to the sea, with its commercial section on the narrow strip of flat land around a small bay. Rize enjoys a mild climate and luxuriant vegetation.

It is linked by road with Trabzon, Hopa (88 km) east, near the Georgia frontier), and Erzurum (south) and by ship with Istanbul. Rize is a processing and sea shipping centre for the tea grown in the surrounding area; it has a tea research institute, founded in 1958. Sights Fırtına Deresi One of the popular attractions in Rize, is the breathtaking Firtina Deresi. A perfect place to visit with your family and friends, Firtina Deresi is high on locales as well as activities. You can indulge in activities such as river rafting and many clubs there will help you with that. The river flows beautifully and is a stunning sight to watch. You can also do some photography as the visuals here are just breathtaking. Moreover, there are many restaurants and cafes which offer the iconic Turkish tea. If you don’t want to do rafting, then you can just stay back and relax and watch other people raft. Tea House A tea house surrounded by a botanical garden, Ziraat - Botanik Cay Bahcesi is an ideal place to get the real taste of the ever so popular Turkish tea. This one is heavily visited by the tourists from across the globe who want to enjoy the panoramic views of the city. One warning: There are not many spots to sit in this garden and hence you should reach well before the time. You can also click some great pictures of the surroundings around. Moreover, if you want to take back some tea and coffee for yourself or for your friends, family and relatives, then there is a store which sells the same, outside the garden. Palovit Waterfall Another natural attraction in Rize, Palovit Waterfall is one of the most stunning places in the city. This 15 metre waterfall is sure to please your eyes and turn your trip to Rize an unforgettable experience. You can watch the shimmering sight of the waterfall and capture it in your lens. The place gets all slippery and muddy during rains and hence try visiting this incredible attraction in summer.

MGallery otel koleksiyonunun Türkiye'deki ilk örneği olan "The Galata İstanbul Hotel MGallery by Sofitel" Karaköy'de 180 yıllık tarihi binada açıldı.
