F TURKEY NEWS Turkey Commemorates 100th Anniversary of Çanakkale Victory

Turkey commemorates the 100th anniversary of victory of the naval battle at Çanakkale, which was won when Ottoman artillery held off an invading force of Allied States in 1915. Heroism displayed by Turkish troops in defending their homeland stopped the advance, and the Battles ended in clear victory for the Ottoman State. The Battle of Çanakkale, which is also known as the Battle of Gallipoli, the Dardanelles Campaign or the Gallipoli Campaign, was fought on land and sea around the Gallipoli peninsula (Gelibolu in Turkish) on the northern shore of the Dardanelles strait during World War I between March 18, 1915 and January 9, 1916. March 18 is also known as Martyrs’ Day, in which the martyrs of the battle are commemorated every year across Turkey. The Turkish nation went through an epic struggle during the battle, as people of various ethnicities fought together to win the war. The British and French were trying to take control of İstanbul and the Turkish straits in order to secure access to Russia. Russia’s allies Britain and France launched a naval attack followed by an amphibious landing on the peninsula with the eventual aim of capturing the Ottoman capital. However, the Allied forces were unsuccessful in their efforts. The campaign ended after eight months of fighting, with heavy casualties on both sides, leaving veterans with many stories to tell their descendants. Atatürk rose as an important leader in the legendary 57th infantry regiment of the Ottoman army, which was fighting

the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) of the Allied forces. In a speech in April 1915, Atatürk reportedly told his soldiers in the 57th regiment: “I do not order you to fight, I order you to die. In the time which passes until we die, other troops and commanders can come forward and take our places.” Almost no soldiers from the 57th regiment survived the war. Atatürk himself was hit by a piece of shrapnel but was saved by the pocket watch he kept in his breast pocket. Today, the site where he was hit is marked by his statue, and the area where the battle was fought is a pilgrimage destination for many Turks. Almost every day of the year, the memorial for the martyrs of the war receives thousands of visitors who come to pray for their deceased ancestors. The 100th anniversary of Çanakkale Naval Battles celebrated across the country with ceremonies, and martyrs were commemorated with gratitude. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and several ministers attended the ceremonies in Çanakkale. A gold medal, bearing the inscription ‘Çanakkale is Impassable’, attached to a Turkish flag, which symbolizes 235 thousand lives who died saving the country. Ceremonies continuedat the Martyrs’ Memorial located in the Gallipoli Peninsula. The cemetery visited after a parade of battleships and a show of fighter jets.

Turkish Government Promotes Hotel Construction

Tourism is getting an even more important sector in Turkey. According to TOPHOTELPROJECTS, the worldwide leading provider of global b2b hotel data, 53 new top hotels with a total of 9,400 rooms are in the pipeline. The investments are supported by the government through the allocation of public land for private hotel projects. The Directorate-General of investments and businesses in the Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced a list of 44 plots at 22 locations in the mid of 2014. At these locations, new different tourism facilities (hotels, motels and holiday villages) are planned with a total capacity of 11,316 beds. The list also includes suggestions for recreational complexes, which could be used for day trips. One focus of the planned investments is hotels with attached spas that also offer treatments. In Yalova on the Marmara Sea, south of Istanbul, a spa hotel with 750 guest beds is arising. The investment will amount 77 million Turkish lira. In Bursa, about 200 kilometers southeast of Istanbul, the construction of two golf courses and spa hotels is provided, each with 420 beds. The total investment is estimated at more than 500 million euros. Regardless of the state support, the interest in hotel projects remains high. Mid-2014 the head of the conglomerate Altinbas Holding, Vakkas Altinbas, announced that his company wants to invest at least US$100 million dollars in a luxury hotel in northern Cyprus. The property will be close to Girne (Kyrenia). A final site selection has not yet been taken. Also the CVK Holding intends to invest in luxury hotels. By 2023, the group plans to open nine hotels. Primarily two new hotels will arise in Istanbul/Tophane and in the Aegean vacation destination of Bodrum. The construction company Kavanlar Insaat built the Hampton by Hilton hotel in Kocaeli. It will open its doors in May 2015. The hotel will feature more than 207 rooms, four conference rooms and a fitness center. The hotel is part of a large building complex with a shopping center “Symbol Kocaeli” as well as the hospital “Medical Park”. The cost of the entire complex, on an area of 188,420 square meters, amount to US$250 million. The hotel investment’s focus is clearly on Istanbul: In the European Asian metropolis on the Bosporus 22 new top hotels with 4,700 rooms will arise. Four hotel projects will open under a Hilton brand. But also Sheraton (Starwood Hotels), Novotel (Accor), Mandarin Oriental, Fairmont and the German Steigenberger Hotel Group is investing in Istanbul.

On November 1920, the French were defeated and the French Government officially accepted TBMM (Turkish Grand National Assembly) Government. On 20th October, 1921 the “Ankara Agreement” was signed with the French. According to this agreement, the French left Çukurova completely on 5th January, 1992. The city center has been moved to Adana since that date again.

Adana has been founded on the side of Seyhan River which comes out from Taurus Mountains and disembogues to Mediterranean by performing meanders on the plain. According to the archeological and ethnographical research studies, this region has thousands years of history. On a Hittite tablet written in around 1650 BC, the Adana region (Çukurova) is referred as Uru Adania – town of Adana. Adana is a place with a very long, colorful and interesting history and where history lives hand in hand with nature. Adana is in the Mediterranean Region of Turkey and its neighbors are Kayseri in the north, Osmaniye and Kahramanmaraş in the east, Niğde and Mersin in the west and Hatay in the southeast. Adana has two different geographical structures; the lowlands and the mountainous area. Adana’s northwest, north and northeast regions are surrounded by the Middle Taurus Mountains. These mountains are the Bolkar, the Aladağlar, the Tahtalı Mountains and Binboğa Mountains. The Çukurova Region, also known as the Adana Lowland, is the largest delta lowland of Turkey. It was formed by the alluviums carried by the Seyhan, Ceyhan Rivers and the Berdan (Tarsus) Streamlet. The climate of the region, which

is under the influence of the Mediterranean climate, differs in the mountainous areas. Generally, the summer is hot and dry and the winter is warm and rainy. The Çukurova Region is very rich in terms of wildlife because the climate, the flora and the natural life is suitable. So hunting tourism is important in this area.It has been the hunting grounds of many kings, sultans and lords for thousands of years. The francolin bird, which is unique to Çukurova and has many songs called after it is one the most important animals of this region and is under protection. That figure is set to rise to over $180 billion by 2018 with growth expected to continue at a rate of 4.79 per cent annually until 2020, compared with just 3.8% overall tourism growth.

Venedik gezimizin son günü, grubumuz bizim kaldığımız otele Villa Ines’e tanıtıma’a geldiler. Ev sahibimiz Marika Hanım herkesi tek tek kapıda karşılayarak odaları gezdirdi. F Inreview Interview with Mr. Wahyu A. Bayuaji Executive Assistant Manager/Act. General Manager

1- Could you pls. introduce us your backround in Tourism and Hotel industry I graduated from the National Hotel & Tourism Institute in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia majoring in Tourism and Hotel Management in 2002. I had the first six-month internship program within Rooms Division at Albert Court Hotel Singapore, managed by Far East Organization, the largest private property developer in Singapore in 1999. And secondly I managed to get another six-month internship program within Food & Beverage Division at Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, managed by HPL Hotels & Resorts in 2001. After completing my bachelor degree, I started to develop my career in the hotel industry and looking for getting more international work experience outside my country. By that time, Golden Tulip Hotels and Resorts was opening a management trainee program, this was my chance and fortunately I got selected to take part of this valuable opportunity at Tulip Inn Beekbergen, The Netherlands. During the 12-month program, I took a few roles in the hotel operations, familiarizing myself with the business in general and with the company itself. As part of the Louvre Hotels Group, this worldwide hotel chain operates three well-known hotel brands: Tulip Inn, Golden Tulip and Royal Tulip with a total of over 240 hotels in 45 countries. Each establishment combines the hotel chain’s commitment to high international standards and the local flavor. I went back to Indonesia one year later as I got an offer from Bali Gardenia Resort (previously Clarion Suites managed by Best Western International) in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia as Sales Manager. One year later I stepped up my career to an exciting work opportunities within Club Bali Hotels & Resorts, an international hotel management and developer company in Indonesia. I started managing the sales and operations at Club Bali Suites @ Jayakarta Bali Hotel as Front Office Manager and getting soon promoted for the Corporate Sales Manager position for all of its properties in Indonesia. After a six year of my tenure at Club Bali Hotels & Resorts, I continued to take some new challenges and more responsibilities in one of Asia’s leading boutique hideaway and luxury resort developers, Karma Royal Group (KRG). Its extensive experience in resort development and operation ensures a smooth, simple and profitable way to purchase exclusive property in some of the world’s hottest holiday destinations. Its portfolio of owned and managed hideaways extends from Bali and Lombok in Indonesia to Koh Samui in Thailand, Margaret River in Australia, Mykonos in Greece, Bahamas in Carribean and lately Isles of Scilly in England. A number of its properties are members of the prestigious group, The Leading Hotels of The World (LHW). I was appointed as the Group Assistant Director of Sales & Marketing, mainly responsible to drive the business of Karma Resorts’ properties throughout Indonesia including Karma Jimbaran, Bali; Karma Kandara, Bali and Karma Reef, Lombok as well as representing the global portfolio. Four years later or just at the beginning of this year I re-discover my inner passion as a hotelier, I took an exciting opportunity offered by Club Bali Hotels & Resorts to manage the whole hotel operations of its finest property in Bali, Club Bali Suites @ Legian Beach, and lead the team to the next level! 2- What is your thoughts about the future of hotel industry in Bali, Asia and in the world. Also new trends in hospitality sector, economical crisis in Europe and affects in Asia & Bali. Strong domestic market growth since 2008 continues to make Bali as one of the leading tourism destinations in ASEAN. With approximately 13% average annual growth rate in arrivals, the prospect for Bali’s tourism and hotel industries are more positive than ever. The new airport expansion promises to support Bali’s ability to bring in more tourists. With more than 8% growth in international arrivals and 22% in domestic travelers, Bali is showing resilience to uncertainties in Europe and the US. Australia remains one of the largest contributors to foreign arrivals, while Japanese visitors continued to decline. The average annual growth for Australian arrivals was the highest at 40%, followed by Chinese with 29%, while Japanese arrivals declined by an average of 15% per year.

42

NewFocus

May / June’2015

Australian arrivals are dominating the Bali market mainly due to the following reasons: (1) relatively close distance, (2) strengthened Australian dollar, (3) increased airline promotions for Bali (often cheaper than domestic flights/holidays in Australia), and (4) the rise in low cost carriers flying between the two countries. There could be a hit to allimportant government MICE business in 2015 with a ban on government bodies booking hotel MICE business in 2015 for groups of less than 100 participants, but the good news is that the airport tax will be included in air ticket in 2015, and from January 1, 2015, visa free entrance has been authorized for residents of Australia, China, Japan, South Korea and Russia. 3- Could you pls. tell us Club Bali, why guests prefer your hotel, your important markets...etc. Club Bali Suites @ Jayakarta Bali Hotel or more popular known simply as Club Bali Suites Legian is an all-suites hotel with all the comfort of home with all the benefits of a beach resort which has been recognized as one of Bali’s best family accommodations offering a wonderful base from which to explore Bali. We are seeing a positive growth of bookings via internet for our hotel year on year, the fact is nowadays online booking channels taking more share than the traditional distribution channels, however we are led to believe there are many customers that still prefer to book through the traditional distribution channels for some reasons. Please let me know if I can be any of your further assistance. Many thanks and best regards,

Renault: 61B Beyazıt-Taksim hattında 09.30 Beyazıt’tan hareketle, Beyazıt-Laleli-Unkapanı-Şişhane-Taksim güzergâhında, Bussing: 87 Topkapı-Edirnekapı-Taksim hattında 09.05 Topkapı Suriçi’nden hareketle, Edirnekapı-Fatih-UnkapanıŞişhane-Taksim güzergâhında, Leyland: 35 Kocamustafapaşa-Eminönü hattında 09.30 Kocamustafapaşa’dan hareketle, Cerrahpaşa-YusufpaşaUnkapanı-Eminönü güzergâhında hizmet verecek.

Bu arada Fenerbahçe Ülker’in Final Four’a kalması, organizasyonun yapılacağı 15-17 Mayıs tarihlerdeki İstanbulMadrid uçak biletlerine zam getirdi. NewFocus
